   And it came to pass that Amulon did gain favor in the eyes of the king of the Lamanites; therefore, the king of the Lamanites granted unto him and his brethren that they should be appointed teachers over his people, yea, even over the people who were in the land of Shemlon, and in the land of Shilom, and in the land of Amulon.

   For the Lamanites had taken possession of all these lands; therefore, the king of the Lamanites had appointed kings over all these lands.

   וְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the nameמֶלֶךְME/lekhof the kingהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the LamanitesלָמָןLA/Manwas Lamanכְּשֵׁםke/SHEMafter the nameאָבִיוa/VIVof his fatherעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeנִקְרָאnik/RAhe was calledמֶלֶךְME/lekhkingלָמָןLA/manLamanוַיִּמְלֹךְvay/yim/LOKHand he reignedעַל־עַםal-amover a peopleרָב׃ravnumerous

   And now the name of the king of the Lamanites was Laman, being called after the name of his father; and therefore he was called king Laman. And he was king over a numerous people.

   וַיָּשֶׂםvay/YA/semand appointedמוֹרִיםmo/RIMteachersמֵאֲחֵיme/a/CHEof the brethrenעָמוּלוֹןA/mu/lonof Amulonבְּכׇל־אֶרֶץbe/KHOL-E/retsin every landאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichיָרְשׁוּya/re/SHUpossessedעַמּוֹam/MOhis peopleוְכָכָהve/KHA/khaand thusהֵחֵלּוּhe/CHEL/lubeganלְלַמֵּדle/lam/MEDto teachלְשׁוֹןle/SHONthe languageנֶפִיNE/fiof Nephiלְכׇל־עַםle/KHOL-amto all the peopleהַלָּמָנִים׃hal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanites

   And he appointed teachers of the brethren of Amulon in every land which was possessed by his people; and thus the language of Nephi began to be taught among all the people of the Lamanites.

   And they were a people friendly one with another; nevertheless they knew not God; neither did the brethren of Amulon teach them anything concerning the Lord their God, neither the law of Moses; nor did they teach them the words of Abinadi;

   אַךְakhbutלִמְּדוּםlim/me/DUMthey taught themלִשְׁמֹרlish/MORto keepסִפְרֵיהֶםsif/re/HEMtheir recordsוְלִכְתֹּבve/likh/TOVand to writeאִישׁishoneאֶל־רֵעֵהוּ׃el-re/E/huto another

   But they taught them that they should keep their record, and that they might write one to another.

   וַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luand beganהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesלִרְבּוֹתlir/BOTto increaseבְּעֹשֶׁרbe/O/sherin richesוַיִּסְחֲרוּvay/yis/cha/RUand tradedאִישׁishoneאֶת־רֵעֵהוּet-re/E/huwith anotherוַיִּגְדְּלוּvay/yig/de/LUand waxed greatמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyוַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUand they wereלְעַםle/AMa peopleעָרוּםa/RUMcunningוְחָכָםve/cha/KHAMand wiseבְּחׇכְמַתbe/chokh/MATafter the wisdomהָעוֹלָםha/o/LAMof the worldעַםama peopleעָרוּםa/RUMcunningמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyוַיִּשְׂמְחוּvay/yis/me/CHUand delightedבְּכׇל־רֶשַׁעbe/KHOL-RE/shain all manner of wickednessוְשָׁלָלve/sha/LALand plunderזוּלַתzu/LATexceptבֵּיןbenamongאֲחֵיהֶם׃a/che/HEMtheir own brethren

   And thus the Lamanites began to increase in riches, and began to trade one with another and wax great, and began to be a cunning and a wise people, as to the wisdom of the world, yea, a very cunning people, delighting in all manner of wickedness and plunder, except it were among their own brethren.

   And now it came to pass that Amulon began to exercise authority over Alma and his brethren, and began to persecute him, and cause that his children should persecute their children.

   For Amulon knew Alma, that he had been one of the king’s priests, and that it was he that believed the words of Abinadi and was driven out before the king, and therefore he was wroth with him; for he was subject to king Laman, yet he exercised authority over them, and put tasks upon them, and put task-masters over them.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּיkithatגָדְלוּga/de/LUwere greatצָרוֹתֵיהֶםtsa/ro/te/HEMtheir afflictionsמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyוַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luthat they beganלִזְעֹקliz/OKto cryאֶל־אֱלֹהִיםel-e/lo/HIMto Godבְּחׇזְקָה׃be/choz/KAmightily

    And it came to pass that so great were their afflictions that they began to cry mightily to God.

11. 11

    וַיְצַוֵּםvay/tsav/VEMand commanded themעָמוּלוֹןA/mu/lonAmulonלַחְדֹּלlach/DOLto ceaseמִזַּעֲקָתָםmiz/za/a/ka/TAMfrom their criesוַיַּפְקֵדvay/yaf/KEDand he appointedעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMover themשֹׁמְרִיםshom/RIMguardsלְשׇׁמְרָםle/shom/RAMto watch themוְכׇל־אֲשֶׁרve/KHOL-a/SHERand whosoeverיִמָּצֵאyim/ma/TSEbe foundקֹרֵאko/REcallingבְשֵׁםve/SHEMupon the nameאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godמוֹתmotsurelyיוּמָת׃yu/MATshall be put to death

    And Amulon commanded them that they should stop their cries; and he put guards over them to watch them, that whosoever should be found calling upon God should be put to death.

    וְאַלְמָאve/AL/maand Almaוְעַמּוֹve/am/MOand his peopleלֹא־הֵרִימוּlo-he/RI/mudid not raiseקוֹלָםko/LAMtheir voicesאֶל־יְהוָהel-Adonaito Adonaiאֱלֹהֵיהֶםe/lo/he/HEMtheir Godאַךְakhbutשָׁפְכוּsha/fe/KHUpoured outאֶת־לִבָּםet-lib/BAMtheir heartsלְפָנָיוle/fa/NAYVbefore Himוַיֵּדַעvay/YE/daand He knewאֶת־מַחְשְׁבוֹתet-mach/she/VOTthe thoughtsלְבָבָם׃le/va/VAMof their hearts

    And Alma and his people did not raise their voices to the Lord their God, but did pour out their hearts to him; and he did know the thoughts of their hearts.

13. 13

    וַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOand cameקוֹל־יְהוָהkol-Adonaithe voice of Adonaiאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themבְּצָרָתָםbe/tsa/ra/TAMin their afflictionsלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingשְׂאוּse/Ulift upרֹאשְׁכֶםro/she/KHEMyour headsוְהִתְנַחֲמוּve/hit/na/cha/MUand be comfortedכִּיkiforיָדַעְתִּיya/DA/tiI knowאֶת־הַבְּרִיתet-hab/be/RITthe covenantאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichכְּרַתֶּםke/rat/TEMyou madeלִיlito meוְאֶכְרֹתve/ekh/ROTand I will cutבְּרִיתbe/RITa covenantאֶת־עַמִּיet-am/MIwith My peopleוְאַצִּילֵםve/ats/tsi/LEMand deliver themמֵעַבְדוּת׃me/av/DUTout of bondage

    And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came to them in their afflictions, saying: Lift up your heads and be of good comfort, for I know of the covenant which ye have made unto me; and I will covenant with my people and deliver them out of bondage.

14. 14

    וְגַם־אָקֵלve/GAM-a/KELand I will also easeאֶת־הַמַּשָּׂאet-ham/mas/SAthe burdensהַמּוּשָׂםham/mu/SAMwhich are placedעַל־שִׁכְמְכֶםal-shikh/me/KHEMupon your shouldersעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERuntilלֹא־תָחוּשׁוּlo-ta/chu/SHUyou cannot feelאוֹתוֹo/TOthemעַל־גַּבְּכֶםal-gab/be/KHEMupon your backsבְּעוֹדְכֶםbe/od/KHEMwhile you areבְּעַבְדוּתbe/av/DUTin bondageוְזֹאתve/ZOTand thisאֶעֱשֶׂהe/e/SEwill I doלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatתִּהְיוּtih/YUyou may beלִיliunto Meלְעֵדִיםle/e/DIMfor witnessesבָּאַחֲרִיתba/a/cha/RIThereafterוּלְמַעַןu/le/MA/anand thatיָדֹעַya/DO/aof a suretyתֵּדְעוּted/Uyou may knowכִּיkithatאֲנִיa/NIIיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodפּוֹקֵדpo/KEDvisitאֶת־עַמִּיet-am/MIMy peopleבְּצָרָתָם׃be/tsa/ra/TAMin their afflictions

    And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.

15. 15

    וַיֵּקַלvay/ye/KALand were lightenedהַמַּשָּׂאham/mas/SAthe burdensאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהוּשַׂםhu/SAMwere placedעַל־אַלְמָאal-AL/maupon Almaוְאֶחָיוve/e/CHAYVand his brethrenוַיְחַזֵּקvay/chaz/ZEKand strengthenedיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאוֹתָםo/TAMthemוַיִּשְׂאוּvay/yis/Uand they boreאֶת־מַשָּׂאָםet-mas/sa/AMtheir burdensבְּקַלּוּתbe/kal/LUTwith easeוַיִּכָּנְעוּvay/yik/ka/ne/Uand they submittedבְּשִׂמְחָהbe/sim/CHAcheerfullyוּבְאֹרֶךְu/ve/O/rekhand with patienceרוּחַRU/achof spiritלְכׇל־רְצוֹןle/KHOL-re/TSONto all the willיְהוָה׃Adonaiof Adonai

    And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.

16. 16

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּי־גָדְלָהki-ga/de/LAfor great wasאֱמוּנָתָםe/mu/na/TAMtheir faithוְאֹרֶךְve/O/rekhand the patienceרוּחָםru/CHAMof their spiritוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOthat cameקוֹל־יְהוָהkol-Adonaithe voice of Adonaiאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themשֵׁנִיתshe/NITagainלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingהִתְנַחֲמוּhit/na/cha/MUbe comfortedכִּיkiforמָחָרma/CHARon the morrowאַצִּילְכֶםats/tsi/le/KHEMI will deliver youמֵעַבְדוּת׃me/av/DUTout of bondage

    And it came to pass that so great was their faith and their patience that the voice of the Lord came unto them again, saying: Be of good comfort, for on the morrow I will deliver you out of bondage.

17. 17

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand He saidאֶל־אַלְמָאel-AL/maunto Almaאַתָּהat/TAyouתֵּלֵךְte/LEKHshall goלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהָעָם־הַזֶּהha/AM-haz/ZEthis peopleוַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iאֵלֵךְe/LEKHwill goאִתְּךָit/te/KHAwith youוְאַצִּילve/ats/TSILand deliverאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisמֵעַבְדוּת׃me/av/DUTout of bondage

    And he said unto Alma: Thou shalt go before this people, and I will go with thee and deliver this people out of bondage.

18. 18

    וַיֶּאֱסֹףvay/ye/e/SOFand gathered togetherאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaוְעַמּוֹve/am/MOand his peopleאֶת־צֹאנָםet-tso/NAMtheir flocksבַּלַּיְלָהbal/LAY/lain the night timeוְגַםve/GAMand alsoמִדְּגָנָםmid/de/ga/NAMof their grainכׇּל־הַלַּיְלָהkol-hal/LAY/laall the nightאָסְפוּa/se/FUthey gatheredאֶת־צֹאנָם׃et-tso/NAMtheir flocks

    Now it came to pass that Alma and his people in the night-time gathered their flocks together, and also of their grain; yea, even all the night-time were they gathering their flocks together.

19. 19

    וּבַבֹּקֶרu/vab/BO/kerand in the morningהִפִּילhip/PILcaused to fallיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiתַּרְדֵּמָהtar/de/MAa deep sleepעַל־הַלָּמָנִיםal-Hal/la/ma/NIMupon the Lamanitesוְכׇל־נֹגְשֵׂיהֶםve/KHOL-nog/se/HEMand all their taskmastersנָפְלוּna/fe/LUfellבְּתַרְדֵּמָהbe/tar/de/MAin a sleepעֲמֻקָּה׃a/muk/KAdeep

    And in the morning the Lord caused a deep sleep to come upon the Lamanites, yea, and all their task-masters were in a profound sleep.

20. 20

    וַיֵּלֵךְvay/ye/LEKHand departedאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaוְעַמּוֹve/am/MOand his peopleהַמִּדְבָּרָהham/mid/BA/rainto the wildernessוַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenהָלְכוּha/le/KHUthey traveledכׇּל־הַיּוֹםkol-hay/YOMall the dayוַיַּחֲנוּvay/ya/cha/NUthey pitched their tentsבְּעֵמֶקbe/E/mekin a valleyוַיִּקְרְאוּvay/yik/re/Uand they calledלָעֵמֶקla/E/mekto the valleyאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaכִּי־הוּאki-hubecause heהִנְחָםhin/CHAMled themבַּמִּדְבָּר׃bam/mid/BARin the wilderness

    And Alma and his people departed into the wilderness; and when they had traveled all day they pitched their tents in a valley, and they called the valley Alma, because he led their way in the wilderness.

    וַיִּשְׁפְּכוּvay/yish/pe/KHUand they poured outתוֹדָתָםto/da/TAMtheir thanksלֵאלֹהִיםle/lo/HIMto Godבְּעֵמֶקbe/E/mekin the valleyאַלְמָאAL/maof Almaכִּיkibecauseהָיָהha/YAHe had beenרַב־חֶסֶדrav-CHE/sedabundantly mercifulאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themוַיָּקֵלvay/ya/KELand lightenedאֶת־מַשָּׂאָםet-mas/sa/AMtheir burdensוַיַּצִּילֵםvay/yats/tsi/LEMand delivered themמֵעַבְדוּתme/av/DUTout of bondageכִּיkiforהָיוּha/YUthey wereבְעַבְדוּתve/av/DUTin bondageוְאֵיןve/ENand there was no oneמוֹשִׁיעַmo/SHI/acould deliverזוּלַתzu/LATexceptיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֱלֹהֵיהֶם׃e/lo/he/HEMtheir God

    Yea, and in the valley of Alma they poured out their thanks to God because he had been merciful unto them, and eased their burdens, and had delivered them out of bondage; for they were in bondage, and none could deliver them except it were the Lord their God.

22. 22

    וַיּוֹדוּvay/yo/DUand gave thanksלֵאלֹהִיםle/lo/HIMto Godכׇּל־אַנְשֵׁיהֶםkol-an/she/HEMall their menוְכׇל־נְשֵׁיהֶםve/KHOL-ne/she/HEMand all their womenוְכׇל־יַלְדֵיהֶםve/KHOL-yal/de/HEMand all their childrenאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatיָדְעוּya/de/Uwere ableלְדַבֵּרle/dab/BERto speakנָשְׂאוּna/se/Ulifted upקוֹלָםko/LAMtheir voicesבִּתְהִלַּתbit/hil/LATin the praisesאֱלֹהֵיהֶם׃e/lo/he/HEMof their God

    And they gave thanks to God, yea, all their men and all their women and all their children that could speak lifted their voices in the praises of their God.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֶל־אַלְמָאel-AL/maunto Almaמַהֵרma/HERhastenוְצֵאve/TSEand departאַתָּהat/TAyouוְהָעָםve/ha/AMand the peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisמִן־הָאָרֶץmin-ha/A/retsfrom the landהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisכִּיkiforהֵקִיצוּhe/ki/TSUawakenedהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesוְרֹדְפִיםve/rod/FIMand pursueאַחֲרֶיךָa/cha/RE/khaafter youלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeצֵאtsego forthמִן־הָאָרֶץmin-ha/A/retsfrom the landהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisוַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iאֶעֱצֹרe/e/TSORwill stopאֶת־הַלָּמָנִיםet-Hal/la/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesבָּעֵמֶקba/E/mekin the valleyהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוְלֹאve/LOand notיוֹסִיפוּyo/SI/fushall continueלִרְדֹּףlir/DOFto pursueאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterהָעָם־הַזֶּה׃ha/AM-haz/ZEthis people

    And now the Lord said unto Alma: Haste thee and get thou and this people out of this land, for the Lamanites have awakened and do pursue thee; therefore get thee out of this land, and I will stop the Lamanites in this valley that they come no further in pursuit of this people.

24. 24

    וַיֵּצְאוּvay/yets/Uand they departedמִן־הָעֵמֶקmin-ha/E/mekout of the valleyוַיִּסְעוּvay/yis/Uand took their journeyבַמִּדְבָּר׃vam/mid/BARin the wilderness

    And it came to pass that they departed out of the valley, and took their journey into the wilderness.

    And after they had been in the wilderness twelve days they arrived in the land of Zarahemla; and king Mosiah did also receive them with joy.
