1. 1

   בַּיָּמִיםInהָהֵםthose daysקָםcameיוֹחָנָןJohnהַמַּטְבִּילthe Baptist,וַיְהִיand wasקֹרֵאpreachingבְמִדְבַּרin the wilderness ofיְהוּדָהJudaea,לֵאמֹר׃saying,

   In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judæa,

2. 2

   שׁוּבוּRepent you:כִּיforמַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהַשָּׁמַיִםheavenקׇרְבָהis at handלָבוֹא׃to come.

   And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

3. 3

   כִּיForזֶהthisהוּאis heאֲשֶׁרthatנִבָּאwas spokenעָלָיוof himיְשַׁעְיָהוּby Esaiasהַנָּבִיאthe prophet,לֵאמֹרsaying,קוֹלThe voice ofקוֹרֵאone cryingבַמִּדְבָּרin the wilderness,פַּנּוּPrepare youדֶּרֶךְthe way ofיְהוָֹהthe Lord,יַשְׁרוּmake straightמְסִלּוֹתָיו׃his paths.

   For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

4. 4

   וְיוֹחָנָןAnd the same Johnלְבוּשׁוֹhad his raiment ofשְׂעַרhair ofגְּמַלִּיםcamel's,וְאֵזוֹרand a girdle ofעוֹרleathernבְּמׇתְנָיוabout his loins;וּמַאֲכָלוֹand his meat wasחֲגָבִיםlocustsוּדְבַשׁand honeyהַיָּעַר׃wild.

   And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

   וַתֵּצֵאThen went outאֵלָיוto himיְרוּשָׁלַיִםJerusalem,וְכׇל־יְהוּדָהand all Judaea,וְכׇל־כִּכַּרand all the region round aboutהַיַּרְדֵּן׃Jordan,

   Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judæa, and all the region round about Jordan,

6. 6

   וַיִּטָּבְלוּAnd were baptizedעַל־יָדוֹof himבַּיַּרְדֵּןin Jordan,וַיִּתְוַדּוּconfessingאֶת־חַטֹּאתָם׃their sins.

   And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

7. 7

   וַיְהִיBut whenכִּרְאוֹתוֹhe sawרַבִּיםmanyמִן־הַפְּרוּשִׁיםof the Phariseesוְהַצַּדּוּקִיםand Sadduceesנִגָּשִׁיםcomeלְהִטָּבֵלto his baptism,וַיֹּאמֶרhe saidלָהֶםunto them,יַלְדֵיO generation ofצִפְעוֹנִיםvipers,מִיwhoהִשְׂכִּילhath warnedאֶתְכֶםyouלְהִמָּלֵטto fleeמִן־הַקֶּצֶףfrom the wrathהֶעָתִידwhich isלָבֹא׃to come?

   But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8. 8

   לָכֵןThereforeעֲשׂוּbring forthפְרִיfruitsרָאוּיmeetלַתְּשׁוּבָה׃for repentance:

   Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

9. 9

   וְאַל־תַּחְשְׁבוּAnd think notבִלְבַבְכֶםwithin yourselves,לֵאמֹרto sayאַבְרָהָםAbrahamהוּאhe isאָבִינוּour father:כִּיforאֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,כִּיthatמִן־הָאֲבָנִיםof stonesהָאֵלֶּהtheseיָכוֹלis ableהָאֱלֹהִיםGodלְהָקִיםto raise upבָּנִיםchildrenלְאַבְרָהָם׃unto Abraham.

   And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

10. 10

    וּכְבָרAnd now alsoהוּשַׂםis laidהַגַּרְזֶןthe axeעַל־שֹׁרֶשׁunto the root ofהָעֵצִיםthe trees:וְהִנֵּהthereforeכׇל־עֵץevery treeאֲשֶׁרwhichאֵינֶנּוּnotעֹשֶׂהbringeth forthפְּרִיfruitטוֹבgoodיִכָּרֵתis hewn down,וְיֻשְׁלַךְand castבָּאֵשׁ׃into the fire.

    And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

11. 11

    הֵןIndeedאָנֹכִיIטוֹבֵלbaptizeאֶתְכֶםyouבַּמַּיִםwith waterלַתְּשׁוּבָהunto repentance:וְהַבָּאbut he that comethאַחֲרַיafter meחָזָקis mightierמִמֶּנִּיthan I,אֲשֶׁרwhoseקָטֹנְתִּיI am not worthyמִשְּׂאֵתto bearנְעָלָיוhis shoes:וְהוּאheיִטְבֹּלshall baptizeאֶתְכֶםyouבְּרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁwith the Holy Ghost,וּבָאֵשׁ׃and with fire:

    I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

12. 12

    וּבְיָדוֹand in his handהַמִּזְרֶהis the fan,וְזָרָהand he will throughly purgeאֶת־גָּרְנוֹhis floor,וְאָסַףand gatherאֶת־דְּגָנוֹhis wheatאֶל־אוֹצָרוֹinto the garner;וְאֶת־הַמֹּץbut the chaffיִשְׂרְפֶנּוּhe will burn upבָאֵשׁwith fireאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹאnotתִכְבֶּה׃shall be quenched.

    Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

13. 13

    וַיָּבֹאThen comethיֵשׁוּעַJesusמִן־הַגָּלִילfrom Galileeהַיַּרְדֵּנָהto Jordanאֶל־יוֹחָנָןunto John,לְהִטָּבֵלto be baptizedעַל־יָדוֹ׃of him.

    Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

14. 14

    וְיוֹחָנָןBut Johnחָשַׂךְforbadאוֹתוֹhim,לֵאמֹרsaying,אָנֹכִיIצָרִיךְhave needלְהִטָּבֵלto be baptizedעַל־יָדֶךָof you,וְאַתָּהandבָּאcome youאֵלַי׃to me?

    But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

15. 15

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeringיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֵלָיוunto him,הַנִּיחָהSuffer it to be soלִּיnow:כִּיforכֵןthusנָאֲוָהit becomethלִשְׁנֵינוּusלְמַלֵּאto fulfilכׇּל־הַצְּדָקָהall righteousness.וַיַּנַּחThen he sufferedלוֹ׃him.

    And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

16. 16

    וַיְהִיAndכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenנִטְבַּלhe was baptized,יֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיְמַהֵרstraightwayוַיַּעַלwent upמִן־הַמָּיִםout of the water:וְהִנֵּהand, lo,הַשָּׁמַיִםthe heavensנִפְתְּחוּ־לוֹwere opened unto him,וַיַּרְאand he sawאֶת־רוּחַthe Spirit ofאֱלֹהִיםGodיוֹרֵדdescendingכְּיוֹנָהlike a dove,וְנָחand lightingעָלָיו׃upon him:

    And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17. 17

    וְהִנֵּהAnd loקוֹלa voiceמִן־הַשָּׁמַיִםfrom heaven,אוֹמֵרsaying,זֶהThisבְּנִיis my Sonיְדִידִיbeloved,אֲשֶׁר־רָצִיתִיwhom I am well pleasedבּוֹ׃in him.

    And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
