    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,הַיּוֹםon day,וְהוּאthat, as heמְלַמֵּדtaughtאֶת־הָעָםthe peopleבַּמִּקְדָּשׁin the temple,וּמְבַשֵּׂרand preached the gospel,וַיִּגְּשׁוּcame upon himהַכֹּהֲנִיםthe chief priestsוְהַסּוֹפְרִיםand the scribesעִם־הַזְּקֵנִים׃with the elders,

    And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,

    וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd spakeאֵלָיוunto him,אֱמׇר־נָאsaying,לָנוּTell us,בְּאֵי־זוֹby whatרְשׁוּתauthorityאַתָּהyouעֹשֶׂהdoestאֶת־אֵלֶּהthese things?וּמִיor whoהוּאis heהַנֹּתֵןthat gaveלְךָyouאֶת־הָרְשׁוּתauthorityהַזֹּאת׃this?

    And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?

    וַיַּעַןAnd he answeredוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אַף־אֲנִיI alsoאֶשְׁאָלְכֶםwill ask youדָּבָרone thing;וְאִמְרוּand answerלִי׃me:

    And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:

    טְבִילַתThe baptism ofיוֹחָנָןJohn,הֲמִשָּׁמַיִםfrom heavenהָיָתָהwas it,אִם־מִבְּנֵיor ofאָדָם׃men?

    The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

  5. 5

    וַיִּוָּעֲצוּAnd they reasonedיַחְדָּוtogetherלֵאמֹרwith themselves, saying,אִם־נֹאמַרIf we shall say,מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִםFrom heaven;וְאָמַרhe will say,לָמָּהWhyזֶּהthenלֹאnotהֶאֱמַנְתֶּםbelieved youבּוֹ׃him?

    And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?

    וְאִם־נֹאמַרBut and if we say,מִבְּנֵיOfאָדָםmen;וּסְקָלֻנוּwill stone us:כׇּל־הָעָםall the peopleכִּי־בָרוּרfor it is sureלָהֶםunto themשֶׁיּוֹחָנָןthat Johnנָבִיאa prophetהָיָה׃was

    But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.

    וַיַּעֲנוּAnd they answered,לֹאnotיָדַעְנוּthat they could tellמֵאָיִן׃whence it was.

    And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.

  8. 8

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,גַּם־אֲנִיNeitherלֹאnotאֹמַרtellלָכֶםI youבְּאֵי־זוֹby whatרְשׁוּתauthorityאֲנִיIעֹשֶׂהdoאֵלֶּה׃these things.

    And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

    וַיַּעַןThen began heוַיְדַבֵּרto speakאֶל־הָעָםto the peopleאֶת־הַמָּשָׁלparable;הַזֶּהthisאִישׁA manאֶחָדcertainנָטַעplantedכֶּרֶםa vineyard,וַיִּתְּנֵהוּand let it forthבְּיַדtoכֹּרְמִיםhusbandmen,וַיֵּלֶךְand wentבְּדֶרֶךְinto a countryמֵרָחוֹקfar off,לְיָמִיםfor daysרַבִּים׃many.

    Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.

    וְלַמּוֹעֵדAnd at the seasonשָׁלַחhe sentעֶבֶדa servantאֶל־הַכֹּרְמִיםto the husbandmen,לָתֶת־לוֹthat they should give himמִפְּרִיof the fruit ofהַכָּרֶםthe vineyard:וְהַכֹּרְמִיםbut the husbandmenהִכֻּהוּbeat him,וַיְשַׁלְּחֻהוּand sent him awayרֵיקָם׃empty.

    And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.

    וַיֹּסֶףAnd againשְׁלֹחַhe sentעֶבֶדservant:אַחֵרanotherוַיַּכּוּand they beatגַם־אֹתוֹhim also,וַיִּבְזֻהוּand entreated him shamefully,וַיְשַׁלְּחֻהוּand sent him awayרֵיקָם׃empty.

    And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

    וַיֹּסֶףAnd againלִשְׁלֹחַhe sentשְׁלִישִׁיa third:וְגַם־אֹתוֹand him alsoפָצְעוּthey wounded,וַיְגָרֲשֻׁהוּand castוַיִּדְחָפֻהוּand thrust himחוּצָה׃out.

    And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen saidבַּעַל־הַכֶּרֶםthe lord of the vineyard,מָה־אֶעֱשֶׂהWhat shall I do?אֶשְׁלְחָהI will sendאֶת־בְּנִיmy sonאֶת־יְדִידִיbeloved:אוּלַיit may beיִרְאוּthey will seeאֹתוֹhim,וְיִירְאוּand reverenceמִפָּנָיו׃him.

    Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.

    וְכִרְאוֹתBut when sawאֹתוֹhim,הַכֹּרְמִיםthe husbandmenנוֹעֲצוּthey reasonedיַחְדָּוamong themselves,לֵאמֹרsaying,זֶהThisהוּאisהַיּוֹרֵשׁthe heir:לְכוּcome,וְנַהַרְגֵהוּlet us kill him,וּתְהִי־לָנוּthat may be ours.הַיְרֻשָּׁה׃the inheritance

    But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

    וַיְגָרֲשׁוּSo they castאוֹתוֹhimאֶל־מִחוּץout ofלַכֶּרֶםthe vineyard,וַיַּהַרְגֻהוּand killed him.וְעַתָּהNow thereforeמַה־יַּעֲשֶׂהwhat shall doלָהֶםunto them?בַּעַל־הַכָּרֶם׃the lord of the vineyard

    So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

  16. 16

    יָבוֹאHe shall comeוִיאַבֵּדand destroyאֶת־הַכֹּרְמִיםhusbandmen,הָהֵםtheseוְיִתֵּןand shall giveאֶת־הַכֶּרֶםthe vineyardלַאֲחֵרִיםto others.וַיְהִיAndכְּשׇׁמְעָםwhen they heard it,וַיֹּאמְרוּthey said,חָלִילָה׃God forbid.

    He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

  17. 17

    וַיַּבֵּט־בָּםAnd he beheld them,וַיֹּאמַרand said,וּמָהWhatהוּאisזֶהthisהַכָּתוּבthen that is written,אֶבֶןThe stoneמָאֲסוּwhich rejected,הַבּוֹנִיםthe buildersהָיְתָהthe same is becomeלְרֹאשׁthe head ofפִּנָּה׃the corner?

    And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

  18. 18

    כֹּלWhosoeverהַנֹּפֵלshall fallעַל־הָאֶבֶןupon stoneהַהִיאthatיִשָּׁבֵרshall be broken;וְאֵתbut onאֲשֶׁרwhomsoeverתִּפֹּלit shall fallעָלָיוupon him,תִּשְׁחָקֵהוּ׃it will grind him to powder.

    Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

    וַיְבַקְשׁוּAnd soughtרָאשֵׁיthe chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַסּוֹפְרִיםand the scribesלִשְׁלֹחַ־יָדָםto lay handsבּוֹon him;בָּעֵתtheהַהִיאsame hour,וַיִּירְאוּand they fearedמִפְּנֵיthe presence ofהָעָםthe people:כִּיforיָדְעוּthey perceivedאֲשֶׁרthatעֲלֵיהֶםagainst them.דִּבֶּרhe had spokenאֶת־הַמָּשָׁלparableהַזֶּה׃this

    And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

    וַיֶּאֶרְבוּ־לוֹAnd they watched him,וַיִּשְׁלְחוּand sent forthמְאָרֲבִיםspies,מִתְחַפְּשִׂיםwhich should feign themselvesכְּהֹלְכֵיwalkers inתֹםuprightness,לְמַעַןthatיִלְכְּדוּthey might take hold ofאוֹתוֹhimבְּדָבָרof his words,לְהַסְגִּירוֹthat so they might deliver himאֶל־הַשְּׂרָרָהunto the powerוּבְיַדand authority ofהַהֶגְמוֹן׃the governor.

    And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

    וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּAnd they asked him,לֵאמֹרsaying,רַבִּיMaster,יָדַעְנוּwe knowכִּיthatנְכוֹנָהrightly,תְּדַבֵּרyou sayוּתְלַמֵּדand teachestוְלֹא־תִשָּׂאneither acceptest youפָנִיםthe person of any,כִּיbutבֶאֱמֶתtruly:מוֹרֶהteachestאַתָּהyouאֶת־דֶּרֶךְthe way ofאֱלֹהִים׃God

    And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

  22. 22

    הֲמֻתָּרIs it lawfulלָנוּfor usלָתֶת־מַסto give tributeלְקֵיסָרunto Caesar,אִם־לֹא׃or no?

    Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cæsar, or no?

  23. 23

    וַיֵּדַעBut he perceivedאֶת־נִכְלֵיהֶםtheir craftiness,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָהֶם׃unto them,

    But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?

  24. 24

    מַה־תְּנַסּוּנִיWhy tempt you me?הַרְאוּנִיShew meדִינָרa penny.הַצּוּרָהimageוְהַמִּכְתָּבand superscriptionאֲשֶׁרwhichעָלָיוupon itשֶׁל־מִיWhoseהֵםhath it?וַיַּעֲנוּThey answeredוַיֹּאמְרוּand said,שֶׁל־קֵיסָר׃Caesar's.

    Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Cæsar's.

  25. 25

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,לָכֵןthenתְּנוּRender thereforeלְקֵיסַרunto Caesarאֶת־אֲשֶׁרthe things whichלְקֵיסָרbe Caesar's,וְלֵאלֹהִיםand unto Godאֶת־אֲשֶׁרthe things whichלֵאֱלֹהִים׃be God's.

    And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Cæsar the things which be Cæsar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

  26. 26

    וְלֹאAndיָכְלוּthey could notלְלָכְדוֹtake hold ofבְדָבָרhis wordsלִפְנֵיbeforeהָעָםthe people:וַיִּתְמְהוּand they marvelledעַל־מַעֲנֵהוּat his answer,וַיַּחֲרִישׁוּ׃and held their peace.

    And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

  27. 27

    וַיִּקְרְבוּThen cameאֲנָשִׁיםcertainמִן־הַצַּדּוּקִיםof the Sadducees,הָאֹמְרִיםwhich denyאֵיןthat there is noתְּחִיַּתresurrectionהַמֵּתִיםof the dead;וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּand they asked him,לֵאמֹר׃saying,

    Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,

    מוֹרֶהMaster,משֶׁהMosesכָּתַבwroteלָנוּunto us,כִּיIfיָמוּתdie,אָחbrotherבַּעַלhavingאִשָּׁהa wife,וּבָנִיםandאֵין־לוֹhe die without children,וְלָקַחthat should takeאָחִיוhis brotherאֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹhis wife,וְהֵקִיםand raise upזֶרַעseedלְאָחִיו׃unto his brother.

    Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

  29. 29

    וְהִנֵּהThereforeהָיוּthere wereשִׁבְעָהsevenאַחִיםbrethren:וְהָרִאשׁוֹןand the firstלָקַחtookאִשָּׁהa wife,וַיָּמׇתand diedוּבָנִיםand childrenאֵיןhad heלוֹ׃none.

    There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.

  30. 30

    וַיִּקַּחAnd tookאֹתָהּher to wife,הַשֵּׁנִיthe secondוַיָּמׇתand he diedגַּם־הוּאalsoלֹא־בָנִים׃childless.

    And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.

  31. 31

    וַיִּקַּחAnd tookאֹתָהּher;הַשְּׁלִישִׁיthe thirdוְכַדָּבָרand in like mannerהַזֶּהthisעָשׂוּdidאַף־הַשִּׁבְעָהthe seven also:וְלֹא־הִנִּיחוּand they leftבָנִיםno children,וַיָּמוּתוּ׃and died.

    And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.

  32. 32

    וּבָאַחֲרוֹנָהLast of allמֵתָהdiedגַם־הָאִשָּׁה׃the woman also.

    Last of all the woman died also.

  33. 33

    וְהִנֵּהThereforeבִּתְחִיַּתin the resurrectionהַמֵּתִיםof the deadלְמִיof whichמֵהֶםof themתִּהְיֶהis sheלְאִשָּׁהwife?כִּי־הָיְתָהfor wereלַשִּׁבְעָהsevenלְאִשָּׁה׃had her to wife.

    Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.

  34. 34

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeringיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,בְּנֵיThe children ofהָעוֹלָםworldהַזֶּהthisיִשְׂאוּmarryנָשִׁיםwives,וְתִנָּשֶׂאנָה׃and are given in marriage:

    And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

  35. 35

    וְהַזֹּכִיםBut they which shall be accounted worthyלָעוֹלָםof worldהַבָּאthat,וְלִתְחִיַּתand the resurrectionהַמֵּתִיםfrom the dead,לֹא־יִשְׂאוּneither marryנָשִׁיםwives,וְלֹאnorתִנָּשֶׂאנָה׃are given in marriage:

    But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

  36. 36

    כִּיForלֹא־יוּכְלוּneither canלָמוּתthey dieעוֹדany more:כִּיforשָׁוִיםequalהֵםthey areלַמַּלְאָכִיםunto the angels;וּבְנֵיand are the children ofאֱלֹהִיםGod,הֵמָּהthey are,בִּהְיוֹתָםbeingבְּנֵיthe children ofהַתְּקוּמָה׃the resurrection.

    Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

  37. 37

    וְגַם־משֶׁהNow that Mosesרָמַזshewedבַּסְּנֶהat the bush,שֶׁיָּקוּמוּthat are raisedהַמֵּתִיםthe dead,בְּקׇרְאוֹwhen he callethאֶת־יְהוָֹהthe LORDאֱלֹהֵיthe God ofאַבְרָהָםAbraham,אֱלֹהֵיand the God ofיִצְחָקIsaac,וֵאלֹהֵיand the God ofיַעֲקֹב׃Jacob.

    Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

  38. 38

    וְהָאֱלֹהִיםFor Godלֹאnotאֱלֹהֵיis the God ofהַמֵּתִיםthe dead,הוּאis he,כִּיbutאִםratherאֱלֹהֵיofהַחַיִּיםthe living:כִּיforכֻלָּםallחַיִּיםliveלוֹ׃unto him.

    For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

  39. 39

    וַיַּעֲנוּThen answeredאֲנָשִׁיםcertain ofמִן־הַסּוֹפְרִיםthe scribesרַבִּיMaster,יָפֶהwellדִבַּרְתָּ׃you have said.

    Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.

  40. 40

    וְלֹא־מָצְאוּAndעוֹדnot after thatאֶת־לִבָּםdurst theyלִשְׁאֹלaskאוֹתוֹhimדָּבָר׃any question at all.

    And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.

  41. 41

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אֵיךְHowיֹאמְרוּsay theyלַמָּשִׁיחַthat Christשֶׁהוּאisבֶּן־דָּוִד׃son?

    And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?

  42. 42

    וְדָוִדAnd Davidבְּעַצְמוֹhimselfאָמַרsaithבְּסֵפֶרin the book ofתְּהִלִּיםPsalms,נְאֻם־יְהוָֹהThe LORD saidלַאדֹנִיunto my Lord,שֵׁבSit youלִימִינִי׃on my right hand,

    And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

  43. 43

    עַד־אָשִׁיתTill I makeאֹיְבֶיךָyour enemiesהֲדֹםa footstoolלְרַגְלֶיךָ׃for your feet.

    Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

  44. 44

    הִנֵּהBehold,דָּוִדDavidקֹרֵאtherefore callethלוֹhimאָדוֹןLord,וְאֵיךְhowהוּאis heבְּנוֹ׃then his son?

    David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?

  45. 45

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen he saidאֶל־תַּלְמִידָיוunto his disciplesבְּאׇזְנֵיin the audience ofכׇּל־הָעָם׃all the people,

    Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,

  46. 46

    הִזָּהֲרוּBewareמִן־הַסּוֹפְרִיםof the scribes,הַחֲפֵצִיםwhich desireלְהִתְהַלֵּךְto walkעֲטוּפֵיin longטַלִּיתrobes,וְאֹהֲבִיםand loveשֶׁיִּשְׁאֲלוּthat men salute themבִשְׁלוֹמָםin greetingבַּשְּׁוָקִיםin the markets,וְלַשֶׁבֶתand to sitרִאשֹׁנִיםin the highest seatsבְּבָתֵּיin the houses ofכְנֵסִיּוֹתsynagogues,וּלְהָסֵבand to sitרִאשֹׁנִיםin the chief roomsבַּסְּעוּדוֹת׃at feasts;

    Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

  47. 47

    הַבֹּלְעִיםWhich devourאֶת־בָּתֵּיhouses,הָאַלְמָנוֹתwidows'וּמַאֲרִיכִיםand make longבִּתְפִלָּתָםprayersלְמַרְאֵהfor a shew ofעֵינָיִםthe eyes:הֵמָּהthe sameמִשְׁפָּטjudgmentגָּדוֹלgreatיֶתֶרbeyondמְאֹדmeasure,יִשָּׁפֵטוּ׃shall receive.

    Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
