    וַיְהִיThenבִּקְרֹבdrew nearאֵלָיוunto himכׇּל־הַמּוֹכְסִיםall the publicansוְהַחַטָּאִיםand sinnersלִשְׁמֹעַfor to hearאוֹתוֹ׃him.

    Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.

    וַיִּלּוֹנוּAnd murmured,הַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Phariseesוְהַסּוֹפְרִיםand scribesלֵאמֹרsaying,הָאִישׁmanהַזֶּהThisמְקַבֵּלreceivethאֶת־הַחַטָּאִיםsinners,וְאֹכֵלand eatethאִתָּם׃with them.

    And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

    וַיִּשָּׂאAnd he spakeאֶת־הַמָּשָׁלparableהַזֶּהthisוַיֹּאמַרand saidאֲלֵיהֶם׃unto them, saying,

    And he spake this parable unto them, saying,

    מִיWhatבָכֶםof youהָאִישׁmanאֲשֶׁר־לוֹhavingמֵאָהan hundredכְבָשִׂיםsheep,וְאָבַדif he loseלוֹhimאֶחָדoneמֵהֶםof them,וְלֹאdoth notיִטּוֹשׁleaveאֶת־הַתִּשְׁעִיםthe ninetyוְתִשְׁעָהand nineבַּמִּדְבָּרin the wilderness,וְהָלַךְand goאַחֲרֵיafterהָאֹבֵדthat which is lost,עַדuntilכִּי־יִמְצָאֵהוּ׃he find it?

    What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

    וְהָיָהAnd whenכְּמָצְאוֹhe hath foundאֹתוֹit,יְשִׂימֶנּוּhe layeth itעַל־כְּתֵפָיוon his shoulders,בְּשִׂמְחָה׃rejoicing.

    And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

    וּבָאAnd when he comethאֶל־בֵּיתוֹhome,וְקָרָאhe calleth togetherלְאֹהֲבָיוhis friendsוְלִשְׁכֵנָיוand neighborsיַחַדtogether,לֵאמֹרsayingשִׂמְחוּRejoiceאִתִּיwith me;כִּיforמָצָאתִיI have foundאֶת־שֵׂיִיmy sheepהָאֹבֵד׃which was lost.

    And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.

    אֹמֵרtellאֲנִיIלָכֶםunto you,כֵּןthat likewiseשִׂמְחָהjoyתִהְיֶהshall beבַּשָּׁמַיִםin heavenעַל־חוֹטֵאover sinnerאֶחָדoneאֲשֶׁרthatשָׁבrepenteth,יוֹתֵרmore than overמֵעַל־תִּשְׁעִיםninetyוְתִשְׁעָהand nineצַדִּיקִיםjust persons,אֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־יִצְטָרְכוּneed noלִתְשׁוּבָה׃repentance.

    I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

    אוֹEitherמִיwhatהָאִשָּׁהwomanאֲשֶׁר־לָהּhavingעֲשָׂרָהtenדַרְכְּמוֹנִיםpieces of silver,וְאָבַדif she loseלָהּof themדַּרְכְּמוֹןpiece,אֶחָדoneוְלֹא־תַדְלִיקdoth not lightנֵרa candle,וּתְטַאטֵאand sweepאֶת־הַבַּיִתthe house,וּתְחַפֵּשׂand seekהֵיטֵבdiligentlyעַדtillכִּי־תִמְצָאֵהוּ׃she find it?

    Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?

    וְהָיָהAnd whenכְּמָצְאָהּshe hath foundאוֹתוֹit,תִּקְרָאshe callethלְרֵעוֹתֶיהָher friendsוְלִשְׁכֵנוֹתֶיהָand her neighbors together,לֵאמֹרsaying,שְׂמַחְנָהRejoiceאִתִּיwith me;כִּיforמָצָאתִיI have foundאֵת־הַדַּרְכְּמוֹןthe pieceאֲשֶׁרwhichאָבַדI had lost,לִי׃which was mine.

    And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.

    כֵּןLikewise,אֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,תִּהְיֶהthere isשִׂמְחָהjoyלִפְנֵיin the presence ofמַלְאֲכֵיthe angels ofאֱלֹהִיםGodעַל־חוֹטֵאover sinnerאֶחָדoneאֲשֶׁר־שָׁבthat repentethמֵחַטָּאתוֹ׃of his sin.

    Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

    וַיֹּאמַרAnd he said,אִישׁA manאֶחָדcertainהָיוּhadלוֹunto himשְׁנֵיtwoבָנִים׃sons:

    And he said, A certain man had two sons:

  12. 12

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidהַצָּעִירthe youngerאֶל־אָבִיוto his father,אָבִיFather,תְּנָה־לִּיgive meאֶת־חֵלֶקthe portion ofהַנְּכָסִיםgoodsאֲשֶׁרthatיִפֹּלfallethלִיto me.וַיְחַלֵּקAnd he dividedלָהֶםunto themאֶת־הַנַּחֲלָה׃his living.

    And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

  13. 13

    וַיְהִיAndמִקֵּץnot manyיָמִיםdays afterוַיֶּאֱסֹףgatheredהַבֵּןsonהַצָּעִירthe youngerאֶת־הַכֹּלall together,וַיֵּלֶךְand took his journeyאֶל־אֶרֶץinto a countryרְחוֹקָהfar,וַיְהִיand thereזוֹלֵלwastedוְסֹבֵאin riotous living,וַיְפַזֵּרand scatteredשָׁםthereאֶת־רְכֻשׁוֹ׃his substance

    And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

  14. 14

    וְאַחֲרֵיAnd whenכַלּוֹתוֹhe had spentאֶת־הַכֹּלall,הָיָהthere aroseרָעָבa famineחָזָקmightyבָּאָרֶץin land,הַהִיאthatוַיָּחֶלand he beganלִהְיוֹתto beחֲסַר־לָחֶם׃in want.

    And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

  15. 15

    וַיֵּלֶךְAnd he wentוַיִּדְבַּקand joined himselfבְּאֶחָדto oneמִבְּנֵיof the citizens ofהַמְּדִינָהcountryבָּאָרֶץin the landהַהִיאthat,וַיִּשְׁלַחand he sentאוֹתוֹhimאֶל־שְׂדוֹתָיוinto his fieldsלִרְעוֹתto feedחֲזִירִים׃swine.

    And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

  16. 16

    וַיִּתְאָוAnd he would fainלְמַלֵּאhave filledבִטְנוֹhis bellyמֵהַחֲרוּבִיםwith the husksאֲשֶׁרthatיֹאכְלוּdid eat:הַחֲזִירִיםthe swineוְאֵיןand noנֹתֵןman gaveלוֹ׃unto him.

    And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

  17. 17

    וַיָּשֶׁבAnd when he cameאֶל־לִבּוֹto himself,וַיֹּאמַרhe said,מָה־רַבּוּHow manyשְׂכִירֵיhired servants ofאָבִיmy father'sאֲשֶׁרhaveיֵשׁthere isלָהֶםunto themלֶאֱכֹלbreadדַּיָּםenoughוְהוֹתֵרand to spare,וַאֲנִיand Iאֹבֵדperishבָּרָעָב׃with hunger!

    And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

  18. 18

    אָקוּמָה־נָּאI will ariseוְאֵלְכָהand goאֶל־אָבִיto my father,וְאֹמַרand will sayאֵלָיוunto him,אָבִיFather,חָטָאתִיI have sinnedגַּםagainstלְשָׁמַיִםheaven,גַּםandלְפָנֶיךָ׃before you,

    I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

    וּנְקַלֹּתִיAnd am no moreמֵהִקָּרֵאworthy to be calledעוֹדany moreבְּנֶךָyour son:שִׂימֵנִיmake meכְּאַחַדas oneשְׂכִירֶיךָ׃of your hired servants.

    And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

  20. 20

    וַיָּקׇםAnd he arose,וַיָּבֹאand cameאֶל־אָבִיוto his father.עוֹדֶנּוּBut when he was yetמֵרָחוֹקa great way off,וְאָבִיוhis fatherרָאָהוּsaw him,וַיֶּהֱמוּand had compassion,מֵעָיוin his bowels,וַיָּרׇץand ran,וַיִּפֹּלand fellעַל־צַוָּארָיוon his neck,וַיִּשָּׁקֵהוּ׃and kissed him.

    And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

  21. 21

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֵלָיוunto him,הַבֵּןthe sonאָבִיFather,חָטָאתִיI have sinnedגַּםagainstלְשָׁמַיִםheaven,גַּםandלְפָנֶיךָin your sight,וַאֲנִיand Iנְקַלֹּתִיam no moreמֵהִקָּרֵאworthy to be calledעוֹדany moreבְּנֶךָ׃your son.

    And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

  22. 22

    וַיֹּאמֶרBut saidהָאָבthe fatherאֶל־עֲבָדָיוto his servants,הָבִיאוּBring forthאֶת־הַשִׂמְלָהthe robe,הַיָּפָהbestוְהַלְבִּישֻׁהוּand put it on him;וּתְנוּand putטַבַּעַתa ringעַל־יָדוֹon his hand,וּנְעָלִיםand shoesבְּרַגְלָיו׃on his feet:

    But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

  23. 23

    וְהָבִיאוּAnd bring hitherעֵגֶלthe calf,הַמַּרְבֵּקfattedוְטִבְחוּand killאֹתוֹit;וְנֹאכְלָהand let us eat,וְנִשְׂמָח׃and be merry:

    And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

  24. 24

    כִּיForזֶה־בְּנִיmy sonהָיָהthis wasמֵתdead,וַיֶּחִיand is alive again;וְאֹבֵדhe was lost,וַיִּמָּצֵאand is found.וַיָּחֵלּוּAnd they beganלִשְׂמֹחַ׃to be merry.

    For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

  25. 25

    וּבְנוֹNow sonהַגָּדוֹלhis elderבַּשָׂדֶהwas in the field:וַיְהִיandבְשׁוּבוֹas he cameכַּאֲשֶׁרandקָרַבdrew nighאֶל־הַבַּיִתto the house,וַיִּשְׁמַעhe heardקוֹלthe sound ofזִמְרָהmusickוּמְחֹלוֹת׃and dancing.

    Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.

  26. 26

    וַיִּקְרָאAnd he calledאֶל־אַחַדone ofהַנְּעָרִיםthe servants,וַיִּשְׁאַלand askedלָדַעַתto knowמַה־הַדָּבָר׃what these things meant.

    And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.

  27. 27

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֵלָיוunto him,כִּי־בָאis come;אָחִיךָYour brotherוַיִּטְבַּחand hath killedאָבִיךָyour fatherעֵגֶלthe calf,הַמַּרְבֵּקfattedעַל־אֲשֶׁרbecauseשָׁבhe hath receivedאֵלָיוhimבְּשָׁלוֹם׃safe and sound.

    And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

  28. 28

    וַיִּחַרAnd he was angry,לוֹwithin him,וַיְמָאֵןand would notלָבוֹאgoהַבָּיְתָהin:וַיֵּצֵאtherefore cameאָבִיוhis father out,וַיְדַבֵּרand intreatedעַל־לִבּוֹ׃him.

    And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and entreated him.

  29. 29

    וַיַּעַןAnd he answeringוַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֶל־אָבִיוto his father,הִנֵּהLo,זֶהtheseשָׁנִיםyearsרַבּוֹתmanyאָנֹכִיIעֹבֵדdo serveאֹתְךָyou,וּמִיָּמַיand timeלֹאneverעָבַרְתִּיI transgressedאֶת־מִצְוָתֶךָyour commandment:וְאַתָּהand yet youמִיָּמַיat any timeלֹא־נָתַתָּnever gavestלִּיmeגְּדִיa kid,לְמַעַןthatאָשִׂישׂI might make merryעִם־רֵעָי׃with my friends:

    And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

  30. 30

    וְעַתָּהBut as soon asבָּאwas come,בִנְךָ־זֶהthis your sonאֲשֶׁרwhichבִּלַּעhath devouredאֶת־נַחֲלָתְךָyour livingעִם־הַזֹּנוֹתwith harlots,וַתִּזְבַּח־לוֹyou have killed for himאֶת־עֵגֶלthe calf.הַמַּרְבֵּק׃fatted

    But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.

  31. 31

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֵלָיוunto him,בְּנִיSon,אַתָּהyouתָּמִידeverעִמָּדִיart with me,וְכֹלand allאֲשֶׁר־לִיthat I haveלְךָyoursהוּא׃it is.

    And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.

  32. 32

    אֲבָלButאָחִיךָyour brotherהִנֵּהbehold,רָאוּיit was meetלָשׂוּשׂthat we should make merry,וְלִשְׂמֹחַand be glad:עָלָיוfor him,כִּיforהָיָהwasמֵתdead,וַיֶּחִיand is alive again;וְאֹבֵדand was lost,וַיִּמָּצֵא׃and is found.

    It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.
