1. 1

   וְשֵׁשֶׁתThen sixיָמִיםdaysלִפְנֵיbeforeחַג־הַפֶּסַחthe passoverבָּאcameיֵשׁוּעַJesusלְבֵיתto Bethany,הִינִי-any,מְקוֹםwhereלַעְזָרLazarus wasאֲשֶׁרwhomהֵעִירhe raisedמֵעִםfromהַמֵּתִים׃the dead.

   Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

2. 2

   וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־לוֹAnd they made himשָׁםthereמִשְׁתֶּהa supper;בָּעָרֶבin the eveningוּמָרְתָאand Marthaמְשָׁרֶתֶתserved:וְלַעְזָרbut Lazarusאֶחָדwas oneמִן־הַמְסֻבִּיםof them that sat at the tableאִתּוֹ׃with him.

   There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.

   וַתִּקַּחThen tookמִרְיָםMaryמִרְקַחַתof ointmentנֵרְדְּof spikenard,זַךְpureוְיָקָרand veryמְאֹדcostly,לִטְרָאa poundאַחַתoneמִשְׁקָלָהּin weight,וַתָּסָךְand anointedאֶת־רַגְלֵיthe feet ofיֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַתְּגַנֵּבand wipedאֶת־רַגְלָיוhis feetבְּשַׂעֲרוֹתֶיהָwith her hair:וְהַבַּיִתand the houseיִמָּלֵאwas filledרֵיחַwith the odorהַמִּרְקָחַת׃of the ointment.

   Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

   וַיֹּאמֶרThen saithאֶחָדoneמִתַּלְמִידָיוof his disciples,הוּאheיְהוּדָהJudasבֶּן־שִׁמְעוֹןSimon's son,אִישׁa man ofקְרִיּוֹתIscariot,אֲשֶׁרwhichיִמְסֹרshould betrayאֹתוֹ׃him,

   Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,

   מַדּוּעַWhyלֹא־נִמְכְּרָהwas not soldהַמִּרְקַחַתthis ointmentבִּשְׁלֹשׁfor threeמֵאוֹתhundredדִּינָרpence,וְנִתַּןand givenלָעֲנִיִּים׃to the poor?

   Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?

6. 6

   וְהוּאThis heלֹא־דִּבֶּרsaid, notזֹאתthatמֵחֶמְלָתוֹhe caredעַל־הָעֲנִיִּיםfor the poor;כִּיbut becauseגַנָּבa thief,הָיָהhe wasוְכִיסand had the bag,הַכֶּסֶףof the moneyבְּיָדוֹin his hand,וְנָשָׁאand bareמֵאֲשֶׁרwhatיָשִׂימוּwas putבוֹ׃therein.

   This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

   וַיֹּאמֶרThen saidיֵשׁוּעַJesus,הַנֵּיחָה־לָּהLet her alone:לְיּוֹםagainst the dayקְבוּרָתִיof my buryingצָפְנָהhath she keptזֹּאת׃this.

   Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

8. 8

   כִּיForהָעֲנִיִּיםthe poorתָּמִידalwaysעִמָּכֶםyou have with you;וַאֲנִיbut meאֵינֶנִּיyou have notתָמִידalwaysעִמָּכֶם׃with you.

   For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

9. 9

   וַיִּשְׁמְעוּknewעַם־רַבMuch peopleבִּיהוּדָהof the Jewsכִּי־הוּאtherefore that heשָׁםwas there:וַיָּבֹאוּand they cameלֹא־בַעֲבוּרnot for sakeיֵשׁוּעַJesus'לְבַדּוֹonly,כִּיbut thatגַם־לִרְאוֹתthey might see alsoאֶת־לַעְזָרLazarus,אֲשֶׁרwhomהֱעִירוֹhe had raisedמֵעִםfromהַמֵּתִים׃the dead.

   Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

10. 10

    וְרָאשֵׁיBut the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsהִתְיָעָצוּconsultedלַהֲרֹגthat they might put to deathאֶת־לַעְזָר׃Lazarus also;

    But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

11. 11

    כִּיBecause thatבִגְלָלוֹby reason of himבָּאוּwent away,שָׁמָּהthitherרַבִּיםmanyמִן־הַיְּהוּדִיםof the Jewsוַיַּאֲמִינוּand believedבְּיֵשׁוּעַ׃on Jesus.

    Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

12. 12

    וַיְהִיAnd it came to passמִמׇּחֳרָתon the next dayכִּשְׁמוֹעַwhen heardהָמוֹןpeopleרָבmuchאֲשֶׁרthatבָּאוּwere comeלָחֹגto keepהֶחָגthe feast,כִּי־יָבֹאthat was comingיֵשׁוּעַJesusיְרוּשָׁלָיִם׃to Jerusalem,

    On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

13. 13

    וַיִּקְחוּTookבְיָדָםin their handsכַּפּוֹתbranches ofתְּמָרִיםpalm trees,וַיֵּצְאוּand went forthלִקְרָאתוֹto meet him,וַיָּרִיעוּand cried,לֵאמֹרsaying,הוֹשַׂע־נָאHosanna:בָּרוּךְBlessedהַבָּאis he that comethבְּשֵׁםin the nameהָאָדוֹןof the Lordמֶלֶךְthe Kingיִשְׂרָאֵל׃of Israel.

    Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

14. 14

    וַיִּמְצָאAnd when he had foundיֵשׁוּעַJesusעַיִרa young ass,אֶחָדoneוַיִּרְכַּבsatעָלָיוthereon;כַּכָּתוּב׃as it is written,

    And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

15. 15

    אַל־תִּרְאִיFear not,בַּת־צִיּוֹןdaughter of Sion:הִנֵּהbehold,מַלְכֵּךְyour Kingיָבוֹאcometh,לָךְunto youרֹכֵבsittingעַל־עַיִרon a colt,בֶּן־אֲתֹנוֹת׃an ass's foal.

    Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.

16. 16

    וְתַלְמִידָיוhis disciplesלֹא־הֵבִינוּunderstood notבָּרִאשׁוֹנָהat the first:כׇל־זֹאתThese thingsאַךְbutאַחֲרֵיafterאֲשֶׁרthatנִתְפָּאַרwas glorified,יֵשׁוּעַJesusזָכְרוּthen remembered theyכִּי־כֵןthat these thingsכָּתוּבwere writtenעָלָיוof him,וְכֵןand thatגַּם־עָשׂוּthey had done these thingsלוֹ׃unto him.

    These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

17. 17

    וַיָּעִידוּbare record.הָרַבִּיםThe people thereforeאֲשֶׁרthatהָיוּwasאֶצְלוֹwith himבְּקׇרְאוֹwhen he calledאֶל־לַעְזָרLazarusלָצֵאתout ofמִן־הַקָּבֶרhis grave,וַיָּעַרand raisedאֹתוֹhimמֵעִםfromהַמֵּתִים׃the dead,

    The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.

18. 18

    עַל־כֵּןFor this causeהֲמוֹןthe peopleהָעָםalsoיָצָאwent forthלִקְרָאתוֹto meet him,כִּיfor thatשָׁמְעוּthey heardאֲשֶׁרthatעָשָׂהhe had doneאֶת־הָאוֹתmiracleהַזֶּה׃this.

    For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

19. 19

    וְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםThe Phariseesדִּבְּרוּtherefore saidאִישׁa manאֶת־אָחִיוamong themselves,לֵאמֹרsaying,הַרְּאִיתֶםPerceive youכִּיhowהוֹעֵילprevailלֹאnothing?תוֹעִילוּyou prevailהִנֵּהbehold,כׇל־הָעוֹלָםthe worldנִמְשַׁךְis goneאַחֲרָיו׃after him.

    The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

20. 20

    וּבְתוֹךְAnd amongהָעֹלִיםthem that came upלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֹתto worshipבֶּחָגat the feastאֲנָשִׁיםcertainיְוָנִים׃Greeks:

    And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:

21. 21

    וַיִּקְרְבוּThe same came thereforeאֶל־פִּילִפּוֹסto Philip,אִישׁwhich was ofבֵּית־צַיְדָהBethsaidaאֲשֶׁרofבְּאֶרֶץin the land ofהַגָּלִילGalilee,וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּand desiredמִמֶּנּוּhim,לֵאמֹרsaying,אֲדֹנִיSir,חָפַצְנוּwe wouldלִרְאוֹתseeאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus.

    The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.

22. 22

    וַיָּבֹאcomethפִילִפּוֹסPhilipוַיַּגֵּדand tellethאֶל־אַנְדְּרָיAndrew:וְאַנְדְּרַיand again Andrewוּפִּילִפּוּסand Philipהִגִּידוּtellאֶל־יֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus.

    Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

23. 23

    וַיַּעַןAnd answeredאוֹתָםthem,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמַרsaying,בָּאָהis come,הַשָּׁעָהThe hourשֶׁיִּפֹאַרthat should be glorified.בֶּן־הָאָדָם׃the Son of man

    And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

24. 24

    אָמֵןVerily,אָמֵןverily,אֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,אִםExceptלֹא־תִפֹּלfallהַחִטָּהa corn of wheatאֶל־תּוֹךְintoהָאֲדָמָהthe groundוּמֵתָהand die,תִּשָּׁאֵרit abidethלְבַדָּהalone:וְכַאֲשֶׁרbut ifמֵתָהit die,תַּעֲשֶׂהit bringeth forthפְּרִיfruit.הַרְבֵּה׃much

    Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

25. 25

    הָאֹהֵבHe that lovethאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹhis lifeיְאַבְּדֶנָּהshall lose it;וְהַשׂנֵאand he that hatethאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹhis lifeבָּעוֹלָםin worldהַזֶּהthisיִנְצְרֶהָshall keep itלְחַיֵּיunto lifeנֶצַח׃eternal.

    He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

26. 26

    וְאִישׁIf any manכִּיifחָפֵץdesireלְשָׁרֲתֵנִיto serve me,יֵלֵךְlet him followאַחֲרָיme;וּבַאֲשֶׁרand whereאֶהְיֶהI am,שָׁםthereיִהְיֶהshall beגַּם־מְשָׁרֲתִיalso my servantוַאֲשֶׁרand if any manיְשָׁרֲתֵנִיserve me,יְכַבְּדֶנּוּhim will honorאָבִי׃my Father.

    If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

27. 27

    עַתָּהNowנִבְהֲלָהis troubled;נַפְשִׁיmy soulוּמַהand whatאֹמַרshall I say?הַצִּילֵנִיsave meאָבִיFather,מִן־הַשָּׁעָהfrom hourהַזֹּאתthis:אַךְbutעַל־כֵּןfor this causeהִגַּעְתִּיcame Iלַשָּׁעָהunto hourהַזֹּאת׃this.

    Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

28. 28

    אָבִיFather,פָּאֵרglorifyאֶת־שְׁמֶךָyour name.וַיֵּצֵאThen came thereקוֹלa voiceמִן־הַשָּׁמַיִםfrom heaven,אֹמֵרsaying,פֵּאַרְתִּיI have both glorified it,וַאֲפָאֵרand will glorify itעוֹד׃again.

    Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

29. 29

    וְהָעָםThe people therefore,הָעֹמְדִיםthat stood by,שָׁמָּהthitherשָׁמְעוּand heard it,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaidרַעַםthat it thundered:נִשְׁמָעwas heard:וַאֲחֵרִיםothersאָמְרוּsaid,מַלְאָךְAn angelדִּבֶּרspakeאִתּוֹ׃with him.

    The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

30. 30

    וַיַּעַןansweredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמַרand said,לֹאnotהָיָהcameהַקּוֹלvoiceהַזֶּהThisלְמַעֲנִיbecause of me,כִּיbutאִםifלְמַעַנְכֶם׃for your sakes.

    Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

31. 31

    עַתָּהNowהָעוֹלָםworld:הַזֶּהof thisנִדּוֹןis the judgmentעַתָּהnowיֻשְׁלַךְshall be castשַׂרthe princeהָעוֹלָםworldהַזֶּהof thisחוּצָה׃out.

    Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

32. 32

    וַאֲנִיAnd I,בְּהִנָּשְׂאִיif I be lifted upמֵעַל־הָאָרֶץfrom the earth,אֶמְשֹׁךְwill drawכֻּלָּםall menאֵלָי׃unto me.

    And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

33. 33

    וְזֹאתThisדִּבֶּרhe said,לִרְמוֹזsignifyingאֵי־זֶהwhatהַמָּוֶתdeathאֲשֶׁרwhichיָמוּת׃he should die.

    This he said, signifying what death he should die.

34. 34

    וַיַּעֲנוּansweredאֹתוֹhim,הָעָםThe peopleוַיֹּאמְרוּand said,אֲנַחְנוּWeשָׁמַעְנוּhave heardמִןout ofהַתּוֹרָהthe lawכִּיthatהַמָּשִׁיחַChristיִכּוֹןabidethלְעוֹלָםfor ever:וְאֵיךְand howאָמַרְתָּsay you,בֶּן־הָאָדָםThe Son of manצָרִיךְmustלְהִנָּשֵׂאbe lifted up?וּמִיwho isבֶּן־הָאָדָםSon of man?הַהוּא׃this

    The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?

35. 35

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאַךְ־לְמִצְעָרYet a little whileיִהְיֶהisהָאוֹרthe lightעִמָּכֶםwith you.הִתְהַלְּכוּWalkבְּעוֹדwhileלָכֶםyou haveהָאוֹרthe light,פֶּן־יְשׁוּפְכֶםlest come upon you:חֹשֶׁךְdarknessוְהַהֹלֵךְfor he that walkethבַּחֹשֶׁךְin darknessלֹאnotיֵדַעknowethאָנָהwhitherהוּאheהֹלֵךְ׃goeth.

    Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

36. 36

    בְּעוֹדWhileלָכֶםyou haveהָאוֹרlight,הַאֲמִינוּbelieveבָאוֹרin the light,לְמַעַןthatתִּהְיוּyou may beבְּנֵיthe children ofהָאוֹרlight.אֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםthingsהָאֵלֶּהTheseדִּבֶּרspakeיֵשׁוּעַJesus,וַיֵּלֶךְand departed,וַיִּסָּתֵרand did hide himselfמִפְּנֵיהֶם׃from them.

    While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

37. 37

    רַבִּיםmanyהָאֹתוֹתmiraclesאֲשֶׁרthoughעָשָׂהhe had doneלְעֵינֵיהֶםbefore them,וּבְכׇל־זֹאתBut yetלֹאnotהֶאֱמִינוּthey believedבּוֹ׃on him:

    But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:

38. 38

    לְמַלֹּאתThat might be fulfilledדְּבַרthe saying ofיְשַׁעְיָהוּEsaiasהַנָּבִיאthe prophet,אֲשֶׁרwhichאָמָרhe spake,הָאָדוֹןLord,מִיwhoהֶאֱמִיןhath believedלִשְׁמֻעָתֵנוּour report?וּזְרוֹעַand the arm ofיְהוָֹהthe Lordעַל־מִיto whomנִגְלָתָה׃been revealed?

    That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?

39. 39

    עַל־כֵּןThereforeלֹאnotיָכְלוּthey couldלְהַאֲמִיןbelieve,כִּיbecause thatעוֹדagain,אָמַרsaidיְשַׁעְיָהוּ׃Esaias

    Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,

40. 40

    הֵשַׁעHe hath blindedעֵינֵיהֶםtheir eyes,וְהִשְׁמִיןand hardenedלְבָבָםtheir heart;פֶּן־יִרְאוּthat they should not seeבְּעֵינֵיהֶםwith their eyes,וּלְבָבָםnor with their heart,יָבִיןunderstandוְשָׁבוּand be converted,וְרָפָאתִיand I should healלָהֶם׃them.

    He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

41. 41

    כָּזֹאתThese thingsדִּבֶּרsaidיְשַׁעְיָהוּEsaias,בִּרְאוֹתוֹwhen he sawאֶת־תִּפְאַרְתּוֹhis glory,וַיִּנָּבֵאand spakeעָלָיו׃of him.

    These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

42. 42

    אוּלָםNeverthelessגַּםalsoמִן־הַשָׂרִיםamong the chief rulersהֶאֱמִינוּ־בוֹbelieved on him;רַבִּיםmanyאַךְbutבִּגְלַלbecause ofהַפְּרוּשִׁיםthe Phariseesלֹאnotהוֹדוּthey did confess him,לְמַעַןlestאֲשֶׁר־לֹאthat notיְנֻדּוּ׃they should be put out of the synagogue:

    Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:

43. 43

    כִּיForכְּבוֹדthe praise ofאֲנָשִׁיםmenחָבִיבthey lovedעֲלֵיהֶםunto themמִכְּבוֹדmore than the praise ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

    For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

44. 44

    וַיִּקְרָאcriedיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמַרand said,הַמַּאֲמִיןHe that believethבִּיon me,לֹא־בִיnot on me,הוּאheמַאֲמִיןbelievethכִּיbutאִם־בַּשֹּׁלֵחַon him that sentאֹתִי׃me.

    Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.

45. 45

    וְהָרֹאֶהAnd he that seethאֹתִיmeהוּאheרֹאֶהseethאֶת־שֹׁלְחִי׃him that sent me.

    And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.

46. 46

    אֲנִיIבָאתִיam comeאֶל־הָעוֹלָםinto the world,לִהְיוֹתto beאוֹרa lightלְמַעַןthatכׇּל־הַמַּאֲמִיןwhosoever believethבִּיon meלֹאnotיֵשֵׁבshould abideבַּחֹשֶׁךְ׃in darkness.

    I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

47. 47

    וְהַשֹּׁמֵעַAnd if any man hearאֶת־דְּבָרַיmy words,וְלֹאandיִשְׁמְרֵםbelieve not,אֲנִיIלֹאnot:אֶשְׁפֹּטjudgeאֹתוֹhimכִּיforלֹא־בָאתִיI came notלִשְׁפֹּטto judgeאֶת־הָעוֹלָםthe world,כִּיbutאִםifלְהוֹשִׁיעַto saveאֶת־הָעוֹלָם׃the world.

    And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

48. 48

    וְאִישׁHeאֲשֶׁרthatיִבְזֵנִיrejecteth me,וְלֹאandיִקַּחreceiveth notאֲמָרַיmy words,יֵשׁhathאֶחָדoneאֲשֶׁר־יָדִיןthat judgethאֹתוֹhim:הַדָּבָרthe wordאֲשֶׁרthatדִּבַּרְתִּיI have spoken,הוּאthe sameיָדִיןshall judgeאֹתוֹhimבַּיּוֹםin the dayהָאַחֲרוֹן׃last.

    He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

49. 49

    כִּיForאֲנִיIלֹאnotמִלִּבִּיof myself;דִּבַּרְתִּיhave spokenכִּיbutאִם־אָבִיthe Fatherהַשֹּׁלֵחַwhich sentאֹתִיme,הוּאheצִוַּנִיgave me a commandment,אֶת־אֲשֶׁרwhatאֹמַרI should say,וְאֶת־אֲשֶׁרand whatאֹמַרI should say,וְאֶת־אֲשֶׁרand whatאֲדַבֵּר׃I should speak.

    For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

50. 50

    וַאֲנִיAnd Iיָדַעְתִּיknowכִּיthatמִצְוָתוֹhis commandmentחַיֵּיis lifeעוֹלָםeverlasting:לָכֵןthereforeכׇּל־אֲשֶׁרwhatsoeverאֲדַבֵּרI speakכַּאֲשֶׁרeven asאָמַרsaidאֵלַיunto me,אָבִיthe FatherכֵּןsoאֲנִיIמְדַבֵּר׃speak.

    And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
