    רְאוּbeholdמַה־גָּדְלָהwhat-manner-ofאַהֲבַתloveהָאָבthe-Fatherאֲשֶׁרwhichנָתַןhath-bestowedלָנוּupon-usלְהִקָּרֵאthat-we-should-be-calledבְּנֵיthe-sons-ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodוּבָנָיוand-his-sonsאֲנָחְנוּwe-areעַל־כֵּןthereforeהָעוֹלָםthe-worldאֵינֶנּוּnotיֹדֵעַknowethאֹתָנוּusיַעַןbecauseכִּי־אוֹתוֹhimלֹאnotיָדָע׃it-knew

    Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

    יְדִידַיbelovedעַתָּהnowבָּנִיםsonsלֵאלֹהִיםof-Godאֲנַחְנוּwe-areוְעוֹדand-yetלֹאnotנִגְלָהdoth-appearמַה־נִּהְיֶהwhat-we-shall-beאֲבָלbutיָדַעְנוּwe-knowכִּיthatבְהִגָּלוֹתוֹwhen-he-shall-appearנִהְיֶהwe-shall-beדֹמִים־לוֹlike-himכִּיforנִרְאֵהוּwe-shall-see-himכְּמוֹasשֶׁהוּא׃he-is

    Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

    וְכׇל־אֲשֶׁרand-every-man-thatלוֹhathהַתִּקְוָהhopeהַזֹּאתthisיְטַהֵרpurifiethאֶת־עַצְמוֹhimselfכַּאֲשֶׁרeven-asטָהוֹרpureגַּם־הוּא׃he-also-is

    And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

    כׇּל־חֹטֵאwhosoever-committeth-sinפֹּשֵׁעַtransgressethבַּתּוֹרָהthe-lawהוּאheוְהַחֵטְאand-sinפְּשִׁיעָהis-the-transgression-ofבַתּוֹרָה׃the-law

    Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

    וִידַעְתֶּםand-you-knowכִּיthatהוּאheנִגְלָהwas-manifestedלָשֵׂאתto-take-awayאֶת־חֲטָאֵינוּour-sinsוּבוֹand-in-himאֵיןis-noחֵטְא׃sin

    And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

    כׇּל־הָעֹמֵדwhosoever-abidethבּוֹin-himלֹאnotיֶחֱטָאsinnethכׇּל־הַחוֹטֵאwhosoever-sinnethלֹאnotרָאָהוּhath-seen-himאַף־לֹאneitherיְדָעוֹ׃known-him

    Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

    בָּנַיlittle-childrenאַל־יַתְעֶהlet...not-deceiveאֶתְכֶםyouאִישׁany-manהָעֹשֶׂהhe-that-doethצְדָקָהrighteousnessצַדִּיקrighteousהוּאisכַּאֲשֶׁרeven-asהוּאhe-isצַדִּיק׃righteous

    Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

    וְהַחֹטֵאhe-that-committeth-sinמִן־הַשָּׂטָןof-the-devilהוּאisכִּיforהַשָּׂטָןthe-devilרִאשׁוֹןis-firstלַחֹטְאִיםamong-the-sinnersוּבַעֲבוּרforזֹאתthis-purposeנִגְלָהwas-manifestedבֶן־הָאֱלֹהִיםthe-Son-of-Godלְהָפֵרthat-he-might-destroyאֶת־פְּעֻלּוֹתthe-works-ofהַשָּׂטָן׃the-devil

    He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

    כׇּל־הַנּוֹלָדwhosoever-is-bornמֵאֱלֹהִיםof-Godלֹאnotיֶחֱטָאdoth-commit-sinכִּיforזַרְעוֹhis-seedבּוֹin-himיִשָּׁאֵרremainethוְלֹאand-notיוּכַלhe-canלַחֲטֹאsinכִּיbecauseמֵאֱלֹהִיםof-Godנוֹלַד׃he-is-born

    Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

    וּבָזֹאתin-thisנוֹדְעוּare-manifestבְּנֵיthe-children-ofהָאֱלֹהִיםGodוּבְנֵיand-the-children-ofהַשָּׂטָןthe-devilכׇּל־אִישׁwhosoeverאֲשֶׁרthatלֹא־יַעֲשֶׂהdoeth-notצְדָקָהrighteousnessאֵינֶנּוּis-notמֵאֱלֹהִיםof-Godוְכֵןneitherכׇּל־אֲשֶׁרhe-thatלֹא־יֶאֱהַבloveth-notאֶת־אָחִיו׃his-brother

    In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

    כִּיbecauseזֹאתthisהַשְּׁמוּעָהthe-messageאֲשֶׁרwhichשְׁמַעְתֶּםyou-have-heardמֵרֹאשׁfrom-the-beginningלְאַהֲבָהthat-we-should-loveאִישׁoneאֶת־רֵעֵהוּ׃another

    For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

    לֹאnotכְקַיִןas-Cainאֲשֶׁרwhoהָיָהwasמִן־הָרָעof-that-wicked-oneוְהָרַגand-slewאֶת־אָחִיוhis-brotherוּמַדּוּעַand-whereforeהֲרָגוֹslew-he-himיַעַןbecauseכִּי־מַעֲשָׂיוhis-worksהָיוּwereרָעִיםevilוּמַעֲשֵׂיand-the-works-ofאָחִיוhis-brotherמַעֲשֵׂי־צֶדֶק׃righteous

    Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

    אַל־תִּתְמְהוּmarvel-notאֶחָיmy-brethrenאִם־יִשְׂנָאif-hateאֶתְכֶםyouהָעוֹלָם׃the-world

    Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

  14. 14

    אֲנַחְנוּweיָדַעְנוּknowכִּיthatעָבַרְנוּwe-have-passedמִן־הַמָּוֶתfrom-deathאֶל־הַחַיִּיםunto-lifeבַּאֲשֶׁרbecauseאָהַבְנוּwe-loveאֶת־אַחֵינוּthe-brethrenאִישׁheאֲשֶׁרthatלֹא־יֶאֱהַבloveth-notיִשָּׁאֵרabidethבַּמָּוֶת׃in-death

    We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

    כׇּל־הַשּׂנֵאwhosoever-hatethאֶת־אָחִיוhis-brotherרֹצֵחַa-murdererהוּאisוִידַעְתֶּםand-you-knowכִּיthatכׇל־רֹצֵחַno-murdererלֹאnotיִתְקַיְּמוּ־בוֹhath-abiding-in-himחַיֵּיthe-life-ofעוֹלָם׃eternal

    Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

    בָּזֹאתherebyיָדַעְנוּperceive-weאֶת־הָאַהֲבָהthe-loveכִּיbecauseהוּאheנָתַןlaid-downאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹhis-lifeבַּעֲדֵנוּfor-usגַּם־אֲנַחְנוּand-weחַיָּבִיםoughtלָתֵתto-lay-downאֶת־נַפְשֹׁתֵינוּour-livesבְּעַדforאַחֵינוּ׃the-brethren

    Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

  17. 17

    וְאִישׁbut-whosoאֲשֶׁר־לוֹhathנִכְסֵיthe-goods-ofהָעוֹלָםworldהַזֶּהthisוְהוּאandרֹאֶהseethאֶת־אָחִיוhis-brotherחֲסַר־לֶחֶםhave-needוְקֹפֵץand-shutteth-upאֶת־רַחֲמָיוhis-compassionמִמֶּנּוּfrom-himאֵיךְhowתַּעֲמָד־בּוֹdwelleth-in-himאַהֲבַתthe-love-ofאֱלֹהִים׃God

    But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

  18. 18

    בָּנַיmy-little-childrenאַל־נָאlet-us-notנֶאֱהַבloveבְּמִלִּיןin-wordוּבַלָּשׁוֹןneither-in-tongueכִּיbutאִם־בְּפֹעַלin-deedוּבֶאֱמֶת׃and-in-truth

    My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

  19. 19

    וּבָזֹאתand-herebyנֵדְעָהwe-knowכִּיthatמִן־הָאֱמֶתof-the-truthאֲנָחְנוּwe-areוּלְפָנָיוand-before-himנַשְׁקִיטshall-assureאֶת־לִבּוֹתֵינוּ׃our-hearts

    And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

  20. 20

    כִּיbecauseאִם־לִבֵּנוּif-our-heartיַרְשִׁיעַcondemnאֹתָנוּusהָאֱלֹהִיםGodנִשְׂגָּבis-greaterהוּאheמִלִּבֵּנוּthan-our-heartוְיֹדֵעַand-knowethאֶת־כֹּל׃all-things

    For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

  21. 21

    יְדִידַיbelovedאִם־לִבֵּנוּif-our-heartלֹא־יַרְשִׁיעֵנוּcondemn-us-notעֹזconfidenceלָנוּwe-haveבֵּאלֹהִים׃toward-God

    Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

  22. 22

    וְכׇל־אֲשֶׁרand-whatsoeverנִשְׁאַלwe-askמֵאִתּוֹof-himיִנָּתֶן־לָנוּwe-receiveכִּי־נִשְׁמֹרbecause-we-keepאֶת־מִצְוֹתָיוhis-commandmentsוְנַעֲשֶׂהand-doאֶת־הַיָּשָׁרthose-things-pleasingבְּעֵינָיו׃in-his-sight

    And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

  23. 23

    וְזֹאתand-this-isמִצְוָתוֹhis-commandmentלְהַאֲמִיןthat-we-should-believeבְּשֶׁם־בְּנוֹon-the-name-of-his-SonיֵשׁוּעַJesusהַמָּשִׁיחַthe-Messiahוּלְאַהֲבָהand-loveאִישׁoneאֶת־רֵעֵהוּanotherכַּאֲשֶׁרasצִוָּנוּ׃he-gave-us-commandment

    And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

  24. 24

    וְהַשֹּׁמֵרand-he-that-keepethאֶת־מִצְוֹתָיוhis-commandmentsיָקוּםdwellethבּוֹin-himוְהוּאand-heבוֹin-himוּבָזֹאתand-herebyנֵדַעwe-knowכִּי־הוּאthat-heשֹׁכֵןabidethבָּנוּin-usבָּרוּחַby-the-Spiritאֲשֶׁר־נָתַןwhich-he-hath-givenלָנוּ׃us

    And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
