    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,הוּאheמִתְפַּלֵּלwas prayingבְּמָקוֹםin placeאֶחָדa certain,וּכְכַלּתוֹthat when he ceased,וַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֵלָיוunto himאֶחָדoneמִתַּלְמִידָיוof his disciples,אֲדֹנִיLord,לַמְּדֵנוּteach usלְהִתְפַּלֵּלto pray,כַּאֲשֶׁרasלִמֵּדtaughtגַּם־יוֹחָנָןalso Johnאֶת־תַּלְמִידָיו׃his disciples.

    And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,כִּיWhenתִתְפַּלֲלוּyou pray,אִמְרוּsay,אָבִינוּOur Fatherשֶׁבַּשָּׁמַיִםwhich art in heaven,יִתְקַדַּשׁHallowed beשְׁמֶךָyour name.תָּבוֹאcomeמַלְכוּתֶךָYour kingdom.יֵעָשֶׂהbe doneרְצוֹנְךָYour will,כְּמוֹasבַשָּׁמַיִםin heaven,כֵּןsoבָּאָרֶץ׃in earth.

    And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

    אֶת־לֶחֶםbreadחֻקֵּנוּour dailyתֶּן־לָנוּGive usיוֹםdayיוֹם׃by day.

    Give us day by day our daily bread.

    וּמְחַל־נָאAnd forgive, I pray,עַל־חַטֹּאתֵנוּour sins;כִּיforמֹחְלִיםforgiveגַּם־אֲנַחְנוּwe alsoלְכֹלevery oneהַחַיָּבthat is indebtedלָנוּto us.וְאַל־תְּבִיאֵנוּAnd lead us notלִידֵיinto the hands ofנִסָּיוֹןtemptation;כִּיbutאִם־הַצִּילֵנוּdeliver usמִן־הָרָע׃from evil.

    And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,מִיWhichבָכֶםof youאֲשֶׁר־לוֹshall haveאֹהֵבa friend,וְהָלַךְand shall goוּבָאand comeאֵלָיוunto himבַּחֲצוֹתat midnightהַלַּיְלָהof the night,וְאָמַרand sayאֵלָיוunto him,יְדִידִיFriend,הַלְוֵנִיlend meשְׁלשֶׁתthreeכִּכְּרוֹת־לָחֶם׃loaves of bread;

    And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;

    כִּי־אֹהֲבִיFor a friend of mineבָּאis comeאֵלַיto meמִן־הַדָּרֶךְfrom the way,וְלִיand I haveאֵין־כֹּלnothingלָשׂוּםto setלְפָנָיו׃before him?

    For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?

    וְהוּאAnd heמִבַּיִתfrom withinיַעֲנֶהshall answerוְיֹאמַרand say,אַל־תּוֹגִיעֵנִיTrouble me not:כִּי־כְבָרfor alreadyנִסְגְּרָהis shutהַדֶּלֶתthe door,וִילָדַיand my childrenשׁוֹכְבִיםare lyingעִמָּדִיwith meבַּמִּטָּהin bed;לֹא־אוּכַלI cannotלָקוּםriseוְלָתֶתand giveלָךְ׃unto you.

    And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.

    אֹמֵרsayאֲנִיIלָכֶםunto you,גַּםThoughכִּיthatלֹא־יָקוּםhe will not riseלָתֶת־לוֹand give him,עַל־הֱיוֹתוֹbecause he isאֹהֲבוֹhis friend,יָקוּםyet he will riseבַּעֲבוּרbecause ofעַזּוּתthe boldness ofפָּנָיוhis face,וְיִתֶּן־לוֹand give unto himכְּכׇל־צׇרְכּוֹ׃as many as he needeth.

    I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

    וְגַם־אֲנִיAnd I alsoאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,שַׁאֲלוּAsk,וְיִנָּתֵןand it shall be givenלָכֶםyou;דִּרְשׁוּseek,וְתִמְצָאוּand you shall find;דִּפְקוּknock,וְיִפָּתַחand it shall be openedלָכֶם׃unto you.

    And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

    כִּיForכׇּל־הַשֹּׁאֵלevery one that askethיְקַבֵּלreceiveth;וְהַדֹּרֵשׁand he that seekethיִמְצָאfindeth;וְהַדֹּפֵקand to him that knockethיִפָּתַח־לוֹ׃it shall be opened.

    For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

    וּמִיAnd whichבָּכֶםof youהָאָבis a father,אֲשֶׁרthat ifיִשְׁאַלshall askמִמֶּנּוּof himבְּנוֹa sonלֶחֶםbread,וְנָתַן־לוֹwill he give himאָבֶןa stone?וְאִם־דָּגor if a fish,הֲיִתֶּן־לוֹwill he give himנָחָשׁa serpentתַּחַתinstead ofהַדָּג׃the fish?

    If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?

  12. 12

    אוֹOrכִּי־יִשְׁאָלֶנּוּif he shall ask himבֵיצָהan egg,הֲיִתֶּן־לוֹwill he offer himעַקְרָב׃a scorpion?

    Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

  13. 13

    הֵן־אַתֶּםIf you then,הָרָעִיםbeing evil,יֹדְעִיםknow howלָתֵתto giveמַתָּנוֹתgiftsטֹבוֹתgoodלִבְנֵיכֶםunto your children:אַף־כִּיhow much moreהָאָבshall the Fatherמִן־הַשָּׁמַיִםfrom heavenיִתֵּןgiveאֶת־רוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁthe Holy Spiritלַשֹּׁאֲלִיםto them that askמֵאִתּוֹ׃him?

    If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

  14. 14

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passהַיּוֹםon a day,וַיְגָרֶשׁthat he was casting outשֵׁדa devil,וְהוּאand itאִלֵּםwas dumb.וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כַּאֲשֶׁרwhenיָצָאwas gone outהַשֵּׁדthe devil,וַיְדַבֵּרthat spake;הָאִלֵּםthe dumbוַיִּתְמְהוּand wonderedהָעָם׃the people.

    And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.

  15. 15

    וְיֵשׁBut there wereמֵהֶםof themאֲשֶׁרwhoאָמְרוּsaid,בְּבַעַל־זְבוּלThrough Beelzebubשַׂרthe chief ofהַשֵּׁדִיםthe devils,הוּאheמְגָרֵשׁcasteth outאֶת־הַשֵּׁדִים׃the devils.

    But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.

    וְיֵשׁAnd others,אֲשֶׁרwhoנִסּוּהוּtempting him,וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּsoughtמִמֶּנּוּof himאוֹתa signמִן־הַשָּׁמָיִם׃from heaven.

    And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.

  17. 17

    וְהוּאBut he,יָדַעknowingאֶת־מַחְשְׁבוֹתָםtheir thoughts,וַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,כׇּל־מַמְלָכָהEvery kingdomהַנֶּחֱלָקָהdividedעַל־עַצְמָהּagainst itselfתֵּחָרֵבis brought to desolation;וּבַיִתand a houseעַל־בַּיִתagainst a houseיִפֹּל׃falleth.

    But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.

  18. 18

    וְגַם־הַשָּׂטָןIf Satan alsoאִם־נֶחֱלַקbe dividedעַל־עַצְמוֹagainst himself,אֵיכָכָהhowתִּכּוֹןshall stand?מַמְלַכְתּוֹhis kingdomכִּיbecauseאֲמַרְתֶּםyou sayשֶׁבְּבַעַל־זְבוּלthat through Beelzebubמְגָרֵשׁcast outאֲנִיIאֶת־הַשֵּׁדִים׃devils.

    If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.

    וְאִם־אֲנִיAnd if Iמְגָרֵשׁcast outאֶת־הַשֵּׁדִיםdevilsבְּבַעַל־זְבוּלby Beelzebub,בְּנֵיכֶםby your sonsבְּמִיby whomהֵםdo theyמְגָרֲשִׁיםcastאֹתָםthem out?עַל־כֵּןthereforeהֵמָּהtheyיִהְיוּshall beשֹׁפְטֵיכֶם׃your judges.

    And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.

  20. 20

    וְאִם־בְּאֶצְבַּעBut if with the finger ofאֱלֹהִיםGodמְגָרֵשׁcast outאֲנִיIאֶת־הַשֵּׁדִיםdevils,הִנֵּהno doubtהִגִּיעָהis comeאֲלֵיכֶםupon youמַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.

    כְּשֶׁהַגִּבּוֹרWhen a strong manשֹׁמֵרarmed keepethאֶת־חֲצֵרוֹhis palace,וְנִשְׁקוֹand his armsעָלָיוupon him,שָׁלוֹםin peaceיִהְיֶהareרְכוּשׁוֹ׃his goods:

    When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:

  22. 22

    וְאִם־יָבוֹאBut when shall comeעָלָיוupon himחָזָקa strongerמִמֶּנּוּthan he,וּתְקָפוֹand overcome him,יִשָּׂאhe takethמִמֶּנּוּfrom himאֶת־נִשְׁקוֹhis armorאֲשֶׁרwhereinבָּטַח־בּוֹhe trusted,וְאֶת־מַלְקֹחוֹand his spoilsיְחַלֵּק׃he divideth.

    But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

  23. 23

    כֹּלEvery oneאֲשֶׁרthatאֵינֶנּוּis notאִתִּיwith meהוּאisלְנֶגְדִּיagainst me:וַאֲשֶׁרand he thatאֵינֶנּוּnotמְכַנֵּסgatherethאִתִּיwith meהוּאheמְפַזֵּר׃scattereth.

    He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

    הָרוּחַThe spiritהַטְּמֵאָהunclean,אַחֲרֵיafterצֵאתָהּshe goeth outמִן־הָאָדָםof a man,תְּשׁוֹטֵטwalkethבִּמְקֹמוֹתthrough placesצִיָּהdry,לְבַקֶּשׁ־לָהּseeking for herמָנוֹחַrest;וְלֹאandתִמְצָאfinding none,אָזthenתֹּאמַרshe saith,אָשׁוּבָה־נָּאI will return nowאֶל־בֵּיתִיunto my houseאֲשֶׁרwhenceיָצָאתִיI came outמִשָּׁם׃from thence.

    When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.

    וּבְבוֹאָהּAnd when she cometh,תִּמְצָאshe findethאֹתוֹitמְטֻאטָאsweptוּמְהֻדָּר׃and garnished.

    And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.

  26. 26

    וְאַחַרThenתֵּלֵךְgoeth she,וְלָקְחָהand taketh to herשֶׁבַעsevenרוּחוֹתspiritsאֲחֵרוֹתotherרָעוֹתmore wickedמִמֶּנָּהthan herself;וּבָאוּand they enter in,וְשָׁכְנוּand dwellשָׁםthere:וְהָיְתָהand isאַחֲרִיתthe last state ofהָאָדָםmanהַהוּאthatרָעָהworseמֵרֵאשִׁיתוֹ׃than the first.

    Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,כְּדַבְּרוֹas he spakeאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםthingsהָאֵלֶּהthese,וְאִשָּׁהa certain womanאַחַתoneמִן־הָעָםof the companyנָשְׂאָהlifted upאֶת־קוֹלָהּher voice,וַתֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,אַשְׁרֵיBlessed isהַבֶּטֶןthe wombאֲשֶׁרthatנְשָׂאַתְךָbare you,וְאַשְׁרֵיand blessed areהַשָּׁדַיִםthe papsאֲשֶׁרwhichיָנָקְתָּ׃you have sucked.

    And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.

    וְהוּאBut heאָמָרsaid,וְאַףYeaכִּי־אַשְׁרֵיrather, blessed areהַשֹּׁמְעִיםthey that hearוְהַשֹּׁמְרִיםand keepאֵת־דְּבַרthe word ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

  29. 29

    וּבְהִקָּבֵץAnd when were gathered thick togetherעַם־רָבthe people,וַיִּפְתַּחhe began,פִּיוopening his mouth,וַיֹּאמַרsaying,הַדּוֹרgenerationהַזֶּהThisדּוֹרa generationרָעevilהוּאis:אוֹתa signהוּאtheyמְבַקֵּשׁseek;וְאוֹתand a signלֹאnoיִנָּתֶן־לוֹshall be given it,בִּלְתִּיbutאִם־אוֹתthe sign ofיוֹנָהJonasהַנָּבִיא׃the prophet.

    And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.

  30. 30

    כִּיForכַּאֲשֶׁרasהָיָהwasיוֹנָהJonasלְאַנְשֵׁיunto the men ofנִינְוֵהNineveלְאוֹתa sign,כֵּןsoיִהְיֶהshall beגַם־בֶּן־הָאָדָםalso the Son of manלַדּוֹרto generationהַזֶּה׃this.

    For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.

  31. 31

    מַלְכַּתThe queen ofתֵּימָןthe southתַּעֲמֹדshall rise upלַמִּשְׁפָּטin the judgmentעִם־אַנְשֵׁיwith the men ofהַדּוֹרgenerationהַזֶּהthis,וְהִרְשִׁיעָהand condemnאוֹתָםthem:כִּיforבָאָהshe cameמִקְצוֹתfrom the utmost parts ofהָאָרֶץthe earthלִשְׁמֹעַto hearאֶת־חׇכְמַתthe wisdom ofשְׁלֹמֹהSolomon;וְהִנֵּהand, behold,יֶשׁ־פֹּהhere isגָּדוֹלa greaterמִשְּׁלֹמֹה׃than Solomon.

    The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

  32. 32

    אַנְשֵׁיThe men ofנִינְוֵהNineveיַעַמְדוּshall rise upלַמִּשְׁפָּטin the judgmentעִם־הַדּוֹרwith generationהַזֶּהthis,וְהִרְשִׁיעֻהוּand shall condemn it:כִּיforהֵםtheyשָׁבוּrepentedבִּקְרִיאַתat the preaching ofיוֹנָהJonas;וְהִנֵּהand, behold,יֶשׁ־פֹּהhere isגָּדוֹלa greaterמִיוֹנָה׃than Jonas.

    The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

  33. 33

    אֵיןNoמַדְלִיק־נֵרman, lighting a candle,לָשׂוּםputteth itבַּסֵּתֶרin a secret place,אוֹ־תַחַתneither underהָאֵיפָהa bushel,כִּיbutיְשִׂמֵהוּhe putteth itעַלonהַמְּנוֹרָהa candlestick,לְמַעַןthatיִרְאוּmay seeבָּאֵיthey which come intoהַבַּיִתthe houseאֶת־אוֹרוֹ׃the light.

    No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.

  34. 34

    נֵרThe light ofהַגּוּףthe bodyהוּאisהָעָיִןthe eye:לָכֵןthereforeעֵינְךָwhen your eyeכִּי־תִהְיֶהwhen isתְמִימָהsingle,גַּםalsoכׇּל־גּוּפְךָyour whole bodyיֵאוֹרis full of light;וּבִהְיוֹתָהּbut when it isרָעָהevil,וְחָשַׁךְis full of darknessגַּם־גּוּפֶךָ׃your body also.

    The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.

  35. 35

    עַל־כֵּןThereforeהִשָּׁמֶר־לָךְtake heedפֶּן־יֶחְשַׁךְthat be not darknessהָאוֹרthe lightאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּקִרְבֶּךָ׃is in you.

    Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.

  36. 36

    וְהִנֵּהAnd, behold,אִם־גּוּפְךָIf your whole bodyכֻּלּוֹwholeאוֹרbe full of light,וְאֵיןhaving noבּוֹin itכׇּל־דְּבַר־חֹשֶׁךְany part dark,אָזthenיֵאוֹרshall be full of light,כֻּלּוֹthe wholeכְּאִלּוּas whenיָאִירdoth give lightלְךָunto youהַנֵּרthe candleבִּבְרַקby the bright shining ofנׇגְהוֹ׃its brightness.

    If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passבְדַבְּרוֹas he spake,וַיְבַקֵּשׁbesoughtמִמֶּנּוּof himפָּרוּשׁa Phariseeאֶחָדcertainלֶאֱכֹלto dineאִתּוֹwith himלָחֶםfood:וַיָּבֹאand he went in,הַבַּיְתָהinto the house,וַיַּסֵּב׃and sat down to meat.

    And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.

  38. 38

    וַיַּרְאAnd when saw it,הַפָּרוּשׁthe Phariseeוַיִּתְמַהּhe marvelledאֲשֶׁרthatלֹא־נָטַלhe had not washedיָדָיוhis handsרִאשׁוֹנָהfirstלִפְנֵיbeforeהַסְּעוּדָה׃the dinner.

    And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.

  39. 39

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֵלָיוunto him,הָאָדוֹןthe LordהֵןBehold,עַתָּהnowהַפְּרוּשִׁיםyou Phariseesמְטַהֲרִיםmake cleanאַתֶּםdoאֶת־הַכּוֹסthe cupוְהַקְּעָרָהand the platter;מִחוּץthe outside ofוְקִרְבְּכֶםbut your inward partמָלֵאis full ofגָּזֵלraveningוָרָשַׁע׃and wickedness.

    And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.

  40. 40

    הַכְּסִילִיםYou fools,הֲלֹאdid notעֹשֵׂהhe that madeחוּצוֹthat which is withoutשֶׁלofדָּבָרa thingגַּם־עָשָׂהmake alsoאֶת־תּוֹכוֹ׃that which is within?

    Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?

  41. 41

    אֲבָל־תְּנוּBut rather giveלִצְדָקָהalmsאֵת־אֲשֶׁר־בָּםsuch things as you have;וְהִנֵּהand, behold,הַכֹּלall thingsטָהוֹרare cleanלָכֶם׃unto you.

    But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.

  42. 42

    אוֹיBut woeלָכֶםunto you,הַפְּרוּשִׁיםPharisees!הַמְעַשְּׂרִיםfor you titheאֶת־הַמִּנְתָּאmintוְאֶת־הַפִּיגַםand rueוְאֵתandכׇּל־הַיָּרָקall manner of herbs,וּמַנִּיחִיםand pass overאֶת־הַמִּשְׁפָּטjudgmentוְאֵתandאַהֲבַתthe love ofאֱלֹהִיםGod:וַעֲלֵיכֶםthese ought youלַעֲשׂוֹתto have done,אֶת־אֵלֶּהthese,וְלֹאand notלְהַנִּיחַto leave undoneגַּםalsoאֶת־אֵלֶּה׃the other.

    But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

  43. 43

    אוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto you,הַפְּרוּשִׁיםPharisees!כִּיforתְאֵהֲבוּyou loveלָשֶׁבֶתto sitרִאשֹׁנִיםin the uppermost seatsבְּבָתֵּיin the houses ofכְנֵסִיּוֹתsynagogues,וְשֶׁיִּשְׁאֲלוּand greetingsבִשְׁלוֹמְכֶםof your peaceבַּשְּׁוָקִים׃in the markets.

    Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.

  44. 44

    אוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto you,הַסּוֹפְרִיםscribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees,הַחֲנֵפִיםhypocrites!כִּיforאַתֶּםyou areכַּקְּבָרִיםas gravesאֲשֶׁרwhichאֵינָםare notנִכָּרִיםapparent,וּבְנֵיand the sons ofהָאָדָםmanמִתְהַלְּכִיםwalkעֲלֵיהֶםover them,וְלֹאand notיָדָעוּ׃are aware of them.

    Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.

    וַיַּעַןThen answeredאֶחָדoneמֵחַכְמֵיof the lawyers ofהַתּוֹרָהthe law,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,רַבִּיMaster,בִּדְבָרֶיךָwith your sayingsאֵלֶּהthese,תֵּחָרֵףyou reproachestגַּם־אֹתָנוּ׃us also.

    Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.

  46. 46

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he said,אוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto youחַכְמֵיyou lawyers ofהַתּוֹרָהthe lawגַּםalso!אַתֶּםyouכִּיforעֹמְסִיםyou ladeאַתֶּםyouעַל־בְּנֵיupon the sons ofהָאָדָםmanמַשָּׂאוֹתburdensכְּבֵדִיםgrievousמִסְּבֹלto be borne,וְאַתֶּםand youבְּעַצְמְכֶםyourselvesאֵינְכֶםdo notנֹגְעִיםtouchבַּמַּשָּׂאוֹתthe burdensגַּם־בְּאַחַתwith one ofמֵאֶצְבְּעוֹתֵיכֶם׃your fingers.

    And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

  47. 47

    אוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto you!כִּי־בוֹנִיםfor you buildאַתֶּםyouנְפָשׁוֹתthe sepulchresעַל־קִבְרוֹתupon the graves ofהַנְּבִיאִיםthe prophets,וַאֲבוֹתֵיכֶםand your fathersהָרְגוּkilledאוֹתָם׃them.

    Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

  48. 48

    וּבְכֵןTruly thereforeעֵדִיםwitnessesאַתֶּםyou bear,וְרוֹצִיםand allowבְּמַעֲשֵׂיthe deeds ofאֲבוֹתֵיכֶםyour fathers:כִּיforהֵמָּהtheyהָרְגוּindeed killedאוֹתָםthem,וְאַתֶּםand youבּוֹנִיםbuildאֶת־קִבְרֵיהֶם׃their sepulchres.

    Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.

  49. 49

    בַּעֲבוּרThereforeזֹאתalsoגַּם־אָמְרָהsaidחׇכְמַתthe wisdom ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,אֶשְׁלַחI will sendאֲלֵיהֶםthemנְבִיאִיםprophetsוּשְׁלִיחִיםand apostles,וּמֵהֶםand some of themיַהַרְגוּthey shall slayוְיִרְדֹּפוּ׃and persecute:

    Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:

  50. 50

    לְמַעַןThatיִדָּרֵשׁmay be requiredמִן־הַדּוֹרof generationהַזֶּהthisדַּםthe blood ofכׇּל־הַנְּבִיאִיםall the prophets,אֲשֶׁרwhichנִשְׁפַּךְwas shedלְמִן־הִוָּסֵדfrom the foundation ofהָאָרֶץ׃the world;

    That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;

  51. 51

    מִדַּם־הֶבֶלFrom the blood of Abelעַד־דַּםunto the blood ofזְכַרְיָהוּZacharias,אֲשֶׁרwhichנֶהֱרַגperishedבֵּיןbetweenהַמִּזְבֵּחַthe altarוְלַבָּיִתand the temple:אָכֵןverilyאֹמֵרsayאֲנִיIלָכֶםunto you,דָּרוֹשׁrequiredיִדָּרֵשׁIt shall beמִן־הַדּוֹרof generationהַזֶּה׃this.

    From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.

  52. 52

    אוֹיWoeלָכֶםunto you,חַכְמֵיlawyers ofהַתּוֹרָהthe law!כִּי־הֲסִירֹתֶםfor you have taken awayאֶת־מַפְתֵּחthe key ofהַדָּעַתknowledge:אַתֶּםyouלֹא־בָאתֶםentered not in yourselves,וְאֶת־הַבָּאִיםand them that were entering inמְנַעְתֶּם׃you hindered.

    Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.

  53. 53

    וַיְהִיAnd asכְּדַבְּרוֹhe saidלָהֶםunto themאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםthingsהָאֵלֶּהthese,וַיָּחֵלּוּbeganהַסּוֹפְרִיםthe scribesוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand the Phariseesלִצְרֹרto urgeאוֹתוֹhimמְאֹדvehemently,וּלְהַקְשׁוֹתand to provoke him to speakלוֹof himדְּבָרִיםthingsהַרְבֵּה׃of many:

    And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:

  54. 54

    וַיֶּאֶרְבוּLaying waitלוֹfor him,לִלְכֹּדand seeking to catchדָּבָרsomethingמִפִּיהוּout of his mouth,לְמַעַןthatיִמְצְאוּthey might find occasionעָלָיוagainst himעֲלִילֹתto accuseדְּבָרִים׃him.

    Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.
