1. 1

   וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כַּאֲשֶׁרwhenדָּחַקpressedהֲמוֹןthe multitude ofהָעָםthe peopleלִשְׁמֹעַto hearאֶת־דְּבַרthe word ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,וְהוּאthat heעֹמֵדwas standingעַל־יַדbesideיָם־גִּנֵּיסָר׃the sea of Gennesaret,

   And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,

2. 2

   וַיַּרְאand he sawשְׁתֵּיtwoאֳנִיּוֹתshipsעֹמְדוֹתstandingעַל־יַדbesideהַיָּםthe sea;וְהַדַּיָּגִיםand the fishermenיָצְאוּhad gone forthמֵהֶןfrom them,וְהֵםand theyמְכַבְּסִיםwere washingאֵת־הַמִּכְמֹרוֹת׃the nets.

   And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

3. 3

   וַיֵּרֶדAnd he went downאֶל־אַחַתunto oneמִן־הׇאֳנִיּוֹתof the ships,אֲשֶׁרwhichהִיאwasלְשִׁמְעוֹןSimon's,וַיְבַקֵּשׁand he askedמִמֶּנּוּof himלְהַעֲבִירוֹto put it outמְעַטa littleמִן־הַיַּבָּשָׁהfrom the dry landאֶל־הַיָּםinto the sea;וַיֵּשֶׁבand he satוַיְלַמֵּדand taughtאֶת־הָעָםthe peopleמִתּוֹךְfrom withinהׇאֳנִיָּה׃the ship.

   And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

4. 4

   וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כְּכַלּתוֹwhen he had finishedלְדַבֵּרspeaking,וַיֹּאמֶרthat he saidאֶל־שִׁמְעוֹןunto Simon,הַעֲבֵרPut outאֶל־עֹמֶקunto the depth ofהַיָּםthe sea,וְהוֹרִידוּand let downאֶת־מִכְמְרוֹתֵיכֶםyour netsלָצוּד׃to catch.

   Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

5. 5

   וַיַּעַןAnd answeredשִׁמְעוֹןSimonוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,מוֹרֶהTeacher,כׇּל־הַלַּיְלָהall the nightיָגַעְנוּwe have labored,וְלֹאand notאָחַזְנוּhave we caughtמְאוּמָהanything;אַךְbutעַל־פִּיךָat your wordאוֹרִידI will let downאֶת־הַמִּכְמֹרֶת׃the net.

   And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

6. 6

   וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־כֵןAnd they did so,וַיִּלְכְּדוּand they caughtדָגִיםfishesהַרְבֵּהmany,מְאֹדvery many,וַתִּקָּרַעand was tornמִכְמַרְתָּם׃their net.

   And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

7. 7

   וַיָּנִיפוּAnd they wavedיָדthe handאֶל־חַבְרֵיהֶםunto their partnersאֲשֶׁרwhoבׇאֳנִיָּהwere in the shipהַשְּׁנִיָהsecond,לָבוֹאto comeאֲלֵיהֶםunto themוּלְעׇזְרָםand to help them;וַיָּבֹאוּand they cameוַיְמַלְאוּand filledאֶת־שְׁתֵּיbothהׇאֳנִיּוֹתships,עַד־לִשְׁקֹעַ׃until they were about to sink.

   And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

8. 8

   וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כִּרְאוֹתwhen sawשִׁמְעוֹןSimonפֶּטְרוֹסPeterאֶת־זֹאתthis,וַיִּפֹּלthat he fellלְבִרְכֵּיat the knees ofיֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיֹּאמַרand said,אֲדֹנִיMy lord,צֵא־נָאgo forth, I pray,מֵעָלַיfrom beside me,כִּי־אִישׁfor a manחוֹטֵאsinfulאָנֹכִי׃am I.

   When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

9. 9

   כִּיForשַׁמָּהastonishmentהֶחֱזִיקָהhad seizedאוֹתוֹhimוְאֶת־כֹּלand allאֲשֶׁרwho wereעִמּוֹwith him,עַל־צֵידover the catch ofהַדָּגִיםthe fishesאֲשֶׁרwhichצָדוּ׃they had caught;

   For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:

10. 10

    וְכֵןand likewiseגַּםalsoאֶת־יַעֲקֹבJamesוְאֶת־יוֹחָנָןand John,בְּנֵיsons ofזַבְדַּיZebedee,אֲשֶׁרwhoהִתְחַבְּרוּwere joinedעִם־שִׁמְעוֹןwith Simon.וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֶל־שִׁמְעוֹןunto Simon,אַל־תִּירָאFear not;מֵעַתָּהfrom now onצוֹדsurelyתָּצוּדshall you catchאֲנָשִׁים׃men.

    And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

11. 11

    וַיּוֹלִיכוּAnd they broughtאֶת־הׇאֳנִיּוֹתthe shipsאֶל־הַיַּבָּשָׁהunto the dry land,וַיַּעַזְבוּand they forsookאֶת־הַכֹּלall,וַיֵּלְכוּand wentאַחֲרָיו׃after him.

    And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

12. 12

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,בִּהְיוֹתוֹwhile he wasבְּאַחַתin one ofהֶעָרִיםthe cities,וְהִנֵּה־אִישׁthat behold a manכֻּלּוֹwhollyצָרוּעַleprousוַיַּרְאsawאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיִּפֹּלand he fellעַל־פָּנָיוon his face,וַיִּתְחַנֵּןand besoughtאֵלָיוhim,לֵאמֹרsaying,אֲדֹנִיMy lord,אִם־תַּחְפֹּץif you will,תּוּכַלyou are ableלְטַהֲרֵנִי׃to cleanse me.

    And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

13. 13

    וַיִּשְׁלַחAnd he stretched outאֶת־יָדוֹhis hand,וַיִּגַּע־בּוֹand touched him,וַיֹּאמֶרand said,חָפֵץWillingאָנֹכִיam I;טְהָרbe clean.וּפִתְאֹםAnd suddenlyסָרָהdepartedמִמֶּנּוּfrom himהַצָּרָעַת׃the leprosy.

    And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.

14. 14

    וַיְצַוAnd he commandedעָלָיוupon himלְבִלְתִּיnotסַפֵּרto tellלְאִישׁany man,כִּיbutאִם־לֵךְgo,וְהֵרָאֵהand shew thyselfאֶל־הַכֹּהֵןunto the priest,וְהַקְרֵבand offerקׇרְבָּןan offeringעַל־טׇהֳרָתְךָfor your cleansing,כַּאֲשֶׁרasצִוָּהcommandedמשֶׁהMoses,לְעֵדוּתfor a testimonyלָהֶם׃unto them.

    And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

15. 15

    וְשׇׁמְעוֹAnd the report of himהוֹלֵךְkept goingהָלוֹךְspreadingוְגָדֵלand growing,וַיִּקָּבְצוּand gatheredעַםa peopleרַבgreatלִשְׁמוֹעַto hearוּלְהֵרָפֵאand to be healedעַל־יָדוֹby his handמִתַּחֲלוּאֵיהֶם׃from their infirmities.

    But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.

16. 16

    וְהוּאBut heסָרwithdrewאֶל־הַמִּדְבָּרוֹתunto the wildernessesוּמִתְפַּלֵּל׃and was praying.

    And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.

17. 17

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,הַיּוֹםone day,וְהוּאwhile heמְלַמֵּדwas teaching,וּפְרוּשִׁיםthat Phariseesוּמוֹרֵיand teachers ofהַתּוֹרָהthe law,אֲשֶׁרwhoבָּאוּhad comeמִכׇּל־כְּפָרֵיfrom all the villages ofהַגָּלִילthe Galileeוּמִיהוּדָהand from Judahוִירוּשָׁלָיִםand Jerusalem,יֹשְׁבִיםwere sittingשָׁםthere;וַתְּהִי־בוֹand was in himגְּבוּרַתthe power ofיְהוָֹהthe LORDלִרְפּוֹא׃to heal.

    And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judæa, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

18. 18

    וְהִנֵּהAnd behold,אֲנָשִׁיםmenנוֹשְׂאִיםcarryingאִישׁa manבַּמִּטָּהon a bed,וְהוּאand heנְכֵהwas stricken ofאֵבָרִיםlimbs;וַיְבַקְשׁוּand they soughtלַהֲבִיאוֹto bring himאֶל־תּוֹךְinto the midst ofהַבַּיִתthe house,וְלָשׂוּםand to set himלְפָנָיו׃before him.

    And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.

19. 19

    וְלֹא־מָצְאוּAnd not findingדֶרֶךְa wayלְהַכְנִיסוֹto bring him inמֵרֹבbecause of the multitude ofהָעָםthe people,וַיַּעֲלוּthey went upהַגָּגָהonto the roof,וַיּוֹרִידֻהוּand let him downעַל־עַרְשׂוֹupon his couchבֵּיןthroughהָרְעָפִיםthe tiles,לְתוֹךְinto the midst ofהַבַּיִתthe house,לִפְנֵיbeforeיֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus.

    And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.

20. 20

    וַיַּרְאAnd he sawאֶת־אֱמוּנָתָםtheir faith,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,בֶּן־אָדָםSon of man,נִסְלְחוּ־לְךָare forgiven youחַטֹּאתֶיךָ׃your sins.

    And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

21. 21

    וַיָּחֵלּוּAnd beganהַסּוֹפְרִיםthe scribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand the Phariseesלַחֲשֹׁבto reasonמַחֲשָׁבוֹתthoughts,לֵאמֹרsaying,מִיWhoהוּאisזֶהthisהַמְדַבֵּרwho speakethגִּדּוּפִיםblasphemies?מִיWhoיוּכַלis ableלִסְלֹחַto forgiveלַחֲטָאִיםsins,בִּלְתִּיexceptהָאֱלֹהִיםGodלְבַדּוֹ׃alone?

    And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?

22. 22

    וַיֵּדַעAnd knewיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֶת־מַחְשְׁבוֹתָםtheir thoughts,וַיַּעַןand he answeredוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,מָהWhatאַתֶּםare youחשְׁבִיםthinkingבִּלְבַבְכֶם׃in your hearts?

    But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?

23. 23

    מָהWhichהַנָּקֵלis easierהֶאָמֹרto say,נִסְלְחוּ־לְךָForgiven you areחַטֹּאתֶיךָyour sins;אִם־אָמֹרor to say,קוּםRise upוְהִתְהַלֵּךְ׃and walk?

    Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?

24. 24

    אַךְButלְמַעַןthatתֵּדְעוּןyou may knowכִּיthatבֶן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manיֶשׁ־לוֹhathהַשָּׁלְטָןthe authorityבָּאָרֶץon the earthלִסְלֹחַto forgiveלַחֲטָאִיםsins,וַיֹּאמֶרhe saidאֶל־נְכֵהunto the stricken ofהָאֵבָרִיםlimbs,אֹמֵרSayאֲנִיIאֵלֶיךָunto you,קוּםArise,וְשָׂאand take upאֶת־עַרְשְׂךָyour couch,וְלֵךְand goאֶל־בֵּיתֶךָ׃unto your house.

    But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.

25. 25

    וַיְמַהֵרAnd he hastenedוַיָּקׇםand aroseלְעֵינֵיהֶםbefore their eyes,וַיִּשָּׂאand he took upאֵת־מִשְׁכָּבוֹhis bed,וַיֵּלֶךְand wentאֶל־בֵּיתוֹunto his house,וַיְהַלֵּלand praisedאֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

26. 26

    וְשַׁמָּהAnd astonishmentהֶחֱזִיקָהseizedאֶת־כֻּלָּםall of them,וַיְבָרֲכוּand they blessedאֶת־הָאֱלֹהִיםGod,וַיִּמָּלְאוּand they were filled withיִרְאָהfear,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,כִּיthatנִפְלָאוֹתwondrous thingsרָאִינוּhave we seenהַיּוֹם׃today.

    And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

27. 27

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,אַחֲרֵיafterכֵןthis,וַיֵּצֵאthat he went out,וַיַּרְאand he sawמוֹכֵסa tax-collectorאֶחָדone,וּשְׁמוֹand his name wasלֵוִיLevi,וְהוּאand heיוֹשֵׁבwas sittingבְּבֵיתin the house ofהַמֶּכֶסthe toll;וַיֹּאמֶרand he saidאֵלָיוunto him,לְכָהCome youאַחֲרָי׃after me.

    And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.

28. 28

    וַיַּעֲזֹבAnd he forsookאֶת־הַכֹּלeverything,וַיָּקׇםand aroseוַיֵּלֶךְand wentאַחֲרָיו׃after him.

    And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

29. 29

    וַיַּעַשׂ־לוֹAnd made for himלֵוִיLeviמִשְׁתֶּהa feastגָדוֹלgreatבְּבֵיתוֹin his house;וְעַם־רַבand a great peopleמִן־הַמּוֹכְסִיםof the tax-collectorsוַאֲנָשִׁיםand menאֲחֵרִיםotherהָיוּwereמְסֻבִּיםrecliningעִמָּהֶם׃with them.

    And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.

30. 30

    וַיִּלּוֹנוּAnd murmuredהַסּוֹפְרִיםthe scribesאֲשֶׁרwho wereבָּהֶםamong themוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand the Phariseesעַל־תַּלְמִידָיוagainst his disciples,וַיֹּאמְרוּand said,מַדּוּעַWhyאַתֶּםdo youאֹכְלִיםeatוְשֹׁתִיםand drinkעִם־הַמּוֹכְסִיםwith the tax-collectorsוְהַחַטָּאִים׃and the sinners?

    But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

31. 31

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הַבְּרִיאִיםThe wholeאֵינָםdo notצְרִיכִיםneedלְרֹפֵאa physician,כִּיbutאִם־הַחֹלִים׃rather the sick.

    And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

32. 32

    לֹאNotבָאתִיcame Iלִקְרוֹאto callהַצַּדִּיקִיםthe righteousלַתְּשׁוּבָהunto repentance,כִּיbutאִםratherהַחַטָּאִים׃the sinners.

    I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

33. 33

    וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they saidאֵלָיוunto him,הֵןBehold,תַּלְמִידֵיthe disciples ofיוֹחָנָןJohnמַרְבִּיםoftenלָצוּםfastוְאֹמְרִיםand offerתְּחִנּוֹתsupplications,וְגַםand alsoתַּלְמִידֵיthe disciples ofהַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Phariseesעֹשִׂיםdoכֵּןlikewise,וְתַלְמִידֶיךָbut your disciplesאֹכְלִיםeatוְשֹׁתִים׃and drink.

    And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?

34. 34

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הֲתוּכְלוּCan youאֲנֹסcompelבְּנֵיthe sons ofהַחֻפָּהthe bridal canopyלָצוּםto fastוְהֶחָתָןwhile the bridegroomעוֹדֶנּוּis stillעִמָּהֶם׃with them?

    And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?

35. 35

    וְאוּלָםYetיָמִיםdaysבָּאִיםcomeוְלֻקַּחwhen shall be takenמֵאִתָּםfrom themהֶחָתָןthe bridegroom;אָזthenיָצוּמוּshall they fastבַּיָּמִיםin the daysהָהֵמָּה׃those.

    But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

36. 36

    וַיְדַבֵּרAnd he spakeאֲלֵיהֶםunto themגַּםalsoאֶת־הַמָּשָׁלthe parableהַזֶּהthis:אֵיןThere is noאִישׁmanמַעֲלֶהwho putsמַטְלִיתa patchשֶׁל־בֶּגֶדof a garmentחָדָשׁnewעַל־בֶּגֶדupon a garmentבָּלוּיworn out;כִּיforאִםifכֵּןso,גַּםalsoהֶחָדָשׁthe newיִקָּרֵעַshall be torn,וְגַםand alsoלֹא־תִשְׁוֶהshall not matchמַטְלִיתthe patch ofהֶחָדָשׁthe newלַבָּלוּי׃with the worn out.

    And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.

37. 37

    וְאֵיןAnd there is noאִישׁmanנֹתֵןwho putsיַיִןwineחָדָשׁnewבְּנֹאדוֹתinto skin-bottlesבָּלִיםworn out;כִּיforאִםifכֵּןso,הַיַּיִןthe wineהֶחָדָשׁnewיְבַקַּעwill burstאֶת־הַנֹּאדוֹתthe skin-bottles,וְהוּאand itיִשָּׁפֵךְshall be spilled,וְהַנֹּאדוֹתand the skin-bottlesיֹאבֵדוּ׃shall perish.

    And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.

38. 38

    אֲבָלRatherיֻתַּןlet be putהַיַּיִןthe wineהֶחָדָשׁnewבְּנֹאדוֹתinto skin-bottlesחֲדָשִׁיםnew,וּשְׁנֵיהֶםand both of themיַחְדָּוtogetherיִשָּׁמֵרוּ׃shall be preserved.

    But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

39. 39

    וַאֲשֶׁרAnd he thatשָׁתָהhath drunkיַיִןwineיָשָׁןoldאֵינֶנּוּdoes notחָפֵץdesireעוֹדanymoreבְּיַיִןwineחָדָשׁnew,כִּיforיֹאמַרhe says,הַיָּשָׁןThe oldנָעִיםis pleasantמִמֶּנּוּ׃more than it.

    No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.
