1. 1

   תְּחִלַּתThe beginning ofבְּשׂוֹרַתthe gospel ofיֵשׁוּעַJesusהַמָּשִׁיחַChrist,בֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִים׃the Son of God;

   The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;

2. 2

   כַּכָּתוּבAs it is writtenבַּנְּבִיאִיםin the prophets,הִנְנִיBehold, Iשֹׁלֵחַsendמַלְאָכִיmy messengerלְפָנֶיךָbefore your face,וּפִנָּהwhich shall prepareדַּרְכֶּךָyour wayלְפָנֶיךָ׃before you.

   As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

3. 3

   קוֹלThe voice ofקוֹרֵאone cryingבַמִּדְבָּרin the wilderness,פַּנּוּPrepare youדֶּרֶךְthe way ofיְהוָֹהthe Lord,יַשְּׁרוּmake straightמְסִלּוֹתָיו׃his paths.

   The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

4. 4

   יוֹחָנָןJohnהָיָהdidטֹבֵלbaptizeבַּמִּדְבָּרin the wilderness,וְקוֹרֵאand preachטְבִילַתthe baptism ofהַתְּשׁוּבָהrepentanceלִסְלִיחַתfor the remission ofחֲטָאִים׃sins.

   John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

   וַתֵּצֵאAnd there went outאֵלָיוunto himכׇּל־אֶרֶץall the land ofיְהוּדָהJudaea,וּבְנֵיand they ofיְרוּשָׁלָיִםJerusalem,וַיִּטָּבְלוּand were baptizedכֻלָּםallעַל־יָדוֹof himבִּנְהַרin the river ofהַיַּרְדֵּןJordan,מִתְוַדִּיםconfessingאֶת־חַטֹּאתָם׃their sins.

   And there went out unto him all the land of Judæa, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

   וְיוֹחָנָןAnd Johnלָבוּשׁwas clothed withשְׂעַרhair,גְּמַלִּיםcamel'sוְאֵזוֹרand with a girdle ofעוֹרa skinבְּמׇתְנָיוabout his loins;וּמַאֲכָלוֹand he did eatחֲגָבִיםlocustsוּדְבַשׁand honeyהַיָּעַר׃wild;

   And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

7. 7

   וַיִּקְרָאAnd preached,לֵאמֹרsaying,בּוֹאsurelyיָבֹאThere comethאַחֲרַיafter meהֶחָזָקone mightierמִמֶּנִּיthan I,אֲשֶׁרwhoseקָטֹנְתִּיI am not worthyמִלִּכְרֹעַto stoop downלְהַתִּירto unlooseאֶת־שְׂרוֹךְthe latchet ofנְעָלָיו׃his shoes.

   And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

8. 8

   אָנֹכִיIטָבַלְתִּיindeed have baptizedאֶתְכֶםyouבַּמָּיִםwith water:וְהוּאbut heיִטְבֹּלshall baptizeאֶתְכֶםyouבְּרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁ׃with the Holy Ghost.

   I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

9. 9

   וַיְהִיAnd it came to passבַּיָּמִיםin days,הָהֵםthoseוַיָּבֹאthat cameיֵשׁוּעַJesusמִנְּצֶרֶתfrom Nazarethאֲשֶׁרwhich isבַּגָּלִילof Galilee,וַיִּטָּבֵלand was baptizedעַל־יְדֵיofיוֹחָנָןJohnבַּיַּרְדֵּן׃in Jordan.

   And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.

10. 10

    וַיְהִיAndאַךְ־עָלֹהstraightwayעָלָהas he came upמִן־הַמָּיִםout of the water,וַיַּרְאhe sawהַשָּׁמַיִםthe heavensוְהִנֵּהbehold,נִפְתְּחוּopened,וְהָרוּחַand the Spiritכְּיוֹנָהlike a doveיֹרֵדdescendingעָלָיו׃upon him:

    And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

11. 11

    וַיְהִיAnd there cameקוֹלa voiceמִן־הַשָּׁמָיִםfrom heaven,אַתָּהsaying, You areבְּנִיmy Son,יְדִידִיbelovedאֲשֶׁרin whomרָצִיתִי־בוֹ׃I am well pleased.

    And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

12. 12

    וּמַהֵרAnd immediatelyהוֹצִיאוֹdriveth himהָרוּחַthe Spiritהַמִּדְבָּרָה׃into the wilderness.

    And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.

13. 13

    וַיְהִיAnd he wasשָׁםthereבַּמִּדְבָּרin the wildernessאַרְבָּעִיםfortyיוֹםdays,וְהַשָׂטָןand Satanנִסָּהוּtempted him;וַיְהִיand wasעִם־הַחַיּוֹתwith the wild beasts;וְהַמַּלְאָכִיםand the angelsשֵׁרְתוּהוּ׃ministered unto him.

    And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.

14. 14

    וְאַחֲרֵיNow afterאֲשֶׁרthatהָסְגַּרwas put in prison,יוֹחָנָןJohnבָּאcameיֵשׁוּעַJesusהַגָּלִילָהinto Galilee,וַיִּקְרָאpreachingאֶת־בְּשׂוֹרַתthe gospel ofמַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,וַיֹּאמַר׃And saying,

    Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

15. 15

    מָלְאָהis fulfilled,הָעֵתThe timeוְקָרְבָהand is at hand:מַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodשׁוּבוּrepent you,וְהַאֲמִינוּand believeבַבְּשׂוֹרָה׃the gospel.

    And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

16. 16

    וַיְהִיNowבְּהִתְהַלְּכוֹas he walkedעַל־יַדbyיָם־הַגָּלִילthe sea of Galilee,וַיַּרְאhe sawוְהִנֵּהand behold,שִׁמְעוֹןSimonוְאַנְדְּרַיand Andrewאֲחִיhisשִׁמְעוֹןbrotherפֹּרְשִׂיםcastingמְצוֹדָהa netבַּיָּםinto the sea:כִּיforדַיָּגִיםfishers.הָיוּ׃they were

    Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

17. 17

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,יֵשׁוּעַJesusלְכוּCome youאַחֲרַיafter me,וְאֶתֶּנְכֶםand I will make youדַּיְּגֵיto become fishers ofאֲנָשִׁים׃men.

    And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

18. 18

    וַיַּעַזְבוּAnd they forsookמַהֵרstraightwayאֶת־מִכְמְרֹתֵיהֶםtheir nets,וַיֵּלְכוּand followedאַחֲרָיו׃him.

    And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

19. 19

    וַיְהִיAndכְּעָבְרוֹwhen he had goneמְעַטa little furtherמִשָּׁםthence,וַיַּרְאhe sawאֶת־יַעֲקֹבJamesבֶּן־זַבְדַּיthe son of Zebedee,וְאֶת־יוֹחָנָןand Johnאָחִיוhis brother,וְגַם־הֵמָּהwho also wereבׇאֳנִיָּהin the shipוּמְתַקְּנִיםmendingאֶת־הַמִּכְמֹרוֹת׃their nets.

    And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.

20. 20

    וַיְמַהֵרAnd straightwayוַיִּקְרָאhe calledאֲלֵיהֶםthem:וַיַּעַזְבוּand they leftאֶת־זַבְדַּיZebedeeאֲבִיהֶםtheir fatherבׇּאֳנִיָּהin the shipעִם־הַשְׂכִירִיםwith the hired servants,וַיֵּלְכוּand wentאַחֲרָיו׃after him.

    And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

21. 21

    וַיָּבֹאוּAnd they wentאֶל־כְּפַר־נַחוּםinto Capernaum;וַיְמַהֵרand straightwayלָבוֹאhe enteredבַשַּׁבָּתon the sabbath dayלְבֵיתintoהַכְּנֵסֶתthe synagogue,וַיְלַמֵּד׃and taught.

    And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.

22. 22

    וַיִּשְׁתּוֹמֲמוּAnd they were astonishedעַל־תּוֹרָתוֹat his doctrine:כִּי־הָיָהforמְלַמְּדָםhe taught themכְּאִישׁas oneשִׁלְטוֹןthat had authority,וְלֹאand notכַּסֹּפְרִים׃as the scribes.

    And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

23. 23

    וְאִישׁAnd a manהָיָהwasשָׁםthereבְּבֵיתin the house ofהַכְּנֵסֶתthe synagogueשֶׁלָּהֶםtheirאֲשֶׁר־רוּחַwho had a spiritטֻמְאָהuncleanבּוֹin him;וַיִּזְעַקand he cried out,לֵאמֹר׃saying,

    And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,

24. 24

    אֲהָהּLet us alone;מָה־לָּנוּwhat have we to doוָלָךְwith you,יֵשׁוּעַyou Jesusהַנָּצְרִיof Nazareth?לְהַאֲבִידֵנוּto destroy usבָאתָare you come?יְדַעְתִּיךָI know youמִיwhoאַתָּהyou are,קְדוֹשׁthe Holy One ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

25. 25

    וַיִּגְעַר־בּוֹAnd rebuked him,יֵשׁוּעַJesusלֵאמֹרsaying,הֵאָלֵםHold your peace,וְצֵאand come outמִמֶּנּוּ׃of him.

    And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.

26. 26

    וַיִּסְחָבֵהוּAnd when had torn him,רוּחַthe spiritהַטֻּמְאָהuncleanוַיִּזְעַקand criedבְּקוֹלwith a voice,גָּדוֹלloudוַיֵּצֵאhe came outמִמֶּנּוּ׃of him.

    And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.

27. 27

    וַיִּבָּהֲלוּAnd they were amazed,כֻלָּםallוַיִּשְׁאֲלוּinsomuch that they questionedאִישׁamongאֶת־רֵעֵהוּthemselves,לֵאמֹרsaying,מַה־זֹּאתWhat thing is this?מַה־הִיאwhatהַתּוֹרָהdoctrine is this?הַחֲדָשָׁהnewאֲשֶׁרforאַף־לְרוּחוֹתeven the spiritsהַטֻּמְאָהuncleanמְצַוֶּהcommandethהוּאheבִּגְבוּרָהwith authority,וְהֵנָּהand theyשֹׁמְעוֹתdo obeyלוֹ׃him.

    And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

28. 28

    וַיֵּצֵאAnd spread abroadשִׁמְעוֹhis fameמַהֵרimmediatelyבְּכׇל־סְבִיבוֹתthroughout all the region round aboutאֶרֶץthe land ofהַגָּלִיל׃Galilee.

    And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

29. 29

    וַיְהִיAnd forthwith,אַחֲרֵיwhenצֵאתָםthey were come outמִבֵּיתofהַכְּנֵסֶתthe synagogue,וַיָּבֹאוּthey enteredבֵּיתָהinto the house ofשִׁמְעוֹןSimonוְאַנְדְּרַיand Andrew,עִםwithיַעֲקֹבJamesוְיוֹחָנָן׃and John.

    And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

30. 30

    וְחוֹתֶנֶתBut motherשִׁמְעוֹןSimon's wife'sשָׁכְבָהlayאֲחוּזַתsick ofהַקַּדָּחַתa fever,וַיְמַהֲרוּand anonוַיְדַבְּרוּthey tellאֵלָיוhimעָלֶיהָ׃of her.

    But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.

31. 31

    וַיִּגַּשׁAnd he cameוַיֹּאחֶזand took herבְּיָדָהּby the hand,וַיְקִימֶהָand lifted her up;וַתִּרֶףand leftמִמֶּנָּהherהַקַּדַּחַתthe feverפִּתְאֹםimmediately,וַתְּשָׁרֶתand she ministeredאוֹתָם׃unto them.

    And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.

32. 32

    וַיְהִיAndבָעֶרֶבat even,כְּבוֹאwhen did setהַשָּׁמֶשׁthe sun,וַיָּבִיאוּthey broughtאֵלָיוunto himאֵת־כׇּל־הַחוֹלִיםall that were diseased,וְאֵתandאֲחוּזֵיthem that were possessed withהַשֵּׁדִים׃devils.

    And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.

33. 33

    וְכׇל־הָעִירAnd all the cityנֶאֶסְפוּwas gatheredיַחְדָּוtogetherפֶּתַחat the door ofהַבַּיִת׃the house.

    And all the city was gathered together at the door.

34. 34

    וַיְרַפֵּאAnd he healedרַבִּיםmanyאֲשֶׁרthatהָיוּwereחוֹלִיםsickחֳלָיִיםof diseasesשׁוֹנִיםdivers,וַיְגָרֵשׁand cast outשֵׁדִיםdevilsהַרְבֵּהmanyוְלֹא־נָתַןand suffered notאֶת־הַשֵּׁדִיםthe devilsלְדַבֵּרto speak,כִּיbecauseיְדָעֻהוּ׃they knew him.

    And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.

35. 35

    וַיַּשְׁכֵּםAnd rising upבַּבֹּקֶרin the morning,בְּעוֹדa great whileנָשֶׁףbefore day,וַיֵּצֵאhe went out,וַיֵּלֶךְand departedאֶל־מְקוֹםinto a place,חׇרְבָּהsolitaryוַיִּתְפַּלֵּלand prayedשָׁם׃there.

    And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.

36. 36

    וַיִּרְדְּפוּAnd followedאַחֲרָיוafter him.שִׁמְעוֹןSimonוְהָאֲנָשִׁיםand theyאֲשֶׁרthat wereאִתּוֹ׃with him

    And Simon and they that were with him followed after him.

37. 37

    וַיִּמְצָאֻהוּAnd when they had found him,וַיֹּאמְרוּthey saidאֵלָיוunto him,הִנֵּהbehold,כֻלָּםAll menמְבַקְשִׁיםseek forאוֹתְךָ׃you.

    And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.

38. 38

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,לְכוּCome,וְנֵלְכָהlet us goאֶל־עָרֵיinto the townsהַפְּרָזוֹתof the villagesהַקְּרֹבוֹתnear by,וְאֶקְרָאthat I may preachגַם־שָׁםthere also:כִּיforבַעֲבוּר־זֹאתthereforeיָצָאתִי׃came I forth.

    And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.

39. 39

    וַיְהִיAndקֹרֵאhe preachedבִּכְנֵסִיּוֹתֵיהֶםin their synagoguesבְּכׇל־הַגָּלִילthroughout all Galilee,וַיְגָרֶשׁand cast outאֶת־הַשֵּׁדִים׃devils.

    And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.

40. 40

    וַיָּבוֹאAnd there cameאֵלָיוto himאִישׁa manמְצֹרָעa leper,וַיִּתְחַנֵּןbeseechingאֵלָיוhim,וַיִכְרַעand kneeling downעַל־בִּרְכָּיוto him,וַיֹּאמֶרand sayingלוֹunto him,אִם־תִּרְצֶהIf you will,תּוּכַלyou canלְטַהֲרֵנִי׃make me clean.

    And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

41. 41

    וַיְרַחֵםAnd moved with compassionעָלָיוon him,יֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיִּשְׁלַחput forthיָדוֹhis hand,וַיִּגַּע־בּוֹand touched him,וַיֹּאמַרand saith unto him,רֹצֶהwillingאָנֹכִיam I;טְהָר׃be you clean.

    And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.

42. 42

    עוֹדֶנּוּWhile he yetמְדַבֵּרspake,וְהַצָּרַעַתimmediately the leprosyסָרָהdepartedמִמֶּנּוּfrom him,וַיִּטְהָר׃and he was cleansed.

    And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.

43. 43

    וַיִּגְעַר־בּוֹAnd he straitly charged him,וַיְמַהֵרand forthwithלְהוֹצִיאוֹsent himהַחוּצָה׃out;

    And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;

44. 44

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saithאֵלָיוunto him,רְאֵהSeeאַל־תַּגִּידyou sayלְאִישׁto any manדָּבָרnothing:וְלֵךְbut go your way,הֵרָאֵהshew thyselfאֶל־הַכֹּהֵןto the priest,וְהַקְרֵבand offerלְטׇהֳרָתְךָfor your cleansingאֵת־אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּהthose things which commanded,משֶׁהMosesלְעֵדוּתfor a testimonyלָהֶם׃unto them.

    And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

45. 45

    וְהוּאBut heיָצָאwent out,וַיָּחֶלand beganלִקְרֹאto publish itהַרְבֵּהmuch,וּלְהַשְׁמִיעַand to blaze abroadהַדָּבָרthe matter,עַדinsomuch thatאֲשֶׁרthatלֹא־יָכֹלcould notלָבוֹאenterעוֹדany moreאֶל־עִירinto a cityלְעֵינֵיin the sight ofהָעָםthe people,וַיֵּשֶׁבbut wasמִחוּץwithoutלָעִירinבִּמְקֹמוֹתplaces:חׇרְבָּהdesertוַיָּבֹאוּand they cameאֵלָיוto himמִכׇּל־עֲבָרָיוfrom every quarterמִסָּבִיב׃round about.

    But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.
