1. 1

   אֱמֶתtrueהַדָּבָרis-the-sayingאִישׁa-manכִּי־יְבַקֵּשׁbecause-he-should-look-forלִהְיוֹתto-beהֶגְמוֹןbishopלְמַעֲשֶׂהto-a-workטוֹבgoodמִתְאַוֶּה׃he-desireth

   This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

2. 2

   וְהֶגְמוֹןand-a-bishopהָעֵדָהof-the-churchצָרִיךְmustלִהְיוֹתto-beבְּאֵיןwithoutדֹּפִיblameבַּעַל־אִשָּׁהhusband-of-a-wifeאַחַתoneמשֵׁלvigilantבְּרוּחוֹin-his-spiritצָנוּעַsoberוְנֶחְמָדand-of-good-behaviorלַבְּרִיּוֹתto-menמַכְנִיסgiven-to-hospitalityאֹרְחִיםto-strangersוּמֵבִיןaptלְלַמֵּד׃to-teach

   A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

   וְלֹאnotאֹהֵבcovetous-ofיַיִןwineוְלֹא־בַעַלnoאֶגְרֹףstrikerוְלֹאnotבֹצֵעַgreedy-ofבֶּצַעlucreרָעfilthyכִּיbutאִם־דָּןpatientלְכַף־זְכוּתin-the-scale-of-meritוְלֹאand-notאִישׁa-brawlerמִדְיָנִיםof-contentionsוְלֹאand-notאֹהֵבlover-ofכָּסֶף׃money

   Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

   וִיהִיand-may-beמַנְהִיגone-that-rulethאֶת־בֵּיתוֹhis-houseבְּטוֹבwellוּמַדְרִיךְhavingאֶת־בָּנָיוhis-childrenלְמִשְׁמַעְתּוֹin-subjectionבְּכׇל־הַיּשֶׁר׃with-all-gravity

   One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

   כִּיbecauseאִם־לֹאif-notיֵדַעshall-knowאִישׁa-manלְהַנְהִיגto-ruleאֶת־בֵּיתוֹhis-own-houseאֵיכָכָהhowיוּכַלshall-heלְהַשְׁגִּיחַtake-care-ofעַל־עֲדַתthe-church-ofאֱלֹהִים׃God

   (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

6. 6

   וְאַל־יְהִיand-do-not-let-this-beתַּלְמִידdiscipleחָדָשׁa-novice,פֶּן־יִרְהַבlest-he-will-importuneלִבּוֹhis-heartוְיִפֹּלand-fallבְּדִיןinto-the-condemnation-ofהַמַּשְׂטִין׃the-accuser

   Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

7. 7

   וְהוּאand-heגַם־צָרִיךְmoreover-mustהֱיוֹתhaveלוֹhimשֵׁםthe-name-ofטוֹבgoodבְּפִיby-the-mouth-ofאֹתָםthemשֶׁבַּחוּץof-those-outsideפֶּן־יִפֹּלlest-shall-fallבְּחֶרְפָּהinto-reproachוּבְמוֹקֵשׁand-the-snare-ofהַמַּשְׂטִין׃the-accuser

   Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

8. 8

   וְכֵןand-soגַּם־הַשַּׁמָּשִׁיםalso-the-deaconsיִהְיוּshall-beיְשָׁרִיםgraveוְלֹאand-notמַחֲלִיקֵיdouble-tongued-ofלָשׁוֹןtongueוְלֹאand-notאֹהֲבִיםgiven-toסְבֹא־יַיִןmuch-wineוְלֹאand-notנֹטִיםgreedyאַחֲרֵיafterבֶצַע־רָע׃of-filthy-lucre

   Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

   כִּיbecauseאִם־יִשְׁמְרוּholdingאֶת־סוֹדthe-mystery-ofהָאֱמוּנָהthe-faithבְּרוּחַin-a-spiritטְהוֹרָה׃pure

   Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

10. 10

    וְגַם־הֵםthat-they-alsoיִבָּחֲנוּthey may be testedבָרִאשֹׁנָהfirstוְאַחַרand-thenכֵּןthusיְשַׁמְּשׁוּlet-them-use-the-officeאִם־אֵיןif-there-be-noבָּהֶםin-themדֹּפִי׃a fault

    And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

11. 11

    וְכֵןand-soהַנָּשִׁיםtheir-wivesתִּהְיֶינָהmust-beיְשָׁרוֹתgraveוְלֹאand-notמַלְשִׁינוֹתslanderersמשְׁלוֹתsoberבְּרוּחָןin-their-spiritוְנֶאֱמָנוֹתand-faithfulבַּכֹּל׃in-all-things

    Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

12. 12

    הַשַּׁמָּשִׁיםthe-deaconsיִהְיוּshall-beכׇל־אֶחָדeachבַּעַל־אִשָּׁהhusband-of-a-wifeאֶחָתoneוּמְנַהֲלִיםrulingבְּטוֹבwellאֶת־בְּנֵיהֶםtheir-childrenוְאֶת־בָּתֵּיהֶם׃and-their-own-houses

    Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

13. 13

    כִּיbecauseהַמְשַׁמְּשִׁיםthose-who-serveכַּהֹגֶןwellיִקְנוּpurchaseלְנַפְשָׁםto-themselvesמַעֲלָהa-degreeטוֹבָהgoodוּבִטָּחוֹןand-confidenceרַבgreatבֶּאֱמוּנַתin-faith-ofהַמָּשִׁיחַthe-Messiahיֵשׁוּעַ׃Jesus

    For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

14. 14

    זֹאתthisאֲנִיIכֹתֵבwritingלְךָfor-youוַאֲקַוֶּהhopingלָבֹאto-comeאֵלֶיךָto-youבִּמְהֵרָה׃soon

    These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:

15. 15

    וְאִם־אֶתְמַהְמַהּbut-if-I-tarry-longהִנֵּהbeholdתֵדַעyou-may-knowאֵיךְhowלְהִתְנַהֵגyou-ought-to-behaveבְּבֵיתin-the-house-ofהָאֱלֹהִיםthe-Godאֲשֶׁרwhichהִיאisעֲדַתthe-church-ofאֱלֹהִיםGodחַיִּיםlivingעַמּוּדthe-pillar-ofהָאֱמֶתthe-truthוּמְכוֹנָהּ׃and-ground

    But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

16. 16

    וּבְוַדָּיand-without-controversyגָּדוֹלgreatסוֹדis-the-mystery-ofהַחֲסִידוּתgodlinessאֲשֶׁרwhichנִגְלָהwas-manifestבַבָּשָׂרin-the-fleshנִצְדַּקjustifiedבָּרוּחַin-the-Spiritנִרְאָהseenלַמַּלְאָכִיםof-angelsהֻגַּדpreachedבַּגּוֹיִםunto-the-nationsנִתְקַבֵּלbelieved-onבֶּאֱמוּנָהin-faithבָּעוֹלָםin-the-worldנַעֲלָהreceived-upבְּכָבוֹד׃in-glory

    And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
