    אָזThenנָשָׂאwas led upהָרוּחַof the Spiritאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesusהַמִּדְבָּרָהinto the wildernessלְמַעַןthatיְנַסֵּהוּmight tempt himהַשָּׂטָן׃the devil.

    Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

    וַיְהִיAndאַחֲרֵיwhenצוּמוֹhe had fastedאַרְבָּעִיםfortyיוֹםdaysוְאַרְבָּעִיםand fortyלָיְלָהnights,וַיִּרְעָב׃he was afterward an hungred.

    And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

    וַיִּגַּשׁAnd when cameאֵלָיוto himהַמְנַסֶּהthe tempter,וַיֹּאמַרhe said,אִםIfבֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe Son of God,אַתָּהyou beדַּבֵּרcommandלָאֲבָנִיםthat stonesהָאֵלֶּהtheseוְתִהְיֶינָהbe madeלְלָחֶם׃bread.

    And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

    וַיַּעַןBut he answeredוַיֹּאמַרand said,הֵןBehold,כָּתוּבit is written,לֹאnotעַל־הַלֶּחֶםby breadלְבַדּוֹalone,יִחְיֶהshall liveהָאָדָםManכִּיbutעַל־כׇּל־מוֹצָאby every word that proceedeth out ofפִי־יְהוָֹה׃the mouth of God.

    But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

    וַיִּשָּׂאֵהוּThen taketh him upהַשָּׂטָןthe devilאֶל־עִירinto the cityהַקֹּדֶשׁholy,וַיַּעֲמִידֵהוּand setteth himעַל־פִּנַּת־גַּגon a pinnacle ofבֵּיתthe house ofהַמִּקְדָּשׁ׃the sanctuary,

    Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saithאֵלָיוunto him,אִםIfבֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe Son of God,אַתָּהyou beנְפֹלcast thyselfלְמָטָּהdown:כִּיforכָתוּבit is written,כִּיthatמַלְאָכָיוhis angelsיְצַוֶּה־לָּךְHe shall give charge concerning you:וְעַל־כַּפַּיִםand in their handsיִשָּׂאוּנְךָthey shall bear you up,פֶּן־תִּגֹּףlest at any time you dashבָּאֶבֶןagainst a stoneרַגְלֶךָ׃your foot.

    And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

    וַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֵלָיוunto him,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוְעוֹדIt is againכָּתוּבwritten,לֹאnotתְנַסֶּהYou shall temptאֵת־הָאָדוֹןthe Lordאֱלֹהֶיךָ׃your God.

    Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

    וַיּוֹסֶףAgain,הַשָּׂטָןthe devilוַיִּשָּׂאֵהוּtaketh him upאֶל־הַרinto a mountainגָּבֹהַּhigh,מְאֹדexceedingוַיַּרְאֵהוּand sheweth himאֶת־כׇּלallמַמְלְכוֹתthe kingdoms ofתֵּבֵלthe world,וּכְבוֹדָן׃and the glory of them;

    Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saithאֵלָיוunto him,כׇּל־זֹאתAll these thingsלְךָyou,אֶתְּנֶנָּהwill I giveאִם־תִּקֹּדif you will fall downוְתִשְׁתַּחֲוֶהand worshipלִי׃me.

    And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

  10. 10

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen saithאֵלָיוunto him,יֵשׁוּעַJesusסוּרGet you henceמִמֶּנִּיfrom me,הַשָּׂטָןSatan:כִּיforכָתוּבit is written,לָאָדוֹןthe Lordאֱלֹהֶיךָyour God,תִּשְׁתַּחֲוֶהYou shall worshipוְאוֹתוֹand himלְבַדּוֹonlyתַּעֲבֹד׃shall you serve.

    Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

  11. 11

    וַיִּרֶףThen leavethמִמֶּנּוּhimהַשָּׂטָןthe devil,וְהִנֵּהand, behold,נִגְּשׁוּcameאֵלָיוunto himמַלְאָכִיםangelsוַיְשָׁרֲתוּהוּ׃and ministered unto him.

    Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

    וַיְהִיNow whenכִּשְׁמֹעַhad heardיֵשׁוּעַJesusכִּיthatהִסְגִּירוּwas cast into prison,אֶת־יוֹחָנָןJohnוַיֵּלֶךְhe departedאֶלintoאֶרֶץthe land ofהַגָּלִיל׃Galilee;

    Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;

    וַיֵּצֵאAnd leavingמִנְּצֶרֶתNazareth,וַיָּבֹאhe cameוַיֵּשֵׁבand dweltבִּכְפַר־נַחוּםin Capernaum,אֲשֶׁרwhichעַל־שְׁפַתis upon the coast ofהַיָּםthe sea,בִּגְבוּלin the borders ofזְבֻלוּןZebulunוְנַפְתָּלִי׃and Naphtali:

    And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:

    לְמַלֹּאתThat it might be fulfilledהַנֶּאֱמָרwhich was spokenעַל־פִּיbyיְשַׁעְיָהוּEsaiasהַנָּבִיאthe prophet,לֵאמֹר׃saying,

    That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

    אַרְצָהThe land ofזְבֻלוּןZebulun,וְאַרְצָהand the land ofנַפְתָּלִיNaphtali,דֶּרֶךְby the way ofהַיָּםthe sea,עֵבֶרbeyondהַיַּרְדֵּןJordan,גְלִילGalilee ofהַגּוֹיִם׃the Gentiles;

    The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

  16. 16

    הָעָםThe peopleהָהֹלְכִיםwhich satבַּחֹשֶׁךְin darknessרָאוּsawאוֹרlight;גָּדוֹלgreatיֹשְׁבֵיand to them which satבְּאֶרֶץin the region andצַלְמָוֶתshadow of deathאוֹרlightנָגַהּis sprung upעֲלֵיהֶם׃upon them.

    The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

  17. 17

    מִן־הָעֵתFrom thatהַהִיאtimeהֵחֵלbeganיֵשׁוּעַJesusלִקְרֹאto preachקָרוֹאproclaiming,וְאָמוֹרand to say,שׁוּבוּRepent:כִּיforמַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהַשָּׁמַיִםheavenקׇרְבָהis at handלָבוֹא׃to come.

    From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

    וַיְהִיAndבְּהִתְהַלְּכוֹwalkingעַל־יַדbyיָם־הַגָּלִילthe sea of Galilee,וַיַּרְאJesus sawוְהִנֵּהand behold,שְׁנֵיtwoאֲנָשִׁיםmenאַחִיםbrethren,שִׁמְעוֹןSimonהַנִּקְרָאcalledפֶטְרוֹסPeter,וְאַנְדְּרַיand Andrewאָחִיוhis brother,מַשְׁלִיכִיםcastingמְצוֹדָהa netבַּיָּםinto the sea:כִּיforדַיָּגִיםfishers.הֵם׃they were

    And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

  19. 19

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,לְכוּFollowאַחֲרָיme,וַאֲשִׂימְכֶםand I will make youלְדַיְּגֵיfishers ofאֲנָשִׁים׃men.

    And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

  20. 20

    וַיַּעַזְבוּAnd they leftמְהֵרָהstraightwayאֵת־הַמִּכְמֹרוֹתtheir nets,וַיֵּלְכוּand followedאַחֲרָיו׃him.

    And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

  21. 21

    וַיְהִיAndכְּעָבְרוֹgoing onמִשָּׁםfrom thence,וַיַּרְאhe sawשְׁנֵיtwoאֲנָשִׁיםmenאַחִיםbrethrenאֲחֵרִיםother,אֶת־יַעֲקֹבJamesבֶּן־זַבְדַּיthe son of Zebedee,וְאֶת־יוֹחָנָןand Johnאָחִיוhis brother,בׇּאֳנִיָּהin a shipעִם־זַבְדַּיwith Zebedeeאֲבִיהֶםtheir father,וְהֵמָּהand they wereמְתַקְּנִיםmendingאֶת־מִכְמְרוֹתָםtheir nets;וַיִּקְרָאand he calledאֲלֵיהֶם׃them.

    And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.

  22. 22

    וַיַּעַזְבוּAnd they leftמְהֵרָהimmediatelyאֶת־הׇאֳנִיָּהthe shipוְאֶת־אֲבִיהֶםand their father,וַיֵּלְכוּand followedאַחֲרָיו׃him.

    And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

  23. 23

    וַיָּסׇבAnd went aboutיֵשׁוּעַJesusבְּכׇל־הַגָּלִילall Galilee,וַיְלַמֵּדteachingבִּכְנֵסִיּוֹתֵיהֶםin their synagogues,וַיְבַשֵּׂרand preachingבְּשׂוֹרַתthe gospel ofהַמַּלְכוּתthe kingdom,וַיְרַפֵּאand healingכׇּל־מַחֲלָהall manner of sicknessוְכׇל־מַדְוֶהand all manner of diseaseבָּעָם׃among the people.

    And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

  24. 24

    וְשִׁמְעוֹAnd his fameיָצָאwentבְּכׇל־אֶרֶץthroughout allסוּרְיָאSyria:וַיָּבִיאוּand they broughtאֵלָיוunto himאֵת־כׇּל־הַחוֹלִיםall sick peopleהַמְעֻנִּיםthat were taken withבְּכׇל־חֳלָיִםdivers diseasesוּמַכְאוֹבִיםand torments,וַאֲחוּזֵיand those which were possessed withשֵׁדִיםdevils,וּמֻכֵּיand those which wereיָרֵחַlunatick,וּנְכֵיand those that hadאֵבָרִיםthe palsy;וַיִּרְפָּאֵם׃and he healed them.

    And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

  25. 25

    וַיֵּלְכוּAnd there followedאַחֲרָיוhimהֲמֹנִיםgreatהֲמֹנִיםmultitudes of peopleמִן־הַגָּלִילfrom Galilee,וּמִן־עֶשֶׂרand fromהֶעָרִיםDecapolis,וְמִירוּשָׁלַיִםand from Jerusalem,וִיהוּדָהand from Judaea,וּמֵעֵבֶרand from beyondלַיַּרְדֵּן׃Jordan.

    And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judæa, and from beyond Jordan.
