    Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cæsar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judæa, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituræa and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

    בִּימֵיin the days ofהַכֹּהֲנִיםthe priestsהַגְּדוֹלִיםgreat,חָנָןHananוְקַיָּפָאand Caiaphas,הָיָהcameדְּבַרthe word ofאֱלֹהִיםGodאֶל־יוֹחָנָןunto Johnבֶּן־זְכַרְיָהson of Zechariahבַּמִּדְבָּר׃in the wilderness.

    Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

    וַיָּבֹאAnd he cameבְּכׇל־כִּכַּרinto all the plain ofהַיַּרְדֵּןthe Jordan,וַיִּקְרָאand proclaimedטְבִילַתa baptism ofהַתְּשׁוּבָהrepentanceלִסְלִיחַתfor the forgiveness ofהַחֲטָאִים׃sins;

    And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

    כַּכָּתוּבas it is writtenבְּסֵפֶרin the book ofדִּבְרֵיthe words ofיְשַׁעְיָהוּEsaiasהַנָּבִיאthe prophet,קוֹלA voiceקוֹרֵאcryingבַמִּדְבַּרin the wilderness,פַּנּוּClear youדֶּרֶךְthe way ofיְהוָֹהthe LORD,יַשְּׁרוּmake straightמְסִלּוֹתָיו׃his highways.

    As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

    כׇּל־גֶּיאEvery valleyיִנָּשֵׂאshall be lifted up,וְכׇל־הַרand every mountainוְגִבְעָהand hillיִשְׁפָּלוּshall be made low;וְהָיָהand shall beהֶעָקֹבthe crookedלְמִישׁוֹרa level place,וְהָרְכָסִיםand the rough placesלְבִקְעָה׃a plain;

    Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

  6. 6

    וְרָאוּand shall seeכׇל־בָּשָׂרall fleshאֵת־יְשׁוּעַתthe salvation ofאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֶל־הֲמוֹןunto the multitude ofהָעָםthe peopleהַיֹּצְאִיםthat went outלְהִטָּבֵלto be baptizedעַל־יָדוֹby his hand,אַתֶּםYouיַלְדֵיchildren ofהַצִּפְעוֹנִיםthe vipers,מִיwhoהִשְׂכִּילhath taughtאֶתְכֶםyouלְהִמָּלֵטto escapeמִפְּנֵיfromהַקֶּצֶףthe wrathהַבָּא׃that cometh?

    Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

  8. 8

    לָכֵןThereforeעֲשׂוּbring forthפְרִיfruitsרָאוּיworthyלַתְּשׁוּבָהof repentance,וְאַל־תְּדַמּוּand think notבְנַפְשְׁכֶםin your souls,לֵאמֹרsaying,אַבְרָהָםAbrahamהוּאisאָבִינוּour father;כִּיforאֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,אֲשֶׁרthatמִן־הָאֲבָנִיםfrom the stonesהָאֵלֶּהtheseיָכֹלis ableהָאֱלֹהִיםGodלְהָקִיםto raise upבָּנִיםsonsלְאַבְרָהָם׃unto Abraham.

    Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

    וּכְבָרAnd alreadyהוּשַׂםis placedהַגַּרְזֶןthe axeעַל־שֹׁרֶשׁupon the root ofהָעֵצִיםthe trees;וְהִנֵּהand behold,כׇל־עֵץevery treeאֲשֶׁרthatאֵינֶנּוּis notעֹשֶׂהmakingפְּרִיfruitטוֹבgoodיִגָּדַעshall be cut down,וְהֻשְׁלַךְand castבָּאֵשׁ׃into the fire.

    And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

    וַיִּשְׁאָלֵהוּAnd asked himהֲמוֹןthe multitude ofהָעָםthe people,לֵאמֹרsaying,מָהWhatאֵפוֹאthenנַעֲשֶׂה׃shall we do?

    And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

  11. 11

    וַיַּעַןAnd he answeredוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,מִיWhoeverאֲשֶׁר־לוֹhasכֻּתֳּנוֹתtunicsשְׁתַּיִםtwo,יִתֵּןlet him giveלַאֲשֶׁרto him whoאֵין־לוֹhath none;וּמִיand whoeverאֲשֶׁר־לוֹhasמָזוֹןfood,כֵּןsoיַעֲשֶׂהlet him doגַּם־הוּא׃likewise.

    He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

  12. 12

    וַיָּבֹאוּAnd cameגַם־מוֹכְסִיםalso tax-collectorsלְהִטָּבֵלto be baptized,וַיֹּאמְרוּand saidאֵלָיוunto him,רַבִּיRabbi,מַה־נַּעֲשֶׂה׃what shall we do?

    Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

  13. 13

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אַל־תִּגְבּוּCollect noיוֹתֵרmoreמֵחָקְכֶם׃than what is appointed to you.

    And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

  14. 14

    וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּAnd asked himגַּם־אַנְשֵׁיalso the men ofהַצָּבָאthe army,לֵאמֹרsaying,וַאֲנַחְנוּAnd we,מַה־נַּעֲשֶׂהwhat shall we do?וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אַל־תְּזַעְזְעוּShake notאִישׁany man,וְאַל־תַּעַשְׁקוּand oppress not,וְדַיand let it sufficeלָכֶםyouבִּשְׂכַרְכֶם׃with your wages.

    And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כַּאֲשֶׁר־חִכָּהwhile was awaitingהָעָםthe people,וְכֻלָּםand all of themחשְׁבִיםwere reasoningבְּלִבָּםin their hearts,לֵאמֹרsaying,אוּלַיperhapsיוֹחָנָןJohnהוּאhe isהַמָּשִׁיחַ׃the Christ;

    And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

  16. 16

    וַיַּעַןansweredיוֹחָנָןJohn,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלְכֻלָּםunto them all,הֵן־אֲנִיBehold, Iטוֹבֵלbaptizeאֶתְכֶםyouבַּמָּיִםwith water;אֲבָלbutבּוֹאsurely comethיָבוֹאthere comethהֶחָזָקone strongerמִמֶּנִּיthan I,אֲשֶׁרof whomקָטֹנְתִּיI am unworthyמֵהַתִּירto looseאֶת־שְׂרוֹךְthe lace ofנְעָלָיוhis sandals;הוּאheיִטְבֹּלshall baptizeאֶתְכֶםyouבְּרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁwith the Holy Ghostוּבָאֵשׁ׃and with fire.

    John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

  17. 17

    וּבְיָדוֹAnd in his handהַמִּזְרֶהis the winnowing fan,לְהָבֵרto cleanseאֶת־גָּרְנוֹhis threshing-floor,וְיֶאֱסֹףand to gatherאֶת־דְּגָנוֹhis grainאֶל־אוֹצָרוֹunto his storehouse;וְאֶת־הַמֹּץbut the chaffיִשְׂרְפֶנּוּhe will burnבָּאֵשׁin a fireאֲשֶׁרthatלֹא־תִּכְבֶּה׃shall not be quenched.

    Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

  18. 18

    וְכֵןAnd thusבִּדְבָרִיםwith wordsאֲחֵרִיםotherהַרְבֵּהmanyהוֹכִיחַhe admonishedוַיְבַשֵׂרand preached glad tidings toאֶת־הָעָם׃the people.

    And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

  19. 19

    וְהוֹרְדוֹסBut Herodשַׂר־רֹבַעthe tetrarchהַמְּדִינָהof the province,אֲשֶׁרwhenהוּכַחhe was reprovedעַל־יָדוֹby his handעַל־דְּבַרconcerningהוֹרוֹדְיָהHerodiasאֵשֶׁתthe wife ofאָחִיוhis brotherפִּילִפּוֹסPhilip,וְעַל־כׇּל־הָרָעand concerning all the evilאֲשֶׁרthatעָשָׂהhad doneהוֹרְדוֹס׃Herod,

    But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

  20. 20

    הוֹסִיףaddedעַל־כׇּל־אֵלֶּהupon all theseגַּםalsoאֶת־זֹאתthis,וַיַּסְגֵּרthat he shut upאֶת־יוֹחָנָןJohnבְּמִשְׁמָר׃in prison.

    Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

  21. 21

    וּבְהִטָּבֵלAnd when were baptizedכׇּל־הָעָםall the people,גַּם־יֵשׁוּעַalso Jesusנִטְבָּלwas baptized,וַיְהִיand it came to pass,הוּאwhile heמִתְפַּלֵּלwas praying,וְהִנֵּהbehold,הַשָּׁמַיִםthe heavensנִפְתָּחוּ׃were opened,

    Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

  22. 22

    וַיֵּרֶדand descendedעָלָיוupon himרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁthe Holy Ghostבִּדְמוּתin the form ofגּוּףa body,כְּיוֹנָהas a dove,וַיְהִי־קוֹלand there came a voiceמִן־הַשָּׁמַיִםfrom the heavens,לֵאמֹרsaying,אַתָּהYou areבְּנִיmy son,יְדִידִיmy beloved;בְּךָin youרָצִיתִי׃I have delighted.

    And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

  23. 23

    וְיֵשׁוּעַAnd Jesusהֵחֵלbeganמַעֲשֵׂהוּhis work,וְהוּאand heכְּבֶן־שְׁלשִׁיםwas as a son of thirtyשָׁנָהyears;וְהוּאand heנֶחְשָׁבwas reckonedלְבֶן־יוֹסֵףas the son of Joseph,בֶּן־עֵלִי׃son of Heli,

    And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,

    בֶּן־מַתָּתWhich was the son of Matthat,בֶּן־לֵוִיwhich was the son of Levi,בֶּן־מַלְכִּיwhich was the son of Melchi,בֶּן־יַנַּיwhich was the son of Jannai,בֶּן־יוֹסֵף׃which was the son of Joseph,

    Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,

    בֶּן־מַתִּתְיָהWhich was the son of Mattithiah,בֶּן־אָמוֹץwhich was the son of Amoz,בֶּן־נַחוּםwhich was the son of Nahum,בֶּן־חֶסְלִיwhich was the son of Esli,בֶּן־נַגָּי׃which was the son of Naggai,
