1. 1

   אָזThenלָקַחtookפִּילָטוֹסPilate thereforeאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיְיַסְּרֵהוּand scourged him.בַּשּׁוֹטִים׃with scourges.

   Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

2. 2

   וַיְשָׂרֲגוּAnd plattedאַנְשֵׁיthe men ofהַצָּבָאarmyעֲטֶרֶתa crownקֹצִיםof thorns,וַיָּשִׁימוּand put itעַל־רֹאשׁוֹon his head,וַיַּעֲטֻהוּand they put on himלְבוּשׁa robeאַרְגָּמָן׃purple,

   And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

   וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd said,שָׁלוֹםHail,לְךָto you,מֶלֶךְKing ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews!וַיַּכֻּהוּand they smote himעַל־הַלֶּחִי׃with their hands.

   And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

   וַיֵּצֵאwent forthפִילָטוֹסPilate thereforeעוֹדagain,הַחוּצָהwent forthוַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,הִנְנִיBehold,מוֹצִיאI bring forthאֹתוֹhimאֲלֵיכֶםto you,לְמַעַןthatתֵּדְעוּyou may knowכִּיthatלֹא־מָצָאתִיI findבוֹin him.כׇּל־עָוֹן׃no fault

   Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

   וְיֵשׁוּעַThen Jesusיָצָאcame forth,הַחוּץwithout,וְעָלָיוwearingעֲטֶרֶתthe crownהַקֹּצִיםof thorns,וּלְבוּשׁand the robeהָאַרְגָּמָןpurple.וַיֹּאמֶרsaithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,פִּילָטוֹסAnd PilateהִנֵּהBeholdהָאָדָם׃the man!

   Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

   וַיְהִיAnd it came to passכַּאֲשֶׁרWhenרָאֻהוּsaw him,רָאשֵׁיthe chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriests thereforeוְהַמְשָׁרֲתִיםand officersוַיִּצְעֲקוּthey cried out,לֵאמֹרsaying,הַצְלֵבCrucify him,הַצְלֵבcrucify him.וַיֹּאמֶרsaithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,פִּילָטוֹסPilateקָחֻהוּTake you him,אַתֶּםyouוְהַצְלִיבֻהוּand crucify him:כִּיforאָנֹכִיIלֹא־מָצָאתִיfindבוֹin him.אָשְׁמָה׃no fault

   When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

   וַיַּעֲנוּansweredהַיְּהוּדִיםThe Jewsוַיֹּאמְרוּhim,תּוֹרָהa law,יֶשׁ־לָנוּWe haveוְעַל־פִּיand byתוֹרָתֵנוּour lawחַיַּב־מִיתָהhe ought to die,הוּאheכִּי־עָשָׂהbecause he madeעַצְמוֹhimselfבֶּן־אֱלֹהִים׃the Son of God.

   The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

8. 8

   וַיְהִיWhen thereforeכִּשְׁמֹעַheardפִּילָטוֹסPilateאֶת־הַדָּבָרsaying,הַזֶּהthatוַיּוֹסֶףhe was the moreלִירֹאafraid;עוֹד׃yet

   When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

   וַיָּשׇׁבAnd againוַיָּבֹאwentאֶל־בֵּיתinto theהַמִּשְׁפָּטjudgment hall,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֶל־יֵשׁוּעַunto Jesus,מֵאַיִןWhenceאָתָּהare you?וְלֹא־הֱשִׁיבוֹBut gave him noיֵשׁוּעַJesusדָּבָר׃answer.

   And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

10. 10

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen saithאֵלָיוunto him,פִּילָטוֹסPilateאֵלַיunto me?לֹאnotתְדַבֵּרSpeak youהֲלֹאis it notיָדַעְתָּknow you notכִּיthatיֶשׁ־לְאֵלI have powerיָדִיin my handלִצְלָבְךָto crucify you,וְיֶשׁ־לְאֵלand have powerיָדִיin my handלְשַׁלְּחֶךָ׃to release you?

    Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

11. 11

    וַיַּעַןanswered,יֵשׁוּעַJesusלֵאמֹרsaying,לֹאnotהָיְתָה־לְּךָYou could haveרְשׁוּתpower at allעָלַיagainst me,לוּלֵאexceptנִתַּן־לְךָit were given youמִלְּמָעְלָהfrom above:לָכֵןthereforeעֲוֹןsin.הַמַּסְגִּירhe that deliveredאֹתִיmeאֵלֶיךָunto youגָּדוֹלhath the greaterמֵעֲוֹנֶךָ׃sin.

    Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

12. 12

    אָזAnd from thenceforthיְבַקֵּשׁsoughtפִּילָטוֹסPilateלְשַׁלְּחוֹto release him:וְהַיְּהוּדִיםbut the Jewsקָרְאוּcried out,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,אִם־תְּשַׁלַּחIf you let go,אֶת־זֶהthis manאֵינְךָyou are notאֹהֵבfriend:לְקֵיסַרCaesar'sכִּיforכׇל־הָעֹשֶׂהwhosoever makethעַצְמוֹhimselfמֶלֶךְa kingמֹרֵדspeaketh againstבְּקֵיסַרCaesar.הוּא׃he

    And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Cæsar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Cæsar.

13. 13

    וַיְהִיWhen thereforeכִּשְׁמֹעַheardפִּילָטוֹסPilateאֶת־הַדָּבָרsaying,הַזֶּהthatהוֹצִיאhe brought forth,אֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֵּשֶׁבand sat downעַל־כִּסֵּאin the seatהַמִּשְׁפָּטjudgmentבַּמָּקוֹםin a placeהַנִּקְרָאthat is calledרִצְפָהthe Pavement,וּבִלְשׁוֹנָםbut in the Hebrew,גַּבְּתָא׃Gabbatha.

    When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14. 14

    וְהָעֵתAnd it wasעֶרֶבthe preparationפֶּסַחof the passover,וְכַשָּׁעָהand about hour:הָשִּׁשִּׁיתthe sixthוַיֹּאמֶרand he saithאֶל־הַיְּהוּדִיםunto the Jews,הִנֵּהBeholdמַלְכְּכֶם׃your King!

    And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

15. 15

    וְהֵםBut theyזָעֲקוּcried out,טוּלAway with him,טוּלaway with him,צְלֹבcrucifyאֹתוֹhim.וַיֹּאמֶרsaithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,פִּילָטוֹסPilateהֲצָלֹבShall I crucifyאֶצְלֹבshall I crucifyאֶת־מַלְכְּכֶםyour King?וַיַּעֲנוּanswered,רָאשֵׁיThe chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsאֵין־לָנוּWe have noמֶלֶךְkingכִּיbutאִם־קֵיסָר׃Caesar.

    But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cæsar.

16. 16

    אָזThenמְסָרוֹdelivered he him thereforeאֲלֵיהֶםunto themלְהִצָּלֵבto be crucified.וַיִּקְחוּAnd they tookאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיּוֹלִיכֻהוּ׃and led him away.

    Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

17. 17

    וַיִּשָּׂאAnd he bearingאֶת־צְלוּבוֹhis crossוַיֵּצֵאwent forthאֶל־הַמָּקוֹםinto a placeהַנִּקְרָאcalledמְקוֹםthe placeהַגֻּלְגֹּלֶתof a skull,וּבִלְשׁוֹנָםwhich is called in the Hebrewגָּלְגָּלְתָּא׃Golgotha:

    And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

18. 18

    וַיִּצְלְבוּthey crucifiedאֹתוֹhim,שָׁמָּהWhereוּשְׁנֵיand twoאֲנָשִׁיםmenאֲחֵרִיםotherעִמּוֹwith him,מִזֶּהon either sideאֶחָדone,וּמִזֶּהandאֶחָדone,וְיֵשׁוּעַand Jesusבַּתָּוֶךְ׃in the midst.

    Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

19. 19

    וּפִילָטוֹסAnd Pilateכָּתַבwroteעַל־לוּחַa title,וַיָּשֶׂםand put itעַל־הַצְּלוּבon the cross.וְזֶה־דְּבַרAnd the writingמִכְתָּבוֹwas,יֵשׁוּעַJESUSהַנָּצְרִיOF NAZARETHמֶלֶךְTHE KINGהַיְּהוּדִים׃OF THE JEWS.

    And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20. 20

    וִיהוּדִיםof the Jews:רַבִּיםmanyקָרְאוּthen readאֶת־הַמִכְתָּבtitleהַזֶּהThisכִּיforהַמָּקוֹםthe placeאֲשֶׁרwhereנִצְלַב־שָׁםwas crucifiedיֵשׁוּעַJesusקָרוֹבwas nighאֶל־הָעִירto the city:וְהַמִּכְתָּבand it wasכָּתוּבwrittenעִבְרִיתin Hebrew,וִיוָנִיתand Greek,וְרוֹמִית׃and Latin.

    This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

21. 21

    וַיֹּאמְרוּThen saidרָאשֵׁיthe chiefכֹּהֲנֵיpriests ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsאֶל־פִּילָטוֹסto Pilate,אַל־נָאnot,תִכְתֹּבWriteמֶלֶךְThe Kingהַיְּהוּדִיםof the Jews;כִּיbutאִם־אֲשֶׁרthatאָמַרhe said,אֲנִיI amמֶלֶךְKingהַיְּהוּדִים׃of the Jews.

    Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

22. 22

    וַיַּעַןanswered,פִּילָטוֹסPilateוַיֹּאמַרand saidאֵת־אֲשֶׁרWhatכָּתַבְתִּיI have writtenכָּתָבְתִּי׃I have written.

    Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

23. 23

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenצָלְבוּthey had crucifiedאַנְשֵׁיThen the men ofהַצָּבָאarmyאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיִּקְחוּtookאֶת־בְּגָדָיוhis garments,וַיְחַלְקוּםand madeלְאַרְבָּעָהfourחֲלָקִיםparts,חֵלֶקa partלְאִישׁto every soldierוְגַםand alsoאֶת־כֻּתׇּנְתּוֹhis coat:וְהַכֻּתֹּנֶתnow the coatלֹא־הָיְתָהwas withoutתְפוּרָהseam,כִּיbutאִם־מַעֲשֵׂהthe workאֹרֵגof a weaverמִפִּיהָfrom the topוְעַד־קָצֶהָ׃throughout.

    Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

24. 24

    וַיֹּאמְרוּThey said thereforeאִישׁa manאֶל־אָחִיוamong themselves,אַל־נָאLet us notנִקְרָעֶהָrend it,לִקְרָעִיםin pieces,כִּי־נַפִּילbut castעָלֶיהָfor it,גּוֹרָלlotsלְמִיwhoseתִהְיֶהit shall be:לְמַלֹּאתthat might be fulfilled,דְּבַרthe sayingהַכָּתוּבscriptureיְחַלְּקוּThey partedבְגָדַיmy raimentלָהֶםamong them,וְעַל־לְבוּשִׁיand for my vestureיַפִּילוּthey did castגוֹרָלlots.וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־כֵןThese things therefore did.אַנְשֵׁיthe men ofהַצָּבָא׃the soldiers

    They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

25. 25

    וְעַל־יַדNow byצְלוּבthe cross ofיֵשׁוּעַJesusעָמְדוּthere stoodאִמּוֹhis mother,וַאֲחוֹתand the sister ofאִמּוֹhis mother,מִרְיָםMaryאֵשֶׁתthe wife ofקְלוֹפָסCleophas,וּמִרְיָםand Maryהַמַּגְדָּלִית׃Magdalene.

    Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26. 26

    וַיַּרְאWhen sawיֵשׁוּעַJesus thereforeאֶת־אִמּוֹhis mother,וְאֶת־תַּלְמִידוֹand discipleאֲשֶׁרwhomאָהַבhe loved,עֹמְדִיםstandingאֶצְלוֹby,וַיֹּאמֶרhe saithאֶל־אִמּוֹunto his mother,אִשָּׁהWoman,הִנֵּהbeholdבְּנֵךְ׃your son!

    When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

27. 27

    וְאַחַרThenאָמַרsaith heאֶל־תַּלְמִידוֹto the disciple,הִנֵּהBeholdאִמֶּךָyour mother!וּמִן־הַשָּׁעָהAnd from hourהַהִיאthatאָסַףtookאֹתָהּherהַתַּלְמִידthat discipleאֶל־בֵּיתוֹ׃unto his own home.

    Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

28. 28

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passמֵאַחֲרֵי־כֵןAfter this,כַּאֲשֶׁרasיָדַעknowingיֵשׁוּעַJesusכִּיthatכְבָרnowנַעֲשָׂהwere accomplished,הַכֹּלall thingsלְמַעַןthatיִמָּלֵאmight be fulfilled,הַכָּתוּבthe scriptureכֻּלּוֹwholly,אָמַרsaith,צָמֵאתִי׃I thirst.

    After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

29. 29

    וְשָׁם־כְּלִיNow there was a vesselמָלֵאfullחֹמֶץof vinegar:וַיִּטְבְּלוּand they filledסְפוֹגa spungeבַּחֹמֶץwith vinegar,וַיָּשִׂימוּand put itעַל־אֵזוֹבupon hyssop,וַיַּקְרִיבוּand put itאֶל־פִּיו׃to his mouth.

    Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

30. 30

    וַיִּקַּחWhen had receivedיֵשׁוּעַJesus thereforeאֶת־הַחֹמֶץthe vinegar,וַיֹּאמֶרhe said,כֻּלָּהIt is finished:וַיֵּטand he bowedאֶת־רֹאשׁוֹhis head,וַתֵּצֵאand gave upרוּחוֹ׃the ghost.

    When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

31. 31

    וְהַיְּהוּדִיםThe Jews therefore,אָמְרוּsaid thatלֹאnotיָלִינוּshould remainהַפְּגָרִיםthe bodiesעַל־הַצְּלוּבupon the crossבְּיוֹםon day,הַשַּׁבָּתthe sabbathכִּי־עֶרֶבbecause it was the preparation,שַׁבָּתof the sabbathהָיָהit was,וְגָדוֹלwas an highיוֹםday,הַשַּׁבָּת(for that sabbath dayהַהוּאthatוַיִּשְׁאֲלוּbesoughtמִן־פִּילָטוֹסPilateלְשַׁבֵּרthat might be broken,אֶת־שׁוֹקֵיהֶםtheir legsוּלְהוֹרִידand that they might be taken away.אֹתָם׃them

    The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32. 32

    וַיָּבֹאוּThen cameאַנְשֵׁיthe men ofהַצָּבָאarmyוַיְשַׁבְּרוּand brakeאֶת־שׁוֹקֵיthe legs ofהָאֶחָדthe first,וְאֶת־שׁוֹקֵיand ofהַשֵּׁנִיthe otherהַנִּצְלָבִיםwhich was crucifiedעִמּוֹ׃with him.

    Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

33. 33

    וַיָּבֹאוּBut when they cameאֶל־יֵשׁוּעַto Jesus,וַיִּרְאוּand sawוְהִנֵּהbehold,מֵתhe was dead already,וְלֹאnotשִׁבְּרוּthey brakeאֶת־שׁוֹקָיו׃his legs:

    But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

34. 34

    וְאֶחָדBut oneמֵאַנְשֵׁיof the men ofהַצָּבָאarmyדְּקָרוֹpiercedבַחֲנִיתwith a spearבְּצִדּוֹhis side,וַיֵּצֵאand forthwith came there outדָּםbloodוָמָיִם׃and water.

    But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

35. 35

    וְהָרֹאֶהAnd he that sawזֹאתitהֵעִידbare record,וְעֵדוּתוֹand his recordקַיָּמֶתis true:וְהוּאand heיוֹדֵעַknowethכִּיthatאֱמֶתtrue,יַגִּידhe saithלְמַעַןthatגַּם־אַתֶּםyouתַּאֲמִינוּ׃might believe.

    And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

36. 36

    כִּיForזֹאתthese thingsהָיְתָהwere done,לְמַלֹּאתthat should be fulfilled,הַכָּתוּבthe scriptureוְעֶצֶםA boneלֹא־תִשְׁבְּרוּshall not be broken.בוֹ׃of him

    For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

37. 37

    וְעוֹדAnd againכָּתוּבscriptureאַחֵרanotherאֹמֵרsaith,וְהִבִּיטוּThey shall lookאֵלָיוon himאֵת־אֲשֶׁרwhomדָּקָרוּ׃they pierced.

    And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

38. 38

    וְאַחַרAnd after thisבָּאcameיוֹסֵףJosephהָרָמָתִיof Arimathaea,וְהוּאbeingתַּלְמִידa disciple ofיֵשׁוּעַJesus,בַּסֵּתֶרbut secretlyמִפְּנֵיfor fear ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews,וַיִּשְׁאַלbesoughtמֵאֵתofפִּילָטוֹסPilateאֲשֶׁרthatיִתְּנֵהוּhe mightלָשֵׂאתtake awayאֶת־גוּפַתthe body ofיֵשׁוּעַJesus:וַיַּנַּחgave him leave.לוֹunto himפִּילָטוֹסand PilateוַיָּבֹאHe came therefore,וַיִּשָּׂאand tookאֶת־גוּפַתthe body ofיֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus.

    And after this Joseph of Arimathæa, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

39. 39

    וַיָּבֹאAnd there cameגַּם־נַקְדִּימוֹןalso Nicodemus,אֲשֶׁרwhichבָּא־לְפָנִיםat the first cameבַּלַּיְלָהby night,אֶל־יֵשׁוּעַto Jesusוַיָּבֵאand broughtתַעֲרֹבֶתa mixtureמֹר־וַאֲהָלוֹתof myrrh and aloes,כְּמֵאָהabout an hundredלִיטְרִין׃pound weight.

    And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

40. 40

    וַיִּקְחוּThen took theyאֶת־גּוּפַתthe body ofיֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיְחַתְּלוּהָand wound itבְתַכְרִיכִיןin linen clothesעִם־הַבְּשָׂמִיםwith the spices,כְּמִנְהַגas the manner ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsלִקְבֹרis to bury.אֶת־מֵתֵיהֶם׃their dead.

    Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

41. 41

    וּבַמָּקוֹםNow in the placeאֲשֶׁרwhereנִצְלַבhe was crucifiedהָיָהthere wasגָןa garden;וּבַגָּןand in the gardenקֶבֶרa sepulchre,חָדָשׁnewאֲשֶׁרwhereinלֹא־הֻנַּחwas never laid.בּוֹin itמֵתmanעַד־הֵנָּה׃yet

    Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

42. 42

    שָׁםThereשָׂמוּlaid theyאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesus thereforeכִּי־עֶרֶבbecause ofשַׁבָּתpreparation day;הָיָהit wasלַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews'וְהַקֶּבֶרfor the sepulchreקָרוֹב׃was nigh at hand.

    There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
