    וַיָּחֶלAnd he beganלְדַבֵּרto speakאֲלֵיהֶםunto themבִּמְשָׁלִיםby parables.לֵאמֹרsaying,אִישׁA manאֶחָדcertainנָטַעplantedכֶּרֶםa vineyard,וַיַּעַשׂand setגָּדֵרan hedgeסָבִיבabout it,וַיַּחְצֹבand diggedיֶקֶבa place for the winefat,וַיִּבֶןand builtמִגְדָּלa tower,וַיִּתְּנֵהוּand let it outאֶל־כֹּרְמִיםto husbandmen,וַיֵּלֶךְand wentלְמֶרְחַקִּים׃into a far country.

    And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.

    וְלַמּוֹעֵדAnd at the seasonשָׁלַחhe sentעֶבֶדa servant,אֶל־הַכֹּרְמִיםto the husbandmenלָקַחַתthat he might receiveמֵאֵתfromהַכֹּרְמִיםthe husbandmenמִפְּרִיof the fruit ofהַכָּרֶם׃the vineyard.

    And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.

    וַיֹּאחֲזֻהוּAnd they caught him,וַיַּכֻּהוּand beat him,וַיְשַׁלְּחֻהוּand sent him awayרֵיקָם׃empty.

    And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.

  4. 4

    וַיֹּסֶףAnd againלִשְׁלֹחַhe sentאֲלֵיהֶםunto themעֶבֶדservant;אַחֵרanotherוְאֹתוֹand at himסָקְלוּthey stonedבָאֲבָנִיםwith stones,וּandמָחֲצוּwoundedרֹאשׁוֹin the head,וַיְשַׁלְּחֻהוּand sent him awayבְּחֶרְפָּה׃shamefully handled.

    And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled.

    וַיֹּסֶףAnd againוַיִּשְׁלַחhe sentאַחֵרanother;וְגַם־אֹתוֹand himהָרָגוּthey killed,וְכֵןand soעָשׂוּdid theyלְרַבִּיםto manyאֲחֵרִיםothers;מֵהֶםsome of themהִכּוּthey beat,וּמֵהֶםand some of themהָרָגוּ׃they killed.

    And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some.

    וְלוֹHaving thereforeעוֹדyetבֵּןa son,יָחִידoneאֲשֶׁרwhom wasאֲהֵבוֹhis wellbeloved,וַיִּשְׁלַחhe sentגַּם־אֹתוֹhim alsoאֲלֵיהֶםunto themבָּאַחֲרֹנָהlast,כִּי־אָמַרsaying,מִפְּנֵיbeforeבְנִיmy sonיָגוּרוּ׃they will reverence.

    Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.

    וְהַכֹּרְמִיםBut those husbandmenהָהֵםthose,אָמְרוּsaidאִישׁamongאֶל־רֵעֵהוּthemselves,הִנֵּה־זֶהThis isהוּאheהַיּוֹרֵשׁthe heir;לְכוּcome,וְנַהַרְגֵהוּlet us kill him,וְהַיְרֻשָּׁהand the inheritanceתִּהְיֶהshall beלָּנוּ׃ours.

    But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.

    וַיֹּאחֲזֻהוּAnd they took him,וַיַּהַרְגוּand killedאוֹתוֹhim,וַיַּשְׁלִיכֻהוּand cast him outאֶל־מִחוּץout ofלַכָּרֶם׃the vineyard.

    And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.

    וְעַתָּהWhat shall thereforeמַה־יַּעֲשֶׂהdoבַּעַלthe lord ofהַכָּרֶםthe vineyard?הֲלֹאshall he notיָבוֹאcomeוִיאַבֵּדand destroyאֶת־הַכֹּרְמִיםthe husbandmen,הָהֵםthose,וְנָתַןand will giveאֶת־הַכֶּרֶםthe vineyardלַאֲחֵרִים׃unto others.

    What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.

    הֲלֹאAnd have you notקְרָאתֶםreadאֶת־הַכָּתוּבscripture;הַזֶּהthisאֶבֶןThe stoneמָאֲסוּrejectedהַבּוֹנִיםwhich the buildersהָיְתָהis becomeלְרֹאשׁthe head ofפִּנָּה׃the corner:

    And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:

    מֵאֵתfromיְהוָֹהthe LORDהָיְתָהwasזֹּאתthis,הִיאand itנִפְלָאתis marvelousבְּעֵינֵינוּ׃in our eyes?

    This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

  12. 12

    וַיְבַקְשׁוּAnd they soughtלְתָפְשׂוֹto lay hold on him,וַיִּירְאוּbut fearedמִפְּנֵיbecause ofהָעָםthe people:יַעַןforאֲשֶׁר־הֵבִינוּthey knewכִּיthatעֲלֵיהֶםagainst them:דִּבֶּרhe had spokenאֶת־הַמָּשָׁלthe parableהַזֶּהthis,וַיַּנִּיחֻהוּand they left him,וַיֵּלֵכוּ׃and went their way.

    And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.

    וַיִּשְׁלְחוּAnd they sendאֵלָיוunto himאֲנָשִׁיםcertainמִן־הַפְּרוּשִׁיםof the Phariseesוּמֵאַנְשֵׁיand ofהוֹרְדוֹסthe Herodians,לִתְפֹּשׂto catchאֹתוֹhimבִּדְבָרוֹ׃in his words.

    And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words.

    וַיָּבֹאוּAnd when they were come,וַיֹּאמְרוּthey sayאֵלָיוunto him,רַבִּיMaster,יָדַעְנוּwe knowכִּי־אִישׁthat a manאֱמֶתof truthאַתָּהyou are,וְלֹא־תָגוּרand carest notמִפְּנֵיforאִישׁany man:כִּיforלֹאnotתִּשָׂאyou regardestפְּנֵיthe person ofאִישׁmen,וּבֶאֱמֶתbut in truthמוֹרֶהteachestאַתָּהyouאֶת־דֶּרֶךְthe way ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod:הֲנָכוֹןIs it lawfulלָתֵתto giveמַסtributeאֶל־קֵיסָרto Caesar,אִם־לֹאor not?הֲנִּתֵּןShall we give,אִם־לֹאor shall we notנִתֵּן׃give?

    And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Cæsar, or not?

    וְהוּאBut he,יָדַעknowingאֶת־חֲנֻפָּתָםtheir hypocrisy,וַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,מַה־תְּנַסּוּנִיWhy tempt you me?הָבִיאוּbringאֵלַיmeדִּינָרa penny,וְאֶרְאֶה׃that I may see it.

    Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.

    וַיָּבִיאוּAnd they brought it.וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הַצּוּרָהimageהַזֹּאתthisוְהַמִּכְתָּבand superscriptionאֲשֶׁרwhichעָלָיוare upon it,שֶׁל־מִיwhoseהֵםare they?וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they saidאֵלָיוunto him,שֶׁל־קֵיסָר׃Caesar's.

    And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Cæsar's.

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeringיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אֵת־אֲשֶׁרthe things that areלְקֵיסָרCaesar's,תְּנוּRenderלְקֵיסָרto Caesarוְאֵתandאֲשֶׁרthe things that areלֵאלֹהִיםGod's.תְּנוּrenderלֵאלֹהִיםto GodוַיִּתְמְהוּAnd they marvelledעָלָיו׃at him.

    And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Cæsar the things that are Cæsar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.

  18. 18

    וַיָּבֹאוּThen comeאֵלָיוunto himמִן־הַצְדּוּקִיםthe Sadducees,הָאֹמְרִיםwhich sayאֵיןthere is noתְּחִיַּתresurrection ofהַמֵּתִיםthe dead;וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּand they asked him,לֵאמֹר׃saying,

    Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

    רַבִּיMaster,משֶׁהMosesכָּתַבwroteלָנוּunto us,כִּיIfיָמוּתdie,אֲחִי־אִישׁa man's brotherוְהִנִּיחַand leaveאִשָּׁהhis wife behind him,וּבָנִיםand childrenאֵיןnoלוֹto him,וְלָקַחthat should takeאָחִיוhis brotherאֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹhis wife,וְהֵקִיםand raise upזֶרַעseedלְאָחִיו׃unto his brother.

    Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

  20. 20

    וְהִנֵּהNow there wereשִׁבְעָהsevenאַחִיםbrethren:וַיִּקַּחand tookהָרִאשׁוֹןthe firstאִשָּׁהa wife,וַיָּמׇתand dyingוְלֹא־הִשְׁאִירleft notאַחֲרָיוbehind himזָרַע׃seed.

    Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed.

  21. 21

    וַיִּקַּחAnd tookאֹתָהּher,הַשֵּׁנִיthe secondוַיָּמׇתand died,וְלֹא־הִנִּיחַneither left heזָרַעany seed:וְכֵןlikewise.גַּםandהַשְּׁלִישִׁי׃the third

    And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise.

  22. 22

    וַיִּקָּחוּהָAnd had her,כׇּל־הַשִּׁבְעָהthe sevenוְלֹא־הִשְׁאִירוּand left notאַחֲרֵיהֶםbehind themזָרַעseed:וְאַחֲרֹנָהand lastלְכֻלָּםof allמֵתָהdiedגַּםalsoהָאִשָּׁה׃the woman.

    And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also.

  23. 23

    וְעַתָּהtherefore,בִּתְחִיַּתIn the resurrection ofהַמֵּתִיםthe dead,כְּשֶׁיָּקוּמוּwhen they shall rise,לְמִיwhoseמֵהֶםof themתִּהְיֶהshall she beלְאִשָּׁהwifeכִּיforלַשִּׁבְעָהthe sevenהָיְתָהhad herלְאִשָּׁה׃to wife.

    In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.

  24. 24

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd answering saidיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הֲלֹאDo you not thereforeטֹעִיםerrאַתֶּםyou,בַּאֲשֶׁרbecauseלֹאnotיְדַעְתֶּםyou knowאֶת־הַכְּתוּבִיםthe scriptures,וְלֹאneitherאֶת־גְּבוּרַתthe power ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God?

    And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?

  25. 25

    כִּיForבְּעֵתwhenקוּמָםthey shall riseמִן־הַמֵּתִיםfrom the dead,לֹאthey neitherיִשְׂאוּtakeנָשִׁיםwives,וְלֹאnorתִּנָּשֶׂאנָהare given in marriage;כִּי־יִהְיוּbut areכְּמַלְאֲכֵיas the angelsהַשָּׁמָיִם׃which are in heaven.

    For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.

  26. 26

    וְעַל־דְּבַרAnd as touchingהַמֵּתִיםthe dead,שֶׁיָּקוּמוּthat they rise:הֲלֹאhave you notקְרָאתֶםreadבְּסֵפֶרin the book ofמשֶׁהMoses,בַּסְּנֶהhow in the bushאֶת־אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּרspakeאֵלָיוunto him,הָאֱלֹהִיםGodלֵאמֹרsaying,אָנֹכִיI amאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofאַבְרָהָםAbraham,וֵאלֹהֵיand the God ofיִצְחָקIsaac,וֵאלֹהֵיand the God ofיַעֲקֹב׃Jacob?

    And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

  27. 27

    הָאֱלֹהִיםHe isאֵינֶנּוּnotאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofהַמֵּתִיםthe dead,כִּיbutאִם־אֱלֹהֵיthe God ofהַחַיִּיםthe living:לָכֵןyou thereforeטוֹעִיםdo errאַתֶּםyou,הַרְבֵּה׃greatly.

    He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.

  28. 28

    וְאֶחָדAnd oneמִן־הַסּוֹפְרִיםof the scribesשָׁמַעcame, and having heardאֹתָםthemמִתְוַכְּחִיםreasoning together,וַיִּקְרַבand came nearאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,וַיַּרְאand perceivingכִּיthatהֵיטֵבwell,הֱשִׁיבָםhe had answered themוַיִּשְׁאָלֵהוּasked him,מַה־הִיאWhich isהָרִאשֹׁנָהthe firstלְכׇל־הַמִּצְוֹת׃commandment of all?

    And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

  29. 29

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeredאֹתוֹhim,יֵשׁוּעַJesusהָרִאשֹׁנָהThe firstלְכׇל־הַמִּצְוֹתof all the commandments is,שְׁמַעHear,יִשְׂרָאֵלO Israel;הָאָדוֹןThe Lordאֱלֹהֵינוּour GodהָאָדוֹןLord:אֶחָד׃is one

    And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

  30. 30

    וְאָהַבְתָּAnd you shall loveאֵת־הָאָדוֹןthe Lordאֱלֹהֶיךָyour Godבְּכׇל־לְבָבְךָwith all your heart,וּבְכׇל־נַפְשְׁךָand with all your soul,וּבְכׇל־מַדָּעֲךָand with all your mind,וּבְכׇל־מְאֹדֶךָand with all your strength:זֹאתthisהִיאisהַמִּצְוָהthe commandmentהָרִאשֹׁנָה׃first.

    And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

  31. 31

    וְהַשֵּׁנִיתAnd the secondהַדֹּמָהis like,לָהּnamely this,וְאָהַבְתָּYou shall loveלְרֵעֲךָyour neighborכָּמוֹךָas thyself.וְאֵיןThere is none otherמִצְוָהcommandmentגְּדוֹלָהgreaterמֵאֵלֶּה׃than these.

    And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

  32. 32

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֵלָיוunto him,הַסּוֹפֵרthe scribeאׇמְנָםWell,רַבִּיMaster,יָפֶהthe truth:דִבַּרְתָּyou have saidכִּיforאֱלֹהִיםGodאֶחָדthere is oneהוּאhe is;וְאֵיןand there is none otherעוֹדmoreמִלְבַדּוֹ׃but he:

    And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

  33. 33

    וּלְאַהֲבָהAnd to loveאֹתוֹhimבְּכׇל־לֵבָבwith all the heart,וּבְכׇל־מֵדָעand with all the understanding,וּבְכׇל־נֶפֶשׁand with all the soul,וּבְכׇל־מְאֹדand with all the strength,וּלְאַהֲבָהand to loveאֶת־הָרֵעַhis neighborכְּנַפְשְׁךָas himself,גְּדוֹלָהgreaterהִיאis it,מִכׇּל־עֹלוֹתthan all whole burnt offeringsוּזְבָחִים׃and sacrifices.

    And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

  34. 34

    וַיַּרְאAnd when sawיֵשׁוּעַJesusכִּי־עָנָהthat he answeredבְדַעַתdiscreetly,וַיֹּאמֶרhe saidאֵלָיוunto him,לֹא־רָחוֹקnot farאַתָּהYou areמִמַּלְכוּתfrom the kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod.וְאִישׁAnd no manלֹא־עָרַבdurst notעוֹדafter thatאֶת־לִבּוֹin his heartלִשְׁאֹלaskאוֹתוֹhimשְׁאֵלָה׃any question.

    And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

  35. 35

    וְיֵשׁוּעַAnd Jesusמְלַמֵּדwhile he taughtבַּמִּקְדָּשׁin the temple,וַיַּעַןansweredוַיֹּאמַרand said,אֵיךְHowיֹאמְרוּsayהַסּוֹפְרִיםthe scribesכִּיthatהַמָּשִׁיחַChristבֶּן־דָּוִדthe Son of David?הוּא׃is

    And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?

  36. 36

    הֲלֹאForדָוִדDavidאָמַרhimself saidבְּרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁby the Holy GhostנְאֻםsaidיְהוָֹהThe LORDלַאֲדֹנִיto my Lord,שֵׁבSit youלִימִינִיon my right hand,עַד־אָשִׁיתtill I makeאֹיְבֶיךָyour enemiesהֲדֹםa footstoolלְרַגְלֶיךָ׃for your feet.

    For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

  37. 37

    הִנֵּה־דָוִדDavid thereforeבְּעַצְמוֹhimselfקֹרֵא־לוֹcalleth himאָדוֹןLord;וְאֵיךְand whenceהוּאis he thenבְנוֹhis son?וַיֶּאֱהַבAnd heard himרֹבthe commonהָעָםpeopleלִשְׁמֹעַto hearאֹתוֹ׃him gladly.

    David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.

  38. 38

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto themבְּלַמֵּדin his teachingאֹתָםthem,הִשָּׁמְרוּBewareמִן־הַסּוֹפְרִיםof the scribes,הָאֹהֲבִיםwhich loveלְהִתְהַלֵּךְto goעֲטוּפֵיin longטַלִּיתclothing,וְשֶׁיִּשְׁאֲלוּand loveבִשְׁלוֹמָםsalutationsבַּשְּׁוָקִים׃in the marketplaces,

    And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,

  39. 39

    וְלָשֶׁבֶתAnd to sitרִאשֹׁנִיםin the chief seatsבְּבָתֵּיinכְנֵסִיּוֹתthe synagogues,וּלְהָסֵבand to reclineרִאשֹׁנִיםin the chief placesבַּסְּעוּדוֹת׃at feasts:

    And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:

  40. 40

    הַבֹּלְעִיםWhich devourאֶת־בָּתֵּיhouses,הָאַלְמָנוֹתwidows'וּמַאֲרִיכִיםand make longבַּתְּפִלָּהprayersלְמַרְאֵהfor a showעֵינָיִםof eyes:הֵמָּהtheseמִשְׁפָּטa judgmentגָּדוֹלgreat,יֶתֶרyea greaterמְאֹדexceedingly,יִשָּׁפֵטוּ׃shall they receive.

    Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.

  41. 41

    וְיֵשׁוּעַAnd Jesusיָשַׁבsatמִמּוּלover againstאֲרוֹןthe chest ofהָאוֹצָרthe treasury,וְהוּאandרֹאֶהbeheld howאֶת־הָעָםthe peopleמְשִׂימִיםcastמָעוֹתmoneyבַּאֲרוֹןinto the chest ofהָאוֹצָרthe treasury:וַעֲשִׁירִיםand that were richרַבִּיםmanyנָתְנוּcast inהַרְבֵּה׃much.

    And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.

  42. 42

    וַתָּבֹאAnd there cameאַלְמָנָהwidow,עֲנִיָּהa certain poorוַתִּתֵּןand she threw inשְׁתֵּיtwoפְרוּטוֹתmites,אֲשֶׁרwhichהֵןareרֶבַעthe fourth ofאִסָּר׃a farthing.

    And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.

    וַיִּקְרָאAnd he calledאֶל־תַּלְמִידָיוunto him his disciples,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אָמֵןVerilyאֹמֵרsayאֲנִיIלָכֶםunto you,כִּיThatהָאַלְמָנָהwidowהָעֲנִיָּהpoorהַזֹּאתthisנָתְנָהhath cast inיוֹתֵרmore,מִכׇּל־הַנֹּתְנִיםthan all they which have castאֶל־אֲרוֹןintoהָאוֹצָר׃the treasury:

    And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:

  44. 44

    כִּיForכֻלָּםall theyנָתְנוּdid cast inמִן־הָעֹדֵףofשֶׁלָּהֶםtheir abundance;וְהִיאbut sheמִמַּחְסֹרָהּof her wantנָתְנָהdid cast inכׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־לָהּall that she had,אֵת־כׇּל־מִחְיָתָהּ׃all her living.

    For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
