1. 1

   וַיְהִיAnd againמִיָּמִיםafter some daysוַיָּבֹאhe enteredשֵׁנִיתthe second timeאֶל־כְּפַר־נַחוּםinto Capernaum;וַיִּשְׁמְעוּand it was noisedכִּי־הוּאthat he wasבַבָּיִת׃in the house.

   And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.

2. 2

   וַיֵּאָסְפוּAnd were gathered togetherרַבִּיםmany,מְהֵרָהstraightwayעַד־אֶפֶסinsomuch that there was noמָקוֹםroomלַעֲמֹדto receive them,אַף־לִפְנֵיno, not so much as aboutהַפָּתַחthe door:וַיְדַבֵּרand he preachedאֲלֵיהֶםunto them.אֶת־הַדָּבָר׃the word

   And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.

   וַיָּבֹאוּAnd they comeאֵלָיוunto him,אֲנָשִׁיםmenנֹשְׂאִיםbringingאִישׁoneנְכֵהsickאֵבָרִיםof the palsy,וַיִּשָּׂאֻהוּwhich was borneבְּאַרְבָּעָה׃of four.

   And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.

   וְלֹאAnd whenיָכְלוּthey could notלָגֶשֶׁתcome nighאֵלָיוunto himמִפְּנֵיforהָעָםthe press,וַיָּסִירוּthey uncoveredאֶת־הַגָּגthe roofבַּמָּקוֹםin the placeאֲשֶׁרwhereהָיָהhe wasשָׁםthere:וַיַּחְתְּרוּand when they had brokenחֲתִירָהa hole,וַיּוֹרִידוּthey let downאֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּבthe bedאֲשֶׁרwhereinשָׁכַבlayעָלֶיהָthereonנְכֵהthe sickהָאֵבָרִים׃of the palsy

   And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.

   וַיְהִיWhenכִּרְאוֹתsawיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֶת־אֱמוּנָתָםtheir faith,וַיֹּאמֶרhe saidאֶל־נְכֵהunto the sickהָאֵבָרִיםof the palsy,בְּנִיSon,נִסְלְחוּ־לְךָbe forgiven you.חַטֹּאתֶיךָ׃your sins

   When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

   וְשָׁםBut thereאֲנָשִׁיםwere certainמִן־הַסּוֹפְרִיםof the scribesיֹשְׁבִיםsitting there,וַיֹּאמְרוּand reasoningבְּלִבָּם׃in their hearts,

   But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,

   מַה־לָּזֶהWhy doth this manכִּיthusיְדַבֵּרspeakגִּדּוּפִיםblasphemiesכָּאֵלֶּהlike these?מִיwhoיָכֹלcanלִסְלֹחַforgiveלַחֲטָאִיםsinsכִּיbutאִםratherהָאֱלֹהִיםGodלְבַדּוֹ׃only?

   Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

8. 8

   וַיֵּדַעAnd perceivedיֵשׁוּעַJesusבְּרוּחוֹin his spiritכִּי־כֵןthat soחֹשְׁבִיםthey reasonedבִּלְבָבָםwithin themselves,וַיֹּאמֶרhe saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,מַדּוּעַWhyתַּחְשְׁבוּreason youכָאֵלֶּהthese thingsבִּלְבַבְכֶם׃in your hearts?

   And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?

9. 9

   מָהWhetherהַנָּקֵלis it easierהֶאָמֹרto sayאֶל־נְכֵהto the sickהָאֵבָרִיםof the palsy,נִסְלְחוּ־לְךָbe forgiven you;חַטֹּאתֶיךָYour sinsאִם־אָמוֹרor to say,קוּםArise,שָׂאand take upאֶת־מִשְׁכָּבְךָyour bed,וְהִתְהַלֵּךְ׃and walk?

   Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?

10. 10

    וּלְמַעַןBut thatתֵּדְעוּןyou may knowכִּיthatבֶן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manיֶשׁ־לוֹhathהַשָּׁלְטָןpowerלִסְלֹחַto forgiveלַחֲטָאִיםsinsבָּאָרֶץon earth,וַיֹּאמֶר(he saithאֶל־נְכֵהto the sickהָאֵבָרִים׃of the palsy,)

    But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)

11. 11

    לְךָunto youאֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayקוּםArise,שָׂאand take upאֶת־מִשְׁכָּבְךָyour bed,וְלֵךְand go your wayאֶל־בֵּיתֶךָ׃into your house.

    I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.

12. 12

    וַיָּקׇםAnd he aroseפִּתְאֹםimmediately,וַיִּשָּׂאtook upאֶת־מִשְׁכָּבוֹthe bed,וַיֵּצֵאand went forthלְעֵינֵיbeforeכֻלָּםthem all;עַדinsomuch thatכִּי־תָמְהוּwere amazed,כֻלָּםthey allוַיְשַׁבְּחוּand glorifiedאֶת־הָאֱלֹהִיםGod,לֵאמֹרsaying,מֵעוֹלָםWe neverלֹא־רָאִינוּsaw itכָזֹאת׃on this fashion.

    And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

13. 13

    וַיָּשׇׁבAnd he went forthוַיֵּצֵאagainאֶל־יַדbyהַיָּםthe sea side;וַיָּבֹאוּand resortedאֵלָיוunto him,כׇּל־הָעָםall the multitudeוַיְלַמְּדֵם׃and he taught them.

    And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.

14. 14

    וַיְהִיAndבְעָבְרוֹas he passed by,וַיַּרְאhe sawאֶת־לֵוִיLeviבֶּן־חַלְפַיthe son of Alphaeusיֹשֵׁבsittingבְּבֵיתatהַמֶּכֶסthe receipt of custom,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,לְכָהFollowאַחֲרָיme.וַיָּקׇםAnd he aroseוַיֵּלֶךְand followedאַחֲרָיו׃him.

    And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphæus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.

15. 15

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כַּאֲשֶׁרthat, asהֵסֵבsat at meatבְּבֵיתוֹin his house,וַיַּסֵּבּוּsat also togetherמוֹכְסִיםpublicansוְחַטָּאִיםand sinnersרַבִּיםmanyעִם־יֵשׁוּעַwith Jesusוְעִם־תַּלְמִידָיוand his disciples:כִּיforרַבִּיםmany,הָיוּthere wereהַהֹלְכִיםand they followedאַחֲרָיו׃him.

    And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.

16. 16

    וְהַסּוֹפְרִיםAnd when the scribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Phariseesרָאוּsawאֹתוֹhimאֹכֵלeatעִם־הַמּוֹכְסִיםwith publicansוְהַחַטָּאִיםand sinners,וַיֹּאמְרוּthey saidאֶל־תַּלְמִידָיוunto his disciples,מַה־לְּרַבְּכֶםHow is itכִּיthatאֹכֵלeatethוְשֹׁתֶהand drinkethהוּאheעִם־הַמּוֹכְסִיםwith publicansוְהַחַטָּאִים׃and sinners?

    And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?

17. 17

    וַיִּשְׁמַעWhen heard it,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרhe saith unto them,הַחֲזָקִיםThey that are wholeאֵינָםhave noצְרִיכִיםneedלְרֹפֵאof the physician,כִּיbutאִם־הַחֹלִיםthey that are sick:לֹאnotבָאתִיI cameלִקְרֹאto callהַצַּדִּיקִיםthe righteous,כִּיbutאִםratherהַחַטָּאִיםsinnersלִתְשׁוּבָה׃to repentance.

    When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

18. 18

    וְתַלְמִידֵיAnd the disciples ofיוֹחָנָןJohnוְתַלְמִידֵיandהַפְּרוּשִׁיםof the Phariseesהָיוּusedמַרְבִּיםoftלָצוּםto fast:וַיָּבֹאוּand they comeוַיֹּאמְרוּand sayאֵלָיוunto him,מַדּוּעַWhyתַּלְמִידֵיdo the disciples ofיוֹחָנָןJohnוְתַלְמִידֵיandהַפְּרוּשִׁיםof the Phariseesצָמִיםfast,וְתַלְמִידֶיךָbut your disciplesאֵינָםdo notצָמִים׃fast?

    And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

19. 19

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאֵיךְHowיוּכְלוּcanבְּנֵיthe children ofהַחֻפָּהthe bridechamberלָצוּםfast,בְּעוֹדwhileהֶחָתָןthe bridegroomעִמָּהֶםis with them?כׇּל־יְמֵיas long asהֱיוֹתthey haveהֶחָתָןthe bridegroomעִמָּהֶםwith them,לֹאnotיוּכְלוּthey cannotלָצוּם׃fast.

    And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

20. 20

    הִנֵּהButיָמִיםthe daysבָּאִיםwill come,וְלֻקַּחwhen shall be taken awayמֵאִתָּםfrom them,הֶחָתָןthe bridegroomוְאָזand thenיָצוּמוּshall they fastבַּיָּמִיםin days.הָהֵם׃those

    But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

21. 21

    אֵין־אָדָםNo manתֹּפֵרalso sewethטְלַאיa pieceבַדof clothחָדָשׁnewעַל־שִׂמְלָהon a garment:בָלָהoldכִּיforאִםif it beכֵּןso,יִנָּתֵקtaketh awayמִלוּיוֹthat which filleth it up,הֶחָדָשׁeven the new,מִן־הַבָּלָהfrom the old,וְיִתְרַחֵבand is made worse.הַקֶּרַע׃the rent

    No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.

22. 22

    וְאֵיןAnd noאָדָםmanנֹתֵןputtethיַיִןwineחָדָשׁnewבְּנֹאדוֹתinto bottles:בָּלִיםoldכִּיforאִםif it beכֵּןso,יְבַקַּעdoth burstהַיַּיִןthe wineהֶחָדָשׁnewאֶת־הַנּאֹדוֹתthe bottles,וְהַיַּיִןand the wineיִשָּׁפֵךְis spilled,וְהַנֹּאדוֹתand the bottlesיֹאבֵדוּwill be marred:אֲבָלbutיַיִןwineחָדָשׁnewיִנָּתֵןmust be putבְּנֹאדוֹתinto bottles.חֲדָשִׁים׃new

    And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

23. 23

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כְעָבְרוֹthat he wentבַּשַּׁבָּתon the sabbath dayבֵּיןthroughהַשָׂדוֹתthe corn fields;וַיָּחֵלּוּand began,תַלְמִידָיוhis disciplesלִקְטֹףto pluckמְלִילֹתthe ears of cornבְּלֶכְתָּם׃as they went.

    And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.

24. 24

    וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd saidאֵלָיוunto him,הַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe PhariseesרְאֵהBehold,מָה־הֵמָּהwhy do theyעֹשִׂיםthatבַּשַּׁבָּתon the sabbath dayאֵת־אֲשֶׁר־לֹאwhichיֵעָשֶׂה׃is not lawful?

    And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?

25. 25

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הֲכִיHave youלֹאneverקְרָאתֶםreadאֶת־אֲשֶׁרwhatעָשָׂהdid,דָוִדDavidבִּהְיֹתוֹwhenחָסֵרhe had need,וְרָעֵבand was an hungred,הוּאhe,וַאֲנָשָׁיו׃and they that were with him?

    And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?

26. 26

    אֲשֶׁרHowבָּאhe wentאֶל־בֵּיתinto the house ofאֱלֹהִיםGodבִּימֵיin the days ofאֶבְיָתָרAbiatharהַכֹּהֵןthe priest,הַגָּדוֹלhighוַיֹּאכַלand did eatאֶת־לֶחֶםthe bread ofהַפָּנִיםthe presence,אֲשֶׁרwhichלֹאis notנִתַּןlawfulלְאׇכְלָהto eatכִּיbutאִםratherלַכֹּהֲנִיםfor the priests,וַיִּתֵּןand gaveגַּם־לָאֲנָשִׁיםalso to themאֲשֶׁרwhichאִתּוֹ׃were with him?

    How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?

27. 27

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הַשַּׁבָּתThe sabbathנִתְּנָהwas madeבַּעֲבוּרforהָאָדָםman,וְלֹאand notהָאָדָםmanבַּעֲבוּרforהַשַּׁבָּת׃the sabbath:

    And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

28. 28

    לָכֵןThereforeאָדוֹןis Lordבֶּן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manגַּםalsoלַשַּׁבָּת׃of the sabbath.

    Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
