1. 1

   וַיִּקְרָאAnd he calledאֶל־שְׁנֵיםunto the twoהֶעָשָׂרand ten,וַיִּתֵּןand gaveלָהֶםunto themגְּבוּרָהpowerוְשׇׁלְטָןand authorityעַלoverכׇּל־הַשֵּׁדִיםall the demonsוְלִרְפֹּאand to healחֳלָיִים׃diseases.

   Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

2. 2

   וַיִּשְׁלָחֵםAnd he sent themלִקְרֹאto proclaimאֶת־מַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,וְלִרְפֹּאand to healאֶת־הָחֹלִים׃the sick.

   And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

   וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidלָהֶםunto them,אַל־תִּקְחוּTake you notמְאוּמָהanythingלַדָּרֶךְfor the way,לֹאneitherמַטּוֹתstaves,וְלֹאnorתַרְמִילscrip,וְלֹא־לֶחֶםnor bread,וְלֹא־כָסֶףnor silver,וְאַל־יִהְיֶהand let not beלְאִישׁunto a manמִכֶּםof youשְׁתֵּיtwoכֻתֳּנוֹת׃tunics.

   And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.

   וְהַבַּיִתAnd the houseאֲשֶׁרthatתָּבֹאוּyou shall enterבוֹin,שָׁםthereשְׁבוּ־לָכֶםabide yourselves,וּמִשָּׁםand from thenceצֵאוּ׃go forth.

   And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.

   וְכֹלAnd everyאֲשֶׁרthatלֹא־יְקַבְּלוּthey shall not receiveאֶתְכֶםyou,צְאוּgo forthמִן־הָעִירfrom the cityהַהִיאthat,וְנַעֲרוּand shake offאֶת־הֶעָפָרthe dustמֵעַלfrom uponרַגְלֵיכֶםyour feet,לְעֵדוּתfor a testimonyבָּהֶם׃against them.

   And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

   וַיֵּצְאוּAnd they went forth,וַיַּעַבְרוּand passedבַכְּפָרִיםthrough the villages,מְבַשְּׂרִיםpreaching good tidings ofאֶת־הַבְּשׂוֹרָהthe gospel,וּמְרַפְּאִיםand healingבְּכׇל־מָקוֹם׃in every place.

   And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

   וְהוֹרְדוֹסAnd Herodשַׂרthe captain ofהָרֹבַעthe fourth,שָׁמַעheardאֶת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרall thatנַעֲשָׂהwas doneעַל־יָדוֹby his hand,וַתִּפָּעֶםand was troubledרוּחוֹhis spirit,כִּי־יֵשׁbecause there were someאֲשֶׁרwhoאָמְרוּsaidיוֹחָנָןthat Johnנֵעוֹרhad been raisedמִן־הַמֵּתִים׃from the dead;

   Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;

8. 8

   וְיֵשׁand there were someאֲשֶׁרwhoאָמְרוּsaidאֵלִיָּסthat Eliasנִרְאָהhad appeared,וַאֲחֵרִיםand othersאָמְרוּsaidקָםhad risenנָבִיאa prophetאֶחָדoneמִן־הַנְּבִיאִיםof the prophetsהַקַּדְמוֹנִים׃the ancient.

   And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.

   וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidהוֹרְדוֹסHerod,הֵןBehold,אָנֹכִיIנָשָׂאתִיtookאֶת־רֹאשׁthe head ofיוֹחָנָןJohnמֵעָלָיוfrom off him;וּמִי־זֶהand who is thisאֲשֶׁרof whomאֲנִיIשֹׁמֵעַhearעָלָיוconcerning himכַּדְּבָרִיםaccording to the thingsהָאֵלֶּהthese?וַיְבַקֵּשׁAnd he soughtלִרְאוֹתוֹ׃to see him.

   And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

    וַיָּשׁוּבוּAnd returnedהַשְּׁלִיחִיםthe apostles,וַיְסַפְּרוּ־לוֹand recounted unto himאֶת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרall thatעָשׂוּthey had done;וַיִּקָּחֵםand he took themאֵלָיוunto himself,וַיָּסַרand turned asideעִמָּהֶםwith themלְבַדָּםby themselves aloneאֶל־מָקוֹםunto a placeשׁוֹמֵםdesolateאֲשֶׁרwhichלָעִירbelongs to the cityהַנִּקְרָאָהthat is calledבֵית־צָיְדָה׃Bethsaida.

    And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.

11. 11

    וַהֲמוֹןAnd the multitude ofהָעָםthe peopleיָדְעוּknew it,וַיֵּלְכוּand they wentאַחֲרָיוafter him,וַיְקַבְּלֵםand he received them,וַיְדַבֵּרand he spakeאֲלֵיהֶםunto themעַל־מַלְכוּתconcerning the kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,וַיִּרְפָּאand he healedאֶת־הַצְּרִיכִיםthose who neededלִרְפוּאָה׃healing.

    And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

    וְהַיּוֹםAnd the dayרָפָהwas waningלַעֲרֹבtoward evening,וּשְׁנֵיםand the twoהֶעָשָׂרand tenנִגְּשׁוּdrew nearוַיֹּאמְרוּand saidאֵלָיוunto him,שַׁלַּח־נָאSend away, we pray,אֶת־הָעָםthe people,וְיֵלְכוּand let them goאֶל־הַכְּפָרִיםunto the villagesוְהַחֲצֵרִיםand the hamletsאֲשֶׁרthat areסְבִיבוֹתֵינוּaround us,לָלוּןto lodgeוְלִמְצֹאand to findמָזוֹןfood,כִּי־פֹהfor hereבְּמָקוֹםin a placeשׁוֹמֵםdesolateאֲנָחְנוּ׃are we.

    And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

13. 13

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,תְּנוּ־אַתֶּםGive youלָהֶםunto themלֶאֱכֹלto eat.וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they said,אֵיןthere is notלָנוּunto us,כִּיbutאִםratherחֲמֵשֶׁתfiveכִּכְּרוֹת־לֶחֶםloaves of breadוְדָגִיםand fishesשְׁנַיִםtwo,בִּלְתִּיexceptאִם־נֵלֵךְthat we goוְנִקְנֶה־אֹכֶלand buy foodלְכׇל־הָעָםfor all the peopleהַזֶּה׃this.

    But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

14. 14

    כִּיForהָיוּthere wereכַּחֲמֵשֶׁתabout fiveאַלְפֵי־אִישׁthousand men.וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֶל־תַּלְמִידָיוunto his disciples,הוֹשִׁיבוּMake sitאֹתָםthemשׁוּרוֹתin rowsשׁוּרוֹתupon rows,חֲמִשִּׁיםfiftyאִישׁmenהַשּׁוּרָהin the rowהָאֶחָת׃one.

    For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.

15. 15

    וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־כֵןAnd they did so,וַיּוֹשִׁיבוּand made sitאֶת־כֻּלָּם׃all of them.

    And they did so, and made them all sit down.

16. 16

    וַיִּקַּחAnd he tookאֶת־חֲמֵשֶׁתthe fiveכִּכְּרוֹתloaves ofהַלֶּחֶםthe bread,וְאֶת־שְׁנֵיand the twoהַדָּגִיםfishes,וַיִּשָּׂאand lifted upעֵינָיוhis eyesהַשָּׁמַיְמָהunto heaven,וַיְבָרֶךְand blessedעֲלֵיהֶםover them,וַיִּפְרֹסand brokeוַיִּתֵּןand gaveלְתַלְמִידָיוunto his disciplesלָשׂוּםto setלִפְנֵיbeforeהָעָם׃the people.

    Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

17. 17

    וַיֹּאכְלוּAnd ateכֻלָּםall of themוַיִּשְׂבָּעוּand were filled;וַיִּשְׂאוּand they took upמִן־הַפְּתוֹתִיםof the piecesהַנּוֹתָרִיםthat remainedלָהֶםto them,מְלֹאthe fullness ofשְׁנֵים־עָשָׂרtwelveסַלִּים׃baskets.

    And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

18. 18

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,הוּאwhile heמִתְפַּלֵּלwas prayingלְבַדּוֹalone,וַיֵּאָסְפוּthat gatheredאֵלָיוunto himתַּלְמִידָיוhis disciples;וַיִּשְׁאַלand he askedאֹתָםthem,לֵאמֹרsaying,הֲמוֹןThe multitude ofהָעָםthe people,מָה־אֹמְרִיםwhat do they sayלִיto me,מִי־אָנִי׃that I am?

    And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?

19. 19

    וַיַּעֲנוּAnd they answeredוַיֹּאמְרוּand said,יוֹחָנָןJohnהַמַּטְבִּילthe Immerser;וְיֵשׁand there are someאֹמְרִיםsayingאֵלִיָּסElias;וַאֲחֵרִיםand othersאֹמְרִיםsayingקָםhas risenנָבִיאa prophetאֶחָדoneמִן־הַנְּבִיאִיםof the prophetsהַקַּדְמוֹנִים׃the ancient.

    They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.

20. 20

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,וְאַתֶּםAnd you,מַה־תֹּאמְרוּwhat do you sayלִיto me,מִי־אָנִיthat I am?וַיַּעַןAnd answeredפֶּטְרוֹסPeterוַיֹּאמֶרand said,מְשִׁיחַThe Anointed ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodאָתָּה׃are you.

    He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

21. 21

    וְהוּאAnd heהֵעִידadmonishedבָּםthem,וַיְצַוֵּםand commanded themלְבִלְתִּיnotהַגִּידto tellלְאִישׁunto any manאֶת־הַדָּבָרthe matterהַזֶּה׃this.

    And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;

22. 22

    וַיֹּאמַרAnd he said,צָרִיךְmustבֶּן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manלֵעָנֹתbe afflictedהַרְבֵּהmuch,וְהַזְּקֵנִיםand by the eldersוְרָאשֵׁיand the chief ofהַכֹּהֲנִיםthe priestsוְהַסּוֹפְרִיםand the scribesיִמְאָסֻהוּbe rejected,וְיֵהָרֵגand be slain,וּבַיּוֹםand on the dayהַשְּׁלִישִׁיthirdקוֹםsurelyיָקוּם׃he shall rise.

    Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

23. 23

    וְאֶל־כֻּלָּםAnd unto all of themאָמַרhe said,אִישׁWhoever,כִּי־יַחְפֹּץif he desiresלָלֶכֶתto goאַחֲרָיafter me,יְכַחֵשׁlet him denyבְּנַפְשׁוֹhis own soulוְנָשָׂאand take upאֶת־צְלוּבוֹhis crossיוֹםday byיוֹםday,וְהָלַךְand goאַחֲרָי׃after me.

    And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24. 24

    כִּיForהֶחָפֵץwhoever desiresלְהַצִּילto saveאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹhis lifeתֹּאבַדshall loseנַפְשׁוֹhis lifeמִמֶּנּוּfrom him,וְהַמְאַבֵּדand whoever losesאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹhis lifeלְמַעֲנִיfor my sake,הוּאheיַצִּילֶנָּה׃shall save it.

    For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

25. 25

    כִּיForמַה־יּוֹעִילwhat shall it profitהָאָדָםthe man,שֶׁיִּקְנֶהif he gainאֵת־כׇּל־הָעוֹלָםthe whole world,וְאִבַּדand loseוְהִשְׁחִיתand destroyאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ׃his life?

    For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

26. 26

    כִּיForהָאִישׁthe manאֲשֶׁרwhoהָיִיתִיshall be ashamed of meאֲנִיIוּדְבָרַיand of my words,לוֹunto himלְחֶרְפָּהfor shame,הוּאheיִהְיֶהshall beלְחֶרְפָּהfor shameלְבֶן־הָאָדָםunto the Son of man,כַּאֲשֶׁרwhenיָבֹאhe shall comeבִּכְבוֹדוֹin his glory,וּבִכְבוֹדand in the glory ofהָאָבthe Fatherוְהַמַּלְאָכִיםand the angelsהַקְּדוֹשִׁים׃the holy.

    For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

27. 27

    וּבֶאֱמֶתAnd in truthאֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,יֵשׁthere areמִן־הָעֹמְדִיםof them who standפֹּהhereאֲשֶׁרthatלֹא־יִטְעֲמוּthey shall not tasteמָוֶתdeathעַדuntilכִּי־יִרְאוּthey seeאֶת־מַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

28. 28

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passכִּשְׁמֹנָהabout eightיָמִיםdaysאַחֲרֵיafterהַדְּבָרִיםthe mattersהָאֵלֶּהthese,וַיִּקַּחthat he tookאֵלָיוwith himאֶת־פֶּטְרוֹסPeterוְאֶת־יוֹחָנָןand Johnוְאֶת־יַעֲקֹבand James,וַיַּעַלand went upאֶל־הָהָרto the mountainלְהִתְפַּלֵּלto prayשָׁם׃there.

    And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

29. 29

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,בְּהִתְפַּלֲלוֹas he prayed,וַיֵּהָפְכוּthat was changedפָנָיוhis face,וּלְבוּשׁוֹand his clothingהִלְבִּיןbecame whiteוְהִבְרִיק׃and shone.

    And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

30. 30

    וְהִנֵּהAnd behold,שְׁנֵיtwoאֲנָשִׁיםmenמִדַבְּרִיםwere speakingאִתּוֹwith him,משֶׁהMosesוְאֵלִיָּס׃and Elias.

    And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

31. 31

    הֵמָּהTheyנִרְאוּappearedבִּכְבוֹדָםin their glory,וְהִגִּידוּand they toldאֶת־אַחֲרִיתוֹof his endאֲשֶׁרwhichיְמַלְּאֶנָּהhe should accomplishבִּירוּשָׁלָיִם׃in Jerusalem.

    Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

32. 32

    וּפֶטְרוֹסAnd Peterוַאֲשֶׁרand those who wereאִתּוֹwith himנִרְדָּמִיםwere heavy with sleep;וַיָּקִיצוּand they awoke,וַיִּרְאוּand they sawאֶת־כְּבוֹדוֹhis glory,וְאֶת־שְׁנֵיand the twoהָאֲנָשִׁיםmenהָעֹמְדִיםstandingעָלָיו׃with him.

    But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

33. 33

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כְּהִפָּרְדָםas they were partingמֵעִמּוֹfrom him,וַיֹּאמֶרthat saidפֶּטְרוֹסPeterאֶל־יֵשׁוּעַunto Jesus,מוֹרֶהMaster,טוֹבit is goodלָנוּfor usלִהְיוֹתto beפֹּהhere;נַעֲשֶׂה־נָּאlet us make, we pray,שָׁלשׁthreeסֻכּוֹתbooths,לְךָfor youאַחַתone,וּלְמשֶׁהand for Mosesאַחַתone,וּלְאֵלִיָּסand for Eliasאַחַתone;וְלֹאand notיָדַעdid he knowמַה־דִּבֵּר׃what he spake.

    And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.

34. 34

    עוֹדStillהוּאheמְדַבֵּרwas speakingכָּזֹאתthus,וְהִנֵּהand behold,עָנָןa cloudסֹכֵךְovershadowedעֲלֵיהֶםover them,וּכְבוֹאָםand as they enteredבְּתוֹךְwithinהֶעָנָןthe cloud,וַיֶּחֱרָדוּ׃they were afraid.

    While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

35. 35

    וְהִנֵּהAnd behold,קוֹלa voiceמִן־הֶעָנָןout of the cloud,אֹמֵרsaying,זֶה־בְּנִיThis is my son,יְדִידִיmy beloved;אֵלָיוunto himתִּשְׁמָעוּן׃you shall hearken.

    And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

36. 36

    וּבְהִשָּׁמַעAnd when was heardהַקּוֹלthe voice,נִמְצָאwas foundיֵשׁוּעַJesusלְבַדּוֹalone.וְהֵמָּהAnd theyהֶחֱשׁוּheld their peace,וְלֹא־הִגִּידוּand they told notדָבָרa thingלְאִישׁunto any manבַּיָּמִיםin the daysהָהֵםthoseמִכֹּלof allאֲשֶׁרthatרָאוּ׃they had seen.

    And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

37. 37

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passמִמׇּחֳרָתon the morrow,בְּרִדְתָּםwhen they came downמִן־הָהָרfrom the mountain,וַיֵּצֵאthat went outעַם־רַבa people greatלִקְרָאתוֹ׃to meet him.

    And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.

38. 38

    וְהִנֵּהAnd behold,אִישׁa manאֶחָדoneמִן־הָעָםfrom the peopleזֹעֵקcried out,לֵאמֹרsaying,אָנָּאI beseech you,רַבִּיRabbi,פְּנֵה־נָאturn, I pray,אֶל־בְּנִיunto my son,כִּיforיָחִידan only oneהוּאis heלִי׃to me.

    And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.

39. 39

    וְהִנֵּהAnd behold,כִּיwhenאָחַזseizesבּוֹhimרוּחַthe spirit,הוּאheמְצַעֵקcries outפִּתְאֹםsuddenly,וְהָרוּחַand the spiritמְרוֹצֵץconvulsesאֹתוֹhimבְּהוֹרִידby causing to fallרִירוֹhis foam,וּמַקְשֶׁהand is hardלָסוּרto departמִמֶּנּוּfrom him,וִידַכֵּאand bruisesאֹתוֹ׃him.

    And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.

40. 40

    וָאֲבַקֵּשׁAnd I soughtמִתַּלְמִידֶיךָof your disciplesלְגָרֲשׁוֹto cast it out,וְלֹאbut notיָכֹלוּ׃were they able.

    And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.

41. 41

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמַרand said,הוֹיWoe,דּוֹרgenerationחֲסַרlacking inאֱמוּנָהfaithוּפְתַלְתֹּלand perverse,עַד־מָתַיuntil whenאֶהְיֶהshall I beעִמָּכֶםwith you,וְאֶשָּׂאand bearאֶתְכֶםwith you?הָבֵאBringאֶת־בִּנְךָyour sonהֵנָּה׃hither.

    And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.

42. 42

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,אַךְasהִקְרִיבhe drew nearלָבוֹאto come,הִפִּילוֹcast him downהַשֵּׁדthe demonוַיְרוֹצֲצֵהוּand convulsed him.וְיֵשׁוּעַAnd Jesusגָּעַרrebukedבָּרוּחַthe spiritהַטָּמֵאunclean,וַיְרַפֵּאand healedאֶת־הַנַּעַרthe boy,וַיְשִׁיבֵהוּand gave him backלְאָבִיו׃unto his father.

    And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

43. 43

    וַיִּשְׁתּוֹמֲמוּAnd were astoundedכֻלָּםall of themעַל־גְּדֻלַּתat the greatness ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod.וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,בְּתָמְהָםas they marvelled,כֻּלָּםall of them,עַל־כֹּלat allאֲשֶׁרthatעָשָׂהhe did,וַיֹּאמֶרthat saidיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֶל־תַּלְמִידָיו׃unto his disciples,

    And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

44. 44

    שִׂימוּSetאַתֶּםyouבְּאׇזְנֵיכֶםin your earsאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםthe wordsהָאֵלֶּהthese,כִּיforעָתִידis destinedבֶּן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manלְהִמָּסֵרto be deliveredבִּידֵיinto the hands ofבְנֵי־אָדָם׃the sons of men.

    Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

45. 45

    וְהֵמָּהBut theyלֹאnotהֵבִינוּunderstoodאֶת־הַמַּאֲמָרthe sayingהַזֶּהthis,וַיְהִיand it wasנֶעְלָםhiddenמִדַּעְתָּםfrom their knowing,וַיִּירְאוּand they fearedלִשְׁאֹלto askאֹתוֹhimעַל־הַמַּאֲמָרconcerning the sayingהַזֶּה׃this.

    But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

46. 46

    וַיַּעַלAnd it came upעַל־לְבָבָםupon their heartלַחֲשׁוֹבto considerמִיwhoהַגָּדוֹלwas the greatestבָּהֶם׃among them.

    Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

47. 47

    וַיֵּדַעAnd knewיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֶת־מַחֲשֶׁבֶתthe thought ofלִבָּםtheir heart,וַיִּקַּחand he tookיֶלֶדa childוַיַּעֲמִידֵהוּand set himאֶצְלוֹ׃beside him,

    And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,

48. 48

    וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הַמְקַבֵּלWhoever receivesאֶת־הַיֶּלֶדthe childהַזֶּהthisלִשְׁמִיin my nameאוֹתִיmeהוּאheמְקַבֵּלreceives;וְהַמְקַבֵּלand whoever receivesאוֹתִיmeהוּאheמְקַבֵּלreceivesאֵת־אֲשֶׁרhim whoשְׁלָחָנִיsent me;כִּיforהַקָּטֹןthe leastבְּכֻלְּכֶםamong all of you,הוּאheיִהְיֶהshall beהַגָּדוֹל׃the great.

    And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

49. 49

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeredיוֹחָנָןJohnוַיֹּאמַרand said,מוֹרֶהMaster,רָאִינוּwe sawאִישׁa manמְגָרֵשׁcasting outשֵׁדִיםdemonsבִּשְׁמֶךָin your name,וַנִּכְלָאand we forbadeאוֹתוֹhim,כִּיbecauseאֵינֶנּוּhe does notהוֹלֵךְgoעִמָּנוּ׃with us.

    And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.

50. 50

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֵלָיוunto him,אַל־תִּכְלָאוּForbid him not,כִּיforכֹלwhoeverאֲשֶׁרthatאֵינֶנּוּis notלְצָרֵינוּagainst us,לָנוּfor usהוּא׃is he.

    And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

51. 51

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כַּאֲשֶׁרwhenקָרְבוּdrew nearיְמֵיthe days ofהֵעָלוֹתוֹhis being received up,וַיָּשֶׂםthat he setאֶת־פָּנָיוhis faceלָלֶכֶתto goיְרוּשָׁלָיִם׃to Jerusalem.

    And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,

52. 52

    וַיִּשְׁלַחAnd he sentמַלְאָכִיםmessengersלְפָנָיוbefore him,וַיֵּלְכוּand they wentוַיָּבֹאוּand enteredאֶל־אֶחָדinto oneמִכְּפָרֵיof the villages ofהַשֹּׁמְרוֹנִיםthe Samaritans,לְהָכִיןto prepareלוֹ׃for him.

    And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.

53. 53

    וְלֹאBut notקִבְּלֻהוּdid they receive him,כִּיbecauseפָנָיוhis faceהֹלְכִיםwas goingיְרוּשָׁלָיִם׃to Jerusalem.

    And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

54. 54

    וַיִּרְאוּAnd sawיַעֲקֹבJamesוְיוֹחָנָןand John,תַּלְמִידָיוhis disciples,וַיֹּאמְרוּand said,אֲדֹנֵינוּOur Lord,הֲתִרְצֶהwill youוְנֹאמַרthat we say,שֶׁתֵּרֵדLet come downאֵשׁfireמִן־הַשָּׁמַיִםfrom the heavens,וְתֹאכְלֵםand consume them,כַּאֲשֶׁרasעָשָׂהdidאֵלִיָּס׃Elias?

    And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?

55. 55

    וַיִּפֶןAnd he turnedוַיִּגְעַר־בָּםand rebuked them,וַיֹּאמַרand said,הֲלֹאDo you notיְדַעְתֶּםknowבְּנֵיsons ofרוּחוֹspiritשֶׁלofמִיwhomאַתֶּם׃you are?

    But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

56. 56

    כִּיForבֶן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manלֹאnotבָאcameלְאַבֵּדto destroyנַפְשׁוֹתthe souls ofאָדָםmen,כִּיbutאִםratherלְהוֹשִׁיעַto save.וַיֵּלְכוּAnd they wentלָהֶםthemselvesאֶל־כְּפָרunto a villageאַחֵר׃other.

    For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

57. 57

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,בְּלֶכְתָּםas they were goingבַּדֶּרֶךְon the way,וַיֹּאמֶרthat saidאֵלָיוunto himאִישׁa man,אֲדֹנִיMy lord,אֵלְכָהI will goאַחֲרֶיךָafter youאֶל־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרunto everywhere thatתֵּלֵךְ׃you go.

    And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

58. 58

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֵלָיוunto himיֵשׁוּעַJesus,לַשּׁוּעָלִיםTo the foxesיֵשׁthere areמְאוּרוֹתdens,וּלְעוֹףand to the fowl ofהַשָּׁמַיִםthe heavensקִנִּיםnests,וּבֶן־הָאָדָםbut the Son of manאֵין־לוֹhas notמָקוֹםa placeלְהָנִיחַto layרֹאשׁוֹ׃his head.

    And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

59. 59

    וְאֶל־אִישׁAnd unto a manאַחֵרotherאָמַרhe said,לֵךְGoאַחֲרָיafter me;וְהוּאand heאָמַרsaid,אֲדֹנִיMy lord,תֶּן־לִיpermit me,וְאֵלְכָהand let me goבָרִאשׁוֹנָהfirstלִקְבֹּרto buryאֶת־אָבִי׃my father.

    And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

60. 60

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֵלָיוunto himיֵשׁוּעַJesus,הַנַּחLeaveלַמֵּתִיםthe deadלִקְבֹּרto buryאֶת־מֵתֵיהֶםtheir dead,וְאַתָּהbut you,לֵךְgo,הוֹדַעproclaimאֶת־מַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

61. 61

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidעוֹדalsoאִישׁa manאַחֵרother,אֵלְכָהI will goאַחֲרֶיךָafter you,אֲדֹנִיmy lord;רַקonlyהַנִּיחָה־לִּיallow meבָרִאשׁוֹנָהfirstלְהִפָּטֵרto take leaveמִבְּנֵיof those ofבֵיתִי׃my house.

    And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

62. 62

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidיֵשׁוּעַJesus,הַשָּׂםHe who putsיָדוֹhis handעַל־הַמַּחֲרֵשָׁהupon the plowוּמַבִּיטand looksאַחֲרָיוbehind him,לֹאnotיִכְשַׁרis fitלְמַלְכוּתfor the kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
