1. 1

   וַיִּקָּהֲלוּThen came togetherאֵלָיוunto himהַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Pharisees,וַאֲנָשִׁיםand certainמִן־הַסּוֹפְרִיםof the scribes,אֲשֶׁרwhichבָּאוּcameמִירוּשָׁלָיִם׃from Jerusalem.

   Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.

2. 2

   וַיְהִיAnd whenכִּרְאוֹתָםthey sawמִתַּלְמִידָיוsome of his disciplesאֹכְלִיםeatלֶחֶםbreadבְּיָדַיִםwith hands,טְמֵאוֹתdefiled,כְּלוֹמַרthat is to say,בְּלֹאwithנְטִילָהunwashen,וַיּוֹכִיחוּthey found faultאֹתָם׃with them.

   And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.

3. 3

   כִּיForהַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Pharisees,וְכׇל־הַיְּהוּדִיםand all the Jews,לֹאnot,יֹאכְלוּeatעַד־אֲשֶׁרexceptנָטְלוּthey washאֶת־יְדֵיהֶםtheir handsעַד־הַפֶּרֶקoft,בְּאׇחֳזָםholdingבְּמָה־שֶּׁמָּסְרוּthe tradition ofהַזְּקֵנִים׃the elders.

   For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.

4. 4

   וְאֶתAndאֲשֶׁרthat which isמִן־הַשׂוּקfrom the marketאֵינָםthey do notאֹכְלִיםeatבְּלֹאwithoutטְבִילָהwashing.וְעוֹדAndדְּבָרִיםother thingsרַבִּיםmanyאֲשֶׁרthere be, whichקִבְּלוּthey have receivedלִשְׁמֹרto hold,כְּמוֹasטְבִילַתthe washing ofכֹּסוֹתcups,וְכַדִּיםand pots,וְיוֹרוֹתbrasen vessels,וּמִטּוֹת׃and of tables.

   And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.

   וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּThen askedאוֹתוֹhimהַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Phariseesוְהַסּוֹפְרִיםand scribes,מַדּוּעַWhyתַּלְמִידֶיךָyour disciplesאֵינָםdo notנֹהֲגִיםwalkכְּפִיaccording toמַסֹּרֶתthe tradition ofהַזְּקֵנִיםthe elders,כִּי־אֹכְלִיםbut eatלֶחֶםbreadבְּלֹאwithoutנְטִילַתwashing ofיָדָיִם׃hands?

   Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

6. 6

   וַיַּעַןHe answeredוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הֵיטֵבWellנִבָּאhath prophesiedיְשַׁעְיָהוּEsaiasעֲלֵיכֶםof youהַחֲנֵפִיםhypocrites,כַּכָּתוּבas it is written,הָעָםpeopleהַזֶּהThisבִּשְׂפָתָיוwith their lips,כִּבְּדוּנִיhonoreth meוְלִבּוֹbut their heartרִחַקis farמִמֶּנִּי׃from me.

   He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

7. 7

   וְתֹהוּHowbeit in vainיִרְאָתָםdo they worshipאֹתִיme,מִצְוֹתthe commandments ofאֲנָשִׁיםmen.מְלַמְּדִים׃teaching for doctrines

   Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

8. 8

   כִּיForעֲזַבְתֶּםlaying asideאֶת־מִצְוַתthe commandment ofאֱלֹהִיםGod,לְהַחֲזִיקyou holdבְּמַסֹּרֶתthe tradition ofבְּנֵי־אָדָםmen,טְבִילוֹתas the washing ofכַּדִּיםpotsוְכֹסוֹתand cups:וְכָאֵלֶּהand such like thingsרַבּוֹתmany,אַתֶּםyouעֹשִׂים׃do.

   For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

9. 9

   וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,יָפֶהFull wellבִטַּלְתֶּםyou rejectאֶת־מִצְוַתthe commandment ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,כְּדֵיthatשֶׁתִּשְׁמְרוּyou may keepאֶת־הַמַּסֹּרֶתtradition.שֶׁלָּכֶם׃your own

   And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

10. 10

    כִּי־משֶׁהFor Mosesאָמַרsaid,כַּבֵּדHonorאֶת־אָבִיךָyour fatherוְאֶת־אִמֶּךָand your mother;וּמְקַלֵּלand, Whoso cursethאָבִיוfatherוְאִמּוֹor mother,מוֹתlet him dieיוּמָת׃the death:

    For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:

11. 11

    וְאַתֶּםBut youאֹמְרִיםsay,אִישׁA man,כִּי־יֹאמַרif he shall sayלְאָבִיוto his fatherוּלְאִמּוֹor mother,קׇרְבָּןIt is Corban,פֵּרוּשׁוֹthat is to say,מַתָּנָהa gift,לֵאלֹהִיםunto God,מַה־שֶּׁאַתָּהby whatsoeverנֶהֱנֶהyou might be profitedלִיby me;פָּטוּרfreeהוּא׃he shall be;

    But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.

12. 12

    וְלֹאAndתַנִּיחוּyou sufferלוֹhimלַעֲשׂוֹתto doעוֹדno moreמְאוּמָהoughtלְאָבִיוfor his fatherוּלְאִמּוֹ׃or his mother;

    And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;

13. 13

    וַתָּפֵרוּMaking of none effectאֶת־דְּבַרthe word ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodעַל־יְדֵיthroughקַבָּלַתְכֶםyour tradition,אֲשֶׁרwhichקִבַּלְתֶּםyou have delivered:וְהַרְבֵּהand manyכָאֵלֶּהsuch like thingsאַתֶּםdoעֹשִׂים׃you.

    Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

14. 14

    וַיִּקְרָאAnd when he had calledאֶל־כׇּל־הָעָםall the people unto him,וַיֹּאמֶרhe saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,שִׁמְעוּHearkenאֵלַיunto meכֻּלְּכֶםevery one of you,וְהָבִינוּ׃and understand:

    And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:

15. 15

    אֵיןThere isדָּבָרnothingמִחוּץfrom withoutלְאָדָםa man,אֲשֶׁרthatיוּכַלcanלְטַמֵּאdefileאוֹתוֹhimבְּבֹאוּenteringאֶל־קִרְבּוֹinto him:כִּיbutאִם־הַדְּבָרִיםthe things whichהַיּוֹצְאִיםcome outמִמֶּנּוּof him,הֵמָּהthose are theyיְטַמְּאוּthat defileאֶת־הָאָדָם׃the man.

    There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

16. 16

    כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרIf any manאׇזְנַיִםearsלוֹhath,לִשְׁמֹעַto hear,יִשְׁמָע׃let him hear.

    If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

17. 17

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenשָׁבhe was enteredהַבַּיְתָהinto the houseמִן־הֶהָמוֹןfrom the people,וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּasked himתַלְמִידָיוhis disciplesעַל־דְּבַרconcerningהַמָּשָׁל׃the parable.

    And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.

18. 18

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הַאַף־אַתֶּםAre you soחַסְרֵיwithoutבִינָהunderstanding also?הֲלֹאDo you notתַשְׂכִּילוּperceive,כִּיthatכׇל־הַבָּאwhatsoever thing enterethאֶל־תּוֹךְintoהָאָדָםthe manמִחוּצָהfrom withoutלוֹhim,לֹאit cannotיְטַמְּאֶנּוּ׃defile him;

    And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

19. 19

    כִּיBecauseלֹא־יָבוֹאit entereth notבְלִבּוֹinto his heart,כִּיbutאִם־בִּכְרֵשׂוֹinto the belly,וְיֵצֵאand goeth outאֶל־בֵּיתintoהַכִּסֵּאthe draught,הַמְנַקֶּהpurgingכׇל־הַנֶּאֱכׇל׃all meats?

    Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

20. 20

    וַיֹּאמַרAnd he said,הַיֹּצֵאThat which cometh outמִן־הָאָדָםof the man,הוּאthatמְטַמֵּאdefilethאֶת־הָאָדָם׃the man.

    And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

21. 21

    כִּיForמִקֶּרֶבfrom withinהָאָדָםthe man,מִלִּבּוֹout of his heart,יֹצְאוֹתproceedהַמַּחֲשָׁבוֹתthoughts,הָרָעוֹתevilנָאֹףadulteries,וְזָנֹהfornications,וְרָצוֹחַ׃murders,

    For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22. 22

    וְגָנוֹבThefts,וְאַהֲבַתand love ofבֶּצַעgain,וְרִשְׁעָהwickedness,וּרְמִיָּהdeceit,וְזוֹלֲלוּתlasciviousness,וְעַיִןan eyeרָעָהevil,וְגִדּוּףblasphemy,וְזָדוֹןpride,וְסִכְלוּת׃foolishness:

    Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23. 23

    כׇּל־הָרָעוֹתAll the evil thingsהָאֵלֶּהthese,מִקֶּרֶבfrom withinהָאָדָםthe manהֵןtheyיוֹצְאוֹתcome out,וּמְטַמְּאוֹתand defileאֹתוֹ׃the man.

    All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

24. 24

    וַיָּקׇםAnd he arose,מִשָּׁםfrom thenceוַיֵּלֶךְand wentלוֹhis way,אֶל־גְּבוּלוֹתinto the borders ofצוֹרTyreוְצִידוֹןand Sidon,וּבְבוֹאוֹand enteredהַבַּיְתָהinto an house,לֹאand notאָבָהhe wouldשֶׁיִּוָּדַעthat it be knownלְאִישׁto any man:וְלֹאbutיָכֹלhe could notלְהִסָּתֵר׃be hid.

    And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.

25. 25

    כִּיForאִשָּׁהa certain woman,אֲשֶׁרwhoseרוּחַspirit,טֻמְאָהan uncleanנִכְנְסָהhad enteredבְּבִתָּהּinto her daughterהַקְּטַנָּהlittle,שָׁמְעָהheardאֶת־שִׁמְעוֹof him,וַתָּבֹאand cameוַתִּפֹּלand fellלְרַגְלָיו׃at his feet:

    For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:

26. 26

    וְהָאִשָּׁהThe woman wasיְוָנִיתa Greek,וְאֶרֶץand the country ofמוֹלַדְתָּהּher nativity;פְנִיקְיָאPheniciaאֲשֶׁרwhich isלְסוּרְיָאof Syria,וַתְּבַקֵּשׁand she besoughtמִמֶּנּוּhimלְגָרֵשׁthat he would cast forthאֶת־הַשֵּׁדthe devilמִבִּתָּהּ׃out of her daughter.

    The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

27. 27

    וַיֹּאמֶרBut saidאֵלֶיהָunto her,יֵשׁוּעַJesusהַנִּיחִיLetלַבָּנִיםthe childrenלִשְׂבֹּעַbe filledבָּרִאשׁוֹנָהfirst:כִּיforלֹא־טוֹבit is not meetלָקַחַתto takeלֶחֶםbread,הַבָּנִיםthe children'sוּלְהַשְׁלִיכוֹand to cast itלִצְעִירֵיuntoהַכְּלָבִים׃the dogs.

    But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

28. 28

    וַתַּעַןAnd she answeredוַתֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,כֵּןYes,אֲדֹנִיLord:אֲבָלyetגַּם־צְעִירֵיeven the littleהַכְּלָבִיםthe dogsיֹאכְלוּeatתַּחַתunderהַשֻּׁלְחָןthe tableמִפֵּרוּרֵיof the crumbs ofלֶחֶםthe bread ofהַבָּנִים׃the children.

    And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.

29. 29

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֵלֶיהָunto her,בִּגְלַלForדְּבָרֵךְyour sayingזֶהthis,לְכִי־לָךְgo your way;יָצָאis gone outהַשֵּׁדthe devilמִבִּתֵּךְ׃of your daughter.

    And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.

30. 30

    וַתָּבֹאAnd when she was comeאֶל־בֵּיתָהּto her house,וַתִּמְצָאshe foundאֶת־הַיַּלְדָּהher daughterמֻשְׁכֶּבֶתlaidעַל־הַמִּטָּהupon the bed,וְהַשֵּׁדand the devilיָצָאgone outמִמֶּנָּה׃of her.

    And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

31. 31

    וַיָּשׇׁבAnd again,וַיֵּצֵאdepartingמִגְּבוּלfrom the coasts ofצוֹרTyreוְצִידוֹןand Sidon,וַיָּבֹאhe cameאֶל־יָםunto the sea ofהַגָּלִילGalilee,בְּתוֹךְthrough the midst ofגְּבוּלthe coasts ofעֶשֶׂרthe tenהֶעָרִים׃cities (Decapolis).

    And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.

32. 32

    וַיָּבִיאוּAnd they bringאֵלָיוunto himאִישׁoneאֲשֶׁרthatהָיָהwasחֵרֵשׁdeaf,וְאִלֵּםand had an impediment in his speech;וַיִּתְחַנֲנוּand they beseechלוֹhimלָשׂוּםto putעָלָיוupon him.אֶת־יָדוֹ׃his hand

    And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.

33. 33

    וַיִּקַּחAnd he tookאֹתוֹhimלְבַדּוֹasideמִקֶּרֶבfromהֶהָמוֹןthe multitude,וַיָּשֶׂםand putאֶת־אֶצְבְּעוֹתָיוhis fingersבְּאׇזְנָיוinto his ears,וַיָּרָקand he spit,וַיַּגַּעand touchedעַל־לְשֹׁנוֹ׃his tongue;

    And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;

34. 34

    וַיַּבֵּטAnd looking upהַשָּׁמַיְמָהto heaven,וַיֵּאָנַחhe sighed,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֵלָיוunto him,אִפַּתַּחEphphatha,וּפֵרוּשׁוֹthat is,הִתְפַּתֵּחַ׃Be opened.

    And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

35. 35

    וּבְרֶגַעAnd straightwayנִפְתְּחוּwere opened,אׇזְנָיוhis earsוַיֻּתַּרand was loosed,אֵסוּרthe string ofלְשׁוֹנוֹhis tongueוַיְדַבֵּרand he spakeבְּשָׂפָהwith a lipבְרוּרָה׃plain.

    And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.

36. 36

    וַיְצַוAnd he chargedעֲלֵיהֶםthemשֶׁלּא־יַגִּידוּthat they should tellלְאִישׁno man:וְכַאֲשֶׁרbut the moreיַזְהִירֵםhe charged them,כֵּןso muchיַרְבּוּthe more a great dealלְהַשְׁמִיעַ׃they published it;

    And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;

37. 37

    וַיִּשְׁתּוֹמֲמוּAnd were astonishedעַד־מְאֹדbeyond measure,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,אֶת־הַכֹּלall thingsעָשָׂהHe hath doneיָפֶהwell:גַּם־הַחֵרְשִׁיםboth the deafהוּאheעֹשֶׂהmakethלְשֹׁמְעִיםto hear,גַּם־הָאִלְּמִיםand the dumbלִמְדַבְּרִים׃to speak.

    And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
