    וַיְהִיNow-it-came-to-passאַחֲרֵיwhenעָבְרָםthey-had-passed-throughבְּאַמְפִפּוֹלִיסAmphipolisוּבְאַפֹּלוֹנְיָאand-Apollonia,וַיָּבֹאוּthey-cameאֶל־תַּסְלוֹנִיקִיto-Thessalonica,וְשָׁםwhere-wasבֵּיתa-house-ofכְּנֵסֶתsynagogueלַיְּהוּדִים׃of-the-Jews:

    Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

    וּפוֹלוֹסAnd-Paul,נִכְנַסwent-inאֲלֵיהֶםunto-them,כְּמִשְׁפָּטוֹas-his-manner-was,וְשָׁלשׁand-threeשַׁבָּתוֹתsabbath-daysהִתְוַכַּחreasonedעִמָּהֶםwith-themמִן־הַמִּקְרָאוֹת׃out-of-the-scriptures,

    And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

    פָּתוֹחַOpeningוְהוֹכֵחַand-allegingלָהֶםto-them,כִּי־צָרִיךְthat-must-needsהָיָהhaveשֶׁיְּעֻנֶּהsuffered,הַמָּשִׁיחַChristוְיָקוּםand-risen-againמִן־הַמֵּתִיםfrom-the-dead;וְהוּאand-that-isהַמָּשִׁיחַChristיֵשׁוּעַthis-Jesus,אֲשֶׁרwhomאֲנִיIמַגִּידpreachלָכֶם׃unto-you.

    Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

    וַיַּאֲמִינוּAnd-believed,מִקְצָתָםsome-of-themוַיִּסָּפְחוּand-consortedעַל־פּוֹלוֹסwith-Paulוְסִילָאand-Silas;וְגַם־יִרְאֵיand-of-the-devoutאֱלֹהִיםtoward-Godמִן־הַיְּוָנִיםof-the-Greeksלָרֹבa-great-multitude,וְגַם־נָשִׁיםand-of-womenחֲשׁוּבוֹתthe-chiefלֹא־מְעָט׃not-a-few.

    And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

    וַיְקַנְאוּBut-moved-with-envy,הַסּוֹרֲרִיםwhich-believed-not,שֶׁבַּיְּהוּדִיםthe-Jewsוַיִּקְחוּtookלָהֶםunto-themאַנְשֵׁיcertain-fellows-ofבְלִיַּעַלlewdnessמִןofהַשּׁוּקthe-baser-sort,וַיְקַבְּצוּand-gatheredהָמוֹןa-company,וַיָּהֹמּוּand-set-on-an-uproarאֶת־הָעִירall-the-city,וַיָּסֹבּוּand-assaultedעַל־בֵּיתthe-house-ofיָסוֹןJason,וַיְבַקְשׁוּand-soughtלְהוֹצִיאָםto-bring-them-outאֶל־הָעָם׃to-the-people.

    But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

    וְלֹא־מָצְאוּAnd-when-they-found-notאוֹתָםthem,וַיִּסְחֲבוּthey-drewאֶת־יָסוֹןJasonוַאֲנָשִׁיםand-certainמִן־הָאַחִיםbrethrenלִפְנֵיuntoרָאשֵׁיthe-rulers-ofהָעִירthe-city,וַיִּצְעֲקוּcrying,לֵאֶמֹרsaying,הִנֵּהbeholdהַמַּדִּיחִיםThese-that-have-turned-upside-downאֶת־כׇּל־יֹשְׁבֵיall-the-dwellers-ofתֵבֵלthe-worldבָּאוּare-comeגַּם־הֲלוֹם׃hither-also;

    And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

    וְיָסוֹןWhom-Jasonאָסַףhath-receivedאֹתָםthemאֶל־בֵּיתוֹinto-his-house:וְהֵםand-theseכֻּלָּםallאֵינָםnotעֹשִׂיםdoאֶת־דָּתֵיthe-decrees-ofקֵיסַרCaesar,בְּאׇמְרָםsayingיֵשׁ־מֶלֶךְthat-there-is-kingאַחֵרanother,וְהוּאoneיֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus.

    Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

    וַיַּחֲרִידוּAnd-they-troubledאֶת־הָעָםthe-peopleוְאֶת־רָאשֵׁיand-the-rulers-ofהָעִירthe-city,אֲשֶׁרwhenשָׁמְעוּthey-heardאֶת־זֹאת׃these-things.

    And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

    וַיִּקְחוּAnd-when-they-had-takenעֵרָבוֹןsecurityמִידֵיof-the-hands-ofיָסוֹןJason,וּמִידֵיand-ofהַנִּשְׁאָרִיםthe-other,וַיְשַׁלְּחוּם׃they-let-them-go.

    And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

    וְהָאַחִיםAnd-the-brethrenמִהֲרוּimmediatelyלְהוֹלִיךְsent-awayאֶת־פּוֹלוֹסPaulוְאֶת־סִילָאand-Silasלַיְלָהby-nightלִבְרוֹאָהunto-Berea:וַיָּבֹאוּwho-comingשָׁמָּהthitherוַיֵּלְכוּwentלְבֵית־הַכְּנֵסֶתinto-the-house-of-the-synagogueלַיְּהוּדִים׃of-the-Jews.

    And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

    וְהֵםTheseהָיוּwereנְדִיבֵיmore-noble-ofרוּחַspiritמֵאַנְשֵׁיthan-those-inתַסְלוֹנִיקִיThessalonica,וַיְקַבְּלוּin-that-they-receivedאֶת־הַדָּבָרthe-wordבְּכׇל־לֵבwith-all-readiness-of-mind,וַיַּחְקְרוּand-searchedבַכְּתוּבִיםthe-scripturesיוֹםdailyיוֹםby-day,לָדַעַתto-knowאִם־כִּדְבָרָםwhether-those-thingsכֵּןsoהוּא׃were.

    These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

    וַיַּאֲמִינוּTherefore-believed;רַבִּיםmanyמֵהֶםof-themוְגַםalsoמִן־הַנָּשִׁיםof-womenהַיְּוָנִיּוֹתwhich-were-Greeks,הַיְּקָרוֹתhonorableוּמִן־הָאֲנָשִׁיםand-of-men,לֹא־מְעָט׃not-a-few.

    Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

    וַיְהִיBut-it-came-to-passכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenשָׁמְעוּhad-knowledgeהַיְּהוּדִיםthe-Jewsאֲשֶׁרwhich-wereמִתַּסְלוֹנִיקִיof-Thessalonicaכִּי־גַם־בִּבְרוֹאָהthat-also-at-Bereaפּוֹלוֹסof-Paul,מַשְׁמִיעַwas-preachedאֶת־דְּבַרthe-word-ofיְהוָֹהGodוַיָּבֹאוּthey-cameוַיְעֹרֲרוּand-stirred-upאֶת־הָעָםthe-peopleגַּם־שָׁמָּה׃thither-also.

    But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

    וַיְמַהֲרוּAnd-then-immediatelyהָאַחִיםthe-brethrenוַיְשַׁלְחוּsent-awayאֶת־פּוֹלוֹסPaulלָלֶכֶתto-goעַד־הַיָּםas-it-were-to-the-sea:וְסִילָאbut-Silasוְטִימוֹתִיּוֹסand-Timotheusנִשְׁאֲרוּabodeשָׁם׃there-still.

    And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

    וְהַמְלַוִּיםAnd-they-that-conductedאֶת־פּוֹלוֹסPaulהוֹלִיכֻהוּbrought-himעַד־אַתִּינַסunto-Athens:וְשָׁםand-thereצִוָּהreceiving-a-commandmentאֹתָםtheyלְהַגִּידto-tellלְסִילָאunto-Silasוְטִימוֹתִיּוֹסand-Timotheusכִּיthatיָבֹאוּthey-should-comeאֵלָיוto-himבִּמְהֵרָהwith-all-speed,וַיֵּלֵכוּ׃they-departed.

    And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

    וַיְהִיNow-it-came-to-passכַּאֲשֶׁרwhileחִכָּהwaitedלָהֶםfor-themפּוֹלוֹסPaulבְּאַתִּינַסat-Athens,וַיַּרְאwhen-he-sawוְהִנֵּהbeholdהָעִירthe-cityמְלֵאָהwholly-given-toאֱלִילִיםidolatry,וַתִּתְחַמֵּץwas-stirredרוּחוֹhis-spiritבְּקִרְבּוֹ׃in-him.

    Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

    עַל־כֵּןThereforeדִּבֶּרdisputed-heבְּבֵיתin-the-house-ofהַכְּנֵסֶתthe-synagogueעִם־הַיְּהוּדִיםwith-the-Jews,וְעִם־יִרְאֵיand-with-the-devout-towardאֱלֹהִיםGod,וּבַשּׁוּקand-in-the-marketיוֹםdailyיוֹםby-dayעִם־הַנִּקְרִיםwith-them-that-metאֵלָיו׃with-him.

    Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

    וְגַם־מִקְצָתThen-certain-ofהַפִילוֹסוֹפִיםthe-philosophersמִתַּלְמִידֵיof-the-disciples-ofבֵּיתthe-house-ofאַפִּיקוֹרוֹסthe-Epicureans,וּמִתַּלְמִידֵיand-of-the-disciples-ofבֵּיתthe-house-ofהָאִסְטְוָאthe-Stoicks,הִתְגָּרוּencounteredבוֹhim.וְיֵשׁAnd-someאֲשֶׁרwhichאָמְרוּsaid,מַה־יֹּאמַרWhat-will-say?הַמְּפַטְפֵּטbabblerהַלָּזthisוַאֲחֵרִיםother-some,אֹמְרִיםsaying,כִּמְדֻמֶּהHe-seemethשֶׁהוּאto-beמַגִּידa-setter-forth-ofאֱלֹהֵיgodsנֵכָרstrange:כִּי־בִשָּׂרbecause-he-preached-untoאֹתָםthemאֶת־יֵשׁוּעַJesus,וְאֵתandהַתְּחִיָּה׃the-resurrection.

    Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

    וַיֹּאחֲזוּהוּAnd-they-took-him,וַיְבִיאֻהוּand-brought-himאֶל־גִּבְעַתunto-the-hill-ofהַמִּשְׁפָּטjudgment,הַנִּקְרָאָהwhich-is-calledבְּשֵׁםby-the-nameאַרְיוֹפָגוֹסAreopagus,וַיֹּאמְרוּsaying,הֲנוּכַלMay-weלָדַעַתknowמָהwhatהַתּוֹרָהdoctrineהַחֲדָשָׁהnewהַזֹּאתthis,אֲשֶׁרwhereofאַתָּהyouמְלַמֵּד׃speakest,-is?

    And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

    כִּי־דְבָרִיםFor-thingsזָרִיםcertain-strangeאַתָּהyouמֵבִיאbringestבְאׇזְנֵינוּto-our-ears:וַחֲפֵצִיםand-wouldאֲנַחְנוּweלָדַעַתknowמָהwhat-meanהֵם׃these-things.

    For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

  21. 21

    כִּי(Forהָאַתִּינִיּיםthe-Atheniansכֻּלָּםallוְגַםand-alsoהַנָּכְרִיםthe-strangersהַגָּרִיםwhich-wereשָׁםthereלֹאin-nothing-elseפָנוּspent-their-time,כִּיbutאִםeitherלְסַפֵּרto-tell,חֲדָשׁוֹתsome-new-thingאוֹorלִשְׁמֹעַ׃to-hear.)

    (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

  22. 22

    וַיַּעֲמֹדThen-stoodפּוֹלוֹסPaulבְּתוֹךְin-the-midst-ofהַוַּעַדthe-councilשֶׁלofהַשֹּׁפְטִיםthe-judges,וַיֹּאמַרand-said,אַנְשֵׁיYou-men-ofאַתִּינַסAthens,הִנְנִיbehold-Iרֹאֶהperceiveבַכֹּלthat-in-all-thingsכִּיthatיִרְאֵיfearers-ofאֱלוֹהוֹתgodsאַתֶּםyou-areמְאֹד׃too-much.

    Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

    כִּיForאֲנִיas-Iעֹבֵרpassed-by,וּמִתְבּוֹנֵןand-beheldאֶל־עֲבֹדוֹתyour-devotions-ofאֱלֹהֵיכֶםyour-gods,וְהִנֵּהbeholdמִזְבֵּחַan-altarאֶחָדoneכָּתוּבwith-this-inscriptionעָלָיוupon-it,לָאֵלTO-THE-GODהַנֶּעְלָםUNKNOWN.וְעַתָּהthereforeאֶת־אֲשֶׁרWhomעֲבַדְתֶּםyou-worship,וְאֵינְכֶםand-notיֹדְעִיםignorantly-knowingאֹתוֹhimאֲנִיIמַגִּידdeclareלָכֶם׃unto-you.

    For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

  24. 24

    הָאֵלGodאֲשֶׁרthatעָשָׂהmadeאֶת־הָעוֹלָםthe-worldוְכֹלand-all-thingsאֲשֶׁר־בּוֹtherein,לֹאnotיִשְׁכֹּןdwellethבְּהֵיכָלוֹתin-templesמַעֲשֵׂהmade-withיָדָיִםhands;כִּיseeing-thatהוּאhe-isאֲדוֹןLord-ofהַשָּׁמַיִםheavenוְהָאָרֶץ׃and-earth,

    God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

    גַּם־לֹאNeitherיְשָׁרֲתוּהוּis-he-worshiped-withיְדֵיthe-hands-ofבְנֵי־אָדָםmen,כְּאִלּוּas-thoughיִצְטָרֵךְhe-neededלְדָבָרany-thing,כִּיseeingהוּאheהַנֹּתֵןgivethלַכֹּלto-allחַיִּיםlife,וּנְשָׁמָהand-breath,וְכׇל־דָּבָר׃and-all-things;

    Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

    וַיּוֹשֶׁבAnd-hath-made-to-dwellכׇּל־עַמְמֵיall-nations-ofבְנֵי־אָדָםmenמִדָּםof-bloodאֶחָדoneעַל־כׇּל־פְּנֵיon-all-the-face-ofהָאֲדָמָהthe-earth,וַיַּצֵּבand-hath-determinedזְמַנִּיםthe-timesקְבוּעִיםbefore-appointed,וּגְבוּלוֹתand-the-bounds-ofמוֹשָׁבָם׃their-habitation;

    And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

    לְמַעַןThatיְבַקְשׁוּthey-should-seekאֶת־הָאָדוֹןthe-Lord,אוּלַיif-haplyיְמַשְּׁשֻׁהוּthey-might-feel-after-him,וְיִמְצָאֻהוּand-find-him,אַףthoughכִּי־אֵינֶנּוּhe-be-notרָחוֹקfarמִכׇּל־אֶחָדfrom-every-oneמִמֶּנּוּ׃of-us:

    That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

    כִּי־בוֹFor-in-himאֲנַחְנוּweחַיִּיםlive,וּמִתְנוֹעֲעִיםand-move,וְקַיָּמִיםand-have-our-being;כַּאֲשֶׁרasגַּםalsoבִּמְשׁוֹרֲרֵיכֶםof-your-own-poetsיֵשׁcertainאֹמְרִיםhave-said,כִּי־יְלִידָיוFor-his-offspringאֲנָחְנוּ׃we-are-also.

    For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

    וְהִנֵּהthenבִּהְיוֹתֵנוּForasmuch-as-we-areיְלִידֵיthe-offspring-ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGod,לֹא־נָכוֹןwe-ought-notלָנוּfor-usלַחֲשֹׁבto-thinkשֶׁהָאֱלָהוּתthat-the-Godheadדּוֹמָהis-likeלַזָּהָבunto-gold,אוֹorלַכֶּסֶףsilver,אוֹorלָאָבֶןstone,מַעֲשֵׂהgraven-byחָרָשׁartוּמַחֲשֶׁבֶתand-device-ofבְּנֵיthe-sons-ofאָדָם׃man.

    Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

  30. 30

    לָכֵןAndעַתָּהnowאַחֲרֵיafterעֲבֹרwinked-atאֱלֹהִיםGodעַל־דֹרוֹתthe-times-ofהַסִּכְלוּתthis-ignorance;מְצַוֶּהcommandethהוּאheאֶת־כׇּל־בְּנֵיallהָאָדָםmenבְּכׇל־אַפְסֵי־אֶרֶץevery-whereלָשׁוּבto-repentאֵלָיו׃unto-him:

    And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

  31. 31

    יַעַןBecauseאֲשֶׁרthatקָבַע־יוֹםhe-hath-appointed-a-day,לִשְׁפֹּטin-the-which-he-will-judgeתֵּבֵלthe-worldבְּצֶדֶקin-righteousnessעַל־יְדֵיbyאִישׁthat-manאֲשֶׁרwhomהִפְקִידוֹhe-hath-ordained;וַיִּתֵּןwhereof-he-hath-givenאוֹתassuranceלְהַאֲמִיןto-believeלְכֻלָּםunto-all-men,בַּהֲקִימוֹin-that-he-hath-raisedאֹתוֹhimמִן־הַמֵּתִים׃from-the-dead.

    Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

    וְכַאֲשֶׁרAnd-whenשָׁמְעוּthey-heard-ofתְּחִיַּתthe-resurrection-ofמֵתִיםthe-dead,אֵלֶּהsomeהִלְעִיגוּmockedלוֹhim:וְאֵלֶּהand-othersאָמְרוּsaid,לַדָּבָרof-matterהַזֶּהthisנִשְׁמָעֲךָWe-will-hear-youזְמַןagainאַחֵר׃another-time.

    And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

    וּבְכֵןSoיָצָאdepartedפוֹלוֹסPaulמִתּוֹכָם׃from-among-them.

    So Paul departed from among them.

  34. 34

    וּמִקְצָתָםHowbeit-certain-menדָּבְקוּclaveבוֹunto-him,וַיַּאֲמִינוּand-believed:וּבָהֶםamong-the-which-wasדִּיּוֹנוּסְיוֹסDionysiusמִן־הַשֹּׁפְטִיםof-the-judgesשֶׁל־אַרְיוֹפָגוֹסthe-Areopagite,וְאִשָּׁהand-a-womanאַחַתoneדָּמָרִיסDamarisשְׁמָהּnamed,וְעוֹדandאֲחֵרִיםothersעִמָּהֶם׃with-them.

    Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
