   And it came to pass that we again began to establish the kingdom and we again began to possess the land in peace. And I caused that there should be weapons of war made of every kind, that thereby I might have weapons for my people against the time the Lamanites should come up again to war against my people.

   וָאָשִׂיםva/a/SIMand I setשׁוֹמְרִיםshom/RIMguardsסָבִיבsa/VIVround aboutהָאָרֶץha/A/retsthe landלְבִלְתִּיle/vil/TIthat notיָבֹאוּya/VO/ushould comeעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuupon usהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesפִּתְאֹםpit/OMsuddenlyלְהַשְׁמִידֵנוּle/hash/mi/DE/nuto destroy usוְכֵןve/KHENand thusשָׁמַרְתִּיsha/MAR/tiI guardedאֶת־עַמִּיet-am/MImy peopleוְאֶת־צֹאנִיve/ET-tso/NIand my flocksלְבִלְתִּיle/vil/TIthat notיִפְּלוּyip/pe/LUthey should fallבִּידֵיbi/DEinto the handsאֹיְבֵינוּ׃oy/VE/nuof our enemies

   And I set guards round about the land, that the Lamanites might not come upon us again unawares and destroy us; and thus I did guard my people and my flocks, and keep them from falling into the hands of our enemies.

   וַנִּירַשׁvan/ni/RASHand we inheritedאֶת־אֶרֶץet-E/retsthe landאֲבוֹתֵינוּa/vo/TE/nuof our fathersשָׁנִיםsha/NIMyearsרַבּוֹתrab/BOTmanyעֶשְׂרִיםes/RIMtwentyוּשְׁתַּיִםush/TA/yimand twoשָׁנָה׃sha/NAyears

   And it came to pass that we did inherit the land of our fathers for many years, yea, for the space of twenty and two years.

   וָאֲצַוva/a/TSAVand I causedאֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁיםet-ha/a/na/SHIMthe menלַעֲבֹדla/a/VODto tillאֶת־הָאֲדָמָהet-ha/a/da/MAthe groundוּלְגַדֵּלu/le/gad/DELand to raiseכׇּל־מִינֵיkol-mi/NEall mannerדָגָןda/GANof grainוּפְרִיu/fe/RIand fruitמִכׇּל־מִין׃mik/KOL-minof every kind

   And I did cause that the men should till the ground, and raise all manner of grain and all manner of fruit of every kind.

   And I did cause that the women should spin, and toil, and work, and work all manner of fine linen, yea, and cloth of every kind, that we might clothe our nakedness; and thus we did prosper in the land—thus we did have continual peace in the land for the space of twenty and two years.

   וַיָּמׇתvay/YA/motand diedלָמָןLA/manLamanהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingוַיִּמְלֹךְvay/yim/LOKHand reignedבְּנוֹbe/NOhis sonתַּחְתָּיוtach/TAYVin his steadוַיָּחֶלvay/YA/cheland he beganלְהָסִיתle/ha/SITto stir upאֶת־עַמּוֹet-am/MOhis peopleלִמְרֹדlim/RODto rebelבְּעַמִּיbe/am/MIagainst my peopleעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeהֵחֵלּוּhe/CHEL/luthey beganלְהִתְכּוֹנֵןle/hit/ko/NENto prepareלַמִּלְחָמָהlam/mil/cha/MAfor warוְלַעֲלוֹתve/la/a/LOTand to come upלְהִלָּחֵםle/hil/la/CHEMto battleבְּעַמִּי׃be/am/MIagainst my people

   And it came to pass that king Laman died, and his son began to reign in his stead. And he began to stir his people up in rebellion against my people; therefore they began to prepare for war, and to come up to battle against my people.

   וָאֶשְׁלַחva/esh/LACHand I sentאֶת־מְרַגְּלַיet-me/rag/ge/LAYmy spiesסָבִיבsa/VIVround aboutאֶרֶץE/retsthe landשֶׁמְלוֹןSHEM/lonof Shemlonלָדַעַתla/DA/atto discoverאֶת־הֲכָנוֹתֵיהֶםet-ha/kha/no/te/HEMtheir preparationsלְמַעַןle/MA/anso thatאֶשְׁמֹרesh/MORI might guardמִפְּנֵיהֶםmip/pe/ne/HEMagainst themלְבִלְתִּיle/vil/TIthat notיָבֹאוּya/VO/uthey should comeעַל־עַמִּיal-am/MIupon my peopleלְהַשְׁמִידָם׃le/hash/mi/DAMto destroy them

   But I had sent my spies out round about the land of Shemlon, that I might discover their preparations, that I might guard against them, that they might not come upon my people and destroy them.

   And it came to pass that they came up upon the north of the land of Shilom, with their numerous hosts, men armed with bows, and with arrows, and with swords, and with cimeters, and with stones, and with slings; and they had their heads shaved that they were naked; and they were girded with a leathern girdle about their loins.

   וָאַסְתִּירva/as/TIRand I hidאֶת־נְשֵׁיet-ne/SHEthe womenעַמִּיam/MIof my peopleוְטַפָּםve/tap/PAMand their childrenבַּמִּדְבָּרbam/mid/BARin the wildernessוָאֲצַוva/a/TSAVand I commandedגַּםgamalsoאֶת־כׇּל־זְקֵנַיet-kol-ze/ke/NAYall my old menהַיְּכוֹלִיםhay/ye/kho/LIMthat couldלָשֵׂאתla/SETbearנֶשֶׁקNE/shekweaponsוְגַםve/GAMand alsoאֶת־כׇּל־בַּחוּרַיet-kol-ba/chu/RAYall my young menהַיְּכוֹלִיםhay/ye/kho/LIMthat were ableלָשֵׂאתla/SETto bearנֶשֶׁקNE/shekweaponsלְהִקָּהֵלle/hik/ka/HELto gather themselvesלָצֵאתla/TSETto come forthלַמִּלְחָמָהlam/mil/cha/MAto battleבַּלָּמָנִיםbal/La/ma/NIMagainst the Lamanitesוָאַעֲמִידֵםva/a/a/mi/DEMand I placed themבְּמַעַרְכוֹתָםbe/ma/ar/kho/TAMin their ranksאִישׁishevery manלְפִיle/FIaccording toגִילוֹ׃gi/LOhis age

   And it came to pass that I caused that the women and children of my people should be hid in the wilderness; and I also caused that all my old men that could bear arms, and also all my young men that were able to bear arms, should gather themselves together to go to battle against the Lamanites; and I did place them in their ranks, every man according to his age.

    וַנַּעַלvan/NA/aland we went upלְהִלָּחֵםle/hil/la/CHEMto battleבַּלָּמָנִיםbal/La/ma/NIMagainst the Lamanitesוַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iגַם־אֲנִיgam-a/NIeven Iבְּזִקְנָתִיbe/zik/na/TIin my old ageעָלִיתִיa/LI/tiwent upלְהִלָּחֵםle/hil/la/CHEMto battleבַּלָּמָנִיםbal/La/ma/NIMagainst the Lamanitesוַנַּעַלvan/NA/aland we went upבְּכֹחַbe/KHO/achin the strengthיְהוָהAdonaiof Adonaiלַמִּלְחָמָה׃lam/mil/cha/MAto battle

    And it came to pass that we did go up to battle against the Lamanites; and I, even I, in my old age, did go up to battle against the Lamanites. And it came to pass that we did go up in the strength of the Lord to battle.

11. 11

    וְלֹאve/LOand notיָדְעוּya/de/Uknewהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesדָבָרda/VARanythingעַל־יְהוָהal-Adonaiconcerning Adonaiוְעַל־כֹּחוֹve/AL-ko/CHOand His strengthלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeבָּטְחוּba/te/CHUthey trustedבְּכֹחָםbe/kho/CHAMin their own strengthאַךְakhneverthelessהָיוּha/YUwereעַםama peopleחָזָקcha/ZAKstrongבְּכֹחַbe/KHO/achin the strengthאָדָם׃a/DAMof man

    Now, the Lamanites knew nothing concerning the Lord, nor the strength of the Lord, therefore they depended upon their own strength. Yet they were a strong people, as to the strength of men.

12. 12

    וַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUand they wereעַםama peopleפֶּרֶאPE/rewildוְאַכְזָרve/akh/ZARand ferociousוְצָמֵאve/tsa/MEand thirstyדָםdamfor bloodמַאֲמִינִיםma/a/mi/NIMbelievingבְּמָסֹרֶתbe/ma/SO/retin the traditionאֲבוֹתֵיהֶםa/vo/te/HEMof their fathersוְזֹאתve/ZOTand thisהִיאhiisמַאֲמִינִיםma/a/mi/NIMwhat they believeכִּיkithatגֹרְשׁוּgor/SHUthey were drivenמֵאֶרֶץme/E/retsout of the landיְרוּשָׁלַיִםYe/ru/sha/LA/yimof Jerusalemבַּעֲוֹןba/a/VONbecause of the iniquitiesאֲבוֹתֵיהֶםa/vo/te/HEMof their fathersוְכִיve/KHIand thatעֲשָׁקוּםa/sha/KUMwronged themאֲחֵיהֶםa/che/HEMtheir brethrenבַּמִּדְבָּרbam/mid/BARin the wildernessוְגַםve/GAMand alsoעֲשָׁקוּםa/sha/KUMwronged themבְּעׇבְרָםbe/ov/RAMwhile crossingאֶת־הַיָּם׃et-hay/YAMthe sea

    They were a wild, and ferocious, and a blood-thirsty people, believing in the tradition of their fathers, which is this—Believing that they were driven out of the land of Jerusalem because of the iniquities of their fathers, and that they were wronged in the wilderness by their brethren, and they were also wronged while crossing the sea;

    And again, that they were wronged while in the land of their first inheritance, after they had crossed the sea, and all this because that Nephi was more faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord—therefore he was favored of the Lord, for the Lord heard his prayers and answered them, and he took the lead of their journey in the wilderness.

    וַיִּקְצְפוּvay/yik/tse/FUand were wrothעָלָיוa/LAYVwith himאֶחָיוe/CHAYVhis brethrenכִּי־לֹאki-lobecause notהֵבִינוּhe/VI/nuthey understoodאֶת־דַּרְכֵיet-dar/KHEthe dealingsיְהוָהAdonaiof Adonaiוַיִּקְצְפוּvay/yik/tse/FUand they were wrothעָלָיוa/LAYVwith himגַּםgamalsoעַל־הַמַּיִםal-ham/MA/yimupon the watersכִּיkibecauseהִקְשׁוּhik/SHUthey hardenedאֶת־לִבָּםet-lib/BAMtheir heartsנֶגֶדNE/gedagainstיְהוָה׃AdonaiAdonai

    And his brethren were wroth with him because they understood not the dealings of the Lord; they were also wroth with him upon the waters because they hardened their hearts against the Lord.

15. 15

    וְעוֹדve/ODand againקָצְפוּka/tse/FUthey were wrothעָלָיוa/LAYVwith himבְּהַגִּיעָםbe/hag/gi/AMwhen they arrivedאֶל־אֶרֶץel-E/retsto the landהַנַּחֲלָהhan/na/cha/LAof promiseכִּיkibecauseאָמְרוּa/me/RUthey saidכִּיkithatלָקַחla/KACHhe tookאֶת־מֶמְשֶׁלֶתet-mem/SHE/letthe rule overהָעָםha/AMthe peopleמִיָּדָםmiy/ya/DAMout of their handsוַיְבַקְשׁוּvay/vak/SHUand they soughtלַהֲרֹגla/ha/ROGto slayאוֹתוֹ׃o/TOhim

    And again, they were wroth with him when they had arrived in the promised land, because they said that he had taken the ruling of the people out of their hands; and they sought to kill him.

    וְעוֹדve/ODand againקָצְפוּka/tse/FUthey were wrothעָלָיוa/LAYVwith himכִּיkibecauseהָלַךְha/LAKHhe wentהַמִּדְבָּרָהham/mid/BA/rainto the wildernessכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasצִוָּהtsiv/VAcommandedיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiוַיִּקַּחvay/yik/KACHand tookאֶת־הַסְּפָרִיםet-has/se/fa/RIMthe recordsהַחֲרוּתִיםha/cha/ru/TIMwhich were engravenעַל־לוּחוֹתal-lu/CHOTupon the platesהַנְּחֹשֶׁתhan/ne/CHO/shetof brassכִּיkiforאָמְרוּa/me/RUthey saidכִּיkithatגְּזָלָם׃ge/za/LAMhe robbed them

    And again, they were wroth with him because he departed into the wilderness as the Lord had commanded him, and took the records which were engraven on the plates of brass, for they said that he robbed them.

17. 17

    וְכֵןve/KHENand thusלִמְּדוּlim/me/DUthey taughtאֶת־בְּנֵיהֶםet-be/ne/HEMtheir childrenלִשְׂנֹאlis/NOthat they should hateאוֹתָםo/TAMthemוְלִרְצֹחַve/lir/TSO/achand that they should murderאוֹתָםo/TAMthemוְלִגְזֹלve/lig/ZOLand that they should robוְלִשְׁלֹלve/lish/LOLand plunderמֵהֶםme/HEMof themוְלַעֲשׂוֹתve/la/a/SOTand doכׇּל־אֲשֶׁרkol-a/SHERall whichיוּכְלוּyukh/LUthey couldלְהַשְׁמִידָםle/hash/mi/DAMto destroy themלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeיֶשׁ־לָהֶםyesh-la/HEMthey haveשִׂנְאַתsin/ATa hatredעוֹלָםo/LAMeternalלִבְנֵיliv/NEtoward the childrenנֶפִי׃NE/fiof Nephi

    And thus they have taught their children that they should hate them, and that they should murder them, and that they should rob and plunder them, and do all they could to destroy them; therefore they have an eternal hatred towards the children of Nephi.

    וּבַעֲבוּרu/va/a/VURand becauseזֹאתzotof thisרִמָּנִיrim/MA/nideceived meלָמָןLA/manLamanהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingבְּעׇרְמָתוֹbe/or/ma/TOby his cunningוּבְנִכְלֵיu/ve/nikh/LEand the craftinessכַּחֲשָׁיוka/cha/SHAYVof his liesוּבְהַבְטָחוֹתָיוu/ve/hav/ta/cho/TAYVand his promisesהַנְּעִימוֹתhan/ne/i/MOTfairכִּיkithatהֵבֵאתִיhe/VE/tiI broughtאֶת־עַמִּיet-am/MImy peopleאֶל־הָאָרֶץel-ha/A/retsinto the landהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisלְמַעַןle/MA/anso thatיַשְׁמִידוּםyash/mi/DUMthey might destroy themאַףafyeaסָבַלְנוּsa/val/NUwe sufferedשָׁנִיםsha/NIMyearsרַבּוֹתrab/BOTmanyבָּאָרֶץ׃ba/A/retsin the land

    For this very cause has king Laman, by his cunning, and lying craftiness, and his fair promises, deceived me, that I have brought this my people up into this land, that they may destroy them; yea, and we have suffered these many years in the land.

19. 19

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowאֲנִיa/NIIזֶנִיףZE/nifZeniffאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafter havingסַפְּרִיsap/pe/RItellingאֶת־כׇּל־הַדְּבָרִיםet-kol-had/de/va/RIMall the thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseלְעַמִּיle/am/MIto my peopleעַל־הַלָּמָנִיםal-Hal/la/ma/NIMconcerning the Lamanitesעוֹרַרְתִּיo/rar/TII stirred upאוֹתָםo/TAMthemלָצֵאתla/TSETto come forthלַמִּלְחָמָהlam/mil/cha/MAto battleבְּכׇל־כֹּחָםbe/KHOL-ko/CHAMwith all their mightבְּטֻחִיםbe/tu/CHIMtrustingבַּיהוָהba-Adonaiin Adonaiלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeנִלְחַמְנוּnil/cham/NUwe contendedבָּםbamwith themפָּנִיםpa/NIMfaceאֶל־פָּנִים׃el-pa/NIMto face

    And now I, Zeniff, after having told all these things unto my people concerning the Lamanites, I did stimulate them to go to battle with their might, putting their trust in the Lord; therefore, we did contend with them, face to face.

20. 20

    וַנְּגָרְשֵׁםvan/ne/ga/re/SHEMand we drove themשֵׁנִיתshe/NITagainמֵאַרְצֵנוּme/ar/TSE/nuout of our landוַנַּכֵּםvan/nak/KEMand we slew themמַכָּהmak/KAwith a slaughterגְדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreatעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERuntilלֹאlonotסָפַרְנוּם׃sa/far/NUMwe numbered them

    And it came to pass that we did drive them again out of our land; and we slew them with a great slaughter, even so many that we did not number them.

21. 21

    וַנָּשָׁבvan/NA/shavand we returnedאֶל־אַרְצֵנוּel-ar/TSE/nuto our own landוַיָּשׇׁבvay/YA/shovand returnedעַמִּיam/MImy peopleלִרְעוֹתlir/OTto tendאֶת־צֹאנָםet-tso/NAMtheir flocksוְלַעֲבֹדve/la/a/VODand to tillאֶת־אַדְמָתָם׃et-ad/ma/TAMtheir ground

    And it came to pass that we returned again to our own land, and my people again began to tend their flocks, and to till their ground.

22. 22

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowאֲנִיa/NIIזָקַנְתִּיza/KAN/tiam oldוָאֶתֵּןva/et/TENand I conferredאֶת־הַמַּמְלָכָהet-ham/mam/la/KHAthe kingdomלְאֶחָדle/e/CHADto oneמִבָּנַיmib/ba/NAYof my sonsלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeלֹאlonotאוֹסִיףo/SIFI shall addלְדַבֵּרle/dab/BERto speakוִיבָרֵךְvi/va/REKHand may blessיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֶת־עַמִּיet-am/MImy peopleאָמֵן׃a/MENAmen

    And now I, being old, did confer the kingdom upon one of my sons; therefore, I say no more. And may the Lord bless my people. Amen.
