   And now it came to pass that Zeniff conferred the kingdom upon Noah, one of his sons; therefore Noah began to reign in his stead; and he did not walk in the ways of his father.

   For behold, he did not keep the commandments of God, but he did walk after the desires of his own heart. And he had many wives and concubines. And he did cause his people to commit sin, and do that which was abominable in the sight of the Lord. Yea, and they did commit whoredoms and all manner of wickedness.

   And he laid a tax of one fifth part of all they possessed, a fifth part of their gold and of their silver, and a fifth part of their ziff, and of their copper, and of their brass and their iron; and a fifth part of their fatlings; and also a fifth part of all their grain.

   And all this did he take to support himself, and his wives and his concubines; and also his priests, and their wives and their concubines; thus he had changed the affairs of the kingdom.

   וַיָּסַרvay/YA/sarand he removedאֶת־כׇּל־הַכֹּהֲנִיםet-kol-hak/ko/ha/NIMall the priestsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhomקִדְּשָׁםkid/de/SHAMconsecrated themאָבִיוa/VIVhis fatherוַיְקַדֵּשׁvay/kad/DESHand consecratedחֲדָשִׁיםcha/da/SHIMnew onesתַּחְתָּםtach/TAMin their steadאֶת־אֲשֶׁרet-a/SHERthose whoגָּבְהוּga/ve/HUwere lifted upבְּגַאֲוַתbe/ga/a/VATin the prideלִבָּם׃lib/BAMof their hearts

   For he put down all the priests that had been consecrated by his father, and consecrated new ones in their stead, such as were lifted up in the pride of their hearts.

   וְכֵןve/KHENand thusנִתְמְכוּnit/me/KHUthey were supportedבְּעַצְלוּתָםbe/ats/lu/TAMin their lazinessוּבַעֲבוֹדַתu/va/a/vo/DATand in the worshipאֱלִילֵיהֶםe/li/le/HEMof their idolsוּבִזְנוּתָםu/viz/nu/TAMand in their whoredomsבַּמִּסִּיםbam/mis/SIMby the taxesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichשָׂםsamlaidנֹחַNO/achNoahהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingעַל־עַמּוֹal-am/MOover his peopleוְכֵןve/KHENthusעָמְלוּa/me/LUlaboredהָעָםha/AMthe peopleמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyלִתְמֹךְlit/MOKHto supportבָּעָוֶל׃ba/A/veliniquity

   Yea, and thus they were supported in their laziness, and in their idolatry, and in their whoredoms, by the taxes which king Noah had put upon his people; thus did the people labor exceedingly to support iniquity.

   וַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUand they wereגַם־הֵםgam-hemalso theyעוֹבְדֵיov/DEworshipersאֱלִילִיםe/li/LIMof idolsכִּיkibecauseנִפְתּוּnif/TUthey were deceivedבְּדִבְרֵיbe/div/REwith the wordsהֶבֶלHE/velof vanityוַחֲלָקוֹתva/cha/la/KOTand flatteriesהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingוְהַכֹּהֲנִיםve/hak/ko/ha/NIMand the priestsכִּיkiforדִּבְּרוּdib/be/RUthey spokeאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themחֲלָקוֹת׃cha/la/KOTflatteries

   Yea, and they also became idolatrous, because they were deceived by the vain and flattering words of the king and priests; for they did speak flattering things unto them.

   And it came to pass that king Noah built many elegant and spacious buildings; and he ornamented them with fine work of wood, and of all manner of precious things, of gold, and of silver, and of iron, and of brass, and of ziff, and of copper;

   וַיִּבֶןvay/YI/venand he builtלוֹlofor himselfגַּםgamalsoהֵיכָלhe/KHALa palaceרָחָבra/CHAVspaciousוְכִסֵּאve/khis/SEand a throneבְּתוֹכוֹbe/to/KHOin the midst thereofוְכֻלָּםve/khul/LAMall of which wereמֵעֵץme/ETSof woodיָקָרya/KARfineוַיְפָאֲרֵםvay/fa/a/REMand he ornamented themבְּזָהָבbe/za/HAVwith goldוָכֶסֶףva/KHE/sefand with silverוּבַחֲפָצִיםu/va/cha/fa/TSIMand with thingsיְקָרִים׃ye/ka/RIMprecious

   And he also built him a spacious palace, and a throne in the midst thereof, all of which was of fine wood and was ornamented with gold and silver and with precious things.

    וַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand he causedגַּםgamalsoאֶת־אֻמָּנָיוet-um/ma/NAYVhis workmenלַעֲשׂוֹתla/a/SOTto doכׇּל־מְלֶאכֶתkol-me/LE/khetall manner of workמַחֲשָׁבֶתma/cha/SHA/vetof fine artבְּתוֹךְbe/TOKHin the midstכׇּתְלֵיkot/LEof the wallsהַהֵיכָלha/he/KHALof the templeמֵעֵץme/ETSof woodיָקָרya/KARfineוּנְחוּשָׁהu/ne/chu/SHAand of copperוּנְחֹשֶׁת׃u/ne/CHO/shetand of brass

    And he also caused that his workmen should work all manner of fine work within the walls of the temple, of fine wood, and of copper, and of brass.

    וַיְצַףvay/TSAFand he overlaidאֶת־הַמּוֹשָׁבוֹתet-ham/mo/sha/VOTthe seatsהַמֻּבְדָּלִיםham/muv/da/LIMwhich were set apartלַכֹּהֲנִיםlak/ko/ha/NIMfor the priestsהַגְּדוֹלִיםhag/ge/do/LIMhighאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich wereמֵעַלme/ALaboveכׇּל־הַמּוֹשָׁבוֹתkol-ham/mo/sha/VOTall the seatsזָהָבza/HAVwith goldטָהוֹרta/HORpureוַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand he causedמִסְעָדmis/ADa breastworkלִפְנֵיהֶםlif/ne/HEMbefore themלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיָנִיחוּya/ni/CHUthey might restגְּוִיָּתָםge/viy/ya/TAMtheir bodiesוּזְרוֹעוֹתֵיהֶםu/ze/ro/o/te/HEMand their armsעָלָיוa/LAYVuponבְּדַבְּרָםbe/dab/be/RAMwhile they should speakדִּבְרֵיdiv/REwordsשֶׁקֶרSHE/kerof falsehoodוָהֶבֶלva/HE/veland vanityלְעַמּוֹ׃le/am/MOto his people

    And the seats which were set apart for the high priests, which were above all the other seats, he did ornament with pure gold; and he caused a breastwork to be built before them, that they might rest their bodies and their arms upon while they should speak lying and vain words to his people.

    וַיִּבֶןvay/YI/venand he builtמִגְדָּלmig/DALa towerקָרוֹבka/ROVnearלַהֵיכָלla/he/KHALthe templeמִגְדָּלmig/DALa towerגָּבֹהַּga/VO/ahhighמְאֹדme/ODveryעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERuntilיָכֹלya/KHOLhe couldלַעֲמֹדla/a/MODto standעַל־רֹאשׁוֹal-ro/SHOupon its topוּלְהַשְׁקִיףu/le/hash/KIFand overlookעַל־אֶרֶץal-E/retsupon the landשִׁילֹםSHI/lomof Shilomוְגַםve/GAMand alsoעַל־אֶרֶץal-E/retsupon the landשֶׁמְלוֹןSHEM/lonof Shemlonאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich wasבִּידֵיbi/DEin the handsהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesוְגַםve/GAMand evenיָכֹלya/KHOLhe couldלְהַשְׁקִיףle/hash/KIFlook overעַל־כׇּל־הָאָרֶץal-kol-ha/A/retsupon all the landסָבִיב׃sa/VIVround about

    And it came to pass that he built a tower near the temple; yea, a very high tower, even so high that he could stand upon the top thereof and overlook the land of Shilom, and also the land of Shemlon, which was possessed by the Lamanites; and he could even look over all the land round about.

    וַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand he builtבִּנְיָנִיםbin/ya/NIMbuildingsרַבִּיםrab/BIMmanyבְּאֶרֶץbe/E/retsin the landשִׁילֹםSHI/lomof Shilomוַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand he builtמִגְדָּלmig/DALa towerגָּדוֹלga/DOLgreatעַל־הַגִּבְעָהal-hag/giv/Aupon the hillמִצְּפוֹןmits/tse/FONnorthלְאֶרֶץle/E/retsof the landשִׁילֹםSHI/lomof Shilomאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהָיְתָהha/ye/TAhad beenמִקְלָטmik/LATa resortלִבְנֵיliv/NEfor the childrenנֶפִיNE/fiof Nephiבְּעֵתbe/ETat the timeנוּסָםnu/SAMthey fledמִן־הָאָרֶץmin-ha/A/retsfrom the landוְכֵןve/KHENand thusעָשָׂהa/SAhe didבָּעֹשֶׁרba/O/sherwith the richesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהִשִּׂיגhis/SIGhe obtainedמִמַּסmim/MASfrom the taxationעַמּוֹ׃am/MOof his people

    And it came to pass that he caused many buildings to be built in the land Shilom; and he caused a great tower to be built on the hill north of the land Shilom, which had been a resort for the children of Nephi at the time they fled out of the land; and thus he did do with the riches which he obtained by the taxation of his people.

    וַיָּשֶׂםvay/YA/semand he setלִבּוֹlib/BOhis heartעַל־עׇשְׁרוֹal-osh/ROupon his richesוַיְבַלvay/VALand he spentעִתּוֹit/TOhis timeבְּהוֹלֵלוּתbe/ho/le/LUTin riotous livingעִם־נָשָׁיוim-na/SHAYVwith his wivesוּפִילַגְשָׁיוu/fi/lag/SHAYVand his concubinesוְכֵןve/KHENand likewiseבִּלּוּbil/LUspentגַם־כֹּהֲנָיוgam-ko/ha/NAYValso his priestsעִתָּםit/TAMtheir timeעִם־זוֹנוֹת׃im-zo/NOTwith harlots

    And it came to pass that he placed his heart upon his riches, and he spent his time in riotous living with his wives and his concubines; and so did also his priests spend their time with harlots.

    וַיִּטַּעvay/yit/TAand he plantedכְּרָמִיםke/ra/MIMvineyardsסָבִיבsa/VIVround aboutבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landוַיִּבֶןvay/YI/venand he builtגִּתּוֹתgit/TOTwine pressesוַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand madeיַיִןYA/yinwineלָרֹבla/ROVin abundanceעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeהָיָהha/YAhe becameלְסֹבֵאle/so/VEa drinkerיַיִןYA/yinof wineוְגַםve/GAMand alsoעַמּוֹ׃am/MOhis people

    And it came to pass that he planted vineyards round about in the land; and he built wine-presses, and made wine in abundance; and therefore he became a wine-bibber, and also his people.

16. 16

    וַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luand beganהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesלָבוֹאla/VOto comeעַל־עַמּוֹal-am/MOupon his peopleבִּמְתֵיbim/TEin numbersמְעַטme/ATsmallוַיַּהַרְגוּםvay/ya/har/GUMand slew themבִּשְׂדוֹתֵיהֶםbis/do/te/HEMin their fieldsוּבְרָעוֹתָםu/ve/ra/o/TAMand while they were tendingאֶת־צֹאנָם׃et-tso/NAMtheir flocks

    And it came to pass that the Lamanites began to come in upon his people, upon small numbers, and to slay them in their fields, and while they were tending their flocks.

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentנֹחַNO/achNoahהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingשׁוֹמְרִיםshom/RIMguardsסָבִיבsa/VIVround aboutהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe landלִמְנֹעַlim/NO/ato preventאוֹתָםo/TAMthemאַךְakhbutלֹא־שָׁלַחlo-sha/LACHhe did not sendדֵּיdea sufficient numberשׁוֹמְרִיםshom/RIMof guardsוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand there cameעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesוַיַּהַרְגוּםvay/ya/har/GUMand slew themוַיִּנְהֲגוּvay/yin/ha/GUand drove offהַרְבֵּהhar/BEmanyמִצֹּאנָםmits/tso/NAMof their flocksמִן־הָאָרֶץmin-ha/A/retsfrom the landוְכֵןve/KHENthusהֵחֵלּוּhe/CHEL/lubeganהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesלְהַשְׁמִידָםle/hash/mi/DAMto destroy themוּלְהוֹצִיאu/le/ho/TSIand to exerciseשִׂנְאָתָםsin/a/TAMtheir hatredעֲלֵיהֶם׃a/le/HEMupon them

    And king Noah sent guards round about the land to keep them off; but he did not send a sufficient number, and the Lamanites came upon them and killed them, and drove many of their flocks out of the land; thus the Lamanites began to destroy them, and to exercise their hatred upon them.

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand sentנֹחַNO/achNoahהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֶת־צִבְאוֹתָיוet-tsiv/o/TAYVhis armiesעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMagainst themוַיִּדָּחוּvay/yid/da/CHUand they were drivenאָחוֹרa/CHORbackאוֹoorדָּחוּםda/CHUMthey drove them backלְעֵתle/ETfor a timeעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeשָׁבוּSHA/vuthey returnedשְׂמֵחִיםse/me/CHIMrejoicingבִּשְׁלָלָם׃bish/la/LAMin their spoil

    And it came to pass that king Noah sent his armies against them, and they were driven back, or they drove them back for a time; therefore, they returned rejoicing in their spoil.

    And now, because of this great victory they were lifted up in the pride of their hearts; they did boast in their own strength, saying that their fifty could stand against thousands of the Lamanites; and thus they did boast, and did delight in blood, and the shedding of the blood of their brethren, and this because of the wickedness of their king and priests.

    And it came to pass that there was a man among them whose name was Abinadi; and he went forth among them, and began to prophesy, saying: Behold, thus saith the Lord, and thus hath he commanded me, saying, Go forth, and say unto this people, thus saith the Lord—Wo be unto this people, for I have seen their abominations, and their wickedness, and their whoredoms; and except they repent I will visit them in mine anger.

    וְאִם־לֹאve/IM-loand if notיָשׁוּבוּya/SHU/vuthey shall repentוְיִפְנוּve/yif/NUand turnאֶל־יְהוָהel-Adonaiunto Adonaiאֱלֹהֵיהֶםe/lo/he/HEMtheir Godהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאֶתְּנֵםet/te/NEMI will deliver themבְּיַדbe/YADinto the handאֹיְבֵיהֶםoy/ve/HEMof their enemiesוְהָיוּve/ha/YUand they shall beלַעֲבָדִיםla/a/va/DIMfor servantsוְעֻנּוּve/un/NUand shall be afflictedבְּיַדbe/YADby the handאֹיְבֵיהֶם׃oy/ve/HEMof their enemies

    And except they repent and turn to the Lord their God, behold, I will deliver them into the hands of their enemies; yea, and they shall be brought into bondage; and they shall be afflicted by the hand of their enemies.

    וְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it shall beכִּיkithatיֵדְעוּyed/Uthey shall knowכִּי־אֲנִיki-a/NIthat I amיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֱלֹהֵיהֶםe/lo/he/HEMtheir Godאֵלela Godקַנָּאkan/NAjealousפֹּקֵדpo/KEDvisitingעֲוֹןa/VONthe iniquitiesעַמִּי׃am/MIof my people

    And it shall come to pass that they shall know that I am the Lord their God, and am a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of my people.

23. 23

    וְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it shall beכִּי־אִםki-imthat ifלֹא־יָשׁוּבlo-ya/SHUVshall not repentהָעָם־הַזֶּהha/AM-haz/ZEthis peopleוְיִפְנֶהve/yif/NEand turnאֶל־יְהוָהel-Adonaiunto Adonaiאֱלֹהָיוe/lo/HAYVhis Godוְהָיוּve/ha/YUthey shall beלַעֲבָדִיםla/a/va/DIMfor servantsוְאֵיןve/ENand there is noמַצִּילmats/TSILdelivererזוּלַתzu/LATexcept it beיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֵלelGodשַׁדַּי׃Shad/DAYAlmighty

    And it shall come to pass that except this people repent and turn unto the Lord their God, they shall be brought into bondage; and none shall deliver them, except it be the Lord the Almighty God.

24. 24

    וְהָיָהve/ha/YAand it shall beכִּיkithatיִזְעֲקוּyiz/a/KUthey shall cryאֵלַיe/LAYunto Meאֶתְאַפַּקet/ap/PAKI will be slowמִשְּׁמֹעַmish/she/MO/ato hearזַעֲקָתָםza/a/ka/TAMtheir criesוְאֶתְּנֵםve/et/te/NEMand I will suffer themלְהִנָּגֵףle/hin/na/GEFthat they be smittenלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאֹיְבֵיהֶם׃oy/ve/HEMtheir enemies

    Yea, and it shall come to pass that when they shall cry unto me I will be slow to hear their cries; yea, and I will suffer them that they be smitten by their enemies.

25. 25

    וְאִם־לֹאve/IM-loand if notיָשׁוּבוּya/SHU/vuthey shall repentבְּשַׂקbe/SAKin sackclothוָאֵפֶרva/E/ferand ashesוְיִזְעֲקוּve/yiz/a/KUand they shall cryבְּחׇזְקָהbe/choz/KAmightilyאֶל־יְהוָהel-Adonaiunto Adonaiאֱלֹהֵיהֶםe/lo/he/HEMtheir Godלֹאlonotאֶשְׁמַעesh/MAI will hearתְּפִלָּתָםte/fil/la/TAMtheir prayersוְלֹאve/LOand notאַצִּילֵםats/tsi/LEMwill I deliver themמִצָּרוֹתֵיהֶםmits/tsa/ro/te/HEMout of their afflictionsכֹּה־אָמַרko-a/MARthus saysיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiוְכֵןve/KHENand thusצִוָּנִי׃tsiv/VA/nihas He commanded me

    And except they repent in sackcloth and ashes, and cry mightily to the Lord their God, I will not hear their prayers, neither will I deliver them out of their afflictions; and thus saith the Lord, and thus hath he commanded me.

26. 26

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכְּדַבֵּרke/dab/BERwhile was speakingאֲבִינָדִיA/VI/na/diAbinadiאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe wordsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themוַיִּקְצְפוּvay/yik/tse/FUand they were wrothעָלָיוa/LAYVwith himוַיְבַקְשׁוּvay/vak/SHUand soughtלַהֲמִיתוֹla/ha/mi/TOto kill himוַיַּצִּלֵהוּvay/yats/tsi/LE/huand delivered himיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiמִיָּדָם׃miy/ya/DAMout of their hands

    Now it came to pass that when Abinadi had spoken these words unto them they were wroth with him, and sought to take away his life; but the Lord delivered him out of their hands.

27. 27

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּשְׁמֹעַkish/MO/awhen heardנֹחַNO/achNoahהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֶת־דִּבְרֵיet-div/REthe wordsאֲבִינָדִיA/VI/na/diof Abinadiאֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּרa/SHER-dib/BERwhich he spokeאֶל־הָעָםel-ha/AMunto the peopleוַיִּקְצֹףvay/yik/TSOFand he was wrothגַּם־הוּאgam-hualso heוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand he saidמִיmiwho isאֲבִינָדִיA/VI/na/diAbinadiכִּיkithatיִשְׁפֹּטyish/POThe should judgeאוֹתִיo/TImeוְאֶת־עַמִּיve/ET-am/MIand my peopleוּמִיu/MIor who isיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatיָבִיאya/VIshall bringעַל־עַמִּיal-am/MIupon my peopleצָרָהtsa/RAafflictionגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatכָּזֹאת׃ka/ZOTsuch

    Now when king Noah had heard of the words which Abinadi had spoken unto the people, he was also wroth; and he said: Who is Abinadi, that I and my people should be judged of him, or who is the Lord, that shall bring upon my people such great affliction?

    מְצַוֶּהme/tsav/VEcommandאֲנִיa/NIIלְהָבִיאle/ha/VIto bringאֶת־אֲבִינָדִיet-A/VI/na/diAbinadiהֵנָּהHEN/nahitherוַאֲמִיתֶנּוּva/a/mi/ten/NUthat I may slay himכִּיkiforדִּבֶּרdib/BERhe spokeהַדְּבָרִיםhad/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיָסִיתya/SIThe might stir upאֶת־עַמִּיet-am/MImy peopleלִכְעֹסlikh/OSto angerאִישׁishoneבְּרֵעֵהוּbe/re/E/huwith anotherוּלְהָקִיםu/le/ha/KIMand to raiseמְרִיבוֹתme/ri/VOTcontentionsבְּתוֹךְbe/TOKHamongעַמִּיam/MImy peopleלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeאֲמִיתֶנּוּ׃a/mi/ten/NUI will slay him

    I command you to bring Abinadi hither, that I may slay him, for he has said these things that he might stir up my people to anger one with another, and to raise contentions among my people; therefore I will slay him.

29. 29

    וְעֵינֵיve/e/NEand the eyesהָעָםha/AMof the peopleהָיוּha/YUwereעִוְרוֹתiv/ROTblindedעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeהִקְשׁוּhik/SHUthey hardenedאֶת־לִבָּםet-lib/BAMtheir heartsנֶגֶדNE/gedagainstדִּבְרֵיdiv/REthe wordsאֲבִינָדִיA/VI/na/diof Abinadiוַיְבַקְשׁוּvay/vak/SHUand they soughtמֵעֵתme/ETfrom the timeהַהִיאha/HIthatלְתׇפְשׂוֹle/tof/SOto take himוַיֶּקֶשׁvay/YE/keshand hardenedנֹחַNO/achNoahהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֶת־לִבּוֹet-lib/BOhis heartנֶגֶדNE/gedagainstדְּבַר־יְהוָהde/VAR-Adonaithe word of Adonaiוְלֹא־שָׁבve/LO-shavand he did not repentמִמַּעֲלָלָיוmim/ma/a/la/LAYVof his doingsהָרָעִים׃ha/ra/IMevil

    Now the eyes of the people were blinded; therefore they hardened their hearts against the words of Abinadi, and they sought from that time forward to take him. And king Noah hardened his heart against the word of the Lord, and he did not repent of his evil doings.
