   And now it came to pass that as Alma was journeying from the land of Gideon southward, away to the land of Manti, behold, to his astonishment, he met with the sons of Mosiah journeying towards the land of Zarahemla.

   Now these sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God.

   But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God.

   And they had been teaching the word of God for the space of fourteen years among the Lamanites, having had much success in bringing many to the knowledge of the truth; yea, by the power of their words many were brought before the altar of God, to call on his name and confess their sins before him.

   Now these are the circumstances which attended them in their journeyings, for they had many afflictions; they did suffer much, both in body and in mind, such as hunger, thirst and fatigue, and also much labor in the spirit.

   Now these were their journeyings: Having taken leave of their father, Mosiah, in the first year of the judges; having refused the kingdom which their father was desirous to confer upon them, and also this was the minds of the people;

   וַיֵּצְאוּvay/yets/Uand they departedמֵאֶרֶץme/E/retsout of the landזָרַהֶמְלָהZa/ra/HEM/laof Zarahemlaוַיִּקְחוּvay/yik/CHUand tookאֶת־חַרְבוֹתֵיהֶםet-char/vo/te/HEMtheir swordsוַחֲנִיתוֹתֵיהֶםva/cha/ni/to/te/HEMand their spearsוְקַשְׁתוֹתֵיהֶםve/kash/to/te/HEMand their bowsוְחִצֵּיהֶםve/chits/tse/HEMand their arrowsוְקַלְעֵיהֶםve/kal/e/HEMand their slingsוְזֹאתve/ZOTand thisעָשׂוּa/SUthey didלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיָכִינוּya/khi/NUthey might provideלָהֶםla/HEMunto themselvesאֹכֶלO/khelfoodבַּמִּדְבָּר׃bam/mid/BARin the wilderness

   Nevertheless they departed out of the land of Zarahemla, and took their swords, and their spears, and their bows, and their arrows, and their slings; and this they did that they might provide food for themselves while in the wilderness.

   וְכֵןve/KHENand thusיָצְאוּya/tse/Uthey departedאֶל־הַמִּדְבָּרel-ham/mid/BARinto the wildernessבְּמִסְפָּרָםbe/mis/pa/RAMwith their numbersאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhomבָּחָרוּba/CHA/ruthey selectedלַעֲלוֹתla/a/LOTto go upלְאֶרֶץle/E/retsto the landנֶפִיNE/fiof Nephiלִקְרֹאlik/ROto preachאֶת־דְּבַר־אֱלֹהִיםet-de/VAR-e/lo/HIMthe word of Godלַלָּמָנִים׃lal/La/ma/NIMunto the Lamanites

   And thus they departed into the wilderness with their numbers which they had selected, to go up to the land of Nephi, to preach the word of God unto the Lamanites.

   And it came to pass that they journeyed many days in the wilderness, and they fasted much and prayed much that the Lord would grant unto them a portion of his Spirit to go with them, and abide with them, that they might be an instrument in the hands of God to bring, if it were possible, their brethren, the Lamanites, to the knowledge of the truth, to the knowledge of the baseness of the traditions of their fathers, which were not correct.

    וַיִּפְקֹדvay/yif/KODand visitedיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאוֹתָםo/TAMthemבְּרוּחוֹbe/Ru/CHOwith His Spiritוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidלָהֶםla/HEMunto themהִנָּחֲמוּhin/na/cha/MUbe comfortedוַיִּנָּחֲמוּ׃vay/yin/na/cha/MUand they were comforted

    And it came to pass that the Lord did visit them with his Spirit, and said unto them: Be comforted. And they were comforted.

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiאֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMunto themגַּם־זֹאתgam-zotalsoלְכוּle/KHUgo forthבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesאֲחֵיכֶםa/che/KHEMyour brethrenוְהָקִימוּve/ha/KI/muand establishאֶת־דְּבָרִיet-de/va/RImy wordאַךְakhyetהֱיוּhe/YUbeאֲרִיכֵיa/ri/KHEpatientרוּחַRU/achof spiritוְסֹבְלִיםve/sov/LIMand long-sufferingבְּצָרוֹתbe/tsa/ROTin afflictionsלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatתַּרְאוּtar/Uyou may show forthלָהֶםla/HEMunto themמוֹפְתִיםmof/TIMexamplesטוֹבִיםto/VIMgoodבִּיbiin meוַאֲשִׂימְכֶםva/a/si/me/KHEMand I will make of youלִכְלִיlikh/LIan instrumentבְּיָדַיbe/ya/DAYin my handsלִישׁוּעַתli/shu/ATunto the salvationנְפָשׁוֹתne/fa/SHOTof soulsרַבּוֹת׃rab/BOTmany

    And the Lord said unto them also: Go forth among the Lamanites, thy brethren, and establish my word; yet ye shall be patient in long-suffering and afflictions, that ye may show forth good examples unto them in me, and I will make an instrument of thee in my hands unto the salvation of many souls.

    וַיִּתְחַזְּקוּvay/yit/chaz/ze/KUand took courageלִבּוֹתlib/BOTthe heartsבְּנֵיbe/NEof the sonsמוֹשִׁיָּהMo/SHIY/yaof Mosiahוְגַםve/GAMand alsoאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthoseאִתָּםit/TAMthat were with themלָלֶכֶתla/LE/khetto go forthאֶל־הַלָּמָנִיםel-Hal/la/ma/NIMunto the Lamanitesלְהַגִּידle/hag/GIDto declareלָהֶםla/HEMunto themאֶת־דְּבַר־אֱלֹהִים׃et-de/VAR-e/lo/HIMthe word of God

    And it came to pass that the hearts of the sons of Mosiah, and also those who were with them, took courage to go forth unto the Lamanites to declare unto them the word of God.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenבָּאוּBA/uthey arrivedאֶל־גְּבוּלוֹתel-ge/vu/LOTin the bordersאֶרֶץE/retsof the landהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesוַיִּפָּרְדוּvay/yip/pa/re/DUthat separated themselvesאִישׁishoneמֵעַלme/ALfromאָחִיוa/CHIVanotherוַיִּבְטְחוּvay/yiv/te/CHUtrustingבַּיהוָהba-Adonaiin Adonaiכִּיkithatעוֹדodagainיִפְגְּשׁוּyif/ge/SHUthey should meetלְקֵץle/KETSat the closeקְצִירָםke/tsi/RAMof their harvestכִּיkiforחָשְׁבוּcha/she/VUthey supposedגְּדוֹלָהge/do/LAgreat wasהַמְּלָאכָהham/me/la/KHAthe workאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUthey had undertakenעַל־נַפְשָׁם׃al-naf/SHAMupon themselves

    And it came to pass when they had arrived in the borders of the land of the Lamanites, that they separated themselves and departed one from another, trusting in the Lord that they should meet again at the close of their harvest; for they supposed that great was the work which they had undertaken.

    And assuredly it was great, for they had undertaken to preach the word of God to a wild and a hardened and a ferocious people; a people who delighted in murdering the Nephites, and robbing and plundering them; and their hearts were set upon riches, or upon gold and silver, and precious stones; yet they sought to obtain these things by murdering and plundering, that they might not labor for them with their own hands.

    וְכֵןve/KHENthusהָיוּha/YUthey wereעַםama peopleעָצֵלa/TSELindolentמְאֹדme/ODveryוְרַבִּיםve/rab/BIMand manyמֵהֶםme/HEMof themעָבְדוּa/ve/DUworshipedאֱלִילִיםe/li/LIMidolsוַתְּהִיvat/te/HIand wasעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMupon themקִלְלַתkil/LATthe curseאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godבַּעֲבוּרba/a/VURbecause ofמָסֹרוֹתma/so/ROTthe traditionsאֲבוֹתֵיהֶםa/vo/te/HEMof their fathersאַךְakhnotwithstandingהַבְטָחוֹתhav/ta/CHOTthe promisesיְהוָהAdonaiof Adonaiנִתְּנוּnit/te/NUwere extendedלָהֶםla/HEMunto themאִם־יָשׁוּבוּ׃im-ya/SHU/vuon conditions of repentance

    Thus they were a very indolent people, many of whom did worship idols, and the curse of God had fallen upon them because of the traditions of their fathers; notwithstanding the promises of the Lord were extended unto them on the conditions of repentance.

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeזֶהzethis wasהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARthe causeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERfor whichבַּעֲבוּרוֹba/a/vu/ROwhereofלָקְחוּla/ke/CHUhad undertakenבְּנֵיbe/NEthe sonsמוֹשִׁיָּהMo/SHIY/yaof Mosiahאֶת־הַמְּלָאכָהet-ham/me/la/KHAthe workאוּלַיu/LAYthat perhapsיְשִׁיבוּםye/shi/VUMthey might turn themאוּלַיu/LAYthat perhapsיְבִיאוּםye/vi/UMthey might bring themלָדַעַתla/DA/atto knowאֶת־עֲצַתet-a/TSATof the planהַגְּאֻלָּה׃hag/ge/ul/LAof redemption

    Therefore, this was the cause for which the sons of Mosiah had undertaken the work, that perhaps they might bring them unto repentance; that perhaps they might bring them to know of the plan of redemption.

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeנִפְרְדוּnif/re/DUseparated themselvesאִישׁishoneמֵאָחִיוme/a/CHIVfrom anotherוַיֵּצְאוּvay/yets/Uand went forthבְּתוֹכָםbe/to/KHAMamong themכׇּל־אִישׁkol-ishevery manלְבַדּוֹle/vad/DOaloneכְּפִיke/FIaccording toדְּבַרde/VARthe wordוְכֹחַve/KHO/achand powerאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichנִתַּןnit/TANwas givenלוֹ׃lohim

    Therefore they separated themselves one from another, and went forth among them, every man alone, according to the word and power of God which was given unto him.

    Now Ammon being the chief among them, or rather he did administer unto them, and he departed from them, after having blessed them according to their several stations, having imparted the word of God unto them, or administered unto them before his departure; and thus they took their several journeys throughout the land.

    And Ammon went to the land of Ishmael, the land being called after the sons of Ishmael, who also became Lamanites.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכְּבוֹאke/VOas enteredעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonלְאֶרֶץle/E/retsinto the landיִשְׁמָעֵאלYish/ma/ELof Ishmaelוַיִּתְפְּשׂוּהוּvay/yit/pe/su/HUthat took himהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesוַיַּאַסְרוּהוּvay/ya/as/RU/huand bound himכְּמִשְׁפָּטָםke/mish/pa/TAMas was their customלֶאֱסֹרle/e/SORto bindאֶת־כׇּל־הַנֶּפִיִּיםet-Kol-han/ne/fiy/YIMall the Nephitesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoנָפְלוּna/fe/LUfellבְּיָדָםbe/ya/DAMinto their handsוַיְבִיאוּםvay/vi/UMand carried themלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingוְכֵןve/KHENand thusנִתַּןnit/TANit was leftלִרְצוֹןlir/TSONto the pleasureהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingלַהֲרֹגla/ha/ROGto slayאוֹתָםo/TAMthemאוֹoorלְהַחֲזִיקָםle/ha/cha/zi/KAMto retain themבַּשֶּׁבִיbash/SHE/viin captivityאוֹoorלְהַשְׁלִיכָםle/hash/li/KHAMto cast themלְבֵיתle/VETintoהַכֶּלֶאhak/KE/leprisonאוֹoorלְגָרְשָׁםle/ga/re/SHAMto cast themמֵאַרְצוֹme/ar/TSOout of his landכִּרְצוֹנוֹkir/tso/NOaccording to his willוְחֶפְצוֹ׃ve/chef/TSOand pleasure

    And as Ammon entered the land of Ishmael, the Lamanites took him and bound him, as was their custom to bind all the Nephites who fell into their hands, and carry them before the king; and thus it was left to the pleasure of the king to slay them, or to retain them in captivity, or to cast them into prison, or to cast them out of his land, according to his will and pleasure.

    וַיּוּבָאvay/yu/VAand was broughtעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwho wasעַל־אֶרֶץal-E/retsover the landיִשְׁמָעֵאלYish/ma/ELof Ishmaelוּשְׁמוֹu/she/MOand his name wasלָמוֹנִיLa/MO/niLamoniוְהוּאve/HUand he wasמִצֶּאֱצָאֵיmits/tse/e/tsa/Ea descendantיִשְׁמָעֵאל׃Yish/ma/ELof Ishmael

    And thus Ammon was carried before the king who was over the land of Ishmael; and his name was Lamoni; and he was a descendant of Ishmael.

22. 22

    וַיִּשְׁאַלvay/yish/ALand inquiredהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingאֶת־עַמּוֹןet-Am/MONof Ammonאִםimifחֶפְצוֹchef/TSOit were his desireלָשֶׁבֶתla/SHE/vetto dwellבָּאָרֶץba/A/retsin the landבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMthe Lamanitesאוֹoorבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongעַמּוֹ׃am/MOhis people

    And the king inquired of Ammon if it were his desire to dwell in the land among the Lamanites, or among his people.

23. 23

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVunto himעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonכֵּןkenyeaחָפֵץcha/FETSdesireאֲנִיa/NIIלָשֶׁבֶתla/SHE/vetto dwellבְּקֶרֶבbe/KE/revamongהָעָם־הַזֶּהha/AM-haz/ZEthis peopleלְעֵתle/ETfor a timeהֵןhenyeaוְאוּלַיve/u/LAYand perhapsעַד־יוֹםad-yomuntil the dayמוֹתִי׃mo/TII die

    And Ammon said unto him: Yea, I desire to dwell among this people for a time; yea, and perhaps until the day I die.

24. 24

    וַיִּשְׂמַחvay/yis/MACHand was pleasedהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingלָמוֹנִיLa/MO/niLamoniמְאֹדme/ODmuchבְּעַמּוֹןbe/Am/MONwith Ammonוַיְצַוvay/TSAVand causedלְהַתִּירle/hat/TIRthat should be loosedאֶת־כְּבָלָיוet-ke/va/LAYVhis bandsוַיַּחְפֹּץvay/yach/POTSand he wouldכִּיkithatיִקַּחyik/KACHshould takeעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonאַחַתa/CHAToneמִבְּנוֹתָיוmib/be/no/TAYVof his daughtersלְאִשָּׁה׃le/ish/SHAto wife

    And it came to pass that king Lamoni was much pleased with Ammon, and caused that his bands should be loosed; and he would that Ammon should take one of his daughters to wife.

25. 25

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merbut saidעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonאֵלָיוe/LAYVunto himלֹאlonayכִּי־אִםki-imbutעֶבֶדE/veda servantאֲנִיa/NIIלְךָle/KHAunto youלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeהָיָהha/YAbecameעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonלְעֶבֶדle/E/veda servantלַמֶּלֶךְlam/ME/lekhto the kingלָמוֹנִיLa/MO/niLamoniוַיּוּשַׂםvay/yu/SAMthat he was setבֵּיןbenamongהָעֲבָדִיםha/a/va/DIMthe servantsהָאֲחֵרִיםha/a/che/RIMthe otherלִשְׁמֹרlish/MORto watchאֶת־עֶדְרֵיet-ed/REthe flocksלָמוֹנִיla/MO/niof Lamoniכְּמִשְׁפַּטke/mish/PATaccording to the customהַלָּמָנִים׃hal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanites

    But Ammon said unto him: Nay, but I will be thy servant. Therefore Ammon became a servant to king Lamoni. And it came to pass that he was set among other servants to watch the flocks of Lamoni, according to the custom of the Lamanites.

26. 26

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterהֱיוֹתוֹhe/yo/TOhe had beenבַּעֲבוֹדַתba/a/vo/DATin the serviceהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingשְׁלֹשָׁהshe/lo/SHAthreeיָמִיםya/MIMdaysבִּהְיוֹתוֹbih/yo/TOas he wasעִם־עַבְדֵיim-av/DEwith the servantsהַלָּמָנִיםhal/La/ma/NIMof the Lamanitesהֹלְכִיםhol/KHIMgoing forthעִם־עֶדְרֵיהֶםim-ed/re/HEMwith their flocksאֶל־מְקוֹםel-me/KOMto the placeהַמַּיִםham/MA/yimof waterאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich wasנִקְרָאnik/RAcalledמֵיmethe waterסֶבוּסSE/vusof Sebusוְכׇל־הַלָּמָנִיםve/KHOL-hal/la/ma/NIMand all the Lamanitesנוֹהֲגִיםno/ha/GIMdriveאֶת־עֶדְרֵיהֶםet-ed/re/HEMtheir flocksהֵנָּהHEN/nahitherלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיִהְיוּyih/YUthere might beלָהֶםla/HEMunto themמַיִם׃MA/yimwater

    And after he had been in the service of the king three days, as he was with the Lamanitish servants going forth with their flocks to the place of water, which was called the water of Sebus, and all the Lamanites drive their flocks hither, that they may have water—

27. 27

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeבִּנְהֹגbin/HOGas droveעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonוְעַבְדֵיve/av/DEand the servantsהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingאֶת־עֶדְרֵיהֶםet-ed/re/HEMtheir flocksאֶל־מְקוֹםel-me/KOMto the placeהַמַּיִםham/MA/yimof the waterהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisוְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEbeholdמִסְפַּרmis/PARa certain numberלָמָנִיםla/Ma/NIMof Lamanitesאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoהָיוּha/YUhad beenעִם־עֶדְרֵיהֶםim-ed/re/HEMwith their flocksלַמַּיִםlam/MA/yimto waterעָמְדוּa/me/DUstoodוַיָּפִיצוּvay/ya/fi/TSUand scatteredאֶת־עֶדְרֵיet-ed/REthe flocksעַמּוֹןAm/MONof Ammonוְעַבְדֵיve/av/DEand the servantsהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingוַיְפִיצוּםvay/fi/TSUMand scattered themעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatנָסוּNA/suthey fledלִדְרָכִיםlid/ra/KHIMwaysרַבּוֹת׃rab/BOTmany

    Therefore, as Ammon and the servants of the king were driving forth their flocks to this place of water, behold, a certain number of the Lamanites, who had been with their flocks to water, stood and scattered the flocks of Ammon and the servants of the king, and they scattered them insomuch that they fled many ways.

28. 28

    וַיִּלֹּנוּvay/yil/LO/nuand murmuredעַבְדֵיav/DEthe servantsהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingעַתָּהat/TAnowיַהֲרֹגya/ha/ROGwill slayאוֹתָנוּo/TA/nuusהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhthe kingכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasהָרַגha/RAGhe slewאֶת־אַחֵינוּet-a/CHE/nuour brethrenכִּיkibecauseנָפֹצוּna/FO/tsuwere scatteredעֶדְרֵיהֶםed/re/HEMtheir flocksבְּרִשְׁעַתbe/rish/ATby the wickednessהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMof the menהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseוַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luand they beganלִבְכּוֹתliv/KOTto weepמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdנָפֹצוּna/FO/tsuare scatteredעֶדְרֵינוּed/re/NUour flocksכְּבָר׃ke/VARalready

    Now the servants of the king began to murmur, saying: Now the king will slay us, as he has our brethren because their flocks were scattered by the wickedness of these men. And they began to weep exceedingly, saying: Behold, our flocks are scattered already.

29. 29

    וַיִּבְכּוּvay/yiv/KUand they weptמִיִּרְאַתmiy/yir/ATbecause of the fearהַמָּוֶתham/MA/vetof deathוַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכִּרְאוֹתkir/OTwhen sawעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonזֹאתzotthisוַיִּרְחַבvay/yir/CHAVthat swelledלִבּוֹlib/BOhis heartבְּקִרְבּוֹbe/kir/BOwithin himמִשִּׂמְחָהmis/sim/CHAwith joyכִּיkiforאָמַרa/MARhe saidאַרְאֶהar/EI will show forthאֶת־כֹּחִיet-ko/CHImy powerלְעַבְדֵיle/av/DEunto the servantsחֲבֵרַיcha/ve/RAYmy fellowsאֵלֶּהEL/letheseאוֹoorאֶת־הַכֹּחַet-hak/KO/achthe powerאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich isבִּיbiin meבְּהָשִׁיבbe/ha/SHIVin restoringאֶת־הָעֲדָרִיםet-ha/a/da/RIMthe flocksהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseלַמֶּלֶךְlam/ME/lekhto the kingלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatאֶקְנֶהek/NEI may winאֶת־לְבַבet-le/VAVthe heartsעַבְדֵיav/DEof the servantsחֲבֵרַיcha/ve/RAYmy fellowsאֵלֶּהEL/letheseלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatאוֹבִילֵםo/vi/LEMI may lead themלְהַאֲמִיןle/ha/a/MINto believeבִּדְבָרָי׃bid/va/RAYin my words

    Now they wept because of the fear of being slain. Now when Ammon saw this his heart was swollen within him with joy; for, said he, I will show forth my power unto these my fellow-servants, or the power which is in me, in restoring these flocks unto the king, that I may win the hearts of these my fellow-servants, that I may lead them to believe in my words.

30. 30

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAnowאֵלֶּהEL/letheseהָיוּha/YUwereמַחְשְׁבוֹתmach/she/VOTthe thoughtsעַמּוֹןAm/MONof Ammonבִּרְאוֹתוֹbir/o/TOwhen he sawאֶת־צָרוֹתet-tsa/ROTthe afflictionsאֵלֶּהEL/leof thoseאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhomחָשַׁבcha/SHAVhe termedלְאֶחָיו׃le/e/CHAYVhis brethren

    And now, these were the thoughts of Ammon, when he saw the afflictions of those whom he termed to be his brethren.

31. 31

    וַיְדַבֵּרvay/dab/BERand he spokeעַל־לִבָּםal-lib/BAMto their heartלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאַחַיa/CHAYmy brethrenהִתְחַזְּקוּhit/chaz/ze/KUbe of good cheerוְנֵלְכָהve/nel/KHAand let us goלְחַפֵּשׂle/chap/PESin searchאֶת־הָעֲדָרִיםet-ha/a/da/RIMof the flocksוּנְקַבְּצֵםu/ne/kab/be/TSEMand gather themוּנְשִׁיבֵםu/ne/shi/VEMand bring them backאֶל־מְקוֹםel-me/KOMunto the placeהַמָּיִםham/MA/yimof waterוְכֵןve/KHENand thusנִשְׁמֹרnish/MORwe will preserveאֶת־הָעֲדָרִיםet-ha/a/da/RIMthe flocksלַמֶּלֶךְlam/ME/lekhunto the kingוְלֹאve/LOand notיְמִיתֵנוּ׃ye/mi/te/NUhe will slay us

    And it came to pass that he flattered them by his words, saying: My brethren, be of good cheer and let us go in search of the flocks, and we will gather them together and bring them back unto the place of water; and thus we will preserve the flocks unto the king and he will not slay us.

32. 32

    וַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUand they wentלְחַפֵּשׂle/chap/PESin searchאֶת־הָעֲדָרִיםet-ha/a/da/RIMof the flocksוַיֵּלְכוּvay/yel/KHUand they wentאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonוַיָּרוּצוּvay/ya/RU/tsuand they rushed forthבִּמְהֵרָהbim/he/RAwith swiftnessרַבָּהrab/BAmuchוַיַּשִּׂיגוּvay/yas/SI/guand overtookאֶת־עֶדְרֵיet-ed/REthe flocksהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingוַיְקַבְּצוּםvay/kab/be/TSUMand gathered them togetherשֵׁנִיתshe/NITagainאֶל־מְקוֹםel-me/KOMto the placeהַמָּיִם׃ham/MA/yimof water

    And it came to pass that they went in search of the flocks, and they did follow Ammon, and they rushed forth with much swiftness and did head the flocks of the king, and did gather them together again to the place of water.

33. 33

    וַיָּקוּמוּvay/ya/KU/muand stoodהָאֲנָשִׁיםha/a/na/SHIMthe menהָהֵםha/HEMthoseשֵׁנִיתshe/NITagainלְהָפִיץle/ha/FITSto scatterאֶת־עֶדְרֵיהֶםet-ed/re/HEMtheir flocksוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonאֶל־אֶחָיוel-e/CHAYVunto his brethrenסֹבּוּSOB/buencircleאֶת־הָעֲדָרִיםet-ha/a/da/RIMthe flocksסָבִיבsa/VIVround aboutלְבִלְתִּיle/vil/TIthat notיָנוּסוּya/NU/suthey fleeוַאֲנִיva/a/NIand Iאֵלֵךְe/LEKHwill goוְאֶלָּחֵםve/el/la/CHEMand contendבָּאֲנָשִׁיםba/a/na/SHIMwith the menהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseהַמְּפִיצִיםham/me/fi/TSIMwho scatterאֶת־עֲדָרֵינוּ׃et-a/da/re/NUour flocks

    And those men again stood to scatter their flocks; but Ammon said unto his brethren: Encircle the flocks round about that they flee not; and I go and contend with these men who do scatter our flocks.

34. 34

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeעָשׂוּa/SUthey didכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERasצִוָּהtsiv/VAcommandedעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonוַיֵּצֵאvay/ye/TSEand he went forthוַיַּעֲמֹדvay/ya/a/MODand stoodלְהִלָּחֵםle/hil/la/CHEMto contendבָּאֲנָשִׁיםba/a/na/SHIMwith thoseהָעוֹמְדִיםha/om/DIMwho stoodעַל־מֵיal-meby the watersסֶבוּסSE/vusof Sebusוּמִסְפָּרָםu/mis/pa/RAMand they were in numberלֹאlonotמְעָט׃me/ATa few

    Therefore, they did as Ammon commanded them, and he went forth and stood to contend with those who stood by the waters of Sebus; and they were in number not a few.

35. 35

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeלֹאlonotיָרְאוּya/re/Uthey fearedאֶת־עַמּוֹןet-Am/MONAmmonכִּיkiforחָשְׁבוּcha/she/VUthey supposedכִּיkithatיוּכַלyu/KHALcouldאִישׁisha manאֶחָדe/CHADoneמֵאַנְשֵׁיהֶםme/an/she/HEMof their menלַהֲרֹגla/ha/ROGslayאוֹתוֹo/TOhimכִּרְצוֹנָםkir/tso/NAMaccording to their pleasureכִּי־לֹאki-lofor notיָדְעוּya/de/Uthey knewכִּיkithatהִבְטִיחַhiv/TI/achhad promisedיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiלְמוֹשִׁיָּהLe/mo/SHIY/yaMosiahלְהַצִּילle/hats/TSILthat he would deliverאֶת־בָּנָיוet-ba/NAYVhis sonsמִיָּדָםmiy/ya/DAMout of their handsוְגַםve/GAMand alsoלֹא־יָדְעוּlo-ya/de/Uthey did not knowדָּבָרda/VARany thingעַל־יְהוָהal-Adonaiconcerning Adonaiלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeשָׂמְחוּsa/me/CHUthey delightedבְּאׇבְדַןbe/ov/DANin the destructionאֲחֵיהֶםa/che/HEMof their brethrenוּבַעֲבוּרu/va/a/VURand forזֹאתzotthisעָמְדוּa/me/DUthey stoodלְהָפִיץle/ha/FITSto scatterאֶת־עֶדְרֵיet-ed/REthe flocksהַמֶּלֶךְ׃ham/ME/lekhof the king

    Therefore they did not fear Ammon, for they supposed that one of their men could slay him according to their pleasure, for they knew not that the Lord had promised Mosiah that he would deliver his sons out of their hands; neither did they know anything concerning the Lord; therefore they delighted in the destruction of their brethren; and for this cause they stood to scatter the flocks of the king.

36. 36

    וַיַּעֲמֹדvay/ya/a/MODbut stood forthעַמּוֹןAm/MONAmmonוַיָּחֶלvay/YA/cheland beganלְהַשְׁלִיךְle/hash/LIKHto castאֲבָנִיםa/va/NIMstonesבְּקַלְעוֹbe/kal/Owith his slingאַףafyeaבְּכֹחַbe/KHO/achwith powerרַבravmightyקָלַעka/LAdid he slingאֲבָנִיםa/va/NIMstonesבָּםbamat themוַיַּךְvay/YAKHand he slewמִסְפָּרmis/PARa certain numberמֵהֶםme/HEMof themעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatהֵחֵלּוּhe/CHEL/luthey beganלְהִשְׁתּוֹמֵםle/hish/to/MEMto be astonishedעַל־כֹּחוֹal-ko/CHOat his powerאַךְakhyetכָּעֲסוּka/a/SUthey were angryעַל־מוֹתal-motfor the deathאֲחֵיהֶםa/che/HEMof their brethrenוְנֶחְרְצוּve/nech/re/TSUand they were determinedכִּיkithatיִפֹּלyip/POLhe should fallוּבִרְאוֹתָםu/vir/o/TAMand seeingכִּי־לֹאki-lothat notיָכְלוּya/khe/LUthey couldלְהַכּוֹתוֹle/hak/ko/TOhit himבְּאַבְנֵיהֶםbe/av/ne/HEMwith their stonesוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uthey came forthבַּמַּקְלוֹתbam/mak/LOTwith clubsלַהֲרֹגla/ha/ROGto slayאוֹתוֹ׃o/TOhim

    But Ammon stood forth and began to cast stones at them with his sling; yea, with mighty power he did sling stones amongst them; and thus he slew a certain number of them insomuch that they began to be astonished at his power; nevertheless they were angry because of the slain of their brethren, and they were determined that he should fall; therefore, seeing that they could not hit him with their stones, they came forth with clubs to slay him.

37. 37

    וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEbut beholdכׇּל־אִישׁkol-ishevery manאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatהֵרִיםhe/RIMlifted upאֶת־מַקְלוֹet-mak/LOhis clubלְהַכּוֹתle/hak/KOTto smiteאֶת־עַמּוֹןet-Am/MONAmmonוַיְקַצֵּץvay/kats/TSETShe smote offאֶת־זְרוֹעוֹתֵיהֶםet-ze/ro/o/te/HEMtheir armsבְּחַרְבּוֹbe/char/BOwith his swordכִּיkiforעָמַדa/MADhe stoodבִּפְנֵיbif/NEagainstמַכּוֹתֵיהֶםmak/ko/te/HEMtheir blowsבְּהַכּוֹתוֹbe/hak/ko/TOby smitingאֶת־זְרוֹעֹתֵיהֶםet-ze/ro/o/te/HEMtheir armsבְּפִיbe/FIwith the edgeחַרְבּוֹchar/BOof his swordעַד־כִּיad-kiinsomuch thatהֵחֵלּוּhe/CHEL/luthey beganלְהִשְׁתּוֹמֵםle/hish/to/MEMto be astonishedוַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luand beganלָנוּסla/NUSto fleeמִפָּנָיוmip/pa/NAYVbefore himהֵןhenyeaוּמִסְפָּרָםu/mis/pa/RAMand their numberלֹאlonotמְעָטme/ATa fewוַיַּבְרִיחֵםvay/yav/ri/CHEMand he made them fleeבְּכֹחַbe/KHO/achby the strengthזְרוֹעוֹ׃ze/ro/Oof his arm

    But behold, every man that lifted his club to smite Ammon, he smote off their arms with his sword; for he did withstand their blows by smiting their arms with the edge of his sword, insomuch that they began to be astonished, and began to flee before him; yea, and they were not few in number; and he caused them to flee by the strength of his arm.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAnowשִׁשָּׁהshish/SHAsixמֵהֶםme/HEMof themנָפְלוּna/fe/LUfellבַּקֶּלַעbak/KE/laby the slingאַךְakhbutלֹאlonotהֵמִיתhe/MIThe slewאִישׁishanyזוּלַתzu/LATsave it wereנְגִידָםne/gi/DAMtheir leaderבְּחַרְבּוֹbe/char/BOwith his swordוַיְקַצֵּץvay/kats/TSETSand he smote offאֶת־כׇּל־הַזְּרוֹעוֹתet-kol-haz/ze/ro/OTas many armsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERasהוּרְמוּhur/MUwere liftedנֶגְדּוֹneg/DOagainst himוְלֹאve/LOand notמְעַטּוֹתme/at/TOTa fewהָיוּ׃ha/YUthey were

    Now six of them had fallen by the sling, but he slew none save it were their leader with his sword; and he smote off as many of their arms as were lifted against him, and they were not a few.

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכַּאֲשֶׁרka/a/SHERwhenהִבְרִיחָםhiv/ri/CHAMhe drove themהַרְחֵקhar/CHEKafar offוַיָּשׇׁבvay/YA/shovthat he returnedוַיַּשְׁקוּvay/yash/KUand they wateredאֶת־עֶדְרֵיהֶםet-ed/re/HEMtheir flocksוַיְשִׁיבוּםvay/shi/VUMand returned themאֶל־מִרְעֵהel-mir/Eto the pastureהַמֶּלֶךְham/ME/lekhof the kingוַיָּבֹאוּvay/ya/VO/uand went inאֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְel-ham/ME/lekhunto the kingנֹשְׂאִיםnos/IMbearingאֶת־הַזְּרוֹעוֹתet-haz/ze/ro/OTthe armsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichקֻצְּצוּkuts/tse/TSUhad been smitten offבְּחֶרֶבbe/CHE/revby the swordעַמּוֹןAm/MONof Ammonמֵאֵלֶּהme/EL/leof thoseאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhoבִּקְשׁוּbik/SHUsoughtלַהֲרֹגla/ha/ROGto slayאוֹתוֹo/TOhimוַיּוּבְאוּvay/yuv/Uand they were carriedאֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְel-ham/ME/lekhin unto the kingלְעֵדוּתle/e/DUTfor a testimonyעַל־הַדְּבָרִיםal-had/de/va/RIMof the thingsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעָשׂוּ׃a/SUthey did

    And when he had driven them afar off, he returned and they watered their flocks and returned them to the pasture of the king, and then went in unto the king, bearing the arms which had been smitten off by the sword of Ammon, of those who sought to slay him; and they were carried in unto the king for a testimony of the things which they had done.
