    בָּעֵתNow-about-timeהַהִיאthatשָׁלַחstretched-forthהַמֶּלֶךְthe-kingהוֹרְדוֹסHerodאֶת־יָדוֹhis-handsלְהָרַעto-vexלַאֲנָשִׁיםcertainמִן־הַקָּהָל׃of-the-church.

    Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.

  2. 2

    וַיָּמֶתAnd-he-killedאֶת־יַעֲקֹבJamesאֲחִיthe-brother-ofיוֹחָנָןJohnבֶּחָרֶב׃with-the-sword.

    And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

  3. 3

    וַיַּרְאAnd-because-he-sawכִּי־טוֹבit-pleasedהַדָּבָרthe-thingבְּעֵינֵיin-the-eyes-ofהַיְּהוּדִיםthe-Jews,וַיּוֹסֶףhe-proceeded-furtherלִתְפֹּשׂto-takeגַּם־אֶת־פֶּטְרוֹסPeter-also.וְהַיָּמִים(Then-were-the-daysיְמֵיthe-days-ofחַג־הַמַּצּוֹת׃the-feast-of-unleavened-bread.)

    And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

    וַיֹּאחֶזAnd-when-he-had-apprehendedאֹתוֹhim,וַיִּתְּנֵהוּhe-put-himבְּמִשְׁמָרin-prison,וַיִּמְסְרֵהוּand-delivered-himלְאַרְבַּעto-fourמַחְלְקוֹתquaternionsשֶׁל־אַרְבָּעָהof-fourאַנְשֵׁיmen-ofצָבָאwarלְשׇׁמְרוֹto-keep-him;כִּיforאָמַרhe-intendedלְהַעֲלוֹתוֹto-bring-him-forthאַחֲרֵיafterהַפֶּסַחthe-passoverלִפְנֵיtoהָעָם׃the-people.

    And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

    פֶּטְרוֹסPeterהָיָהtherefore-wasעָצוּרkeptבְּמִשְׁמָרin-prison:וְהַקְּהִילָּהbut-the-churchהֶעְתִּירָהmade-prayerבַעֲדוֹfor-himבְּחׇזְקָהwithout-ceasingאֶל־הָאֱלֹהִים׃unto-God.

    Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

    וַיְהִיAnd-it-came-to-passבַלַּיְלָהthe-same-nightאֲשֶׁרwhenאָמַרwouldהוֹרְדוֹסHerodלַהֲבִיאוֹhave-brought-him-forthמָחָרon-the-morrowלְדִיןto-judgment,וַיִּישַׁןwas-sleepingפֶּטְרוֹסPeterבֵּין־שְׁנֵיbetween-twoאַנְשֵׁיmen-ofצָבָאwar,וְהוּאand-heאָסוּרboundבִּשְׁנַיִםwith-twoזִקִּיםchains:וְשֹׁמְרֵיand-the-keepers-ofהַפֶּתַחthe-doorשֹׁמְרִיםkeptאֶת־הַמִּשְׁמָר׃the-prison.

    And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.

    וְהִנֵּהAnd,-behold,מַלְאַךְthe-angel-ofיְהוָֹהthe-Lordנִצָּבcameעָלָיוupon-him,וְאוֹרand-a-lightנָגַהּshinedבַּחֶדֶרin-the-prison:וַיִּסְפֹּקand-he-smoteעַל־יֶרֶךְon-the-sideפֶּטְרוֹסPeter,וַיְעִירֵהוּand-raised-him-up,לֵאמֹרsaying,קוּםArise-upמְהֵרָהquickly.וַיִּפְּלוּAnd-fell-offמוֹסְרוֹתָיוhis-chainsמֵעַלfromיָדָיו׃his-hands.

    And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

    וַיֹּאמֶרAnd-saidאֵלָיוunto-him,הַמַּלְאָךְthe-angelחֲגֹרGirdמׇתְנֶיךָthyself,וְהַנְעֵלand-bind-sandals-onאֶת־רַגְלֶיךָyour-feet.וַיַּעַשׂAnd-he-didכֵּןso.וַיֹּאמֶרAnd-he-saithאֵלָיוunto-him,עֲטֵהCast-about-youמְעִילְךָyour-garment,וְלֵךְand-followאַחֲרָי׃me.

    And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

    וַיֵּצֵאAnd-he-went-out,וַיֵּלֶךְand-followedאַחֲרָיוhim;וְלֹאand-notיָדַעwistאִם־אֱמֶתthat-trueהוּאit-wasהַנַּעֲשֶׂה־לּוֹwhich-was-done-to-himעַל־יְדֵיbyהַמַּלְאָךְthe-angel;כִּיbutכְּמַרְאֶהa-visionהָיָהthought-he-it-wasבְּעֵינָיו׃in-his-eyes.

    And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

    וַיַּעַבְרוּWhen-they-were-pastדֶּרֶךְthroughהַמִּשְׁמֶרֶתthe-wardהָרִאשׁוֹנָהfirstוְהַשְּׁנִיָּהand-the-second,וַיָּבֹאוּthey-cameעַד־שַׁעַרunto-the-gate-ofהַבַּרְזֶלironאֲשֶׁרthatיֵצְאוּleadethבוֹby-itהָעִירָהunto-the-city;וַיִּפָּתַחwhich-openedהַשַּׁעַרthe-gateלִפְנֵיהֶםto-themמֵאֵלָיוof-his-own-accord:וַיֵּצְאוּand-they-went-out,הַחוּצָהforth,וַיַּעַבְרוּand-passed-on-throughרְחוֹבstreetאֶחָדone;וַיַּעַלand-departedהַמַּלְאָךְthe-angelמֵעָלָיוfrom-himפִּתְאֹם׃forthwith.

    When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

    וַיְהִיAnd-it-came-to-passבְּשׁוּבwhen-was-comeדַּעְתּוֹto-himselfעָלָיוPeter,וַיֹּאמֶרhe-said,פֶּטְרוֹסPeterעַתָּהNowזֶהthisיָדַעְתִּיI-knowבֶאֱמֶתof-a-surety,כִּיthatהָאָדוֹןthe-Lordשָׁלַחhath-sentאֶת־מַלְאָכוֹhis-angel,וַיְפַלְּטֵנִיand-hath-delivered-meמִיַּדout-of-the-hand-ofהוֹרְדוֹסHerod,וּמִכׇּל־מְזִימַּתand-from-all-the-expectation-ofעַםthe-people-ofהַיְּהוּדִים׃the-Jews.

    And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

    הוּאheחשֵׁבAnd-when-had-consideredכָּזֹאתthe-thing,וְהוּאheבָאcameעַד־בֵּיתto-the-house-ofמִרְיָםMaryאֵםthe-mother-ofיוֹחָנָןJohn,הַמְכֻנֶּהwhose-surname-wasמַרְקוֹסMark;אֲשֶׁרwhereנִקְהֲלוּ־שָׁםwere-gathered-togetherרַבִּיםmanyוְהֵםand-theyמִתְפַּלֲלִיםprayingיָחַד׃together.

    And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

  13. 13

    וַיִּדְפֹּקAnd-as-he-knockedעַל־דֶּלֶתat-the-door-ofהַשָּׁעַרthe-gate,וַתִּגַּשׁcameנַעֲרָהa-damselלְהַקְשִׁיבto-hearken,וּשְׁמָהּnamedרוֹדִי׃Rhoda.

    And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.

    וַתַּכֵּרAnd-when-she-knewאֶת־קוֹלthe-voice-ofפֶּטְרוֹסPeter,וּמִשִּׂמְחָתָהּfor-gladnessלֹא־פָתְחָהshe-opened-notלּוֹto-himאֶת־דֶּלֶתthe-door-ofהַשָּׁעַרthe-gate,וַתָּרׇץbut-ranהַבַּיְתָהin,וַתַּגֵּדand-toldלָהֶםthemכִּי־פֶטְרוֹסhow-Peterעֹמֵדstoodעַל־הַפָּתַח׃before-the-gate.

    And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.

  15. 15

    וַיֹּאמְרוּAnd-they-saidאֵלֶיהָunto-her,מְשֻׁגַּעַתmadאָתְּYou-are.וְהִיאBut-sheמִתְאַמֶּצֶתconstantly-affirmedכִי־כֵןthat-it-was-even-soהַדָּבָרthe-thing.וַיֹּאמְרוּThen-said-they,מַלְאָכוֹhis-angelהוּא׃It-is.

    And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

  16. 16

    וּפֶטְרוֹסBut-Peterדֹּפֵקcontinued-knockingעוֹדstill:וַיִּפְתְּחוּand-when-they-had-opened,וַיִּרְאֻהוּand-saw-him,וַיִּתְמָהוּ׃they-were-astonished.

    But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

    וַיִּרְמֹזBut-he,-beckoningלָהֶםunto-themבְּיָדוֹwith-the-handלַחֲשׁוֹתto-hold-their-peace,וַיְסַפֵּרdeclaredלָהֶםunto-themאֲשֶׁר־הוֹצִיאוֹhow-had-brought-himהָאָדוֹןthe-Lordמִן־הַמִּשְׁמָרout-of-the-prison.וַיֹּאמֶרAnd-he-said,הַגִּידוּGo-shewאֶת־זֹאתthese-thingsלְיַעֲקֹבunto-James,וְלָאַחִיםand-to-the-brethren.וַיֵּצֵאAnd-he-departed,וַיֵּלֶךְ־לוֹand-wentלְמָקוֹםinto-placeאַחֵר׃another.

    But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

  18. 18

    הַבֹּקֶרNow-as-soon-as-dayאוֹרit-was,וּמְבוּכָהthere-was-stirרַבָּהno-smallהָיְתָהwasבֵּיןamongאַנְשֵׁיthe-men-ofהַצָּבָאwar,עַל־פֶּטְרוֹסabout-Peter,וַיֹּאמְרוּand-they-said,מֶה־הָיָהwhat-was-becomeלוֹ׃of-him.

    Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

  19. 19

    וַיְהִיAnd-it-came-to-passכַּאֲשֶׁרwhenבִּקֵּשׁhad-sought-forאוֹתוֹhimהוֹרְדוֹסHerod,וְלֹאand-notמְצָאוֹfound-him,חָקַרhe-examinedאֶת־הַשֹּׁמְרִיםthe-keepers,וַיְצַוand-commandedלְהוֹצִיאָםthat-they-should-be-putלַמָּוֶתto-death.וַיֵּרֶדAnd-he-went-downמִיהוּדָהfrom-Judaeaאֶל־קֵיסַרְיָהto-Caesarea,וַיֵּשֶׁבand-abodeשָׁם׃there.

    And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judæa to Cæsarea, and there abode.

  20. 20

    וְהוֹרְדוֹסAnd-Herodאָזthenנֹטֵרwas-highly-displeased-withאֶת־בְּנֵי־צוֹרthem-of-Tyreוְצִידוֹןand-Sidon:וַיָּבֹאוּbut-they-cameאֵלָיוto-himלֵבwith-accordאֶחָדone,וַיְפַתּוּand,-having-made-their-friendאֶת־בְּלַסְטוֹסBlastusאֲשֶׁרwhich-wasעַל־חֲדַרover-the-chamber-ofהַמֶּלֶךְthe-king,וַיְבַקְשׁוּdesiredשָׁלוֹםpeace;יַעַןbecauseלָקְחוּwas-nourishedמִחְיַתthe-sustenance-ofאַרְצוֹתָםtheir-countryמֵאֶרֶץby-the-country-ofהַמֶּלֶךְ׃the-king.

    And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country.

  21. 21

    וַיְהִיAnd-it-came-to-passבַּיּוֹםupon-a-dayהַמּוּעָדsetוַיִּלְבַּשׁarrayedהוֹרְדוֹסHerodלְבוּשׁin-apparelמַלְכוּתroyal,וַיֵּשֶׁבsatעַל־כִּסֵּאupon-the-throne-ofהַמִּשְׁפָּטjudgment,וַיַּטֵּףand-made-an-orationאֲלֵיהֶםunto-themאִמְרָתוֹ׃his-speech.

    And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

  22. 22

    וַיָּרִיעוּAnd-gave-a-shoutלוֹto-him,הָעָםthe-peopleלֵאמֹרsaying,קוֹלIt-is-the-voice-ofאֱלֹהִיםa-god,הוּאit-is,וְלֹאand-notקוֹלthe-voice-ofאָדָם׃a-man.

    And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

  23. 23

    וַיַּכֵּהוּAnd-smote-himמַלְאַךְ־יְהוָֹהthe-angel-of-the-Lordפִּתְאֹםimmediately,עֵקֶבbecauseאֲשֶׁרthatלֹא־נָתַןhe-gave-notכָּבוֹדthe-gloryלֵאלֹהִיםto-God:וַיֹּאכְלֻהוּand-he-was-eaten-ofתוֹלָעִיםworms,וַיָּמֹת׃and-gave-up-the-ghost.

    And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

  24. 24

    וּדְבַרBut-the-word-ofיְהוָֹהGodהוֹלֵךְgrewוָרָב׃and-multiplied.

    But the word of God grew and multiplied.

  25. 25

    וַיָּשׁוּבוּAnd-returnedבַּר־נַבָּאBarnabasוְשָׁאוּלand-Saulמִירוּשָׁלָיִםfrom-Jerusalem,אַחֲרֵיwhenכַלּוֹתָםthey-had-fulfilledאֶת־הַשִּׁמּוּשׁtheir-ministry,וַיִּקְחוּand-tookאִתָּםwith-themאֶת־יוֹחָנָןJohn,הַמְכֻנֶּהwhose-surname-wasמַרְקוֹס׃Mark.

    And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.
