1. 1

   וַיְהִיNow there wasאִישׁa certain manחוֹלֶהsick,וְהוּאand he wasלַעְזָרLazarus,מִבֵּית־הִינִיof Bethany,כְּפַרthe town ofמִרְיָםMaryוּמָרְתָאand Marthaאֲחוֹתָהּ׃her sister.

   Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

2. 2

   הִיאIt wasמִרְיָםthat Maryאֲשֶׁרwhichאֶת־הָאָדוֹןthe Lordבְּמִרְקַחַתanointed the Lord with ointment,וַתְּנַגֵּבand wipedאֶת־רַגְלָיוhis feetבְּשַׂעֲרוֹתֶיהָwith her hair,וְלַעְזָרwhose brother Lazarusאָחִיהָher brotherהוּאheחָלָה׃was sick.

   (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

   וַתִּשְׁלַחְנָהTherefore sentאַחְיוֹתָיוhis sistersאֵלָיוunto him,לֵאמֹרsaying,אֲדֹנִיLord,הִנֵּהbehold,אֲשֶׁרhe whomאָהַבְתָּyou loveחֹלֶהis sick.הוּא׃he

   Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

   וַיִּשְׁמַעWhen heardיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמַרthat, he said,הַמַּחֲלָהsicknessהַזֹּאתThisלֹאis notלַמָּוֶתunto death,הִיאsheכִּיbutאִםratherלִכְבוֹדfor the glory ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,לְמַעַןthatיִכָּבֶד־בָּהּmight be glorified thereby.בֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִים׃the Son of God

   When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

   וְיֵשׁוּעַNow Jesusאָהֵבlovedאֶת־מָרְתָאMartha,וְאֶת־אֲחוֹתָהand her sister,וְאֶת־לַעְזָר׃and Lazarus.

   Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

6. 6

   וּכְשָׁמְעוּWhen he had heardכִּיthereforeחָלָהthat he was sick,וַיִּתְמַהְמָהּhe abodeוַיֵּשֶׁבand abode stillיוֹמַיִםtwo days stillבַּמָּקוֹםin the same placeאֲשֶׁר־הוּאwhere he was.שָׁם׃there

   When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

   וּמֵאַחֲרֵי־כֵןThen after thatאָמַרsaith heלְתַלְמִידָיוto his disciples,לְכוּLet us goוְנָשׁוּבָהagainאֶל־אֶרֶץintoיְהוּדָה׃Judaea.

   Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judæa again.

8. 8

   וַיֹּאמְרוּSayאֵלָיוunto him,תַּלְמִידָיוHis disciplesרַבִּיMaster,עַתָּהnowזֶהthisבִּקְשׁוּsoughtהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews of lateלְסָקְלְךָto stone you;וְאַתָּהand go youתָּשׁוּבgo you againשָׁמָּה׃thither again?

   His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

9. 9

   וַיַּעַןAnswered,יֵשׁוּעַJesusהֲלֹאAre there notשְׁתֵּים־עֶשְׁרֶהtwelveשָׁעוֹתhoursלַיּוֹםin the day?אִישׁIf any manכִּי־יֵלֵךְwalkבַּיּוֹםin the day,לֹאnot,יִכָּשֵׁלhe stumblethכִּיbecauseיִרְאֶהhe seethאוֹרthe light ofהָעוֹלָםworld.הַזֶּה׃this

   Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

10. 10

    וְהַהֹלֵךְBut if a man walkבַּלַּיְלָהin the night,יִכָּשֵׁלhe stumbleth,כִּיbecauseהָאוֹרlightאֵינֶנּוּthere is noבוֹ׃in him.

    But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

11. 11

    וְאַחֲרֵיAfterדַבְּרוֹthatכָּזֹאתthusאָמַרsaith heאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,לַעְזָרOur friend Lazarusיְדִידֵנוּour friendיָשֵׁןsleepeth;הוּאheוְאָנֹכִיbut I go,הֹלֵךְgo,לְמַעַןthatאֲעִירֶנּוּ׃I may awake him out of sleep.

    These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

12. 12

    וַיֹּאמְרוּThen saidתַּלְמִידָיוhis disciples,אֲדֹנִיLord,אִם־יָשֵׁןif he sleep,הוּאheיִרְפָּאhe shall do well.לוֹ׃unto him

    Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

13. 13

    וְיֵשׁוּעַHowbeit Jesusדִּבֶּרspakeעַל־מוֹתוֹof his death:וְהֵמָּהbut theyחָשְׁבוּthoughtכִּיthatעַל־מְנוּחַתof taking of rest inהַשֵּׁנָהsleep.דִּבֵּר׃he had spoken

    Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

14. 14

    אָזThenאָמַרsaidיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֲלֵיהֶםunto themמְפוֹרָשׁplainly,לַעְזָרLazarusמֵת׃is dead.

    Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

15. 15

    וְשָׂמֵחַAnd I am gladאֲנִיIבִּגְלַלְכֶםfor your sakesכִּיthatלֹא־הָיִיתִיI was notשָׁםthere,לְמַעַןto the intentתַּאֲמִינוּyou may believe;וְעַתָּהneverthelessנִסְעָהlet us goוְנֵלְכָהand goאֵלָיו׃unto him.

    And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

16. 16

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen saidתּוֹמָאThomas,הַנִּקְרָאwhich is calledדידוּמוֹסDidymus,אֶל־הַתַּלְמִידִיםunto his fellowdisciples,חֲבֵרָיוhis fellows,נֵלְכָהLet usגַם־אֲנַחְנוּalso go,לְמַעַןthatנָמוּתwe may dieעִמּוֹ׃with him.

    Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

17. 17

    וַיָּבֹאThen when came,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיִּמְצָאֵהוּhe foundזֶהthatאַרְבָּעָהfourיָמִיםdaysשֹׁכֵבhe had lainבַּקָּבֶר׃in the grave already.

    Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

18. 18

    וּבֵית־הִינִיNow Bethanyקָרוֹבwas nighלִירוּשָׁלָיִםunto Jerusalem,כְּדֶרֶךְaboutחֲמֵשׁfifteenעֶשְׂרֵהand tenרִיס׃furlongs off:

    Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

19. 19

    וְרַבִּיםAnd manyמִן־הַיְּהוּדִיםof the Jewsבָּאוּcameבֵּית־מָרְתָאto Marthaוּמִרְיָםand Mary,לְנַחֵםto comfortאֶתְהֶןthemעַל־אֲחִיהֶן׃concerning their brother.

    And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

20. 20

    וַיְהִיThenכִּשְׁמֹעַas soon as heardמָרְתָאMarthaכִּיthatבָאwas coming,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַתֵּצֵאshe wentלִקְרָאתוֹand met him:וּמִרְיָםbut Maryיוֹשֶׁבֶתsat stillבַּבָּיִת׃in the house.

    Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

21. 21

    וַתֹּאמֶרThen saidמָרְתָאMarthaאֶל־יֵשׁוּעַunto Jesus,אֲדֹנִיLord,לוּifהָיִיתָyou had beenפֹּהhere,כִּי־אָזthenלֹא־מֵתhad not died.אָחִי׃my brother

    Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

22. 22

    וְגַם־עַתָּהBut I know,יָדַעְתִּיthat even now,כִּיthatכׇל־אֲשֶׁרwhatsoeverתִּשְׁאַלyou will askמֵאֵתofאֱלֹהִיםGod,יִתֵּןwill give itלְךָyou.אֱלֹהִים׃God

    But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

23. 23

    וַיֹּאמֶרSaithאֵלֶיהָunto her,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאָחִיךְYour brotherקוֹםshall rise again.יָקוּם׃shall rise.

    Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

24. 24

    וַתֹּאמֶרSaithאֵלָיוunto him,מָרְתָאMarthaיָדַעְתִּיI knowכִּיthatיָקוּםhe shall rise againבַּתְּקוּמָהin the resurrectionבַּיּוֹםat the day.הָאַחֲרוֹן׃last

    Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

25. 25

    וַיֹּאמֶרSaidאֵלֶיהָunto her,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאָנֹכִיIהַתְּקוּמָהam the resurrection,וְהַחַיִּיםand the life:הַמַּאֲמִיןhe that believethבִּיin me,יִחְיֶהshall he live:גַּםthoughכִּי־יָמוּת׃he were dead, yet

    Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

26. 26

    וְכׇל־הַחַיAnd whosoever livethאֲשֶׁרwhichיַאֲמִין־בִּיand believeth in meלֹא־יָמוּתshall never die.לְעוֹלָםfor ever.הֲתַאֲמִינִיBelieve youלַדָּבָרthis?הַזֶּה׃this

    And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

27. 27

    וַתֹּאמֶרShe saithאֵלָיוunto him,כֵּןYea,אֲדֹנִיLord:הֶאֱמַנְתִּיI believeכִּי־אַתָּהthat you areהַמָּשִׁיחַthe Christ,בֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe Son of God,הַבָּאwhich should comeלָעוֹלָם׃into the world.

    She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

28. 28

    זֹאתAnd when she hadדִּבְּרָהso said,וְהָלְכָהshe went her way,וְקָרְאָהand calledלְמִרְיָםMaryאֲחוֹתָהּher sisterבַּסֵּתֶרsecretly,לֵאמֹרsaying,הִנֵּהbehold,הַמּוֹרֶהThe Masterפֹּהis come,וְהוּאandקֹרֵאcallethלָךְ׃for you.

    And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

29. 29

    הִיאAs soon as sheשַׁמְעָהheard that,וַתָּקׇםshe aroseוַתָּבֹאquickly, and cameאֵלָיו׃unto him.

    As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.

30. 30

    וְיֵשׁוּעַNow Jesusטֶרֶםwas not yetיָבֹאcomeאֶל־הַכְּפָרinto the town,כִּי־עוֹדֶנּוּbut was inעֹמֵדstandingבַּמָּקוֹםthat placeאֲשֶׁרwhereפְּגָשַׁתּוּ־שָׁםmet him.מָרְתָא׃Martha

    Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

31. 31

    וְהַיְּהוּדִיםThe Jewsאֲשֶׁר־בָּאוּwhich wereאֶל־בֵּיתָהּin the houseלְנַחֲמָהּwith her, and comforted her,כִּרְאוֹתָםwhen they sawאֶת־מִרְיָםMary,כִּי־קָמָהthat she rose upפִתְאֹםhastilyוַתֵּצֵאand went out,הָלְכוּfollowed her,אַחֲרֶיהָafter her,כִּיsaying,אָמְרוּthey said,הָלְכָהShe goethאֶל־הַקֶּבֶרunto the graveלִבְכּוֹתto weepשָׁמַּה׃there.

    The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

32. 32

    וַתָּבֹאThen when was comeמִרְיָםMaryאֶל־הַמָּקוֹםwhereאֲשֶׁרwhichיֵשׁוּעַJesusעֹמֵדwas,שָׁםthereוַתֵּרֶאand sawאֹתוֹhim,וַתִּפֹּלshe fell downלְרַגְלָיוat his feet,וַתֹּאמֶרsayingלוֹunto him,אֲדֹנִיLord,לוּifהָיִיתָyou had beenפֹּהhere,כִּי־אָזthenלֹא־מֵתhad not died.אָחִי׃my brother

    Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

33. 33

    וַיְהִיWhenכִּרְאוֹתtherefore sawיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֹתָהherבֹּכִיָּהweeping,וְגַם־הַיְּהוּדִיםand the Jews alsoאֲשֶׁר־בָּאוּweeping which came with her,אִתָּהּwith herבֹּכִיםweeping,וַתִּזְעֹםgroanedרוּחוֹhis spirit,וַיְהִיandמַרְעִיד׃was troubled,

    When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

34. 34

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd said,אֵיפֹהWhereהִנַּחְתֶּםhave you laidאֹתוֹhim?וַיֹּאמְרוּThey saidאֵלָיוunto him,אֲדֹנִיLord,בֹּאcomeוּרְאֵה׃and see.

    And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

35. 35

    וַיֵּבְךְwept.יֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus

    Jesus wept.

36. 36

    וַיֹּאמְרוּThen saidהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews,הִנֵּהBeholdמָהhowרַבָּהgreatlyהָאַהֲבָהloved he him!אֲשֶׁרwhichאֲהֵבוֹ׃he loved him!

    Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

37. 37

    וְיֵשׁAnd someאֲשֶׁרof themאָמְרוּsaid,הַפֹּקֵחַCould not this man, which openedעֵינֵיthe eyes ofהָעִוֵּרthe blind,הֲלֹאis it notגַּם־יָכֹלhave causedלַחֲשׂךְhave kept backאֹתוֹeven this manמִמָּוֶת׃from death?

    And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

38. 38

    וַיּוֹסֶףtherefore againעוֹדyetיֵשׁוּעַJesusלְהִזָּעֵםgroaning in himselfבְּרוּחוֹin his spirit,וַיָּבֹאcomethאֶל־הַקֶּבֶרto the grave.וְהוּאIt wasמְעָרָהa cave,וְאֶבֶןand a stoneעַל־מְבוֹאָהּ׃lay upon it.

    Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

39. 39

    וַיֹּאמֶרSaid,יֵשׁוּעַJesusשְׂאוּTake you awayאֶת־הָאֶבֶןthe stone.מֵעָלֶיהָfrom it.וַתֹּאמֶרSaithאֵלָיוunto him,מָרְתָאMartha,אֲחוֹתthe sister ofהַמֵּתhim that was dead,אֲדֹנִיLord,הִנֵּהby this timeכְּבָרalreadyבָּאָשׁhe stinketh:כִּי־אַרְבָּעָהfor he hath been dead fourיָמִיםdays.לוֹ׃unto him

    Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

40. 40

    וַיֹּאמֶרSaithאֵלֶיהָunto her,יֵשׁוּעַJesusהֲלֹאSaid I notאָמַרְתִּיsay Iלָךְunto you,כִּיthat,אִם־תַּאֲמִינִיif you would believe,תֶּחֲזִיyou should seeאֶת־כְּבוֹדthe glory ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God?

    Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

41. 41

    וַיִּשְׂאוּThen they took awayאֶת־הָאֶבֶןthe stoneאֲשֶׁרwhichהַמֵּתfrom the place where the deadהוּשַׂםwas laid.שָׁםthereוְיֵשׁוּעַAnd Jesusנָשָׂאlifted upאֶת־עֵינָיוhis eyes,לַמָּרוֹםon high,וַיֹּאמַרand said,אוֹדְךָI thank youאָבִיFather,כִּיthatעֲנִיתָנִי׃you have heard me.

    Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42. 42

    וַאֲנִיAnd Iיָדַעְתִּיknewכִּיthatתַעֲנֵנִיyou hear meתָּמִידalways:וְאוּלָםbutבַּעֲבוּרbecause ofהָעָםthe peopleהַזֶּהwhichאֲשֶׁרwhichסְבִיבוֹתַיstand byדִּבַּרְתִּיI said it,לְמַעַןthatיַאֲמִינוּthey may believeבִיin me,כִּיthatאַתָּהyouשְׁלַחְתָּנִי׃hast sent me.

    And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43. 43

    וַיְהִיAndכְּכַלּוֹתוֹwhen he thusלְדַבֵּרhad spoken,וַיִּקְרָאhe criedבְּקוֹלwith a voice,גָּדוֹלloudלַעְזָרLazarus,קוּםarise,צֵא׃come forth.

    And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44. 44

    וַיֵּצֵאAnd came forth,הַמֵּתhe that was deadוְיָדָיוand his handsוְרָגְלָיוand his feetכְּרוּכֹתboundבְּתַכְרִיכִיןwith graveclothes:וּפָנָיוand his faceלוּטִיםwas bound aboutבְּסוּדָרwith a napkin.וַיֹּאמֶרSaidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,יֵשׁוּעַJesusהַתִּירוּLooseאֹתוֹhim,וְיֵלֵךְand let him go.לְדַרְכּוֹ׃his way.

    And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

45. 45

    וְרַבִּיםThen manyמִן־הַיְּהוּדִיםof the Jewsאֲשֶׁרwhichבָּאוּcameאֶל־מִרְיָםto Mary,בִּרְאוֹתָםand had seenאֶת־אֲשֶׁרthe things whichעָשָׂהdid,יֵשׁוּעַJesusהֶאֱמִינוּbelievedבוֹ׃on him.

    Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

46. 46

    וְיֵשׁBut someאֲשֶׁרof themהָלְכוּwent their waysאֶל־הַפְּרוּשִׁיםto the Pharisees,וַיַּגִּידוּand toldלָהֶםthemאֶת־אֲשֶׁרwhat thingsעָשָׂהhad done.יֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus

    But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

47. 47

    אָזThenיַקְהִילוּgatheredרָאשֵׁיthe chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand the Phariseesאֶת־סַנְהֶדְרִיןa council,וַיֹּאמְרוּand said,מַה־נַּעֲשֶׂהWhat do we?כִּיforהָאִישׁmanהַלָּזֶהthisעֹשֶׂהdoethאֹתוֹתmiracles.הַרְבֵּה׃many

    Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

48. 48

    אִם־לֹאIfנִכְלָאֵהוּwe let him thus alone,כֻּלָּםall menיַאֲמִינוּwill believeבוֹon him:וּבָאוּand shall comeהָרוֹמִיִּיםthe Romansוְלָקְחוּand take awayגַּםbothאֶת־אַדְמָתֵנוּour placeוְגַםandאֶת־עַמֵּנוּ׃nation.

    If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

49. 49

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,אֶחָדoneמֵהֶםof them,וְהוּאand heקַיָּפָאCaiaphas,הַכֹּהֵןthe priestהַגָּדוֹלhighבַּשָּׁנָהyear,הָהִיאthat sameאַתֶּםYouלֹא־תֵדְעוּknowדָבָר׃nothing at all,

    And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

50. 50

    אַףNorלֹא־תִתְבּוֹנֲנוּconsiderכִּיthatטוֹבit is expedientלָנוּfor us,מוּתthat should dieאִישׁmanאֶחָדoneבְּעַדforהַגּוֹיthe people,מֵאֲבֹדand that should not perish.הָעָםthe whole nationכֻּלּוֹ׃whole.

    Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

51. 51

    וְלֹאAnd thisמִלִּבּוֹspake he not of himself:דִבֶּרspake heהַדָּבָרthe wordהַזֶּהthisכִּיbutהָיָהbeingהַכֹּהֵןpriestהַגָּדוֹלhighבַּשָּׁנָהyear,הָהִיאthatוַיִּנָּבֵאhe prophesiedאֲשֶׁרthatיָמוּתshould dieיֵשׁוּעַJesusבְּעַדforהָעָם׃that nation;

    And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

52. 52

    וְלֹא־בְעַדAnd notהָעָםfor that nationלְבַדּוֹonly,כִּיbutגַם־לְקַבֵּץthat also he should gather togetherאֶת־בְּנֵיthe children ofהַאֱלֹהִיםGodהַמְפֻזָּרִיםthat were scattered abroad.וְהָיוּand they should beלַאֲחָדִים׃in one.

    And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

53. 53

    וַיִּוָּעֲצוּThen they took counselיַחְדָּוtogetherלַהֲמִיתוֹfor to put him to deathמֵהַיּוֹםfrom that day forth.הַהוּאthatוָהָלְאָה׃and forward.

    Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

    עַל־כֵּןThereforeלֹא־הִתְהַלֵּךְwalked no moreיֵשׁוּעַJesusעוֹדyetבְּתוֹךְopenly amongהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews;לְעֵינֵיin the sight ofהָעָםthe peopleכִּיbutאִם־סָרwent thenceמִשָּׁםthenceאֶל־הָאָרֶץunto a countryהַקְּרוֹבָהnearלַמִּדְבָּרto the wilderness,אֶל־עִירinto a cityעֶפְרַיִםcalled Ephraim,וַיָּגָר־שָׁםand there continuedעִם־תַּלְמִידָיו׃with his disciples.

    Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.

    וַיִּקְרְבוּAnd was nigh at hand:יְמֵיthe days ofהַפֶּסַחpassoverלַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jews'וְעַם־רַבand manyעָלוּwentמִן־הָאָרֶץout of the countryיְרוּשָׁלַיְמָהup to Jerusalemלִפְנֵיbeforeהַפֶּסַחthe passover,לְהִתְקַדֵּשׁ׃to purify themselves.

    And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.

56. 56

    וַיְבַקְשׁוּThen sought theyאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַfor Jesus,וַיְהִיAnd it came to pass,הֵםandעֹמְדִיםspake among themselves, as they stoodבְּבֵיתin the temple,הַמִּקְדָּשׁthe temple,וַיְדַבְּרוּand spakeאִישׁa manאֶל־רֵעֵהוּto his fellow,מַה־תֹּאמְרוּWhat think you,הֲכִיthatיָבוֹאhe will not comeאֶל־הֶחָג׃to the feast?

    Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

57. 57

    וְרָאשֵׁיNow both the chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםand the Phariseesגָּזְרוּhad givenגְזֵרָהa commandment,אֲשֶׁרthat,אִם־יֵדַעif any man knewאִישׁa manאֶת־מְקוֹמוֹwhere he were,יוֹדִיעֶנּוּhe should shew it,לְמַעַןthatיִתְפְּשֹֻׁהוּ׃they might take him.

    Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.
