1. 1

   וַיְהִיAndכִּרְאוֹתוֹseeingאֶת־הֲמוֹןthe multitude ofהָעָםthe people,וַיַּעַלhe went upהָהָרָהinto a mountain:וַיֵּשֶׁבand when he was set,שָׁםthere,וַיִּגְּשׁוּcameאֵלָיוunto him:תַּלְמִידָיו׃his disciples

   And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

   וַיִּפְתַּחAnd he openedאֶת־פִּיוhis mouth,וַיּוֹרֵםand taught them,וַיֹּאמַר׃saying,

   And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

   אַשְׁרֵיBlessed areעֲנִיֵּיthe poor inהָרוּחַspirit:כִּיforלָהֶםtheirs isמַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהַשָׁמָיִם׃heaven.

   Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

   אַשְׁרֵיBlessed areהָאֲבֵלִיםthey that mourn:כִּי־הֵםfor theyיְנֻחָמוּ׃shall be comforted.

   Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5. 5

   אַשְׁרֵיBlessed areהָעֲנָוִיםthe meek:כִּי־הֵמָּהfor theyיִירְשׁוּshall inheritאָרֶץ׃the earth.

   Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6. 6

   אַשְׁרֵיBlessed areהָרְעֵבִיםthey which do hungerוְהַצְּמֵאִיםand thirstלַצְּדָקָהafter righteousness:כִּי־הֵםfor theyיִשְׂבָּעוּ׃shall be filled.

   Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

7. 7

   אַשְׁרֵיBlessed areהָרַחֲמָנִיםthe merciful:כִּי־הֵםfor theyיְרֻחָמוּ׃shall obtain mercy.

   Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8. 8

   אַשְׁרֵיBlessed areבָּרֵיthe pure inלֵבָבheart:כִּי־הֵםfor theyיֶחֱזוּshall seeאֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

   Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

9. 9

   אַשְׁרֵיBlessed areרֹדְפֵיthe makers ofשָׁלוֹםpeace:כִּיforבְנֵיthe children ofאֱלֹהִיםGodיִקָּרֵאshall they be calledלָהֶם׃unto them.

   Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

10. 10

    אַשְׁרֵיBlessed areהַנִּרְדָּפִיםthey which are persecutedבִּגְלַלforהַצְּדָקָהrighteousness' sake:כִּיforלָהֶםtheirs isמַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהַשָׁמָיִם׃heaven.

    Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11. 11

    אַשְׁרֵיכֶםBlessed are you,כִּי־יְחָרֲפוּwhen men shall revileוְרָדְפוּyou, and persecuteאֶתְכֶםyou,וְדִבְּרוּand shall sayעֲלֵיכֶםagainst youבְּשֶׁקֶרfalsely,כׇּל־רָעall manner of evilבַּעֲבוּרִי׃for my sake.

    Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12. 12

    שִׂמְחוּRejoice,וְגִילוּand be exceeding glad:כִּיforשְׂכַרְכֶםis your rewardרַבgreatבַּשָׁמָיִםin heaven:כִּי־כֵןfor soרָדְפוּpersecuted theyאֶת־הַנְּבִיאִיםthe prophetsאֲשֶׁרwhichהָיוּwereלִפְנֵיכֶם׃before you.

    Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

13. 13

    אַתֶּםYou areמֶלַחthe saltהָאָרֶץof the earth:וְאִם־הַמֶּלַחbut if the saltהָיָהhas becomeתָפֵלtastelessבַּמֶּהwherewithיָמְלָחshall it be salted?הֵןbeholdלֹא־יִצְלַחit is not fitעוֹדany moreלַכֹּלfor anythingכִּיbutאִם־לְהַשְׁלִיךְto be castחוּצָהout,וְהָיָהand to beמִרְמָסtrodden under footלִבְנֵיofאָדָם׃men.

    Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

14. 14

    אַתֶּםYou areאוֹרthe light ofהָעוֹלָםthe world.עִירA cityיֹשֶׁבֶתthat is setעַל־הָהָרon an hillלֹאcannotתִסָּתֵר׃be hid.

    Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15. 15

    גַּםNeitherאֵיןdo men notמַדְלִיקִיםlightנֵרa candle,לָשׂוּםand putאוֹתוֹitתַּחַתunderהָאֵיפָהa bushel,כִּיbutאִם־עַל־הַמְּנוֹרָהon a candlestick;לְהָאִירand it giveth lightלְכׇל־אֲשֶׁרunto all that areבַּבָּיִת׃in the house.

    Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16. 16

    כֵּןLet soיָאֵרshineאוֹרְכֶםyour lightלִפְנֵיbeforeבְּנֵיthe sons ofהָאָדָםmen,לְמַעַןthatיִרְאוּthey may seeמַעֲשֵׂיכֶםyour works,הַטּוֹבִיםgoodוְשִׁבְּחוּand glorifyאֶת־אֲבִיכֶםyour Fatherשֶׁבַּשָׁמָיִם׃which is in heaven.

    Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

17. 17

    אַל־תְּדַמּוּThink notכִּיthatבָאתִיI am comeלְהָפֵרto destroyאֶת־הַתּוֹרָהthe law,אוֹorאֶת־דִּבְרֵיthe words ofהַנְּבִיאִיםthe prophets:לֹאnotבָאתִיI am comeלְהָפֵרto destroy,כִּיbutאִםratherלְמַלֹּאת׃to fulfil.

    Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

18. 18

    כִּיForאָמֵןverilyאֹמֵרsayאֲנִיIלָכֶםunto you,עַדTillכִּי־יַעַבְרוּpass,הַשָּׁמַיִםheavenוְהָאָרֶץand earthלֹאin no wise shallתַּעֲבֹרpassיוֹדjotאַחַתoneאוֹ־קוֹץor tittleאֶחָדoneמִן־הַתּוֹרָהfrom the law,עַדtillאֲשֶׁרthatיְקֻיַּםshall be fulfilledהַכֹּל׃all.

    For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

19. 19

    לָכֵןthereforeהָאִישׁThe manאֲשֶׁרwhoיָפֵרshall breakאַחַתoneמִן־הַמִּצְוֹתof commandments,הַקְּטַנּוֹתleastהָאֵלֶּהtheseוִילַמֵּדand shall teachאֶת־בְּנֵיthe sons ofהָאָדָםmenלַעֲשׂוֹתto doכָּמוֹהוּso,קָטוֹןthe leastיִקָּרֵאhe shall be calledלוֹof him,בְּמַלְכוּתin the kingdom ofהַשָׁמָיִםheaven:וַאֲשֶׁרbut whosoeverיַעָשֶׂהshall doוִילַמֵּדand teachאוֹתָןthem,לָזֶהthe sameגָּדוֹלgreatיִקָּרֵאshall be calledבְּמַלְכוּתin the kingdom ofהַשָׁמָיִם׃heaven.

    Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20. 20

    כִּיForאֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,אִם־לֹאThat exceptתִהְיֶהshall beצִדְקַתְכֶםyour righteousnessמְרֻבָּהmore abundantמִצִּדְקַתthe righteousness ofהַסּוֹפְרִיםthe scribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees,לֹאin no caseתָבֹאוּyou shall enter intoבְּמַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהַשָׁמָיִם׃heaven.

    For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21. 21

    הֲלֹאHave you notשְׁמַעְתֶּםheardכִּיthatנֶאֱמַרit was saidלָרִאשֹׁנִיםby them of old time,לֹאnotתִרְצָחYou shall kill;וַאֲשֶׁרand whosoeverיִרְצַחshall killחַיָּבshall be in dangerהוּאhe is,לְבֵיתofדִּין׃the judgment:

    Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

22. 22

    וַאֲנִיBut Iאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרThat whosoeverיִקְצֹףis angryעַל־אָחִיוwith his brotherחִנָּםwithout a causeחַיָּבshall be in dangerהוּאhe is,לְבֵיתofדִּיןthe judgment:וַאֲשֶׁרand whosoeverיֹאמַרshall sayאֶל־אָחִיוto his brother,רֵקָאRaca,חַיָּבshall be in dangerהוּאhe is,לְסַנְהֶדְרִיןof the council:וַאֲשֶׁרbut whosoeverנָבָלYou fool,יִקְרָאshall say,לוֹto him,הוּאshall beמְחֻיַּבin danger ofאֵשׁthe fire ofגֵּיהִנֹּם׃hell.

    But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

23. 23

    לָכֵןThereforeאִם־תַּקְרִיבif you bringקָרְבָּנְךָyour giftאֶל־הַמִּזְבֵּחַto the altar,וְזָכַרְתָּand there rememberestכִּי־יֵשׁthatלְאָחִיךָyour brotherדְּבַרhath oughtרִיבof contentionעִמָּךְ׃against you;

    Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

24. 24

    הַנַּחLeaveשָׁםthereאֶת־קָרְבָּנֶךָyour giftלִפְנֵיbeforeהַמִּזְבֵּחַthe altar,וְלֵךְand go your way;כַּפֵּרfirst be reconciledאֶת־פְּנֵיtoאָחִיךָyour brother,וְאַחֲרֵיand afterכֵןthat,בּוֹאcomeהַקְרֵבand offerאֶת־קָרְבָּנֶךָ׃your gift.

    Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

25. 25

    מַהֵרquickly,הִתְרַצֵּהAgreeלְאִישׁwith yoursרִיבְךָadversaryבְּעוֹדְךָwhiles you areבַדֶּרֶךְin the wayאִתּוֹwith him;פֶּן־יַסְגִּירְךָlest at any time deliver youאִישׁthe man,רִיבְךָthe adversaryאֶל־הַשֹׁפֵטto the judge,וְהַשֹׁפֵטand the judgeיַסְגִּירְךָdeliver youלַשׁוֹטֵרto the officer,וְהָשְׁלַכְתָּand you be castאֶל־בֵּיתintoהַכֶּלֶא׃prison.

    Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

26. 26

    אָמֵןVerilyאֹמֵרsayאֲנִיIלָךְunto you,לֹאby no meansתֵצֵאYou shall come outמִשָּׁםthence,עַדtillאִם־שִׁלַּמְתָּyou have paidאֶת־הַפְּרוּטָהthe farthingהָאַחֲרוֹנָה׃uttermost.

    Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

27. 27

    שְׁמַעְתֶּםYou have heardכִּיthatנֶאֱמַרit was saidלָרִאשֹׁנִיםby them of old time,לֹאnotתִנְאָף׃You shall commit adultery:

    Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

28. 28

    וַאֲנִיBut Iאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,כׇּל־הַמִּסְתַּכֵּלThat whosoever lookethבְּאִשָׁהon a womanלַחְמֹדto lustאוֹתָהּafter herנָאֹףhathנְאָפָהּcommitted adultery with her alreadyבְּלִבּוֹ׃in his heart.

    But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

29. 29

    וְאִםAnd ifתַּכְשִׁילְךָoffend you,עֵיןeyeיְמִינְךָyour rightנַקֵּרpluckאוֹתָהּitוְהַשְׁלֵךְout, and cast itמִמְּךָfrom you:כִּיforטוֹבit is profitableלְךָfor youאֲשֶׁרthatיֹאבַדshould perish,אֶחָדoneמֵאֵבָרֶיךָof your membersמֵרֶדֶתand not that should be castכׇּל־גּוּפְךָyour whole bodyאֶל־גֵּיהִנֹּם׃into hell.

    And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

30. 30

    וְאִם־יָדְךָAnd if your handהַיְמָנִיתrightתַּכְשִׁילְךָoffend you,קַצֵּץcutאוֹתָהּitוְהַשְׁלֵךְoff, and cast itמִמְּךָfrom you:כִּיforטוֹבit is profitableלְךָfor youאֲשֶׁרthatיֹאבַדshould perish,אֶחָדoneמֵאֵבָרֶיךָof your membersמֵרֶדֶתand not that should be castכׇּל־גּוּפְךָyour whole bodyאֶל־גֵּיהִנֹּם׃into hell.

    And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

31. 31

    וְנֶאֱמַרIt hath been said,אִישׁa manכִּיwhoיְשַׁלַּחshall put awayאֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹhis wife,וְנָתַןlet him giveלָהּherסֵפֶרa writingכְּרִיתוּת׃of divorcement:

    It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

32. 32

    וַאֲנִיBut Iאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,הַמְשַׁלֵּחַThat whosoever shall put awayאֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹhis wife,בִּלְתִּיsavingעַל־דְּבַרfor the cause ofזְנוּתfornication,מְבִיאָהּcauseth herלִידֵיto commitנִאֻפִיםadultery:וְהַלֹּקֵחַand whosoever shall marryאֶת־הַגְּרוּשָׁהher that is divorcedלוֹto himלְאִשָּׁהto wifeנֹאֵףcommitteth adultery,הוּא׃he.

    But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

33. 33

    עוֹדAgain,שְׁמַעְתֶּםyou have heardכִּיthatנֶאֱמַרit hath been saidלָרִאשֹׁנִיםby them of old time,לֹאnotתִּשָׁבַעYou shall forswearלַשָּׁקֶרthyself,וְשַׁלֵּםbut shalt performלָאָדוֹןunto the Lordשְׁבֻעוֹתֶיךָ׃your oaths:

    Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

34. 34

    וַאֲנִיBut Iאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,לֹאnotתִּשָׁבְעוּSwearכׇּל־שְׁבוּעָהat all;לֹאneitherבַּשָּׁמַיִםby heaven;כִּי־כִסֵּאfor it is the throne ofאֱלֹהִיםGodהֵמָּה׃it is.

    But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:

35. 35

    וְלֹאNorבָאָרֶץby the earth;כִּי־הֲדוֹםfor it is the footstool ofרַגְלָיוhis feet:הִיאit is.וְלֹאneitherבִירוּשָׁלַיִםby Jerusalem;כִּי־הִיאfor it isקִרְיַתthe city ofמֶלֶךְtheרָב׃great King.

    Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

36. 36

    אַףNeitherבְּחַיֵּיbyרֹאשְׁךָyour head,אַל־תִּשָׁבֵעַshall you swearכִּי־לֹאbecause notתוּכַלyou canלַהֲפֹךְmakeשַׂעֲרָהhairאַחַתoneלִלְבָנָהwhiteאוֹorלִשְׁחֹרָה׃black.

    Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37. 37

    אַךְ־יְהִיBut let be,דְבַרְכֶםyour communicationהֵןYea,הֵןyea;לֹאNay,לֹאnay:וְהַיּוֹתֵרfor whatsoever is moreעַלthanאֵלֶּהtheseמִן־הָרָעcometh of evil.הוּא׃it is.

    But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

38. 38

    שְׁמַעְתֶּםYou have heardכִּיthatנֶאֱמַרit hath been said,עַיִןAn eyeתַּחַתforעַיִןan eye,שֵׁןand a toothתַּחַתforשֵׁן׃a tooth:

    Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

39. 39

    וַאֲנִיBut Iאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,אַל־תִּתְקוֹמֲמוּThat you resist notלָרָשָׁעevil:וְהַמַּכֶּהbut whosoever shall smiteאוֹתְךָyouעַל־הַלְּחִיon cheek,הַיְמָנִיתyour rightהַטֵּה־לוֹturn to himגַּםalsoאֶת־הָאַחֶרֶת׃the other.

    But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

40. 40

    וַאֲשֶׁרAnd if any manיַחְפֹּץwillלָרִיבsue you at the lawעִמְּךָwith you,וְלָקַחַתand take awayאֶת־כֻּתָּנְתֶּךָyour coat,תֵּן־לוֹlet him haveגַּםalso.אֶת־הַמְּעִיל׃your cloke

    And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

41. 41

    וְהָאֹנֵסAnd whosoever shall compelאוֹתְךָyouלָלֶכֶתto goעִמּוֹwith himדֶּרֶךְa way ofמִילa mile,לֵךְgoאִתּוֹwith himשְׁנָיִם׃twain.

    And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

42. 42

    הַשׁאֵלHe that askethמֵאִתְּךָof you,תֵּן־לוֹgive to him,וְהַבָּאand from him that wouldלִלְוֹתborrowמִמְּךָof youאַל־תָּשֵׁבturn not youפָּנָיו׃away.

    Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

43. 43

    שְׁמַעְתֶּםYou have heardכִּיthatנֶאֱמַרit hath been said,וְאָהַבְתָּYou shall loveלְרֵעֲךָyour neighbor,וְשָׂנֵאתָand hateאֶת־אֹיְבֶךָ׃your enemy.

    Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44. 44

    וַאֲנִיBut Iאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,אֶהֱבוּLoveאֶת־אֹיְבֵיכֶםyour enemies,בָּרֲכוּblessאֶת־מְקַלְלֵיכֶםthem that curse you,הֵיטִיבוּdo goodלְשׂנְאֵיכֶםto them that hate you,וְהִתְפַּלֲלוּand prayבְּעַדforמַכְאִיבֵיכֶםthem which despitefully use you,וְרֹדְפֵיכֶם׃and persecute you;

    But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45. 45

    לְמַעַןThatתִּהְיוּyou may beבָנִיםthe childrenלַאֲבִיכֶםof your Fatherשֶׁבַּשָׁמָיִםwhich is in heaven:אֲשֶׁרforהוּאheמַזְרִיחַmaketh to riseשִׁמְשׁוֹhis sunלָרָעִיםon the evilוְלַטּוֹבִיםand on the good,וּמַמְטִירand sendeth rainעַל־הַצַּדִּיקִיםon the justוְגַםandעַל־הָרְשָׁעִים׃on the unjust.

    That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46. 46

    כִּיForאִם־תְּאֵהֲבוּif you loveאֶת־אֹהֲבֵיכֶםthem which love you,מַה־שְּׂכַרְכֶםwhat reward have you?הֲלֹאdo not evenגַּם־הַמֹּכְסִיםthe publicansיַעֲשׂוּ־זֹאת׃the same?

    For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47. 47

    וְאִם־תִּשְׁאֲלוּAnd if you saluteלִשְׁלוֹםpeace ofאֲחֵיכֶםyour brethrenבִּלְבָדonly,מַה־שִׁבְחֲכֶםwhat do you more than others?הֲלֹאdo not evenגַם־הַמֹּכְסִיםthe publicansיַעֲשׂוּ־זֹאת׃so?

    And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

48. 48

    לָכֵןthereforeהֱיוּBe youשְׁלֵמִיםperfect,כַּאֲשֶׁרeven asאֲבִיכֶםyour Fatherשֶׁבַּשָׁמַיִםwhich is in heavenשָׁלֵםperfect.הוּא׃is

    Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
