1. 1

   אַחַרAfterהַדְּבָרִיםthingsהָאֵלֶּהtheseהָיָהthere wasחַגa feast ofלַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews;וַיַּעַלand went upיֵשׁוּעַJesusיְרוּשָׁלָיִם׃to Jerusalem.

   After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2. 2

   וּבִירוּשָׁלַיִםNow there is at Jerusalemבְּרֵכָהa pool,עַל־יַדbyשַׁעַרthe gateהַצֹּאןsheepאֲשֶׁרwhichיִקְרְאוּis calledלָהּunto herבְּלָשׁוֹןin the tongueעִבְרִיתHebrewבֵּית־חַסְדָּאBethesda,וְלָהּhavingחֲמִשָּׁהfiveאֻלַמִּים׃porches.

   Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

   שָׁמָּהIn theseשָׁכְבוּlayחוֹלִיםof impotent folk,וְעִוְרִיםof blind,וּפִסְחִיםhalt,וִיבֵשֵׁי־כֹחַwithered,לָרֹבa great multitudeוְהֵמָּהtheyמְיַחֲלִיםwaitingלִתְנוּעַתfor the moving ofהַמָּיִם׃the water.

   In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

   כִּיForמַלְאָךְan angelיָרַדwent downבְּמוֹעֲדוֹat a certain seasonאֶל־הַבְּרֵכָהinto the pool,וַיַּרְעֵשׁand troubledאֶת־מֵימֶיהָthe water:וְהָיָהand it was thatהַיֹּרֵדwhosoever steppedרִאשׁוֹןfirstאֶל־תּוֹכָהּthereintoאַחֲרֵיafterהִתְגֹּעֲשׁוּthe troubling ofהַמַּיִםthe water,הוּאheנִרְפָּאwas made wholeמִכׇּל־מַחֲלָהof whatsoever diseaseאֲשֶׁרwhichדָּבְקָהhe had.בּוֹ׃in him

   For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

5. 5

   וְשָׁםAndאִישׁa certain manאֶחָדoneוְהוּאwas there,בְחׇלְיוֹwhich had an infirmityשְׁלשִׁיםthirtyוּשְׁמֹנֶהand eightשָׁנָה׃years.

   And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

6. 6

   וַיַּרְאWhen sawאֹתוֹhimיֵשׁוּעַJesusשֹׁכֵבlie,וַיֵּדַעand knewכִּיthatאָרְכוּ־לוֹhe had been nowיְמֵיa long timeחׇלְיוֹin that case,וַיֹּאמֶרhe saithאֵלָיוunto him,הֲתַחְפֹּץWill youלְהֵרָפֵא׃be made whole?

   When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

7. 7

   וַיַּעַןAnswered him,הַחוֹלֶהThe impotent manאֲדֹנִיSir,אֵין־אִישׁI have no man,אִתִּיwith me,לְהַשְׁלִיכֵנִיto put meאֶל־הַבְּרֵכָהinto the pool:בְּהֵרָעֵשׁwhen is troubledהַמַּיִםthe waterוּבְטֶרֶםbut whileאָבֹאI am coming,וְיָרַדsteppeth downאַחֵרanotherלְפָנָי׃before me.

   The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

8. 8

   וַיֹּאמֶרSaithאֵלָיוunto him,יֵשׁוּעַJesusקוּםRise,שָׂאtake upאֶת־מִשְׁכָּבְךָyour bed,וְהִתְהַלֵּךְ׃and walk.

   Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

9. 9

   וּכְרֶגַעAnd immediatelyשָׁבwas madeהָאִישׁthe manלְאֵיתָנוֹwhole,וַיִּשָּׂאand took upאֶת־מִשְׁכָּבוֹhis bed,וַיִּתְהַלָּךְand walked:וְהַיּוֹםand dayהַהוּאon the sameיוֹםwasהַשַּׁבָּת׃the sabbath.

   And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

10. 10

    וַיֹּאמְרוּTherefore saidהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsאֶל־הָאִישׁunto himהַנִּרְפָּאthat was cured,שַׁבָּתIt is the sabbathהַיּוֹםday:אָסוּרit is not lawfulלְךָfor youלָשֵׂאתto carryאֶת־מִשְׁכָּבֶךָ׃your bed.

    The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

11. 11

    וַיַּעַןHe answeredאֹתָםthem,לֵאמֹרsaying,הָאִישׁHe thatאֲשֶׁרwhichהֶחֱלִימַנִיmade me whole,הוּאthe sameאָמַרsaidאֵלַיunto me,שָׂאTake upאֶת־מִשְׁכָּבְךָyour bed,וְהִתְהַלֵּךְ׃and walk.

    He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

12. 12

    וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּThen asked they him,מִיWhatזֶהthisהָאִישׁmanאֲשֶׁרis that whichאָמַרsaidלְךָunto you,שָׂאTake upאֶת־מִשְׁכָּבְךָyour bed,וְהִתְהַלֵּך׃and walk?

    Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

13. 13

    וְהַנִּרְפָּאAnd he that was healedלֹאnotיָדַעwistמִיwhoהוּאit was:כִּיforסָרhad conveyed himself away,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֵּלֶךְ־לוֹand was gone,כִּיforהָיָהthere wasהָמוֹןa multitudeרַבgreatבַּמָּקוֹםin that place.הַהוּא׃that

    And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

14. 14

    וַיְהִיAfterwardאַחֲרֵי־כֵןafterwardוַיִּמְצָאֵהוּfindeth himיֵשׁוּעַJesusבְּבֵיתin the house ofהַמִּקְדָּשׁthe temple,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,הִנֵּהBehold,נִרְפָּא־לָךְyou are made whole:אַל־תּוֹסִיףno moreלַחֲטֹאsin,פֶּן־תְּאֻנֶּהlest comeאֵלֶיךָunto you.רָעָהa thingגְּדוֹלָהworseמִזֹּאת׃than this

    Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

15. 15

    וַיֵּלֶךְDepartedהָאִישׁThe man,וַיַּגֵּדand toldלַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsכִּי־יֵשׁוּעַthat it was Jesus,הוּאheאֲשֶׁרwhichרְפָאוֹ׃had made him whole.

    The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

16. 16

    וְעַל־כֵּןAnd thereforeרָדְפוּdid persecuteהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיְבַקְשׁוּand soughtהֲמִיתוֹto slay him,כִּי־עָשָׂהbecause he had doneאֵלֶּהthese thingsבַּשַּׁבָּת׃on the sabbath day.

    And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

17. 17

    וַיַּעַןBut answeredאֹתָםthem,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאָבִיMy Fatherפֹּעֵלworkethפְּעֻלָּתוֹhis workעַד־עָתָּהhitherto,וְגַם־אָנֹכִיand Iפֹּעֵל׃work.

    But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

18. 18

    אָזThereforeיוֹסִיפוּthe moreהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsלְבַקֵּשׁsoughtאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹto kill him,כִּיbecauseמִלְּבַדnot onlyאֲשֶׁרwhichחִלֵּלhe had brokenאֶת־הַשַּׁבָּתthe sabbath,גַּםbutאָמַרsaid alsoכִּיthatהָאֱלֹהִיםGodהוּאwasאָבִיוhis Father,וַיִּדַּמֶּהmaking himself equalלֵאלֹהִים׃with God.

    Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

19. 19

    וַיַּעַןThen answeredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אָמֵןVerily,אָמֵןverily,אֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,לֹא־יוּכַלcanהַבֵּןThe Sonלַעֲשׂוֹתdoדָּבָרnothingמִנַּפְשׁוֹof himself,בִּלְתִּיbutאֵת־אֲשֶׁר־יִרְאֶהwhat he seethאֶת־אָבִיוthe Fatherעֹשֶׂהdo:כִּיforאֶת־אֲשֶׁרwhat things soeverעֹשֶׂהhe doeth,הוּאheגַּם־הַבֵּןthese also the Sonיַעֲשֶׂהdoethכָּמֹהוּ׃likewise.

    Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

20. 20

    כִּיForהָאָבthe Fatherאֹהֵבlovethאֶת־הַבֵּןthe Son,וּמוֹרֶהand shewethאֹתוֹhimכֹּלall thingsאֲשֶׁרthatיַעֲשֶׂהhimself doeth:וְעוֹדandמַעֲשִׂיםworksגְּדוֹלִיםgreaterמֵאֵלֶּהthan these,יוֹרֵהוּhe will shew him,לְמַעַןthatתִּתַּמָּהוּ׃you may marvel.

    For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

21. 21

    כִּיForכַּאֲשֶׁרasהָאָבthe Fatherיָעִירraiseth upוְיחַיֶּהand quickenethאֶת־הַמֵּתִיםthe dead;כֵּןeven soגַּם־הַבֵּןthe Sonיְחַיֶּהquickenethאֶת־אֲשֶׁרwhomיֶחְפָּץ׃he will.

    For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

22. 22

    כִּיForהָאָבthe Fatherלֹא־יָדִיןjudgeth noאִישׁman,כִּיbutאִם־נָתַןbut hath committedהַמִּשְׁפָּטjudgmentכֻּלּוֹallבְּיַדuntoהַבֵּןthe Son:לְמַעַןThatיְכַבְּדוּshould honorכֻלָּםall menאֶת־הַבֵּןthe Son,כַּאֲשֶׁרeven asיְכַבְּדוּthey honorאֶת־הָאָב׃the Father.

    For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

23. 23

    מִיHeאֲשֶׁרthatלֹא־יְכַבֵּדhonoreth notאֶת־הַבֵּןthe Sonגַּםalsoאֶת־הָאָבthe Fatherאֲשֶׁרwhichשְׁלָחוֹhath sent him.אֵינֶנּוּnotמְכַבֵּד׃honoreth

    That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

24. 24

    אָמֵןVerily,אָמֵןverily,אֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,הַשֹּׁמֵעַHe that hearethדְּבָרַיmy word,וּמַאֲמִיןand believethלְשֹׁלְחִיon him that sent me,יֶשׁ־לוֹhathחַיֵּיlife,עוֹלָםeverlastingוְלֹאand shall notיָבֹאcomeבַּמִּשְׁפָּטinto condemnation;כִּי־עָבַרbut is passedמִמָּוֶתfrom deathלַחַיִּים׃unto life.

    Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

25. 25

    אָמֵןVerily,אָמֵןverily,אֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,כִּי־תָבוֹאis coming,שָׁעָהThe hourוְעַתָּהand nowהִיאis,אֲשֶׁרwhenיִשְׁמְעוּshall hearהַמֵּתִיםthe deadאֶת־קוֹלthe voice ofבֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe Son of God:וְהַשֹּׁמְעִיםand they that hearחָיֹהsurelyיִחְיוּ׃shall live.

    Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

26. 26

    כִּיForכַּאֲשֶׁרasלָאָבthe Fatherיֵשׁhathחַיִּיםlifeבְּעַצְמוֹin himself;כֵּןsoנָתַןhath he givenגַּם־לַבֵּןto the Sonלִהְיוֹת־לוֹto haveחַיִּיםlifeבְּעַצְמוֹ׃in himself;

    For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

27. 27

    וְאַף־שָׁלְטָןAnd authority alsoנָתַןhath he givenלוֹunto himלַעֲשׂוֹתto executeמִשְׁפָּטjudgmentכִּיalso, becauseבֶּן־אָדָםthe Son of man.הוּא׃he is

    And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

28. 28

    אַל־תִּתְמְהוּMarvel notעַל־זֹאתat this:כִּיforהִנֵּהbehold,בָּאָהis coming,שָׁעָהthe hourוְיִשְׁמְעוּin the which shall hearכׇּל־שֹׁכְנֵיall that are inקֶבֶרthe gravesאֶת־קוֹלוֹ׃his voice,

    Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

29. 29

    וְעָלוּAnd shall come forth;עֹשֵׂיthey that have doneהַטּוֹבgood,לָקוּםunto the resurrectionלַחַיִּיםof life;וְעֹשֵׂיand they that have doneהָרַעevil,לָקוּםunto the resurrectionלַדִּין׃of damnation.

    And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

30. 30

    לֹאnotאוּכַלI canלַעֲשׂוֹתdoדָּבָרa thing:מִנַּפְשִׁיof mine own selfכַּאֲשֶׁרasאֶשְׁמַעI hear,כֵּןthusאֶשְׁפֹּטI judge:וּמִשְׁפָּטִיand my judgmentצֶדֶקis just;כִּיbecauseלֹאnotאֲבַקֵּשׁI seekרְצוֹנִיmine own will,כִּיbutאִםratherרְצוֹןthe will ofהָאָבthe Fatherאֲשֶׁרwhichשְׁלָחָנִי׃hath sent me.

    I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

31. 31

    אִם־אָנֹכִיIf Iמֵעִידbear witnessעָלָיof myself,עֵדוּתִיmy witnessלֹאis notנֶאֱמָנָה׃true.

    If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

32. 32

    יֵשׁThere isאַחֵרanotherהַמֵּעִידthat beareth witnessעָלָיof me;וְיָדַעְתִּיand I knowכִּיthatנֶאֱמָנָהis trueעֵדוּתוֹthe witnessאֲשֶׁר־הוּאwhich heמֵעִידwitnessethעָלָי׃of me.

    There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

33. 33

    אַתֶּםYouשְׁלַחְתֶּםsentאֶל־יוֹחָנָןunto John,וְהוּאand heהֵעִידbare witnessעֵדוּתa witness ofאֱמֶת׃truth.

    Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

34. 34

    וַאֲנִיBut Iלֹאnotאֶקַּחreceiveלִיfor myselfעֵדוּתtestimonyמֵאָדָםfrom man:אַךְbutאָמַרְתִּיthese things I say,זֹאתthisלְמַעַןthatתִּוָּשֵׁעוּן׃you might be saved.

    But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

35. 35

    הוּאHeהָיָהwasהַנֵּרaהַדֹּלֵקburningוְהַמֵּאִירand a shining light:וְאַתֶּםand youרְצִיתֶםwere willingלָשׂוֹשׂto rejoiceכְּשָׁעָהfor a seasonלְאוֹרוֹ׃in his light.

    He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

36. 36

    וְלִיBut I haveעֵדוּתwitnessגְּדוֹלָהgreaterמֵעֵדוּתthan that ofיוֹחָנָןJohn:הַמַּעֲשִׂיםfor the worksאֲשֶׁרwhichנָתַן־לִיhath given meאָבִיthe Fatherלְהַשְׁלִימָםto finish,הַמַּעֲשִׂיםthe same worksהָאֵלֶּהtheseאֲשֶׁר־אֲנִיthat Iעֹשֶׂהdo,מְעִידִיםbear witnessעָלַיof me,כִּיthatהָאָבthe Fatherשְׁלָחָנִי׃hath sent me.

    But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

37. 37

    וְהָאָבAnd the Fatherאֲשֶׁרwhichשְׁלָחַנִיhimself, which hath sent me,הוּאheמֵעִידhath borne witnessעָלָיof me.וְאַתֶּםYouאֶת־קוֹלוֹhis voiceלֹא־שְׁמַעְתֶּםhave neither heardמֵעוֹלָםat any time,וּתְמוּנָתוֹnor his shapeלֹאnotרְאִיתֶם׃seen.

    And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

38. 38

    וּדְבָרוֹAnd his wordאֵינֶנּוּyou have notשֹׁכֵןabidingבְּקִרְבְּכֶםin you:כִּיforאֵינְכֶםyouמַאֲמִינִיםbelieve not.לִשְׁלוּחוֹ׃whom he hath sent,

    And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

39. 39

    דִּרְשׁוּSearchבַכְּתָבִיםthe scriptures;אֲשֶׁרforתֹּאמְרוּyou thinkשֶׁיֵּשׁyou haveלָכֶםunto youחַיֵּיlife:עוֹלָםeternalבָּהֶםin themוְהֵמָּהand theyהַמְּעִידִיםare they which testifyעָלָי׃of me.

    Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

40. 40

    וְאַתֶּםAnd youאֵינְכֶםare notרוֹצִיםwilling toלָבוֹאcomeאֵלָיto me,לִהְיוֹתthat you might haveלָכֶםunto youחַיִּים׃life.

    And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

41. 41

    לֹא־אֶקַּחI receive notכָּבוֹדhonorמִבְּנֵיfromאָדָם׃men.

    I receive not honour from men.

42. 42

    אָכֵןButיָדַעְתִּיI knowאֶתְכֶםyou,כִּיthatאֵין־אַהֲבַתyou have not the love ofאֱלֹהִיםGodבְּקִרְבְּכֶם׃in you.

    But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

43. 43

    אֲנִיIהִנֵּהbehold,בָאתִיam comeבְּשֵׁםin name,אָבִיmy Father'sלֹאnotקִבַּלְתֶּםyou receiveאֹתִיmeוְאִם־יָבֹאif shall comeאַחֵרanotherבְּשֵׁםin name,עַצְמוֹhis ownאֹתוֹhimתְקַבֵּלוּ׃you will receive.

    I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

44. 44

    אֵיךְHowתּוּכְלוּcanלְהַאֲמִיןyou believe,אַתֶּםyouהַלֹּקְחִיםwhich receiveכָּבוֹדhonorאִישׁoneמֵאֵתofרֵעֵהוּanother,וְאֶת־הַכָּבוֹדand the honorאֲשֶׁרthatמֵאֵת־הָאֱלֹהִיםcometh from Godהַיָּחִידonly,לֹאnotתְּבַקֵּשׁוּ׃seek?

    How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

45. 45

    אַל־תַּחְשְׁבוּDo not thinkכִּיthatאָנֹכִיIאֶטְעֹןwill accuseעֲלֵיכֶםyouלִפְנֵיtoאָבִיthe Father:משֶׁהeven Moses,אֲשֶׁר־לוֹin whomתְיַחֵלוּyou trust.הוּאhe isהַטֹּעֵןthe one that accusethעֲלֵיכֶם׃you,

    Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

46. 46

    כִּיForלוּhadתַאֲמִינוּhad you believedלְמשֶׁהMoses,גַּם־לִיme:תַאֲמִינוּyou would have believedכִּיforהוּאheכָּתַבwroteעָלָי׃of me.

    For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.

47. 47

    וְאִם־לִכְתָבָיוBut if his writingsאֵינְכֶםnotמַאֲמִינִיםyou believe,אֵיךְhowתַאֲמִינוּshall you believeלִדְבָרָי׃my words?

    But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
