1. 1

   וַיָּבֹאNow-when-was-comeפֶסְטוֹסFestusאֶל־הַמְּדִינָהinto-the-province,וַיַּעַלhe-ascendedאַחֲרֵיafterשְׁלֹשֶׁתthreeיָמִיםdaysמִקֵּיסַרְיָהfrom-Caesareaלִירוּשָׁלָיִם׃to-Jerusalem.

   Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Cæsarea to Jerusalem.

2. 2

   וְהַכֹּהֵןThen-the-priestהַגָּדוֹלhighוְרָאשֵׁיand-the-chief-ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe-Jewsהוֹדִיעֻהוּinformed-himאֶת־רִיבָםof-their-causeעִם־פּוֹלוֹס׃against-Paul,

   Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,

   וַיִּפְצְרוּ־בוֹAnd-besought-him,וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּand-desiredמִמֶּנּוּof-himלַעֲשׂוֹתto-doחֶסֶדfavorעִמָּהֶםagainst-him,לַהֲבִיאוֹthat-he-would-send-for-himיְרוּשָׁלָיִםto-Jerusalem,וְהֵמָּהwhile-theyמִתְנַכְּלִיםlaying-waitאֹתוֹfor-himלַהֲמִיתוֹto-kill-himבַּדָּרֶךְ׃in-the-way.

   And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.

4. 4

   וַיַּגֵּדBut-answeredלָהֶםthem,פֶּסְטוֹסFestusכִּי־עָצוּרthat-should-be-keptפּוֹלוֹסPaulקֵיסַרְיָהat-Caesarea,וְגַם־הוּאand-that-he-himselfיָשׁוּבwould-departשָׁמָּהthitherבְּקָרוֹב׃shortly.

   But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Cæsarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither.

   וַיֹּאמֶרsaid-he,לָכֵןLet-them-therefore,יֵרְדוּgo-downאִתִּיwith-me,הָעֲצוּמִיםwhich-are-ableשֶׁבָּכֶםamong-you,וְאִם־יֵשׁand-if-there-beמְאוּםany-wickednessבָּאִישׁin-manהַזֶּהthis,יַעֲנוּlet-them-accuseבוֹ׃him.

   Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me, and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him.

6. 6

   וַיֵּשֶׁבAnd-when-he-had-tarriedבְּתוֹכָםamong-themלֹאnotיוֹתֵרmoreמִיָּמִיםthan-daysשְׁמֹנָהeightאוֹorעֲשָׂרָהten,וַיֵּרֶדhe-went-downאֶל־קֵיסַרְיָהunto-Caesarea;וּמִמׇּחֳרָתand-the-next-dayיָשַׁבsittingעַל־כִּסֵּאon-the-seat-ofהַמִּשְׁפָּטjudgmentוַיְצַוcommandedלְהָבִיאto-be-brought.אֶת־פּוֹלוֹס׃Paul

   And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Cæsarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought.

   הוּאwhen-heבָאwas-come,וְהַיְּהוּדִיםthe-Jewsאֲשֶׁרwhichיָרְדוּcame-downמִירוּשָׁלַיִםfrom-Jerusalemסְבָבֻהוּstood-round-about-him,וַיַּאֲשִׁימוּand-laid-againstאֶת־פּוֹלוֹסPaulאֲשָׁמוֹתcomplaintsרַבּוֹתmanyוְקָשׁוֹתand-grievousאֲשֶׁרwhichלֹא־יָכְלוּthey-could-notלְהָבִיאbringרְאָיָהproveעֲלֵיהֶן׃of-them.

   And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.

8. 8

   וְהוּאWhile-heהִצְטַדֵּקanswered-for-himself,לֵאמֹרsaying,לֹא־חָטָאתִיhave-I-offendedבִמְאוּמָהany-thing-at-all,לֹאNeitherלְדָתagainst-the-law-ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe-Jews,וְלֹאneitherלַמִּקְדָּשׁagainst-the-temple,וְלֹאnor-yetלְקֵיסָר׃against-Caesar,

   While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Cæsar, have I offended any thing at all.

9. 9

   וּפֶסְטוֹסBut-Festus,בְּחֶפְצוֹwillingלְהַרְאוֹתto-doחֶסֶדa-pleasure,אֶל־הַיְּהוּדִיםthe-Jewsוַיַּעַןansweredאֶת־פּוֹלוֹסPaul,וַיֹּאמַרand-said,הֲתַחְפֹּץWill-youלַעֲלוֹתgo-upיְרוּשָׁלַיִםto-Jerusalem,לְהִשָּׁפֵטand-be-judgedעַל־אֵלֶּהof-these-thingsלְפָנַיbefore-meשָׁמָּה׃there?

   But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?

10. 10

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen-saidפּוֹלוֹסPaul,לִפְנֵיatכִּסֵּאthe-seat-ofמִשְׁפָּטוֹjudgmentשֶׁל־קֵיסַרof-CaesarאֲנִיIעֹמֵדstand,וְשָׁםwhereאֶהְיֶהI-oughtנִדּוֹןto-be-judged:לֹאnoהֲרֵעֹתִיhave-I-done-wrong,לַיְּהוּדִיםto-the-Jewsכַּאֲשֶׁרasיָדַעְתָּknowestהֵיטֵבvery-wellגַּם־אָתָּה׃you-also.

    Then said Paul, I stand at Cæsar's judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.

11. 11

    אִם־הֲרֵעֹתִיFor-if-I-be-an-offender,וְיֶשׁ־בִּיor-have-committedדְּבַרany-thing-ofמִשְׁפַּט־מָוֶתworthy-of-death,בַּל־אֶחְשׂךְI-refuse-notנַפְשִׁיmy-lifeמִמָּוֶתto-die:וְאִם־אֵין־בִּיbut-if-there-be-none-in-meדָבָרthingמִכֹּלof-theseאֲשֶׁרwhereofהֵםtheseעֹנִיםaccuseבִּיme,אִישׁmanלֹאnoיוּכַלmayלְהַסְגִּירֵנִיdeliver-meאֶל־יָדָםunto-them.אֶת־קֵיסַרunto-CaesarאֲנִיIקוֹרֵאappealלְדִינִי׃for-my-judgment.

    For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Cæsar.

12. 12

    וַיִּוָעַץThen-when-he-had-conferredפֶּסְטוֹסFestus,עִם־יוֹעֲצָיוwith-the-council,וַיַּעַןansweredאֹתוֹhim,לֵאמֹרsaying,אֶת־קֵיסַרunto-Caesar?קָרָאָתHave-you-appealedאֶל־קֵיסַרunto-Caesarתֵּלֵךְ׃shall-you-go.

    Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Cæsar? unto Cæsar shalt thou go.

13. 13

    וַיְהִיAnd-it-came-to-passמִקֵּץafterיָמִיםcertain-daysוַיֵּרְדוּcameאַגְרִפַּסAgrippaהַמֶּלֶךְkingוּבֶרְנִיקָהand-Berniceאֶל־קֵיסַרְיָהunto-Caesareaלִשְׁאֹלto-saluteלְפֶסְטוֹסFestusלְשָׁלוֹם׃with-peace.

    And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Cæsarea to salute Festus.

14. 14

    וַיְהִיAnd-it-came-to-passכִּי־אָרְכוּwhen-had-been-manyלָהֶםto-themהַיָּמִיםthe-daysשָׁםthere,וַיְסַפֵּרdeclaredפֶּסְטוֹסFestusלַמֶּלֶךְunto-the-kingאֶת־רִיבthe-cause-ofפּוֹלוֹסPaul,לֵאמֹרsaying,הִנֵּהThere-isאִישׁa-manאָסוּרleft-in-bondsבַּמָּקוֹםin-placeהַזֶּהthis,אֲשֶׁרwhichפִּילִיכַסFelixהִשְׁאִירוֹleftאַחֲרָיו׃after-him:

    And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul's cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:

15. 15

    וּבִהְיוֹתִיAnd-when-I-wasבִירוּשָׁלַיִםat-Jerusalem,דִּבְּרוּinformedאֵלַיme,רָאשֵׁיthe-chiefהַכֹּהֲנִיםpriestsוְזִקְנֵיand-the-elders-ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe-Jewsעַל־אֹדוֹתָיוabout-him,וַיְבַקְשׁוּdesiringמִמֶּנִּיof-meלְהַרְשִׁיעוּ׃to-have-judgment-against-him.

    About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judgment against him.

16. 16

    וָאֹמַרTo-whom-I-answeredאֲלֵיהֶםto-them,כִּיthatאֵיןIt-is-notדֶּרֶךְthe-manner-ofהָרוֹמִיִּיםthe-Romansלְהַסְגִּירto-deliverאִישׁany-manבְּטֶרֶםbefore-thatיַעֲמֹדhaveהַנִּטְעָןhe-which-is-accusedבִּפְנֵיface-to-faceטֹעֲנָיוthe-accusers,וְנִתַּן־לוֹand-have-licenceמָקוֹםplaceלְהִצְטַדֵּקto-answer-for-himselfמִן־הַשִּׂטְנָה׃concerning-the-crime-laid-against-him.

    To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.

17. 17

    וְלָכֵןTherefore,כַּאֲשֶׁרwhenבָּאוּthey-were-comeהֵנָּהhither,חַשְׁתִּיI-made-hasteוְלֹאwithoutהִתְמַהְמָהְתִּיany-delayכִּיforמִמׇּחֳרַתon-the-morrow-ofהַיּוֹםthe-dayיָשַׁבְתִּיI-satעַל־כִּסֵּאon-the-seat-ofהַמִּשְׁפַּטjudgment,וָאֲצַוֶּהand-commandedלְהָבִיאto-be-brought-forth.אֶת־הָאִישׁ׃the-man

    Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.

18. 18

    וַיַּעַמְדוּAnd-when-stood-up,שׂטְנָיוthe-accusersוְלֹא־הִגִּידוּthey-brought-noneעָלָיוagainst-himדָּבָרaccusationרָעevilמִמַּה־שֶּׁחֲשַׁדְתִּיוof-such-things-as-I-supposedבּוֹ׃of-him:

    Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:

19. 19

    וְרַקButהָיוּhadלָהֶםtheyדִּבְרֵיcertain-questions-ofרִיבֹתquestionsעָלָיוagainst-himבְּעִנְיַןofעֲבוֹדַתthe-worship-ofאֱלֹהֵיהֶםtheir-own-superstition,וְעַל־מֵתand-of-one-which-was-dead,אֶחָדoneיֵשׁוּעַJesusשְׁמוֹnamed,אֲשֶׁרwhomאָמַרaffirmedעָלָיוof-himפּוֹלוֹסPaulכִּיthatהוּאhe-wasחָי׃alive.

    But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.

20. 20

    וַיִּפָּלֵאAnd-because-doubtedמִמֶּנִּיIהַדָּבָרof-manner-of-questionsהַזֶּהsuchלַמִּשְׁפָּטfor-the-judgment,וָאֹמַרI-askedהֶחָפֵץwhether-wouldאַתָּהheלָלֶכֶתgoיְרוּשָׁלַיִםto-Jerusalem,וּלְהִשָּׁפֵטand-be-judgedשָׁםthereעַל־אֵלֶּה׃of-these-matters.

    And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.

21. 21

    וַיִּשְׁאַלBut-when-had-appealedפּוֹלוֹסPaulלְהַנִּיחוֹto-be-reservedבַמִּשְׁמָרin-wardעַד־צֵאתuntoמִשְׁפָּטוֹthe-hearing-of-his-causeמִלִּפְנֵיbeforeאֲגוּסְטוֹסAugustus,וָאֲצַוֶּהI-commandedלְשׇׁמְרוֹhim-to-be-keptעַד־אֲשֶׁרtillאֶשְׁלַחI-might-sendאֹתוֹhimאֶל־קֵיסָר׃to-Caesar.

    But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Cæsar.

22. 22

    וַיֹּאמֶרThen-saidאַגְרִפַּסAgrippaאֶל־פֶּסְטוֹסunto-Festus,גַּם־אֲנִיI-alsoחָפֵץwouldלִשְׁמֹעַhearאֶת־הָאִישׁthe-manוַיֹּאמֶרsaid-he,מָחָרTo-morrow,תִּשְׁמָעֶנּוּ׃you-shall-hear-him.

    Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.

23. 23

    וַיְהִיAnd-it-came-to-passמִמׇּחֳרָתon-the-morrow,כְּבוֹאwhen-was-come,אַגְרִפַּסAgrippaוּבֶרְנִיקָהand-Bernice,בְּהוֹדwith-pompגָּדוֹלgreat,וַיָּבֹאוּand-was-enteredאֶל־אֻלָםinto-the-place-ofהַמִּשְׁמַעַתhearing,הֵמָּהtheyוְשָׂרֵיwith-the-captains-ofהָאֶלֶףthe-chief,וּנְגִידֵיand-principal-men-ofהָעִירthe-city,וַיְצַוat-the-commandment-ofפֶּסְטוֹסFestusוַיָּבִיאוּwas-brought-forth.אֶת־פּוֹלוֹס׃Paul

    And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus' commandment Paul was brought forth.

24. 24

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd-said,פֶּסְטוֹסFestusאַגְרִפַּסAgrippa,הַמֶּלֶךְKingוְכׇל־הָאֲנָשִׁיםand-all-menאֲשֶׁרwhichאַתֶּםareפֹּהhere-presentאִתָּנוּwith-us,הִנְּכֶםbehold-youרֹאִיםseeאֶת־הָאִישׁmanאֲשֶׁרthis,-about-whomבַּעֲבוּרוֹfor-his-sakeפָּגְעוּ־בִיhave-dealt-with-me,כׇּל־הֲמוֹןall-the-multitude-ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe-Jewsגַּם־בִּירוּשָׁלַיִםboth-at-Jerusalem,וְגַם־פֹּהand-also-here,וַיִּזְעֲקוּcryingשֶׁלּאthat-notרָאוּיhe-oughtלוֹfor-himשֶׁיִּחְיֶהto-liveעוֹד׃any-longer.

    And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.

25. 25

    וַאֲנִיand-IכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenהִכַּרְתִּיI-recognizedבוֹin-himשֶׁלּא־עָשָׂהthat-not-he-didדָבָרthingשֶׁיִּהְיֶהthat-he-shall-beעָלָיוupon-himחַיַּבworthy-ofמִיתָהdeathוְגַם־הוּאand-also-it-isקָרָאcalledאֶת־אֲגוּסְטוֹסAugustusלְדִינוֹto-judgeיָעַצְתִּיI-have-purposedלִשְׁלֹחַlayאֹתוֹhimשָׁמָּה׃there

    But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.

26. 26

    אַךְbutאֵין־לִיI-have-noלִכְתֹּבto-writeעָלָיוof-himדָּבָרthingנָכוֹןcertainלַאֲדֹנֵינוּunto-my-lord.וּבַעֲבוּרWhereforeזֹאתfor-thisהֲבִיאֹתִיוI-have-brought-him-forthלִפְנֵיכֶםbefore-you,וּבְיוֹתֵרand-speciallyלְפָנֶיךָbefore-you,הַמֶּלֶךְO-kingאַגְרִפַּסAgrippa,לְמַעַןthat,יֵחָקֵרafter-examination-had,וְיָדַעְתִּיI-might-haveמָהsomewhatאֶכְתֹּב׃to-write.

    Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write.

27. 27

    כִּיForלֹא־יִתָּכֵןit-seemeth-unreasonableבְּעֵינַיto-meלִשְׁלוֹחַto-sendאַסִּירa-prisoner,וְלֹאand-notאוֹדִיעַwithal-to-signifyגַּםalsoאֶת־עֲלִילֹתthe-crimes-ofהַדְּבָרִיםthe-chargesאֲשֶׁר־שָׂמוּlaid-againstלוֹ׃him.

    For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him.
