1. 1

   בָּעֵתAt timeהַהִיאthatעָבַרwentיֵשׁוּעַJesusבֵּיןthroughהַקָּמָהthe cornבְּיוֹםon the day;הַשַּׁבָּתsabbathוְתַלְמִידָיוand his disciplesרָעֵבוּwere an hungred,וַיָּחֵלּוּand beganלִקְטֹףto pluckמְלִילֹתthe ears of corn,וַיֹּאכֵלוּ׃and to eat.

   At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.

   וַיִּרְאוּBut when saw it,הַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Phariseesוַיֹּאמְרוּthey saidלוֹunto him,הִנֵּהBehold,תַּלְמִידֶיךָyour disciplesעֹשִׂיםdoאֵת־אֲשֶׁרthat whichלֹאnotיֵעָשֶׂהis lawful to doבַּשַּׁבָּת׃upon the sabbath day.

   But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.

   וַיֹּאמֶרBut he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הֲלֹאHave you notקְרָאתֶםreadאֵת־אֲשֶׁרwhatעָשָׂהdid,דָוִדDavidכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenרָעֵבwas an hungred,הוּאheוַאֲנָשָׁיו׃and they that were with him;

   But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;

   אֲשֶׁרHowבָּאhe enteredאֶל־בֵּיתinto the house ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,וַיֹּאכַלand did eatאֶת־לֶחֶםthe bread ofהַפָּנִיםthe presence,אֲשֶׁרwhichאֵינֶנּוּwas notמֻתָּרlawfulלוֹfor himוְלַאֲנָשָׁיוneither for them which were with him,לֶאֱכֹלto eat,רַקbut onlyלַכֹּהֲנִיםfor the priestsלְבַדָּם׃alone?

   How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?

   וַהֲלֹאOr have you notקְרָאתֶםreadבַּתּוֹרָהin the law,כִּיhow thatבַשַׁבָּתוֹתon the sabbath daysיְחַלְּלוּprofaneהַכֹּהֲנִיםthe priestsאֶת־הַשַּׁבָּתthe sabbath,בַּמִּקְדָּשׁin the templeוְאֵיןand there is notלָהֶםunto themעָוֹן׃iniquity?

   Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

6. 6

   וַאֲנִיBut Iאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,כִּיThatיֶשׁ־פֹּהin this place isגָּדוֹלone greaterמִן־הַמִּקְדָּשׁ׃than the temple.

   But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.

7. 7

   וְלוּBut ifיְדַעְתֶּםyou had knownמַה־הוּאwhatשֶׁנֶּאֱמַרthis meaneth,חֶסֶדmercy,חָפַצְתִּיI will haveוְלֹאand notזָבַחsacrifice,לֹאnotהִרְשַׁעְתֶּםyou would have condemnedאֵת־הַנְּקִיִּם׃the guiltless.

   But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

8. 8

   כִּיForבֶּן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manהוּאisגַּם־אֲדוֹןLord even ofהַשַּׁבָּת׃the sabbath day.

   For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

9. 9

   וַיַּעֲבֹרAnd when he was departedמִשָּׁםthence,אֶל־בֵּיתhe went intoהַכְּנֵסֶתsynagogue:שֶׁלָּהֶם׃their

   And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:

10. 10

    וְהִנֵּה־שָׁםAnd, behold, there wasאִישׁa manוְיָדוֹwhich had his handיְבֵשָׁהwithered.וַיִּשְׁאָלוּהוּAnd they asked him,הֲמֻתָּרsaying, Is it lawfulלִרְפֹּאto healבַּשַּׁבָּתon the sabbath days?לְמַעַןthatיִמְצְאוּthey might findעָלָיוagainst himעֲלִילֹתoccasions ofדְּבָרִים׃accusation.

    And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.

11. 11

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הַיֵּשׁWhat shall there beבָּכֶםamong you,אָדָםmanאֲשֶׁר־לוֹthat shall haveכֶּבֶשׂsheep,אֶחָדoneוְנָפַלand if it fallבְּבוֹרinto a pitבַּשַּׁבָּתon the sabbath day,וְלֹא־יַחֲזִיקwill he not lay holdבּוֹon it,וְיַעֲלֶנּוּ׃and lift it out?

    And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

12. 12

    וּמַה־יָּקָרHow much then is betterאָדָםa manמִן־הַכֶּבֶשׂthan a sheep?לָכֵןWhereforeמֻתָּרit is lawfulלַעֲשׂוֹתto doטוֹבָהwellבַּשַּׁבָּת׃on the sabbath days.

    How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

13. 13

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen saith heאֶל־הָאִישׁto the man,פְּשֹׁטStretch forthאֶת־יָדֶךָyour hand.וַיִּפְשֹׁטAnd he stretched forthאֹתָהּit;וַתֵּרָפֵאand it was restoredוַתָּשׇׁבwhole,כְּיָדוֹlike asהָאַחֶרֶת׃the other.

    Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.

14. 14

    וַיֵּצְאוּThen went out,הַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Phariseesוַיִּתְיָעֲצוּand held a councilעָלָיוagainst him,לְאַבְּדוֹ׃how they might destroy him.

    Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

15. 15

    וַיֵּדַעBut when knew it,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיָּסַרhe withdrew himselfמִשָּׁםfrom thence:וַיֵּלֶךְand followedאַחֲרָיוhim,הֲמוֹןa multitudeעַםof peopleרָבgreatוַיִּרְפָּאֵםand he healed themכֻּלָּם׃all;

    But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

16. 16

    וַיִּגְעַרAnd chargedבָּםthemוַיְצַוand commandedעֲלֵיהֶםthem,שֶׁלּאthat they should notיְגַלֻּהוּ׃make him known:

    And charged them that they should not make him known:

17. 17

    לְמַלֹּאתThat it might be fulfilledאֵת־אֲשֶׁרwhichדִּבֶּרwas spokenיְשַׁעְיָהוּby Esaiasהַנָּבִיאthe prophet,לֵאמֹר׃saying,

    That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

18. 18

    הֵןBeholdעַבְדִּיmy servant,בָּחַרְתִּיwhom I have chosenבוֹin him;יְדִידִיmy beloved,רָצְתָהis well pleased:נַפְשִׁיin whom my soulנָתַתִּיI will putרוּחִיmy Spiritעָלָיוupon him,וּמִשְׁפָּטand judgmentלַגּוֹיִםto the Gentiles.יוֹצִיא׃and he shall shew

    Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

19. 19

    לֹאnotיִצְעַקHe shall strive,וְלֹאnorיִשָּׂאcry;וְלֹאneitherיַשְׁמִיעַshall any man hearבַּחוּץin the streets.קוֹלוֹ׃his voice

    He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.

20. 20

    קָנֶהA reedרָצוּץbruisedלֹאnot,יִשְׁבּוֹרshall he breakוּפִשְׁתָּהand flaxכֵהָהsmokingלֹאnot,יְכַבֶּנָּהshall he quenchעַד־יוֹצִיאtill he send forthלָנֶצַחunto victory.מִשְׁפָּט׃judgment

    A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.

21. 21

    וְלִשְׁמוֹAnd in his nameגּוֹיִםshall the Gentilesיְיַחֵלוּ׃trust.

    And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

22. 22

    אָזThenהוּבָאwas broughtאֵלָיוunto himאִישׁoneעִוֵּרblind,וְאִלֵּםand dumb,אֲשֶׁרwho wasאֲחָזוֹpossessed withשֵׁדa devil,וַיִּרְפָּאֵהוּand he healed him,וַיְדַבֵּרinsomuch that both spakeהָעִוֵּרthe blindוְהָאִלֵּםand dumb,וְגַםandרָאָה׃saw.

    Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.

23. 23

    וַיִּתְמְהוּAnd were amazed,כׇּל־הֲמוֹןall the multitudeהָעָםof the people,וַיֹּאמְרוּand said,הֲכִיIs notזֶהthisבֶן־דָּוִד׃the son of David?

    And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

24. 24

    וַיִּשְׁמְעוּBut when heard it,הַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Phariseesוַיֹּאמְרוּthey said,אֵיןdoth notזֶהThis fellowמְגָרֵשׁcast outאֶת־הַשֵּׁדִיםdevils,כִּיbutאִם־עַל־יְדֵיbyבַעַל־זְבוּלBeelzebubשַׂרthe prince ofהַשֵּׁדִים׃the devils.

    But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

25. 25

    וְיֵשׁוּעַAnd Jesusיָדַעknewאֶת־מַחְשְׁבוֹתָםtheir thoughts,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,כׇּל־מַמְלָכָהEvery kingdomהַנֶּחֱלָקָהdividedעַל־עַצְמָהּagainst itselfתֵּחָרֵבis brought to desolation;וְכׇל־עִירand every cityוָבַיִתor houseהַנֶּחֱלָקִיםdividedעַל־עַצְמָםagainst itselfלֹאnotיִכּוֹנוּ׃shall stand:

    And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:

26. 26

    וְהַשָּׂטָןAnd if Satanאִם־יְגָרֵשׁcast outאֶת־הַשָּׂטָןSatan,נֶחֱלָקhe is dividedעַל־עַצְמוֹagainst himself;וְאֵיכָכָהhowתִכּוֹןshall then stand?מַמְלַכְתּוֹ׃his kingdom

    And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?

27. 27

    וְאִם־אֲנִיAnd if Iמְגָרֵשׁcast outאֶת־הַשֵּׁדִיםdevils,בְּבַעַל־זְבוּלby Beelzebubבְּנֵיכֶםyour childrenבְּמִיby whomיְגַרֲשׁוּdo castאֹתָםthem out?עַל־כֵּןthereforeהֵמָּהtheyיִהְיוּshall beשֹׁפְטֵיכֶם׃your judges.

    And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.

28. 28

    וְאִםBut ifבְּרוּחַby the Spirit ofאֱלֹהִיםGod,אֲנִיIמְגָרֵשׁcast outאֶת־הַשֵּׁדִיםdevilsהִנֵּהthenהִגִּיעָהis comeאֲלֵיכֶםunto you.מַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God

    But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

29. 29

    אוֹOr elseאֵיךְhowיוּכַלcanאִישׁoneלָבוֹאenter intoלְבֵיתhouse,הַגִּבּוֹרa strong man'sוְלִגְזֹלand spoilאֶת־כֵּלָיוhis goods,אִם־לֹאexceptיֶאֱסֹרhe bindבָּרִאשׁוֹנָהfirstאֶת־הַגִּבּוֹרthe strong man?וְאַחַרand thenיִשְׁסֶהhe will spoilאֶת־בֵּיתוֹ׃his house.

    Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

30. 30

    כׇּלHeאֲשֶׁרthatאֵינֶנּוּis notאִתִּיwith meהוּאheלְנֶגְדִּיis against me;וַאֲשֶׁרand he thatאֵינֶנּוּnotמְכַנֵּסgatherethאִתִּיwith meהוּאheמְפַזֵּר׃scattereth abroad.

    He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

31. 31

    עַל־כֵּןWhereforeאֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,כׇּל־חֵטְאAll manner of sinוְגִדּוּףand blasphemyיִסָּלַחshall be forgivenלָאָדָםunto men:אַךְ־גִּדּוּףbut the blasphemy againstרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁthe Holy Ghostלֹאnotיִסָּלַחshall be forgivenלָאָדָם׃unto men.

    Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

32. 32

    וְכֹלAnd whosoeverאֲשֶׁרwhoיְדַבֵּרspeakethדְּבַרa wordחֶרְפָּהagainstבְּבֶן־הָאָדָםthe Son of man,יִסָּלַחit shall be forgivenלוֹhim:וְהַמְחָרֵףbut whosoever speaketh againstאֶת־רוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁthe Holy Ghost,לֹאnotיִסָּלַחit shall be forgivenלוֹhim,לֹא־בָעוֹלָםneither in world,הַזֶּהthisוְלֹא־לָעוֹלָםneither in the worldהַבָּא׃to come.

    And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

33. 33

    אִמְרוּEither makeלָעֵץthe treeטוֹבgood,וּלְפִרְיוֹand his fruitטוֹבgood;אוֹor elseאִמְרוּmakeלָעֵץthe treeנִשְׁחָתcorrupt,וּלְפִרְיוֹand his fruitנִשְׁחָתcorrupt:כִּיforבְּפִרְיוֹby his fruit.נִכַּרis knownהָעֵץ׃the tree

    Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.

34. 34

    יַלְדֵיO generation ofצִפְעוֹנִיםvipers,אֵיכָהhowתוּכְלוּcan you,לְדַבֵּרspeakטוֹבgood things?וְאַתֶּםbeingרָעִיםevil,כִּי־מִשִׁפְעַתfor out of the abundance ofהַלֵּבthe heartיְדַבֵּרspeaketh.הַפֶּה׃the mouth

    O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

35. 35

    אִישׁmanטוֹבA goodמֵאוֹצַרout of the treasure ofלִבּוֹhis heart,הַטּוֹבgoodמוֹצִיאbringeth forthאֶת־הַטּוֹבgood things:וְאִישׁand anרָעevil manמֵאוֹצַרout of the treasureהָרַעevilמוֹצִיאbringeth forthרָע׃evil things.

    A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

36. 36

    וַאֲנִיBut Iאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,כׇּל־מִלָּהThat every wordבְטֵלָהidleאֲשֶׁרthatיְדַבְּרוּshall speak,בְּנֵיthe sons ofהָאָדָםmenיִתְּנוּthey shall giveעָלֶיהָthereofחֶשְׁבּוֹןaccountבְּיוֹםin the day ofהַדִּין׃judgment.

    But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37. 37

    כִּיForמִדְּבָרֶיךָby your wordsתִּצָּדֵקyou shall be justified,וּמִדְּבָרֶיךָand by your wordsתְּחֻיָּב׃you shall be condemned.

    For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

38. 38

    וַיַּעֲנוּThen answeredאֲנָשִׁיםcertainמִן־הַסּוֹפְרִיםof the scribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand of the Pharisees,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,רַבִּיMaster,חָפַצְנוּwe wouldלִרְאוֹתseeאוֹתa signעַל־יָדֶךָ׃from you.

    Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.

39. 39

    וַיַּעַןBut he answeredוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,דּוֹרgenerationרָעAn evilוּמְנָאֵףand adulterousמְבַקֶּשׁ־לוֹseeketh afterאוֹתa sign;וְאוֹתand signלֹאnoיִנָּתֶן־לוֹthere shall be given to it,בִּלְתִּיbutאִם־אוֹתthe sign ofיוֹנָהJonahהַנָּבִיא׃the prophet:

    But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:

40. 40

    כִּיForכַּאֲשֶׁרasהָיָהwasיוֹנָהJonahבִּמְעֵיin bellyהַדָּגthe whale'sשְׁלֹשָׁהthreeיָמִיםdaysוּשְׁלֹשָׁהand threeלֵילוֹתnights;כֵּןsoיִהְיֶהshall beבֶן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manבְּלֵבin the heart ofהָאֲדָמָהthe earthשְׁלֹשָׁהthreeיָמִיםdaysוּשְׁלֹשָׁהand threeלֵילוֹת׃nights.

    For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

41. 41

    אַנְשֵׁיThe men ofנִינְוֵהNinevehיַעַמְדוּshall riseלְמִשְׁפַּטin judgmentעִם־הַדּוֹרwith generation,הַזֶּהthisוְיַרְשִׁיעוּהוּand shall condemn it:כִּיbecauseהֵםtheyשָׁבוּrepentedבִּקְרִיאַתat the preaching ofיוֹנָהJonah;וְהִנֵּה־פֹהand, behold, here isגָּדוֹלa greaterמִיּוֹנָה׃than Jonah.

    The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

42. 42

    מַלְכַּתThe queen ofתֵּימָןthe southתַּעֲמֹדshall rise upלְמִשְׁפַּטin the judgmentעִם־הַדּוֹרwith generation,הַזֶּהthisוְתַרְשִׁיעֶנּוּand shall condemn it:כִּיforבָאָהshe cameמִקְצוֹתfrom the uttermost parts ofהָאָרֶץthe earthלִשְׁמֹעַto hearאֶת־חׇכְמַתthe wisdom ofשְׁלֹמֹהSolomon;וְהִנֵּה־פֹהand, behold, here isגָּדוֹלa greaterמִשְׁלֹמֹה׃than Solomon.

    The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

43. 43

    וְהָרוּחַWhen the spiritהַטְּמֵאָהuncleanאַחֲרֵיisצֵאתָהּgone outמִן־הָאָדָםof a man,תְּשֹׁטֵטhe walkethבִּמְקֹמוֹתthrough places,צִיָּהdryלְבַקֶּשׁ־לָהּseekingמָנוֹחַrest,וְלֹאandתִמְצָא׃findeth none.

    When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

44. 44

    אָזThenתֹּאמַרhe saith,אָשׁוּבָהI will returnאֶל־בֵּיתִיinto my houseאֲשֶׁרwhenceיָצָאתִיI came outמִשָּׁםfrom thence;וּבָאָהand when he is come,וּמָצְאָהhe findethאֹתוֹitמְפֻנֶּהempty,וּמְטֻאטָאswept,וּמְהֻדָּר׃and garnished.

    Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.

45. 45

    וְאַחַרThenתֵּלֵךְgoeth he,וְלָקְחָהand takethעִמָּהּwith himselfשֶׁבַעsevenרוּחוֹתspiritsאֲחֵרוֹתotherרָעוֹתmore wickedמִמֶּנָּהthan himself,וּבָאוּand they enter inוְשָׁכְנוּand dwellשָׁםthere:וְהָיְתָהand isאַחֲרִיתthe last state ofהָאָדָםmanהַהוּאthatרָעָהworseמֵרֵאשִׁיתוֹthan the first.כֵּןEven soיִהְיֶהshall it beגַּם־לַדּוֹרalso unto generation.הָרָעwickedהַזֶּה׃this

    Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

46. 46

    עוֹדֶנּוּWhile he yetמְדַבֵּרtalkedאֶל־הֲמוֹןto the multitudeהָעָםof the people,וְהִנֵּהbehold,אִמּוֹhis motherוְאֶחָיוand his brethrenעָמְדוּstoodבַּחוּץwithout,וְהֵםand they wereמְבַקְשִׁיםdesiringלְדַבֵּרto speakאִתּוֹ׃with him.

    While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.

47. 47

    וַיֻּגַּדThen one saidאֵלָיוunto him,לֵאמֹרsaying,הִנֵּהBehold,אִמְּךyour motherוְאַחֶיךָand your brethrenעֹמְדִיםstandבַּחוּץwithout,וּמְבַקְשִׁיםdesiringלְדַבֵּרto speakאִתָּךְ׃with you.

    Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.

48. 48

    וַיַּעַןBut he answeredוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֶל־הָאִישׁunto the manהַמַּגִּידthat toldלוֹhim,מִיWhoהִיאisאִמִּיmy mother?וּמִיand whoהֵםareאֶחָי׃my brethren?

    But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?

49. 49

    וַיֵּטAnd he stretched forthיָדוֹhis handעַל־תַּלְמִידָיוtoward his disciples,וַיֹּאמַרand said,הִנֵּהBeholdאִמִּיmy motherוְאֶחָי׃and my brethren!

    And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!

    כִּיForכׇּלwhosoeverהָעֹשֶׂהshall doרְצוֹןthe will ofאָבִיmy Fatherשֶׁבַּשָׁמָיִםwhich is in heaven,הוּאthe sameאָחis brother,וְאָחוֹתand sister,וְאֵםand motherלִי׃unto me.

    For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
