   מֵאַיִןme/A/yinfrom whereהַמִּלְחָמוֹתham/mil/cha/MOTthe warsוְהַמְּדָנִיםve/ham/me/da/NIMand the quarrelsבֵּינֵיכֶםbe/ne/KHEMamong youהֲלֹאha/LOis it notמִזֶּהmiz/ZEfrom hereמִתַּאֲוֹתֵיכֶםmit/ta/a/vo/te/KHEMfrom your desiresהַנִּלְחָמוֹתhan/nil/cha/MOTthat warבְּאֵבָרֵיכֶם׃be/e/va/re/KHEMin your members

   From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

   תִּתְאַוּוּtit/av/VUyou desireוְאֵיןve/ENand there is notלָכֶםla/KHEMto youתִּרְצְחוּtir/tse/CHUyou murderוְתַחְמְדוּve/tach/me/DUand covetוְלֹאve/LOand notתוּכְלוּtukh/LUcanלְהַשִּׂיגle/has/SIGto obtainתָּרִיבוּta/ri/VUyou quarrelוְתִלָּחֲמוּve/til/la/cha/MUand you fightוְאֵיןve/ENand there is notלָכֶםla/KHEMto youמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbecauseאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹאlonotשְׁאֶלְתֶּם׃she/el/TEMyou ask

   Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

   שֹׁאֲלִיםsho/a/LIMaskאַתֶּםat/TEMyouוְלֹאve/LOand notתִקְחוּtik/CHUyou will receiveכִּיkibecauseשְׁאֶלְתֶּםshe/el/TEMyou askedבְּרָעָהbe/ra/Ain evilלְמַעַןle/MA/anso thatתְּכַלּוּהוּte/khal/lu/HUyou may spend itבְּתַאֲוֹתֵיכֶם׃be/ta/a/vo/te/KHEMon your desires

   Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

   נֹאֲפִיםno/a/FIMadulterersוְנֹאֲפוֹתve/no/a/FOTand adulteressesהֲלֹאha/LOdo notיְדַעְתֶּםye/da/TEMyou knowכִּי־אַהֲבַתki-a/ha/VATthat the love ofהָעוֹלָםha/o/LAMthe worldאֵיבָהe/VAenmityלֵאלֹהִיםle/lo/HIMto Godהִיאhiisעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeהֶחָפֵץhe/cha/FETSwhoever wantsלִהְיוֹתlih/YOTto beאֹהֵבo/HEVa friend ofהָעוֹלָםha/o/LAMthe worldאֹיֵבo/YEVan enemyאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodהוּא׃huis

   Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

   הַתְדַמּוּhat/dam/MUdo you imagineבְנַפְשְׁכֶםve/naf/she/KHEMin your soulכִּיkithatלָרִיקla/RIKin vainאֹמֵרo/MERsaysהַכָּתוּבhak/ka/TUVthe scriptureהָרוּחַha/RU/achthe spiritהַשֹּׁכֶנֶתhash/sho/KHE/netthat dwellsבָּנוּBA/nuin usתִּתְאַוֶּהtit/av/VEdesiresלְקִנְאָה׃le/kin/Ato jealousy

   Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

   אֲבָלa/VALbutיוֹסִיףyo/SIFHe gives moreלָתֵתla/TETto giveחֵןchengraceעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeהוּאhuheאֹמֵרo/MERsaysאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodעֹמֵדo/MEDstands againstלְנֶגֶדle/NE/gedagainstגֵּאִיםge/IMthe proudוְלַעֲנָוִיםve/la/a/na/VIMand to the meekיִתֶּן־חֵן׃yit/TEN-chengives grace

   But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

   לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeהִכָּנְעוּhik/ka/ne/Usubmitלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodעִמְדוּim/DUstand againstלְנֶגֶדle/NE/gedagainstהַשָּׂטָןHas/sa/TANSatanוְיִבְרַחve/yiv/RACHand he will fleeמִפְּנֵיכֶם׃mip/pe/ne/KHEMfrom you

   Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

   קִרְבוּkir/VUdraw nearאֶל־אֱלֹהִיםel-e/lo/HIMto Godוְהוּאve/HUand heיִקְרַבyik/RAVHe will draw nearאֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMto youטַהֲרוּta/ha/RUpurifyיְדֵיכֶםye/de/KHEMyour handsהַחַטָּאִיםha/chat/ta/IMyou sinnersוְזַכּוּve/zak/KUand purifyלְבַבְכֶםle/vav/KHEMyour heartחֲלוּקֵיcha/lu/KEyou divided inהַלֵּבָב׃hal/le/VAVheart

   Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

   הִתְעַנּוּhit/an/NUafflict yourselvesוְהִתְאַבְּלוּve/hit/ab/be/LUand mournוּבְכוּu/ve/KHUand weepשְׂחוֹקְכֶםse/chok/KHEMyour laughterיֵהָפֵךְye/ha/FEKHlet be turnedלְאֵבֶלle/E/velto mourningוְשִׂמְחַתְכֶםve/sim/chat/KHEMand your joyלְתוּגָה׃le/TU/gato grief

   Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

    הַשְׁפִּילוּhash/PI/luhumbleנַפְשְׁכֶםnaf/she/KHEMyourselvesלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהָאָדוֹןha/a/DONthe Lordוְהוּאve/HUand Heיָרִיםya/RIMwill lift upאֶתְכֶם׃et/KHEMyou

    Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

    אַל־תְּדַבְּרוּal-te/dab/be/RUdo not speakאִישׁisha manבְּרֵעֵהוּbe/re/E/huagainst his neighborאַחַיa/CHAYmy brothersהַמְדַבֵּרham/dab/BERthe one who speaksבְּאָחִיוbe/a/CHIVagainst his brotherוְדָןve/DANand judgesאֶת־אָחִיוet-a/CHIVhis brotherמְדַבֵּרme/dab/BERspeaksבַּתּוֹרָהbat/to/RAof the lawוְדָןve/DANand judgesאֶת־הַתּוֹרָהet-hat/to/RAthe lawוְאִם־תָּדִיןve/IM-ta/DINand if you judgeאֶת־הַתּוֹרָהet-hat/to/RAthe lawאֵינְךָe/ne/KHAyou are notעֹשֵׂהo/SEa doer ofהַתּוֹרָהhat/to/RAthe lawכִּיkibutאִם־דַּיָּן׃im-day/YANrather a judge

    Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

    אֶחָדe/CHADoneהוּאhuisהַמְחֹקֵקham/cho/KEKthe lawgiverאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoיָכוֹלya/KHOLis ableלְהוֹשִׁיעַle/ho/SHI/ato saveוּלְאַבֵּדu/le/ab/BEDand to destroyוּמִיu/MIand whoאַתָּהat/TAare youכִּיkithatתָדִיןta/DINyou judgeאֶת־עֲמִיתֶךָ׃et-a/mi/TE/khayour fellow

    There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

    לְכוּ־נָאle/KHU-nago nowהָאֹמְרִיםha/om/RIMwho sayהַיּוֹםhay/YOMtodayאוֹoorמָחָרma/CHARtomorrowנֵלֵךְne/LEKHwe will goאֶל־עִירel-irinto a cityפְּלֹנִיתpe/lo/NITsuchוְנַעֲשֶׂה־שָּׁםve/na/a/SE-shamand spend thereשָׁנָהsha/NAa yearוְנִקְנֶהve/nik/NEand buyוְנִמְכֹּרve/nim/KORand sellוְנַרְבֶּהve/nar/BEand gainהוֹן׃honwealth

    Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

14. 14

    וְאַתֶּםve/at/TEMand youלֹאlonotתֵדְעוּted/Uyou knowמַה־יִּהְיֶהma-yih/YEwhat will beלְמָחָרle/ma/CHARtomorrowכִּיkiforמַה־חַיֵּיכֶםma-chay/ye/KHEMwhat is your lifeאֵדeda vaporהוּאhuit isהַנִּרְאֶהhan/nir/Ethat appearsכִּמְעַט־רֶגַעkim/AT-RE/gafor a little momentוְאַחֲרֵי־כֵןve/a/cha/RE-khenand after thatכָּלָהka/LAvanishesוַיֵּלַךְ׃vay/ye/LAKHand goes

    Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

15. 15

    תַּחַתTA/chatinstead ofאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMon youלֵאמֹרle/MORto sayאִם־יִרְצֶהim-yir/TSEif willsהָאָדוֹןha/a/DONthe Lordנִחְיֶהnich/YEwe shall liveוְנַעֲשֶׂהve/na/a/SEand doזֹאתzotthisאוֹoorזֹאת׃zotthis

    For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

16. 16

    עַתָּהat/TAnowתִּתְהַלְלוּtit/hal/LUyou boastבְגַאֲוַתְכֶםve/ga/a/vat/KHEMin your prideוְכׇל־תְּהִלָּהve/KHOL-te/hil/LAand all boastingכָזֹאתkha/ZOTsuchרָעָהra/Aevilהִיא׃hiis

    But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

17. 17

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeהַיּוֹדֵעַhay/yo/DE/athe one who knowsלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto doהַטּוֹבhat/TOVgoodוְלֹאve/LOand does notיַעֲשֶׂנּוּya/a/sen/NUdo itחֵטְאchetsinהוּאhuit isלוֹ׃loto him

    Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
