1. 1

   וַיְהִיWhenלִפְנוֹתwas come,הַבֹּקֶרthe morningוַיִּוָּעֲצוּtook counselכׇּל־רָאשֵׁיall the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְזִקְנֵיand elders ofהָעָםthe peopleעַל־יֵשׁוּעַagainst Jesusלַהֲמִיתוֹ׃to put him to death:

   When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:

2. 2

   וַיַּאַסְרוּAnd when they had boundאֹתוֹhim,וַיּוֹלִיכֻהוּthey led him awayמִשָּׁםfrom thence,וַיִּמְסְרֻהוּand delivered himאֶל־פּוֹנְטִיּוֹסto PontiusפִּילָטוֹסPilateהַהֶגְמוֹן׃the governor.

   And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

   וַיַּרְאWhen sawיְהוּדָהThen Judas,הַמֹּסֵרwhich had betrayedאוֹתוֹhim,כִּיthatהִרְשִׁיעֻהוּhe was condemned,וַיִּנָּחֵםrepented himself,וַיָּשֶׁבand brought againאֶת־שְׁלֹשִׁיםthe thirtyהַכֶּסֶףpieces of silverאֶל־רָאשֵׁיto the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַזְּקֵנִיםand elders,לֵאמֹר׃Saying,

   Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

   חָטָאתִיI have sinnedכִּי־דָםin that bloodנָקִיinnocentהִסְגָּרְתִּיI have betrayed.וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they said,מַה־לָּנוּWhat is that to us?וְלָזֹאתsee youאַתָּהthyselfתִּרְאֶה׃to that.

   Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.

   וַיַּשְׁלֵךְAnd he cast downאֶת־הַכֶּסֶףthe pieces of silverאֶל־הַהֵיכׇלin the temple,וַיִּפֶןand departed,וַיֵּלֶךְand wentוַיֵּחָנַק׃and hanged himself.

   And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

   וַיִּקְחוּAnd tookרָאשֵׁיthe chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsאֶת־הַכֶּסֶףthe silver pieces,וַיֹּאמְרוּand said,לֹא־נָכוֹןIt is not lawfulלָנוּfor usלְתִתּוֹfor to put themאֶל־אֲרוֹןintoהַקָּרְבָּןthe treasury,כִּי־מְחִירbecause the price ofדָּמִיםbloodהוּא׃it is.

   And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.

   וַיִּוָּעֲצוּAnd they took counsel,וַיִּקְנוּ־בוֹand bought with themאֶת־שְׁדֵהthe field ofהַיּוֹצֵרthe potter,לִקְבוּרַתto buryהַגֵּרִים׃strangers in.

   And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.

8. 8

   עַל־כֵּןWhereforeיִקָּרֵאwas called,לַשָּׂדֶהfieldהַהוּאthatשְׂדֵהThe field ofהַדָּםblood,עַדuntoהַיּוֹםday.הַזֶּה׃this

   Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.

   אָזThenנִתְמַלֵּאwas fulfilledמַה־שֶׁנֶּאֱמַרthat which was spokenבְּיַדbyיִרְמְיָהJeremyהַנָּבִיאthe prophet,וַיִּקְחוּsaying, And they tookשְׁלֹשִׁיםthe thirtyהַכֶּסֶףpieces of silver,אֶדֶרthe price ofהַיְקָרhim that was valued,אֲשֶׁרwhomיָקַרthey did value,מֵעַל־בְּנֵיof the children ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel;

   Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;

    וַיִּתְּנוּAnd gaveאֹתָםthemאֶל־שְׂדֵהfor the field ofהַיּוֹצֵרthe potter,כַּאֲשֶׁרasצִוָּהappointedהָאָדוֹןthe Lordאוֹתִי׃me.

    And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.

11. 11

    וְיֵשׁוּעַAnd Jesusהׇעֳמַדstoodלִפְנֵיbeforeהַהֶגְמוֹןthe governor:וַיִּשְׁאָלֵהוּand asked him,הַהֶגְמוֹןthe governorלֵאמֹרsaying,הַאַתָּהAre youהוּאheמֶלֶךְthe King ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews?וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidיֵשׁוּעַJesusאַתָּהunto him, Youאָמָרְתָּ׃sayest.

    And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.

    וְרָאשֵׁיAnd when by the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַזְּקֵנִיםand elders,דִּבְּרוּthey spokeעָלָיוagainst himשִׂטְנָתָםtheir accusation,וְהוּאheלֹא־עָנָהansweredדָבָר׃nothing.

    And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

13. 13

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen saidאֵלָיוunto him,פִּילָטוֹסPilateהַאֵינְךָDo you notשֹׁמֵעַhearכַּמָּהhow many thingsהֵםtheyמְעִידִיםwitnessבָּךְ׃against you?

    Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?

14. 14

    וְלֹאAndעָנָהוּhe answered himאַף־דָּבָרto neverאֶחָדa word;וַיִּתְמַהּinsomuch that marvelledהַהֶגְמוֹןthe governorעַד־מְאֹד׃greatly.

    And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

15. 15

    וְהַהֶגְמוֹןNow the governorהָיָהwas wontמַתִּירto releaseלָעָםunto the peopleבְּכׇל־חַגat that feastאָסִירa prisonerאֶחָדone,אֵת־אֲשֶׁרwhomיֶחְפָּצוּ׃they would.

    Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.

16. 16

    וּבָעֵתAnd at timeהַהִיאthatהָיָהthere wasלָהֶםunto themאָסִירa prisonerמְפֻרְסָםnotable,וּשְׁמוֹcalledבַּר־אַבָּא׃Barabbas.

    And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.

17. 17

    וַיְהִיThereforeכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenנִקְהֲלוּthey were gathered together,וַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,פִּילָטוֹסPilateאֶת־מִיWhomתִרְצוּwill youשֶׁאַתִּירthat I releaseלָכֶםunto you?אֵת־בַּר־אַבָּאBarabbas,אוֹorאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesusהַנִּקְרָאwhich is calledבְּשֵׁם־מָשִׁיחַ׃Christ?

    Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?

18. 18

    כִּיForיָדַעhe knewאֲשֶׁרthatמִקִּנְאָתָםfor envyבּוֹof himהִסְגִּרֻהוּ׃they had delivered him.

    For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

19. 19

    וַיְהִיWhenבְּשִׁבְתּוֹhe was set downעַל־כִּסֵּאon the judgmentהַדִּיןseat,וַתִּשְׁלַחsentאֵלָיוunto him,אִשְׁתּוֹhis wifeלֵאמֹרsaying,אַל־תְּהִיLet there be nothingיָדְךָof your handבַּצַּדִּיקwith the just man:הַזֶּהthatכִּיforבַעֲבוּרוֹbecause of him.הַרְבֵּהmany thingsעֻנֵּיתִיI have sufferedהַיּוֹםthis dayבַּחֲלוֹם׃in a dream

    When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

20. 20

    וְרָאשֵׁיBut the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַזְּקֵנִיםand eldersהִסִּיתוּpersuadedאֶת־הֲמוֹןthe multitudeהָעָםof the peopleלִשְׁאֹלthat they should askלָהֶםfor themאֵת־בַּר־אַבָּאBarabbas,וּלְאַבֵּדand destroyאֵת־יֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus.

    But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

21. 21

    וַיַּעַןAnsweredהַהֶגְמוֹןThe governorוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אֶת־מִיWhetherמִשְׁנֵיהֶםof the twainתִּרְצוּwill youשֶׁאַתִּירthat I releaseלָכֶםunto you?וַיֹּאמְרוּThey said,אֵת־בַּר־אַבָּא׃Barabbas.

    The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.

22. 22

    וַיֹּאמֶרSaithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,פִּילָטוֹסPilateוּמָה־אֶעֱשֶׂהWhat shall I do thenלְיֵשׁוּעַwith Jesusהַנִּקְרָאwhich is calledבְּשֵׁם־מָשִׁיחַChrist?וַיַּעֲנוּThey say unto him,כֻלָּםall,יִצָּלֵב׃Let him be crucified.

    Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.

23. 23

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd said,הַהֶגְמוֹןthe governorוּמֶה־עָשָׂהWhy, what hath he doneרָעָהof evil?וַיִּצְעֲקוּBut they cried outעוֹדthe more,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,יִצָּלֵב׃Let him be crucified.

    And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

24. 24

    וַיְהִיWhenכִּרְאוֹתsawפִּילָטוֹסPilateכִּיthatלֹא־יוֹעִילhe could prevailמְאוּמָהnothing,וְכִיbut that ratherרָבְתָהincreasedעוֹדthe moreהַמְּהוּמָהa tumultוַיִּקַּחhe tookמַיִםwater,וַיִּרְחַץand washedאֶת־יָדָיוhis handsלְעֵינֵיbeforeהָעָםthe multitude,וַיֹּאמַרsaying,נָקִיinnocentאָנֹכִיI amמִדַּםof the blood ofהַצַּדִּיקjust person:הַזֶּהthisאַתֶּםsee youרְאוּ׃to it.

    When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

25. 25

    וַיַּעֲנוּThen answeredכׇל־הָעָםall the people,וַיֹּאמְרוּand said,דָּמוֹHis bloodעָלֵינוּbe on us,וְעַל־בָּנֵינוּ׃and on our children.

    Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

26. 26

    אָזThenהִתִּירreleased heלָהֶםunto them:אֵת־בַּר־אַבָּאBarabbasוְאֵתandיֵשׁוּעַJesusהִכָּהhe scourgedבַשׂוֹטִיםwith scourges,וַיִּמְסֹרhe deliveredאוֹתוֹhimלְהִצָּלֵב׃to be crucified.

    Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

27. 27

    וַיִּקְחוּThen tookאַנְשֵׁיthe menהַצָּבָאof warאֲשֶׁרofלַהֶגְמוֹןthe governorאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיְבִיאֻהוּintoאֶל־בֵּית־הַמִּשְׁפָּטthe common hall,וַיַּאַסְפוּand gatheredעָלָיוunto himאֵת־כׇּל־הַגְּדוּד׃the whole band of soldiers.

    Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.

28. 28

    וַיַּפְשִׁיטוּAnd they strippedאוֹתוֹhim,אֶת־בְּגָדָיוof his garments,וַיַּעַטְפֻהוּand put on himמְעִילa robeשָׁנִי׃scarlet.

    And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.

29. 29

    וַיְשָׂרֲגוּAnd when they had plattedקֹצִיםof thorns,וַיַּעֲשׂוּand madeעֲטֶרֶתa crownוַיָּשִׂימוּthey put itעַל־רֹאשׁוֹupon his head,וְקָנֶהand a reedבִּימִינוֹin his right hand:וַיִּכְרְעוּand they bowed the kneeלְפָנָיוbefore him,וַיִּתְלוֹצֲצוּand mockedבוֹhim,לֵאמֹרsaying,שָׁלוֹםHail,לְךָto you,מֶלֶךְKing ofהַיְּהוּדִים׃the Jews!

    And when they had plaited a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

30. 30

    וַיָּרֹקּוּAnd they spitבּוֹupon him,וַיִּקְחוּand tookאֶת־הַקָּנֶהthe reed,וַיַּכֻּהוּand smote himעַל־רֹאשׁוֹ׃on the head.

    And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.

31. 31

    וְאַחֲרֵיAnd afterהִתְלוֹצֲצָםthat they had mockedבּוֹhim,הִפְשִׁיטוּthey took offאוֹתוֹfrom himאֶת־הַמְּעִילthe robe,וַיַּלְבִּישֻׁהוּand put on himאֶת־בְּגָדָיוhis own raiment,וַיּוֹבִילֻהוּand led him awayלִצְלֹב׃to crucify him.

    And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

32. 32

    וַיְהִיAndבְצֵאתָםas they came out,וַיִּמְצְאוּthey foundאִישׁa manקוּרִינִיof Cyrene,וּשְׁמוֹby nameשִׁמְעוֹןSimonוַיֶּאֶנְסוּthey compelledאֹתוֹhimלָשֵׂאתto bearלוֹfor himאֶת־צְלוּבוֹ׃his cross.

    And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.

33. 33

    וַיָּבֹאוּAnd when they were comeאֶל־הַמָּקוֹםunto a placeהַנִּקְרָאcalledגָּלְגָּלְתָּאGolgotha,הוּאthat is to say,מְקוֹםa place ofגֻּלְגֹּלֶת׃a skull,

    And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,

34. 34

    וַיִּתְּנוּ־לוֹThey gave himלִשְׁתּוֹתto drinkחֹמֶץvinegarמָסוּךְmingledבִּמְרוֹרוֹתwith gall:וַיִּטְעַםand when he had tasted thereof,וְלֹאnot.אָבָהhe wouldלִשְׁתּוֹת׃drink

    They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

35. 35

    וַיְהִיAndכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenצָלְבוּthey crucifiedאוֹתוֹhim,וַיְחַלְּקוּand partedאֶת־בְּגָדָיוhis garments,לָהֶםamong them,וַיַּפִּלוּcastingגוֹרָלlots:לְמַלֹּאתthat it might be fulfilledאֵת־אֲשֶׁר־נֶאֱמַרwhich was spokenבְּפִיbyהַנָּבִיאthe prophet,יְחַלְּקוּThey partedבְגָדַיmy garmentsלָהֶםamong them,וְעַל־לְבוּשִׁיand upon my vestureיַפִּילוּdid they castגוֹרָל׃lots.

    And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

36. 36

    וַיֵּשְׁבוּAnd sitting downשָׁמָּהthere,וַיִּשְׁמְרוּthey watchedאוֹתוֹ׃him there;

    And sitting down they watched him there;

37. 37

    וַיָּשִׂימוּAnd set upאֶת־דְּבַרthe writing ofאַשְׁמָתוֹhis accusationמִמַּעַלoverלְרֹאשׁוֹhis headוַיִּכְתְּבוּwritten,זֶהTHISהוּאISיֵשׁוּעַJESUSמֶלֶךְTHE KING OFהַיְּהוּדִים׃THE JEWS.

    And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

38. 38

    וַיִּצָּלְבוּThen were there crucifiedאִתּוֹwith himשְׁנֵיtwoפָרִיצִיםthieves,אֶחָדoneמִימִינוֹon the right hand,וְאֶחָדand anotherמִשְּׂמֹאלוֹ׃on the left.

    Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.

39. 39

    וְהָעֹבְרִיםAnd they that passed byגִּדְּפוּreviledאוֹתוֹhim,וַיָּנִיעוּwaggingאֶת־רֹאשָׁם׃their heads,

    And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,

40. 40

    וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd saying,אַתָּהYouהַהֹרֵסthat destroyestאֶת־הַהֵיכׇלthe temple,וּבֹנֵהוּand buildest itבִּשְׁלֹשֶׁתin threeיָמִיםdays,הוֹשַׁעsaveלְנַפְשֶׁךָthyself.וְאִםIfבֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe Son of God,אַתָּהyou beרְדָהcome downמִן־הַצְּלוּב׃from the cross.

    And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

41. 41

    וְכֵןLikewiseהִלְעִיגוּmocking him,גַּם־רָאשֵׁיalso the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsעִם־הַסּוֹפְרִיםwith the scribesוְהַזְּקֵנִיםand elders,לֵאמֹר׃said,

    Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,

42. 42

    אֶת־אֲחֵרִיםothersהוֹשִׁיעַHe saved;וּלְעַצְמוֹhimselfלֹאnotיוּכַלis he ableלְהוֹשִׁיעַto save.אִם־Ifמֶלֶךְhe be the King ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsrael,הוּאhe be,יֵרֶד־נָאlet him come downעַתָּהnowמִן־הַצְּלוּבfrom the cross,וְנַאֲמִיןand we will believeבּוֹ׃him.

    He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

43. 43

    בָּטַחHe trustedבֵּאלֹהִיםin God;עַתָּהnowיְפַלְּטֵהוּlet him deliver himאִם־חָפֵץif he will haveבּוֹhim:כִּיforאָמַרhe said,בֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe Son of God.אֲנִי׃I am

    He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

44. 44

    וְכָזֹאתAnd likewiseחֵרְפֻהוּreproached himגַּם־הַפָּרִיצִיםthe thieves also,הַנִּצְלָבִיםwhich were crucifiedאִתּוֹ׃with him,

    The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

45. 45

    וַיְהִיNow there wasחֹשֶׁךְdarknessעַל־כׇּל־הָאָרֶץover all the landמִןfromהַשָּׁעָהthe hourהַשִׁשִׁיתsixthעַדuntoהַשָּׁעָהthe hour.הַתְּשִׁיעִית׃ninth

    Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

46. 46

    וּכְעֵתAnd aboutהַשָּׁעָהthe hourהַתְּשִׁיעִיתninthוַיִּזְעַקcriedיֵשׁוּעַJesusבְּקוֹלwith a voice,גָּדוֹלloudאֵלִיEli,אֵלִיEli,לְמָהlamaשְׁבַקְתָּנִיsabachthani?וְהוּאthat is to say,אֵלִיMy God,אֵלִיmy God,לָמָּהwhyעֲזַבְתָּנִי׃have you forsaken me?

    And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

47. 47

    וַיִּשְׁמְעוּwhen they heard that,אֲנָשִׁיםSomeמִן־הָעֹמְדִיםof them that stoodשָׁםthere,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaid,הוּאThis manקוֹרֵאcallethאֶל־אֵלִיָּס׃for Elias.

    Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.

48. 48

    וַיְמַהֵרAnd straightwayאֶחָדoneמֵהֶםof themוַיָּרׇץran,וַיִּקַּחand tookסְפוֹגa spunge,וַיְמַלֵּאand filledאֹתוֹitחֹמֶץwith vinegar,וַיָּשֶׂםand put itעַל־קָנֶהon a reed,וַיַּשְׁקֵהוּ׃and gave him to drink.

    And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

49. 49

    וְיֶתֶרAnd the restהָאֲנָשִׁיםof the menאָמְרוּsaid,הַנִּיחוּLet be,לוֹhim,וְנִרְאֶהlet us seeאִם־יָבוֹאwhether will comeאֵלִיָּסEliasלְהוֹשִׁיעוֹ׃to save him.

    The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.

50. 50

    וְיֵשׁוּעַJesus,הוֹסִיףwhen he had againלִקְרֹאcriedבְּקוֹלwith a voice,גָּדוֹלloudוַתֵּצֵאyielded upרוּחוֹ׃the ghost.

    Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

51. 51

    וְהִנֵּהAnd, behold,נִקְרְעָהwas rentפָּרֹכֶתthe veil ofהַהֵיכׇלthe templeמִלְמַעְלָהfrom the topלְמַטָּהto the bottom;לִשְׁנַיִםin twoקְרָעִיםpieces,וַתִּרְעַשׁand did quake,הָאָרֶץthe earthוְהַסְּלָעִיםand the rocksהִתְבַּקָּעוּ׃rent;

    And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

52. 52

    וְהַקְּבָרִיםAnd the gravesנִפְתָּחוּwere opened;וְרַבִּיםand manyמִן־הַקְּדוֹשִׁיםbodies of the saintsיְשֵׁנֵיwhich slept inאַדְמַתthe ground ofעָפָרdustנֵעוֹרוּ׃arose,

    And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

53. 53

    וַיֵּצְאוּAnd came outמִן־הַקְּבָרִיםof the gravesאַחֲרֵיafterתְחִיָּתוֹhis resurrection,וַיָּבֹאוּand wentאֶל־הָעִירinto the city,הַקְּדוֹשָׁהholyוַיֵּרָאוּand appearedלָרַבִּים׃unto many.

    And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

54. 54

    וְשַׂר־הַמֵּאָהNow when the centurion,וְהָאֲנָשִׁיםand theyאֲשֶׁרthat wereאִתּוֹwith him,הַשֹׁמְרִיםwatchingאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesus,כִּרְאוֹתָםsawאֶת־הָרַעַשׁthe earthquake,וְאֶת־אֲשֶׁרand those things thatנִהְיְתָהwere done,נִבְהֲלוּthey fearedמְאֹדgreatly,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,אָכֵןTrulyזֶהthisהָיָהwasבֶן־אֱלֹהִים׃the Son of God.

    Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

55. 55

    וְשָׁםAnd thereנָשִׁיםwomenרַבּוֹתmanyאֲשֶׁרwhichהָלְכוּfollowedאַחֲרֵיafterיֵשׁוּעַJesusמִן־הַגָּלִילfrom Galilee,לְשׇׁרְתוֹministering unto him:וְהֵנָּהwereרֹאוֹתbeholdingמֵרָחוֹק׃afar off,

    And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:

56. 56

    וּבְתוֹכָןAmong which wasמִרְיָםMaryהַמַּגְדָּלִיתMagdalene,וּמִרְיָםand Maryאֵם־יַעֲקֹבthe mother of Jamesוְיוֹסֵיand Joses,וְאֵםand the mother ofבְּנֵיthe children ofזַבְדָּי׃Zebedee.

    Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.

57. 57

    וַיְהִיWhenבָעֶרֶבthe even was come,וַיָּבֹאthere cameאִישׁa manעָשִׁירrichמִן־הָרָמָתַיִםof Arimathaea,וּשְׁמוֹnamedיוֹסֵףJoseph,וְגַם־הוּאwho also himself wasמִתַּלְמִידֵיdisciple:יֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus'

    When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathæa, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:

58. 58

    וַיִּגַּשׁHe wentאֶל־פִּילָטוֹסto Pilate,לִשְׁאֹלand beggedאֶת־גְּוִיַּתthe body ofיֵשׁוּעַJesus.וַיְצַוThen commandedפִּילָטוֹסPilateוַתִּנָּתֶןto be delivered.לוֹ׃the body

    He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.

59. 59

    וַיִּקַּחAnd when had takenיוֹסֵףJosephאֶת־הַגְּוִיָּהthe body,וַיִּכְרֹךְhe wrappedאוֹתָהּitבְּסָדִיןin a linen cloth,טָהוֹר׃clean

    And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

60. 60

    וַיְשִׂימֶהָAnd laid itבַּקֶּבֶרin tomb,הֶחָדָשׁhis own newאֲשֶׁרwhichחָצַב־לוֹhe had hewnבַּסָּלַעin the rock:וַיָּגֶלand he rolledאֶבֶןa stoneגְּדוֹלָהgreatעַל־פֶּתַחto the door ofהַקֶּבֶרthe sepulchre,וַיֵּלֶךְand departedלוֹ׃his way.

    And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

61. 61

    וּמִרְיָםAnd there was MaryהַמַּגְדָּלִיתMagdalene,וּמִרְיָםand Maryהָאַחֶרֶתthe other,הָיוּwereיֹשְׁבוֹתsittingשָׁםthereמִמּוּלover againstהַקָּבֶר׃the sepulchre.

    And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

62. 62

    וַיְהִיNowמִמׇּחֳרַתthe next day,עֶרֶבthat followed the day ofהַשַּׁבָּתthe preparation,וַיִּקָּהֲלוּcame togetherרָאשֵׁיthe chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Phariseesאֶל־פִּילָטוֹס׃unto Pilate,

    Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,

63. 63

    וַיֹּאמְרוּSaying,אֲדֹנֵינוּSir,זָכַרְנוּwe rememberכִּיthatאָמַרsaid,הַמֵּסִיתthe deceiverהַהוּאthat,בְּעוֹדֶנּוּwhile he was yetחָיalive,מִקְצֵהAfterשְׁלֹשֶׁתthreeיָמִיםdaysקוֹםI will riseאָקוּם׃again.

    Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

64. 64

    לָכֵןthereforeצַוֵּה־נָאCommandוְיִסָּכֵרthat be made sureפִּיthe mouth ofהַקֶּבֶרthe sepulchreעַד־הַיּוֹםuntil the day,הַשְּׁלִישִׁיthirdפֶּן־יָבֹאוּlest comeתַלְמִידָיוhis disciplesבַּלַּיְלָהby night,וּגְנָבֻהוּand steal him away,וְאָמְרוּand sayאֶל־הָעָםunto the people,הִנֵּה־קָםHe is risenמִן־הַמֵּתִיםfrom the dead:וְהָיְתָהso shall beהַתַּרְמִיתthe errorהָאַחֲרוֹנָהlastרָעָהworseמִן־הָרִאשׁוֹנָה׃than the first.

    Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

65. 65

    וַיֹּאמֶרSaidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,פִּילָטוֹסPilateהִנֵּהYou haveלָכֶםunto youאַנְשֵׁיmen ofמִשְׁמָרthe watch:לְכוּgo your way,סִכְרוּהוּmake it as sureכַּאֲשֶׁרasיְדַעְתֶּם׃you can.

    Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.

66. 66

    וַיֵּלְכוּSo they went,וַיִּסְכְּרוּand made sureאֶת־פִּיthe mouth ofהַקֶּבֶרthe sepulchreוַיַּחְתְּמוּsealingאֶת־הָאָבֶןthe stone,וַיַּעֲמִידוּand settingעָלָיוtherebyאֶת־הַמִּשְׁמָר׃a watch.

    So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
