1. 1

   וַיְהִיAnd it came to passכְּכַלּוֹתWhen had spokenיֵשׁוּעַJesusלְדַבֵּרto speakאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםwordsהָאֵלֶּהthese,וַיֵּצֵאhe went forthהַחוּצָהoutעִם־תַּלְמִידָיוwith his disciplesאֶל־עֵבֶרoverלְנַחַלthe brookקִדְרוֹןCedron,וְשָׁםwhereהָיָהwasגַןa garden,וַיָּבֹאand enteredבוֹinto the whichהוּאhe,וְתַלְמִידָיו׃and his disciples.

   When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.

   וְגַם־יְהוּדָהAnd Judas also,מוֹסְרוֹwhich betrayed him,יָדַעknewאֶת־הַמָּקוֹםthe place:כִּי־פְעָמִיםfor ofttimesרַבּוֹתmanyנוֹעַדresortedשָׁמָּהthitherיֵשׁוּעַJesusעִם־תַּלְמִידָיו׃with his disciples.

   And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

   וַיִּקַּחhaving receivedיְהוּדָהJudas then,אֶת־הַגְּדוּדa band of menוּמְשָׁרְתִיםand officersמֵאֵתfromרָאשֵׁיthe chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand Pharisees,וַיָּבֹאcomethשָׁמָּהthitherבְּנֵרוֹתwith lanternsוּבְלַפִּידִיםand torchesוּבִכְלֵי־נָשֶׁק׃and weapons.

   Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

   וְיֵשׁוּעַJesus therefore,יָדַעknowingאֵת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרall things thatיָבֹאshould comeעָלָיוupon him,וַיֵּצֵאwent forth,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אֶת־מִיWhomתְבַקֵּשׁוּ׃seek you?

   Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

   וַיַּעֲנוּThey answered him,וַיֹּאמְרוּand they saidאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesusהַנָּצְרִיof Nazareth.וַיֹּאמֶרsaithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאֲנִיI amהוּאhe.וְגַם־יְהוּדָהAnd Judas also,מוֹסְרוֹwhich betrayed him,עָמַדstoodאֶצְלָם׃with them.

   They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

   וַיְהִיAnd it came to passבֶּאֱמֹרAs soon then as had saidיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אֲנִיI amהוּאhe,וַיִּסֹּגוּthey wentאָחוֹרbackward,וַיִּפְּלוּand fellאָרְצָה׃to the ground.

   As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

   וַיֹּסֶףThen againוַיֹּאמֶרasked heאֲלֵיהֶםthem,אֶת־מִיWhomתְבַקֵּשׁוּseek you?וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they said,אֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesusהַנָּצְרִי׃of Nazareth.

   Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

8. 8

   וַיַּעַןanswered,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidהֲלֹאis it notאָמַרְתִּיI have toldלָכֶםyouאֲנִיI amהוּאhe:לָכֵןthereforeאִם־אֹתִיif meתְבַקְשׁוּyou seek,הַנִּיחוּlet go their way:לָאֵלֶּהtheseוְיֵלֵכוּ׃and let them go:

   Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

9. 9

   לְמַלֹּאתThat might be fulfilled,הַדָּבָרthe sayingאֲשֶׁרwhichדִּבֵּרhe spake,אֲשֶׁרwhichנְתַתָּםyou gaveלִיmeמֵאֵלֶּהOf them whichלֹא־אָבַדhave I lostלִיunto meאַף־אֶחָד׃none.

   That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

    וּלְשִׁמְעוֹןThen SimonפֶּטְרוֹסPeterחֶרֶבhaving a swordוַיִּשְׁלְפָהּdrew it,וַיָּךְand smoteאֶת־עֶבֶדservantהַכֹּהֵןpriest'sהַגָּדוֹלthe highוַיְקַצֵּץand cut offאֶת־אׇזְנוֹhis earהַיְמָנִיתright.וְשֵׁםThe nameהָעֶבֶדof the servant'sמַלְכוֹס׃was Malchus.

    Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen saidיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֶל־פֶּטְרוֹסunto Peter,הָשֵׁבPut upחַרְבְּךָyour swordאֶל־נְדָנָהּinto the sheath:הֲלֹא־אֶשְׁתֶּהshall I not drinkאֶת־הַכּוֹסthe cupאֲשֶׁרwhichנָתַן־לִיhath given me,אָבִי׃my Father

    Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

12. 12

    אָזThenתָּפְשׂוּtookהַגְּדוּדthe bandוְשַׂרand the captainהָאֶלֶףof the thousandוּמְשָׁרֲתֵיand officers ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיַּאַסְרֻהוּ׃and bound him,

    Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,

    וַיּוֹלִיכֻהוּAnd led him awayבָרִאשׁוֹנָהfirst;אֶל־חָנָןto Annasכִּיforהוּאheהָיָהwasחוֹתֵןfather in law toקַיָּפָאCaiaphas,אֲשֶׁרwhich wasשִׁמֵּשׁservedבִּכְהֻנָּהthe priestגְדוֹלָהhighבַּשָּׁנָהyear.הַהִיא׃that same

    And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

14. 14

    הוּאheקַיָּפָאNow Caiaphasאֲשֶׁרwas he, whichיָעַץgave counselאֶת־הַיְּהוּדִיםto the Jews,לֵאמֹרsaying,טוֹבthat it was expedientאֲשֶׁרthatאִישׁ־אֶחָדone manיֹאבַדshould dieבְּעַדforכׇּל־הָעָם׃the people.

    Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

15. 15

    וְשִׁמְעוֹןAnd SimonפֶּטְרוֹסPeterוְתַלְמִידdisciple,אַחֵרand so did anotherהָלְכוּfollowedאַחֲרֵיafterיֵשׁוּעַJesus,וְהַתַּלְמִידthat discipleהַהוּאthatהָיָהwasנוֹדָעknownלַכֹּהֵןunto the priest,הַגָּדוֹלhighוַיָּבֹאand went inעִם־יֵשׁוּעַwith Jesusלַחֲצַרinto the palace ofהַכֹּהֵןthe priest.הַגָּדוֹל׃high

    And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

    וּפֶטְרוֹסBut Peterעָמַדstoodמִחוּץwithout.לַשָּׁעַרat the doorוַיֵּצֵאThen went outהַתַּלְמִידdisciple,הָאַחֵרthat otherהַנּוֹדָעwhich was knownלַכֹּהֵןunto the priest,הַגָּדוֹלhighוַיְדַבֵּרand spakeאֶל־הַשֹּׁעֶרֶתunto her that kept the door,וַיָּבֵאand brought inאֶת־פֶּטְרוֹסPeter.הַבָּיְתָה׃into the house.

    But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

17. 17

    וַתֹּאמֶרThen saithהָאָמָהthe damselהַשֹּׁעֶרֶתthat kept the doorאֶל־פֶּטְרוֹסunto Peter,הֲלֹאArt notגַם־אַתָּהyou alsoמִתַּלְמִידֵיone of disciples?הָאִישׁman'sהַזֶּהthisוַיֹּאמֶרHe saith,לֹא׃I am not.

    Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.

18. 18

    וְהָעֲבָדִיםAnd the servantsוְהַמְשָׁרֲתִיםand officersהִדְלִיקוּwho had madeאֵשׁa fireגֶּחָלִיםof coals;מִפְּנֵיforהַקֹּרit was cold:וַיַּעַמְדוּstood there,וַיִּתְחַמָּמוּand they warmed themselves:וְגַם־פֶּטְרוֹסand Peterעֹמֵדstoodעִמָּםwith them,וּמִתְחַמֵּם׃and warmed himself.

    And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

19. 19

    וַיִּשְׁאַלaskedהַכֹּהֵןThe priestהַגָּדוֹלhigh thenאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesusעַל־תַּלְמִידָיוof his disciples,וְעַל־לִקְחוֹ׃and of his doctrine.

    The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

20. 20

    וַיַּעַןansweredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוhim,אָנֹכִיIדִבַּרְתִּיspakeבְּאׇזְנֵיopenly toכׇל־הָעוֹלָםthe world;וְתָמִידI everלִמַּדְתִּיtaughtבְּבֵיתin theכְּנֵסֶתsynagogue,וּבְבֵיתand inהַמִּקְדָּשׁthe temple,אֲשֶׁרwhitherכׇּל־הַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsנִקְהָלִיםalways resort;שָׁמָּהthitherוְלֹא־דִבַּרְתִּיand have I saidדָבָרnothing.בַּסָּתֶר׃in secret

    Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

21. 21

    וּמַה־תִּשְׁאַלWhy askest youאֹתִיme?שְׁאַל־נָאaskאֶת־הַשֹּׁמְעִיםthem which heardמַה־שֶּׁדִּבַּרְתִּיwhat I have saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them:הִנָּםbehold,יוֹדְעִיםthey knowאֶת־אֲשֶׁרwhatאָמָרְתִּי׃I said.

    Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

22. 22

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passכְּדַבְּרוֹwhen he had spokenהַדְּבָרִיםthe wordsהָאֵלֶּהthus,וַיַּךְstruckאַחַדoneהַמְשָׁרֲתִיםof the officersהָעֹמֵדwhich stoodשָׁמָּהbyאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesusעַל־הַלְּחִיwith the palm of his hand,וַיֹּאמַרsaying,הֲכָזֹאתso?תַּעֲנֶהAnswerest youאֶת־הַכֹּהֵןthe priestהַגָּדוֹל׃high

    And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

23. 23

    וַיַּעַןansweredאוֹתוֹhim,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאִם־רָעָהIf evilדִבַּרְתִּיI have spoken,הַגֵּדbear witnessרָעָתִיof the evil:וְאִם־טוֹבbut if well,מַדּוּעַwhyתַּכֶּהsmitest youלְחָיָי׃me?

    Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

24. 24

    וַיְשַׁלְּחֵהוּhad sent himחָנָןNow Annasאָסוּרboundבַּאֲזִקִּיםin chainsאֶל־קַיָּפָאunto Caiaphasהַכֹּהֵןthe priest.הַגָּדוֹל׃high

    Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

25. 25

    וְשִׁמְעוֹןAnd SimonפֶּטְרוֹסPeterעֹמֵדstoodוּמִתְחַמֵּםand warmed himself.וַיֹּאמְרוּThey said thereforeאֵלָיוunto him,הֲלֹאArt notגַם־אַתָּהyou alsoמִתַּלְמִידָיוone of his disciples?וַיְכַחֵשׁHe denied it,וַיֹּאמֶרand said,לֹא׃I am not.

    And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.

26. 26

    וַיֹּאמֶרsaith,אִישׁOneמֵעַבְדֵיof the servants ofהַכֹּהֵןthe priest,הַגָּדוֹלhighוְהוּאbeingמוֹדָעhis kinsmanלַאֲשֶׁרwhoseקִצֵּץcut off,פֶּטְרוֹסPeterאֶת־אׇזְנוֹearהֲלֹאDid notרְאִיתִיךָI see youעִמּוֹwith him?בַּגָּן׃in the garden

    One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

27. 27

    וַיֹּסֶףthen again:פֶּטְרוֹסPeterוַיְכַחֵשׁdeniedוּפִתְאֹםand immediatelyקָרָאcrew.הַתַּרְנְגוֹל׃the cock

    Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

28. 28

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passבַּבֹּקֶרin the morningהַשְׁכֵּםearly;וַיּוֹלִיכוּThen led theyאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesusמִבֵּיתfromקַיָּפָאCaiaphasאֶל־בֵּיתunto the hall ofהַמִּשְׁפָּטjudgment:וְהֵמָּהand they themselvesלֹאnotנִכְנְסוּwentשָׁמָּהinto the judgment hall,לְמַעַןlestאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־יִטַּמְּאוּthey should be defiled;כִּיbutאִםthatיֹאכְלוּthey might eatאֶת־הַפָּסַח׃the passover.

    Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

29. 29

    וַיֵּצֵאthen went outפִילָטוֹסPilateאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,וַיֹּאמַרand said,מַה־תַּאֲשִׁימוּWhat accusation bring youאֶת־הָאִישׁagainst man?הַזֶּה׃this

    Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

30. 30

    וַיַּעֲנוּThey answeredוַיֹּאמְרוּand saidאֵלָיוunto him,לוּלֵאIf notהָיָהwereזֶהheעֹשֶׂהa doer ofרָעa malefactor,כִּיforעַתָּהnowלֹאnotהִסְגַּרְנֻהוּwe would have delivered him upאֵלֶיךָ׃unto you.

    They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

31. 31

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,פִּילָטוֹסPilateקְחוּTakeאֹתוֹhim,אַתֶּםyouוְשִׁפְטֻהוּand judge himכְתוֹרַתְכֶםaccording to your law.וַיֹּאמְרוּsaidאֵלָיוunto him,הַיְּהוּדִיםThe Jews thereforeאֵין־לָנוּIt is not lawful for usרְשׁוּתauthorityלְהָמִיתto put to death:אִישׁ׃any man

    Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

32. 32

    לְמַלֹּאתThat might be fulfilled,דְּבַרthe saying ofיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֲשֶׁרwhichדִּבֵּרhe spake,לִרְמֹזsignifyingאֵי־זוֹwhatמִיתָהdeathסוֹפוֹhis end wasלָמוּת׃he should die.

    That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

33. 33

    וַיָּשׇׁבThen again,פִּילָטוֹסPilateאֶל־בֵּיתentered intoהַמִּשְׁפָּטthe judgment hallוַיִּקְרָאand calledאֶל־יֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,הַאַתָּהAre youהוּאheמֶלֶךְthe Kingהַיְּהוּדִים׃of the Jews?

    Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

34. 34

    וַיַּעַןansweredאֹתוֹhim,יֵשׁוּעַJesusלֵאמֹרsaying,הֲמִלִּבְּךָof thyself,תְּדַבֵּרSay youזֹאתthis thingאוֹorאֲחֵרִיםothersהִגִּידוּ־לְךָdid tell it youעָלָי׃of me?

    Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

35. 35

    וַיֹּאמֶרanswered,פִּילָטוֹסPilateהֲכִיAmאָנֹכִיIיְהוּדִיa Jew?הֲלֹאis it notעַמְּךָYour own nationוְרָאשֵׁיand the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsהִסְגִּירוּךָhave delivered youאֵלָיunto me:מֶהwhatעָשִׂיתָ׃have you done?

    Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

36. 36

    וַיַּעַןanswered,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidמַלְכוּתִיMy kingdomאֵינֶנָּהis notמִן־הָעוֹלָםof world:הַזֶּהthisלוּ־הָיְתָהif wereמַלְכוּתִיmy kingdomמִן־הָעוֹלָםof world,הַזֶּהthisכִּיthenאָזthenנִלְחֲמוּwould fight,לִיunto meמְשָׁרֲתַיmy servantsלְבִלְתִּיthat I should not beהִמָּסֵרdeliveredבְּיַדtoהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews:אֲבָלbutעַתָּהnowמַלְכוּתִיis my kingdomאֵינֶנָּהnotמִפֹּה׃from hence.

    Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

37. 37

    וַיֹּאמֶרsaidאֵלָיוunto him,פִּילָטוֹסPilate thereforeאִם־כֵּןAre youאֵפוֹאthen?מֶלֶךְa kingאָתָּהyouוַיַּעַןanswered,יֵשׁוּעַJesusלֵאמֹרsaying,אַתָּהYouאָמַרְתָּsayestכִּי־מֶלֶךְthat a king.אָנֹכִיI amלָזֹאתTo this endנוֹלַדְתִּיwas I born,וְלָזֹאתand for this causeבָּאתִיcame Iבָעוֹלָםinto the world,לְהָעִידthat I should bear witnessלָאֱמֶתunto the truth.כׇּל־אֲשֶׁרEvery oneהוּאthatמִן־הָאֱמֶתis of the truthיִשְׁמַעhearethבְּקוֹלִי׃my voice.

    Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

38. 38

    וַיֹּאמֶרsaithאֵלָיוunto him,פִּילָטוֹסPilateמָהWhatהִיאisהָאֱמֶתtruth?וְאַחֲרֵיAnd whenדַבְּרוֹhe had saidזֹאתthis,יָצָאhe went outשֵׁנִיתagainאֶל־הַיְּהוּדִיםunto the Jews,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אֲנִיIלֹא־מָצָאתִיfindבוֹin himכׇּל־עָוֹן׃no fault at all.

    Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

39. 39

    הֵןButמִנְהַגa custom,הוּאheלָכֶםyou haveשֶׁאֲשַׁלַּחthat I should releaseלָכֶםunto youאִישׁoneאֶחָדoneחׇפְשִׁיfreeבַּפָּסַחat the passover:רְצוֹנְכֶםwill you thereforeשֶׁאֲשַׁלַּחthat I releaseלָכֶםunto youאֶת־מֶלֶךְthe Kingהַיְּהוּדִים׃of the Jews?

    But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

40. 40

    וַיּוֹסִיפוּThen again,וַיִּצְעֲקוּcried they allלֵאמֹרsaying,לֹאNotאֶת־הָאִישׁman,הַזֶּהthisאֶלָּאbutאֶת־בַּר־אַבָּאBarabbas.וּבַר־אַבָּאNow Barabbasהָיָהwasשֹׁדֵד׃a robber.

    Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
