   Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

   For by it the elders obtained a good report.

   Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

   By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

   By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

   But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

   By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

   By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

   By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

    כִּי־חִכָּהki-chik/KAfor he waitedלְעִירle/IRto a cityאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoseלָהּlahasיְסוֹדוֹתye/so/DOTfoundationsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoseבֹּנָהּbo/NAits builderוְעֹשָׂהּve/O/SAand its Makerהָאֱלֹהִים׃ha/e/lo/HIMis God

    For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

    בָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithשָׂרָהSa/RASaraגַם־הִיאgam-hishe alsoלָקְחָהla/ke/CHAreceivedכֹּחַKO/achstrengthלְהַזְרִיעַle/haz/RI/ato conceiveוַתֵּלֶדvat/TE/ledand boreאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterבְלֹתָהּve/lo/TAshe was worn outכִּי־חָשְׁבָהki-cha/she/VAfor she countedאֶת־הַמַּבְטִיחַet-Ham/mav/TI/achthe One who promisedלְנֶאֱמָן׃le/ne/e/MANfaithful

    Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

    עַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeמֵאֶחָדme/e/CHADfrom oneוְהוּאve/HUand heכְּמֵתke/METas deadיָצְאוּya/tse/Ucame outכְּכוֹכְבֵיke/khokh/VEas the stars ofהַשָּׁמַיִםhash/sha/MA/yimthe heavensלָרֹבla/ROVin multitudeוְכַחוֹלve/kha/CHOLand as the sandאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoעַל־שְׂפַתal-se/FATupon the shore ofהַיָּםhay/YAMthe seaאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹאlonotיִסָּפֵר׃yis/sa/FERcan be counted

    Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

    כׇל־אֵלֶּהkhol-EL/leall theseמֵתוּME/tudiedבָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithוְלֹאve/LOand notלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUreceivedאֶת־הַהַבְטָחוֹתet-ha/hav/ta/CHOTthe promisesאַךְakhbutרָאוּra/Useeingאוֹתָןo/TANthemמֵרָחוֹקme/ra/CHOKfrom afarוַיִּבְטְחוּvay/yiv/te/CHUand trustedבָהֶןva/HENin themוַיְחַבְּקוּvay/chab/be/KUand embracedאוֹתָןo/TANthemוַיּוֹדוּvay/yo/DUand confessedכִּי־גֵרִיםki-ge/RIMthat strangersהֵםhemthey wereוְתוֹשָׁבִיםve/to/sha/VIMand sojournersבָּאָרֶץ׃ba/A/retson the earth

    These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

14. 14

    כִּיkiforהָאֹמְרִיםha/om/RIMwho sayכָּאֵלֶּהka/EL/lesuch thingsמוֹדִיעִיםmo/di/IMmake knownכִּיkithatאֶרֶץE/retsa landהֵםhemtheyמְבַקְשִׁים׃me/vak/SHIMseek

    For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

    וְאׇמְנָםve/om/NAMand indeedלוּluifזָכְרוּza/khe/RUthey rememberedאֶת־הָאָרֶץet-ha/A/retsthe landהַהִיאha/HIthatאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatיָצְאוּya/tse/Uthey went outמִמֶּנָּהmim/MEN/nafrom itהָיָהha/YAit would have beenבְיָדָםve/ya/DAMin their handלָשׁוּב׃la/SHUVto return

    And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAbut nowנִכְסָפִיםnikh/sa/FIMlongingהֵםhemtheyלְאֶרֶץle/E/retsfor a landטוֹבָהto/VAbetterמִמֶּנָּהmim/MEN/nathan itהִיאhithat isאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich isבַּשָּׁמַיִםbash/sha/MA/yimin heavenעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeלֹאlonotבוֹשׁvoshis ashamedהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodלְהִקָּרֵאle/hik/ka/REto be calledאֱלֹהֵיהֶםe/lo/he/HEMtheir Godכִּי־הֵכִיןki-he/KHINfor He preparedלָהֶםla/HEMfor themעִיר׃ira city

    But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

    בָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithאַבְרָהָםAv/ra/HAMAbrahamכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenנֻסָּהnus/SAhe was testedהֶעֱלָהhe/e/LAoffered upאֶת־יִצְחָקet-Yits/CHAKIsaacוַאֲשֶׁרva/a/SHERand the one whoלָקַחla/KACHtookאֶת־הַהַבְטָחוֹתet-ha/hav/ta/CHOTthe promisesהֶעֱלָהhe/e/LAoffered upאֶת־בְּנוֹet-be/NOhis sonיְחִידוֹ׃ye/chi/DOhis only son

    By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

18. 18

    אֲשֶׁרa/SHERto whomנֶאֱמַר־לוֹne/e/MAR-loit was saidכִּיkithatבְיִצְחָקve/Yits/CHAKin Isaacיִקָּרֵאyik/ka/REshall be calledלְךָle/KHAto youזָרַע׃ZA/raseed

    Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

19. 19

    בְּחָשְׁבוֹbe/cha/she/VOcountingכִּיkithatיָכֹלya/KHOLwas ableאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodלַהֲקִימוֹla/ha/ki/MOto raise him upגַּםgamevenמִן־הַמֵּתִיםmin-ham/me/TIMfrom the deadאֲשֶׁרa/SHERfrom whichמִשָּׁםmish/SHAMfrom thereגַּםgamalsoלְקָחוֹle/ka/CHOhe received himבְּמָשָׁל׃be/ma/SHALin a parable

    Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

20. 20

    בָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithבֵּרַךְbe/RAKHblessedיִצְחָקYits/CHAKIsaacאֶת־יַעֲקֹבet-Ya/a/KOVJacobוְאֶת־עֵשָׂוve/ET-e/SAVand Esauעַל־הַבָּאוֹת׃al-hab/ba/OTabout things to come

    By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

21. 21

    בָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithיַעֲקֹבYa/a/KOVJacobוְהוּאve/HUand heמֵתmetdyingבֵּרַךְbe/RAKHblessedאֶת־שְׁנֵיet-she/NEthe twoבְנֵי־יוֹסֵףve/NE-yo/SEFthe sons of Josephוַיִּשְׁתַּחוּvay/yish/TA/chuand bowed himselfנִשְׁעָןnish/ANleaningעַל־רֹאשׁal-roshupon the head ofמַטֵּהוּ׃mat/TE/huhis staff

    By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.

22. 22

    בָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithיוֹסֵףYo/SEFJosephבְּמוֹתוֹbe/mo/TOwhen he diedהִזְכִּירhiz/KIRmentionedאֶת־צֵאתet-tsetthe departing ofבְּנֵיbe/NEthe sons ofיִשְׂרָאֵלYis/ra/ELIsraelוַיְצַוvay/TSAVand commandedעַל־עַצְמוֹתָיו׃al-ats/mo/TAYVabout his bones

    By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

    בָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithהִצְפִּינוּhits/pi/NUhidאֶת־מֹשֶׁהet-Mo/SHEMosesהוֹרָיוho/RAYVhis parentsשְׁלֹשָׁהshe/lo/SHAthreeיְרָחִיםye/ra/CHIMmonthsאַחַרa/CHARafterהִוָּלְדוֹhiv/va/le/DOhe was bornכִּרְאֹתָםkir/o/TAMwhen they sawאֶת־הַיֶּלֶדet-hay/YE/ledthe childכִּי־טוֹבki-tovthat goodהוּאhuhe wasוְלֹאve/LOand notיָרְאוּya/re/Uthey fearedמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbeforeמִצְוַתmits/VATthe command ofהַמֶּלֶךְ׃ham/ME/lekhthe king

    By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.

    בָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithמֵאֵןme/ENrefusedמֹשֶׁהMo/SHEMosesכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenגָּדַלga/DALhe grew upלְהִקָּרֵאle/hik/ka/REto be calledבֵןventhe sonלְבַת־פַּרְעֹה׃le/VAT-par/Oof the daughter of Pharaoh

    By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;

25. 25

    וַיִּבְחַרvay/yiv/CHARand choseלִסְבֹּלlis/BOLto bearעֳנִיo/NIafflictionעִם־עַםim-amwith the people ofהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodמֵהִתְעַנֵּגme/hit/an/NEGthan to enjoyלְעֵתle/ETfor a timeבְּתַעֲנוּגֵיbe/ta/a/nu/GEthe pleasures ofהַחֵטְא׃ha/CHETsin

    Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

    בְּחָשְׁבוֹbe/cha/she/VOcountingאֶת־חֶרְפַּתet-cher/PATthe reproach ofהַמָּשִׁיחַham/Ma/SHI/achthe Messiahלְעֹשֶׁרle/O/sheras richesגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreaterמֵאֹצְרוֹתme/ots/ROTthan the treasures ofמִצְרָיִםMits/RA/yimEgyptכִּיkiforהִבִּיטhib/BIThe lookedאֶל־הַגְּמוּל׃el-hag/ge/MULto the reward

    Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

    בָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithעָזַבa/ZAVhe leftאֶת־מִצְרַיִםet-Mits/RA/yimEgyptוְלֹאve/LOand notיָרֵאya/REfearingמֵחֲמַתme/cha/MATthe wrath ofהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingכִּיkiforהִתְחַזֵּקhit/chaz/ZEKhe was strongכְּרֹאֶהke/ro/Eas one seeingאֶת־אֲשֶׁרet-a/SHERhim whoאֵינֶנּוּe/NEN/nuis notנִרְאֶה׃nir/Eseen

    By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

    בָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithעָשָׂהa/SAhe keptאֶת־הַפֶּסַחet-Hap/PE/sachthe Passoverוּזְרֹקu/ze/ROKand the sprinkling ofהַדָּםhad/DAMbloodפֶּן־יִגַּעpen-yig/GAlest he touchבָּהֶםba/HEMthemמַשְׁחִיתmash/CHITthe destroyerהַבְּכוֹרִים׃hab/be/kho/RIMthe firstborn

    Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

    בָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithעָבְרוּa/ve/RUthey passed throughאֶת־יַם־סוּףet-Yam-sufthe Red Seaכְּבַיַּבָּשָׁהke/vay/yab/ba/SHAas by dry landאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִסּוּnis/SUtriedמִצְרַיִםMits/RA/yimthe Egyptiansלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto doטֻבְּעוּ׃tub/be/Uwere drowned

    By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.

    By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.

    By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.

    And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:

    Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,

    וְכִבּוּve/khib/BUquenchedאֶת־תֹּקֶףet-TO/kefthe power ofהָאֵשׁha/ESHthe fireוְנִמְלְטוּve/nim/le/TUescapedמִפִּיmip/PIfrom the mouth ofהַחֶרֶבha/CHE/revthe swordוּמֵחֻלְשָׁהu/me/chul/SHAand from weaknessהִתְחַזְּקוּhit/chaz/ze/KUwere strengthenedוְעָשׂוּve/a/SUand didחַיִלCHA/yilvaliantlyבַּמִּלְחָמָהbam/mil/cha/MAin battleוְהֵנִיסוּve/he/ni/SUand put to flightמַחֲנוֹתma/cha/NOTthe camps ofזָרִים׃za/RIMstrangers

    Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

35. 35

    נָשִׁיםna/SHIMwomenלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUreceivedאֶת־מֵתֵיהֶןet-me/te/HENtheir deadמִתְּחִיָּהmit/te/chiy/YAby resurrectionוַאֲחֵרִיםva/a/che/RIMand othersעֻנּוּun/NUsufferedוְלֹאve/LOand notרָצוּRA/tsuwantedאֶת־הַהַצָּלָהet-ha/hats/tsa/LAthe deliveranceלְמַעַןle/MA/anso thatיַשִּׂיגוּyas/SI/guthey might obtainתְּחִיָּהte/chiy/YAresurrectionטוֹבָהto/VAbetterמִמֶּנָּה׃mim/MEN/nathan it

    Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:

36. 36

    וַאֲחֵרִיםva/a/che/RIMand othersנֻסּוּnus/SUwere testedבְּלַעַגbe/LA/agin mockingsאַכְזָרִיakh/za/RIcruelוּבְשׁוֹטִיםu/ve/sho/TIMand with scourgesוְאַףve/AFand evenגַּםgamalsoבְּמוֹסֵרוֹתbe/mo/se/ROTin bondsוּבְמַסְגֵּר׃u/ve/mas/GERand in prison

    And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

37. 37

    נִסְקְלוּnis/ke/LUthey were stonedנֻסְּרוּnus/se/RUwere sawnבַמְּגֵרָהvam/me/ge/RAwith the sawנֻסּוּnus/SUwere testedנֶהֶרְגוּne/her/GUwere killedבֶּחָרֶבbe/CHA/revwith the swordוַיָּנֻעוּvay/ya/NU/uand wanderedעֲטוּפֵיa/tu/FEwrapped inעוֹרֹתo/ROTthe skins ofכְּבָשִׂיםke/va/SIMsheepוְעִזִּיםve/iz/ZIMand goatsבְּחֹסֶרbe/CHO/serin wantבְּצָרָהbe/tsa/RAin distressוּבְעִנּוּי׃u/ve/in/NUYand in affliction

    They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

38. 38

    אֲשֶׁרa/SHERof whomהָעוֹלָםha/o/LAMthe worldלֹא־הָיָהlo-ha/YAwas notרָאוּיra/UYworthyלָהֶםla/HEMof themהֵםhemtheyתָּעוּta/Uwanderedבַּמִּדְבָּרbam/mid/BARin the wildernessוּבֶהָרִיםu/ve/ha/RIMand in mountainsוּבַמִּנְהָרוֹתu/vam/min/ha/ROTand in densוּבִמְעָרוֹתu/vim/a/ROTand caves ofהָאָרֶץ׃ha/A/retsthe earth

    (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

39. 39

    וְכׇל־אֵלֶּהve/KHOL-EL/leand all theseאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהִשִּׂיגוּhis/SI/guattainedשֵׁמַעSHE/maa reportטוֹבtovgoodבָּאֱמוּנָהba/e/mu/NAby faithלֹאlonotלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUreceivedאֶת־הַהַבְטָחָה׃et-ha/hav/ta/CHAthe promise

    And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:

40. 40

    כִּיkiforאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodרָאָהra/AforesawלָנוּLA/nufor usטוֹבָהto/VAsomething goodיְתֵרָהye/te/RAmoreלְמַעַןle/MA/ansoאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatהֵםhemtheyבִּלְעָדֵינוּbil/a/de/NUwithout usלֹאlonotיֻשְׁלָמוּ׃yush/la/MUmay be made complete

    God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
