1. 1

   אָזThenיְדַבֵּרspakeיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֶל־הֲמוֹןto the multitudeהָעָםof the people,וְאֶל־תַּלְמִידָיוand to his disciples,לֵאמֹר׃saying,

   Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,

   הַסּוֹפְרִיםThe scribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand the Phariseesיֹשְׁבִיםsitעַל־כִּסֵּאin seat:מֹשֶׁה׃Moses'

   Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:

   לָכֵןthereforeכֹּלAllאֲשֶׁר־יֹאמְרוּwhatsoever they bidלָכֶםyouשִׁמְרוּobserve,וַעֲשׂוּthat observe and do;רַקbutהִשָּׁמְרוּdo not youמֵעֲשׂוֹתafterכְמַעֲשֵׂיהֶםtheir works:כִּיforאֹמְרִיםsayהֵםthey,וְאֵינָםand do notעֹשִׂים׃themselves.

   All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

   כִּיForאֹסְרִיםthey bindמַשְׂאֹתburdensכְּבֵדִיםheavyוְעֹמְסִיםand grievous to be borne, and lay themעַל־שְׁכֶםon shoulders;הָאֲנָשִׁיםmen'sוְהֵםbut they themselvesאֵינָםare notרוֹצִיםwillingלַהֲנִיעָםto move themאַףwithבְּאֶצְבָּעָם׃one of their fingers.

   For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

   וְעֹשִׂיםBut they doאֶת־כׇּל־מַעֲשֵׂיהֶםall their worksלְהֵרָאוֹתto be seenבָּהֶםtherebyלִבְנֵיofאָדָםmen:כִּיforמַרְחִיבִיםthey make broadאֶת־תְּפִלֵּיהֶםtheir phylacteries,וּמַאֲרִיכִיםand enlargeאֶת־צִיצִיּוֹתֵיהֶם׃the borders of their garments,

   But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

   וְאֹהֲבִיםAnd loveלְהָסֵבto reclineרִאשֹׁנִיםin the chief placesבַּסְּעוּדוֹתat feasts,וְלָשֶׁבֶתand to sitרִאשֹׁנִיםin the chief seatsבְּבָתֵּיinכְנֵסִיּוֹת׃the synagogues,

   And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

   וְשֶׁיִּשְׁאֲלוּAnd that they saluteבִשְׁלוֹמָםthemבַּשְׁוָקִיםin the markets,וְשֶׁיִּקְרְאוּand to be calledלָהֶםthemבְּנֵיofהָאָדָםmen,רַבִּיRabbi,רַבִּי׃Rabbi.

   And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

8. 8

   וְאַתֶּםBut youאַל־יִקָּרֵאbe not calledלָכֶםunto youרַבִּיRabbi:כִּיforאֶחָדoneהוּאisמוֹרֵיכֶםyour Master,הַמָּשִׁיחַeven Christ;וְאַתֶּםand youאַחִיםare brethren,כֻּלְּכֶם׃all

   But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

9. 9

   וְאַל־תִּקְרְאוּAnd callאָבfatherלְאִישׁno manמִכֶּםyourבָּאָרֶץupon the earth:כִּיforאֶחָדoneהוּאisאֲבִיכֶםyour Father,אֲשֶׁרwhich isבַּשָׁמָיִם׃in heaven.

   And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

10. 10

    גַּםNeitherאַל־יִקָּרֵאbe you calledלָכֶםunto youמוֹרֶהmasters:כִּיforמוֹרֶהMaster,אֶחָדoneלָכֶםis yourהַמָּשִׁיחַ׃even Christ.

    Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

11. 11

    וְהַגָּדוֹלBut he that is greatestבָּכֶםamong youיְהִיshall beלָכֶםyourלִמְשָׁרֵת׃servant.

    But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

12. 12

    כׇּל־הַמְרוֹמֵםAnd whosoever shall exaltאֶת־עַצְמוֹhimselfיִשָׁפֵלshall be abased;וְהַמַּשְׁפִּילand he that shall humbleאֶת־עַצְמוֹhimselfיְרוֹמָם׃shall be exalted.

    And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13. 13

    אֲבָלButאוֹיwoeלָכֶםunto you,הַסּוֹפְרִיםscribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees,הַחֲנֵפִיםhypocrites!כִּיforסֹגְרִיםshut upאַתֶּםyouמִפְּנֵיagainstהָאָדָםmen:אֵת־מַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהַשָׁמָיִםheavenהֵןforאַתֶּםyouלֹא־תָּבֹאוּneither go inבָהּyourselves,וְאֵתneitherהַבָּאִיםthem that are enteringלֹאnotתַנִּיחוּsuffer youלָבוֹא׃to go in.

    But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

14. 14

    וְאוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto you,הַסּוֹפְרִיםscribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees,הַחֲנֵפִיםhypocrites!כִּי־בֹלְעִיםfor devourאַתֶּםyouאֶת־בָּתֵּיhouses,הָאַלְמָנוֹתwidows'וּמַאֲרִיכִיםand make longבִּתְפִלָּהprayerלְמַרְאֵהfor a showעֵינָיִםof eyes:תַּחַתbecause ofזֹאתthis,מִשְׁפָּטthe judgmentגָּדוֹלgreat,יֶתֶרthe greaterמְאֹדexceedingly,תִּשָׁפֵטוּ׃shall you be judged.

    Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

15. 15

    אוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto you,הַסּוֹפְרִיםscribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees,הַחֲנֵפִיםhypocrites!כִּי־סוֹבֲבִיםfor compassאַתֶּםyouבַּיָּםseaוּבַיַּבָּשָׁהand landלְמַעַןtoגַּיֵּרmake a proselyte ofאִישׁmanאֶחָדone,וְכִיand whenיִתְגַּיַּרhe is made,תַּעֲשׂוּyou makeאוֹתוֹhimלְבֶן־גֵּיהִנֹּםthe child of hellכִּפְלַיִםtwofold moreכָּכֶם׃than yourselves.

    Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

16. 16

    אוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto you,מַנְהִיגִיםguides,עִוְרִיםyou blindהָאֹמְרִיםwhich say,הַנִּשְׁבָּעWhosoever shall swearבַּהֵיכׇלby the temple,אֵין־זֹאתit isמְאוּמָהnothing;וְהַנִּשְׁבָּעbut whosoever shall swearבִּזְהַבby the gold ofהַהֵיכׇלthe temple,חַיָּב׃he is a debtor!

    Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

17. 17

    כְּסִילִיםYou foolsוְעִוְרִיםand blind:כִּיforמַה־הוּאwhether isהַגָּדוֹלgreater,אִם־הַזָּהָבthe gold,אוֹorהַהֵיכׇלthe templeהַמְקַדֵּשׁthat sanctifiethאֶת־הַזָּהָב׃the gold?

    Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

18. 18

    וַאֲמַרְתֶּםAnd you say,הַנִּשְׁבָּעWhosoever shall swearבַּמִּזְבֵּחַby the altar,אֵיןit isמְאוּמָהnothing;וְהַנִּשְׁבָּעbut whosoever swearethבַּקָּרְבָּןby the giftאֲשֶׁר־עָלָיוthat is upon it,חַיָּב׃he is guilty.

    And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

19. 19

    כְּסִילִיםYou foolsוְעִוְרִיםand blind:כִּיforמַה־הוּאwhether isהַגָּדוֹלgreater,אִם־הַקָּרְבָּןthe gift,אוֹorהַמִּזְבֵּחַthe altarהַמְקַדֵּשׁthat sanctifiethאֶת־הַקָּרְבָּן׃the gift?

    Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

20. 20

    לָכֵןWhoso thereforeהַנִּשְׁבָּעshall swearבַּמִּזְבֵּחַby the altar,נִשְׁבַּעswearethבּוֹby it,וּבְכֹלand by all thingsאֲשֶׁרwhich areעָלָיו׃thereon.

    Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.

21. 21

    וְהַנִּשְׁבָּעAnd whoso shall swearבַּהֵיכׇלby the temple,נִשְׁבַּעswearethבּוֹby it,וּבַשׂוֹכֵןand by him that dwellethבּוֹ׃therein.

    And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.

22. 22

    וְהַנִּשְׁבָּעAnd he that shall swearבַּשָׁמָיִםby heaven,נִשְׁבַּעswearethבְּכִסֵּאby the throne ofאֱלֹהִיםGod,וּבַיֹּשֵׁבand by him that sittethעָלָיו׃thereon.

    And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

23. 23

    אוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto you,הַסּוֹפְרִיםscribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees,הַחֲנֵפִיםhypocrites!כִּיforמְעַשְּׂרִיםpay tithe ofאַתֶּםyouאֶת־הַמִּנְתָּאmintוְאֶת־הַשֶׁבֶתand aniseוְאֶת־הַכַּמֹּןand cummin,וַתַּנִּיחוּand have omittedאֵת־הַחֲמוּרוֹתthe weightier mattersבַּתּוֹרָהof the law,אֶת־הַמִּשְׁפָּטjudgment,וְאֶת־הַחֶסֶדmercy,וְאֶת־הָאֱמוּנָהand faith:וְהָיָהIt behovedלָכֶםyouלַעֲשׂוֹתto have done,אֶת־אֵלֶּהthese,וְלֹאand notלְהַנִּיחַto leaveגַּם־אֶת־אֵלֶּה׃the other undone.

    Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

24. 24

    מַנְהִיגִיםguides,עִוְרִיםYou blindהַמְסַנֲנִיםwhich strain atאֵת־הַיַּתּוּשׁa gnat,וּבֹלְעִיםand swallowאֵת־הַגָּמָל׃a camel.

    Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

25. 25

    אוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto you,הַסּוֹפְרִיםscribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees,הַחֲנֵפִיםhypocrites!כִּיforמְטַהֲרִיםmake cleanאַתֶּםyouאֶת־הַכּוֹסthe cupוְאֶת־הַקְּעָרָהand the platterמִחוּץwithout,וְתוֹכָןbut within theyמָלֵאare full ofגָּזֵלextortionוְגַרְגְּרָנוּת׃and excess.

    Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

26. 26

    פָּרוּשׁYou Pharisee,עִוֵּרblindטַהֵרcleanseבָּרִאשׁוֹנָהfirstאֶת־תּוֹךְthat which is withinהַכּוֹסthe cup and platter,לְמַעַןthatתִּטָּהֵרmay be cleanגַּם־מִחוּץ׃the outside of them also.

    Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

27. 27

    אוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto you,הַסּוֹפְרִיםscribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees,הַחֲנֵפִיםhypocrites!כִּי־דֹמִיםfor are likeאַתֶּםyouלַקְּבָרִיםunto sepulchres,הַמְסֻיָּדִיםwhitedהַנִּרְאִיםwhich indeed appearנָאִיםbeautifulמִחוּץoutward,וְתוֹכָםbut are withinמָלֵאfull ofעַצְמוֹתbones,מֵתִיםdead men'sוְכׇל־טֻמְאָה׃and of all uncleanness.

    Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

28. 28

    כָּכָהEven soצַדִּיקִיםrighteousאַתֶּםyou appearלְמַרְאֵהto the sightעֵינֵיof the eyes ofבְנֵיthe sons ofאָדָםmen,וְתוֹכֲכֶםbut within you areמָלֵאfull ofחֲנֻפָּהhypocrisyוָאָוֶן׃and iniquity.

    Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29. 29

    אוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto you,הַסּוֹפְרִיםscribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees,הַחֲנֵפִיםhypocrites!כִּיbecauseבּוֹנִיםbuildאַתֶּםyouקִבְרֵיthe tombs ofהַנְּבִיאִיםthe prophets,וַתְּיַפּוּand garnishאֶת־צִיּוּנֵיthe monuments ofקִבְרוֹתthe graves ofהַצַּדִּיקִים׃the righteous,

    Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

30. 30

    וַאֲמַרְתֶּםAnd say,אִם־הַיִינוּIf we had beenבִּימֵיin the days ofאֲבוֹתֵינוּour fathers,לֹא־הָיְתָהwould not have beenיָדֵנוּour handעִמָּהֶםpartakers with themלִשְׁפֹּךinדַּםthe blood ofהַנְּבִיאִים׃the prophets.

    And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

31. 31

    וְהִנֵּהWhereforeאַתֶּםyouמְעִידִיםbe witnessesבְּעַצְמְכֶםunto yourselves,שֶׁבָּנִיםthat the childrenאַתֶּםyou areלְרוֹצְחֵיof them which killedהַנְּבִיאִים׃the prophets.

    Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

32. 32

    וּבְכֵןAnd soמַלְּאוּfillאַתֶּםyou upסְאַתthe measure ofאֲבוֹתֵיכֶם׃your fathers.

    Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

33. 33

    נְחָשִׁיםYou serpents,יַלְדֵיyou generation ofצִפְעוֹנִיםvipers,אֵיךְhowתִּמָּלְטוּcan you escapeמִדִּיןthe damnation ofגֵּיהִנֹּם׃hell?

    Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

34. 34

    לָכֵןWherefore,הִנְנִיbehold, Iשֹׁלֵחַsendלָכֶםunto youנְבִיאִיםprophets,וַחֲכָמִיםand wise men,וְסוֹפְרִיםand scribes:וּמֵהֶםand some of themתַּהַרְגוּyou shall killוְתִצְלְבוּand crucify;וּמֵהֶםand some of themתַּכּוּshall you smiteבַשּׁוֹטִיםwith scourgesבִּכְנֵסִיּוֹתֵיכֶםin your synagogues,וְתִרְדְּפוּםand persecute themמֵעִירfrom cityלָעִיר׃to city:

    Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

35. 35

    לְמַעַןThatיָבֹאmay comeעֲלֵיכֶםupon youכׇּל־דָּםall bloodנָקִיthe righteousהַנִּשְׁפָּךְshedבָּאָרֶץupon the earth,מִדַּם־הֶבֶלfrom the blood of Abelהַצַּדִּיקrighteousעַד־דַּםunto the blood ofזְכַרְיָהZachariasבֶן־בֶּרֶכְיָהson of Barachias,אֲשֶׁרwhomרְצַחְתֶּםyou slewאוֹתוֹhimבֵּיןbetweenהַהֵיכׇלthe templeוְלַמִּזְבֵּחַ׃and the altar.

    That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

36. 36

    אָמֵןVerilyאֹמֵרsayאֲנִיIלָכֶםunto you,בֹּאsurelyיָבֹאshall comeכׇּל־אֵלֶּהAll these thingsעַל־הַדּוֹרupon generation.הַזֶּה׃this

    Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

37. 37

    יְרוּשָׁלַיִםO Jerusalem,יְרוּשָׁלַיִםJerusalem,הַהֹרֶגֶתyou that killestאֶת־הַנְּבִיאִיםthe prophets,וְהַסֹּקֶלֶתand stonestאֶת־הַשְׁלוּחִיםthem which are sentאֵלֶיהָunto you,כַּמַּהhow manyפְּעָמִיםtimesחָפַצְתִּיwould I haveלְקַבֵּץgathered togetherאֶת־בָּנַיִךְyour children,כַּתַּרְנְגֹלֶתeven as a henהַמְּקַבֶּצֶתgatherethאֶת־אֶפְרֹחֶיהָher chickensתַּחַתunderכְּנָפֶיהָher wings,וְלֹאandאֲבִיתֶם׃you would not!

    O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

38. 38

    הִנֵּהBehold,בֵיתְכֶםyour houseיֵעָזֵבis leftלָכֶםunto youשָׁמֵם׃desolate.

    Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

39. 39

    כִּיForאֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,מֵעַתָּהhenceforth,לֹאYou shall notתִרְאוּנִיsee meעַדtillאֲשֶׁרthatתֹּאמְרוּyou shall say,בָּרוּךְBlessed isהַבָּאhe that comethבְּשֵׁם־יְהוָֹה׃in the name of the Lord.

    For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
