   Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

   יְדִידַיye/di/DAYmy belovedעַתָּהat/TAnowבְּנֵיbe/NEthe sons ofאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuwe areוְעוֹדve/ODand yetלֹאlonotנִרְאָהnir/Ahas appearedמַה־נִּהְיֶהma-nih/YEwhat we will beאֲבָלa/VALbutיָדַעְנוּya/DA/nuwe knowכִּיkithatכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenיֵרָאֶהye/ra/Ehe appearsנִהְיֶהnih/YEwe will beכָמֹהוּkha/MO/hulike himכִּיkiforנִרְאֵהוּnir/e/HUwe will see himכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasהוּא׃huhe is

   Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

   וְכׇל־אִישׁve/KHOL-ishand every manאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלוֹlohasהַתִּקְוָהhat/tik/VAthe hopeהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisבּוֹboin himיִטַּהֵרyit/ta/HERpurifies himselfכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasהוּאhuheטָהוֹר׃ta/HORpure

   And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

   כׇּל־הָעֹשֶׂהkol-ha/o/SEwhoever doesחֵטְאchetsinפֹּשֵׁעַpo/SHE/atransgressesגַּםgamalsoבַּתּוֹרָהbat/to/RAagainst the lawכִּיkiforהַחֵטְאha/CHETsinפֶּשַׁעPE/shatransgressionבַּתּוֹרָהbat/to/RAagainst the lawהוּא׃huit is

   Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

   וִידַעְתֶּםvi/da/TEMand you knowכִּיkithatהוּאhuheנִגְלָהnig/LAwas revealedלָשֵׂאתla/SETto take awayאֶת־חֲטָאֵינוּet-cha/ta/e/NUour sinsוּבוֹu/VOand in himאֵיןenthere is noחֵטְא׃chetsin

   And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

6. 6

   כׇּל־הָעֹמֵדkol-ha/o/MEDeveryone who remainsבּוֹboin himלֹאlonotיֶחֱטָאye/che/TAsinsכׇּל־הַחוֹטֵאkol-ha/cho/TEeveryone who sinsלֹאlonotרָאָהוּra/A/huhas seen himאַף־לֹאaf-lonorיְדָעוֹ׃ye/da/Oknown him

   Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

7. 7

   בָּנַיba/NAYmy childrenאַל־יַשִּׁיאal-yash/SHIlet not deceiveאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouאִישׁisha manהָעֹשֶׂהha/o/SEthe one who doesצְדָקָהtse/da/KArighteousnessצַדִּיקtsad/DIKrighteousהוּאhuisכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasהוּאhuhe isצַדִּיק׃tsad/DIKrighteous

   Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

   הָעֹשֶׂהha/o/SEthe one who doesחֵטְאchetsinמִן־הַשָּׂטָןmin-Has/sa/TANof SatanהוּאhuisכִּיkiforהַשָּׂטָןHas/sa/TANSatanחֹטֵאcho/TEsinsמֵרֹאשׁme/ROSHfrom the beginningוּבַעֲבוּרu/va/a/VURand forזֹאתzotthisנִגְלָהnig/LAwas revealedבֶן־הָאֱלֹהִיםven-Ha/e/lo/HIMthe Son of Godלְהָפֵרle/ha/FERto undoאֶת־מַעֲשֵׂיet-ma/a/SEthe works ofהַשָּׂטָן׃Has/sa/TANSatan

   He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

   כׇּל־הַנּוֹלָדkol-han/no/LADeveryone bornמֵאֱלֹהִיםme/e/lo/HIMof Godלֹאlodoes notיַעֲשֶׂהya/a/SEdoחֵטְאchetsinכִּיkiforזַרְעוֹzar/OHis seedשֹׁכֵןsho/KHENdwellsבּוֹboin himוְלֹאve/LOand notיוּכַלyu/KHALcan heלַחֲטֹאla/cha/TOsinכִּיkiforמֵאֱלֹהִיםme/e/lo/HIMof Godנוֹלָד׃no/LADis born

   Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

10. 10

    בְּזֹאתbe/ZOTin thisנִגְלוּnig/LUare revealedבְּנֵיbe/NEthe sons ofהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodוּבְנֵיu/ve/NEand the sons ofהַשָּׂטָןHas/sa/TANSatanכׇּל־אִישׁkol-ishevery manאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoלֹא־יַעֲשֶׂהlo-ya/a/SEdoes not doצְדָקָהtse/da/KArighteousnessאֵינֶנּוּe/NEN/nuis notמֵאֱלֹהִיםme/e/lo/HIMof Godוְכֵןve/KHENand soכׇּל־אֲשֶׁרkol-a/SHEReveryone whoלֹא־יֶאֱהַבlo-ye/e/HAVdoes not loveאֶת־אָחִיו׃et-a/CHIVhis brother

    In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

    כִּיkiforזֹאתzotthis isהַשְּׁמוּעָהhash/she/mu/Athe messageאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatשְׁמַעְתֶּםshe/ma/TEMyou have heardמֵרֹאשׁme/ROSHfrom the beginningלְאַהֲבָהle/a/ha/VAto loveאִישׁisha manאֶת־אָחִיו׃et-a/CHIVhis brother

    For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

12. 12

    לֹאlonotכְקַיִןkhe/KA/yinas Cainאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהָיָהha/YAwasמִן־הָרָעmin-ha/RAof the evil oneוְהָרַגve/ha/RAGand killedאֶת־אָחִיוet-a/CHIVhis brotherוּמַדּוּעַu/mad/DU/aand whyהֲרָגוֹha/ra/GOdid he kill himיַעַןYA/anbecauseכִּי־מַעֲשָׂיוki-ma/a/SAYVthat his worksהָיוּha/YUwereרָעִיםra/IMevilוּמַעֲשֵׂיu/ma/a/SEand the works ofאָחִיוa/CHIVhis brotherמַעֲשֵׂי־צֶדֶק׃ma/a/SE-TSE/dekworks of righteousness

    Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

13. 13

    אַל־תִּתְמְהוּal-tit/me/HUdo not be amazedאֶחָיe/CHAYmy brothersאִם־יִשְׂנָאim-yis/NAif hatesאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouהָעוֹלָם׃ha/o/LAMthe world

    Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

14. 14

    אֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweיָדַעְנוּya/DA/nuknowכִּיkithatעָבַרְנוּa/VAR/nuwe have passedמִן־הַמָּוֶתmin-ham/MA/vetfrom deathאֶל־הַחַיִּיםel-ha/chay/YIMto lifeכִּיkibecauseאָהַבְנוּa/hav/NUwe loveאֶת־הָאַחִיםet-ha/a/CHIMthe brothersאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoלֹא־יֶאֱהַבlo-ye/e/HAVdoes not loveאֶת־אָחִיוet-a/CHIVhis brotherעֹמֵדo/MEDremainsבַּמָּוֶת׃bam/MA/vetin death

    We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

15. 15

    כׇּל־הַשֹּׂנֵאkol-has/so/NEeveryone who hatesאֶת־אָחִיוet-a/CHIVhis brotherרֹצֵחַro/TSE/acha murdererהוּאhuisוִידַעְתֶּםvi/da/TEMand you knowכִּיkithatכׇל־רֹצֵחַkhol-ro/TSE/achevery murdererאֵיןennoלוֹlohasחַיֵּיchay/YEthe life ofעוֹלָםo/LAMeternityעֹמְדִיםom/DIMremainingבּוֹ׃boin him

    Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

16. 16

    בְּזֹאתbe/ZOTby thisנָבִיןna/VINwe understandאֶת־אַהֲבַתet-a/ha/VATthe love ofאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodכִּיkithatהוּאhuheנָתַןna/TANgaveאֶת־נַפְשׁוֹet-naf/SHOhis soulבַּעֲדֵנוּba/a/DE/nufor usוְעָלֵינוּve/a/LE/nuand it is on usגַּם־אֲנַחְנוּgam-a/NACH/nuwe alsoלָתֵתla/TETto giveאֶת־נַפְשֹׁתֵינוּet-naf/sho/TE/nuour soulsבְּעַדbe/ADforהָאַחִים׃ha/a/CHIMthe brothers

    Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

17. 17

    וְאִישׁve/ISHand a manאֲשֶׁר־לוֹa/SHER-lowho hasנִכְסֵיnikh/SEthe goods ofהָעוֹלָםha/o/LAMthe worldהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוְהוּאve/HUand heרֹאֶהro/Eseesאֶת־אָחִיוet-a/CHIVhis brotherחָסֵרcha/SERin needוְקֹפֵץve/ko/FETSand shutsאֶת־רַחֲמָיוet-ra/cha/MAYVhis compassionמִמֶּנּוּmim/MEN/nufrom himאֵיךְekhhowתִּשְׁכֹּןtish/KONwill dwellבּוֹboin himאַהֲבַתa/ha/VATthe love ofאֱלֹהִים׃e/lo/HIMGod

    But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18. 18

    בָּנַיba/NAYmy childrenהַקְּטַנִּיםhak/ke/tan/NIMlittleאַל־נֶאֱהַבal-ne/e/HAVlet us not loveבְּדָבָרbe/da/VARin wordוְלֹאve/LOand notבְּלָשׁוֹןbe/la/SHONin tongueכִּיkibutאִם־בְּמַעֲשֶׂהim-be/ma/a/SErather in deedוּבֶאֱמֶת׃u/ve/e/METand in truth

    My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

19. 19

    וּבְזֹאתu/ve/ZOTand by thisנֵדַעne/DAwe knowכִּיkithatמִן־הָאֱמֶתmin-ha/e/METof the truthאֲנָחְנוּa/NACH/nuwe areוּלְפָנָיוu/le/fa/NAYVand before Himנַשְׁקִיטnash/KITwe will quietאֶת־לִבּוֹתֵינוּ׃et-lib/bo/te/NUour hearts

    And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

20. 20

    כִּיkiforאִם־לִבֵּנוּim-lib/BE/nuif our heartיַרְשִׁיעַyar/SHI/acondemnsאֹתָנוּo/TA/nuusהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMGodגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreaterהוּאhuisמִלִּבֵּנוּmil/lib/BE/nuthan our heartוְיֹדֵעַve/yo/DE/aand knowsאֶת־הַכֹּל׃et-hak/KOLall things

    For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

21. 21

    יְדִידַיye/di/DAYmy belovedאִם־לִבֵּנוּim-lib/BE/nuif our heartלֹא־יַרְשִׁיעֵנוּlo-yar/shi/e/NUdoes not condemn usאָזazthenיֶשׁ־לָנוּyesh-LA/nuwe haveבִּטְחָהbit/CHAconfidenceאֶל־הָאֱלֹהִים׃el-ha/e/lo/HIMto God

    Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

22. 22

    וְכׇל־אֲשֶׁרve/KHOL-a/SHERand whateverנִשְׁאַלnish/ALwe askנִקַּחnik/KACHwe might receiveמֵאִתּוֹme/it/TOfrom Himכִּי־נִשְׁמֹרki-nish/MORfor we keepאֶת־מִצְוֹתָיוet-mits/vo/TAYVHis commandmentsוְנַעֲשֶׂהve/na/a/SEand doאֶת־הַטּוֹבet-hat/TOVthe goodבְּעֵינָיו׃be/e/NAYVin His eyes

    And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

23. 23

    וְזֹאתve/ZOTand this isמִצְוָתוֹmits/va/TOHis commandmentלְהַאֲמִיןle/ha/a/MINto believeבְּשֵׁם־בְּנוֹbe/SHEM-be/NOin the name of His SonיֵשׁוּעַYe/SHU/aJesusהַמָּשִׁיחַham/Ma/SHI/achthe Messiahוּלְאַהֲבָהu/le/a/ha/VAand to loveאִישׁisha manאֶת־אָחִיוet-a/CHIVhis brotherכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasצִוָּנוּ׃tsiv/VA/nuHe commanded us

    And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

24. 24

    וְהַשֹּׁמֵרve/hash/sho/MERand the one who keepsאֶת־מִצְוֹתָיוet-mits/vo/TAYVHis commandmentsשֹׁכֵןsho/KHENdwellsבּוֹboin Himוְהוּאve/HUand Heבוֹvoin himוּבְזֹאתu/ve/ZOTand by thisנֵדַעne/DAwe knowכִּי־הוּאki-huthat Heעֹמֵדo/MEDremainsבָּנוּBA/nuin usבָּרוּחַba/RU/achby the Spiritאֲשֶׁר־נָתַןa/SHER-na/TANthat He gaveלָנוּ׃LA/nuus

    And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
