1. 1

   בְּרֵאשִׁיתIn the beginningהָיָהwasהַדָּבָרthe Word,וְהַדָּבָרand the Wordהָיָהwasאֵת־הָאֱלֹהִיםGod,וֵאלֹהִיםand Godהָיָהwasהַדָּבָר׃the Word.

   In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2. 2

   הוּאThe sameהָיָהwasבְרֵאשִׁיתin the beginningאֵת־הָאֱלֹהִים׃God.

   The same was in the beginning with God.

3. 3

   הַכֹּלAll thingsנִהְיָהwere madeעַל־יָדוֹby him;וּמִבַּלְעָדָיוand without himלֹאnotנִהְיָהwas madeכׇּל־אֲשֶׁרany thingנִהְיָה׃that was made.

   All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

   בּוֹIn himהָיוּwasחַיִּיםlife;וְהַחַיִּיםand the lifeהָיוּwasאוֹרthe lightלִבְנֵיofהָאָדָם׃men.

   In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5. 5

   וְהָאוֹרAnd the lightהֵאִירshinethבַּחֹשֶׁךְin darkness;וְהַחֹשֶׁךְand the darknessלֹאnotהִשִּׂיגוֹ׃comprehended it.

   And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6. 6

   וַיְהִיThere wasאִישׁa manשָׁלוּחַsentמֵאֵתfromהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,וּשְׁמוֹwhose name wasיוֹחָנָן׃John.

   There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7. 7

   הוּאThe sameבָאcameלְעֵדוּתfor a witness,לְהָעִידto bear witnessעַל־הָאוֹרof the Light,לְמַעַןthatיַאֲמִינוּmight believe.כֻלָּםall menעַל־יָדוֹ׃through him

   The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8. 8

   הוּאHeלֹא־הָיָהwas notהָאוֹרthat Light,כִּיbutאִםwas sentלְהָעִידto bear witnessעַל־הָאוֹר׃of that Light.

   He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9. 9

   הָאוֹרthe LightהָאֲמִתִּיThat was the true,הַמֵּאִירwhich lightethלְכׇל־אָדָםevery manאֲשֶׁרthatבָאcomethאֶל־הָעוֹלָם׃into the world.

   That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10. 10

    בָּעוֹלָםin the world,הָיָהHe wasוְעַל־יָדוֹand by himנִהְיָהwas madeהָעוֹלָםthe world,וְהָעוֹלָםand the worldלֹאnotיְדָעוֹ׃knew him.

    He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11. 11

    הוּאHeבָאcameבְּשֶׁלּוֹunto his own,וַאֲשֶׁר־הֵמָּהand they that wereלוֹhis ownלֹאnotקִבְּלֻהוּ׃received him.

    He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12. 12

    וְהַמְקַבְּלִיםBut as many as receivedאֹתוֹhim,הַמַּאֲמִינִיםto them that believeבִּשְׁמוֹon his name:נָתַן־עֹזgave he powerלָמוֹto themלִהְיוֹתto becomeבָּנִיםthe sonsלֵאלֹהִים׃of God,

    But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13. 13

    אֲשֶׁרWhich,לֹאnotמִדָּםof blood,וְלֹאnor ofמֵחֵפֶץthe will ofהַבָּשָׂרthe flesh,אַףnorלֹא־מֵחֵפֶץof the will ofגֶּבֶרman,נוֹלָדוּwere born,כִּיbutאִם־מֵאֱלֹהִים׃of God.

    Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14. 14

    וְהַדָּבָרAnd the Wordנִהְיָהwas madeבָשָׂרflesh,וַיִּשְׁכֹּןand dweltבְּתוֹכֵנוּamong us,וַנֶּחֱזֶהand we beheldכְבוֹדוֹhis glory,כִּכְבוֹדas the gloryבֵּןof the Sonיָחִידonly begottenלְאָבִיוof the Father,רַב־חֶסֶדfull of graceוֶאֱמֶת׃and truth.

    And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

15. 15

    וְיוֹחָנָןJohnהֵעִידbare witnessעָלָיוof him,וַיִּקְרָאand cried,לֵאמֹרsaying,הִנֵּהThisזֶהthisהוּאwas heאֲשֶׁרof whomאָמַרְתִּיI spake,הַבָּאHe that comethאַחֲרַיafter meהָיָהis preferredלְפָנָיbefore me:כִּיforקֹדֶם־לִיbefore meהָיָה׃he was.

    John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

16. 16

    וּמִמְּלוֹאוֹAnd of his fulnessלָקַחְנוּhave received,כֻלָּנוּall weחֶסֶדgraceעַל־חָסֶד׃for grace.

    And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

17. 17

    כִּיForהַתּוֹרָהthe lawנִתְּנָהwas givenבְּיַד־משֶׁהby Moses,וְהַחֶסֶדbut graceוְהָאֱמֶתand truthבָּאוּcameעַל־יְדֵיbyיֵשׁוּעַJesusהַמָּשִׁיחַ׃Christ.

    For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

18. 18

    אֵת־הָאֱלֹהִיםGodלֹא־רָאָהhath not seenאִישׁmanמֵעוֹלָםat any time;הַבֵּןthe Son,הַיָּחִידonly begottenאֲשֶׁרwhichבְּחֵיקis in the bosom ofהָאָבthe Father,הוּאheהוֹדִיעַ׃hath declared him.

    No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

19. 19

    וְזֹאתAnd this isעֵדוּתthe record ofיוֹחָנָןJohn,בִּשְׁלֹחַwhen sentהַיְּהוּדִיםthe Jewsכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוּלְוִיִּםand Levitesמִירוּשָׁלָיִםfrom Jerusalemלִשְׁאֹלto askאֹתוֹhim,מִיWhoאָתָּה׃are you?

    And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

20. 20

    וְהוּאAnd heהוֹדָהconfessed,וְלֹאand notכִחֵשׁdenied;וַיּוֹדֶהbut confessed,לֵאמֹרsaying,לֹאnotהַמָּשִׁיחַthe Christ.אָנִי׃I am

    And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

21. 21

    וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd they askedאֵלָיוhim,וּמִיAnd whoאָתָּהare you?הַאֵלִיָּסArt Eliasאָתָּהyou?וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saith,אֵינֶנִּיI am not.הַאַתָּהAre youהַנָּבִיאthat prophet?וַיַּעַןAnd he answered,לֹא׃No.

    And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

22. 22

    וַיֹּאמְרוּThen said theyאֵלָיוunto him,מִי־זֶהWhoאָתָּהare you?לְמַעַןthatנָשִׁיבwe may giveאֶת־שֹׁלְחֵינוּto them that sent usדָּבָרan answer.מַה־תּאֹמַרWhat say youלְנַפְשֶׁךָ׃of thyself?

    Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

23. 23

    וַיֹּאמֶרHe said,אֲנִיI amקוֹלthe voice ofקוֹרֵאone cryingבַמִּדְבָּרin the wilderness,פַּנוּMake straightדֶּרֶךְthe way ofיְהוָֹהthe LORD,כַּאֲשֶׁרasאָמַרsaidיְשַׁעְיָהוּEsaiasהַנָּבִיא׃the prophet.

    He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

24. 24

    וְהַשְּׁלוּחִיםAnd they which were sentבָּאוּwereמִן־הַפְּרוּשִׁים׃of the Pharisees.

    And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

25. 25

    וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּAnd they asked him,וַיֹּאמְרוּand saidאֵלָיוunto him,מַדּוּעַWhyאֵפוֹאthenמַטְבִּילbaptizestאָתָּהyou,אִם־אֵינְךָif you be notהַמָּשִׁיחַthat Christ,וְלֹאnorאֵלִיָּסElias,וְלֹאneitherהַנָּבִיא׃that prophet?

    And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

26. 26

    וַיַּעַןAnsweredאֹתָםthem,יוֹחָנָןJohnוַיֹּאמֶרsaying,אָנֹכִיIמַטְבִּילbaptizeבַּמָּיִםwith water:וּבְתוֹכֲכֶםbut among youעוֹמֵדthere standeth oneאֲשֶׁרwhomלֹאnotיְדַעְתֶּםyou knowאֹתוֹ׃him;

    John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

27. 27

    הוּאHe it is,הַבָּאwho comingאַחֲרַיafter meאֲשֶׁרwhichהָיָהis preferredלְפָנָיbefore me,וַאֲנִיwhoseנְקַלֹּתִיI am not worthyמֵהַתִּירto unlooseשְׁרוֹךְthe latchet ofנְעָלָיו׃his shoes.

    He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

28. 28

    וְזֹאתThese thingsהָיְתָהwere doneבְּבֵיתin Beth-עֲבָרָהabaraמֵעֵבֶרbeyondלַיַּרְדֵּןJordan,אֲשֶׁרwhereיוֹחָנָןJohnמַטְבִּילwas baptizing.שָׁם׃there.

    These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29. 29

    וַיְהִיAndמִמָּחֲרָתthe next dayוַיַּרְאseethיוֹחָנָןJohnאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesusבָּאcomingאֵלָיוunto him,וַיֹּאמַרand saith,הִנֵּהBeholdשֵׂהthe Lamb ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,הַנֹּשֵׂאwhich taketh awayחַטַּאתthe sin ofהָעוֹלָם׃the world.

    The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

30. 30

    זֶהThisהוּאis heאֲשֶׁרof whomאָמַרְתִּיI said,אַחֲרַיAfter meיָבֹאcomethאִישׁa manאֲשֶׁרwhichהָיָהisלְפָנָיpreferred before me:כִּיforקֹדֶם־לִיbefore meהָיָה׃he was.

    This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

31. 31

    וַאֲנִיAnd Iלֹאnotיְדַעְתִּיוknew him:כִּיbutאִםthatבַּעֲבוּרto the end thatיִגָּלֶהhe should be made manifestבְיִשְׂרָאֵלto Israel,בָּאתִיtherefore am I comeאֲנִיIלִטְבֹּלbaptizingבַּמָּיִם׃with water.

    And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

32. 32

    וַיָּעַדAnd bare record,יוֹחָנָןJohnוַיֹּאמַרsaying,חָזִיתִיI sawהָרוּחַthe Spiritכִּדְמוּתlikeיוֹנָהa doveיֹרֶדֶתdescendingמִשָּׁמַיִםfrom heaven,וַתָּנַחand it abodeעָלָיו׃upon him.

    And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

33. 33

    וַאֲנִיAnd Iלֹאnotיְדַעְתִּיוknew him:וְהַשֹּׁלֵחַbut he that sentאֹתִיmeלִטְבֹּלto baptizeבַּמַּיִםwith water,הוּאthe sameאָמַרsaidאֵלַיunto me,אֵת־אֲשֶׁר־תִּרְאֶהUpon whom you shall seeהָרוּחַthe Spiritיֹרֶדֶתdescending,וְנָחָהand remainingעָלָיוon him,הִנֵּהbeholdזֶהthe sameהוּאis heאֲשֶׁרwhichיִטְבֹּלbaptizethבְּרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁ׃with the Holy Ghost.

    And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

34. 34

    וַאֲנִיAnd Iרָאִיתִיsaw,וָאָעִידָהand bare recordכִּיthatזֶהthisהוּאisבֶּן־הָאֱלֹהִים׃the Son of God.

    And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

35. 35

    וַיְהִיAndמִמׇּחֳרָתthe next day afterוַיֹּסֶףagainיוֹחָנָןJohnוַיַּעֲמֹדstood,וְעִמּוֹand with himשְׁנַיִםtwoמִתַּלְמִידָיו׃of his disciples;

    Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

36. 36

    וַיַּבֵּטAnd lookingאֶל־יֵשׁוּעַupon Jesusוְהוּאas heמִתְהַלֵּךְwalked,וַיֹּאמַרhe saith,הִנֵּהBeholdשֵׂהthe Lamb ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God!

    And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

37. 37

    וּשְׁנֵיAnd the twoתַלְמִידָיוdisciplesשָׁמְעוּheardאֶת־דְּבָרוֹhim speak,וַיֵּלְכוּand they followedאַחֲרֵיafterיֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus.

    And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

38. 38

    וַיִּפֶןThen turned,יֵשׁוּעַJesusאַחֲרָיוafter himוַיַּרְאand sawאֹתָםthemהֹלְכִיםfollowing,אַחֲרָיוafter himוַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,מַה־תְּבַקֵּשׁוּWhat seek you?וַיֹּאמְרוּThey saidאֵלָיוunto him,רַבִּיRabbi,אֵיפֹהwhereתָלִין׃dwellest you?

    Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

39. 39

    וַיֹּאמֶרHe saithאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,בֹּאוּComeוּרְאוּand see.וַיָּבֹאוּThey cameוַיִּרְאוּand sawאֶת־מְקוֹםwhereמְלוֹנוֹhe dwelt,וַיֵּשְׁבוּand abodeעִמּוֹwith himבַּיּוֹםday:הַהוּאthatוְהָעֵתfor it wasכַּשָּׁעָהabout hour.הָעֲשִׂירִית׃the tenth

    He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

40. 40

    וְאַנְדְּרַיAndrew,אֲחִיbrother,שִׁמְעוֹןSimonפֶּטְרוֹסPeter'sהָיָהwasאֶחָדoneמִן־הַשְּׁנָיִםof the twoאֲשֶׁרwhichשָׁמְעוּheard speakמֵאֵתspeak,יוֹחָנָןJohnוַיֵּלְכוּand followedאַחֲרָיו׃him.

    One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

41. 41

    הוּאHeמָצָאfindethרִאשׁוֹנָהfirstאֵת־שִׁמְעוֹןSimonאָחִיוhis own brother,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֵלָיוunto him,מָצָאנוּWe have foundאֶת־הַמָּשִׁיחַ׃the Messias.

    He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

42. 42

    וַיְבִיאֵהוּAnd he brought himאֶל־יֵשׁוּעַto Jesus.וַיְהִיAndכְּהַבִּיטwhen beheldאֵלָיוhim,יֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמַרhe said,שִׁמְעוֹןYou are Simonבֶּן־יוֹחָנָןthe son of Jona:לְךָyouיִקָּרֵאshalt be calledכֵּיפָאCephas,וְהוּאwhich isבִיוָנִיתin Greekפֶּטְרוֹס׃Peter.

    And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

43. 43

    וַיְהִיThe dayמִמׇּחֳרָתfollowingוַיּוֹאֶלwouldיֵשׁוּעַJesusלָצֵאתgo forthהַגָּלִילָהinto Galilee,וַיִּמְצָאand findethאֶת־פִּילִפּוֹסPhilip,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֵלָיוunto him,לֵךְFollowאַחֲרָי׃me.

    The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

44. 44

    וּפִילִפּוֹסNow Philip wasמִבֵּית־צָיְדָהof Bethsaida,עִירthe city ofאַנְדְּרַיAndrewוּפֶטְרוֹס׃and Peter.

    Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45. 45

    וַיִּפְגַּעFindethפִּילִפּוֹסPhilipאֶת־נְתַנְאֵלNathanael,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֵלָיוunto him,מָצָאנוּWe have found him,אֵת־אֲשֶׁרof whomכָּתַבwrote,משֶׁהMosesבְּסֵפֶרin the book ofהַתּוֹרָהthe law,וְהַנְּבִיאִיםand the prophets, did write,אֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesusבֶּן־יוֹסֵףthe son of Josephמִנְּצָרֶת׃of Nazareth.

    Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

46. 46

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd saidאֵלָיוunto him,נְתַנְאֵלNathanaelהֲמִנְּצֶרֶתCan out of Nazarethיֵצֵאcomeטוֹבany good thing?וַיֹּאמֶרSaithאֵלָיוunto him,בֹּאComeוּרְאֵה׃and see.

    And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

47. 47

    וַיַּרְאSawיֵשׁוּעַJesusאֶת־נְתַנְאֵלNathanaelבָּאcomingלִקְרָאתוֹto him,וַיֹּאמֶרand saithעָלָיוof him,הִנֵּהBeholdבֶאֱמֶתindeed,בֶּן־יִשְׂרָאֵלan Israeliteאֲשֶׁרin whomאֵין־בּוֹis noרְמִיָּה׃guile!

    Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

48. 48

    וַיֹּאמֶרSaithאֵלָיוunto him,נְתַנְאֵלNathanaelאֵיךְWhenceיְדַעְתָּנִיknow you me?וַיַּעַןAnsweredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidלוֹunto him,בְּטֶרֶםBefore thatקָרָאcalledלְךָyou,פִּילִפּוֹסPhilipוְאַתָּהwhen you wereתַּחַתunderהַתְּאֵנָהthe fig tree,אָנֹכִיIרְאִיתִיךָ׃saw you.

    Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

49. 49

    וַיַּעַןAnsweredנְתַנְאֵלNathanaelוַיֹּאמֶרand saithאֵלָיוunto him,רַבִּיRabbi,אַתָּהyouבֶּן־אֱלֹהִיםart the Son of God;אַתָּהyouהוּאartמֶלֶךְthe King ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel.

    Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

50. 50

    וַיַּעַןAnsweredיֵשׁוּעַJesusוַיֹּאמֶרand saidאֵלָיוunto him,יַעַןBecauseאֲשֶׁרwhichהִגַּדְתִּיI saidלְךָunto you,כִּי־תַחַתunderהַתְּאֵנָהthe fig tree,רְאִיתִיךָI saw you,הֶאֱמַנְתָּbelieve you?הִנֵּהbeholdגְּדֹלוֹתgreater thingsמֵאֵלֶּהthan theseתִּרְאֶה׃you shall see.

    Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

51. 51

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saithאֵלָיוunto him,אָמֵןVerily,אָמֵןverily,אֲנִיIאֹמֵרsayלָכֶםunto you,מֵעַתָּהHereafterתִרְאוּyou shall seeהַשָּׁמַיִםheavenנִפְתָּחִיםopen,וּמַלְאֲכֵיand the angels ofאֱלֹהִיםGodעֹלִיםascendingוְיֹרְדִיםand descendingעַלuponבֶּן־הָאָדָם׃the Son of man.

    And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
