   Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

   And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

   As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

   כׇּל־גֶּיאkol-geevery valleyיִנָּשֵׂאyin/na/SEwill be lifted upוְכׇל־הַרve/KHOL-harand every mountainוְגִבְעָהve/giv/Aand hillיִשְׁפָּלוּyish/PA/luwill be made lowוְהָיָהve/ha/YAand will beהֶעָקֹבhe/a/KOVthe crookedלְמִישׁוֹרle/mi/SHORa level placeוְהָרְכָסִיםve/ha/re/kha/SIMand the rough placesלְבִקְעָה׃le/vik/Aa valley

   Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

   וְרָאוּve/ra/Uand will seeכׇל־בָּשָׂרkhol-ba/SARall fleshאֵת־יְשׁוּעַתet-ye/shu/ATthe salvation ofאֱלֹהִים׃e/lo/HIMGod

   And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֶל־הֲמוֹןel-ha/MONto the crowd ofהָעָםha/AMthe peopleהַיֹּצְאִיםhay/yots/IMwho went outלְהִטָּבֵלle/hit/ta/VELto be baptizedעַל־יָדוֹal-ya/DOby himאַתֶּםat/TEMyouיַלְדֵיyal/DEoffspring ofהַצִּפְעוֹנִיםhats/tsif/o/NIMvipersמִיmiwhoהִזְהִירhiz/HIRwarnedאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouלָנוּסla/NUSto fleeמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEfromהַקֶּצֶףhak/KE/tsefthe wrathהַבָּא׃hab/BAcoming

   Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

   Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

   וּכְבָרu/khe/VARand alreadyהוּשַׂםhu/SAMis putהַגַּרְזֶןhag/gar/ZENthe axeעַל־שֹׁרֶשׁal-SHO/reshupon the root ofהָעֵצִיםha/e/TSIMthe treesוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdכׇל־עֵץkhol-etsevery treeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatאֵינֶנּוּe/NEN/nuis notעֹשֶׂהo/SEmakingפְּרִיpe/RIfruitטוֹבtovgoodיִגָּדַעyig/ga/DAwill be cut downוְהֻשְׁלַךְve/hush/LAKHand thrownבָּאֵשׁ׃ba/ESHinto the fire

   And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

    וַיִּשְׁאָלֵהוּvay/yish/a/LE/huand asked himהֲמוֹןha/MONthe crowd ofהָעָםha/AMthe peopleלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingמָהmawhatאֵפוֹאe/FOthenנַעֲשֶׂה׃na/a/SEshall we do

    And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

    וַיַּעַןvay/YA/anand he answeredוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themמִיmiwhoeverאֲשֶׁר־לוֹa/SHER-lohasכֻּתֳּנוֹתkut/to/NOTtunicsשְׁתַּיִםSHTA/yimtwoיִתֵּןyit/TENlet him giveלַאֲשֶׁרla/a/SHERto him whoאֵין־לוֹen-lohas noneוּמִיu/MIand whoeverאֲשֶׁר־לוֹa/SHER-lohasמָזוֹןma/ZONfoodכֵּןkensoיַעֲשֶׂהya/a/SElet him doגַּם־הוּא׃gam-hulikewise

    He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

    וַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand cameגַם־מוֹכְסִיםgam-mokh/SIMalso tax collectorsלְהִטָּבֵלle/hit/ta/VELto be baptizedוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himרַבִּיrab/BIrabbiמַה־נַּעֲשֶׂה׃ma-na/a/SEwhat shall we do

    Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

13. 13

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themאַל־תִּגְבּוּal-tig/BUdo not collectיוֹתֵרyo/TERmoreמֵחָקְכֶם׃me/cha/ke/KHEMthan your due

    And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

14. 14

    וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּvay/yish/a/lu/HUand asked himגַּם־אַנְשֵׁיgam-an/SHEalso the men ofהַצָּבָאhats/tsa/VAthe armyלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingוַאֲנַחְנוּva/a/NACH/nuand weמַה־נַּעֲשֶׂהma-na/a/SEwhat shall we doוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMto themאַל־תַּחְמֹסוּal-tach/MO/sudo no violence toאִישׁishany manוְאַל־תַּעַשְׁקוּve/AL-ta/ash/KUand oppress notוְדַיve/DAYand enoughלָכֶםla/KHEMfor youבִּשְׂכַרְכֶם׃bis/khar/KHEMwith your wages

    And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passכַּאֲשֶׁר־חִכָּהka/a/SHER-chik/KAas were waitingהָעָםha/AMthe peopleוְכֻלָּםve/khul/LAMand all of themחֹשְׁבִיםchosh/VIMwere thinkingבְּלִבָּםbe/lib/BAMin their heartלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingהֲיוֹחָנָןHa/yo/cha/NANwhether Johnהוּאhuhe isהַמָּשִׁיחַham/Ma/SHI/achthe Messiahאִם־לֹא׃im-loor not

    And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

    וַיַּעַןvay/YA/anand answeredיוֹחָנָןYo/cha/NANJohnוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלְכֻלָּםle/khul/LAMto them allהֵן־אֲנִיhen-a/NIbehold Iטוֹבֵלto/VELbaptizeאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouבַּמָּיִםbam/MA/yimwith waterאֲבָלa/VALbutבּוֹאbocomeיָבוֹאya/VOwill comeהֶחָזָקhe/cha/ZAKthe one strongerמִמֶּנִּיmim/MEN/nithan Iאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhomקָטֹנְתִּיka/TON/tiI am too smallמֵהַתִּירme/hat/TIRto untieאֶת־שְׂרוֹךְet-se/ROKHthe strap ofנְעָלָיוne/a/LAYVhis sandalsהוּאhuheיִטְבֹּלyit/BOLwill baptizeאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouבְּרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁbe/RU/ach-hak/KO/deshwith the Holy Spiritוּבָאֵשׁ׃u/va/ESHand with fire

    John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

17. 17

    וּבְיָדוֹu/ve/ya/DOand in his handהַמִּזְרֶהham/miz/REthe winnowing forkלְהָבֵרle/ha/VERto cleanאֶת־גָּרְנוֹet-ga/re/NOhis threshing floorוְיֶאֱסֹףve/ye/e/SOFand gatherאֶת־דְּגָנוֹet-de/ga/NOhis grainאֶל־אוֹצָרוֹel-o/tsa/ROto his storehouseוְאֶת־הַמֹּץve/ET-ham/MOTSand the chaffיִשְׂרְפֶנּוּyis/re/fen/NUhe will burnבָּאֵשׁba/ESHin a fireאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹא־תִּכְבֶּה׃lo-tikh/BEwill not be quenched

    Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

18. 18

    וְכֵןve/KHENand soבִּדְבָרִיםbid/va/RIMwith wordsאֲחֵרִיםa/che/RIMotherהַרְבֵּהhar/BEmanyהוֹכִיחַho/KHI/achhe exhortedוַיְבַשֵּׂרvay/vas/SERand brought good news toאֶת־הָעָם׃et-ha/AMthe people

    And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

19. 19

    וְהוֹרְדוֹסve/Hor/DOSbut Herodשַׂר־רֹבַעsar-RO/varuler of a quarter ofהַמְּדִינָהham/me/di/NAthe provinceאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהוּכַחhu/KHACHwas reprovedעַל־יָדוֹal-ya/DOby himעַל־דְּבַרal-de/VARconcerningהוֹרוֹדְיָהHo/rod/YAHerodiasאֵשֶׁתE/shetthe wife ofאָחִיוa/CHIVhis brotherפִּילִפּוֹסPi/lip/POSPhilipוְעַל־כׇּל־הָרָעve/AL-kol-ha/RAand concerning all the evilאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatעָשָׂהa/SAhad doneהוֹרְדוֹס׃Hor/DOSHerod

    But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

    הוֹסִיףho/SIFaddedעַל־כׇּל־אֵלֶּהal-kol-EL/leupon all theseגַּםgamalsoאֶת־זֹאתet-zotthisוַיַּסְגֵּרvay/yas/GERand he shut upאֶת־יוֹחָנָןet-Yo/cha/NANJohnבְּמִשְׁמָר׃be/mish/MARin custody

    Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

21. 21

    וּבְהִטָּבֵלu/ve/hit/ta/VELand when were baptizedכׇּל־הָעָםkol-ha/AMall the peopleגַּם־יֵשׁוּעַgam-Ye/SHU/aalso Jesusנִטְבָּלnit/BALwas baptizedוַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passהוּאhuheמִתְפַּלֵּלmit/pal/LELwas prayingוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdהַשָּׁמַיִםhash/sha/MA/yimthe heavensנִפְתָּחוּ׃nif/TA/chuwere opened

    Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

    וַיֵּרֶדvay/YE/redand came downעָלָיוa/LAYVupon himרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁRU/ach-Hak/KO/deshthe Holy Spiritבִּדְמוּתbid/MUTin the likeness ofגּוּףgufa bodyכְּיוֹנָהke/yo/NAlike a doveוַיְהִי־קוֹלvay/HI-koland there was a voiceמִן־הַשָּׁמַיִםmin-hash/sha/MA/yimfrom the heavensלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאַתָּהat/TAyou areבְּנִיbe/NIMy Sonיְדִידִיye/di/DIMy belovedבְּךָbe/KHAin youרָצִיתִי׃ra/tsi/TII delight

    And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
