1. 1

   אַחַרAfterהַדְּבָרִיםthingsהָאֵלֶּהtheseהָלַךְwalkedיֵשׁוּעַJesusבְּאֶרֶץinהַגָּלִילGalilee:הָלוֹךְwalkingוְעָבוֹרand passing:כִּיforלֹאhe would notחָפֵץwould heלְהִתְהַלֵּךְwalkבִּיהוּדָהin Jewry,עַל־אֲשֶׁרbecauseבִּקְשׁוּsoughtהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsלַהֲמִיתוֹ׃to kill him.

   After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.

   וַיִּקְרַבNow was at hand.חַגfeastהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews'חַגthe feastהַסֻּכּוֹת׃of tabernacles

   Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.

   וַיֹּאמְרוּSaidאֵלָיוunto him,אֱחָיוHis brethrenקוּםDepartוְלֵךְand goמִזֶּהhence,אַרְצָהand goיְהוּדָהinto Judaea,לְמַעַןthatיִרְאוּmay seeגַם־תַּלְמִידֶיךָyour disciples alsoאֶת־הַמַּעֲשִׂיםthe worksאֲשֶׁר־אַתָּהthat youעֹשֶׂה׃doest.

   His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judæa, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.

   כִּיForלֹא־יַעֲשֶׂהthere is noאִישׁmanדָּבָרthat doeth any thingבַּסֵּתֶרin secret,וְהוּאand he himselfחָפֵץseekethלְהִוָּדֵעַto be known openly.אִם־עֹשֶׂהIf you doאַתָּהyouכָּאֵלֶּהthese things,הֵרָאֵהshew thyselfאֶל־הָעוֹלָם׃to the world.

   For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.

   כִּי־אֶחָיוFor neither did his brethrenגַּם־הֵםeven theyלֹאnotהֶאֱמִינוּbelieveבּוֹ׃in him.

   For neither did his brethren believe in him.

6. 6

   וַיֹּאמֶרThen saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,יֵשׁוּעַJesusעִתִּיMy timeלֹא־בָאָהis notעַד־עָתָּהyet come:וְעִתְּכֶםbut your timeתָּמִידis alwayנְכוֹנָה׃ready.

   Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.

   לֹא־יוּכַלcannotהָעוֹלָםThe worldלִשְׂנוֹאhateאֶתְכֶםyou;וְאֹתִיbut meיִשְׂנָאit hateth,בַּאֲשֶׁרbecauseאֲנִיIמֵעִידtestifyעָלָיוof it,כִּיthatרָעִיםare evil.מַעֲלָלָיו׃the works thereof

   The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

8. 8

   עֲלוּGo you upאַתֶּםyouלָחֹגup to keepאֶת־הֶחָגthis feast:אֲנִיIלֹאnotאֶעֱלֶהgo upאֶל־הֶחַגunto feast;הַזֶּהthisכִּיforעִתִּיmy timeלֹאnotמָלְאָהis full comeעַד־עָתָּה׃as yet.

   Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.

9. 9

   כָּזֹאתthese thingsדִבֵּרWhen he had saidוַיֵּשֶׁבunto them, he abode stillבַּגָּלִיל׃in Galilee.

   When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

10. 10

    וַיְהִיButכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenעָלוּwere gone up,אֶחָיוhis brethrenלָרֶגֶלup to the feast,וַיַּעַלthen went he upגַּם־הוּאalsoלֹאnotבַגָּלוּיopenly,כִּיbutאִםratherכְּמִסְתַּתֵּר׃as it were in secret.

    But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

11. 11

    וְהַיְּהוּדִיםThen the Jewsבִּקְשֻׁהוּsought himבֶחָגat the feast,וַיֹּאמְרוּand said,אַיּוֹ׃Where is he?

    Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

12. 12

    וַתְּהִיAnd there wasתְּלוּנָהmurmuringרַבָּהmuchעַל־אֹדוֹתָיוamong the people concerning him:בְּתוֹךְamongהָעָםthe peopleאֵלֶּהfor someאָמְרוּsaid,טוֹבa good man:הוּאHe isוְאֵלֶּהothersאָמְרוּsaid,לֹאNay;כִּי־מַתְעֶהbut he deceivethהוּאheאֶת־הָעָם׃the people.

    And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.

13. 13

    אַךְHowbeitאֵין־אִישׁno manמְדַבֵּרspakeעָלָיוof himבָּרַבִּיםopenlyמִפְּנֵיforיִרְאַתfear ofהַיְּהוּדִים׃the Jews.

    Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

14. 14

    וַיְהִיNowבַּחֲצִיabout the midst ofיְמֵיthe days ofהֶחָגthe feastוְיֵשׁוּעַJesusעָלָהwent upאֶל־הַמִּקְדָּשׁinto the temple,וַיְלַמֵּד׃and taught.

    Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

15. 15

    וַיִּתְמְהוּAnd marvelled,הַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsוַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,בַּמֶּהHowיָדַעknowethזֶהthis manסֵפֶרletters,וְהוּאhavingלֹאneverלָמָד׃learned?

    And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

16. 16

    וַיַּעַןAnsweredאֹתָםthem,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמַרand said,לִקְחִיMy doctrineלֹא־שֶׁלִּיis not mine,הוּאheכִּיbutאִםratherשֶׁל־שֹׁלְחִי׃his that sent me.

    Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

17. 17

    הֶחָפֵץIf any man willלַעֲשׂוֹתdoרְצוֹנוֹhis will,יֵדַעhe shall knowלִקְחִיof the doctrine,אִם־מֵאֵתwhether it be ofאֱלֹהִיםGod,הוּאheאוֹor whetherמִנַּפְשִׁיof myself.אֲַדַּבֵּר׃I speak

    If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

18. 18

    הַמְדַבֵּרHe that speakethמִנַּפְשׁוֹof himselfכְּבוֹדglory:עַצְמוֹhis ownיְבַקֵּשׁseekethוְהַמְבַקֵּשׁbut he that seekethכְּבוֹדglory ofשֹׁלְחוֹhim that sent him,נֶאֱמָןis true,הוּאheוְאֵיןand noעַוְלָתָהunrighteousnessבּוֹ׃is in him.

    He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

19. 19

    הֲלֹאDid notמשֶׁהMosesנָתַןgiveלָכֶםyouאֶת־הַתּוֹרָהthe law,וְאֵין־אִישׁand yet noneמִכֶּםof youעֹשֶׂהkeepethהַתּוֹרָהthe law?מַדּוּעַWhyתְּבַקְשׁוּgo you aboutלְהָרְגֵנִי׃to kill me?

    Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?

20. 20

    וַיַּעַןAnsweredהָעָםThe peopleוַיֹּאמַרand said,שֵׁדa devilבָּךְYou have:מִיwhoמְבַקֵּשׁgoeth aboutלְהׇרְגֶךָ׃to kill you?

    The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?

21. 21

    וַיַּעַןAnsweredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidלָהֶםunto them,מַעֲשֶׂהwork,אֶחָדoneעָשִׂיתִיI have doneוְכֻלְּכֶםand you allעָלָיוat itתִּתְמָהוּ׃marvel.

    Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.

22. 22

    משֶׁהMosesנָתַןtherefore gaveלָכֶםunto youהַמִּילָהcircumcision;אַךְ(notלֹאnotמִמּשֶׁהbecause it is of Moses,הִיאsheכִּיbutאִםratherמִן־הָאָבוֹתof the fathers;)וּבְיוֹםandהַשַּׁבָּתon the sabbath dayתָּמוּלוּyou circumciseכׇל־זָכָר׃a man.

    Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.

23. 23

    וְעַתָּהIfאִם־תִּמּוֹלreceive circumcisionעׇרְלַתthe foreskin ofאָדָםa manבַּשַּׁבָּתon the sabbath day,לְמַעַןthatאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־תוּפַרshould not be broken;תּוֹרַתthe law ofמשֶׁהMosesמַה־תִּקְצְפוּare you angryעָלַיat me,כִּיbecauseרִפֵּאתִיI have madeהָאִישׁa manכֻּלּוֹevery whitבַּשַּׁבָּת׃whole on the sabbath day?

    If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

24. 24

    אַל־תִּשְׁפְּטוּJudge notלְמַרְאֵהaccording to the sight ofעָיִןthe eye,כִּיbutאִם־מִשְׁפַּט־צֶדֶקjudgment righteousשְׁפֹטוּ׃judge.

    Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

25. 25

    וַיֹּאמְרוּThen saidאֲנָשִׁיםsomeמִיֹּשְׁבֵיof them ofיְרוּשָׁלָיִםJerusalem,הֲלֹאIs notזֶהthisהוּאhe,אֲשֶׁרwhomבִּקְשׁוּthey seekלְהׇרְגוֹ׃to kill?

    Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

26. 26

    וְהִנֵּהBut, lo,הוּאheדֹּבֵרspeakethבָּרַבִּיםboldly,וְלֹאand they sayיִגְעֲרוּnothingבוֹunto him.הַאַףDoאֻמְנָםindeedיָדְעוּknowרָאשֵׁינוּthe rulersכִּי־בֶאֱמֶתthat this is the veryזֶהthisהוּאheהַמָּשִׁיחַ׃Christ?

    But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?

27. 27

    אַךְHowbeitהֲלֹאdo we notיָדַעְנוּknowזֶהthis manמֵאַיִןwhenceהוּאhe is:וְהַמָּשִׁיחַbut when Christכִּיwhenיָבוֹאcometh,לֹא־יֵדַעno man knowethאִישׁa manאֵי־מִזֶּהwhenceהוּא׃he is.

    Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

28. 28

    אָזThenקָרָאcriedיֵשׁוּעַJesusבַּמִּקְדָּשׁin the templeוַיְלַמֵּדas he taught,וַיֹּאמֶרsaying,הֵןYou bothיְדַעְתֶּםknowאֹתִיme,אַף־יְדַעְתֶּםand you knowמֵאַיִןwhenceאָנִיI am:וּמִנַּפְשִׁיand of myselfלֹא־בָאתִיI am not come,אָכֵןbutיֵשׁthere isנֶאֱמָןis true,אֲשֶׁרwhom you know not.שְׁלָחַנִיhe that sent me is true,וְאֹתוֹand himלֹאnotיְדַעְתֶּם׃you know.

    Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

29. 29

    וַאֲנִיBut Iיְדַעְתִּיוknow him:כִּיforמֵאִתּוֹI am from him,אָנִיIוְהוּאand heשְׁלָחָנִי׃hath sent me.

    But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

30. 30

    וַיְבַקְשׁוּThen they soughtלְתָפְשׂוֹto take him:וְאִישׁbut no manלֹא־שָׁלַחlaidיָדhandsבּוֹon him,כִּיbecauseלֹא־בָאwas not yet come.עִתּוֹ׃his hour

    Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

31. 31

    וְרַבִּיםAnd manyמִן־הָעָםof the peopleהֶאֱמִינוּbelievedבוֹon him,וַיֹּאמְרוּand said,אִם־יָבֹאWhen cometh,הַמָּשִׁיחַChristהֲַגַםwill he indeedיַעֲשֶׂהdoאֹתוֹתmiraclesהַרְבֵּהmoreמֵאֲשֶׁרthanעָשָׂהhath done?זֶה׃this man

    And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

32. 32

    וְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםThe Phariseesשָׁמְעוּheardאֶת־הָעָםthat the peopleמִתְלַחֲשִׁיםmurmuredעָלָיוsuch things concerning him;כָּזֹאתthusוַיִּשְׁלְחוּand sentהַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Phariseesוְרָאשֵׁיand the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsמְשָׁרֲתִיםofficersלְתָפְשׂוֹ׃to take him.

    The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.

33. 33

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאַךְ־מְעַטYet a little whileעוֹדֶנִּיam Iעִמָּכֶםwith you,וְהָלַכְתִּיand then I goאֶל־אֲשֶׁרuntoשְׁלָחָנִי׃him that sent me.

    Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.

34. 34

    תְּשַׁחֲרֻנְנִיYou shall seek me,וְלֹאandתִמְצָאֻנְנִיshall not find me:וּבַאֲשֶׁרand whereאֲנִיIשָׁםam,אַתֶּםyouלֹאcannotתוּכְלוּyou be able toלָבוֹא׃come.

    Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

35. 35

    וַיֹּאמְרוּThen saidהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsאִישׁoneאֶל־רֵעֵהוּamong themselves,אָנָהWhitherיֵלֵךְwill he go,זֶהthis manוַאֲנַחְנוּthat weלֹאnotנִמְצָאֵהוּshall find him?הֲיֵלֵךְwill he goאֶל־הַנְּפוֹצִיםunto the dispersedבֵּיןamongהַיְּוָנִיםthe Gentiles,וִילַמֵּדand teachאַנְשֵׁיthe men ofיָוָן׃the Gentiles?

    Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

36. 36

    מָהWhat manner ofהַדָּבָרsayingהַזֶּהis thisאֲשֶׁרthatאָמַרhe said,תְּשַׁחֲרֻנְנִיYou shall seek me,וְלֹאandתִמְצָאֻנְנִיshall not find me:וּבַאֲשֶׁרand whereאֲנִיIשָׁםam,אַתֶּםyouלֹאcannotתוּכְלוּyou be able toלָבוֹא׃come?

    What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

37. 37

    וַיְהִיInבַּיּוֹםday,הָאַחֲרוֹןthe lastהַגָּדוֹלgreatבֶּחַגof the feast,וַיַּעֲמֹדstoodיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיִּקְרָאand cried,לֵאמֹרsaying,אִישׁIf any manכִּיforיִצְמָאthirst,יָבֹא־נָאlet him comeאֵלַיunto me,וְיִשְׁתֶּה׃and drink.

    In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

38. 38

    הַמַּאֲמִיןHe that believethבִּיon me,כִּדְבַרasהַכָּתוּבthe scripture hath said,מִבִּטְנוֹout of his bellyיִנְהֲרוּshall flowנַהֲרֵיrivers ofמַיִםwater.חַיִּים׃living

    He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

39. 39

    וְזֹאתBut thisאָמַרspake heעַל־הָרוּחַof the Spirit,אֲשֶׁרwhichיִקָּחֻהוּshould receive:הַמַּאֲמִינִיםthey that believeבּוֹon himכִּיforלֹא־נִתַּןwas not yet given;רוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁthe Holy Ghostבְּטֶרֶםbecause thatנִתְפָּאֵרwas not yet glorified.יֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus

    (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

40. 40

    וְרַבִּיםManyמֵהֲמוֹןof the peopleהָעָםthe peopleכְּשׇׁמְעָםtherefore, when they heardאֶת־הַדָּבָרthis saying,הַזֶּהthisאָמְרוּsaid,אָכֵןOf a truthזֶהthisהוּאisהַנָּבִיא׃the Prophet.

    Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.

41. 41

    וְיֵשׁOthersאֲשֶׁרwhichאָמְרוּsaid,זֶהThisהוּאisהַמָּשִׁיחַthe Christ.וַאֲחֵרִיםBut someאָמְרוּsaid,הֲמִן־הַגָּלִילShall out of Galilee?יָבֹאcomeהַמָּשִׁיחַ׃Christ

    Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?

42. 42

    הֲלֹאHath notהַכָּתוּבthe scriptureאֹמֵרsaid,כִּיThatמִזֶּרַעof the seed ofדָּוִדDavid,וּמִכְּפַרand out of the town ofבֵּית־לֶחֶםBethlehem,מְקוֹםwhereדָּוִדDavid was,יֵצֵאcometh?הַמָּשִׁיחַ׃Christ

    Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

43. 43

    וַתְּהִיSo there wasמַחֲלֹקֶתa divisionבֵּיןamongהָעָםthe peopleעַל־אֹדוֹתָיו׃because of him.

    So there was a division among the people because of him.

44. 44

    וּמִקְצָתָםAnd some of themרָצוּwouldלְתָפְשׂוֹhave taken him;וְאִישׁbut no manלֹא־שָׁלַחlaidיָדhandsבּוֹ׃on him.

    And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

45. 45

    וַיָּשׁוּבוּThen cameהַמְשָׁרֲתִיםthe officersאֶל־רָאשֵׁיto the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees;וְהֵםand theyאָמְרוּsaidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,מַדּוּעַWhyלֹא־הֲבֵאתֶםhave you not broughtאֹתוֹ׃him?

    Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?

46. 46

    וַיַּעֲנוּAnswered,הַמְשָׁרֲתִיםThe officersמֵעוֹלָםNeverלֹא־דִבֶּרspakeאִישׁmanכָּאִישׁlike man.הַזֶּה׃this

    The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

47. 47

    וַיֹּאמְרוּThen answeredאֲלֵיהֶםthemהַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Pharisees,הֲכִיAreנִדַּחְתֶּםalso deceived?גַּם־אַתֶּם׃you

    Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?

48. 48

    הֲגַם־הֶאֱמִיןHave any believedבּוֹon him?אִישׁanyמִן־הַשָּׂרִיםof the rulersאוֹorמִן־הַפְּרוּשִׁים׃of the Pharisees

    Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?

49. 49

    רַקButהֶהָמוֹןpeopleהַזֶּהthisאֲשֶׁרwhoאֵינָםnotיֹדְעִיםknowethאֶת־הַתּוֹרָהthe lawאֲרוּרִיםare cursed.הֵמָּה׃they

    But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.

50. 50

    וַיֹּאמֶרSaithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,נַקְדִּימוֹןNicodemusאֲשֶׁר־בָּא(he that cameאֵלָיוto Jesusבַּלַּיְלָהby night,וְהוּאbeingהָיָהwasאֶחָדoneמֵהֶם׃of them,)

    Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)

51. 51

    הֲכִיDothתִשְׁפֹּטjudgeתּוֹרָתֵנוּour lawאִישׁany man,בְּטֶרֶםbeforeתַּחְקְרֵהוּit hear him,לָדַעַתand knowאֶת־אֲשֶׁרwhatעָשָׂה׃he doeth?

    Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?

52. 52

    וַיַּעֲנוּThey answeredוַיֹּאמְרוּand saidאֵלָיוunto him,הֲגַם־אַתָּהAre you alsoמִן־הַגָּלִילof Galilee?דְּרׇשׁ־נָאSearch,וּרְאֵהand look:כִּיforלֹא־קָםariseth noנָבִיאprophet.מִן־הַגָּלִיל׃out of Galilee

    They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

53. 53

    וַיֵּלְכוּAnd wentאִישׁevery manאִישׁa manלְבֵיתוֹ׃unto his own house.

    And every man went unto his own house.
