1. 1

   וּבַפְּרוּשִׁיםThere was a man of the Pharisees,אִישׁa manנַקְדִּימוֹןNicodemusשְׁמוֹnamed,קְצִיןa ruler ofהַיְּהוּדִים׃the Jews:

   There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

2. 2

   וַיָּבֹאThe same cameאֶל־יֵשׁוּעַto Jesusלַיְלָהby night,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,רַבִּיRabbi,יָדַעְנוּwe knowכִּיthatאַתָּהyou areמוֹרֶהa teacherמֵאֵתcome fromאֱלֹהִיםGod:בָּאתָyou are come:כִּיforלֹא־יוּכַלnoאִישׁmanלַעֲשׂוֹתcan doהָאֹתוֹתmiraclesאֲשֶׁרthatאַתָּהyouעֹשֶׂהdoest,בִּלְתִּיexceptאִם־הָאֱלֹהִיםGodעִמּוֹ׃be with him.

   The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

   וַיַּעַןAnsweredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,אָמֵןVerily,אָמֵןverily,אֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָךְunto you,אִם־לֹאExceptיִוָּלֵדbe bornאִישׁa manמִלְמַעְלָהagain,לֹא־יוּכַלhe cannotלִרְאוֹתseeאֶת־מַלְכוּתthe kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

   Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4. 4

   וַיֹּאמֶרSaithאֵלָיוunto him,נַקְדִּימוֹןNicodemusאֵיךְHowיִוָּלֵדcan be bornאָדָםa manוְהוּאwhen heזָקֵןis old?הֲיוּכַלcan heלָשׁוּבenterאֶל־בֶּטֶןthe wombאִמּוֹof his mother'sוְיִוָּלֵד׃and be born?

   Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

   וַיַּעַןAnswered,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאָמֵןVerily,אָמֵןverily,אֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָךְunto you,אִם־לֹאExceptיִוָּלֵדbe bornאִישׁa manמִן־הַמַּיִםof waterוְהָרוּחַand of the Spirit,לֹא־יוּכַלhe cannotלָבוֹאenterאֶל־מַלְכוּתinto the kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

   Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

   הַנּוֹלָדThat which is bornמִן־הַבָּשָׂרof the fleshבָּשָׂרflesh;הוּאisוְהַנּוֹלָדand that which is bornמִן־הָרוּחַof the Spiritרוּחַspirit.הוּא׃is

   That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7. 7

   אַל־תִּתְמַהּMarvel notעַל־אָמְריthat I saidלָךְunto you,כִּיthatעֲלֵיכֶםYou mustלְהִוָּלֵדbe bornמִלְמָעְלָה׃again.

   Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

8. 8

   הָרוּחַThe windבַּאֲשֶׁרwhereיַחְפֹּץit listeth,שָׁםthereהוּאheנשֵׁבblowethוְאַתָּהand youתִּשְׁמַעhearestאֶת־קוֹלוֹthe sound thereof,וְלֹאbutתֵדַעcanst not tellמֵאַיִןwhenceבָּאit cometh,וְאָנָהand whitherהוּאitהוֹלֵךְgoeth:כֵּןso isכׇּל־הַנּוֹלָדevery one that is bornמִן־הָרוּחַ׃of the Spirit.

   The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

9. 9

   וַיַּעַןAnsweredנַקְדִּימוֹןNicodemusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,אֵיכָהHowתִהְיֶהcan be?כָּזֹאת׃these things

   Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

10. 10

    וַיַּעַןAnsweredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,רַבAre you a masterבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלof Israel,אַתָּהyouוְזֹאתand notלֹאnotיָדָעְתָּ׃knowest these things?

    Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

11. 11

    אָמֵןVerily,אָמֵןverily,אֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָךְunto you,כִּיthatאֵת־אֲשֶׁר־יָדַעְנוּthat we do know,נְדַבֵּרWe speakוְאֵתandאֲשֶׁר־רָאִינוּthat we have seen,נָעִידtestifyוְאַתֶּםand youלֹאnotתְקַבְּלוּreceiveעֵדוּתֵנוּ׃our witness.

    Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

12. 12

    אִםIfהִגַּדְתִּיI have toldלָכֶםyouעִנְיְנֵיofהָאָרֶץearthly things,וְאֵינְכֶםand youמַאֲמִינִיםbelieve not,אֵיךְhowתַּאֲמִינוּshall you believe,בְּהַגִּידִיif I tellלָכֶםyouעִנְיְנֵיofהַשָּׁמָיִם׃heavenly things?

    If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

13. 13

    וְאִישׁAnd no manלֹא־עָלָהhath ascended upהַשָּׁמַיְמָהto heaven,בִּלְתִּיbutאִם־אֲשֶׁרhe thatיָרַדcame downמִן־הַשָּׁמָיִםfrom heaven,בֶּן־הָאָדָםeven the Son of manאֲשֶׁרwhichהוּאisבַּשָּׁמָיִם׃in heaven.

    And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

14. 14

    וְכַאֲשֶׁרAnd asהִגְבִּיהַּlifted upמשֶׁהMosesאֶת־הַנָּחָשׁthe serpentבַּמִּדְבָּרin the wilderness,כֵּןeven soצָרִיךְmustבֶּן־הָאָדָםthe Son of manלְהִנָּשֵׂא׃be lifted up:

    And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

15. 15

    לְמַעַןThatאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹאshould notיֹאבַדperish,כׇּל־הַמַּאֲמִיןwhosoever believethבּוֹin himכִּיbutאִםratherיִחְיֶהhaveחַיֵּיlifeעוֹלָם׃eternal.

    That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16. 16

    כִּי־אַהֲבָהFor with loveרַבָּהso greatאָהַבlovedהָאֱלֹהִיםGodאֶת־הָעוֹלָםthe world,עַד־אֲשֶׁרthatנָתַןhe gaveאֶת־בְּנוֹhis Son,אֶת־יְחִידוֹonly begottenלְמַעַןthatאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־יֹאבַדshould not perish,כׇּל־הַמַּאֲמִיןwhosoever believethבּוֹin himכִּיbutאִם־יִחְיֶהhaveחַיֵּיlifeעוֹלָם׃everlasting.

    For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17. 17

    כִּיForהָאֱלֹהִיםGodלֹא־שָׁלַחsent notאֶת־בְּנוֹhis Sonבָּעוֹלָםinto the worldלָדִיןto condemnאֶת־הָעוֹלָםthe world;כִּיbutאִם־לְמַעַןthatיִוָּשַׁעmight be savedבּוֹthrough him.הָעוֹלָם׃the world

    For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18. 18

    הַמַּאֲמִיןHe that believethבּוֹon himלֹאnotיִדּוֹןis condemned:וַאֲשֶׁרbut he thatלֹא־יַאֲמִיןbelieveth notבּוֹin himכְּבָרalready,נָדוֹןis condemnedכִּיbecauseלֹא־הֶאֱמִיןhe hath not believedבְּשֵׁםin the name ofבֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe Son of God.הַיָּחִיד׃only begotten

    He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19. 19

    וְזֶהAnd thisהוּאisהַדִּיןthe condemnation,כִּיthatהָאוֹרlightבָּאis comeאֶל־הָעוֹלָםinto the world,וּבְנֵיand the sons ofהָאָדָםmenאָהֲבוּlovedהַחֹשֶׁךְdarknessיוֹתֵרratherמִן־הָאוֹרthan light,כִּיbecauseרָעִיםwere evil.מַעֲשֵׁיהֶם׃their deeds

    And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20. 20

    כִּיForכׇל־פֹּעֵלevery one that doethעַוְלָהevilשֹׂנֵאhatethאֶת־הָאוֹרthe light,וְלֹאneitherיָבֹאcomethלָאוֹרto the light,פֶּן־יִוָּכַחlest should be reproved.עַל־מַעֲשָׂיו׃his deeds

    For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21. 21

    אֲבָלButעֹשֵׂהhe that doethהָאֱמֶתtruthיָבֹאcomethלָאוֹרto the light,לְמַעַןthatיִגָּלוּmay be made manifest,מַעֲשָׂיוhis deedsכִּיthatנַעֲשׂוּthey are wroughtבֵּאלֹהִים׃in God.

    But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

22. 22

    וַיְהִיAndאַחֲרֵיafterהַדְּבָרִיםthings,הָאֵלֶּהtheseוַיָּבֹאcameיֵשׁוּעַJesusוְתַלְמִידָיוand his disciplesאֶל־אֶרֶץinto the land ofיְהוּדָהJudaea;וַיֵּשֶׁב־שָׁםand there he tarriedעִמָּהֶםwith them,וַיִּטְבֹּל׃and baptized.

    After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judæa; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

23. 23

    וְגַםAndיוֹחָנָןJohnהָיָהalso wasטֹבֵלbaptizingבְּעֵינוֹןin Aenonקָרוֹבnear toלְשָׁלֵםSalim,כִּי־שָׁםbecause thereהָיוּwasמַיִםwaterלָרֹבmuchוַיָּבֹאוּand they came,וַיִּטָּבֵלוּ׃and were baptized.

    And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

24. 24

    כִּיForעוֹדyetלֹא־נִתַּןnot was castיוֹחָנָןJohnאֶל־בֵּיתinto the house ofהַסֹּהַר׃prison.

    For John was not yet cast into prison.

25. 25

    וַתְּהִיThen there aroseמַחֲלֹקֶתa questionבֵּיןbetweenתַּלְמִידֵיdisciples ofיוֹחָנָןJohn'sוּבֵיןandיְהוּדִיthe Jewsעַל־דְּבַרaboutהַטׇּהֳרָה׃purifying.

    Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.

26. 26

    וַיָּבֹאוּAnd they cameאֶל־יוֹחָנָןunto John,וַיֹּאמְרוּand saidאֵלָיוunto him,רַבִּיRabbi,הָאִישׁhe that wasאֲשֶׁרwhichהָיָהwasעִמְּךָwith youבְּעֵבֶרbeyondהַיַּרְדֵּןJordan,וַאֲשֶׁרto whomהַעִידֹתָyou barest witness,לּוֹto him,הִנּוֹbehold, the sameטֹבֵלbaptizeth,וְכֻלָּםand all menבָּאִיםcomeאֵלָיו׃to him.

    And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

27. 27

    וַיַּעַןAnsweredיוֹחָנָןJohnוַיֹּאמַרand said,לֹא־יוּכַלcannotאִישׁA manלָקַחַתreceiveדָּבָרnothing,בִּלְתִּיexceptאִם־נִתַּן־לוֹit be given himמִן־הַשָּׁמָיִם׃from heaven.

    John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.

28. 28

    וְאַתֶּםYou yourselvesעֵדַיbear me witness,אֲשֶׁרthatאָמַרְתִּיI said,אֵינֶנִּיI am notהַמָּשִׁיחַthe Christ,רַק־שָׁלוּחַbut that I am sentאֲנִיIלְפָנָיו׃before him.

    Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

29. 29

    אֲשֶׁר־לוֹHe that hathהַכַּלָּהthe brideהוּאisהֶחָתָןthe bridegroom:וְרֵעַbut the friend ofהֶחָתָןthe bridegroom,הָעֹמֵדwhich standethוְשֹׁמֵעַand hearethאֹתוֹhim,שָׂמוֹחַgreatlyיִשְׂמַחrejoicethלְקוֹלbecause of the voice ofהֶחָתָןthe bridegroom:הִנֵּהbeholdשִׂמְחָתִיthis my joyזֹאתthisעַתָּהthereforeשְׁלֵמָה׃is fulfilled.

    He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

30. 30

    הוּאHeיִגְדַּלmustהָלוֹךְincrease,וְגָדֵלand increase,וַאֲנִיbut Iאֶחְסַרmustהָלוֹךְdecrease.וְחָסוֹר׃and decrease.

    He must increase, but I must decrease.

31. 31

    הַבָּאHe that comethמִמַּעַלfrom aboveנַעֲלֶהis aboveעַל־כֹּלall:וַאֲשֶׁרhe that isמֵאֶרֶץof the earthמֵאֶרֶץis earthly,הוּאheוּמֵאֶרֶץand of the earthיְדַבֵּרspeaketh:הַבָּאhe that comethמִשָּׁמַיִםfrom heavenנַעֲלֶהis aboveעַל־כֹּל׃all.

    He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

32. 32

    וְאֵתAndאֲשֶׁרwhatרָאָהhe hath seenוְשָׁמַעand heard,אֹתוֹhimיָעִידthat he testifieth;וְאֵיןand no manמְקַבֵּלreceivethעֵדוּתוֹ׃his testimony.

    And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.

33. 33

    וַאֲשֶׁרHe thatקִבֵּלhath receivedעֵדוּתוֹhis testimonyהוּאhathחָתוֹםsurely setחָתַםhis sealכִּיthatהָאֱלֹהִיםGodאֱמֶת׃is true.

    He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.

34. 34

    כִּיForאֲשֶׁרhe whomשְׁלָחוֹhath sentאֱלֹהִיםGodהוּאheיְדַבֵּרspeakethדִּבְרֵיthe words ofאֱלֹהִיםGod:כִּי־לֹאfor notבַמִּדָּהby measureנֹתֵןgivethאֱלֹהִיםGodאֶת־הָרוּחַ׃the Spirit

    For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

35. 35

    הָאָבThe Fatherאֹהֵבlovethאֶת־בְּנוֹthe Son,וְאֶת־כֹּלand all thingsנָתַןhath givenבְּיָדוֹ׃into his hand.

    The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

36. 36

    כׇּל־הַמַּאֲמִיןHe that believethבַּבֵּןon the Sonיֶשׁ־לוֹhathחַיֵּיlife:עוֹלָםeverlastingוַאֲשֶׁרand he thatלֹאnotיַאֲמִיןbelievethבַּבֵּןthe Sonלֹאnotיִרְאֶהshall seeחַיִּיםlife;כִּיbutאִםratherחֲרוֹןthe burningאַףof the wrath ofאֱלֹהִיםGodיִשְׁכֹּןabidethעָלָיו׃on him.

    He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
