1. 1

   אַחֲרֵיAfterאֲשֶׁרthatרַבִּיםmanyהוֹאִילוּhave undertakenלְחַבֵּרto composeסִפּוּרa narrative ofהַמַּעֲשִׂיםthe thingsאֲשֶׁרwhichנֶאֶמְנוּwere establishedבִשְׁלֵמוּתin fullnessבְּתוֹכֵנוּ׃among us,

   Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

2. 2

   כַּאֲשֶׁרasמְסָרוּםthey delivered themלָנוּto us,הָרֹאִיםthey who sawאֹתָםthemבְּעֵינֵיהֶםwith their eyesמִתְּחִלָּהfrom the beginning,וַאֲשֶׁרand whoהָיוּwereמְשָׁרֲתֵיministers ofהַדָּבָר׃the word;

   Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

   חָשַׁבְתִּיI thought itלְטוֹבgood,גַּם־אֲנִיI also,הַחֹקֵרhaving investigatedאַחַרafterכׇּל־הַדְּבָרִיםall the mattersהֵיטֵבthoroughlyמֵרֵאשִׁיתָםfrom their beginning,לְכָתְבָםto write themכְּסִדְרָםin their orderאֵלֶיךָunto you,הָאַדִּירthe nobleתְּאוֹפִילוֹס׃Theophilus,

   It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

   לְמַעַןthatתֵּדַעyou mayest knowאֱמֶתthe truth ofהָאֲמָרִיםthe sayingsאֲשֶׁרwhichלֻמָּדְתָּ׃you were taught.

   That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

   כֹּהֵןA priestהָיָהthere wasבִּימֵיin the days ofהוֹרְדוֹסHerodמֶלֶךְking ofאֶרֶץthe land ofיְהוּדָהJudah,זְכַרְיָהZechariahשְׁמוֹhis name,מִמִּשְׁמֶרֶתof the course ofאֲבִיָּהAbijah:וְלוֹand he hadאִשָּׁהa wifeמִבְּנוֹתof the daughters ofאַהֲרֹןAaron,וּשְׁמָהּand her name wasאֱלִישֶׁבַע׃Elisheba.

   There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judæa, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

   וּשְׁנֵיהֶםAnd both of themצַדִּיקִיםwere righteousלִפְנֵיbeforeהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,וְהֹלְכֵיwalkers inתֹםintegrityבְּכׇל־מִצְוֹתin all the commandments ofיְהוָֹהthe LORDוּבְחֻקֹּתָיו׃and in his statutes.

   And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

7. 7

   וְלָהֶםAnd to themאֵיןthere was noוָלָדchild,כִּיforאֱלִישֶׁבַעElishebaעֲקָרָהwas barren,וּשְׁנֵיהֶםand both of themבָּאוּwere advancedבַיָּמִים׃in days.

   And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

8. 8

   וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,הַיּוֹםwhen the dayבְּכַהֲנוֹof his priestly service cameלִפְנֵיbeforeאֱלֹהִיםGod,בְּסֵדֶרin the order ofמִשְׁמָרוֹ׃his course,

   And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

   לְהַקְטִירto offerקְטֹרֶתincenseלְפִיaccording toגוֹרָלוֹhis lot,כְּמִשְׁפַּטafter the custom ofעֲבוֹדַתthe service ofהַכֹּהֲנִיםthe priests,וַיָּבֹאthat he enteredאֶל־הֵיכַלinto the temple ofיְהוָֹה׃the LORD.

   According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

10. 10

    וְכׇל־קְהַלAnd all the congregation ofהָעָםthe peopleמִתְפַּלֲּלִיםwere prayingבַּחוּץoutsideבְּשַׁעַתat the hour ofהַקְּטֹרֶת׃the incense.

    And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

11. 11

    וְהִנֵּהAnd behold,מַלְאַךְan angel ofיְהוָֹהthe LORDנִרְאָהappearedאֵלָיוunto him,עֹמֵדstandingמִימִיןon the right ofמִזְבַּחthe altar ofהַקְּטֹרֶת׃the incense.

    And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12. 12

    וַיַּרְאAnd saw himזְכַרְיָהZechariah,וַיִּבָּהֵלand was dismayed,וְאֵימָהand terrorנָפְלָהfellעָלָיו׃upon him.

    And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13. 13

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֵלָיוunto himהַמַּלְאָךְthe angel,אַל־תִּירָאFear not,זְכַרְיָהוּZechariah,כִּיforנִשְׁמְעָהis heardתְּפִלָּתֶךָyour prayer,וֶאֱלִישֶׁבַעand Elishebaאִשְׁתְּךָyour wifeתֵּלֵדshall bearלְךָto youבֵּןa son,וְקָרָאתָand you shall callשְׁמוֹhis nameיוֹחָנָן׃John.

    But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

14. 14

    וְהָיָה־לְךָAnd he shall be unto youלְשִׂמְחָהfor joyוָגִילand gladness;וְרַבִּיםand manyיִשְׂמְחוּshall rejoiceבְּהִוָּלְדוֹ׃at his birth.

    And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

15. 15

    כִּי־גָדוֹלFor greatיִהְיֶהshall he beלִפְנֵיbeforeיְהוָֹהthe LORD,וְיַיִןand wineוְשֵׁכָרand strong drinkלֹאnotיִשְׁתֶּהshall he drink,וְרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁand with the Holy Ghostיִמָּלֵאhe shall be filled,מִבֶּטֶןfrom the womb ofאִמּוֹ׃his mother.

    For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

16. 16

    וְרַבִּיםAnd manyמִבְּנֵיof the sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelיָשִׁיבshall he turnאֶל־יְהוָֹהunto the LORDאֱלֹהֵיהֶם׃their God.

    And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

17. 17

    וְהוּאAnd heיֵלֵךְshall goלְפָנָיוbefore himבְּרוּחַin the spirit ofאֵלִיָּסEliasוּבִגְבוּרָתוֹand in his power,לְהָשִׁיבto turn backלֵבthe heart ofאָבוֹתfathersעַל־בָּנִיםunto sons,וְאֵתandהַסּוֹרֲרִיםthe rebelliousבִּתְבוּנַתunto the understanding ofהַצַּדִּיקִיםthe righteous;לְהַעֲמִידto establishעַםa peopleמוּכָןpreparedלַיהוָֹה׃for the LORD.

    And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

18. 18

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidזְכַרְיָהZechariahאֶל־הַמַּלְאָךְunto the angel,בַּמָּהBy whatאֵדַעshall I knowאֶת־הַדָּבָרmatterהַזֶּהthis?כִּי־אֲנִיfor Iזָקַנְתִּיam grown old,וְאִשְׁתִּיand my wifeבָּאָהis advancedבַיָּמִים׃in days.

    And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

19. 19

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeredהַמַּלְאָךְthe angelוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,אֲנִיI amגַבְרִיאֵלGabriel,הָעוֹמֵדwho standsלִפְנֵיbeforeהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,וְשָׁלוּחַand sentאָנֹכִיam Iלְדַבֵּרto speakאֵלֶיךָunto you,וּלְבַשֶּׂרְךָand to bring you good tidings,אֶת־הַבְּשׂוֹרָהtidingsהַזֹּאת׃this.

    And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

20. 20

    וְהִנְּךָAnd behold, you shall beנֶאֱלָםmute,וְלֹאand notתוּכַלbe ableלְדַבֵּרto speak,עַד־הַיּוֹםuntil the dayאֲשֶׁרwhenיָקוּםshall come to passהַדָּבָרmatterהַזֶּהthis;תַּחַתbecauseכִּי־לֹאthat notהֶאֱמַנְתָּyou did believeלִדְבָרַיmy words,וְהֵםwhichיִמָּלְאוּshall be fulfilledבְּמוֹעֲדָם׃in their appointed time.

    And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

21. 21

    וְהָעָםAnd the peopleהוֹחִילוּwere waitingלִזְכַרְיָהfor Zechariah,וַיִּתְמְהוּand they marvelledכִּי־הִתְמַהְמַהּthat he tarriedבַּהֵיכׇל׃in the temple.

    And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

22. 22

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,בְצֵאתוֹwhen he came out,לֹאnotיָכֹלwas he ableלְדַבֵּרto speakאֲלֵיהֶםunto them:וַיֵּדְעוּand they knewכִּי־מַרְאָהthat a visionרָאָהhe had seenבַּהֵיכׇלin the temple:וַיִּרְמֹזand he gesturedלָהֶםunto them,וְעוֹדֶנּוּand he remainedנֶאֱלָם׃mute.

    And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

23. 23

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כַּאֲשֶׁרwhenמָלְאוּwere fulfilledיְמֵיthe days ofעֲבֹדָתוֹhis service,וַיָּשׇׁבthat he returnedאֶל־בֵּיתוֹ׃to his house.

    And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

24. 24

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passאַחַרafterהַיָּמִיםdaysהָאֵלֶּהthese,וַתַּהַרthat conceivedאֱלִישֶׁבַעElishebaאִשְׁתּוֹhis wife,וַתִּתְחַבֵּאand she hid herselfחֲמִשָּׁהfiveחֳדָשִׁיםmonths,וַתֹּאמַר׃and she said,

    And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

25. 25

    כָּכָהThusעָשָׂהhath doneלִיfor meיְהוָֹהthe LORDבִּימֵיin the daysפָקְדוֹof his visitingאוֹתִיme,לֶאֱסֹףto gather awayאֶת־חֶרְפָּתִיmy reproachמִבְּנֵיfrom among the sons ofאָדָם׃men.

    Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

26. 26

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passבַּחֹדֶשׁin the monthהַשִּׁשִּׁיsixth,וַיִּשְׁלַחthat sentאֱלֹהִיםGodאֶת־גַּבְרִיאֵלGabrielהַמַּלְאָךְthe angelגָּלִילָהto Galilee,אֶל־עִירunto a cityאַחַתcertain,וּשְׁמָהּwhose name wasנְצָרֶת׃Nazareth,

    And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27. 27

    אֶל־בְּתוּלָהunto a virginמְאֹרָשָׂהbetrothedלְאִישׁto a manאֲשֶׁר־שְׁמוֹwhose name wasיוֹסֵףJoseph,מִבֵּיתof the house ofדָּוִדDavid;וְשֵׁםand the name ofהַבְּתוּלָהthe virginמִרְיָם׃was Mary.

    To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

28. 28

    וַיָּבֹאAnd enteredהַמַּלְאָךְthe angelהַחַדְרָהinto the chamberוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלֶיהָunto her,שָׁלוֹםPeaceלָךְbe unto you,אֵשֶׁת־חֵןwoman of favor;יְהוָֹהthe LORDעִמָּךְis with you;בְּרוּכָהblessedאַתְּare youבַּנָּשִׁים׃among women.

    And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

29. 29

    וְהִיאAnd she,בִּרְאוֹתָהּwhen she saw him,נִבְהֲלָהwas alarmedלִדְבָרוֹat his word,וַתֹּאמֶרand she saidבְּלִבָּהּin her heart,מָהWhatהַבְּרָכָהis salutationהַזֹּאת׃this?

    And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

30. 30

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidלָהּunto herהַמַּלְאָךְthe angel,אַל־תִּירְאִיFear not,מִרְיָםMary,כִּי־מָצָאתְfor you have foundחֵןfavorלִפְנֵיbeforeהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

31. 31

    וְהִנָּךְAnd behold, you shall beהָרָהwith child,וְיֹלַדְתְּand shalt bearבֵּןa son,וְקָרָאתְand shalt callאֶת־שְׁמוֹhis nameיֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus.

    And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

32. 32

    וְהוּאHeגָּדוֹלgreatיִהְיֶהshall be,וּבֶן־עֶלְיוֹןand Son of the Most Highיִקָּרֵאshall he be called;וַיהוָֹהand the LORDאֱלֹהִיםGodיִתֶּן־לוֹshall give unto himאֶת־כִּסֵּאthe throne ofדָּוִדDavidאָבִיו׃his father:

    He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33. 33

    וּמָלַךְAnd he shall reignעַל־בֵּיתover the house ofיַעֲקֹבJacobלְעוֹלָםfor everוָעֶדand ever;וּלְמַלְכוּתוֹand to his kingdomאֵיןthere shall be noקֵץ׃end.

    And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

34. 34

    וַתֹּאמֶרAnd saidמִרְיָםMaryאֶל־הַמַּלְאָךְunto the angel,אֵיךְHowיִהְיֶהshall beהַדָּבָרmatterהַזֶּהthis,וַאֲנִיseeing Iאֵינֶנִּיam notיֹדַעַתknowingאִישׁ׃a man?

    Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

35. 35

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeredהַמַּלְאָךְthe angelוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלֶיהָunto her,רוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁThe Holy Ghostתָּבוֹאshall comeעָלַיִךְupon you,וּגְבוּרַתand the power ofעֶלְיוֹןthe Most Highתָּצֵלshall overshadowעָלַיִךְyou;עַל־כֵּןthereforeקָדוֹשׁa holy oneיֵאָמֵרshall be calledלַיִּלוֹדunto the child born,בֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִים׃the Son of God.

    And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

36. 36

    וְהִנֵּהAnd behold,אֱלִישֶׁבַעElishebaקְרוֹבָתֵךְyour kinswoman,אֲשֶׁרwhomקָרְאוּ־לָהּthey calledעֲקָרָהbarren,גַּם־הִיאeven sheהָרָהis with child,לָלֶדֶתto bearבֵּןa sonבְּזִקְנָתָהּin her old age;וְזֶהand this isלָּהּto herהַחֹדֶשׁthe monthהַשִּׁשִּׁי׃sixth.

    And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

37. 37

    כִּיForלֹא־יִפָּלֵאis not too wonderfulמֵאֱלֹהִיםfor Godכׇּל־דָּבָר׃any thing.

    For with God nothing shall be impossible.

38. 38

    וַתֹּאמֶרAnd saidמִרְיָםMary,הִנְנִיBehold I amשִׁפְחַתthe handmaid ofיְהוָֹהthe LORD;יְהִי־לִיlet it be unto meכִּדְבָרֶךָaccording to your word.וַיֵּצֵאAnd went outמֵאִתָּהּfrom herהַמַּלְאָךְ׃the angel.

    And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

39. 39

    וַתָּקׇםAnd aroseמִרְיָםMaryבַּיָּמִיםin daysהָהֵםthose,וַתְּמַהֵרand hastenedלָלֶכֶתto goהָהָרָהto the hill country,אֶל־עִירunto a city ofיְהוּדָה׃Judah;

    And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

40. 40

    וַתָּבֹאAnd she enteredבֵּיתthe house ofזְכַרְיָהZechariah,וַתְּבָרֶךְand greetedאֶת־אֱלִישֶׁבַע׃Elisheba.

    And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

41. 41

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כִּשְׁמֹעַwhen heardאֱלִישֶׁבַעElishebaאֶת־בִּרְכַּתthe greeting ofמִרְיָםMary,וַיִּרְקַדthat leapedהַיֶּלֶדthe childבְּמֵעֶיהָin her womb;וַתִּמָּלֵאand was filledאֱלִישֶׁבַעElishebaרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁ׃with the Holy Ghost.

    And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

42. 42

    וַתִּקְרָאAnd she cried outבְּקוֹלwith a voiceגָּדוֹלloudוַתֹּאמַרand said,בְּרוּכָהBlessedאַתְּare youבַּנָּשִׁיםamong women,וּבָרוּךְand blessed isפְּרִיthe fruit ofבִטְנֵךְ׃your womb.

    And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

43. 43

    וּמַה־לִּיAnd what is this to me,כִּי־אֵםthat the mother ofאֲדֹנִיmy Lordבָּאָהcomesאֵלָי׃unto me?

    And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

44. 44

    כִּיForקוֹלthe voice ofבִּרְכָתֵךְyour greetingבָּאcameבְאׇזְנָיin mine ears,וְהִנֵּהand behold,רָקַדleapedבְּשִׂמְחָהwith joyהַיֶּלֶדthe childבְּמֵעָי׃in my womb.

    For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

45. 45

    וְאַשְׁרֵיAnd blessed isהַמַּאֲמִינָהshe who believed,כִּיforהִמָּלֵאshall surelyיִמָּלֵאbe fulfilledאֲשֶׁרthat whichדֻּבַּר־לָהּwas spoken to herמֵאֵתfromיְהוָֹה׃the LORD.

    And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

46. 46

    וַתֹּאמֶרAnd saidמִרְיָםMary,רוֹמֲמָהDoth magnifyנַפְשִׁיmy soulאֶת־יְהוָֹה׃the LORD,

    And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47. 47

    וַתָּגֶלand rejoicesרוּחִיmy spiritבֵּאלֹהֵיin the God ofיִשְׁעִי׃my salvation.

    And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

48. 48

    אֲשֶׁרForרָאָהhe hath lookedבׇּעֳנִיon the affliction ofאֲמָתוֹhis handmaid;כִּיforהִנֵּהbehold,מֵעַתָּהfrom nowיְאַשְּׁרוּנִיshall call me blessedכׇּל־הַדֹּרוֹת׃all the generations.

    For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

49. 49

    כִּיForגְדֹלוֹתgreat thingsעָשָׂהhath doneלִיto meשַׁדָּיthe Almighty;וְקָדוֹשׁand holyשְׁמוֹ׃is his name.

    For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

50. 50

    וְחַסְדּוֹAnd his lovingkindnessלְדוֹרto generationדּוֹרִיםof generationsעַלis uponיְרֵאָיו׃them that fear him.

    And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

51. 51

    גְּבוּרוֹתMighty deedsעָשָׂהhath he doneבִּזְרֹעוֹwith his arm;פִּזַּרhe hath scatteredגֵּאִיםthe proudבִּמְזִמּוֹתin the schemes ofלִבָּם׃their heart.

    He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

52. 52

    הָרַסHe hath cast downנְדִיבִיםnoblesמִכִּסְאוֹתָםfrom their thrones,וַיָּרֶםand lifted upשְׁפָלִים׃the lowly.

    He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

53. 53

    רְעֵבִיםThe hungryמִלֵּא־טוֹבhe hath filled with good things,וַעֲשִׁירִיםand the richשִׁלַּחhe hath sentרֵיקָם׃empty away.

    He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

54. 54

    תָּמַךְHe hath upheldבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelעַבְדּוֹhis servant,לִזְכֹּרto rememberאֶת־רַחֲמָיו׃his mercies;

    He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

55. 55

    כַּאֲשֶׁרasדִּבֶּרhe spakeאֶל־אֲבוֹתֵינוּunto our fathers,לְאַבְרָהָםto Abrahamוּלְזַרְעוֹand to his seedעַד־עוֹלָם׃for ever.

    As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

56. 56

    וַתֵּשֶׁבAnd dweltמִרְיָםMaryעִמָּהּwith herכִּשְׁלשָׁהabout threeחֳדָשִׁיםmonths,וַתָּשׇׁבand returnedלְבֵיתָהּ׃to her house.

    And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

57. 57

    וַיִּמְלְאוּAnd were fulfilledיְמֵיthe days ofאֱלִישֶׁבַעElishebaלָלֶדֶתto give birth,וַתֵּלֶדand she boreבֵּן׃a son.

    Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

58. 58

    וַיִּשְׁמְעוּAnd heardשְׁכֵנֶיהָher neighborsוּקְרוֹבֶיהָand her kinsfolkכִּי־הִגְדִּילthat had magnifiedיְהוָֹהthe LORDאֶת־חַסְדּוֹhis lovingkindnessעִמָּהּwith her;וַיִּשְׂמְחוּand they rejoicedאִתָּה׃with her.

    And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

59. 59

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passבַּיּוֹםon the dayהַשְּׁמִינִיeighth,וַיָּבֹאוּthat they cameלָמוּלto circumciseאֶת־הַיָּלֶדthe child;וַיִּקְרְאוּand they calledאֶת־שְׁמוֹhis nameזְכַרְיָהZechariah,עַל־שֵׁםafter the name ofאָבִיו׃his father.

    And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

60. 60

    וַתַּעַןAnd answeredאִמּוֹhis motherוַתֹּאמַרand said,לֹאNay,כִּיbutיוֹחָנָןJohnיִקָּרֵאshall he be called,לוֹ׃he.

    And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

61. 61

    וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they saidאֵלֶיהָunto her,אֵין־אִישׁThere is no manבְּמִשְׁפַּחְתֵּךְin your familyאֲשֶׁרwhoseשְׁמוֹname isכַּשֵּׁםas nameהַזֶּה׃this.

    And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

62. 62

    וַיִּרְמְזוּAnd they signedאֶל־אָבִיוunto his father,לָדַעַתto knowמָהwhatהַשֵּׁםnameאֲשֶׁרthatיִקָּרֵאshould be calledלוֹ׃unto him.

    And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

63. 63

    וַיִּשְׁאַלAnd he asked forלוּחַa tablet,וַיִּכְתֹּבand wroteעָלָיוupon it,לֵאמֹרsaying,יוֹחָנָןJohnשְׁמוֹis his name.וַיִּתְמְהוּAnd marvelledכֻּלָּם׃all of them.

    And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

64. 64

    וַיִּפָּתַחAnd was openedפִּיוhis mouthוּלְשׁוֹנוֹand his tongueפִּתְאֹםsuddenly,וַיְדַבֵּרand he spoke,וַיְבָרֶךְand blessedאֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

65. 65

    וַתִּפֹּלAnd fellאֵימָהfearעַל־כׇּל־שְׁכֵנֵיהֶםupon all their neighbors;וַיְסֻפַּרand were recountedכׇּל־הַדְּבָרִיםall the thingsהָאֵלֶּהtheseבְּכׇל־הָרֵיin all the hill country ofיְהוּדָה׃Judah.

    And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judæa.

66. 66

    וַיָּשִׂימוּAnd laid themכׇל־הַשֹּׁמְעִיםall who heardאֶל־לִבָּםunto their heart,לֵאמֹרsaying,מָה־אֵפוֹאWhat thenיִהְיֶהshall beהַיֶּלֶדthe childהַזֶּהthis?וְיַד־יְהוָֹהAnd the hand of the LORDהָיְתָהwasעִמּוֹ׃with him.

    And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

67. 67

    וַיִּמָּלֵאAnd was filledזְכַרְיָהZechariahאָבִיוhis fatherרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁwith the Holy Ghost,וַיִּנָּבֵאand he prophesied,לֵאמֹר׃saying,

    And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

68. 68

    בָּרוּךְBlessed beיְהוָֹהthe LORDאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsrael,כִּיforפָקַדhe hath visitedאֶת־עַמּוֹhis people,וַיִּשְׁלַחand hath sentלוֹunto themפְּדוּת׃redemption.

    Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

69. 69

    וַיַּצְמַחAnd hath raised upלָנוּfor usקֶרֶןa horn ofיְשׁוּעָהsalvationבְּבֵיתin the house ofדָּוִדDavidעַבְדּוֹ׃his servant;

    And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

70. 70

    כַּאֲשֶׁרasדִּבֶּרhe spakeבְּפִי־נְבִיאָיוby the mouth of his prophetsהַקְּדוֹשִׁיםthe holy onesאֲשֶׁרwho have beenמֵעוֹלָם׃from of old:

    As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

71. 71

    יְשׁוּעָהSalvationמֵאֹיְבֵינוּfrom our enemies,וּמִיַּדand from the hand ofכׇּל־שׂנְאֵינוּ׃all who hate us;

    That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

72. 72

    לַעֲשׂוֹתto performחֶסֶדmercyעִם־אֲבוֹתֵינוּwith our fathers,וְלִזְכֹּרand to rememberאֶת־בְּרִיתthe covenant ofקׇדְשׁוֹ׃his holiness;

    To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

73. 73

    אֶת־הַשְּׁבוּעָהthe oathאֲשֶׁרwhichנִשְׁבַּעhe swareלְאַבְרָהָםunto Abrahamאָבִינוּ׃our father,

    The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

74. 74

    לְהַצִּילֵנוּto deliver usמִיַּדfrom the hand ofאֹיְבֵינוּour enemies,וּלְתִתֵּנוּand to grant unto usלְעׇבְדוֹto serve himבְּלִי־פָחַד׃without fear,

    That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

75. 75

    בְּתָמִיםin integrityוּבִצְדָקָהand in righteousnessלְפָנָיוbefore himכׇּל־יְמֵיall the days ofחַיֵּינוּ׃our life.

    In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

76. 76

    וְאַתָּהAnd you,הַיֶּלֶדchild,נְבִיאa prophet ofעֶלְיוֹןthe Most Highיִקָּרֵאshalt be calledלָךְunto you,כִּיforלִפְנֵיbeforeיְהוָֹהthe LORDתֵּלֵךְshall you goלְפַנּוֹתto prepareאֶת־דְּרָכָיו׃his ways;

    And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

77. 77

    וּלְהוֹרוֹתand to teachדֶּרֶךְthe way ofהַיְשׁוּעָהthe salvationלְעַמּוֹto his peopleבִּסְלִיחַתby the forgiveness ofחַטֹּאתֵיהֶם׃their sins,

    To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

78. 78

    בְּחֶסֶדthrough the lovingkindness ofאֱלֹהֵינוּour God,וּבְרַחֲמָיוand through his mercies,אֲשֶׁרby whichבָּהֶםwith themיִפְקְדֵנוּshall visit usהַנֹּגַהּthe dawningמִמָּרוֹם׃from on high,

    Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

79. 79

    לְהָאִירto give lightלְיֹשְׁבֵיunto them that dwell inחֹשֶׁךְdarknessוְצַלְמָוֶתand the shadow of death,וּלְהָכִיןand to guideאֶת־רַגְלֵינוּour feetאֶל־דֶּרֶךְunto the way ofהַשָּׁלוֹם׃peace.

    To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

80. 80

    וַיִּגְדַּלAnd grewהַיֶּלֶדthe child,וַיֶּחֱזַקand waxed strongבָּרוּחַin spirit,וַיְהִיand wasבַמִּדְבָּרוֹתin the wildernessesעַד־יוֹםuntil the day ofהֵרָאֹתוֹhis appearingאֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃unto Israel.

    And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
