1. 1

   וַיְהִיAndבְּעׇבְרוֹas he passed by,וַיַּרְאhe sawאִישׁa manוְהוּאand heעִוֵּרwhich was blindמִיּוֹםfromהִוָּלְדוֹ׃his birth.

   And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.

2. 2

   וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּAnd askedאֹתוֹhim,תַּלְמִידָיוhis disciplesלֵאמֹרsaying,רַבִּיMaster,מִיwhoהַחֹטֶאdid sin,הוּאthis man,אוֹorיֹלְדָיוhis parents,כִּיthatנוֹלַדhe was bornעִוֵּר׃blind?

   And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?

   וַיַּעַןAnswered,יֵשׁוּעַJesusלֹאNeitherהוּאhath this manחָטָאsinned,וְלֹאnorיוֹלְדָיוhis parents:אַךְbutלְמַעַןthatיִגָּלוּ־בוֹshould be made manifest in him.מַעַלְלֵי־אֵל׃the works of God

   Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

   עָלַיI mustלַעֲשׂוֹתworkמַעֲשֵׂיthe works ofשֹׁלְחִיhim that sent me,בְּעוֹדwhileיוֹםit is day:יָבוֹאcometh,הַלַּיְלָהthe nightאֲשֶׁר־בּוֹwhenלֹא־יָכֹלno man canאִישׁa manלַעֲשׂוֹת׃work.

   I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

   בְּעוֹדֶנִּיAs long as I amבָּעוֹלָםin the world,אוֹרthe light ofהָעוֹלָםthe world.אָנִי׃I am

   As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

6. 6

   וַיְהִיWhenכְּדַבְּרוֹhe had thus spoken,זֹאתthisוַיָּרָקhe spatעַל־הָאָרֶץon the ground,וַיַּעַשׂand madeטִיטclayמִן־הָרוֹקof the spittle,וַיִּמְרַחand he anointedאֶת־הַטִּיטwith the clayעַל־עֵינֵיthe eyes ofהָעִוֵּר׃the blind man with the clay,

   When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,

   וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֵלָיוunto him,לֵךְGo,וּרְחַץwashבִּבְרֵכַתin the pool ofהַשִּׁלֹחַSiloam,הוּא(which is by interpretation,שָׁלוּחַSent.)וַיֵּלֶךְHe went his wayוַיִּרְחַץtherefore, and washed,וַיָּבֹאand cameוְעֵינָיוand his eyesרֹאוֹת׃seeing.

   And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּTherefore saidשְׁכֵנָיוthe neighbors,וַאֲשֶׁרand they whichרָאוּhad seenאֹתוֹhimלְפָנִיםbeforeכִּי־עִוֵּרthat he was blind,הוּאheהֲלֹאIs notהוּאthis heהַיּשֵׁבthat satוְשֹׁאֵלand begged?צְדָקָה׃alms?

   The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

9. 9

   אֵלֶּהSomeאָמְרוּsaid,כִּי־זֶהThis isהוּאhe:וְאֵלֶּהothersאָמְרוּsaid,אַךְ־דּוֹמֶהbut he is likeלּוֹhim:וְהוּאbut heאָמַרsaid,אֲנִיIהוּא׃am he.

   Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.

    וַיֹּאמְרוּTherefore said theyאֵלָיוunto him,וְאֵיךְHowנִפְקְחוּwere opened?עֵינֶיךָ׃your eyes

    Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?

11. 11

    וַיַּעַןHe answeredוַיֹּאמֶרand said,אִישׁA manאֲשֶׁר־נִקְרָאthat is calledשְׁמוֹhis nameיֵשׁוּעַJesusעָשָׂהmadeטִיטclay,וַיִּמְרַחand anointedעַל־עֵינַיmine eyes,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלַיunto me,לֵךְGoוּרְחַץand washבִּבְרֵכַתin the pool ofהַשִּׁלֹחַSiloam:וָאֵלֵךְand I wentוָאֶרְחַץand washed,וַתִּפָּקַחְנָהand I received sight.עֵינָי׃mine eyes.

    He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.

12. 12

    וַיֹּאמְרוּThen said theyאֵלָיוunto him,וְאַיּוֹWhere is he?וַיֹּאמֶרHe said,לֹאnot.יָדָעְתִּי׃I know

    Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

13. 13

    וַיָּבִיאוּThey broughtאֶת־הָאִישׁto the Pharisees himאֲשֶׁרthatהָיָהwasעִוֵּרblind.לְפָנִיםaforetimeאֶל־הַפְּרוּשִׁים׃to the Pharisees.

    They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

14. 14

    וְהַיּוֹםAnd it wasאֲשֶׁרwhenעָשָׂה־בוֹmadeיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֶת־הַטִּיטthe clay,וַיִּפְקַחand openedאֶת־עֵינָיוhis eyes.הָיָהit wasיוֹםthe day ofהַשַּׁבָּת׃the sabbath

    And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

15. 15

    וַיּוֹסִיפוּThen againלִשְׁאֹלasked himאֹתוֹhimגַּם־הַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Pharisees alsoאֵיךְhowנִפְקְחוּhe had receivedעֵינָיוhis sight.וַיֹּאמֶרHe saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,טִיטclayשָׂםHe putעַל־עֵינַיupon mine eyes,וָאֶרְחַץand I washed,וְהִנְנִיandרֹאֶה׃I see.

    Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.

16. 16

    וַיֹּאמְרוּTherefore saidמִקְצָתsome ofהַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Pharisees,זֶהThisהָאִישׁmanלֹאnotמֵאֵתofאֱלֹהִיםGod,הוּאisכִּיbecauseלֹא־יִשְׁמֹרhe keepeth notאֶת־הַשַּׁבָּתthe sabbath day.וַאֲחֵרִיםOthersאָמְרוּsaid,אֵיכָהHowיוּכַלcanאִישׁa manחֹטֵאthat is a sinnerלַעֲשׂוֹתdoאֹתוֹתmiracles?כָּאֵלֶּהsuchוַתְּהִי־מַחֲלֹקֶתAnd there was a divisionבֵּינֵיהֶם׃among them.

    Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

17. 17

    וַיּוֹסִיפוּThey sayוַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidאֶל־הָעִוֵּרunto the blind man again,וְאַתָּהWhatמַה־תֹּאמַרsay youלוֹof him,כִּיthatפָקַחhe hath openedעֵינֶיךָyour eyes?וַיֹּאמֶרHe said,נָבִיאA prophet.הוּא׃He is

    They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.

18. 18

    וְלֹא־הֶאֱמִינוּBut did not believeהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsכִּיconcerning him, thatעִוֵּרhe had been blind,הָיָהhe had beenוְאֹרוּand received lightעֵינָיוhis eyes,עַד־אֲשֶׁרuntilקָרְאוּthey calledאֶל־יוֹלְדֵיthe parents ofהַנִּרְפָּא׃him that had received his sight.

    But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.

19. 19

    וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּAnd they askedאֹתָםthem,לֵאמֹרsaying,הֲזֶהIs thisבִנְכֶםyour son,אֲשֶׁרwhoאֲמַרְתֶּםyou sayנוֹלַדwas bornעִוֵּרblind?וְאֵיכָהhowהוּאthenרֹאֶהdoth he now see?עָתָּה׃now?

    And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?

20. 20

    וַיַּעֲנוּAnsweredאֹתָםthemיוֹלְדָיוHis parentsוַיֹּאמְרוּand said,יָדַעְנוּWe knowכִּיthatזֶהthis isהוּאheבְּנֵנוּour son,וְכִיand thatנוֹלַדhe was bornעִוֵּר׃blind:

    His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:

21. 21

    אֲבָלButלֹאnotיָדַעְנוּwe knowאֵיךְhowהוּאheרֹאֶהseeth,עַתָּהnowוְלֹאorיָדַעְנוּwe know not;מִיwhoפָקַחhath openedאֶת־עֵינָיוhis eyes,הֲלֹאis he notבֶן־דַּעַתof age?הוּאheשַׁאֲלוּaskאֶת־פִּיהוּhim:וְהוּאheיַגִּידshall speakמֶה־הָיָהfor himself.לוֹ׃unto him

    But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.

22. 22

    כָּזֹאתThese wordsדִבְּרוּspakeיוֹלְדָיוhis parents,מִיִּרְאָתָםbecause they fearedאֶת־הַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews:כִּיforהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsכְּבָרalready,נוֹעֲצוּhad agreedלְנַדּוֹתthat he should be put out of the synagogue.אֶת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרthat if any man did confess that he was Christ,יוֹדֶהshould confessכִּיthatהוּאheהַמָּשִׁיחַ׃is Christ,

    These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

23. 23

    עַל־כֵּןThereforeאָמְרוּsaidיוֹלְדָיוhis parents,בֶּן־דַּעַתHe is of age;הוּאheשַׁאֲלוּaskאֶת־פִּיהוּ׃him.

    Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.

24. 24

    וַיִּקְרְאוּThen again called theyשֵׁנִיתa second timeלָאִישׁthe manאֲשֶׁרthatהָיָהwasעִוֵּרblind,וַיֹּאמְרוּand saidאֵלָיוunto him,תֵּןGiveכָּבוֹדpraiseלֵאלֹהִיםto God:אֲנַחְנוּweיָדַעְנוּknowכִּי־הָאִישׁthat manהַזֶּהthisחֹטֵאis a sinner.הוּא׃he

    Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.

25. 25

    וַיַּעַןHe answeredוַיֹּאמַרand said,אִם־חֹטֵאWhether he be a sinnerהָאִישׁthe manלֹאnot:יָדָעְתִּיI knowאַחַתone thingיָדַעְתִּיI know,כִּיthat,עִוֵּרblind,הָיִיתִיwhereas I wasוְעַתָּהnowהִנְנִיIרֹאֶה׃see.

    He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

26. 26

    וַיֹּאמְרוּThen said theyאֵלָיוto himעוֹדagain,מֶה־עָשָׂהWhat did heלָךְto you?אֵיךְhowפָּקַחopened heעֵינֶיךָ׃your eyes?

    Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?

27. 27

    וַיַּעַןHe answeredאֹתָםthem,כְּבָרalready,אָמַרְתִּיI have toldלָכֶםyouהֲלֹאandשְׁמַעְתֶּםyou did not hear:וּמַה־לָכֶםwhereforeלִשְׁמֹעַwould you hear itשֵׁנִיתagain?הֲתַחְפְּצוּwill youגַם־אַתֶּםalsoלִהְיוֹתbeתַּלְמִידָיו׃his disciples?

    He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?

28. 28

    וַיְחָרֲפוּThen they reviledאֹתוֹhim,וַיֹּאמְרוּand said,אַתָּהYouתַלְמִידוֹart his disciple;וַאֲנַחְנוּbut weתַּלְמִידָיוare disciples.שֶׁל־משֶׁה׃Moses'

    Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.

29. 29

    אֲנַחְנוּWeיוֹדְעִיםknowכִּיthatאֶל־משֶׁהunto Moses:דִבֶּרspakeהָאֱלֹהִיםGodוְאֶת־זֶהand as for this fellow,לֹאnotיָדַעְנוּwe knowמֵאַיִןwhenceהוּא׃he is.

    We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.

30. 30

    וַיַּעַןAnsweredהָאִישׁThe manוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,דָּבָרa marvelous thing,נִפְלָאmarvelousהוּאWhy herein isאֲשֶׁרthatאַתֶּםyouלֹאnotיְדַעְתֶּםknowמֵאַיִןwhenceהוּאhe is,וְהוּאand yet heפָקַחhath openedאֶת־עֵינָי׃mine eyes.

    The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

31. 31

    וְהִנֵּהNowיָדַעְנוּwe knowכִּיthatאֶת־הַחַטָּאִיםsinners:לֹא־יִשְׁמַעGod heareth notאֵלGod:כִּיbutאִם־אֶת־יְרֵאif any man be a worshipperאֱלֹהִיםof God,וְעֹשֵׂהand doethרְצוֹנוֹhis will,אֹתוֹhimיִשְׁמָע׃he heareth.

    Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

32. 32

    מֵעוֹלָםSince the world beganלֹאwas it notנִשְׁמָעheardאֲשֶׁר־פָּקַחthat any man openedאִישׁa manעֵינֵיthe eyes ofעִוֵּרone that was born blind.מֵרָחֶם׃from the womb.

    Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.

33. 33

    לוּלֵאIf notהָיָהwereזֶהthis manמֵאֵתofאֱלֹהִיםGod,לֹאnot.הָיָהwouldיָכֹלhe couldלַעֲשׂוֹתdoמְאוּמָה׃nothing

    If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

34. 34

    וַיַּעֲנוּThey answeredוַיֹּאמְרוּand saidאֵלָיוunto him,הֵןYouבַּחֲטָאִיםin sins,נוֹלַדְתָּwast altogether bornכֻלָּךְaltogether,וְאַתָּהand do youתְלַמְּדֵנוּteach us?וַיֶּהְדְּפֻהוּAnd they castהַחוּצָה׃him out.

    They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

35. 35

    וַיִּשְׁמַעHeardיֵשׁוּעַJesusכִּיthatהֲדָפֻהוּthey had cast himהַחוּצָהout;וַיִּפְגְּשֵׁהוּand when he had found him,וַיֹּאמֶרhe saidאֵלָיוunto him,הֲתַאֲמִיןDo you believeבְּבֶן־הָאָדָם׃on the Son of God?

    Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

36. 36

    וַיַּעַןHe answeredוַיֹּאמַרand said,מִיWhoהוּא־זֶהis he,אֲדֹנִיLord,וְאַאֲמִיןthat I might believeבּוֹ׃on him?

    He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?

37. 37

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֵלָיוunto him,יֵשׁוּעַJesusהֵן־רָאִיתָYou have both seenאֹתוֹhim,וְהַמְדַבֵּרand it is he that talkethאֵלֶיךָwith you.הִנֵּהbehold,זֶהthisהוּא׃he

    And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

38. 38

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he said,אֲנִיIמַאֲמִיןbelieve.אֲדֹנִיLord,וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּAnd he worshipedלוֹ׃him.

    And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

39. 39

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd said,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאֲנִיIבָאתִיam comeלָעוֹלָםinto world,הַזֶּהthisלָדִיןFor judgmentלְמַעַןthatיִרְאוּthey which see not might see;הַעִוְרִיםthe blind,וְהָרֹאִיםand that they which seeיִהְיוּmight be madeלְעִוְרִים׃blind.

    And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.

40. 40

    וַאֲשֶׁרAnd some ofהָיוּwereעִמּוֹwith himמִן־הַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Pharisees whichשָׁמְעוּheardדְבָרָיוthese words,וַיֹּאמְרוּand saidאֵלָיוunto him,הֲַגַםAre weאֲנַחְנוּweעִוְרִים׃blind also?

    And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?

41. 41

    וַיֹּאמֶרSaidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,לוּIfהֱיִיתֶםyou wereעִוְרִיםblind,לֹא־הָיָהyou should have noבָכֶםin youחֵטְאsin:וְעַתָּהbut nowאֲמַרְתֶּםyou say,פִּקְחִיםWe see;אֲנַחְנוּwe;וְתַעֲמֹדtherefore remaineth.חַטַּאתְכֶם׃your sin

    Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
