1. 1

   וַיְהִיInבַּיָּמִיםdaysהָהֵםthoseבְּהִקָּבֵץwhen there gatheredעַםthe multitudeרָבvery great,וְאֵיןand they hadלָהֶםnotמַה־יֹּאכֵלוּnothing to eat,וַיִּקְרָאcalledיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֶל־תַּלְמִידָיוhis disciples unto him,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֲלֵיהֶם׃unto them,

   In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,

   נִכְמְרוּI have compassionרַחֲמַיin my bowelsעַל־הָעָםon the multitude,כִּי־זֶהbecauseשְׁלֹשֶׁתthreeיָמִיםdays,עָמְדוּhave they now continuedעִמִּיwith me,וְאֵיןand they haveלָהֶםnotלֶחֶםbreadלֶאֱכֹל׃to eat:

   I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat:

   וְהָיָהAndבְּשַׁלְּחִיif I sendאוֹתָםthem awayרְעֵבִיםfastingלְבָתֵּיהֶםto their own houses,יִתְעַלְּפוּthey will faintבַּדָּרֶךְby the way:כִּי־יֵשׁfor diversבָּהֶםof themאֲשֶׁרwhichבָּאוּcameמִמֶּרְחָק׃from far.

   And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.

   וַיַּעֲנוּAnd answeredתַלְמִידָיוhis disciplesוַיֹּאמְרוּand saidאֵלָיוhim,מֵאַיִןFrom whenceיוּכַלcanאִישׁa manלְהַשְׂבִּיעַsatisfyאֶת־אֵלֶּהthese menלֶחֶםwith breadפֹּהhereבַמִּדְבָּר׃in the wilderness?

   And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?

   וַיִּשְׁאַלAnd he askedאוֹתָםthem,וַיֹּאמַרsaying,כַּמָּהHow manyכִכְּרוֹת־לֶחֶםloavesיֵשׁhaveלָכֶםyou?וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they said,שֶׁבַע׃Seven.

   And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.

6. 6

   וַיְצַוAnd he commandedאֶת־הָעָםthe peopleלַשֶׁבֶתto sit downלָאָרֶץon the ground:וַיִּקַּחand he tookאֶת־שֶׁבַעthe sevenכִּכְּרוֹתloavesהַלֶּחֶםof bread,וַיְבָרֶךְand gave thanks,וַיִּפְרֹסand brake,וַיִּתֵּןand gaveלְתַלְמִידָיוto his disciplesלָשׂוּםto setלִפְנֵיהֶםbefore them;וַיָּשִׂימוּand they did set themלִפְנֵיbeforeהָעָם׃the people.

   And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.

   וְלָהֶםAnd they hadמְעַטa fewדָּגִיםfishes:קְטַנִּיםsmallוַיְבָרֶךְand he blessed,וַיֹּאמֶרand commandedלָשׂוּםto set themלִפְנֵיהֶםbefore them.גַּם־אֶת־אֵלֶּה׃also

   And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.

8. 8

   וַיֹּאכְלוּSo they did eat,וַיִּשְׂבָּעוּand were filled:וַיִּשְׂאוּand they took upמִן־הַפְּתוֹתִיםof the broken meatהַנּוֹתָרִיםthat was leftשִׁבְעָהsevenדוּדִים׃baskets.

   So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.

9. 9

   וְהָאֹכְלִיםAnd they that had eatenכְּאַרְבַּעַתwere about fourאֲלָפִיםthousand:וַיְשַׁלְּחֵם׃and he sent them away.

   And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

10. 10

    וַיֵּרֶדAnd straightway he enteredבׇּאֳנִיָּהinto a shipעִם־תַּלְמִידָיוwith his disciples,וַיָּבֹאand cameאֶל־גְּלִילוֹתinto the parts ofדַּלְמָנוּתָא׃Dalmanutha.

    And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

11. 11

    וַיֵּצְאוּAnd came forth,הַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Phariseesוַיָּחֵלּוּand beganלְהִתְוַכַּחto questionעִמּוֹwith him,וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּseekingמֵאִתּוֹof himאוֹתa signמִן־הַשָּׁמַיִםfrom heaven,לְמַעַןtoנַסֹּתוֹ׃tempt him.

    And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.

12. 12

    וַיֵאָנַחAnd he sighed deeplyבְּרוּחוֹin his spirit,וַיֹּאמַרand saith,מַה־הַדּוֹרWhy doth generationהַזֶּהthisמְבַקֶּשׁ־לוֹseek afterאוֹתa sign?אָמֵןverilyאֹמֵרsayאֲנִיIלָכֶםunto you,אִם־יִנָּתֵןThere shall noאוֹתsign be givenלַדּוֹרunto generation.הַזֶּה׃this

    And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

13. 13

    וַיַּעַלAnd he leftמֵעֲלֵיהֶםthem,וַיָּשׇׁבand enteringוַיֵּרֶדand going downבׇּאֳנִיָּהinto the shipוַיַּעֲבֹרagain departedאֶל־עֵבֶרto the other sideהַיָּם׃of the sea.

    And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.

14. 14

    וְהֵםNow the disciplesשָׁכְחוּhad forgottenלָקַחַתto takeבְּיָדָםin their handלָחֶםbread,וְלֹא־הָיָהneither hadלָהֶםtheyבׇּאֳנִיָּהin the ship with themבִּלְתִּיmore thanאִם־כִּכַּר־לֶחֶםloaf.אֶחָת׃one

    Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.

15. 15

    וַיַּזְהֵרAnd he chargedאוֹתָםthem,לֵאמֹרsaying,רְאוּTake heed,הִשָּׁמְרוּbewareלָכֶםyourselvesמִשְׂאֹרof the leaven ofהַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Pharisees,וּמִשְׂאֹרand of the leaven ofהוֹרְדוֹס׃Herod.

    And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

16. 16

    וַיַּחְשְׁבוּAnd they reasonedכֹּהthisוָכֹהand that,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,אִישׁamongאֶל־רֵעֵהוּthemselves,עַלIt isכִּי־לֶחֶםbecause breadאֵיןis notאִתָּנוּ׃with us.

    And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.

17. 17

    וַיֵּדַעAnd when knew it,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרhe saithלָהֶםunto them,מַה־תַּחְשְׁבוּWhy reason you,עַלbecauseכִּי־לֶחֶםthat breadאֵיןis notלָכֶםto you?הַעוֹדyetלֹאdo you notתַשְׂכִּילוּperceive,וְלֹאneitherתָבִינוּunderstand?וְלִבְּכֶםhave you your heartעוֹדֶנּוּyetקָשֶׁה׃hardened?

    And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?

18. 18

    עֵינַיִםeyesלָכֶםhave you,וְלֹאandתִרְאוּsee you not?וְאׇזְנַיִםand earsלָכֶםhave you,וְלֹאandתִשְׁמְעוּhear you not?וְלֹאand do you notתִזְכֹּרוּ׃remember?

    Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?

19. 19

    כַּאֲשֶׁרWhenפָּרַסְתִּיI brakeאֶת־חֲמֵשֶׁתthe fiveכִּכְּרוֹתloavesהַלֶּחֶםof breadלַחֲמֵשֶׁתamong fiveאַלְפֵיthousandאִישׁmen,כַּמָּהhow manyסַלִּיםbasketsמְלֵאֵיfullפְתוֹתִיםof fragmentsנְשָׂאתֶםtook you up?וַיֹּאמְרוּThey sayאֵלָיוunto him,שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂר׃Twelve.

    When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.

20. 20

    וּבַשֶּׁבַעAnd when the sevenלְאַרְבַּעַתamong fourאַלְפֵיthousandאִישׁmen,כַּמָּהhow manyדוּדִיםbasketsמְלֵאֵיfullפְתוֹתִיםof fragmentsנְשָׂאתֶםtook you up?וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they saidאֵלָיוunto him,שִׁבְעָה׃Seven.

    And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.

21. 21

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אֵיךְHow is it thatלֹאnotתָבִינוּ׃you do understand?

    And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?

22. 22

    וַיָּבֹאAnd he comethאֶל־בֵּית־צָיְדָהto Bethsaida;וַיָּבִיאוּand they bringאֵלָיוunto himאִישׁa man,עִוֵּרblindוַיִּתְחַנֲנוּand besoughtלוֹhimלָגַעַתto touchבּוֹ׃him.

    And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him.

23. 23

    וַיֹּאחֶזAnd he tookבְּיַדby the hand,הָעִוֵּרthe blind manוַיּוֹלִיכֵהוּand led himאֶל־מִחוּץout ofלַכְּפָרthe town;וַיָּרָקand when he had spitבְּעֵינָיוon his eyes,וַיָּשֶׂםand putיָדָיוhis handsעָלָיוupon him,וַיִּשְׁאָלֵהוּhe asked himוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,הֲרֹאֶהsee youאָתָּה׃ought?

    And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.

24. 24

    וַיַּבֵּטAnd he looked up,וַיֹּאמֶרand said,אֶרְאֶהI seeאֶת־בְּנֵיthe sons ofהָאָדָםmenכִּיasמִתְהַלְּכִיםwalking.כְּאִילָנוֹתtrees,אֲנִיIרֹאֶה׃see.

    And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.

25. 25

    וַיּוֹסֶףAfter thatוַיָּשֶׂםhe putשֵׁנִיתagainיָדָיוhis handsעַל־עֵינָיוupon his eyes,וַתִּפָּקַחְנָהand were openedעֵינָיוhis eyes:וַיֵּרָפֵאand he was restored,וַיַּרְאand sawהַכֹּלevery manהֵיטֵבclearlyעַד־לְמֵרָחוֹק׃afar off.

    After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.

26. 26

    וַיְשַׁלְּחֵהוּAnd he sent him awayאֶל־בֵּיתוֹto his house,וַיֹּאמַרsaying,אַל־תָּבֹאNeither goאֶל־תּוֹךְintoהַכְּפָרthe town,וְאַל־תְּדַבֵּרnor tellלְאִישׁit to anyבַּכְּפָר׃in the town.

    And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

27. 27

    וַיֵּצֵאAnd went out,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוְתַלְמִידָיוand his disciples,לָלֶכֶתto goאֶל־כְּפַרֵיinto the towns ofקֵיסַרְיָהCaesareaשֶׁל־פִילִיפּוֹסPhilippi:וַיְהִיandבַדֶּרֶךְby the wayוַיִּשְׁאַלhe askedאֶת־תַּלְמִידָיוhis disciples,וַיֹּאמֶרsayingאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,מָה־אֹמְרִיםWhom do sayלִיof me,בְּנֵיthe sons ofאָדָםmen,מִי־אָנִי׃that I am?

    And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Cæsarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?

28. 28

    וַיַּעֲנוּAnd they answered,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,יוֹחָנָןJohnהַמַּטְבִּילthe Baptist:וְיֵשׁbut someאֹמְרִיםsay,אֵלִיָּסElias;וַאֲחֵרִיםand others,אֹמְרִיםsay,אֶחָדOneמִן־הַנְּבִיאִים׃of the prophets.

    And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.

29. 29

    וַיִּשְׁאַלAnd he saithאֹתָםunto them,לֵאמֹרsaying,וְאַתֶּםButמַה־תֹּאמְרוּwhom say youלִיof me,מִי־אָנִיthat I am?וַיַּעַןAnd answerethפֶּטְרוֹסPeterוַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֵלָיוunto him,אַתָּהYouהוּאartהַמָּשִׁיחַ׃the Christ.

    And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.

30. 30

    וַיָּעַדAnd he chargedבָּםthemלְבִלְתִּיthat they shouldדַבֵּר־עָלָיוtell of himלְאִישׁ׃to no man.

    And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.

31. 31

    וַיָּחֶלAnd he beganלְהוֹרֹתָםto teach them,שֶׁצָּרִיךְthat mustבֶּן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manלֵעָנוֹתsufferהַרְבֵּהmany things,וְהַזְּקֵנִיםand of the elders,וְרָאשֵׁיand of the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriests,וְהַסּוֹפְרִיםand scribes,יִמְאָסֻהוּwho shall reject him,וְיֵהָרֵגand be killed,וּמִקְצֵהand afterשְׁלשֶׁתthreeיָמִיםdaysקוֹםriseיָקוּם׃again.

    And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

32. 32

    וְהוּאAnd heדִבֶּרspakeאֶת־הַדָּבָרthe sayingהַזֶּהthisבְּאׇזְנֵיin the ears ofכֻלָּםall.וַיִּקָּחֵהוּAnd took him,פֶטְרוֹסPeterוַיָּחֶלand beganלִגְעָר־בּוֹ׃to rebuke him.

    And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.

33. 33

    וַיִּפֶןBut when he had turnedאַחֲרָיוabout,וַיַּבֵּטand lookedאֶל־תַּלְמִידָיוon his disciples,וַיִּגְעַרhe rebukedבְּפֶטְרוֹסPeter,וַיֹּאמַרsaying,סוּרGet youמֵעַלbehindפָּנַיme,הַשָּׂטָןSatan:כִּיforאֵיןnotלִבְּךָis your heart onלְדִבְרֵיthe things that be ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,כִּיbutאִםratherלְדִבְרֵיthe things that be ofהָאָדָם׃men.

    But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

34. 34

    וַיִּקְרָאAnd when he had calledאֶל־הָעָםthe people unto himוְאֶל־תַּלְמִידָיוwith his disciples also,וַיֹּאמֶרhe saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הֶחָפֵץWhosoever willלָלֶכֶתcomeאַחֲרַיafter me,יְכַחֵשׁlet him denyבְּנַפְשׁוֹhimself,וְיִשָׂאand take upאֶת־צְלוּבוֹhis cross,וְיֵלֵךְand followאַחֲרָי׃me.

    And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

35. 35

    כִּיForכׇּל־אֲשֶׁרwhosoeverיַחְפֹּץwillלְהַצִּילsaveאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹhis lifeיְאַבְּדֶנָּהshall lose it;וְכֹלbut whosoeverאֲשֶׁרwhichתֹּאבַדshall loseנַפְשׁוֹhis lifeלְמַעֲנִיfor my sakeוּלְמַעַןandהַבְּשׂוֹרָהthe gospel's,הוּאthe sameיַצִּילֶנָּה׃shall save it.

    For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.

36. 36

    כִּיForמַה־יִּסְכֹּןwhat shall it profitלְאָדָםa man,שֶׁיִּקְנֶהif he shall gainאֶת־כׇּל־הָעוֹלָםthe whole world,וְנִשְׁחֲתָהand loseנַפְשׁוֹ׃his own soul?

    For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

37. 37

    אוֹOrמַה־יִּתֵּןwhat shall giveאִישׁa manפִּדְיוֹןin exchange forנַפְשׁוֹ׃his soul?

    Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

38. 38

    כִּיForהָאִישׁwhosoeverאֲשֶׁר־הָיִיתִיtherefore shall be ashamedאֲנִיof meוּדְבָרַיand of my wordsלוֹunto himלְחֶרְפָּהa reproach,בַּדּוֹרin generation;הַנֹּאֵףadulterousוְהַחוֹטֵאand sinfulהַזֶּהthis;אַף־הוּאof him alsoיִהְיֶהshallלְחֶרְפָּהbe ashamed,לְבֶן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manבְּבוֹאוֹwhen he comethבִּכְבוֹדin the glory ofאָבִיוhis Fatherעִם־הַמַּלְאָכִיםwith the angelsהַקְּדוֹשִׁים׃holy.

    Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
