   Now Alma, having been warned of the Lord that the armies of king Noah would come upon them, and having made it known to his people, therefore they gathered together their flocks, and took of their grain, and departed into the wilderness before the armies of king Noah.

   And the Lord did strengthen them, that the people of king Noah could not overtake them to destroy them.

   וַיָּנוּסוּvay/ya/NU/suand they fledדֶּרֶךְDE/rekha journeyשְׁמֹנַתshe/mo/NATof eightיָמִיםya/MIMdaysבַּמִּדְבָּר׃bam/mid/BARin the wilderness

   And they fled eight days’ journey into the wilderness.

   וַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand they cameאֶל־אֶרֶץel-E/retsto a landיָפָהya/FAbeautifulוְנָעִימָהve/na/i/MAand pleasantמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyאֶרֶץE/retsa landמַיִםMA/yimof watersטְהוֹרִים׃te/ho/RIMpure

   And they came to a land, yea, even a very beautiful and pleasant land, a land of pure water.

   And they pitched their tents, and began to till the ground, and began to build buildings; yea, they were industrious, and did labor exceedingly.

   וַיַּחְפֹּץvay/yach/POTSand were desirousהָעָםha/AMthe peopleכִּיkithatיִהְיֶהyih/YEshould beאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaלְמֶלֶךְle/ME/lekha kingעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMover themכִּיkiforאָהוּבa/HUVbelovedהָיָהha/YAwas heבְּעֵינֵיbe/e/NEin the eyesעַמּוֹ׃am/MOof his people

   And the people were desirous that Alma should be their king, for he was beloved by his people.

   But he said unto them: Behold, it is not expedient that we should have a king; for thus saith the Lord: Ye shall not esteem one flesh above another, or one man shall not think himself above another; therefore I say unto you it is not expedient that ye should have a king.

   Nevertheless, if it were possible that ye could always have just men to be your kings it would be well for you to have a king.

   But remember the iniquity of king Noah and his priests; and I myself was caught in a snare, and did many things which were abominable in the sight of the Lord, which caused me sore repentance;

    אַךְakhneverthelessאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterצָרָהtsa/RAafflictionרַבָּהrab/BAmuchשָׁמַעsha/MAheardיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֶת־זַעֲקוֹתַיet-za/a/ko/TAYmy criesוַיַּעַןvay/YA/anand answeredאֶת־תְּפִלּוֹתַיet-te/fil/lo/TAYmy prayersוַיְשִׂימֵנִיvay/si/ME/niand made meלִכְלִיlikh/LIan instrumentבְּיָדוֹbe/ya/DOin His handלְהָבִיאle/ha/VIto bringרַבִּיםrab/BIMmanyמִכֶּםmik/KEMof youלְדַעַתle/DA/atto the knowledgeאֲמִתּוֹ׃a/mit/TOof His truth

    Nevertheless, after much tribulation, the Lord did hear my cries, and did answer my prayers, and has made me an instrument in his hands in bringing so many of you to a knowledge of his truth.

11. 11

    וְאַךְve/AKHand yetבָּזֹאתba/ZOTin thisלֹאlonotאֶתְפָּאֵרet/pa/ERI gloryכִּיkiforקָטֹנְתִּיka/TON/tiI am unworthyמִלְּהִתְפָּאֵרmil/le/hit/pa/ERto gloryבְּנַפְשִׁי׃be/naf/SHIof myself

    Nevertheless, in this I do not glory, for I am unworthy to glory of myself.

12. 12

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowאֹמַרo/MARI sayלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youעֻשַּׁקְתֶּםush/shak/TEMyou have been oppressedבְּיַדbe/YADby the handהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingנֹחַNO/achNoahוַתִּהְיוּvat/tih/YUand have beenבְעַבְדוּתve/av/DUTin bondageלוֹloto himוּלְכֹהֲנָיוu/le/kho/ha/NAYVand his priestsוַתּוּבְאוּvat/tuv/Uand have been broughtלְעָוֹןle/a/VONinto iniquityעַל־יָדָםal-ya/DAMby their handsוְכָכָהve/KHA/khaand thusנֶאֱסַרְתֶּםne/e/sar/TEMyou were boundבְּחַבְלֵיbe/chav/LEwith the bandsהָעָוֹן׃ha/a/VONof iniquity

    And now I say unto you, ye have been oppressed by king Noah, and have been in bondage to him and his priests, and have been brought into iniquity by them; therefore ye were bound with the bands of iniquity.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasנִצַּלְתֶּםnits/tsal/TEMyou have been deliveredבְּכֹחַbe/KHO/achby the powerאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godמִן־הַכְּבָלִיםmin-hak/ke/va/LIMout of the bondsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseמִיַּדmiy/YADfrom the handהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingנֹחַNO/achNoahוְעַמּוֹve/am/MOand his peopleוְגַםve/GAMand alsoמִכְּבָלֵיmik/ke/va/LEfrom the bondsהָעָוֹןha/a/VONof iniquityכֵּןkeneven soחָפַצְתִּיcha/FATS/tiI desireכִּיkithatתַעַמְדוּta/am/DUyou should stand fastבַּחֵרוּתba/che/RUTin the libertyהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichבָּהּbawhereinהוּשַׂמְתֶּםhu/sam/TEMyou have been madeחׇפְשִׁיםchof/SHIMfreeוְאַל־תִּבְטְחוּve/AL-tiv/te/CHUand trust notבְּאִישׁbe/ISHin a manלִמְלֹךְlim/LOKHto reignעֲלֵיכֶם׃a/le/KHEMover you

    And now as ye have been delivered by the power of God out of these bonds; yea, even out of the hands of king Noah and his people, and also from the bonds of iniquity, even so I desire that ye should stand fast in this liberty wherewith ye have been made free, and that ye trust no man to be a king over you.

    וְגַםve/GAMand alsoאַל־תִּבְטְחוּal-tiv/te/CHUtrust notבְּאִישׁbe/ISHin a manלִהְיוֹתlih/YOTto beמוֹרֶהmo/REa teacherאוֹoorמְשָׁרֵתme/sha/RETa ministerלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youזוּלַתzu/LATexceptאִם־הוּאim-huif he beאִישׁisha manאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godהַהֹלֵךְha/ho/LEKHwalkingבִּדְרָכָיוbid/ra/KHAYVin His waysוְשֹׁמֵרve/sho/MERand keepingמִצְוֹתָיו׃mits/vo/TAYVHis commandments

    And also trust no one to be your teacher nor your minister, except he be a man of God, walking in his ways and keeping his commandments.

15. 15

    כָּכָהKA/khathusלִמַּדlim/MADtaughtאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaאֶת־עַמּוֹet-am/MOhis peopleכִּיkithatיֶאֱהַבye/e/HAVshould loveכׇּל־אִישׁkol-ishevery manאֶת־רֵעֵהוּet-re/E/huhis neighborכְּנַפְשׁוֹke/naf/SHOas himselfוְלֹאve/LOand notתִהְיֶהtih/YEbeמְרִיבָהme/ri/VAcontentionבֵּינֵיהֶם׃be/ne/HEMamong them

    Thus did Alma teach his people, that every man should love his neighbor as himself, that there should be no contention among them.

16. 16

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהָיָהha/YAwasאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaכֹהֵןkho/HENthe priestגָּדוֹלga/DOLhighלָהֶםla/HEMunto themכִּי־הוּאki-hufor heיָסַדya/SADfoundedאֶת־עֲדָתָם׃et-a/da/TAMtheir church

    And now, Alma was their high priest, he being the founder of their church.

17. 17

    וְלֹאve/LOand notקִבֵּלkib/BELreceivedאִישׁishany manשִׁלְטוֹןshil/TONauthorityלִקְרֹאlik/ROto preachאוֹoorלְלַמֵּדle/lam/MEDto teachכִּי־אִםki-imexceptמֵאִתּוֹme/it/TOfrom himמֵאֱלֹהִיםme/e/lo/HIMfrom Godעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeקִדֵּשׁkid/DESHhe consecratedאֶת־כׇּל־כֹּהֲנֵיהֶםet-kol-ko/ha/ne/HEMall their priestsוְאֶת־כׇּל־מוֹרֵיהֶםve/ET-kol-mo/re/HEMand all their teachersוְלֹאve/LOand noneקֻדְּשׁוּkud/de/SHUwere consecratedכִּי־אִםki-imexceptאַנְשֵׁיan/SHEmenצֶדֶק׃TSE/dekof righteousness

    And it came to pass that none received authority to preach or to teach except it were by him from God. Therefore he consecrated all their priests and all their teachers; and none were consecrated except they were just men.

18. 18

    עַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeשָׁמְרוּsha/me/RUthey watchedעַל־עַמָּםal-am/MAMover their peopleוַיְכַלְכְּלוּםvay/khal/ke/LUMand nourished themבְּדִבְרֵיbe/div/REwith the wordsצֶדֶק׃TSE/dekof righteousness

    Therefore they did watch over their people, and did nourish them with things pertaining to righteousness.

19. 19

    וַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luand they beganלְהַצְלִיחַle/hats/LI/achto prosperמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landוַיִּקְרְאוּvay/yik/re/Uand they calledלָאָרֶץla/A/retsthe landהֵלָם׃HE/lamHelam

    And it came to pass that they began to prosper exceedingly in the land; and they called the land Helam.

20. 20

    וַיִּרְבּוּvay/yir/BUand they multipliedוַיַּצְלִיחוּvay/yats/LI/chuand prosperedמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyבְּאֶרֶץbe/E/retsin the landהֵלָםHE/lamof Helamוַיִּבְנוּvay/yiv/NUand they builtעִירira cityוַיִּקְרְאוּvay/yik/re/Uwhich they calledלָהּlaitעִירirthe cityהֵלָם׃HE/lamof Helam

    And it came to pass that they did multiply and prosper exceedingly in the land of Helam; and they built a city, which they called the city of Helam.

21. 21

    וְאוּלָםve/u/LAMneverthelessרָאָהra/AsawיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiלְנָכוֹןle/na/KHONfitלְיַסֵּרle/yas/SERto chastenאֶת־עַמּוֹet-am/MOHis peopleאַףafyeaיִבְחַןyiv/CHANHe triesאֶת־אֹרֶךְet-O/rekhthe patienceרוּחָםru/CHAMof their spiritוֶאֱמוּנָתָם׃ve/e/mu/na/TAMand their faith

    Nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and their faith.

22. 22

    וְאַךְve/AKHand yetכׇּל־הַבּוֹטֵחַkol-hab/bo/TE/achwhosoever puts his trustבּוֹboin Himיִנָּשֵׂאyin/na/SEshall be lifted upבַּיּוֹםbay/YOMat the dayהָאַחֲרוֹןha/a/cha/RONlastוְכֵןve/KHENand soהָיָהha/YAit wasלָעָםla/AMwith the peopleהַזֶּה׃haz/ZEthis

    Nevertheless—whosoever putteth his trust in him the same shall be lifted up at the last day. Yea, and thus it was with this people.

23. 23

    כִּיkiforהִנְנִיhin/NIbehold Iמַרְאֶהmar/Eshowלָכֶםla/KHEMyouכִּיkithatהוּבְאוּhuv/Uthey were broughtלְעַבְדוּתle/av/DUTinto bondageוְאֵיןve/ENand there was noneמוֹשִׁיעַmo/SHI/acould deliverלָהֶםla/HEMthemזוּלַתzu/LATexceptיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֱלֹהֵיהֶםe/lo/he/HEMtheir GodהוּאhuHeאֱלֹהֵיe/lo/HEthe GodאַבְרָהָםAv/ra/HAMof Abrahamוְיִצְחָקve/Yits/CHAKand Isaacוְיַעֲקֹב׃ve/Ya/a/KOVand Jacob

    For behold, I will show unto you that they were brought into bondage, and none could deliver them but the Lord their God, yea, even the God of Abraham and Isaac and of Jacob.

24. 24

    וַיּוֹשִׁיעֵםvay/yo/shi/EMand He delivered themוַיַּרְאֵםvay/yar/EMand He showed forthאֶת־כֹּחוֹet-ko/CHOHis powerהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLthe greatוַתִּגְדַּלvat/tig/DALand was greatשִׂמְחָתָם׃sim/cha/TAMtheir joy

    And it came to pass that he did deliver them, and he did show forth his mighty power unto them, and great were their rejoicings.

25. 25

    כִּיkiforהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdבִּהְיוֹתָםbih/yo/TAMbeingבְּאֶרֶץbe/E/retsin the landהֵלָםHE/lamof Helamבְּעִירbe/IRin the cityהֵלָםHE/lamof Helamבְּעׇבְדָםbe/ov/DAMwhile they tilledאֶת־הָאֲדָמָהet-ha/a/da/MAthe landסָבִיבsa/VIVround aboutוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdצְבָאtse/VAan armyהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesבִּגְבוּלbig/VULwas in the bordersהָאָרֶץ׃ha/A/retsof the land

    For behold, it came to pass that while they were in the land of Helam, yea, in the city of Helam, while tilling the land round about, behold an army of the Lamanites was in the borders of the land.

    וַיָּנוּסוּvay/ya/NU/suand fledאֲחֵיa/CHEthe brethrenאַלְמָאAL/maof Almaמִשְּׂדוֹתֵיהֶםmis/se/do/te/HEMfrom their fieldsוַיִּקָּהֲלוּvay/yik/ka/ha/LUand gathered themselves togetherבְּעִירbe/IRin the cityהֵלָםHE/lamof Helamוַיִּירְאוּvay/yi/re/Uand they fearedמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyמִפְּנֵיmip/pe/NEbecause ofמַרְאֵהmar/Ethe appearanceהַלָּמָנִים׃hal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanites

    Now it came to pass that the brethren of Alma fled from their fields, and gathered themselves together in the city of Helam; and they were much frightened because of the appearance of the Lamanites.

27. 27

    וַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went forthאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaוַיַּעֲמֹדvay/ya/a/MODand stoodבְּתוֹכָםbe/to/KHAMamong themוַיְחַזְּקֵםvay/chaz/ze/KEMand exhorted themכִּי־לֹאki-lothat notיִירָאוּyi/RA/uthey should fearוְכִיve/KHIbut thatיִזְכְּרוּyiz/ke/RUthey should rememberאֶת־יְהוָהet-AdonaiAdonaiאֱלֹהֵיהֶםe/lo/he/HEMtheir Godוְהוּאve/HUand Heיוֹשִׁיעֵם׃yo/shi/EMwould deliver them

    But Alma went forth and stood among them, and exhorted them that they should not be frightened, but that they should remember the Lord their God and he would deliver them.

28. 28

    וַיַּשְׁקִיטוּvay/yash/ki/TUand they hushedאֶת־פַּחְדָּםet-pach/DAMtheir fearsוַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luand beganלִזְעֹקliz/OKto cryאֶל־יְהוָהel-Adonaiunto Adonaiכִּיkithatיְרַכֵּךְye/rak/KEKHHe would softenאֶת־לֵבet-levthe heartsהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיַחְמְלוּyach/me/LUthey would spareעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themוְעַל־נְשֵׁיהֶםve/AL-ne/she/HEMand upon their wivesוְעַל־טַפָּם׃ve/AL-tap/PAMand upon their children

    Therefore they hushed their fears, and began to cry unto the Lord that he would soften the hearts of the Lamanites, that they would spare them, and their wives, and their children.

    וַיְרַכֵּךְvay/rak/KEKHand softenedיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֶת־לֵבet-levthe heartsהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesוַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand went forthאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaוְאֶחָיוve/e/CHAYVand his brethrenוַיִּתְּנוּvay/yit/te/NUand gaveאֶת־נַפְשָׁםet-naf/SHAMthemselvesבְּיָדָםbe/ya/DAMinto their handsוַיִּירְשׁוּvay/yi/re/SHUand possessedהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesאֶת־אֶרֶץet-E/retsthe landהֵלָם׃HE/lamof Helam

    And it came to pass that the Lord did soften the hearts of the Lamanites. And Alma and his brethren went forth and delivered themselves up into their hands; and the Lamanites took possession of the land of Helam.

    וְצִבְאוֹתve/tsiv/OTand the armiesהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichרָדְפוּra/de/FUpursuedאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterעַםamthe peopleהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingלִמְהִיLIM/hiLimhiתָּעוּta/Uwanderedבַמִּדְבָּרvam/mid/BARin the wildernessיָמִיםya/MIMdaysרַבִּים׃rab/BIMmany

    Now the armies of the Lamanites, which had followed after the people of king Limhi, had been lost in the wilderness for many days.

    וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdמָצְאוּma/tse/Uthey foundאֶת־כֹּהֲנֵיet-ko/ha/NEthe priestsהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingנֹחַNO/achNoahבְּמָקוֹםbe/ma/KOMin a placeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichקָרְאוּka/re/Uthey calledלוֹloitעָמוּלוֹןA/mu/lonAmulonוַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luand they beganלָרֶשֶׁתla/RE/shetto possessאֶת־אֶרֶץet-E/retsthe landעָמוּלוֹןA/mu/lonof Amulonוַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luand beganלַעֲבֹדla/a/VODto tillאֶת־הָאֲדָמָה׃et-ha/a/da/MAthe ground

    And behold, they had found those priests of king Noah, in a place which they called Amulon; and they had begun to possess the land of Amulon and had begun to till the ground.

32. 32

    וְשֵׁםve/SHEMand the nameרֹאשׁroshof the leaderהַכֹּהֲנִיםhak/ko/ha/NIMof the priestsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseעָמוּלוֹן׃A/mu/lonAmulon

    Now the name of the leader of those priests was Amulon.

33. 33

    וַיִּתְחַנֵּןvay/yit/chan/NENand pleadedעָמוּלוֹןA/mu/lonAmulonאֶל־הַלָּמָנִיםel-Hal/la/ma/NIMwith the Lamanitesוַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand he sentגַּםgamalsoאֶת־נְשֵׁיהֶםet-ne/she/HEMtheir wivesבְּנוֹתbe/NOTthe daughtersהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesלְהִתְחַנֵּןle/hit/chan/NENto pleadאֶל־אֲחֵיהֶןel-a/che/HENwith their brethrenלְבִלְתִּיle/vil/TInot toיַשְׁמִידוּyash/MI/dudestroyאֶת־בַּעְלֵיהֶן׃et-ba/le/HENtheir husbands

    And it came to pass that Amulon did plead with the Lamanites; and he also sent forth their wives, who were the daughters of the Lamanites, to plead with their brethren, that they should not destroy their husbands.

34. 34

    וַיְרַחֲמוּvay/ra/cha/MUand had compassionהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesעַל־עָמוּלוֹןal-A/mu/lonupon Amulonוְעַל־אֶחָיוve/AL-e/CHAYVand upon his brethrenוְלֹאve/LOand did notהִשְׁמִידוּםhish/mi/DUMdestroy themבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofנְשֵׁיהֶם׃ne/she/HEMtheir wives

    And the Lamanites had compassion on Amulon and his brethren, and did not destroy them, because of their wives.

35. 35

    וַיִּתְחַבְּרוּvay/yit/chab/be/RUand joinedעָמוּלוֹןA/mu/lonAmulonוְאֶחָיוve/e/CHAYVand his brethrenאֶל־הַלָּמָנִיםel-Hal/la/ma/NIMto the Lamanitesוַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUand they wereהֹלְכִיםhol/KHIMwalkingבַּמִּדְבָּרbam/mid/BARin the wildernessלְבַקֵּשׁle/vak/KESHto seekאֶת־אֶרֶץet-E/retsthe landנֶפִיNE/fiof Nephiוַיִּמְצְאוּvay/yim/tse/Uand discoveredאֶת־אֶרֶץet-E/retsthe landהֵלָםHE/lamof Helamאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich wasיָרְשׁוּya/re/SHUpossessed byאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaוְאֶחָיו׃ve/e/CHAYVand his brethren

    And Amulon and his brethren did join the Lamanites, and they were traveling in the wilderness in search of the land of Nephi when they discovered the land of Helam, which was possessed by Alma and his brethren.

36. 36

    וַיַּבְטִיחוּvay/yav/ti/CHUand promisedהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesלְאַלְמָאle/AL/maunto Almaוּלְאֶחָיוu/le/e/CHAYVand his brethrenכִּי־אִםki-imthat ifיַרְאוּyar/Uthey would showלָהֶםla/HEMthemאֶת־הַדֶּרֶךְet-had/DE/rekhthe wayהַהֹלֶכֶתha/ho/LE/khetwhich ledאֶל־אֶרֶץel-E/retsto the landנֶפִיNE/fiof Nephiוְנָתְנוּve/na/te/NUthey would grantלָהֶםla/HEMthemאֶת־חַיֵּיהֶםet-chay/ye/HEMtheir livesוְחֵרוּתָם׃ve/che/ru/TAMand their liberty

    And it came to pass that the Lamanites promised unto Alma and his brethren, that if they would show them the way which led to the land of Nephi that they would grant unto them their lives and their liberty.

37. 37

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterהֶרְאָהher/AshowedאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaאֶת־הַדֶּרֶךְet-had/DE/rekhthe wayהַהֹלֶכֶתha/ho/LE/khetthat ledאֶל־אֶרֶץel-E/retsto the landנֶפִיNE/fiof Nephiוְלֹאve/LOand notשָׁמְרוּsha/me/RUkeptהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesאֶת־הַבְטָחָתָםet-hav/ta/cha/TAMtheir promiseוַיָּשִׂימוּvay/ya/SI/muand placedשֹׁמְרִיםshom/RIMguardsסָבִיבsa/VIVround aboutלְאֶרֶץle/E/retsthe landהֵלָםHE/lamof Helamעַל־אַלְמָאal-AL/maover Almaוְאֶחָיו׃ve/e/CHAYVand his brethren

    But after Alma had shown them the way that led to the land of Nephi the Lamanites would not keep their promise; but they set guards round about the land of Helam, over Alma and his brethren.

38. 38

    וְיֶתֶרve/YE/terand the remainderהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesהָלְכוּha/le/KHUwentלְאֶרֶץle/E/retsto the landנֶפִיNE/fiof Nephiוּמִקְצָתָםu/mik/tsa/TAMand a part of themשָׁבוּSHA/vureturnedלְאֶרֶץle/E/retsto the landהֵלָםHE/lamof Helamוַיָּבִיאוּvay/ya/VI/uand they broughtגַםgamalsoאֶת־נְשֵׁיet-ne/SHEthe wivesהַשּׁוֹמְרִיםhash/shom/RIMof the guardsוְאֶת־טַפָּםve/ET-tap/PAMand their childrenאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoנִשְׁאֲרוּnish/a/RUremainedבָאָרֶץ׃va/A/retsin the land

    And the remainder of them went to the land of Nephi; and a part of them returned to the land of Helam, and also brought with them the wives and the children of the guards who had been left in the land.

39. 39

    וַיִּתֵּןvay/yit/TENand grantedמֶלֶךְME/lekhthe kingהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesלְעָמוּלוֹןle/A/mu/lonto Amulonלִהְיוֹתlih/YOTto beמֶלֶךְME/lekha kingוּמוֹשֵׁלu/mo/SHELand a rulerעַל־עַמּוֹal-am/MOover his peopleאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoבְּאֶרֶץbe/E/retsin the landהֵלָםHE/lamof Helamוְאַךְve/AKHyetלֹא־יִהְיֶהlo-yih/YEthere should not beלוֹlounto himכֹּחַKO/achpowerלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto doדָּבָרda/VARanythingנֶגֶדNE/gedagainstרְצוֹןre/TSONthe willמֶלֶךְME/lekhof the kingהַלָּמָנִים׃hal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanites

    And the king of the Lamanites had granted unto Amulon that he should be a king and a ruler over his people, who were in the land of Helam; nevertheless he should have no power to do anything contrary to the will of the king of the Lamanites.
