   There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

   The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

   Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

   Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

   Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

   That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

   אַל־תִּתְמַהּal-tit/MAdo not marvelעַל־אׇמְרִיal-om/RIat my sayingלָךְlakhto youכִּיkithatעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMit is on youלְהִוָּלֵדle/hiv/va/LEDbe bornשֵׁנִית׃she/NITagain

   Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

   The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

   Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

    וַיַּעַןvay/YA/anand answeredיֵשׁוּעַYe/SHU/aJesusוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himרַבrava teacherבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלbe/Yis/ra/ELin Israelאַתָּהat/TAare youוְזֹאתve/ZOTand thisלֹאlonotיָדָעְתָּ׃ya/DA/tayou know

    Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

    אָמֵןa/MENamenאָמֵןa/MENamenאֲנִיa/NIIאֹמֵרo/MERsayלָךְlakhto youכִּיkithatאֵת־אֲשֶׁר־יָדַעְנוּet-a/SHER-ya/DA/nuwhat we knowנְדַבֵּרne/dab/BERwe speakוְאֵתve/ETandאֲשֶׁר־רָאִינוּa/SHER-ra/I/nuwhat we have seenנָעִידna/IDtestifyוְאַתֶּםve/at/TEMand youלֹאlonotתְקַבְּלוּte/kab/be/LUreceiveעֵדוּתֵנוּ׃e/du/te/NUour testimony

    Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

    אִםimifהִגַּדְתִּיhig/GAD/tiI have toldלָכֶםla/KHEMyouעִנְיְנֵיin/ye/NEthe matters ofהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe earthוְאֵינְכֶםve/e/ne/KHEMand you do notמַאֲמִינִיםma/a/mi/NIMbelieveאֵיךְekhhowתַּאֲמִינוּta/a/MI/nuwill you believeבְּהַגִּידִיbe/hag/GI/diwhen I tellלָכֶםla/KHEMyouעִנְיְנֵיin/ye/NEthe matters ofהַשָּׁמָיִם׃hash/sha/MA/yimheaven

    If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

13. 13

    וְאִישׁve/ISHand a manלֹא־עָלָהlo-a/LAhas not gone upהַשָּׁמַיְמָהhash/sha/MAY/mato heavenבִּלְתִּיbil/TIexceptאִם־אֲשֶׁרim-a/SHERhe whoיָרַדya/RADcame downמִן־הַשָּׁמָיִםmin-hash/sha/MA/yimfrom heavenבֶּן־הָאָדָםben-Ha/a/DAMthe Son of manאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהוּאhuisבַּשָּׁמָיִם׃bash/sha/MA/yimin heaven

    And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

14. 14

    וְכַאֲשֶׁרve/kha/a/SHERand asהִגְבִּיהַּhig/BI/ahlifted upמֹשֶׁהMo/SHEMosesאֶת־הַנָּחָשׁet-han/na/CHASHthe serpentבַּמִּדְבָּרbam/mid/BARin the wildernessכֵּןkensoצָרִיךְtsa/RIKHmustבֶּן־הָאָדָםben-Ha/a/DAMthe Son of manלְהִנָּשֵׂא׃le/hin/na/SEbe lifted up

    And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

15. 15

    לְמַעַןle/MA/anso thatאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹאlonotיֹאבַדyo/VADwill perishכׇּל־הַמַּאֲמִיןkol-ham/ma/a/MINanyone who believesבּוֹboin himכִּיkibutאִםimonlyיִהְיוּ־לוֹyih/YU-lohe shall haveחַיֵּיchay/YEthe life ofעוֹלָם׃o/LAMeternity

    That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16. 16

    כִּי־אַהֲבָהki-a/ha/VAfor with a loveרַבָּהrab/BAgreatאָהַבa/HAVlovedהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodאֶת־הָעוֹלָםet-ha/o/LAMthe worldעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERuntilנָתַןna/TANHe gaveאֶת־בְּנוֹet-Be/NOHis Sonאֶת־יְחִידוֹet-ye/chi/DOHis only begottenלְמַעַןle/MA/anso thatאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹא־יֹאבַדlo-yo/VADwill not perishכׇּל־הַמַּאֲמִיןkol-ham/ma/a/MINanyone who believesבּוֹboin himכִּיkibutאִם־יִהְיוּ־לוֹim-yih/YU-lobut he shall haveחַיֵּיchay/YEthe life ofעוֹלָם׃o/LAMeternity

    For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17. 17

    כִּיkiforהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodלֹא־שָׁלַחlo-sha/LACHdid not sendאֶת־בְּנוֹet-Be/NOHis Sonבָּעוֹלָםba/o/LAMinto the worldלָדִיןla/DINto condemnאֶת־הָעוֹלָםet-ha/o/LAMthe worldכִּיkibutאִם־לְמַעַןim-le/MA/anonly so thatיִוָּשַׁעyiv/va/SHAmay be savedבּוֹbothrough himהָעוֹלָם׃ha/o/LAMthe world

    For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18. 18

    הַמַּאֲמִיןham/ma/a/MINwhoever believesבּוֹboin himלֹאlonotיִדּוֹןyid/DONis condemnedוַאֲשֶׁרva/a/SHERand whoeverלֹא־יַאֲמִיןlo-ya/a/MINdoes not believeבּוֹboin himכְּבָרke/VARalreadyנָדוֹןna/DONis condemnedכִּיkibecauseלֹא־הֶאֱמִיןlo-he/e/MINhe has not believedבְּשֵׁםbe/SHEMin the name ofבֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִיםben-Ha/e/lo/HIMthe Son of Godהַיָּחִיד׃hay/ya/CHIDthe only begotten

    He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19. 19

    וְזֶהve/ZEand thisהוּאhuisהַדִּיןhad/DINthe condemnationכִּיkithatהָאוֹרha/ORthe lightבָּאbahas comeאֶל־הָעוֹלָםel-ha/o/LAMinto the worldוּבְנֵיu/ve/NEand the sons ofהָאָדָםha/a/DAMmenאָהֲבוּA/ha/vulovedהַחֹשֶׁךְha/CHO/shekhthe darknessיוֹתֵרyo/TERmoreמִן־הָאוֹרmin-ha/ORthan the lightכִּיkibecauseרָעִיםra/IMevilמַעֲשֵׂיהֶם׃ma/a/se/HEMtheir deeds

    And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20. 20

    כִּיkiforכׇל־פֹּעֵלkhol-po/ELeveryone who worksעַוְלָהav/LAunrighteousnessשֹׂנֵאso/NEhatesאֶת־הָאוֹרet-ha/ORthe lightוְלֹאve/LOand notיָבֹאya/VOdoes comeלָאוֹרla/ORto the lightפֶּן־יִוָּכַחpen-yiv/va/KHACHlest be exposedעַל־מַעֲשָׂיו׃al-ma/a/SAYVhis deeds

    For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21. 21

    אֲבָלa/VALbutעֹשֵׂהo/SEthe doer ofהָאֱמֶתha/e/METtruthיָבֹאya/VOcomesלָאוֹרla/ORto the lightלְמַעַןle/MA/anso thatיִגָּלוּyig/ga/LUmay be revealedמַעֲשָׂיוma/a/SAYVhis deedsכִּיkithatנַעֲשׂוּna/a/SUwere doneבֵּאלֹהִים׃be/lo/HIMin God

    But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

22. 22

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterהַדְּבָרִיםhad/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameיֵשׁוּעַYe/SHU/aJesusוְתַלְמִידָיוve/tal/mi/DAYVand his disciplesאֶל־אֶרֶץel-E/retsinto the land ofיְהוּדָהYe/hu/DAJudaeaוַיֵּשֶׁב־שָׁםvay/YE/shev-shamand he stayed thereעִמָּהֶםim/ma/HEMwith themוַיִּטְבֹּל׃vay/yit/BOLand he baptized

    After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judæa; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

23. 23

    וְגַםve/GAMand alsoיוֹחָנָןYo/cha/NANJohnהָיָהha/YAwasטֹבֵלto/VELbaptizingבְּעֵינוֹןbe/E/NONin Aenonקָרוֹבka/ROVnearלְשָׁלֵםLe/sha/LEMSalimכִּי־שָׁםki-shamfor thereהָיוּha/YUwereמַיִםMA/yimwaterלָרֹבla/ROVin abundanceוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameוַיִּטָּבֵלוּ׃vay/yit/ta/ve/LUand were baptized

    And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

24. 24

    כִּיkiforעוֹדodstillלֹא־נִתַּןlo-nit/TANhad not been putיוֹחָנָןYo/cha/NANJohnאֶל־בֵּיתel-betinto the house ofהַסֹּהַר׃has/SO/harthe prison

    For John was not yet cast into prison.

25. 25

    וַתְּהִיvat/te/HIand there wasמַחֲלֹקֶתma/cha/LO/keta disputeבֵּיןbenbetweenתַּלְמִידֵיtal/mi/DEthe disciples ofיוֹחָנָןYo/cha/NANJohnוּבֵיןu/VENand betweenהַיְּהוּדִיםhay/Ye/hu/DIMthe Jewsעַל־דְּבַרal-de/VARaboutהַטׇּהֳרָה׃hat/to/ho/RAthe purification

    Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.

    וַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameאֶל־יוֹחָנָןel-Yo/cha/NANto Johnוַיֹּאמְרוּvay/yo/me/RUand they saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himרַבִּיrab/BIrabbiהָאִישׁha/ISHthe manאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהָיָהha/YAwasעִמְּךָim/me/KHAwith youבְּעֵבֶרbe/E/verbeyondהַיַּרְדֵּןhay/Yar/DENthe Jordanוַאֲשֶׁרva/a/SHERand whomהַעִידֹתָha/i/DO/tayou testifiedלּוֹloto himהִנּוֹhin/NObehold heטֹבֵלto/VELbaptizesוְכֻלָּםve/khul/LAMand all of themבָּאִיםba/IMare comingאֵלָיו׃e/LAYVto him

    And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

27. 27

    וַיַּעַןvay/YA/anand answeredיוֹחָנָןYo/cha/NANJohnוַיֹּאמַרvay/yo/MARand saidלֹא־יוּכַלlo-yu/KHALcannotאִישׁisha manלָקַחַתla/KA/chatto takeדָּבָרda/VARa thingבִּלְתִּיbil/TIexceptאִם־נִתַּן־לוֹim-nit/TAN-loif it is given to himמִן־הַשָּׁמָיִם׃min-hash/sha/MA/yimfrom heaven

    John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.

28. 28

    וְאַתֶּםve/at/TEMand youעֵדַיe/DAYare my witnessesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatאָמַרְתִּיa/MAR/tiI saidאֵינֶנִּיe/NEN/niI am notהַמָּשִׁיחַham/Ma/SHI/achthe Messiahרַק־שָׁלוּחַrak-sha/LU/achonly sentאֲנִיa/NIam Iלְפָנָיו׃le/fa/NAYVbefore him

    Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

29. 29

    אֲשֶׁר־לוֹa/SHER-lowhoever hasהַכַּלָּהhak/kal/LAthe brideהוּאhuisהֶחָתָןhe/cha/TANthe bridegroomוְרֵעַve/RE/aand the friend ofהֶחָתָןhe/cha/TANthe bridegroomהָעֹמֵדha/o/MEDwho standsוְשֹׁמֵעַve/sho/ME/aand hearsאֹתוֹo/TOhimשָׂמוֹחַsa/MO/achrejoiceיִשְׂמַחyis/MACHhe rejoicesלְקוֹלle/KOLat the voice ofהֶחָתָןhe/cha/TANthe bridegroomהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdשִׂמְחָתִיsim/cha/TImy joyזֹאתzotthisעַתָּהat/TAnowשְׁלֵמָה׃she/le/MAis complete

    He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

30. 30

    הוּאhuheיִגְדַּלyig/DALwill growהָלוֹךְha/LOKHgoingוְגָדֵלve/ga/DELand growingוַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iאֶחְסַרech/SARwill lessenהָלוֹךְha/LOKHgoingוְחָסוֹר׃ve/cha/SORand lessening

    He must increase, but I must decrease.

31. 31

    הַבָּאhab/BAwho comesמִמַּעַלmim/MA/alfrom aboveנַעֲלֶהna/a/LEis exaltedעַל־כֹּלal-kolabove allוַאֲשֶׁרva/a/SHERand whoeverמֵאֶרֶץme/E/retsis from the earthמֵאֶרֶץme/E/retsfrom the earthהוּאhuis heוּמֵאֶרֶץu/me/E/retsand from the earthיְדַבֵּרye/dab/BERspeaksהַבָּאhab/BAwho comesמִשָּׁמַיִםmish/sha/MA/yimfrom heavenנַעֲלֶהna/a/LEis exaltedעַל־כֹּל׃al-kolabove all

    He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

32. 32

    וְאֵתve/ETandאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhatרָאָהra/Ahe has seenוְשָׁמַעve/sha/MAand heardאֹתוֹo/TOitיָעִידya/IDhe testifiesוְאֵיןve/ENand there is no oneמְקַבֵּלme/kab/BELreceivingעֵדוּתוֹ׃e/du/TOhis testimony

    And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.

33. 33

    וַאֲשֶׁרva/a/SHERand whoeverקִבֵּלkib/BELhas receivedעֵדוּתוֹe/du/TOhis testimonyהוּאhuheחָתוֹםcha/TOMsealחָתַםcha/TAMhas sealedכִּיkithatהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodאֱמֶת׃e/METis true

    He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.

34. 34

    כִּיkiforאֲשֶׁרa/SHERhe whomשְׁלָחוֹshe/la/CHOsent himאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodהוּאhuheיְדַבֵּרye/dab/BERspeaksדִּבְרֵיdiv/REthe words ofאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodכִּי־לֹאki-lofor notבַמִּדָּהvam/mid/DAby measureנֹתֵןno/TENdoes giveאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodאֶת־הָרוּחַ׃et-Ha/RU/achthe Spirit

    For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

35. 35

    הָאָבha/AVthe Fatherאֹהֵבo/HEVlovesאֶת־בְּנוֹet-Be/NOHis Sonוְאֶת־כֹּלve/ET-koland allנָתַןna/TANhas givenבְּיָדוֹ׃be/ya/DOinto his hand

    The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

36. 36

    כׇּל־הַמַּאֲמִיןkol-ham/ma/a/MINwhoever believesבַּבֵּןbab/BENin the Sonיֶשׁ־לוֹyesh-lohasחַיֵּיchay/YEthe life ofעוֹלָםo/LAMeternityוַאֲשֶׁרva/a/SHERand whoeverלֹאlonotיַאֲמִיןya/a/MINbelievesבַּבֵּןbab/BENin the Sonלֹאlonotיִרְאֶהyir/Ewill he seeחַיִּיםchay/YIMlifeכִּיkibutאִםimonlyחֲרוֹןcha/RONthe burning ofאַףafthe anger ofאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodיִשְׁכֹּןyish/KONabidesעָלָיו׃a/LAYVon him

    He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
