   Now Alma, seeing that the words of Amulek had silenced Zeezrom, for he beheld that Amulek had caught him in his lying and deceiving to destroy him, and seeing that he began to tremble under a consciousness of his guilt, he opened his mouth and began to speak unto him, and to establish the words of Amulek, and to explain things beyond, or to unfold the scriptures beyond that which Amulek had done.

   Now the words that Alma spake unto Zeezrom were heard by the people round about; for the multitude was great, and he spake on this wise:

   וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowזִיזְרוֹםZi/ZE/romZeezromבִּרְאוֹתְךָbir/ot/KHAseeingכִּיkithatנִתְפַּשְׂתָּnit/pas/TAyou have been takenבְּכַחַשְׁךָbe/kha/chash/KHAin your lyingוּבְעׇרְמָתְךָu/ve/or/ma/te/KHAand in your craftinessכִּי־לֹאki-lofor notלִבְנֵי־אָדָםliv/NE-a/DAMunto menלְבַדָּםle/vad/DAMaloneשִׁקַּרְתָּshik/kar/TAhave you liedכִּי־אִםki-imbutלֵאלֹהִיםle/lo/HIMunto Godשִׁקַּרְתָּshik/kar/TAhave you liedכִּיkiforהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdהוּאhuHeיֹדֵעַyo/DE/aknowsאֶת־כׇּל־מַחְשְׁבוֹתֶיךָet-kol-mach/she/vo/te/KHAall your thoughtsוְהִנְּךָve/hin/ne/KHAand behold youרֹאֶהro/Eseeכִּיkithatמַחְשְׁבוֹתֶיךָmach/she/vo/te/KHAyour thoughtsנִגְלוּnig/LUare made knownלָנוּLA/nuunto usבְּרוּחוֹ׃be/Ru/CHOby His Spirit

   Now Zeezrom, seeing that thou hast been taken in thy lying and craftiness, for thou hast not lied unto men only but thou hast lied unto God; for behold, he knows all thy thoughts, and thou seest that thy thoughts are made known unto us by his Spirit;

   וְהִנְּךָve/hin/ne/KHAand behold youרֹאֶהro/Eseeכִּיkithatיָדַעְנוּya/DA/nuwe knowאֶת־מְזִמָּתְךָet-me/zim/ma/te/KHAyour planכִּי־הָיְתָהki-ha/ye/TAthat it wasמְזִמָּהme/zim/MAa planעֲרוּמָהa/ru/MAsubtleמְאֹדme/ODveryכְּעׇרְמַתke/or/MATas to the subtletyהַשָּׂטָןhas/sa/TANof the devilלְשַׁקֵּרle/shak/KERto lieוּלְרַמּוֹתu/le/ram/MOTand to deceiveאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatתְּשִׂימֵםte/si/MEMyou might set themעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuagainst usלְגַדֵּףle/gad/DEFto revileאֹתָנוּo/TA/nuusוּלְגָרְשֵׁנוּ׃u/le/ga/re/SHE/nuand to cast us out

   And thou seest that we know that thy plan was a very subtle plan, as to the subtlety of the devil, for to lie and to deceive this people that thou mightest set them against us, to revile us and to cast us out—

   וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowזֹאתzotthisהָיְתָהha/ye/TAwasמְזִמַּתme/zim/MATthe planצֹרֶרְךָtso/rer/KHAof your adversaryוַיַּעַשׂvay/YA/asand he exercisedאֶת־כֹּחוֹet-ko/CHOhis powerבְּךָbe/KHAin youוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowחָפַצְתִּיcha/FATS/tiI wouldכִּיkithatתִזְכְּרוּtiz/ke/RUyou should rememberכִּיkithatאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhatאֹמַרo/MARI sayלְךָle/KHAunto youאֹמַרo/MARI sayלַכֹּל׃lak/KOLunto all

   Now this was a plan of thine adversary, and he hath exercised his power in thee. Now I would that ye should remember that what I say unto thee I say unto all.

   וְהִנֵּהve/hin/NEand beholdאֹמֵרo/MERsayאֲנִיa/NIIלְכֻלְּכֶםle/khul/le/KHEMunto you allכִּי־זֶהki-zethat thisהָיָהha/YAwasפַחfacha snareהַצֹּרֵרhats/tso/RERof the adversaryאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichטָמַןta/MANhe laidלִלְכֹּדlil/KODto catchאֶת־הָעָםet-ha/AMthe peopleהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיְבִיאֲכֶםye/vi/a/KHEMhe might bring youתַּחַתTA/chatunderיָדוֹya/DOhis handלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיְסוֹבֵבye/so/VEVhe might encircleאֶתְכֶםet/KHEMyouבְּשַׁרְשְׁרוֹתָיוbe/shar/she/ro/TAYVwith his chainsלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיֶאֱסׇרְכֶםye/e/sor/KHEMhe might bind youלְשַׁחַתle/SHA/chatunto destructionעוֹלָםo/LAMeverlastingכְּכֹחַke/KHO/achaccording to the powerשִׁבְיוֹ׃shiv/YOof his captivity

   And behold I say unto you all that this was a snare of the adversary, which he has laid to catch this people, that he might bring you into subjection unto him, that he might encircle you about with his chains, that he might chain you down to everlasting destruction, according to the power of his captivity.

   וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכְּדַבֵּרke/dab/BERwhen spokeאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe wordsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseוַיֹּסֶףvay/YO/sefthat continuedזִיזְרוֹםZi/ZE/romZeezromלִרְעֹדlir/ODto trembleבְּיֶתֶרbe/YE/termoreשְׂאֵתse/ETexceedinglyכִּיkiforנוֹכַחno/KHACHhe was convincedיוֹתֵרyo/TERmoreוָיוֹתֵרva/yo/TERand moreבְּכֹחַbe/KHO/achof the powerאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godוְגַםve/GAMand alsoנוֹכַחno/KHACHhe was convincedכִּיkithatלְאַלְמָאLe/AL/maAlmaוְלַעֲמוּלֶקve/La/a/mu/LEKand AmulekדַּעַתDA/athad knowledgeאוֹתוֹo/TOof himכִּיkiforנוֹכַחno/KHACHhe was convincedכִּיkithatיָדְעוּya/de/Uthey knewמַחְשְׁבוֹתmach/she/VOTthe thoughtsלִבּוֹlib/BOof his heartוּמְזִמּוֹתָיוu/me/zim/mo/TAYVand his intentsכִּיkiforנִתַּןnit/TANwas givenלָהֶםla/HEMthemכֹּחַKO/achpowerלָדַעַתla/DA/atto knowאֶת־אֵלֶּהet-EL/leof these thingsכְּרוּחַke/RU/achby the spiritהַנְּבוּאָה׃han/ne/vu/Aof prophecy

   Now when Alma had spoken these words, Zeezrom began to tremble more exceedingly, for he was convinced more and more of the power of God; and he was also convinced that Alma and Amulek had a knowledge of him, for he was convinced that they knew the thoughts and intents of his heart; for power was given unto them that they might know of these things according to the spirit of prophecy.

   וַיָּחֶלvay/YA/cheland beganזִיזְרוֹםZi/ZE/romZeezromלִדְרֹשׁlid/ROSHto inquireמֵאִתָּםme/it/TAMof themהֵיטֵבhe/TEVdiligentlyלְמַעַןle/MA/anthatיֵדַעye/DAhe might knowעוֹדodmoreעַל־מַלְכוּתal-mal/KHUTconcerning the kingdomהָאֱלֹהִיםha/e/lo/HIMof Godוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֶל־אַלְמָאel-AL/maunto Almaמַה־זֹּאתma-zotwhat is thisאֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּרa/SHER-dib/BERwhich spokeעֲמוּלֶקA/mu/lekAmulekעַל־תְּחִיַּתal-te/chiy/YATconcerning the resurrectionהַמֵּתִיםham/me/TIMof the deadכִּיkithatכֻלָּםkhul/LAMthey allיָקוּמוּya/KU/mushall riseמִן־הַמֵּתִיםmin-ham/me/TIMfrom the deadגַּם־צַדִּיקgam-tsad/DIKboth the justגַּם־רָשָׁעgam-ra/SHAand the unjustוְיוּבְאוּve/yuv/Uand shall be broughtלַעֲמֹדla/a/MODto standלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodלְהִשָּׁפֵטle/hish/sha/FETto be judgedכְּמַעֲשֵׂיהֶם׃ke/ma/a/se/HEMaccording to their works

   And Zeezrom began to inquire of them diligently, that he might know more concerning the kingdom of God. And he said unto Alma: What does this mean which Amulek hath spoken concerning the resurrection of the dead, that all shall rise from the dead, both the just and the unjust, and are brought to stand before God to be judged according to their works?

   וַיָּחֶלvay/YA/cheland beganאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaלְבָאֵרle/va/ERto expoundלוֹlounto himאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingנִתַּןnit/TANit is givenלְרַבִּיםle/rab/BIMunto manyלָדַעַתla/DA/atto knowאֶת־סוֹדוֹתet-so/DOTthe mysteriesאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof GodאַךְakhneverthelessהֵםhemtheyתַּחַתTA/chatare underמִצְוָהmits/VAa commandmentחֲזָקָהcha/za/KAstrictאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatלֹאlonotיִתְּנוּyit/te/NUthey shall impartרַקraksaveכְּחֵלֶקke/CHE/lekaccording to the portionדְּבָרוֹde/va/ROof his wordאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichיִתֵּןyit/TENhe grantsלִבְנֵי־הָאָדָםliv/NE-ha/a/DAMunto the children of menכַּקֶּשֶׁבkak/KE/shevaccording to the heedוְהַחֲרִיצוּתve/ha/cha/ri/TSUTand diligenceאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichיִתְּנוּyit/te/NUthey giveלוֹ׃lohim

   And now Alma began to expound these things unto him, saying: It is given unto many to know the mysteries of God; nevertheless they are laid under a strict command that they shall not impart only according to the portion of his word which he doth grant unto the children of men, according to the heed and diligence which they give unto him.

10. 10

    וְלָכֵןve/la/KHENand thereforeהַמַּקְשֶׁהham/mak/SHEhe that hardensאֶת־לְבָבוֹet-le/va/VOhis heartיְקַבֵּלye/kab/BELhe shall receiveאֶת־חֵלֶקet-CHE/lekthe portionהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARof the wordהַקָּטָןhak/ka/TANthe lesserוַאֲשֶׁרva/a/SHERand he thatלֹאlonotיַקְשֶׁהyak/SHEwill hardenאֶת־לְבָבוֹet-le/va/VOhis heartלוֹlounto himיִנָּתֵןyin/na/TENshall be givenחֵלֶקCHE/lekthe portionהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARof the wordהַגָּדוֹלhag/ga/DOLthe greaterעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERuntilיִנָּתֵןyin/na/TENit is givenלוֹlohimלָדַעַתla/DA/atto knowאֶת־סוֹדוֹתet-so/DOTthe mysteriesאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godעַדaduntilיֵדָעֵםye/da/EMhe knows themבִּמְלוֹאָם׃bim/lo/AMin full

    And therefore, he that will harden his heart, the same receiveth the lesser portion of the word; and he that will not harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word, until it is given unto him to know the mysteries of God until he know them in full.

    וַאֲשֶׁרva/a/SHERand they thatיַקְשׁוּyak/SHUwill hardenאֶת־לְבָבָםet-le/va/VAMtheir heartsלָהֶםla/HEMunto themיִנָּתֵןyin/na/TENshall be givenחֵלֶקCHE/lekthe portionהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARof the wordהַקָּטָןhak/ka/TANthe lesserעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERuntilלֹא־יֵדְעוּlo-yed/Uthey knowמְאוּמָהme/U/manothingמִסּוֹדוֹתָיוmis/so/do/TAYVconcerning his mysteriesוְאָזve/AZand thenיִשָּׁבוּyish/sha/VUthey are taken captiveבְּיַדbe/YADbyהַשָּׂטָןhas/sa/TANthe devilוְיוּבְלוּve/yuv/LUand ledכִּרְצוֹנוֹkir/tso/NOby his willלַשַּׁחַתlash/SHA/chatdown to destructionוְזֶהve/ZEand this isפֵּרוּשׁpe/RUSHthe meaningכַּבְלֵיkav/LEof the chainsשְׁאוֹל׃she/OLof hell

    And they that will harden their hearts, to them is given the lesser portion of the word until they know nothing concerning his mysteries; and then they are taken captive by the devil, and led by his will down to destruction. Now this is what is meant by the chains of hell.

12. 12

    וַעֲמוּלֶקva/A/mu/lekand Amulekדִּבֶּרdib/BERspokeבְּגָלוּיbe/ga/LUYplainlyעַל־הַמָּוֶתal-ham/MA/vetconcerning deathוְעַל־הַתְּקוּמָהve/AL-hat/te/ku/MAand concerning the risingמִן־הַבָּשָׂרmin-hab/ba/SARfrom the mortalityהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisלְאֵין־מָוֶתle/EN-MA/vetunto immortalityוְעַל־בּוֹאֵנוּve/AL-bo/e/NUand concerning the bringingלִפְנֵיlif/NEbeforeכִּסֵּאkis/SEthe barאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godלְהִשָּׁפֵטle/hish/sha/FETto be judgedכְּמַעֲשֵׂינוּ׃ke/ma/a/SE/nuaccording to our works

    And Amulek hath spoken plainly concerning death, and being raised from this mortality to a state of immortality, and being brought before the bar of God, to be judged according to our works.

13. 13

    וְאָזve/AZand thenאִם־הִקְשִׁינוּim-hik/shi/NUif we hardenedאֶת־לְבָבֵנוּet-le/va/VE/nuour heartsאַףafyeaאִם־הִקְשִׁינוּim-hik/shi/NUif we hardenedאֶת־לְבָבֵנוּet-le/va/VE/nuour heartsנֶגֶדNE/gedagainstהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARthe wordעַד־אֲשֶׁרad-a/SHERuntilלֹא־נִמְצָאlo-nim/TSAit is not foundבָנוּVA/nuin usאָזazthenיִהְיֶהyih/YEshall it beלָנוּLA/nuunto usרַעraevilמְאֹדme/ODexceedinglyכִּיkiforאָזazthenנֻרְשַׁע׃nur/SHAwe shall be condemned

    Then if our hearts have been hardened, yea, if we have hardened our hearts against the word, insomuch that it has not been found in us, then will our state be awful, for then we shall be condemned.

14. 14

    כִּיkiforדְבָרֵינוּde/va/re/NUour wordsיַרְשִׁיעוּנוּyar/shi/u/NUwill condemn usאַףafyeaכׇּל־מַעֲשֵׂינוּkol-ma/a/SE/nuall our worksיַרְשִׁיעוּנוּyar/shi/u/NUwill condemn usוְלֹאve/LOand notנִמָּצֵאnim/ma/TSEwe shall be foundתְמִימִיםte/mi/MIMspotlessוְגַםve/GAMand alsoמַחְשְׁבוֹתֵינוּmach/she/vo/TE/nuour thoughtsיַרְשִׁיעוּנוּyar/shi/u/NUwill condemn usוּבָרָעָהu/va/ra/Aand in the awful stateהַזֹּאתhaz/ZOTthisלֹאlonotנָעֵזna/EZshall we dareלְהַבִּיטle/hab/BITto look upאֶל־אֱלֹהֵינוּel-e/lo/HE/nuunto our Godוְנִשְׂמַחve/nis/MACHand we would be gladלוּluifנוּכַלnu/KHALwe couldלְצַוּוֹתle/tsav/VOTcommandאֶת־הַצֻּרִיםet-hats/tsu/RIMthe rocksוְהֶהָרִיםve/he/ha/RIMand the mountainsלִנְפֹּלlin/POLto fallעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuupon usלְהַסְתִּירֵנוּle/has/ti/re/NUto hide usמִפָּנָיו׃mip/pa/NAYVfrom his presence

    For our words will condemn us, yea, all our works will condemn us; we shall not be found spotless; and our thoughts will also condemn us; and in this awful state we shall not dare to look up to our God; and we would fain be glad if we could command the rocks and the mountains to fall upon us to hide us from his presence.

15. 15

    אַךְakhbutזֹאתzotthisלֹא־תִהְיֶהlo-tih/YEshall not beעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuwe mustלָצֵאתla/TSETcome forthוְלַעֲמֹדve/la/a/MODand standלְפָנָיוle/fa/NAYVbefore Himבִּכְבוֹדוֹbikh/vo/DOin His gloryוּבְכֹחוֹu/ve/kho/CHOand in His powerוּבִגְבוּרָתוֹu/vig/vu/ra/TOand in His mightבְּהוֹדוֹbe/ho/DOin His majestyוּבְמֶמְשַׁלְתּוֹu/ve/mem/shal/TOand in His dominionוּלְהוֹדוֹתu/le/ho/DOTand to acknowledgeלְבׇשְׁתֵּנוּle/vosh/te/NUto our shameעַד־עוֹלָםad-o/LAMeverlastingכִּיkithatכׇל־מִשְׁפָּטָיוkhol-mish/pa/TAYVall His judgmentsצֶדֶקTSE/dekare justכִּיkithatצַדִּיקtsad/DIKjustהוּאhuis Heבְּכׇל־מַעֲשָׂיוbe/KHOL-ma/a/SAYVin all His worksוְכִיve/KHIand thatחַסְדּוֹchas/DOHis mercy isעַל־בְּנֵיal-be/NEupon the childrenהָאָדָםha/a/DAMof menוְכִיve/KHIand thatיֶשׁ־לוֹyesh-loHe hasכׇּל־הַכֹּחַkol-hak/KO/achall powerלְהוֹשִׁיעַle/ho/SHI/ato saveכׇּל־אִישׁkol-ishevery manהַמַּאֲמִיןham/ma/a/MINthat believesבִּשְׁמוֹbish/MOon His nameוּמֵבִיאu/me/VIand brings forthפְּרִיpe/RIfruitרָאוּיra/UYmeetלַתְּשׁוּבָה׃lat/te/shu/VAfor repentance

    But this cannot be; we must come forth and stand before him in his glory, and in his power, and in his might, majesty, and dominion, and acknowledge to our everlasting shame that all his judgments are just; that he is just in all his works, and that he is merciful unto the children of men, and that he has all power to save every man that believeth on his name and bringeth forth fruit meet for repentance.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאֹמֵרo/MERsayאֲנִיa/NIIלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youאָזazthenיָבוֹאya/VOshall comeמָוֶתMA/veta deathאַףafevenמָוֶתMA/veta deathשֵׁנִיshe/NIsecondאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהוּאhuisמוֹתmotthe deathהָרוּחַha/RU/achof the spiritאָזazthenהָעֵתha/ETthe timeאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhenכׇּל־הַמֵּתkol-ham/METwhosoever diesבַּחֲטָאָיוba/cha/ta/AYVin his sinsכְּמוֹתke/MOTas to the deathהַבָּשָׂרhab/ba/SARof the fleshיָמוּתya/MUTshall dieגַּם־מוֹתgam-motalso a deathהָרוּחַha/RU/achof the spiritאַףafyeaיָמוּתya/MUTshall he dieלַדְּבָרִיםlad/de/va/RIMas to the thingsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich pertainלַצְּדָקָה׃lats/tse/da/KAunto righteousness

    And now behold, I say unto you then cometh a death, even a second death, which is a spiritual death; then is a time that whosoever dieth in his sins, as to a temporal death, shall also die a spiritual death; yea, he shall die as to things pertaining unto righteousness.

    Then is the time when their torments shall be as a lake of fire and brimstone, whose flame ascendeth up forever and ever; and then is the time that they shall be chained down to an everlasting destruction, according to the power and captivity of Satan, he having subjected them according to his will.

    אָזazthenאֹמֵרo/MERsayאֲנִיa/NIIלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youיִהְיוּyih/YUthey shall beכְּלֹא־נֶעֶשְׂתָהke/LO-ne/es/TAas if none were madeגְאֻלָּהge/ul/LAredemptionכִּי־לֹאki-lofor notיוּכְלוּyukh/LUcan theyלְהִגָּאֵלle/hig/ga/ELbe redeemedכְּצֶדֶקke/TSE/dekaccording to the justiceאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godוְלֹאve/LOand notיוּכְלוּyukh/LUcan theyלָמוּתla/MUTdieכִּיkiforאֵיןenthere is noעוֹדodmoreשָׁחַת׃SHA/chatcorruption

    Then, I say unto you, they shall be as though there had been no redemption made; for they cannot be redeemed according to God’s justice; and they cannot die, seeing there is no more corruption.

19. 19

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedכְּכַלּוֹתke/khal/LOTwhen made an endאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaלְדַבֵּרle/dab/BERof speakingאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe wordsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseוַיֹּסֶףvay/YO/sefthat continuedהָעָםha/AMthe peopleלְהִשְׁתּוֹמֵם׃le/hish/to/MEMto be astonished

    Now it came to pass that when Alma had made an end of speaking these words, the people began to be more astonished;

20. 20

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedאַנְטְיוֹנָהAn/te/YO/nathat Antionahאֶחָדe/CHADoneמִשָּׂרֵיmis/sa/REof the chief rulersהָעָםha/AMof the peopleוַיָּבֹאvay/ya/VOcame forthוַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאֵלָיוe/LAYVunto himמַה־זֹּאתma-zotwhat is thisאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatאָמַרְתָּa/MAR/tayou saidכִּיkithatיָקוּםya/KUMshall riseהָאָדָםha/a/DAMmanמִן־הַמֵּתִיםmin-ham/me/TIMfrom the deadוְיִשְׁתַּנֶּהve/yish/tan/NEand be changedמִן־הַבָּשָׂרmin-hab/ba/SARfrom the mortalהַזֶּהhaz/ZEthisלְאֵין־מָוֶתle/EN-MA/vetto an immortal stateוְכִיve/KHIand thatהַנֶּפֶשׁhan/NE/feshthe soulלֹאlonotתָמוּתta/MUTshall dieלְעוֹלָם׃le/o/LAMforever

    But there was one Antionah, who was a chief ruler among them, came forth and said unto him: What is this that thou hast said, that man should rise from the dead and be changed from this mortal to an immortal state, that the soul can never die?

21. 21

    מַה־הוּאma-huwhat isדְּבַרde/VARthe wordהַכָּתוּבhak/ka/TUVof the scriptureאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichאָמַרa/MARsaithכִּיkithatשָׂםsamplacedאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodאֶת־הַכְּרֻבִיםet-hak/ke/ru/VIMcherubimוְאֶת־לַהַטve/ET-LA/hatand a flamingהַחֶרֶבha/CHE/revswordהַמִּתְהַפֶּכֶתham/mit/hap/PE/khetwhich turns every wayמִקֶּדֶםmik/KE/demon the eastלְגַן־עֵדֶןle/GAN-E/denof the garden of Edenפֶּן־יִגְּשׁוּpen-yig/ge/SHUlest should come nearאָבִינוּa/VI/nuour fatherוְאִמֵּנוּve/im/me/NUand our motherהָרִאשׁוֹנִיםha/ri/sho/NIMthe firstוְאָכְלוּve/a/khe/LUand partakeמִפְּרִיmip/pe/RIof the fruitעֵץetsof the treeהַחַיִּיםha/chay/YIMof lifeוְחָיוּve/cha/YUand liveלְעוֹלָםle/o/LAMforeverוּבָזֹאתu/va/ZOTand thusנִרְאֶהnir/Ewe seeכִּיkithatלֹא־הָיָהlo-ha/YAthere was noלָהֶםla/HEMunto themתִּקְוָהtik/VAhopeלִחְיוֹתlich/YOTthat they should liveלְעוֹלָם׃le/o/LAMforever

    What does the scripture mean, which saith that God placed cherubim and a flaming sword on the east of the garden of Eden, lest our first parents should enter and partake of the fruit of the tree of life, and live forever? And thus we see that there was no possible chance that they should live forever.

22. 22

    וַיֹּאמֶרvay/YO/merand saidאַלְמָאAL/maAlmaאֵלָיוe/LAYVunto himזֶהzethis isהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARthe thingאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichעָמַדְתִּיa/MAD/tiI was aboutלְבָאֵרle/va/ERto explainוְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowרֹאִיםro/IMseeאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweכִּי־נָפַלki-na/FALthat fellאָדָםA/DAMAdamבְּאׇכְלוֹbe/okh/LOby his partakingמִן־הַפְּרִיmin-hap/pe/RIof the fruitהָאָסוּרha/a/SURforbiddenכִּדְבַרkid/VARaccording to the wordאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godוּבָזֹאתu/va/ZOTand thusרֹאִיםro/IMseeאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweכִּיkithatבְּנׇפְלוֹbe/nof/LOby his fallהָיוּha/YUwereכׇל־בְּנֵיkhol-be/NEall the childrenהָאָדָםha/a/DAMof menלְעַםle/AMa peopleאֹבֵדo/VEDlostוְנוֹפֵל׃ve/no/FELand fallen

    Now Alma said unto him: This is the thing which I was about to explain. Now we see that Adam did fall by the partaking of the forbidden fruit, according to the word of God; and thus we see, that by his fall, all mankind became a lost and fallen people.

23. 23

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאֹמֵרo/MERsayאֲנִיa/NIIלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youכִּיkithatאִלּוּil/LUifיָכֹלya/KHOLhad been possibleאָדָםA/DAMfor Adamלֶאֱכֹלle/e/KHOLto partakeמִפְּרִיmip/pe/RIof the fruitעֵץetsof the treeהַחַיִּיםha/chay/YIMof lifeבָּעֵתba/ETat the timeהַהִיאha/HIthatלֹא־הָיָהlo-ha/YAthere would have been noמָוֶתMA/vetdeathוְהָיָהve/ha/YAand would have beenהַדָּבָרhad/da/VARthe wordלְתֹהוּle/TO/huvoidוְעָשָׂהve/a/SAmakingאֶת־אֱלֹהִיםet-e/lo/HIMGodלִמְכַזֵּבlim/khaz/ZEVa liarכִּיkiforאָמַרa/MARhe saidאִם־תֹּאכַלim-to/KHALif you eatמוֹתmotsurelyתָּמוּת׃ta/MUTyou shall die

    And now behold, I say unto you that if it had been possible for Adam to have partaken of the fruit of the tree of life at that time, there would have been no death, and the word would have been void, making God a liar, for he said: If thou eat thou shalt surely die.

24. 24

    וְרֹאִיםve/ro/IMand seeאֲנַחְנוּa/NACH/nuweכִּי־בָאki-vathat cameהַמָּוֶתham/MA/vetdeathעַל־בְּנֵיal-be/NEupon the childrenהָאָדָםha/a/DAMof menאַףafyeaהַמָּוֶתham/MA/vetthe deathאֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּרa/SHER-dib/BERwhich spokeעָלָיוa/LAYVofעֲמוּלֶקA/mu/lekAmulekאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהוּאhuisמוֹתmotthe deathהַבָּשָׂרhab/ba/SARof the fleshאַךְakhneverthelessנִתַּןnit/TANwas grantedלָאָדָםla/a/DAMunto manמוֹעֵדmo/EDa timeלָשׁוּבla/SHUVthat he should repentוַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUand becameהַחַיִּיםha/chay/YIMthe lifeהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseלְעֵתle/ETa timeנִסָּיוֹןnis/sa/YONof probationעֵתeta timeלְהִכּוֹןle/hik/KONto prepareלִקְרַאתlik/RATto meetאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodעֵתeta timeלְהִכּוֹןle/hik/KONto prepareלַיָּמִיםlay/ya/MIMfor the daysהָאֵין־קֵץha/EN-ketsendlessאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichדִּבַּרְנוּdib/BAR/nuwe spokeעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMofאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהֵםhemareאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterתְּחִיַּתte/chiy/YATthe resurrectionהַמֵּתִים׃ham/me/TIMof the dead

    And we see that death comes upon mankind, yea, the death which has been spoken of by Amulek, which is the temporal death; nevertheless there was a space granted unto man in which he might repent; therefore this life became a probationary state; a time to prepare to meet God; a time to prepare for that endless state which has been spoken of by us, which is after the resurrection of the dead.

25. 25

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowלוּלֵאlu/LEwere it not forעֲצַתa/TSATthe planהַגְּאֻלָּהhag/ge/ul/LAof redemptionאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהוּכְנָהhukh/NAwas laidמִמּוֹסְדוֹתmim/mos/DOTfrom the foundationהָעוֹלָםha/o/LAMof the worldלֹא־יָכְלָהlo-ya/khe/LAthere could notלִהְיוֹתlih/YOThave beenתְּחִיַּתte/chiy/YATthe resurrectionהַמֵּתִיםham/me/TIMof the deadאַךְakhbutהוּכְנָהhukh/NAwas laidעֲצַתa/TSATa planגְּאֻלָּהge/ul/LAof redemptionאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichתָּבִיאta/VIshall bring to passלִתְחִיַּתlit/chiy/YATthe resurrectionהַמֵּתִיםham/me/TIMof the deadאֲשֶׁרa/SHERof whichדֻּבַּרdub/BARhas been spokenעָלֶיהָ׃a/LE/hathereof

    Now, if it had not been for the plan of redemption, which was laid from the foundation of the world, there could have been no resurrection of the dead; but there was a plan of redemption laid, which shall bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, of which has been spoken.

26. 26

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאִם־יָכְלוּim-ya/khe/LUif could haveאָבִינוּa/VI/nuour fatherוְאִמֵּנוּve/im/me/NUand our motherהָרִאשׁוֹנִיםha/ri/sho/NIMthe firstלָגֶשֶׁתla/GE/shetgone forthוְלֶאֱכֹלve/le/e/KHOLand partakenמֵעֵץme/ETSof the treeהַחַיִּיםha/chay/YIMof lifeהָיוּha/YUthey would have beenאֻמְלָלִיםum/la/LIMmiserableלְעוֹלָםle/o/LAMforeverבְּאֵיןbe/ENhaving noעֵתettimeהֲכָנָהha/kha/NAof preparationוּבָזֹאתu/va/ZOTand thusהָיְתָהha/ye/TAwould have beenעֲצַתa/TSATthe planהַגְּאֻלָּהhag/ge/ul/LAof redemptionמוּפָרָהmu/fa/RAfrustratedוּדְבַרu/de/VARand the wordאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godהָיָהha/YAwould have beenלְתֹהוּle/TO/huvoidוְאֵיןve/ENand would notלוֹlounto itתֹּקֶף׃TO/kefhave effect

    And now behold, if it were possible that our first parents could have gone forth and partaken of the tree of life they would have been forever miserable, having no preparatory state; and thus the plan of redemption would have been frustrated, and the word of God would have been void, taking none effect.

27. 27

    אַךְakhbutהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdלֹא־הָיָהlo-ha/YAit was notכֵןkhensoכִּיkibutנִגְזַרnig/ZARit was appointedעַל־בְּנֵיal-be/NEunto the childrenהָאָדָםha/a/DAMof menלָמוּתla/MUTthat they must dieוְאַחֲרֵיve/a/cha/REand afterהַמָּוֶתham/MA/vetdeathעֲלֵיהֶםa/le/HEMthey mustלָבוֹאla/VOcomeלַמִּשְׁפָּטlam/mish/PATto judgmentהוּאhuthat sameהַמִּשְׁפָּטham/mish/PATjudgmentאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichדִּבַּרְנוּdib/BAR/nuwe spokeעָלָיוa/LAYVofאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהוּאhuisהַקֵּץ׃hak/KETSthe end

    But behold, it was not so; but it was appointed unto men that they must die; and after death, they must come to judgment, even that same judgment of which we have spoken, which is the end.

28. 28

    וַיְהִיvay/HIand it happenedאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatגָּזַרga/ZARappointedאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodכִּי־יָבֹאוּki-ya/VO/uthat should comeהַדְּבָרִיםhad/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseעַל־הָאָדָםal-ha/a/DAMupon manהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdרָאָהra/Ahe sawכִּי־טוֹבki-tovthat it was expedientלָאָדָםla/a/DAMthat manלָדַעַתla/DA/atshould knowעַל־הַדְּבָרִיםal-had/de/va/RIMconcerning the thingsאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhereofגָּזַרga/ZARhe appointedעֲלֵיהֶם׃a/le/HEMunto them

    And after God had appointed that these things should come unto man, behold, then he saw that it was expedient that man should know concerning the things whereof he had appointed unto them;

29. 29

    וַיִּשְׁלַחvay/yish/LACHand he sentמַלְאָכִיםmal/a/KHIMangelsלְדַבֵּרle/dab/BERto converseעִמָּםim/MAMwith themוַיַּרְאוּvay/yar/Uand they caused to beholdלִבְנֵי־הָאָדָםliv/NE-ha/a/DAMthe children of menאֶת־כְּבוֹדוֹ׃et-ke/vo/DOHis glory

    Therefore he sent angels to converse with them, who caused men to behold of his glory.

30. 30

    וַיָּחֵלּוּvay/ya/CHEL/luand they beganמֵאָזme/AZfrom that time forthלִקְרֹאlik/ROto callבִשְׁמוֹvish/MOon His nameלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeדִּבֶּרdib/BERconversedאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodעִם־בְּנֵיim-be/NEwith the childrenהָאָדָםha/a/DAMof menוְהוֹדִיעָםve/ho/di/AMand made known unto themאֶת־עֲצַתet-a/TSATthe planהַגְּאֻלָּהhag/ge/ul/LAof redemptionאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהוּכְנָהhukh/NAhad been preparedמִמּוֹסְדוֹתmim/mos/DOTfrom the foundationהָעוֹלָםha/o/LAMof the worldוְזֹאתve/ZOTand thisהוֹדִיעָםho/di/AMhe made known unto themכֶּאֱמוּנָתָםke/e/mu/na/TAMaccording to their faithוּתְשׁוּבָתָםu/te/shu/va/TAMand repentanceוּמַעֲשֵׂיהֶםu/ma/a/se/HEMand their worksהַקְּדוֹשִׁים׃hak/ke/do/SHIMholy

    And they began from that time forth to call on his name; therefore God conversed with men, and made known unto them the plan of redemption, which had been prepared from the foundation of the world; and this he made known unto them according to their faith and repentance and their holy works.

31. 31

    לָכֵןla/KHENwhereforeנָתַןna/TANhe gaveמִצְוֹתmits/VOTcommandmentsלִבְנֵי־הָאָדָםliv/NE-ha/a/DAMunto the children of menאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterאֲשֶׁרa/SHERthatעָבְרוּa/ve/RUthey transgressedתְחִלָּהte/chil/LAfirstאֶת־הַמִּצְוֹתet-ham/mits/VOTthe commandmentsהָרִאשׁוֹנוֹתha/ri/sho/NOTthe firstבְּדִבְרֵיbe/div/REas to thingsהַבָּשָׂרhab/ba/SARwhich were temporalוַיִּהְיוּvay/yih/YUand becameכֵאלֹהִיםkhe/lo/HIMas godsיֹדְעֵיyod/Eknowingטוֹבtovgoodוָרָעva/RAand evilשָׂמִיםsa/MIMplacingנַפְשָׁםnaf/SHAMthemselvesלִפְעֹלlif/OLto actאוֹoorהוּשְׂמוּhus/MUbeing placedלִפְעֹלlif/OLto actכִּרְצוֹנָםkir/tso/NAMaccording to their willsוּכְחֶפְצָםu/khe/chef/TSAMand pleasuresאִם־לַעֲשׂוֹתim-la/a/SOTwhether to doרָעraevilוְאִם־לַעֲשׂוֹתve/IM-la/a/SOTor to doטוֹב׃tovgood

    Wherefore, he gave commandments unto men, they having first transgressed the first commandments as to things which were temporal, and becoming as gods, knowing good from evil, placing themselves in a state to act, or being placed in a state to act according to their wills and pleasures, whether to do evil or to do good—

32. 32

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeנָתַןna/TANgaveאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodלָהֶםla/HEMunto themמִצְוֹתmits/VOTcommandmentsאַחֲרֵיa/cha/REafterהוֹדִיעוֹho/di/Ohaving made knownלָהֶםla/HEMunto themאֶת־עֲצַתet-a/TSATthe planהַגְּאֻלָּהhag/ge/ul/LAof redemptionלְבִלְתִּיle/vil/TInot toעֲשׂוֹתa/SOTdoרָעraevilוְעֹנֶשׁve/O/neshand the penaltyהָרָעha/RAof evilהוּאhuisמָוֶתMA/veta deathשֵׁנִיshe/NIsecondאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhich isהוּאhuisמוֹתmota deathעוֹלָםo/LAMeverlastingבְּדִבְרֵיbe/div/REas to thingsהַצְּדָקָהhats/tse/da/KApertaining unto righteousnessכִּיkiforעַל־אֵלֶּהal-EL/leon suchלֹא־תוּכַלlo-tu/KHALcannotעֲצַתa/TSATthe planהַגְּאֻלָּהhag/ge/ul/LAof redemptionלִמְשֹׁלlim/SHOLhave powerכִּיkiforלֹא־יוּכְלוּlo-yukh/LUcannotמַעֲשֵׂיma/a/SEthe worksהַצֶּדֶקhats/TSE/dekof justiceלְהִשָּׁחֵתle/hish/sha/CHETbe destroyedכְּחֶסֶדke/CHE/sedaccording to the goodnessאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godהָעֶלְיוֹן׃ha/El/YONthe Most High

    Therefore God gave unto them commandments, after having made known unto them the plan of redemption, that they should not do evil, the penalty thereof being a second death, which was an everlasting death as to things pertaining unto righteousness; for on such the plan of redemption could have no power, for the works of justice could not be destroyed, according to the supreme goodness of God.

33. 33

    אַךְakhbutקָרָאka/RAcalledאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMGodלִבְנֵי־הָאָדָםliv/NE-ha/a/DAMunto the children of menבְּשֵׁםbe/SHEMin the nameבְּנוֹbe/NOof His Sonזֹאתzotthis isעֲצַתa/TSATthe planהַגְּאֻלָּהhag/ge/ul/LAof redemptionאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהוּכְנָהhukh/NAwas laidלֵאמֹרle/MORsayingאִם־תָּשׁוּבוּim-ta/SHU/vuif you will repentוְלֹאve/LOand notתַקְשׁוּtak/SHUhardenלְבַבְכֶםle/vav/KHEMyour heartsוְעָשִׂיתִיve/a/SI/tithen will I haveעִמָּכֶםim/ma/KHEMupon youחֶסֶדCHE/sedmercyבְּיַדbe/YADthroughבְּנִיbe/NImy Sonיְחִידִי׃ye/chi/DIonly begotten

    But God did call on men, in the name of his Son, (this being the plan of redemption which was laid) saying: If ye will repent, and harden not your hearts, then will I have mercy upon you, through mine Only Begotten Son;

34. 34

    לָכֵןla/KHENthereforeכׇּל־הַשָּׁבkol-hash/SHAVwhosoever repentsוְלֹאve/LOand notיַקְשֶׁהyak/SHEhardensאֶת־לְבָבוֹet-le/va/VOhis heartלוֹlounto himיִהְיֶהyih/YEshall beחֶסֶדCHE/sedmercyבְּיַדbe/YADthroughבְּנִיbe/NImy Sonיְחִידִיye/chi/DIonly begottenלִסְלִיחַתlis/li/CHATunto a remissionחֲטָאָיוcha/ta/AYVof his sinsוְאֵלֶּהve/EL/leand theseיָבֹאוּya/VO/ushall enterאֶל־מְנוּחָתִי׃el-me/nu/cha/TIinto my rest

    Therefore, whosoever repenteth, and hardeneth not his heart, he shall have claim on mercy through mine Only Begotten Son, unto a remission of his sins; and these shall enter into my rest.

35. 35

    וְכׇל־אֲשֶׁרve/KHOL-a/SHERand whosoeverיַקְשֶׁהyak/SHEwill hardenאֶת־לְבָבוֹet-le/va/VOhis heartוְיַעֲשֶׂהve/ya/a/SEand shall doעָוֶלA/veliniquityהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdנִשְׁבַּעְתִּיnish/BA/tiI swearבַחֲרוֹנִיva/cha/ro/NIin my wrathכִּי־לֹאki-lothat notיָבוֹאya/VOhe shall enterאֶל־מְנוּחָתִי׃el-me/nu/cha/TIinto my rest

    And whosoever will harden his heart and will do iniquity, behold, I swear in my wrath that he shall not enter into my rest.

36. 36

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowאַחַיa/CHAYmy brethrenהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdאֹמֵרo/MERsayאֲנִיa/NIIלָכֶםla/KHEMunto youאִם־תַּקְשׁוּim-tak/SHUif you will hardenלְבַבְכֶםle/vav/KHEMyour heartsלֹאlonotתָבֹאוּta/VO/uyou shall enterאֶל־מְנוּחַתel-me/nu/CHATinto the restיְהוָהAdonaiof Adonaiלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeעֲוֹנְכֶםa/von/KHEMyour iniquityיַכְעִיסֵהוּyakh/i/se/HUprovokes Himוְיוֹרִידve/yo/RIDthat he sends downחֲרוֹנוֹcha/ro/NOhis wrathעֲלֵיכֶםa/le/KHEMupon youכַּמְּרִיבָהkam/me/ri/VAas in the provocationהָרִאשׁוֹנָהha/ri/sho/NAfirstאַףafyeaכִּדְבָרוֹkid/va/ROaccording to his wordבַּמְּרִיבָהbam/me/ri/VAin the provocationהָאַחֲרוֹנָהha/a/cha/ro/NAlastכְּמוֹke/MOas well asבָרִאשׁוֹנָהva/ri/sho/NAthe firstלְשַׁחַתle/SHA/chatunto the destructionנַפְשׁוֹתֵיכֶםnaf/sho/te/KHEMof your soulsלְעוֹלָםle/o/LAMforeverלָכֵןla/KHENthereforeכִּדְבָרוֹkid/va/ROaccording to his wordלַמָּוֶתlam/MA/vetunto the deathהָאַחֲרוֹןha/a/cha/RONthe lastכְּמוֹke/MOas well asלָרִאשׁוֹן׃la/ri/SHONunto the first

    And now, my brethren, behold I say unto you, that if ye will harden your hearts ye shall not enter into the rest of the Lord; therefore your iniquity provoketh him that he sendeth down his wrath upon you as in the first provocation, yea, according to his word in the last provocation as well as the first, to the everlasting destruction of your souls; therefore, according to his word, unto the last death, as well as the first.

    וְעַתָּהve/at/TAand nowאַחַיa/CHAYmy brethrenבִּרְאוֹתֵנוּbir/o/te/NUseeingכִּיkithatיָדַעְנוּya/DA/nuwe knowאֶת־הַדְּבָרִיםet-had/de/va/RIMthe thingsהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseוְהֵםve/HEMand they areנֶאֱמָנִיםne/e/ma/NIMtrueנָשׁוּבָהna/shu/VAlet us repentוְאַל־נַקְשֶׁהve/AL-nak/SHEand not hardenאֶת־לְבָבֵנוּet-le/va/VE/nuour heartsפֶּן־נַכְעִיסpen-nakh/ISlest we provokeאֶת־יְהוָהet-AdonaiAdonaiאֱלֹהֵינוּe/lo/HE/nuour Godלְהוֹרִידle/ho/RIDto bring downחֲרוֹנוֹcha/ro/NOhis wrathעָלֵינוּa/LE/nuupon usבְּמִצְוֹתָיוbe/mits/vo/TAYVin his commandmentsהַשְּׁנִיּוֹתhash/she/niy/YOTthe secondהָאֵלֶּהha/EL/letheseאֲשֶׁר־נָתַןa/SHER-na/TANwhich he gaveלָנוּLA/nuusאַךְakhbutנָבוֹאָהna/VO/alet us enterאֶל־מְנוּחַתel-me/nu/CHATinto the restאֱלֹהִיםe/lo/HIMof Godאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהוּכְנָהhukh/NAis preparedכִּדְבָרוֹ׃kid/va/ROaccording to his word

    And now, my brethren, seeing we know these things, and they are true, let us repent, and harden not our hearts, that we provoke not the Lord our God to pull down his wrath upon us in these his second commandments which he has given unto us; but let us enter into the rest of God, which is prepared according to his word.
