1. 1

   בָּעֵתAtהַהִיאthat timeשָׁמַעheardהוֹרְדוֹסHerodשַׂר־רֹבַעthe tetrarch ofהַמְּדִינָהthe provinceאֵת־שֵׁמַעof the fame ofיֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus,

   At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,

2. 2

   וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֶל־נְעָרָיוunto his servants,זֶהThisהוּאisיוֹחָנָןJohnהַמַּטְבִּילthe Baptist;אֲשֶׁרwhoנֵעוֹרis risenמִן־הַמֵּתִיםfrom the dead;עַל־כֵּןand thereforeהַכֹּחוֹתmighty worksפֹּעֲלִיםdo shew forth themselvesבּוֹ׃in him.

   And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

   כִּיForהוֹרְדוֹסHerodתָּפַשׂhad laid holdאֶת־יוֹחָנָןon John,וַיַּאַסְרֵהוּand bound him,וַיְשִׂימֵהוּand put himבְּבֵיתinהַסֹּהַרprisonבִּגְלַלfor sake,הוֹרוֹדְיָהHerodias'אֵשֶׁתwife.פִילִפּוֹסPhilip'sאָחִיו׃his brother

   For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.

   כִּיForאָמַרsaidיוֹחָנָןJohnאֵלָיוunto him,אֲסוּרָהforbiddenהִיאis sheלָךְ׃unto you.

   For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

5. 5

   וַיְבַקֵּשׁAnd when he wouldלְהׇרְגוֹhave put him to death,וַיִּירָאhe fearedאֶת־הֶהָמוֹןthe multitude,כִּיbecauseלְנָבִיאas a prophet.חֲשָׁבֻהוּ׃they counted him

   And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

   וַיְהִיBut whenבְּיוֹםon the day ofהֻלֶּדֶתthe birth ofהוֹרְדוֹסHerod'sוַתְּרַקֵּדwas kept, dancedבַּת־הוֹרוֹדְיָהthe daughter of Herodiasבְּתוֹכָםbefore them,וַתִּיטַבand pleasedבְּעֵינֵיin the eyes ofהוֹרְדוֹס׃Herod.

   But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

   וַיִּשָּׁבַעWhereupon he promised with an oathלָהּunto herוַיֹּאמַרand said,מַה־תִּשְׁאַלwhatsoever you shall askנַפְשֵׁךְof your soul,וְאֶתֵּןI will giveלָךְ׃you.

   Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.

8. 8

   וְאִמָּהּAnd her motherשָׂמָהputאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםthe wordsבְּפִיהָin her mouth,וַתִּשְׁאַלand she asked,לֵאמֹרsaying,תְּנָה־לִּיGive meפֹהhereבַּקְּעָרָהin a charger.אֶת־רֹאשׁheadיוֹחָנָןJohnהַמַּטְבִּיל׃Baptist's

   And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.

9. 9

   וַיֵּצֶרAnd was sorry:לַמֶּלֶךְthe kingאַךְneverthelessבַּעֲבוּרfor sake,הַשְׁבוּעָהthe oath'sוְהַמְסֻבִּיםand them which satעִמּוֹwith him at meat,צִוָּהhe commanded itלָתֵתto be givenלָהּ׃her.

   And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

10. 10

    וַיִּשְׁלַחAnd he sent,וַיִּשָּׂאand took offאֶת־רֹאשׁthe head ofיוֹחָנָןJohnמֵעָלָיוfrom off himבְּבֵיתinהַסֹּהַר׃the prison.

    And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

11. 11

    וַיָּבִיאוּAnd was broughtאֶת־רֹאשׁוֹhis headבַּקְּעָרָהin a charger,וַיִּתְּנוּand givenבִידֵיinto the hands ofהַנַּעֲרָהthe damsel:וַתְּבִיאֵהוּand she brought itאֶל־אִמָּהּ׃to her mother.

    And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

12. 12

    וַיִּגְּשׁוּAnd came,תַּלְמִידָיוhis disciplesוַיִּשְׂאוּand took upאֶת־גְּוִיָּתוֹthe body,וַיִּקְבְּרוּהָand buried it,וַיֵּלְכוּand wentוַיַּגִּידוּand toldלְיֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus.

    And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

13. 13

    וַיְהִיWhenכְּשָׁמְעוֹheardאֶת־זֹאתof it,וַיָּסַרhe departedמִשָּׁםthenceבׇּאֳנִיָּהby shipאֶל־מְקוֹםinto a placeחׇרְבָּהdesertוְאֵין־אִישׁand no manאִתּוֹwith him:וַיִּשְׁמְעוּand when had heard thereof,הֲמוֹןthe multitude ofהָעָםthe peopleוַיֵּלְכוּthey followedאַחֲרָיוhimבְּרַגְלֵיהֶםon footמִן־הֶעָרִים׃out of the cities.

    When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

14. 14

    וַיֵּצֵאAnd went forth,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיַּרְאand sawהֲמוֹןa multitude,עַם־רָבgreatוַיֶּהֱמוּand yearnedמֵעָיוhis bowelsלָהֶםtoward them,וַיְרַפֵּאand he healedאֶת־הַחַלָּשִׁיםthe sickאֲשֶׁרwhich wereבָּהֶם׃among them.

    And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

15. 15

    וַיְהִיAnd whenלְעֵתit wasעֶרֶבevening,וַיִּגְּשׁוּcameאֵלָיוto him,תַּלְמִידָיוhis disciplesוַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,הַמָּקוֹםplace,חָרֵבThis is a desertוְגַם־נָטָהand is now past;הַיּוֹםthe timeשַׁלְּחָהsend away,אֶת־הֲמוֹןthe multitudeהָעָםof the people,וְיֵלְכוּthat they may goאֶל־הַכְּפָרִיםinto the villages,לִקְנוֹתand buyלָהֶםthemselvesאֹכֶל׃victuals.

    And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

16. 16

    וַיֹּאמֶרBut saidאֲלֵיהֶםJesus unto them,אֵינָםThey have noצְרִיכִיםneedלָלֶכֶתto depart;תְּנוּ־אַתֶּםgive youלָהֶםthemלֶאֱכֹל׃to eat.

    But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

17. 17

    וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they sayאֵלָיוunto him,אֵין־לָנוּWe haveפֹהhereכִּיbutאִםonlyחֲמֵשֶׁתfiveכִּכְּרוֹת־לֶחֶםloaves,וּשְׁנֵיand twoדָגִים׃fishes.

    And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

18. 18

    וַיֹּאמַרHe said,הֲבִיאוּםBring themאֵלַיto me.הֵנָּה׃hither

    He said, Bring them hither to me.

19. 19

    וַיְצַוAnd he commandedאֶת־הָעָםthe multitudeלָשֶׁבֶתto sit downעַל־הַדֶּשֶׁאon the grass,וַיִּקַּחand tookאֶת־חֲמֵשֶׁתthe fiveכִּכְּרוֹת־הַלֶּחֶםloaves,וְאֶת־שְׁנֵיand the twoהַדָּגִיםfishes,וַיִּשָּׂאand lifting upעֵינָיוhis eyesהַשָּׁמַיְמָהto heaven,וַיְבָרֶךְhe blessed,וַיִּפְרֹסand brake,וַיִּתֵּןand gaveאֶת־הַלֶּחֶםthe loavesלַתַּלְמִידִיםto his disciples,וְהַתַּלְמִידִיםand the disciplesנָתְנוּgaveלָעָם׃to the multitude.

    And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

20. 20

    וַיֹּאכְלוּAnd they did eatכֻלָּםall,וַיִּשְׂבָּעוּand were filled:וַיִּשְׂאוּand they took upמִן־הַפְּתוֹתִיםof the fragmentsהַנּוֹתָרִיםthat remainedשְׁנֵים־עָשָׂרtwelveסַלִּיםbasketsמְלֵאִים׃full.

    And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

21. 21

    וְהָאֹכְלִיםAnd they that had eatenכַּחֲמֵשֶׁתwere about fiveאֲלָפִיםthousandאִישׁmen,מִלְּבַדbesideהַנָּשִׁיםwomenוְהַטָּף׃and children.

    And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

22. 22

    וַיָּאֶץAnd straightway constrainedיֵשׁוּעַJesusבְּתַלְמִידָיוhis disciplesלָרֶדֶתto getבׇּאֳנִיָּהinto a ship,לַעֲבֹרand to goלְפָנָיוbefore himאֶל־עֵבֶרunto the other sideהַיָּםof the sea,עַדwhileאֲשֶׁר־יְשַׁלַּחhe sent away.אֶת־הָעָם׃the multitudes

    And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

23. 23

    וַיְשַׁלַּחAnd when he had sentאֶת־הָעָםthe multitudes away,וַיַּעַלhe went upהָהָרָהinto a mountainבָּדָדapartלְהִתְפַּלֵּלto pray:וַיְהִי־עֶרֶבand when the evening was come,וְהוּאheלְבַדּוֹwas aloneשָׁמָּה׃there.

    And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

24. 24

    וְהׇאֳנִיָּהBut the shipבָאָהwasעַדnow inחֲצִיthe midst ofהַיָּםthe sea,וְהַגַּלִּיםand the wavesיִטְרְפֻהָtossed it:כִּיforהָרוּחַthe windלְנֶגְדָּהּ׃was contrary.

    But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

25. 25

    וַיְהִיAndבְּאַשְׁמֹרֶתin the watchהָרְבִיעִיתfourthוַיָּבֹאwentאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוְהוּאand heמְהַלֵּךְwalkingעַל־פְּנֵיonהַיָּם׃the sea.

    And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

26. 26

    וְהַתַּלְמִידִיםAnd when the disciplesרָאוּsawאוֹתוֹhimמְהַלֵּךְwalkingעַל־פְּנֵיonהַיָּםthe sea,וַיִּבָּהֲלוּthey were troubled,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,מַרְאֵה־רוּחַA spiritהוּאit is;וַיִּצְעֲקוּand they cried outמִפָּחַד׃for fear.

    And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

27. 27

    וַיְמַהֵרBut straightwayיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיְדַבֵּרspakeאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,לֵאמֹרsaying,חִזְקוּBe of good cheer;כִּי־אֲנִיfor Iהוּאam he;אַל־תִּירָאוּ׃be not afraid.

    But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28. 28

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeredפֶּטְרוֹסPeterוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,אִם־אַתָּהifהוּאit be you,אֲדֹנִיLord,צַוֵּה־נָאbidוְאָבֹאme comeאֵלֶיךָunto youעַל־הַמָּיִם׃on the water.

    And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

29. 29

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he said,בּוֹאCome.וַיֵּרֶדAnd when was come downפֶּטְרוֹסPeterמִן־הׇאֳנִיָּהout of the ship,וַיְהַלֵּךְhe walkedעַל־פְּנֵיonהַמַּיִםthe water,לָבוֹאto goאֶל־יֵשׁוּעַ׃to Jesus.

    And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

30. 30

    וַיְהִיButכִּרְאֹתוֹwhen he sawאֶת־הָרוּחַthe windכִּיthatחֲזָקָהboisterous,הִיאit was,וַיִּירָאhe was afraid;וַיָּחֶלand beginningלִטְבֹּעַto sink,וַיִּצְעַקhe cried,וַיֹּאמַרsaying,אֲדֹנִיLord,הוֹשִׁיעֵנִי׃save me.

    But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

31. 31

    וַיְמַהֵרAnd immediatelyיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיִּשְׁלַחstretched forthאֶת־יָדוֹhis hand,וַיַּחֲזֶק־בּוֹand caught him,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,קְטֹןO you of littleאֱמוּנָהfaith,מַה־לְּךָwhereforeכִּיthatחָלַקdid doubtלִבֶּךָ׃your heart?

    And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

32. 32

    הֵםAnd when theyעָלוּwere comeאֶל־הׇאֳנִיָּהinto the ship,וְהָרוּחַthe windשָׁכָכָה׃ceased.

    And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

33. 33

    וְאַנְשֵׁיThen they that wereהׇאֳנִיָּהin the shipנִגְּשׁוּcameוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ־לוֹand worshiped him,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,אֲבָלOf a truthבֶּן־אֱלֹהִיםthe Son of God.אָתָּה׃you are

    Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

34. 34

    וַיַּעַבְרוּAnd when they were gone overאֶת־הַיָּםthe sea,וַיָּבֹאוּthey cameאַרְצָהinto the land ofגִּנֵּיסַר׃Gennesaret.

    And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

35. 35

    וַיַּכִּירוּAnd when had knowledge ofאֹתוֹhim,אַנְשֵׁיthe men ofהַמָּקוֹםplaceהַהוּאthatוַיִּשְׁלְחוּthey sent outאֶל־כׇּל־סְבִיבוֹתֵיהֶםinto all that country round about,וַיָּבִיאוּand broughtאֵלָיוunto himאֵת־כׇּל־הַחוֹלִים׃all that were diseased;

    And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

36. 36

    וַיְבַקְשׁוּAnd besoughtמִמֶּנּוּhimרַקthat they might onlyלִנְגֹּעַtouchבִּכְנַףthe hem ofבִּגְדוֹhis garment:וְכׇל־הַנֹּגְעִיםand as many as touchedנוֹשָׁעוּ׃were made perfectly whole.

    And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
