1. 1

   וַיְהִיAnd it came to passבַּיָּמִיםin the daysהָהֵםthoseוַיֵּצֵאthat went forthצַוa decreeמֵאֵתfromקֵיסַרCaesarאוֹגוּסְטוֹסAugustusלִמְנוֹתto numberאֶת־כׇּל־יֹשְׁבֵיall the inhabitants ofתֵבֵל׃the world.

   And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

2. 2

   וְהַמִּפְקָדAnd the censusהַזֶּהthisהָיָהwasהָרִאשׁוֹןthe first,בִּהְיוֹתwhen wasקוּרִינִיּוֹסCyreniusשַׁלִּיטrulerבְּסוּרְיָא׃in Syria.

   (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3. 3

   וַיֵּלְכוּAnd wentכֻלָּםall of themלְהִתְפָּקֵדto be numbered,אִישׁeach manלְעִירוֹ׃unto his own city.

   And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4. 4

   וַיַּעַלAnd went upגַּם־יוֹסֵףalso Josephמִן־הַגָּלִילfrom the Galilee,מֵעִירfrom the city ofנְצֶרֶתNazareth,אֶל־יְהוּדָהunto Judah,לְעִירto the city ofדָּוִדDavid,הַנִּקְרֵאתwhich is calledבֵּית־לָחֶםBethlehem;כִּי־הָיָהfor he wasמִבֵּיתof the house ofדָּוִדDavidוּמִמִּשְׁפַּחְתּוֹ׃and of his family;

   And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

   לְהִתְפָּקֵדto be numberedעִם־מִרְיָםwith Maryהַמְאֹרָשָׂהwho was betrothedלוֹunto him,וְהִיאand sheהָרָה׃was with child.

   To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6. 6

   וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,בִּהְיוֹתָםwhile they wereשָׁםthere,וַיִּמְלְאוּthat were fulfilledיָמֶיהָher daysלָלֶדֶת׃to give birth.

   And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

   וַתֵּלֶדAnd she boreאֶת־בְּנָהּher son,הַבְּכוֹרthe firstborn,וַתְּחַתְּלֵהוּand swaddled him,וַתַּשְׁכִּיבֵהוּand laid himבָאֵבוּסin the manger;כִּיforלֹא־הָיָהthere was noלָהֶםfor themמָקוֹםplaceבַּמָּלוֹן׃in the inn.

   And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8. 8

   וְרֹעִיםAnd shepherdsהָיוּwereבָּאָרֶץin the landהַהִיאthat,לֵנִיםlodgingבַּשָּׂדֶהin the field,וְשֹׁמְרִיםand keepingאֶת־מִשְׁמְרוֹתthe watches ofהַלַּיְלָהthe nightעַל־עֶדְרָם׃over their flock.

   And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9. 9

   וְהִנֵּהAnd behold,מַלְאַךְan angel ofיְהוָֹהthe LORDנִצָּבstoodעֲלֵיהֶםover them,וּכְבוֹדand the glory ofיְהוָֹהthe LORDהוֹפִיעַshoneעֲלֵיהֶםupon themמִסָּבִיבround about,וַיִּירְאוּand they fearedיִרְאָהa fearגְדוֹלָה׃great.

   And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10. 10

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto themהַמַּלְאָךְthe angel,אַל־תִּירָאוּFear you not,כִּיforהִנְנִיbehold, Iמְבַשֵּׂרbring good tidings toאֶתְכֶםyou,שִׂמְחָהjoyגְדוֹלָהgreat,אֲשֶׁרwhichתִּהְיֶהshall beלְכׇל־הָעָם׃unto all the people.

    And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11. 11

    כִּיForהַיּוֹםthis dayיֻלַּדis bornלָכֶםunto youמוֹשִׂיעַa Saviour,אֲשֶׁרwhoהוּאisהַמָּשִׁיחַthe Christ,הָאָדוֹןthe Lord,בְּעִירin the city ofדָּוִד׃David.

    For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12. 12

    וְזֶהAnd thisלָכֶםis to youהָאוֹתthe sign:אֲשֶׁרthatתִּמְצְאוּןyou shall findיֶלֶדa babeמָחְתָּלswaddledוְשֹׁכֵבand lyingבָּאֵבוּס׃in the manger.

    And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13. 13

    וּפִתְאֹםAnd suddenlyהָיָהthere wasאֵצֶלbesideהַמַּלְאָךְthe angelהֲמוֹןa multitude ofצְבָאthe host ofהַשָּׁמָיִםheaven,וְהֵםand they wereמְשַׁבְּחִיםpraisingאֶת־הָאֱלֹהִיםGodוְאֹמְרִים׃and saying,

    And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14. 14

    כָּבוֹדGloryבַּמְּרוֹמִיםin the heightsלֵאלֹהִיםto God,וּבָאָרֶץand on earthשָׁלוֹםpeace,בְּאַנְשֵׁיunto men ofרְצוֹנוֹ׃his good will.

    Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15. 15

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כַּאֲשֶׁרwhenעָלוּascendedמֵעֲלֵיהֶםfrom over themהַמַּלְאָכִיםthe angelsהַשָּׁמָיְמָהto heaven,וַיֹּאמְרוּthat saidהָרֹעִיםthe shepherds,אִישׁeach manאֶל־רֵעֵהוּunto his fellow,נַעְבְּרָה־נָּאLet us now go overעַדuntoבֵּית־לֶחֶםBethlehem,וְנִרְאֶהand let us seeהַמַּעֲשֶׂהthe deedהַזֶּהthis,אֲשֶׁרwhichהוֹדִיעָנוּhath made known to usיְהוָֹה׃the LORD.

    And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16. 16

    וַיְמַהֲרוּAnd they hastenedוַיָּבֹאוּand cameוַיִּמְצְאוּand foundאֶת־מִרְיָםMaryוְאֶת־יוֹסֵףand Joseph,וְאֶת־הַיֶּלֶדand the babeוְהוּאwhile he wasשֹׁכֵבlyingבָּאֵבוּס׃in the manger.

    And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17. 17

    וַיִּרְאוּAnd they saw,וַיַּשְׁמִיעוּand made knownאֶת־הַדָּבָרthe wordהַנֶּאֱמָרwhich was spokenאֲלֵיהֶםunto themעַל־הַנַּעַרconcerning the childהַזֶּה׃this.

    And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18. 18

    וְכׇל־הַשֹּׁמְעִיםAnd all who heardתָּמְהוּmarvelledעַלatהַדְּבָרִיםthe thingsאֲשֶׁר־דִּבְּרוּwhich were spokenאֲלֵיהֶםunto themהָרֹעִים׃by the shepherds.

    And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19. 19

    וּמִרְיָםAnd Maryשׇׁמְרָהkeptאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםthe wordsהָאֵלֶּהthese,וַתְּחַשְּׁבֵםand pondered themבְּלִבָּהּ׃in her heart.

    But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20. 20

    וַיָּשׁוּבוּAnd returnedהָרֹעִיםthe shepherds,וְהֵםand they wereמְהַלֲּלִיםextollingוּמְשַׁבְּחִיםand praisingאֶת־הָאֱלֹהִיםGodעַל־כֹּלfor allאֲשֶׁרthatשָׁמְעוּthey had heardוְרָאוּand seen,כְּפִי־אֲשֶׁרaccording asנֶאֱמַרit was spokenאֲלֵיהֶם׃unto them.

    And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

21. 21

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,בִּמְלֹאתwhen were fulfilledלַנַּעַרfor the boyשְׁמֹנָהeightיָמִיםdays,וַיִּמּוֹלthat he was circumcised,וַיִּקָּרֵאand was calledשְׁמוֹhis nameיֵשׁוּעַJesus,כַּשֵּׁםas the nameאֲשֶׁרwhichקָרָא־לוֹcalled himהַמַּלְאָךְthe angelבְּטֶרֶםbeforeהֹרָהhe was conceivedבַבָּטֶן׃in the womb.

    And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

22. 22

    וַיִּמְלְאוּAnd when were fulfilledיְמֵיthe days ofטׇהֳרָםtheir purificationכְּתוֹרַתaccording to the law ofמשֶׁהMoses,וַיַּעֲלֻהוּthey brought him upיְרוּשָׁלַיִםto Jerusalem,לְהַעֲמִידוֹto present himלִפְנֵיbeforeיְהוָֹה׃the LORD;

    And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

23. 23

    כַּכָּתוּבas it is writtenבְּתוֹרַתin the law ofיְהוָֹהthe LORD,כׇּל־זָכָרEvery maleפֶּטֶרthat opensרֶחֶםthe wombיִקָּרֵאshall be calledקֹדֶשׁholyלַיְהוָֹה׃unto the LORD;

    (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

24. 24

    וּלְהַקְרִיבand to offerקׇרְבָּןan offeringכְּמִצְוַתaccording to the commandment ofתּוֹרַתthe law ofיְהוָֹהthe LORD,שְׁתֵּיtwoתֹרִיםturtledoves,אוֹorשְׁנֵיtwoבְּנֵיyoung ofיוֹנָה׃a dove.

    And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

25. 25

    וְהִנֵּהAnd behold,אִישׁa manבִּירוּשָׁלַיִםwas in Jerusalemוּשְׁמוֹwhose nameשִׁמְעוֹןwas Simeon;וְהוּאand heאִישׁwas a manצַדִּיקrighteousוְחָסִידand pious,מְחַכֶּהawaitingלְנֶחָמַתthe consolation ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsrael,וְרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁand the Holy Ghostהָיְתָהwasעָלָיו׃upon him.

    And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26. 26

    וְלוֹAnd to himנִגְלָהwas revealedבְּרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁby the Holy Ghostכִּיthatלֹאnotיִרְאֶה־מָּוֶתshould he see death,עַדuntilאִם־רָאָהhe had seenאֶת־מְשִׁיחַthe Anointed ofיְהוָֹה׃the LORD.

    And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

27. 27

    וַיָּבֹאAnd he cameבָּרוּחַin the Spiritאֶל־הַמִּקְדָּשׁunto the temple;וַיְהִיand it came to pass,כַּאֲשֶׁרwhenהֵבִיאוּbrought inהוֹרָיוhis parentsאֶת־הַנַּעַרthe boyיֵשׁוּעַJesus,לַעֲשׂוֹתto doלוֹfor himכְּחֻקַּתaccording to the statute ofהַתּוֹרָה׃the law,

    And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

28. 28

    וַיִּקָּחֵהוּthat he took himעַל־זְרֹעוֹתָיוupon his arms,וַיְבָרֶךְand blessedאֶת־הָאֱלֹהִיםGod,וַיֹּאמַר׃and said,

    Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29. 29

    עַתָּהNowתִּפְטַרlettest you departאֶת־עַבְדֶּךָyour servant,כִּדְבָרְךָaccording to your word,אֲדֹנָיO Lord,בְּשָׁלוֹם׃in peace;

    Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30. 30

    כִּי־רָאוּfor have seenעֵינַיmine eyesאֶת־יְשׁוּעָתֶךָ׃your salvation,

    For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

31. 31

    אֲשֶׁרwhichהֲכִינוֹתָyou have preparedלִפְנֵיbeforeכׇּל־הָעַמִּים׃all the peoples,

    Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32. 32

    אוֹרa lightלְהָאִירto enlightenעֵינֵיthe eyes ofהַגּוֹיִםthe nations,וְתִפְאֶרֶתand the glory ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelעַמֶּךָ׃your people.

    A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

33. 33

    וְאָבִיוAnd his fatherוְאִמּוֹand his motherתְּמֵהִיםmarvelledעַל־הַדְּבָרִיםat the thingsהַנֶּאֱמָרִיםthat were spokenעָלָיו׃concerning him.

    And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

34. 34

    וַיְבָרֶךְAnd blessedאוֹתָםthemשִׁמְעוֹןSimeon,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֶל־מִרְיָםunto Maryאִמּוֹhis mother,הִנֵּה־זֶהBehold, this oneמוּסָּדis appointedלְמִכְשׁוֹלfor a stumbling-blockוְלִתְקוּמָהand for the risingלְרַבִּיםof manyבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלin Israel,וּלְאוֹתand for a sign ofמְרִיבָה׃contention;

    And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

35. 35

    וּבְנַפְשֵׁךְand through your soulתַּחְתֹּרshall pierceחָרֶבa sword,לְמַעַןthatאֲשֶׁר־תִּגָּלֶינָהmay be revealedמַחְשְׁבוֹתthe thoughts ofלְבַבthe heart ofרַבִּים׃many.

    (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

36. 36

    וְאִשָּׁהAnd a woman,נְבִיאָהa prophetess,הָיְתָהwasשָּׁםthere,חַנָּהHannahבַּת־פְּנוּאֵלdaughter of Penuel,מִשֵּׁבֶטof the tribe ofאָשֵׁרAsher;וְהִיאand sheבָּאָהwas advancedבַיָּמִיםin days,וְיָשְׁבָהand had dweltעִם־בַּעְלָהּwith her husbandשֶׁבַעsevenשָׁנִיםyearsאַחֲרֵיafterבְתוּלֶיהָ׃her virginity;

    And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

37. 37

    וְהִיאand sheאַלְמָנָהwas a widowכְּאַרְבַּעof about fourוּשְׁמֹנִיםand eightyשָׁנָהyears,וְלֹאand notמָשָׁהdeparted sheמִן־הַמִּקְדָּשׁfrom the temple,וַתַּעֲבֹדand servedאֶת־אֱלֹהִיםGodבְּצוֹםin fastingוּבְתַחֲנוּנִיםand in supplicationsלַיְלָהnightוָיוֹם׃and day.

    And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

38. 38

    וַתָּקׇםAnd she aroseבַּשָּׁעָהin the hourהַהִיאthat,וַתִּגַּשׁand drew nearלְהֹדוֹתto give thanksלַיְהוָֹהunto the LORD,וַתְּדַבֵּרand spakeעָלָיוof himבְּאׇזְנֵיin the ears ofכׇל־הַמְחַכִּיםall who awaitedלַגְּאֻלָּהthe redemptionבִּירוּשָׁלָיִם׃in Jerusalem.

    And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

39. 39

    וַיְכַלּוּAnd when they had finishedאֶת־הַכֹּלeverythingכְּתוֹרַתaccording to the law ofיְהוָֹהthe LORD,וַיָּשׁוּבוּthey returnedהַגָּלִילָהto the Galilee,אֶל־נְצֶרֶתunto Nazarethעִירָם׃their city.

    And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

40. 40

    וַיִּגְדַּלAnd grewהַנַּעַרthe boy,וַיֶּחֱזַקand waxed strongבָּרוּחַin spirit,וַיִּמָּלֵאand was filled withחׇכְמָהwisdom;וְחֶסֶדand the grace ofאֱלֹהִיםGodעִמּוֹ׃was with him.

    And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

41. 41

    וְעָלוּAnd went upהוֹרָיוhis parentsיְרוּשָׁלַיִםto Jerusalemמִדֵּיyear byשָׁנָהyearבְשָׁנָהyearלָחֹגto celebrateאֶת־חַגthe feast ofהַפָּסַח׃the Passover.

    Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

42. 42

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,בִּהְיוֹתוֹwhen he wasבֶּן־שְׁתֵּים־עֶשְׂרֵהtwelveשָׁנָהyears old,וַיַּעֲלוּthat they went upיְרוּשָׁלַיִםto Jerusalemכְּמִשְׁפַּטaccording to the custom ofהֶחָג׃the feast.

    And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

43. 43

    וַיִּמְלְאוּAnd when were fulfilledהַיָּמִיםthe days,וַיָּשׁוּבוּand they returned,וַיִּוָּתֵרremained behindהַנַּעַרthe boyיֵשׁוּעַJesusבִּירוּשָׁלַיִםin Jerusalem;וְהוֹרָיוand his parentsלֹאnotיָדָעוּ׃knew.

    And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

44. 44

    וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they thoughtעִם־חֶבֶלthat within the company ofהָאֹרְחִיםthe travelersהוּאhe was,וַיֵּלְכוּand they wentכְּדֶרֶךְa journey ofיוֹםa day,וַיְבַקְשֻׁהוּand they sought himבֵּיןamongהַקְּרוֹבִיםthe kinsfolkוְהַמְיֻדָּעִים׃and acquaintances.

    But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

45. 45

    וְלֹאAnd notמְצָאֻהוּdid they find him;וַיָּשֻׁבוּand they returnedיְרוּשָׁלָיִםto Jerusalem,לְבַקְשׁוֹ׃to seek him.

    And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

46. 46

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,מִקֵּץat the end ofשְׁלשֶׁתthreeיָמִיםdays,וַיִּמְצָאֻהוּthat they found himבַּמִּקְדָּשׁin the temple,וְהוּאand he wasיֹשֵׁבsittingבְּתוֹךְin the midst ofהַמּוֹרִיםthe teachers,וְשֹׁמֵעַand listeningאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,וְשֹׁאֵלand questioningאֹתָם׃them.

    And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

47. 47

    וְכׇל־הַשֹּׁמְעִיםAnd all who heardאֹתוֹhimתָּמָהוּwere astonishedעַל־שִׂכְלוֹat his understandingוְעַל־תְּשׁוּבֹתָיו׃and at his answers.

    And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

48. 48

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כִּרְאוֹתָםwhen they sawאֹתוֹhim,וַיִּשְׁתּוֹמֲמוּthat they were amazed;וַתֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto himאִמּוֹhis mother,בְּנִיMy son,לָמָּהwhyכָּכָהthusעָשִׂיתָhave you doneלָּנוּunto us?הִנֵּהBehold,אָבִיךָyour fatherוְאָנֹכִיand Iבְּעַצְּבַת־לֵבwith grief of heartבִּקַּשְׁנוּךָ׃have sought you.

    And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

49. 49

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,לָמָּהWhyזֶּהis itבִּקַּשְׁתֶּםyou soughtאֹתִיme?הֲלֹאDid you notיְדַעְתֶּםknowכִּיthatאֶהְיֶהI must beבַּאֲשֶׁרin that which isלְאָבִי׃my Father's?

    And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

50. 50

    וְהֵםAnd theyלֹאnotהֵבִינוּunderstoodאֶת־הַדָּבָרthe wordאֲשֶׁרwhichדִבֶּרhe spakeאֲלֵיהֶם׃unto them.

    And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

51. 51

    וַיֵּרֶדAnd he went downאִתָּםwith themוַיָּבֹאand cameאֶל־נְצָרֶתunto Nazareth,וַיִּכָּנַעand was submissiveלָהֶםunto them;וְאִמּוֹand his motherשׇׁמְרָהkeptבְלִבָּהּin her heartאֵת־כׇּל־הַדְּבָרִיםall the wordsהָאֵלֶּה׃these.

    And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52. 52

    וְיֵשׁוּעַAnd Jesusהֹלֵךְwent onוְגָדֵלand grewבְּחׇכְמָהin wisdomוּבְקוֹמָהand in stature,וּבְחֵןand in favorלִפְנֵיbeforeאֱלֹהִיםGodוְאָדָם׃and man.

    And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
