   And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

   And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

   Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

   And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?

   וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidפּוֹלוֹסPo/LOSPaulאַחַיa/CHAYmy brothersלֹאlonotיָדַעְתִּיya/DA/tiI knewאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatהוּאhuhe wasהַכֹּהֵןhak/ko/HENthe priestהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLhighכִּיkiforכָתוּבkha/TUVit is writtenנָשִׂיאna/SIa rulerבְעַמְּךָve/am/me/KHAof your peopleלֹאlonotתְקַלֵּל׃te/kal/LELyou shall revile

   Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

   But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

   And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.

   כִּיkiforהַצַּדּוּקִיםhats/Tsad/du/KIMthe Sadduceesאֹמְרִיםom/RIMsayאֵיןenthere is noתְּחִיָּהte/chiy/YAresurrectionוְאֵיןve/ENand noמַלְאָךְmal/AKHangelוָרוּחַva/RU/achand spiritוְהַפְּרוּשִׁיםve/hap/Pe/ru/SHIMand the Phariseesמוֹדִיםmo/DIMacknowledgeבִּשְׁנֵיהֶם׃bish/ne/HEMboth of them

   For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

   וַתְּהִיvat/te/HIand there wasהֲמֻלָּהha/mul/LAan uproarגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatוַיָּקוּמוּvay/ya/KU/muand aroseהַסּוֹפְרִיםhas/sof/RIMthe scribesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wereמִכַּתmik/KATof the party ofהַפְּרוּשִׁיםhap/Pe/ru/SHIMthe Phariseesוַיִּתְוַכְּחוּ־לֵאמֹרvay/yit/vak/ke/CHU-le/MORand contended sayingלֹא־מָצָאנוּlo-ma/TSA/nuwe have not foundדָבָרda/VARa thingרַעraevilבָּאִישׁba/ISHin the manהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוְאִם־רוּחַve/IM-RU/achand if a spiritדִּבֶּרdib/BERspokeאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himאוֹoorמַלְאָךְmal/AKHan angelאַל־נִלָּחֲמָהal-nil/la/cha/MAlet us not fightבֵּאלֹהִים׃be/lo/HIMagainst God

   And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

    וְהָרִיבve/ha/RIVand the disputeהוֹלֵךְho/LEKHgoing onוְחָזֵקve/cha/ZEKand growing strongוְשַׂר־הָאֶלֶףve/SAR-ha/E/lefand the captain of the thousandיָרֵאya/REfearingפֶּן־יְשַׁסְּעוּpen-ye/shas/se/Ulest they tear apartאֶת־פּוֹלוֹסet-Po/LOSPaulוַיְצַוvay/TSAVcommandedאֶת־אַנְשֵׁיet-an/SHEthe men ofהַצָּבָאhats/tsa/VAthe armyלָרֶדֶתla/RE/detto go downוְלַחֲטֹףve/la/cha/TOFand to snatchאֹתוֹo/TOhimמִתּוֹכָםmit/to/KHAMfrom among themוְלַהֲבִיאוֹve/la/ha/vi/Oand to bring himאֶל־הַמְצָד׃el-ham/TSADinto the fortress

    And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.

11. 11

    וְהָאָדוֹןve/ha/a/DONand the Lordנִצָּבnits/TSAVstoodעָלָיוa/LAYVby himבַּלַּיְלָהbal/LAY/lain the nightהַהוּאha/HUthatוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidחֲזַקcha/ZAKbe strongפּוֹלוֹסPo/LOSPaulכִּיkiforכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasהַעִידוֹתָha/i/do/TAyou have testifiedלִּיliof meבִּירוּשָׁלַיִםbI/ru/sha/LA/yimin Jerusalemכֵּןkensoהָעֵדha/EDtestifyתָּעִידta/IDyou must testifyבְּרוֹמִי׃be/Ro/MIin Rome

    And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passלִפְנוֹתlif/NOTat the turning ofהַבֹּקֶרhab/BO/kerthe morningוַיִּתְחַבְּרוּvay/yit/chab/be/RUand joined togetherהַיְּהוּדִיםhay/Ye/hu/DIMthe Jewsוַיַּאַסְרוּvay/ya/as/RUand boundאִסָּרis/SARa bondעַל־נַפְשָׁםal-naf/SHAMon their soulאִםimnotיֹאכְלוּyo/khe/LUwould they eatוְאִםve/IMand notיִשְׁתּוּyish/TUdrinkעַדaduntilאִם־יַהַרְגוּim-ya/har/GUthey killedאֶת־פּוֹלוֹס׃et-Po/LOSPaul

    And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

13. 13

    וְהַבָּאִיםve/hab/ba/IMand those who enteredבָּאָלָהba/a/LAinto the oathהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisהָיוּha/YUwereיוֹתֵרyo/TERmoreמֵאַרְבָּעִיםme/ar/ba/IMthan fortyאִישׁ׃ishmen

    And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.

14. 14

    וַיִּגְּשׁוּvay/yig/ge/SHUand they came nearאֶל־רָאשֵׁיel-ra/SHEto the chiefs ofהַכֹּהֲנִיםhak/ko/ha/NIMthe priestsוְאֶלve/ELand toהַזְּקֵנִיםhaz/ze/ke/NIMthe eldersלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאִסָּרis/SARa bondאָסַרְנוּa/sar/NUwe have boundעַל־נַפְשֵׁנוּal-naf/SHE/nuon our soulלְבִלְתִּיle/vil/TInotטְעֹםte/OMto tasteמְאוּמָהme/U/maanythingעַדaduntilאִם־הָרַגְנוּim-ha/rag/NUwe have killedאֶת־פּוֹלוֹס׃et-Po/LOSPaul

    And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.

15. 15

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהוֹדִיעוּ־נָאho/DI/u-namake known nowאַתֶּםat/TEMyouוְסַנְהֶדְרִיןve/San/hed/RINand the Sanhedrinאֶת־שַׂרet-sarto the captain ofהָאֶלֶףha/E/lefthe thousandוְיוֹרִידֵהוּve/yo/ri/de/HUthat he bring him downמָחָרma/CHARtomorrowאֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMto youכְּאִלּוּke/il/LUas thoughתַחְפְּצוּtach/pe/TSUyou wishedלַחֲקֹרla/cha/KORto investigateעָלָיוa/LAYVabout himהֵיטֵבhe/TEVthoroughlyוַאֲנַחְנוּva/a/NACH/nuand weנְכוֹנִיםne/kho/NIMare readyלַהֲמִיתוֹla/ha/mi/TOto kill himבְּטֶרֶםbe/TE/rembeforeיִקְרַבyik/RAVhe comes nearאֲלֵיכֶם׃a/le/KHEMto you

    Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would inquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

16. 16

    וַיִּשְׁמַעvay/yish/MAand heardבֶּן־אֲחוֹתben-a/CHOTthe son of the sister ofפּוֹלוֹסPo/LOSPaulאֶת־אָרְבָּםet-ar/BAMtheir ambushוַיֵּלֶךְvay/YE/lekhhe wentוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameאֶל־הַמְצָדel-ham/TSADinto the fortressוַיַּגֵּדvay/yag/GEDand toldלְפוֹלוֹס׃Le/fo/LOSPaul

    And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.

17. 17

    וַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand calledפוֹלוֹסFo/LOSPaulלְאֶחָדle/e/CHADoneמִשָּׂרֵיmis/sa/REof the captains ofהַמֵּאוֹתham/me/OTthe hundredsוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himקַחkachtakeאֶת־הַבָּחוּרet-hab/ba/CHURthe young manהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisאֶל־שַׂרel-sarto the captain ofהָאֶלֶףha/E/lefthe thousandכִּי־דָבָרki-da/VARfor a thingלוֹlohe hasלְהוֹדִיעוֹ׃le/ho/di/Oto tell him

    Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

    וַיִּקָּחֵהוּvay/yik/ka/CHE/huand took himוַיְבִיאֵהוּvay/vi/E/huand he brought himאֶל־שַׂרel-sarto the captain ofהָאֶלֶףha/E/lefthe thousandוַיֹּאמַרvay/yo/MARand saidפּוֹלוֹסPo/LOSPaulהָאַסִּירha/as/SIRthe prisonerקְרָאַנִיke/ra/a/NIcalled meאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himוַיְבַקֵּשׁvay/vak/KESHand askedמִמֶּנִּיmim/MEN/niof meלְהָבִיאle/ha/VIto bringאֵלֶיךָe/LE/khato youאֶת־הַבָּחוּרet-hab/ba/CHURthe young manהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisכִּי־דָבָרki-da/VARfor a thingלוֹlohe hasלְהַגִּידle/hag/GIDto sayלָךְ׃lakhto you

    So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.

19. 19

    וַיֹּאחֶזvay/YO/chezand took hold ofשַׂרsarthe captain ofהָאֶלֶףha/E/lefthe thousandבְּיָדוֹbe/ya/DOhis handוַיָּסַרvay/YA/sarand turned asideעִמּוֹim/MOwith himלְבַדּוֹle/vad/DOaloneוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVto himמָהmawhatהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARis the thingאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatתּוֹדִיעֵנִי׃to/di/e/NIyou will tell me

    Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?

20. 20

    וַיֹּאמַרvay/yo/MARand he saidכִּי־נוֹעֲצוּki-no/a/TSUhave agreedהַיְּהוּדִיםhay/Ye/hu/DIMthe Jewsיַחְדָּוyach/DAVtogetherלְבַקֶּשׁle/vak/KESHto askמִמְּךָmim/me/KHAof youלְהוֹרִידle/ho/RIDto bring downאֶת־פּוֹלוֹסet-Po/LOSPaulמָחָרma/CHARtomorrowלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeסַנְהֶדְרִיןSan/hed/RINthe Sanhedrinכְּאִלּוּke/il/LUas thoughחֲפֵצִיםcha/fe/TSIMthey wishedלָדַעַתla/DA/atto knowהֵיטֵבhe/TEVthoroughlyאֶת־עִנְיָנוֹ׃et-in/ya/NOhis matter

    And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would inquire somewhat of him more perfectly.

    וְאַתָּהve/at/TAand youאַל־תִּשְׁמַעal-tish/MAdo not listenלָהֶםla/HEMto themכִּיkiforאֹרְבִיםor/VIMare lying in waitלוֹlofor himמֵהֶםme/HEMof themיוֹתֵרyo/TERmoreמֵאַרְבָּעִיםme/ar/ba/IMthan fortyאִישׁishmenאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoאָסְרוּa/se/RUhave boundאִסָּרis/SARa bondעַל־נַפְשָׁםal-naf/SHAMon their soulלְבִלְתִּיle/vil/TInotאֲכֹלa/KHOLto eatוּשְׁתוֹתu/she/TOTand drinkעַדadtillאִם־הֱמִיתֻהוּim-he/mi/tu/HUthey have killed himוְהֵמָּהve/HEM/maand theyעַתָּהat/TAnowעֹמְדִיםom/DIMare standingוּמְחַכִּיםu/me/chak/KIMand waitingלִדְבָרֶךָ׃lid/va/RE/khafor your word

    But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.

    וַיְשַׁלַּחvay/shal/LACHand sent awayשַׂר־הָאֶלֶףsar-ha/E/lefthe captain of the thousandאֶת־הַבָּחוּרet-hab/ba/CHURthe young manוַיְצַוvay/TSAVand commandedעָלָיוa/LAYVhimאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹאlonotיַגִּידyag/GIDhe tellלְאִישׁle/ISHanyoneכִּיkithatגִּלָּה־לוֹgil/LA-lohe had revealed to himאֶת־הַדָּבָרet-had/da/VARthe thingהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.

23. 23

    וַיִּקְרָאvay/yik/RAand he calledלִשְׁנֵיlish/NEtwoשָׂרֵיsa/REcaptains ofמֵאוֹתme/OThundredsוַיֹּאמַרvay/yo/MARand saidהֵחָלְצוּhe/cha/le/TSUarmמֵאִתְּכֶםme/it/te/KHEMfrom among youאַנְשֵׁי־צָבָאan/SHE-tsa/VAsoldiersמָאתַיִםma/TA/yimtwo hundredלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto goלְקֵיסַרְיָהle/Ke/sar/YAto Caesareaוּפָרָשִׁיםu/fa/ra/SHIMand horsemenשִׁבְעִיםshiv/IMseventyוּמֹשְׁכֵיu/mosh/KHEand drawers ofקֶשֶׁתKE/shetbowמָאתַיִםma/TA/yimtwo hundredסוֹף־הַשָּׁעָהsof-hash/sha/Aat the end of the hourהַשְּׁלִישִׁיתhash/she/li/SHITthirdבַּלַּיְלָה׃bal/LAY/lain the night

    And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Cæsarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;

    וּבְהֵמוֹתu/ve/he/MOTand animalsיָכִינוּya/khi/NUlet them provideלְהַרְכִּיבle/har/KIVto mountאֶת־פּוֹלוֹסet-Po/LOSPaulלְמַעַןle/MA/anso thatהֲבִיאוֹha/vi/Othey bring himשָׁלֵםsha/LEMsafeאֶל־פִילִיכַסel-Fi/li/KHASto Felixהַהֶגְמוֹן׃ha/heg/MONthe governor

    And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.

    וַיִּכְתֹּבvay/yikh/TOVand he wroteאִגֶּרֶתig/GE/reta letterוּבָהּu/VAand in itכַּדְּבָרִיםkad/de/va/RIMlike the wordsהָאֵלֶּה׃ha/EL/lethese

    And he wrote a letter after this manner:

    קְלוֹדְיוֹסKe/lod/YOSClaudiusלוּסִיאַסLu/si/ASLysiasלְפִילִיכַסle/Fi/li/KHASto Felixהַהֶגְמוֹןha/heg/MONthe governorהָאַדִּירha/ad/DIRthe most excellentשָׁלוֹם׃sha/LOMpeace

    Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting.

27. 27

    אֶת־הָאִישׁet-ha/ISHthe manהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisתָּפְשׂוּTAF/suseizedהַיְּהוּדִיםhay/Ye/hu/DIMthe Jewsוַיְבַקְשׁוּvay/vak/SHUand soughtהֲמִיתוֹha/mi/TOto kill himוָאָבֹאva/a/VOand I cameעִם־אַנְשֵׁיim-an/SHEwith the men ofהַצָּבָאhats/tsa/VAthe armyוָאֲפַלְּטֵהוּva/a/fal/le/te/HUand rescued himמִתּוֹכָםmit/to/KHAMfrom among themבְּשׇׁמְעִיbe/shom/Iwhen I heardכִּי־רוֹמִיki-Ro/MIthat a Romanהוּא׃huhe was

    This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.

    וּבַאֲשֶׁרu/va/a/SHERand sinceחָפַצְתִּיcha/FATS/tiI wishedלָדַעַתla/DA/atto knowעַל־מֶהal-mefor whatשָׂטְנוּsa/te/NUthey accusedאֹתוֹo/TOhimהוֹרַדְתִּיוho/rad/TIVI brought him downאֶל־הַסַּנְהֶדְרִיןel-Has/san/hed/RINto the Sanhedrinאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלָהֶם׃la/HEMto them

    And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:

    וָאֵדַעva/e/DAand I foundכִּי־שָׂטְנוּki-sa/te/NUthat they accusedאֹתוֹo/TOhimעַל־דִּבְרֵיal-div/REabout matters ofשְׁאֵלוֹתshe/e/LOTquestions ofדָּתָםda/TAMtheir lawוְלֹאve/LOand notעַל־דָּבָרal-da/VARabout a thingאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichיִהְיֶהyih/YEwould beעָנְשׁוֹa/ne/SHOits penaltyעָלָיוa/LAYVupon himמָוֶתMA/vetdeathאוֹoorמוֹסֵרוֹת׃mo/se/ROTbonds

    Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdהֻגַּד־לִיhug/GAD-liit was told meכִּיkihow thatהַיְּהוּדִיםhay/Ye/hu/DIMthe Jewsמִתְנַכְּלִיםmit/nak/ke/LIMare plottingבָּאִישׁba/ISHagainst the manהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוָאֶשְׁלָחֵהוּva/esh/la/che/HUand I sent himאֵלֶיךָe/LE/khato youמְהֵרָהme/he/RAquicklyוְגַםve/GAMand alsoאֶת־שֹׂטְנָיוet-sot/NAYVhis accusersצִוֵּיתִיtsiv/VE/tiI commandedלָבוֹאla/VOto comeוּלְהַגִּישׁu/le/hag/GISHand to presentשִׂטְנָתָםsit/na/TAMtheir accusationלְפָנֶיךָle/fa/NE/khabefore youוְאַתָּהve/at/TAand youשָׁלוֹם׃sha/LOMpeace

    And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell.

    וַיִּקְחוּvay/yik/CHUand tookאַנְשֵׁיan/SHEthe men ofהַצָּבָאhats/tsa/VAthe armyאֶת־פּוֹלוֹסet-Po/LOSPaulכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasצֻוּוּtsuv/VUthey were commandedוַיְבִיאֻהוּvay/vi/U/huand brought himלַיְלָהLAY/laby nightאֶל־אַנְטִפַּטְרִיס׃el-An/tip/pat/RISto Antipatris

    Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.

32. 32

    וּמִמׇּחֳרָתu/mim/mo/cho/RATand on the next dayהִנִּיחוּhin/NI/chuthey leftאֶת־הַפָּרָשִׁיםet-hap/pa/ra/SHIMthe horsemenלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto goאִתּוֹit/TOwith himוַיָּשׁוּבוּvay/ya/SHU/vuand returnedלַמְצָד׃lam/TSADto the fortress

    On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:

    וְאֵלֶּהve/EL/leand theseבָּאוּBA/ucameאֶל־קֵיסַרְיָהel-Ke/sar/YAto Caesareaוַיִּתְּנוּvay/yit/te/NUand gaveאֶת־הָאִגֶּרֶתet-ha/ig/GE/retthe letterבִּידֵיbi/DEinto the hands ofהַהֶגְמוֹןha/heg/MONthe governorוַיַּעֲמִידוּvay/ya/a/MI/duand they setלְפָנָיוle/fa/NAYVbefore himגַּםgamalsoאֶת־פּוֹלוֹס׃et-Po/LOSPaul

    Who, when they came to Cæsarea, and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passכִּקְרֹאkik/ROwhen readהַהֶגְמוֹןha/heg/MONthe governorאֶת־הָאִגֶּרֶתet-ha/ig/GE/retthe letterוַיִּשְׁאַלvay/yish/ALand he askedלָדַעַתla/DA/atto knowמֵאֵי־זֹהme/E-zofrom whichמְדִינָהme/di/NAprovinceהוּאhuhe wasוַיְהִיvay/HIand it came to passכְשׇׁמְעוֹkhe/shom/Owhen he heardכִּי־הוּאki-huthat he wasמִקִּילִיקְיָא׃mik/Ki/li/ke/YAfrom Cilicia

    And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia;

35. 35

    אֶשְׁמַעesh/MAI will hearאֶת־דְּבָרֶיךָet-de/va/RE/khayour wordsוַיֹּאמַרvay/yo/MARand saidבְּבוֹאbe/VOwhen comeגַם־שֹׂטְנֶיךָgam-sot/ne/KHAalso your accusersהֵנָּהHEN/nahereוַיְצַוvay/TSAVand he commandedלְשׇׁמְרוֹle/shom/ROto guard himבְּבֵיתbe/VETin the house ofהַמִּשְׁפָּטham/mish/PATthe judgmentאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthat wasלְהוֹרְדוֹס׃le/Hor/DOSof Herod

    I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.
