1. 1

   בַּמַּאֲמָרIn the treatiseהָרִאשׁוֹןthe formerכָּתַבְתִּיhave I written,תְּאוֹפִילוֹסO Theophilus,עַל־כֹּלof allאֲשֶׁרthatהֵחֵלbeganיֵשׁוּעַJesusלַעֲשׂוֹתboth to doוּלְלַמֵּד׃and to teach,

   The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

2. 2

   עַד־הַיּוֹםUntil the dayאֲשֶׁרin whichלֻקַּחhe was taken up,לַמָּרוֹםon high,אַחֲרֵיafterתִּתּוֹhe had givenמִצְוֹתcommandmentsבְּרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁthrough the Holy Ghostאֶל־הַשְּׁלִיחִיםunto the apostlesאֲשֶׁר־בָּחַרwhom he had chosenבָּהֶם׃from among them:

   Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

   וַאֲשֶׁרTo whomגַּם־הִתְיַצֵּבalso he shewed himselfלָהֶםto themבְּאֹתוֹתby signsרַבּוֹתmany,אַחֲרֵיafterעֻנּוֹתוֹhis passion,וַיֵּרָאand was seenאֲלֵיהֶםof themאַרְבָּעִיםfortyיוֹםdays,וַיְדַבֵּרand spakeעַל־מַלְכוּתof the kingdom ofהָאֱלֹהִים׃God:

   To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

4. 4

   וּבְאָכְלוֹAnd as he did eatעִמָּהֶםwith them,צִוָּהhe commandedאֹתָםthemלְבִלְתִּיnotסוּרto departמִירוּשָׁלָיִםfrom Jerusalem,וּלְהוֹחִילbut to wait forלְהַבְטָחַתthe promise ofהָאָבthe Father,אֲשֶׁרwhich,שְׁמַעְתֶּםyou have heardמִמֶּנִּי׃of me.

   And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

   כִּיForיוֹחָנָןJohnהִטְבִּילtruly baptizedבַּמָּיִםwith water;וְאַתֶּםbut youתִּטָּבְלוּshall be baptizedבְּרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁwith the Holy Ghostבְּקָרוֹבshortly,אַחֲרֵיafterהַיָּמִיםthe daysהָאֵלֶּה׃these.

   For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

6. 6

   וַיְהִיWhen they thereforeבְּהִתְאַסְּפָםwere comeיַחְדָּוtogether,וַיִּשְׁאָלֻהוּthey asked of him,לֵאמֹרsaying,אֲדֹנֵינוּOur Lord,הֲתָשִׁיבwill you restoreבָּעֵתat thisהַזֹּאתtimeאֶת־הַמַּלְכוּתthe kingdomלְיִשְׂרָאֵל׃to Israel?

   When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

7. 7

   וַיֹּאמֶרAnd he saidאֲלֵיהֶםunto them,לֹאIt is notלָכֶםfor youלָדַעַתto knowהָעִתִּיםthe timesוְהַזְּמַנִּיםor the seasons,אֲשֶׁרwhichקָבַעhath putהָאָבthe Fatherבְּשִׁלְטָנוֹin the powerשֶׁלּוֹ׃of his own.

   And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

8. 8

   אֲבָלButתִּשְׂאוּyou shall receiveגְבוּרָהpower,בְּבוֹאwhen is comeעֲלֵיכֶםupon you,רוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁthe Holy Ghostוִהְיִיתֶםand you shall beעֵדַיwitnesses unto meבִּירוּשָׁלַיִםin Jerusalem,וּבְכׇלand in allיְהוּדָהJudaea,וּבְשׁוֹמְרוֹןand in Samaria,וְעַד־קְצֵהand unto the uttermost part ofהָאָרֶץ׃the earth.

   But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

9. 9

   וַיְהִיAnd whenכְּכַלּוֹתוֹhe had finishedלְדַבֵּרspeakingזֹאתthese things,הֹעֲלָהhe was taken up;וְהֵםand theyרֹאִיםbeheld,וַיִּשָּׂאֵהוּand lifted him upעָנָןa cloudמִנֶּגֶדfrom beforeעֵינֵיהֶם׃their eyes.

   And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

10. 10

    וַיַּבִּיטוּAnd they lookedאַחֲרָיוafter himהַשָּׁמַיִםtoward heavenבַּעֲלוֹתוֹas he went up,וְהִנֵּהand behold,שְׁנֵיtwoאֲנָשִׁיםmenלְבוּשֵׁיclothed inבַדִּיםwhite linenנִצָּבִיםstoodעֲלֵיהֶם׃by them;

    And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

11. 11

    וַיֹּאמְרוּWhich also said,אַנְשֵׁיYou men ofהַגָּלִילGalilee,מַה־תַּעַמְדוּwhy stand youוְעֵינֵיכֶםwith your eyesלַשָּׁמָיִםgazing up into heaven?זֶהthis sameיֵשׁוּעַJesus,אֲשֶׁרwhichהוֹעֲלָהis taken upמֵעֲלֵיכֶםfrom youהַשָּׁמַיִםinto heaven,בּוֹאin like mannerיָבוֹאshall so comeכַּאֲשֶׁרasרְאִיתֶםyou have seenאֹתוֹhimעֹלֶהgoלַמָּרוֹם׃on high.

    Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

12. 12

    וַיִּפְנוּThen returned theyוַיֵּלְכוּand wentיְרוּשָׁלַיְמָהunto Jerusalemמִן־הָהָרfrom the mountהַנִּקְרָאcalledהַרthe mount ofהַזֵּיתִיםOlives,וְהוּאwhich isקָרוֹבnearלִירוּשָׁלַיִםto Jerusalem,כְּדֶרֶךְas the journeyתְּחוּםof the bound ofשַׁבָּת׃a sabbath.

    Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.

13. 13

    וַיָּבֹאוּAnd when they were come in,הָעִירָהinto the city,וַיַּעֲלוּthey went upאֶל־הָעֲלִיָּהinto an upper room,אֲשֶׁרwhereיָשְׁבוּ־בָהּabodeפֶּטְרוֹסPeter,וְיַעֲקֹבand James,וְיוֹחָנָןand John,וְאַנְדְּרַיand Andrew,פִילִפּוֹסPhilip,וְתוֹמָאand Thomas,בַּר־תַּלְמַיBartholomewוּמַתַּיand Matthew,יַעֲקֹבJamesבֶּן־חַלְפַיthe son of Alphaeus,וְשִׁמְעוֹןand SimonהַקַּנָּאZelotes,וִיהוּדָהand Judasבֶּן־יַעֲקֹב׃the son of James.

    And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphæus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.

14. 14

    כׇּלallאֵלֶּהTheseהָיוּcontinuedשֹׁקְדִיםstedfastlyיַחְדָּוtogetherבְּלֵבwith heartאֶחָדoneבִּתְפִלָּהin prayerוּבְתַחֲנוּנִיםand supplication,הֵםtheyוְהַנָּשִׁיםwith the women,עִםwithמִרְיָםMaryאֵםthe mother ofיֵשׁוּעַJesus,וְעִם־אֶחָיו׃and with his brethren.

    These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

15. 15

    וּבַיָּמִיםAnd in daysהָהֵםthoseקָםstood upפֶּטְרוֹסPeterבְּתוֹךְin the midst ofהָאַחִיםthe disciples,וּמִסְפַּרand the number ofשְׁמוֹתnamesהַנִּקְהָלִיםof them gatheredיַחַדtogetherכְּמֵאָהwere about an hundredוְעֶשְׂרִיםand twenty,וַיֹּאמַר׃and said,

    And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

16. 16

    אֲנָשִׁיםMenאַחִיםand brethren,צָרִיךְthis scripture must needsהָיָהhave beenשֶׁיִּמָּלֵאfulfilled,הַכָּתוּבthe scriptureהַזֶּהthis,אֲשֶׁרwhichרוּחַ־הַקֹּדֶשׁthe Holy Ghostדִּבֵּרspakeמִקֶּדֶםof oldבְּפִיby the mouth ofדָוִדDavidעַל־יְהוּדָהconcerning Judas,אֲשֶׁרwhichהָיָהwasלְמוֹלִיךְguide toאֶת־תֹּפְשֵׂיthem that tookיֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus.

    Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

17. 17

    כִּי־הָיָהFor he wasנִמְנֶהnumberedאִתָּנוּwith us,וְזָכָהand had obtainedבְּגוֹרַלpart ofהַשֵּׁרוּתministryהַזֶּה׃this.

    For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

18. 18

    וְהִנֵּהNowהוּאthis manקָנָהpurchasedלוֹfor himselfשָׂדֶהa fieldבִּשְׂכַרwith the reward ofהָרִשְׁעָהiniquity;וַיִּפֹּלand fallingעַל־פָּנָיוheadlongאַרְצָהto the ground,וַיִּבָּקַעhe burst asunderבַּתָּוֶךְin the midst,וַיִּשָּׁפְכוּand gushed outכׇּל־מֵעָיו׃all his bowels.

    Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

19. 19

    וְנוֹדָעAnd it was knownהַדָּבָרthe matterהַזֶּהthisלְכׇל־יֹשְׁבֵיunto all the dwellers ofיְרוּשָׁלָיִםJerusalem;וַיִּקָּרֵאand was calledבִּשְׂפָתָםin their tongueלַשָּׂדֶהthe fieldהַהוּאthat,חֲקַלAkelדְּמָאdama,הוּאthat is to say,שְׂדֵהThe field ofהַדָּם׃blood.

    And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

20. 20

    כִּיForכָתוּבit is writtenבְּסֵפֶרin the book ofתְּהִלִּיםPsalms,תְּהִי־טִירָתוֹLet his habitation beנְשַׁמָּהdesolate,וְאַל־יְהִיand let no manבָהּthereinיֹשֵׁבdwell:וְאוֹמֵרand it saith,פְּקֻדָּתוֹhis bishoprickיִקַּחlet takeאַחֵר׃another.

    For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.

21. 21

    וְעַל־כֵּןWhereforeצָרִיךְmustשֶׁאֶחָדoneמִן־הָאֲנָשִׁיםof these menאֲשֶׁרwhichהִתְהָלְּכוּhave companiedאִתָּנוּwith usכׇּל־יְמֵיall the timeאֲשֶׁרthatאֲדֹנֵינוּour LordיֵשׁוּעַJesusיוֹצֵאwent inוָבָאand outלְפָנֵינוּ׃among us,

    Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

22. 22

    הָחֵלBeginningמִטְּבִילַתfrom the baptism ofיוֹחָנָןJohn,עַד־יוֹםunto the dayהִלָּקְחוֹhe was taken upמֵאִתָּנוּfrom us,יִהְיֶהmust one beעִמָּנוּwith usלְעֵדas a witness ofתְּחִיָּתוֹhis resurrectionמִן־הַמֵּתִים׃from the dead.

    Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

23. 23

    וַיַּעֲמִידוּAnd they appointedשְׁנַיִםtwo,אֶת־יוֹסֵףJosephהַנִּקְרָאcalledבַר־שַׁבָּאBarsabas,וְהוּאwhoמְכֻנֶּהwas surnamedיוּסְטוֹסJustus,וְאֵתandמַתִּיָּה׃Matthias.

    And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

24. 24

    וַיִּתְפַּלְלוּAnd they prayed,וַיֹּאמְרוּand said,אַתָּהYou,יְהוָֹהLORD,הַיּוֹדֵעַwhich knowestכׇּל־הַלְּבָבוֹתthe hearts of all,הַרְאֵה־נָאshew, we pray you,מִן־הַשְּׁנַיִםof twoהָאֵלֶּהtheseאֶת־הָאֶחָדthe oneאֲשֶׁרwhomבָּחַרְתָּyou have chosenבּוֹ׃him,

    And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

25. 25

    לָקַחַתThat he may takeאֶת־גּוֹרַלpart ofהַשֵּׁרוּתministryהַזֶּהthisוְהַשְּׁלִיחוּתand apostleship,אֲשֶׁרfrom whichעָבַרfell awayמִמֶּנָּהtherefrom,יְהוּדָהJudas,לַהֲלֹךְthat he might goאֶל־מְקוֹמוֹto his placeשֶׁלּוֹ׃which is his own.

    That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.

26. 26

    וַיַּפִּילוּAnd they gave forthגוֹרָלוֹתtheir lots;וַיִּפֹּלand fellהַגּוֹרָלthe lotעַל־מַתִּיָּהupon Matthias;וַיִּסָּפַחand he was numberedאֶל־עַשְׁתֵּי־עָשָׂרwith the elevenהַשְּׁלִיחִים׃apostles.

    And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
