    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,בְּבֹאוֹas he wentבַשַּׁבָּתon the sabbath dayאֶל־בֵּיתinto the house ofאֶחָדoneמֵרָאשֵׁיof the chiefהַפְּרוּשִׁיםPhariseesלֶאֱכֹלto eatלָחֶםbread,וְהֵמָּהthat theyאֹרְבִיםwatchedלוֹ׃him.

    And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

    וְהִנֵּהAnd, behold,אִישׁthere was a manאֶחָדcertainלְפָנָיוbefore himאֲשֶׁרwhichגּוּפוֹhis bodyצָבָהhad the dropsyמִמָּיִם׃of water,

    And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand spakeאֶל־הַחֲכָמִיםunto the lawyersוְאֶל־הַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees,לֵאמֹרsaying,הֲמֻתָּרIs it lawfulלִרְפֹּאto healבַשַּׁבָּתon the sabbath day,אִם־לֹאor not?וַיַּחֲרִישׁוּ׃And they held their peace.

    And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

    וַיֹּאחֶז־בּוֹAnd he took him,וַיִּרְפָּאֵהוּand healed him,וַיְשַׁלְּחֵהוּ׃and let him go;

    And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

  5. 5

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeredוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,מִיWhichבָכֶםof youהָאִישׁthe manאֲשֶׁרwhoseחֲמֹרוֹassאוֹorשׁוֹרוֹoxיִפּוֹלshall fallאֶל־הַבְּאֵרinto a pit,וְלֹא־יְמַהֵרand will not straightwayלְהַעֲלוֹתוֹpull him outבְּיוֹםon day?הַשַּׁבָּת׃the sabbath

    And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

    וְלֹאAnd notיָדְעוּthey couldלְהָשִׁיבanswer himדָּבָר׃again.

    And they could not answer him again to these things.

  7. 7

    וַיִּשָּׂאAnd he put forthמְשָׁלוֹa parableאֶל־הַקְּרוּאִיםto those which were bidden,בִּרְאוֹתוֹwhen he markedאֶת־אֲשֶׁרhowבָּחֲרוּthey chose outלָהֶםfor themselvesלָשֶׁבֶתto sitבְּרֹאשׁin the chief rooms;וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶם׃unto them,

    And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,

    כִּי־יִקְרָאWhen art biddenאֹתְךָyouאִישׁof any manאֶל־הַחֲתֻנָּהto a wedding,אַל־תָּסֵבsit not downבְּרֹאשׁin the highest room;פֶּן־יִקָּרֵאlest be biddenשָׁמָּהof him,אִישׁa manנִכְבָּדmore honorableמִמֶּךָ׃than you

    When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

    וּבָאAnd he that cameהַקֹּרֵאthat badeלְךָyouוְלוֹand himוְאָמַרcome and sayאֵלֶיךָto you,פַּנֵּהGiveמָקוֹםplaceלָזֶהthis man;וְאָזand thenתָּקוּםyou beginבִּכְלִמָּהwith shameלָשֶׁבֶתto takeבַּמָּקוֹםthe roomהָאַחֲרוֹן׃lowest.

    And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

    וְכִיBut whenתִקָּרֵאyou are bidden,לֵךְgoוְהָסֵבand sit downבַּמָּקוֹםin the room,הָאַחֲרוֹןlowestלְמַעַןthatיָבֹאwhen comethהַקֹּרֵאhe that badeלְךָyou,וְאָמַרhe may sayאֵלֶיךָunto you,אֲהוּבִיFriend,עֲלֵהgo upלְמַעְלָהhigherמִזֶּהthan this:וְהָיָה־לְךָthen shall you haveכָבוֹדworshipלִפְנֵיin the presence ofהַמְסֻבִּיםthem that sit at meatעִמָּךְ׃with you.

    But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

    כִּיForכׇּל־הַמְרוֹמֵםwhosoever exaltethעַצְמוֹhimselfיִשָּׁפֵלshall be abased;וְהַמַּשְׁפִּילand he that humblethאֶת־עַצְמוֹhimselfיְרוֹמָם׃shall be exalted.

    For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

    וְגַםThen said he alsoאֶל־הָאִישׁto himאֲשֶׁרthatקָרָאbadeלוֹhim,אָמַרhe saidכִּיWhenתַעֲשֶׂהyou makeסְעוּדַתa dinnerצׇהֳרַיִםor noon,אוֹorסְעוּדַתa supperעָרֶבevening,אַל־תִּקְרָאcall notלְאֹהֲבֶיךָyour friends,וּלְאַחֶיךָnor your brethren,וְלִקְרוֹבֶיךָneither your kinsmen,וְלִשְׁכֵנֶיךָnor your neighborsהָעֲשִׁירִיםrich;פֶּן־יִקְרְאוּךָlest they bid youגַּם־הֵמָּהalso again,וְהָיָהandלְךָyou beלְשִׁלּוּם׃a recompence made.

    Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

    אֲבָלButכִּי־תַעֲשֶׂהwhen you makeמִשְׁתֶּהa feast,קְרָאcallהָעֲנִיִּיםthe poor,וְהַנִּדְכָּאִיםand the maimed,וְהַפִּסְחִיםthe lame,וְהַעִוְרִים׃the blind:

    But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

    וְאַשְׁרֶיךָAnd you shall be blessed;בַּאֲשֶׁרforאֵין־לָהֶםthey cannotלְשַׁלֶּם־לָךְrecompense you:כִּיforיְשֻׁלַּםit shall be recompensedלְךָyouבִּתְחִיַּתat the resurrection ofהַצַּדִּיקִים׃the just.

    And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

    וַיִּשְׁמַעAnd when heardאֶחָדone ofמִן־הַמְסֻבִּיםthem that sat at meat with himאֶת־הַדָּבָרthings,הַזֶּהtheseוַיֹּאמֶרhe saidאֵלָיוunto him,אַשְׁרֵיBlessed isהָאֹכֵלhe that shall eatלֶחֶםbreadבְּמַלְכוּתin the kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

    וְהוּאThen heאָמַרsaidאֵלָיוunto him,אִישׁA manאֶחָדcertainעָשָׂהmadeסְעוּדָהa supperגְדוֹלָהgreat,וַיִּקְרָאand badeלָרַבִּים׃many:

    Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

  17. 17

    וַיִּשְׁלַחAnd sentאֶת־עַבְדּוֹhis servantלְעֵתat time,הַסְּעוּדָהsupperאֶל־הַקְּרוּאִיםunto them that were bidden,לֵאמֹרsaying,בֹּאוּCome;כִּי־הַכֹּלfor all thingsמוּכָן׃are now ready.

    And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

  18. 18

    וַיָּחֵלּוּAnd beganכֻלָּםthey allיַחְדָּוwith one consentלְהִתְנַצֵּלto make excuse.וַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֵלָיוunto him,הָרִאשׁוֹןThe firstשָׂדֶהa piece of ground,קָנִיתִיI have boughtוַהֲלֹאand I mustאֵצֵאneeds goלִרְאֹתוֹand see it:אֲבַקֵּשׁI prayמִמְּךָyouנַקֵּנִי׃have me excused.

    And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

    וְאַחֵרAnd anotherאָמָרsaid,חֲמֵשֶׁתfiveצִמְדֵי־בָקָרyoke of oxen,קָנִיתִיI have boughtוַאֲנִיand Iהֹלֵךְgoלִבְחֹןto proveאוֹתָםthem:אֲבַקֵּשׁI prayמִמְּךָyouנַקֵּנִי׃have me excused.

    And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

  20. 20

    וְאַחֵרAnd anotherאָמָרsaid,אִשָּׁהa wife,לָקַחְתִּיI have marriedוּבִגְלַלand thereforeהַדָּבָרfor the thingהַזֶּהthisלֹאnotאוּכַלI cannotלָבוֹא׃come.

    And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

  21. 21

    וַיָּבֹאSo cameהָעֶבֶדthat servant,וַיַּגֵּדand shewedאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםthings.הָאֵלֶּהtheseלַאדֹנָיוhis lordוַיִּקְצֹףThen being angryבַּעַלthe master ofהַבַּיִתthe houseוַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֶל־עַבְדּוֹto his servant,מַהֵרQuicklyצֵאGo outאֶל־רְחֹבוֹתinto the streetsהָעִירof the city,וְאֶל־חוּצוֹתֶיהָand lanes,וְהָבֵאand bring inהֵנָּהhitherאֶת־הָעֲנִיִּיםthe poor,וְאֶת־הַנִּדְכָּאִיםand the maimed,וְאֶת־הַעִוְרִיםand the blind,וְאֶת־הַפִּסְחִים׃and the lame.

    So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

  22. 22

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd said,הָעֶבֶדthe servantאֲדֹנִיLord,כַּאֲשֶׁרasצִוִּיתָyou have commanded,כֵּןthusנַעֲשָׂהit is done,וְיֶשׁ־עוֹדand yet there isמָקוֹם׃room.

    And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

  23. 23

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidהָאָדוֹןthe lordאֶל־הָעָבֶדunto the servant,צֵאGo outאֶל־הַדְּרָכִיםinto the highwaysוְאֶל־הַגְּדֵרוֹתand hedges,וּפְצֹרand compelבָּהֶםthemלָבוֹאto come in,לְמַעַןthatיִמָּלֵאmay be filled.בֵיתִי׃my house

    And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

  24. 24

    כִּיForאֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,אֵיןThat noneאֶחָדoneמִן־הָאֲנָשִׁיםof those menהַקְּרוּאִיםwhich were biddenהָהֵםthoseאֲשֶׁרthatיִטְעַםshall taste ofסְעוּדָתִי׃my supper.

    For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

  25. 25

    וַהֲמוֹןAnd multitudes ofעַם־רָבgreatהֹלְכִיםthere wentאִתּוֹwith him:וַיִּפֶןand he turned,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶם׃unto them,

    And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

    אִישׁIf any manכִּי־יָבוֹאcomeאֵלַיto me,וְלֹאand notיִשְׂנָאhateאֶת־אָבִיוhis father,וְאֶת־אִמּוֹand mother,וְאֶת־אִשְׁתּוֹand wife,וְאֶת־בָּנָיוand children,וְאֶת־אֶחָיוand brethren,וְאֶת־אַחְיֹתָיוand sisters,וְאַףyea,גַּם־אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹand his own life also,לֹאnotיוּכַלhe cannotלִהְיוֹתbeתַּלְמִידִי׃my disciple.

    If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

  27. 27

    וַאֲשֶׁרAnd whosoeverלֹאdoth notיִשָׂאbearאֶת־צְלוּבוֹhis cross,וּבָאand comeאַחֲרָיafter me,לֹאnotיוּכַלhe cannotלִהְיוֹתbeתַּלְמִידִי׃my disciple.

    And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

  28. 28

    כִּיForמִיwhichמִכֶּםof you,הֶחָפֵץintendingלִבְנוֹתto buildמִגְדָּלa tower,לֹאnotיֵשֵׁבsitteth downרִאשׁוֹנָהfirst,וִיחַשֵּׁבand countethאֶת־הַהוֹצָאוֹתthe cost,אִם־הַשֵׂגwhetherתַּשִׂיגhe haveיָדוֹwherewithלְהַשְׁלִימוֹ׃to finish it?

    For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

    פֶּן־יְיַסֵּדLest haply, after he hath laid the foundation,וְלֹא־יוּכַלand is not ableלְכַלּתוֹto finish it,וְהָיָהand soכׇּל־רֹאָיוall that beholdיָקוּמוּit beginוְלָעֲגוּ־לוֹto mock him,לֵאמֹר׃saying,

    Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

  30. 30

    הָאִישׁmanהַזֶּהThisהֵחֵלbeganלִבְנוֹתto build,וְלֹאand notיָכֹלwas ableלְכַלּוֹת׃to finish.

    Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

  31. 31

    אוֹOrמִי־הוּאwhatהַמֶּלֶךְking,הַקָּםgoingלְהִתְגָּרוֹתto makeמִלְחָמָהwarבְּמֶלֶךְagainst king,אַחֵרanotherוְלֹאnotיֵשֵׁבsitteth downבָּרִאשׁוֹנָהfirst,וְיִתְיָעֵץand consultethאִם־יוּכַלwhether he be ableלַעֲרֹךְto meetבַּעֲשֶׂרֶתwith tenאֲלָפִיםthousandלִקְרַאתhim that meetethהַבָּאcomethעָלָיוagainst himבְּעֶשְׂרִיםwith twentyאָלֶף׃thousand?

    Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

  32. 32

    וְאִם־לֹאOr else,יוּכַלhe be able,וְשָׁלַחhe sendethאֵלָיוunto himמַלְאָכִיםan ambassage,בְּעוֹדֶנּוּwhile he is yetמֵרָחוֹקa great way off,לְבַקֵּשׁand desirethשָׁלוֹם׃conditions of peace.

    Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

  33. 33

    וְכֵןSo likewise,כׇּל־אִישׁwhosoeverמִכֶּםof youאֲשֶׁרthatלֹא־יַעֲזֹבforsaketh notכׇּל־קִנְיָנָיוall that he hath,לֹאnotיוּכַלhe cannotלִהְיוֹתbeתַּלְמִידִי׃my disciple.

    So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

  34. 34

    טוֹבis good:הַמֶּלַחSaltוְאִםbut ifהַמֶּלַחthe saltהָיָהhaveתָפֵלlost his savor,בַּמֶּהwherewithיְתֻקָּן׃shall it be seasoned?

    Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

    גַּםneitherלָאֲדָמָהfor the land,גַּםnor yetלַדֹּמֶןfor the dunghill;לֹאnotיִצְלַחIt is fitהַחוּצָהout.יַשְׁלִיכֻהוּbut men cast itמִיHe thatאֲשֶׁרthatאׇזְנַיִםearsלוֹhathלִשְׁמֹעַto hear,יִשְׁמָע׃let him hear.

    It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
