1. 1

   וַיְהִיNowבִּימֵיin the days ofהוֹרְדוֹסHerodהַמֶּלֶךְthe king,כַּאֲשֶׁרwhenנוֹלַדwas bornיֵשׁוּעַJesusבְּבֵית־לֶחֶםin Bethlehem ofיְהוּדָהJudaea,וַיָּבֹאוּbehold, there cameמְגוּשִׁיםwise menמֵאֶרֶץfrom the land ofמִזְרָחthe eastלִירוּשָׁלַיִם׃to Jerusalem,

   Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

   וַיֹּאמְרוּSaying,אַיֵּהWhere isמֶלֶךְthe King ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsאֲשֶׁרthatיֻלַּדis born?כִּיforרָאִינוּwe have seenאֶת־כּוֹכָבוֹhis starבַּמִּזְרָחin the east,וַנָּבֹאand are comeלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֹתto worshipלוֹ׃him.

   Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

3. 3

   וַיְהִיWhenכִּשְׁמֹעַhad heardהוֹרְדוֹסHerodהַמֶּלֶךְthe kingאֶת־דִּבְרֵיהֶםthese things,וַיֶּחֱרַדhe was troubled,הוּאhimself,וְכׇל־יְרוּשָׁלַיִםand all Jerusalemעִמּוֹ׃with him.

   When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

   וַיַּקְהֵלAnd when he had gatheredאֶת־כׇּל־רָאשֵׁיall the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְסוֹפְרֵיand scribes ofהָעָםthe peopleוַיִּשְׁאַלtogether, he demanded ofאֹתָםthem,לֵאמֹרsaying,אֵיפֹהwhereיִוָּלֵדshould be bornהַמָּשִׁיחַ׃Christ.

   And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they saidלוֹunto him,בְּבֵית־לֶחֶםIn Bethlehem ofיְהוּדָהJudaea:כִּי־כֵןfor thusכָּתוּבit is writtenבְּיַדbyהַנָּבִיא׃the prophet,

   And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judæa: for thus it is written by the prophet,

   וְאַתָּהAnd youבֵּית־לֶחֶםBethlehem,אֶרֶץin the land ofיְהוּדָהJudah,אֵינְךָart notצָעִירthe leastבְּאַלֻּפֵיamong the princes ofיְהוּדָהJudah:כִּיforמִמְּךָout of youיֵצֵאshall comeמוֹשֵׁלa Governor,אֲשֶׁרthatיִרְעֶהshall ruleאֶת־עַמִּיmy peopleיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel.

   And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

7. 7

   אָזThenקָרָאcalledהוֹרְדוֹסHerodלַמְּגוּשִׁיםthe wise menבַּסֵּתֶרprivily,וַיַּחְקֹרand enquired of them diligentlyלָדַעַתto knowאֶת־הָעֵתthe timeאֲשֶׁרwhichנִרְאָהappearedהַכּוֹכָב׃the star.

   Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

8. 8

   וַיִּשְׁלָחֵםAnd he sent themבֵּית־לֶחֶםto Bethlehem,וַיֹּאמַרand said,לְכוּGoחִקְרוּand searchהֵיטֵבdiligentlyעַל־דְּבַרforהַנָּעַרthe young child;וְהָיָהand whenכִּי־תִמְצְאוּןyou have foundאֹתוֹhim,וְהִגַּדְתֶּםbring word againלִיunto me,וְאָבֹאָהthat I may comeלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֹת־לוֹand worship himגַּם־אָנִי׃also.

   And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

9. 9

   וַיְהִיWhenכְּשׇׁמְעָםthey had heardאֶת־דִּבְרֵיthe words ofהַמֶּלֶךְthe king,וַיֵּלֵכוּthey departed;וְהִנֵּהand, lo,הַכּוֹכָבthe star,אֲשֶׁר־רָאוּwhich they sawבַמִּזְרָחin the east,הָלַךְwentלִפְנֵיהֶםbefore them,עַדtillאֲשֶׁר־בָּאit cameוַיַּעֲמֹדand stoodמִמַּעַלoverלַאֲשֶׁר־הָיָהwhereשָׁםthereהַיָּלֶד׃the young child was.

   When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

10. 10

    וַיִּרְאוּWhen they sawאֶת־הַכּוֹכָבthe star,וַיִּשְׂמְחוּthey rejoicedשִׂמְחָהwith joyגְדוֹלָהgreatעַד־מְאֹד׃exceeding.

    When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

11. 11

    וַיָּבֹאוּAnd when they were comeהַבַּיְתָהinto the house,וַיִּמְצְאוּthey sawאֶת־הַיֶּלֶדthe young childעִם־מִרְיָםwith Maryאִמּוֹhis mother,וַיִּפְּלוּand fell downעַל־פְּנֵיהֶםon their faces,וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ־לוֹand worshiped him:וַיִּפְתְּחוּand when they had openedאֶת־אוֹצְרוֹתָםtheir treasures,וַיַּקְרִיבוּthey presentedלוֹunto himמִנְחָהgifts;זָהָבgold,וּלְבוֹנָהand frankincense,וָמֹר׃and myrrh.

    And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

12. 12

    וַיְצֻוּוּAnd being warned of Godבַחֲלוֹםin a dreamלְבִלְתִּיthat they should notשׁוּבreturnאֶל־הוֹרְדוֹסto Herod,וַיֵּלְכוּthey departedבְּדֶרֶךְby wayאַחֵרanotherאֶל־אַרְצָם׃into their own country.

    And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

13. 13

    הֵםAnd when theyהָלְכוּwere departedמִשָּׁםfrom thence,וְהִנֵּהbehold,מַלְאַךְthe angel ofיְהוָֹהthe Lordנִרְאָהappearethאֶל־יוֹסֵףto Josephבַּחֲלוֹםin a dream,לֵאמֹרsaying,קוּםArise,קַחand takeאֶת־הַיֶּלֶדthe young childוְאֶת־אִמּוֹand his mother,וּבְרַח־לְךָand fleeמִצְרַיְמָהinto Egypt,וֶהְיֵה־שָׁםand be you thereעַד־אִםuntilאָמַרְתִּיI bring wordאֵלֶיךָunto you:כִּיforהוֹרְדוֹסHerodמְבַקֵּשׁwill seekאֶת־נֶפֶשׁthe life ofהַנַּעַרthe young childלְקַחְתָּהּ׃to destroy him.

    And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

14. 14

    וַיָּקׇםWhen he arose,וַיִּקַּחhe tookאֶת־הַיֶּלֶדthe young childוְאֶת־אִמּוֹand his motherלָיְלָהby night,וַיִּבְרַחand departedמִצְרָיְמָה׃into Egypt:

    When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

15. 15

    וַיְהִי־שָׁםAnd was thereעַדuntilמוֹתthe death ofהוֹרְדוֹסHerod:לְמַלֹּאתthat it might be fulfilledאֶת־דְּבַרthe word ofיְהוָֹהthe Lordבְּיַדbyהַנָּבִיאthe prophet,לֵאמֹרsaying,מִמִּצְרַיִםOut of Egyptקָרָאתִיhave I calledלִבְנִי׃my son.

    And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

16. 16

    וַיַּרְאThen sawהוֹרְדוֹסHerodכִּיthatהֵתֵלּוּmockedבוֹhimהַמְּגוּשִׁיםthe wise men,וַיִּקְצֹףand was wrothמְאֹדexceeding,וַיִּשְׁלַחand sent forth,וַיַּהֲרֹגand slewאֶת־כׇּל־הַיְלָדִיםall the childrenאֲשֶׁרthat wereבְּבֵית־לֶחֶםin Bethlehem,וּבְכׇל־גְּבוּלֶיהָand in all the coasts thereof,לְמִבֶּן־שְׁנָתַיִםfrom two years oldוּלְמָטָּהand under,לְפִיaccording toהָעֵתthe timeאֲשֶׁרwhichחָקַרhe had diligently enquiredמִפִּיofהַמְּגוּשִׁים׃the wise men.

    Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

17. 17

    אָזThenהוּקַםwas fulfilledהַנֶּאֱמָרthat which was spokenבְּפִיbyיִרְמְיָהוּJeremiahהַנָּבִיאthe prophet,לֵאמֹר׃saying,

    Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,

18. 18

    קוֹלA voiceבְּרָמָהin Ramaנִשְׁמָעwas there heard,נְהִיlamentation,וּבְכִיand weeping,תַמְרוּרִיםand great mourning,רָחֵלRachelמְבַכָּהweepingעַל־בָּנֶיהָfor her children,מֵאֲנָהand would notלְהִנָּחֵםbe comfortedעַל־בָּנֶיהָfor her children,כִּיbecauseאֵינֶנּוּ׃they are not.

    In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

19. 19

    וַיְהִיBut whenאַחֲרֵיafterמוֹתthe death ofהוֹרְדוֹסHerod,וְהִנֵּהbehold,מַלְאַךְan angel ofיְהוָֹהthe Lordנִרְאָהappearethבַחֲלוֹםin a dreamאֶל־יוֹסֵףto Josephבְּאֶרֶץin the land ofמִצְרָיִם׃Egypt,

    But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

20. 20

    וַיֹּאמֶרSayingאֵלָיוunto him,קוּםArise,קַחand takeאֶת־הַיֶּלֶדthe young childוְאֶת־אִמּוֹand his mother,וְלֵךְand goשׁוּבbackאֶל־אֶרֶץinto the land ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsrael:כִּיforמֵתוּthey are deadהַמְבַקְּשִׁיםwhich soughtאֶת־נֶפֶשׁthe life ofהַיָּלֶד׃the young child.

    Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

21. 21

    וַיָּקׇםAnd he arose,וַיִּקַּחand tookאֶת־הַיֶּלֶדthe young childוְאֶת־אִמּוֹand his mother,וַיָּבֹאand cameאַרְצָהinto the land ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel.

    And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

22. 22

    וּכְשׇׁמְעוֹBut when he heardכִּיthatאַרְכְלוֹסArchelausמָלַךְdid reignבִּיהוּדָהin Judaeaתַּחַתin the room ofהוֹרְדוֹסHerodאָבִיוhis father,וַיִּירָאhe was afraidלָלֶכֶתto goשָׁמָּהthither:וַיְצֻוֶּהnotwithstanding, being warned of Godבַחֲלוֹםin a dream,וַיֵּלֵךְhe turnedלוֹaside,אֶל־אַרְצוֹתinto the parts ofהַגָּלִיל׃Galilee:

    But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judæa in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:

23. 23

    וַיָּבֹאAnd he cameוַיֵּשֶׁבand dweltבְּעִירin a cityהַנִּקְרֵאתcalledנְצָרֶתNazareth:לְמַלֹּאתthat it might be fulfilledהַדָּבָרwhich wasהַנֶּאֱמָרspokenעַל־פִּיbyהַנְּבִיאִיםthe prophets,כִּיthatנָצְרִיA Nazareneיִקָּרֵאshall be calledלוֹ׃of him.

    And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
