1. 1

   וַיְהִיNow afterעוֹדyetיוֹמַיִםtwo daysוְחַגwas the feast ofהַפֶּסַחthe passover,וְהַמַּצּוֹתand of unleavened bread:בָּאapproached,וַיְבַקְשׁוּand soughtרָאשֵׁיthe chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַסּוֹפְרִיםand the scribesלְתָפְשׂוֹhow they might take himבְעׇרְמָהby craft,לַהֲמִיתוֹ׃and put him to death.

   After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּBut they said,לֹאNotבֶחָגon the feast day,פֶּן־תִּהְיֶהlest there beמְהוּמָהan uproarבָּעָם׃of the people.

   But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.

   וַיְהִיAndבִּהְיוֹתוֹbeingבְּבֵית־הִינִיin Bethanyבֵּיתin the house ofשִׁמְעוֹןSimonהַמְצֹרָעthe leper,וַיַּסֵּבas he satאֶל־הַשֻּׁלְחָןat the table,וַתָּבֹאthere cameאִשָּׁהa womanוּבְיָדָהּhavingפַּךְ־מִרְקַחַתan alabaster box of ointment ofנֵרְדְּspikenardזַךְpureוְיָקָרand precious;מְאֹדveryוַתִּשְׁבֹּרand she brakeאֶת־הַפַּךְthe box,וַתִּצֹּקand poured itעַל־רֹאשׁוֹ׃on his head.

   And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.

   וְיֵשׁAnd there wereאֲשֶׁרsome thatמִתְרָעֲמִיםhad indignationאִישׁwithinאֶל־רֵעֵהוּthemselves,לֵאמֹרand said,עַל־מֶהWhyהָיָהwasאִבּוּדwasteהַמֶּרְקָחָהof the ointmentהַזֹּאת׃this

   And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?

   כִּיForרְאוּיָהworthyהָיְתָהwas itזֹּאתthis,לְהִמָּכֵרto be soldבְּיוֹתֵרfor more thanמִשְּׁלשׁthreeמֵאוֹתhundredדִּינָרpence,וְלָתֵתand have been givenלָעֲנִיִּיםto the poor.וַיִּגְעֲרוּAnd they murmuredבָּהּ׃against her.

   For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.

6. 6

   וַיֹּאמֶרAnd said,יֵשׁוּעַJesusהַנִּיחוּLet aloneלָהּher;לָמָּהwhyתַלְאוּtrouble youנַפְשָׁהּher?מַעֲשֶׂהa workטוֹבgoodעָשְׂתָהshe hath wroughtעִמָּדִי׃on me.

   And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.

7. 7

   כִּיForהָעֲנִיִּיםthe poorתָּמִידalways,עִמָּכֶםyou have with youוּכְשֶׁתִּרְצוּand whensoever you willתּוּכְלוּyou mayלְהֵיטִיבdo goodלָהֶםto them:וְאָנֹכִיbut meלֹא־אֶהְיֶהI am notאִתְּכֶםwith youתָּמִיד׃always.

   For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.

8. 8

   אֵת־אֲשֶׁרwhatהָיָהwasלְאֵלin the power ofיָדָהּher hand,עָשָׂתָהshe hath done:קִדְּמָהshe is come aforehandלָסוּךְto anointאֶת־גּוּפִיmy bodyלִקְבוּרָתוֹ׃to the burying.

   She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.

   אָמֵןVerilyאֹמֵרsayאֲנִיIלָכֶםunto you,כִּיthatבַּאֲשֶׁרWheresoeverתִּקָּרֵאshall be preachedהַבְּשׂוֹרָהgospelהַזֹּאתthisאֶל־כׇּל־הָעוֹלָםthroughout the whole world,גַּםalsoאֶת־אֲשֶׁרthat whichעָשְׂתָהhath doneהִיאshe,יְסֻפַּרshall be spoken ofלְזִכָּרוֹןfor a memorialלָהּ׃of her.

   Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

    וִיהוּדָהAnd Judasאִישׁ־קְרִיּוֹתIscariot,אֶחָדoneמִשְּׁנֵים־הָעָשָׂרof the twelve,הָלַךְwentאֶל־רָאשֵׁיunto the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriests,לִמְסֹרto betrayאוֹתוֹhimאֲלֵיהֶם׃unto them.

    And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.

11. 11

    וְהֵםAndכְּשׇׁמְעָםwhen they heard it,שָׂמְחוּthey were glad,וַיֹּאמְרוּand promisedלָתֶת־לוֹto give himכָסֶףmoney.וַיְבַקֵּשׁAnd he soughtתֹּאֲנָהhow he might convenientlyלְמָסְרוֹ׃betray him.

    And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.

12. 12

    וַיְהִיAndבְּחַגin the feastהַמַּצּוֹתof unleavened bread,בַּיּוֹםthe dayהָרִאשׁוֹןfirstאֲשֶׁרwhenיִזָּבַחthey killedהַפֶּסַחthe passover,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaidאֵלָיוunto him,תַּלְמִידָיוhis disciplesאֵיפֹהWhereתַחְפֹּץwill youלֶאֱכֹלeatאֶת־הַפֶּסַחthe passover?וְנֵלְכָהthat we goוְנָכִין׃and prepare that you mayest

    And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?

13. 13

    וַיִּשְׁלַחAnd he sendeth forthשְׁנַיִםtwoמִתַּלְמִידָיוof his disciples,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,לְכוּGo youהָעִירָהinto the city,וּפָגַעand there shall meetאֶתְכֶםyouאִישׁa manנֹשֵׂאbearingצַפַּחַתa pitcher ofמָיִםwater:לְכוּfollowאַחֲרָיו׃him.

    And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.

14. 14

    וּבַאֲשֶׁרAnd wheresoeverיָבוֹאhe shall go inשָׁמָּהthither,אִמְרוּsay youלְבַעַלto the goodman ofהַבָּיִתthe house,כֹּהThusאָמַרsaith,הָרַבThe MasterאַיֵּהWhere isהַמָּלוֹןthe guestchamber,אֲשֶׁרwhereאֹכַלI shall eatשָׁםthereאֶת־הַפֶּסַחthe passoverעִם־תַּלְמִידָי׃with my disciples?

    And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?

15. 15

    וְהוּאAnd heיַרְאֶהwill shewאֶתְכֶםyouעֲלִיָּהupper roomגְדוֹלָהa largeמֻצָּעָהfurnishedוּמוּכָנָהand prepared:וְשָׁםthereהָכִינוּmake readyלָנוּ׃for us.

    And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.

16. 16

    וַיֵּצְאוּAnd went forth,תַלְמִידָיוhis disciplesוַיָּבֹאוּand cameהָעִירָהinto the city,וַיִּמְצְאוּand foundכַּאֲשֶׁרasאָמַרhe had saidלָהֶםunto them:וַיָּכִינוּand they made readyאֶת־הַפָּסַח׃the passover.

    And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

17. 17

    וַיְהִיAndבָּעָרֶבin the eveningוַיָּבֹאhe comethעִם־שְׁנֵים־הֶעָשָׂר׃with the twelve.

    And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.

18. 18

    וַיַּסֵּבּוּAnd as they satוַיֹּאכֵלוּand did eat,וַיֹּאמֶרsaid,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאָמֵןVerilyאֹמֵרsayאֲנִיIלָכֶםunto you,אֶחָדOneמִכֶּםof youיִמְסְרֵנִיshall betray me,וְהוּאeven he,אֹכֵלwhich eatethאִתִּי׃with me.

    And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.

19. 19

    וַיָּחֵלּוּAnd they beganלְהִתְעַצֵּבto be sorrowful,וַיֹּאמְרוּand to sayאֵלָיוunto himזֶהoneאַחַרbyזֶהone,הֲכִיIs itאֲנִיI?הוּא׃and another said, Is it I?

    And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?

20. 20

    וַיַּעַןAnd he answeredוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אֶחָדIt is oneמִשְּׁנֵים־הֶעָשָׂרof the twelve,הוּאthatהַטֹּבֵלdippethעִמִּיwith meבַּקְּעָרָה׃in the dish.

    And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.

21. 21

    הֵןBehold,בֶּן־הָאָדָםThe Son of manהָלֹךְsurelyיֵלֵךְindeed goeth,כַּכָּתוּבas it is writtenעָלָיוof him:אֲבָלbutאוֹיwoeלָאִישׁto the manהַהוּאthat,אֲשֶׁרby whomעַל־יָדוֹby his handיִמָּסֵרis betrayed!בֶּן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manטוֹבgoodלָאִישׁwere it for that manהַהוּאthat,שֶׁלּאif he had neverנוֹלָד׃been born.

    The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.

22. 22

    וַיְהִיAndבְאָכְלָםas they did eat,וַיִּקַּחtookיֵשׁוּעַJesusלֶחֶםbread,וַיְבָרֶךְand blessed,וַיִּבְצַעand brake it,וַיִּתֵּןand gaveלָהֶםto them,וַיֹּאמַרand said,קְחוּTake,אִכְלוּeat:זֶהthisהוּאisגּוּפִי׃my body.

    And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.

23. 23

    וַיִּקַּחAnd he tookאֶת־הַכּוֹסthe cup,וַיְבָרֶךְand when he had given thanks,וַיִּתֵּןhe gave itלָהֶםto them:וַיִּשְׁתּוּand they drankמִמֶּנָּהof itכֻּלָּם׃all.

    And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.

24. 24

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidלָהֶםunto them,זֶהThis isדָמִיmy bloodדַּם־הַבְּרִיתof the testamentהָחֲדָשָׁהnew,הַנִּשְׁפָּךְwhich is shedבְּעַדforרַבִּים׃many.

    And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

25. 25

    אָמֵןVerilyאֹמֵרsayאֲנִיIלָכֶםunto you,שָׁתֹהat all,לֹא־אֶשְׁתֶּהI will drink noעוֹדmoreמִפְּרִיof the fruit ofהַגֶּפֶןthe vine,עַד־הַיּוֹםuntil the dayהַהוּאthat,אֲשֶׁרwhenאֶשְׁתֶּהI drinkאֹתוֹitחָדָשׁnewבְּמַלְכוּתin the kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

26. 26

    וְאַחֲרֵיAnd whenקׇרְאָםthey had sungאֶת־הַהַלֵּלan hymn,וַיֵּצְאוּthey went outאֶל־הַרinto the mount ofהַזֵּיתִים׃Olives.

    And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

27. 27

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאַתֶּםyouכֻּלְּכֶםAllתִּכָּשְׁלוּshall be offendedבִיbecause of meבַּלַּיְלָהnight:הַזֶּהthisכִּיforכָתוּבit is written,אַכֶּהI will smiteאֶת־הָרֹעֶהthe shepherd,וּתְפוּצֶיןָand shall be scattered.הַצֹּאן׃the sheep

    And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.

28. 28

    אַךְButאַחֲרֵיafter thatקוּמִיI am risen,מִן־הַמֵּתִיםfrom the dead,אֵלֵךְI will goלִפְנֵיכֶםbefore youהַגָּלִילָה׃into Galilee.

    But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.

29. 29

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֵלָיוunto him,פֶּטְרוֹסPeterגַּםAlthoughאִם־יִכָּשְׁלוּshall be offended,כֻלָּםallאֲנִיyet Iלֹאwill notאֶכָּשֵׁל׃be offended.

    But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.

30. 30

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saithאֵלָיוunto him,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאָמֵןVerilyאֹמֵרsayאֲנִיIלְךָunto you,כִּיThatהַיּוֹםthis day,בַּלַּיְלָהeven in night,הַזֶּהthisבְּטֶרֶםbeforeיִקְרָאcrowהַתַּרְנְגוֹלthe cockפַּעֲמָיִםtwice,אַתָּהyouתְכַחֶשׁ־בִּיshalt deny meשָׁלשׁthreeפְּעָמִים׃times.

    And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

31. 31

    וְהוּאBut heהִתְאַמֵּץspake the more vehemently,וַיּוֹסֶףand againלְדַבֵּרhe spakeוַיֹּאמֶרand said,גַּםIfכִּי־יִהְיֶהshouldעָלַיIלָמוּתdieאִתְּךָwith you,כַּחֵשׁI will notלֹא־אֲכַחֵשׁdeny youבָּךְin any wise.וְכֵןLikewiseאָמְרוּsaidגַּם־כֻּלָּם׃they all.

    But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.

32. 32

    וַיָּבֹאוּAnd they cameאֶל־חָצֵרto a placeאַחַתcertain,וּשְׁמָהּwhich was namedגַּת־שְׁמָנֵיGethsemane:וַיֹּאמֶרand he saithאֶל־תַּלְמִידָיוto his disciples,שְׁבוּ־לָכֶםSit youפֹּהhere,עַדwhileאֲשֶׁרthatאֶתְפַּלָּל׃I shall pray.

    And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.

33. 33

    וַיִּקַּחAnd he takethאִתּוֹwith himאֶת־פֶּטְרוֹסPeterוְאֶת־יַעֲקֹבand Jamesוְאֶת־יוֹחָנָןand John,וַיָּחֶלand beganלְהִשְׁתּוֹמֵםto be sore amazed,וְלָמוּג׃and to be very heavy;

    And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;

34. 34

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,נַפְשִׁיMy soulמָרָה־לִיis exceeding sorrowfulעַד־מָוֶתunto death:עִמְדוּ־פֹהtarry you here,וּשְׁקֹדוּ׃and watch.

    And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.

35. 35

    וַיַּעֲבֹרAnd he went forwardמְעַטa littleמִשָּׁםfrom thenceוָהָלְאָהforward,וַיִּפֹּלand fellאַרְצָהon the ground,וַיִּתְפַּלֵּלand prayedאֲשֶׁרthat,אִם־יוּכַלif it were possible,הֱיוֹתit might be,תַּעֲבֹרmight passמֵעָלָיוfrom himהַשָּׁעָהthe hourהַזֹּאת׃this.

    And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

36. 36

    וַיֹּאמַרAnd he said,אַבָּאAbba,אָבִיFather,כֹּלall thingsתּוּכַלare possible unto you;הַעֲבֶר־נָאtake awayמֵעָלַיfrom me:אֶת־הַכּוֹסcupהַזֹּאתthisאַךְ־לֹאnevertheless notאֶת־אֲשֶׁרwhatאֲנִיIרוֹצֶהwill,כִּיbutאִם־אֵתwhatאֲשֶׁר־אָתָּה׃you will.

    And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

37. 37

    וַיָּבֹאAnd he cometh,וַיִּמְצָאֵםand findeth themיְשֵׁנִיםsleeping,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֶל־פֶּטְרוֹסunto Peter,שִׁמְעוֹןSimon,הֲתִישַׁןsleepest you?הֲכִי־לֹאcould you notיָכֹלְתָּbe ableלִשְׁקֹדto watchשָׁעָהhour?אֶחָת׃one

    And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?

38. 38

    שִׁקְדוּWatch youוְהִתְפַּלֲּלוּand pray,פֶּן־תָּבֹאוּlest you enterלִידֵיintoנִסָּיוֹןtemptation.הֵןBehold,הָרוּחַThe spiritהִיאtrulyחֲפֵצָהis ready,וְהַבָּשָׂרbut the fleshרָפֶה׃is weak.

    Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

39. 39

    וַיֹּסֶףAnd againלָסוּרhe went away,וַיִּתְפַּלֵּלand prayed,בְּאׇמְרוֹand spakeעוֹד־הַפַּעַםagain,כַּדְּבָרִיםthe sameהָהֵמָּה׃words.

    And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.

40. 40

    וַיָּשׇׁבAnd when he returned,וַיִּמְצָאֵםhe found themשֵׁנִיתagainיְשֵׁנִיםasleep,כִּי(forעֵינֵיהֶםtheir eyesכְּבֵדוֹתwere heavy,)וְלֹאneitherיָדְעוּwist theyמַה־יַּעֲנֻהוּ׃what to answer him.

    And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.

41. 41

    וַיָּבֹאAnd he comethפַּעַםa timeשְׁלִישִׁיתthe third,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,נוּמוּSleep onעוֹדnow,וְנוּחוּand take your rest:רַב־לִיit is enough,כִּי־בָאָהis come;הַשָּׁעָהthe hourהִנֵּהbehold,בֶן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manנִמְסָרis betrayedבִּידֵיinto the hands ofחַטָּאִים׃sinners.

    And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42. 42

    קוּמוּRise up,וְנֵלֵכָהlet us go;הִנֵּהlo,הַמּוֹסֵרhe that betrayethאוֹתִיmeקָרֵב׃is at hand.

    Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

43. 43

    עוֹדֶנּוּAnd immediately, while heמְדַבֵּרyet spake,וִיהוּדָהcometh Judas,בָאhe came,וְהוּאbeingאֶחָדoneמִשְּׁנֵים־הֶעָשָׂרof the twelve,וְעִמּוֹand with himהָמוֹןa multitudeרַבgreatבַּחֲרָבוֹתwith swordsוּבְמַקְלוֹתand staves,מֵאֵתfromרָאשֵׁיthe chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַסּוֹפְרִיםand the scribesוְהַזְּקֵנִים׃and the elders.

    And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

44. 44

    וְהַמּוֹסֵרAnd he that betrayedאֹתוֹhimנָתַןhad givenלָהֶםthemאוֹתa token,לֵאמֹרsaying,הָאִישׁWhomsoeverאֲשֶׁרwhomאֶשָּׁקֵהוּI shall kiss,זֶהthatהוּאsame is he;תִּפְשׂוּtakeאֹתוֹhim,וְהוֹלִיכֻהוּand lead him awayאַל־יִמָּלֵט׃safely.

    And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.

45. 45

    הוּאAnd as soon asבָאhe was come,וְהוּאheנִגַּשׁgoeth straightwayאֵלָיוto him,וַיֹּאמֶרand saith,רַבִּיMaster,רַבִּיmaster;וַיְנַשֶּׁק־לוֹ׃and kissed him.

    And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.

46. 46

    וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ־בוֹAnd they laidאֶת־יְדֵיהֶםtheir hands on him,וַיִּתְפְּשֻׂהוּ׃and took him.

    And they laid their hands on him, and took him.

47. 47

    וְאֶחָדAnd oneמִן־הָעֹמְדִיםof them that stood byאֶצְלוֹbeside himשָׁלַףdrewאֶת־חַרְבּוֹa sword,וַיַּךְand smoteאֶת־עֶבֶדa servant ofהַכֹּהֵןthe highהַגָּדוֹלpriest,וַיְקַצֵּץand cut offאֶת־אׇזְנוֹ׃his ear.

    And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

48. 48

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,כְּצֵאתasעַל־פָּרִיץagainst a thief,יְצָאתֶםare you come outעָלַיagainst meבַּחֲרָבוֹתwith swordsוּבְמַקְלוֹתand with stavesלְתָפְשֵׂנִי׃to take me?

    And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me?

49. 49

    וַאֲנִיIיוֹםdayיוֹםby day,הָיִיתִיwasאֶצְלְכֶםwith youמְלַמֵּדteachingבַּמִּקְדָּשׁin the temple,וְלֹאandהֶחֱזַקְתֶּםyou tookבִּיme not:אֲבָלbutלְמַעַןthatמְלֹאתmight be fulfilledדִּבְרֵיthe words ofהַכְּתוּבִים׃the scriptures.

    I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.

50. 50

    וַיַּעַזְבוּAnd forsookאֹתוֹhim,כֻּלָּםthey allוַיָּנוּסוּ׃and fled.

    And they all forsook him, and fled.

51. 51

    וְנַעַרAnd a young manאֶחָדcertainהָלַךְfollowedאַחֲרָיוafter him,מְעֻטָּףhavingבְּסָדִיןa linen clothלְכַסּוֹתcast aboutאֶת־עֶרְוָתוֹhis naked body;וַיֹּאחֲזֻהוּand laid hold on him:הַנְּעָרִים׃the young men

    And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:

52. 52

    וַיַּעֲזֹבAnd he leftאֶת־הַסָּדִיןthe linen cloth,בְּיָדָםin their hand,וַיָּנׇסand fledמִפְּנֵיהֶםfrom themעָרֹם׃naked.

    And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

53. 53

    וַיּוֹלִיכוּAnd they ledאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesus awayאֶל־הַכֹּהֵןto the highהַגָּדוֹלpriest:וַיִּקָּהֲלוּand with him were assembledאֵלָיוunto himכׇּל־רָאשֵׁיall the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַזְּקֵנִיםand the eldersוְהַסּוֹפְרִים׃and the scribes.

    And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

54. 54

    וּפֶטְרוֹסAnd Peterהָלַךְfollowedאַחֲרָיוhimמֵרָחוֹקafar off,עַד־לַחֲצַרeven into the palace ofהַכֹּהֵןthe highהַגָּדוֹלpriest:פְּנִימָהwithin:וַיֵּשֶׁבand he satשָׁםthereעִם־הַמְּשָׁרֲתִיםwith the servants,וַיִּתְחַמֵּםand warmed himselfנֶגֶדatהָאוּר׃the fire.

    And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.

55. 55

    וְרָאשֵׁיAnd the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְכׇל־הַסַּנְהֶדְרִיןand all the councilבִּקְשׁוּsoughtעֵדוּתfor witnessעַל־יֵשׁוּעַagainst Jesusלַהֲמִיתוֹto put him to death;וְלֹאandמָצָאוּ׃found none.

    And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.

56. 56

    כִּיForרַבִּיםmanyעָנוּbare witnessבוֹagainst him,עֵדוּתwitnessשָׁקֶרfalse,אֲבָלbutלֹאnotהָיוּwereדִּבְרֵיהֶםtheir wordsמְכֻוָּנִים׃agreeing together.

    For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.

57. 57

    וַיָּקוּמוּAnd there aroseאֲנָשִׁיםcertain,וַיַּעֲנוּand bareבוֹagainst him,עֵדוּתwitnessשָׁקֶרfalse,לֵאמֹר׃saying,

    And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,

58. 58

    שָׁמַעְנוּWe heardאֹתוֹhimאֹמֵרsay,אֲנִיIאֶהֱרֹסwill destroyאֶת־הַהֵיכׇלtempleהַזֶּהthisמַעֲשֵׂהmade withיְדֵיthe hands ofאָדָםman,וְלִשְׁלשֶׁתand within threeיָמִיםdaysאֶבְנֶהI will buildהֵיכׇלa templeאַחֵרanother,אֲשֶׁרwhich isאֵינֶנּוּnotמַעֲשֵׂהmade withיְדֵיthe hands ofאָדָם׃man.

    We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.

59. 59

    וְגַם־בָּזֹאתBut neither soלֹאnotהָיְתָהdidעֵדוּתָםtheir witnessמְכֻוָּנֶת׃agree together.

    But neither so did their witness agree together.

60. 60

    וַיָּקׇםAnd stood upהַכֹּהֵןthe highהַגָּדוֹלpriestוַיַּעֲמֹדand stoodבַּתָּוֶךְin the midst,וַיִּשְׁאַלand askedאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesus,לֵאמֹרsaying,הָאֵינְךָDo you notמֵשִׁיבanswerדָּבָרnothing?מַה־זֶּהwhat is it whichאֵלֶּהtheseעֹנִיםwitnessבָּךְ׃against you?

    And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?

61. 61

    וְהוּאBut heהֶחֱרִישׁheld his peace,וְלֹאandהֵשִׁיבansweredדָּבָרnothing.וַיּוֹסֶףAnd againעוֹדyetהַכֹּהֵןthe highהַגָּדוֹלpriestלִשְׁאֹלaskedאֹתוֹhim,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,הַאַתָּהAre youהוּאheהַמָּשִׁיחַthe Christ,בֶּן־הַמְבֹרָךְ׃the Son of the Blessed?

    But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?

62. 62

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd said,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאֲנִיIהוּאam:וְאַתֶּםand youתִּרְאוּshall seeאֶת־בֶּן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manיוֹשֵׁבsittingלִימִיןon the right hand ofהַגְּבוּרָהpower,וּבָאand comingעִם־עַנֲנֵיin the clouds ofהַשָּׁמָיִם׃heaven.

    And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

63. 63

    וַיִּקְרַעThen rentהַכֹּהֵןthe highהַגָּדוֹלpriestאֶת־בְּגָדָיוhis clothes,וַיֹּאמַרand saith,מַה־לָּנוּWhat need weעוֹדany furtherלְבַקֵּשׁto seekעֵדִים׃witnesses?

    Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?

64. 64

    הִנֵּהBehold,שְׁמַעְתֶּםYou have heardאֶת־הַגִּדּוּףthe blasphemy:מַה־דַּעְתְּכֶםwhat think you?וַיַּרְשִׁיעֻהוּAnd they condemned himכֻלָּםall,כִּי־חַיַּבto be guiltyמִיתָהof deathהוּא׃is he.

    Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.

65. 65

    וַיָּחֵלּוּAnd beganמֵהֶםsomeלָרֹקto spitבּוֹon him,וַיְחַפּוּand to coverאֶת־פָּנָיוhis face,וַיַּכֻּהוּand to buffet himבְאֶגְרֹףwith fists,וַיֹּאמְרוּand to sayאֵלָיוunto him,הִנָּבֵאProphesy:וְהַמְשָׁרֲתִיםand the servantsאֲחָזֻהוּdid strike himבְּמַכּוֹתwith blowsעַל־הַלֶּחִי׃on the cheek.

    And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.

66. 66

    וַיְהִיAndבִּהְיוֹתas wasפֶּטְרוֹסPeterבְּתַחְתִּיתbeneathהֶחָצֵרin the palace,וַתָּבֹאthere comethאַחַתoneמִשִּׁפְחוֹתof the maids ofהַכֹּהֵןthe highהַגָּדוֹל׃priest:

    And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:

67. 67

    וַתֵּרֶאAnd when she sawאֶת־פֶּטְרוֹסPeterכִּיasמִתְחַמֵּםwarmingהוּאhimself,וַתַּבֶּט־בּוֹshe looked upon him,וַתֹּאמַרand said,גַּם־אַתָּהAnd you alsoהָיִיתָwastעִם־הַנָּצְרִיwith of Nazareth.יֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus

    And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.

68. 68

    וַיְכַחֵשׁBut he denied,וַיֹּאמֶרsaying,לֹאIאֵדַעknow not,וְלֹאneitherאָבִיןunderstand Iמָהwhatאַתְּyouאֹמָרֶתsayest.וַיֵּצֵאAnd he wentהַחוּצָהoutאֶל־הָאוּלָםinto the porch;וַיִּקְרָאand crew.הַתַּרְנְגֹל׃the cock

    But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.

69. 69

    וַתִּרְאֵהוּAnd saw himהַשִּׁפְחָהa maidוַתֹּאמֶרand began to sayעוֹדagain,אֶל־הָעֹמְדִיםto them that stood by,שָׁםthere,זֶהThisהוּאisאֶחָדoneמֵהֶם׃of them.

    And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.

70. 70

    וַיְכַחֵשׁAnd he denied itפַּעַםaשֵׁנִיתsecond time.וּמְעַטAndאַחֲרֵי־כֵןa little after,גַּם־הָעֹמְדִיםthey that stood byשָׁםthereאָמְרוּsaidאֶל־פֶּטְרוֹסto Peter,אׇמְנָםSurelyאַתָּהyou areאֶחָדoneמֵהֶםof them:כִּיforאַף־גְּלִילִיa Galilaeanאַתָּהyou are,וּלְשׁוֹנְךָand your speechכִּלְשׁוֹנָם׃agreeth thereto.

    And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilæan, and thy speech agreeth thereto.

71. 71

    וַיָּחֶלBut he beganלְהַחֲרִיםto curseאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹhimselfוּלְהִשָּׁבֵעַand to swear,לֵאמֹרsaying,לֹאIיָדַעְתִּיknow notאֶת־הָאִישׁmanהַזֶּהthisאֲשֶׁרwhomדִּבַּרְתֶּם׃you speak of.

    But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.

72. 72

    וְהַתַּרְנְגֹלAnd the cockקָרָאcrewפַּעַםaשֵׁנִיתsecond time.וַיִּזְכֹּרAnd called to mindפֶּטְרוֹסPeterאֶת־הַדָּבָרthe wordאֲשֶׁרthatאָמַר־לוֹsaid unto him,יֵשׁוּעַJesusבְּטֶרֶםBeforeיִקְרָאcrowהַתַּרְנְגֹלthe cockפַּעֲמַיִםtwice,תְּכַחֵשׁyou shall denyבִּיmeשָׁלשׁthreeפְּעָמִיםtimes.וַיָּשֶׂםAnd when he setעַל־לִבּוֹit on his heart,וַיֵּבְךְּ׃he wept.

    And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.
