   Yea, for thus saith the Lord: Have I put thee away, or have I cast thee off forever? For thus saith the Lord: Where is the bill of your mother’s divorcement? To whom have I put thee away, or to which of my creditors have I sold you? Yea, to whom have I sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.

   Wherefore, when I came, there was no man; when I called, yea, there was none to answer. O house of Israel, is my hand shortened at all that it cannot redeem, or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make their rivers a wilderness and their fish to stink because the waters are dried up, and they die because of thirst.

   I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.

   אֲדֹנָיA/do/NAYAdonaiיֱהֹוִהAdonaiGODנָתַןna/TANgaveלִיlimeלְשׁוֹןle/SHONthe tongueלִמּוּדִיםlim/mu/DIMof the learnedלָדַעַתla/DA/atthat I should knowלְדַבֵּרle/dab/BERto speakדָּבָרda/VARa wordבְּעִתּוֹbe/it/TOin seasonאֵלֶיךָe/LE/khato youבֵּית־יִשְׂרָאֵלbet-Yis/ra/ELO house of Israelבִּהְיוֹתְכֶםbih/yot/KHEMwhen you areיְגֵעִיםye/ge/IMwearyיָעִירya/IRhe wakesבַּבֹּקֶרbab/BO/kermorningבַּבֹּקֶרbab/BO/kerby morningיָעִירya/IRhe wakesלִיlito meאֹזֶןO/zenmy earלִשְׁמֹעַlish/MO/ato hearכַּלִּמּוּדִים׃kal/lim/mu/DIMas the learned

   The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season unto thee, O house of Israel. When ye are weary he waketh morning by morning. He waketh mine ear to hear as the learned.

   אֲדֹנָיA/do/NAYAdonaiיֱהֹוִהAdonaiGODפָּתַח־לִיpa/TACH-liopened myאֹזֶןO/zenearוְאָנֹכִיve/a/no/KHIand Iלֹאlonotמָרִיתִיma/RI/tiwas rebelliousאָחוֹרa/CHORnorלֹאlonotנְסוּגֹתִי׃ne/su/GO/tidid I turn away

   The Lord God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.

   גֵּוִיge/VImy backנָתַתִּיna/TAT/tiI gaveלְמַכִּיםle/mak/KIMto the smitersוּלְחָיַיu/le/cha/YAYand my cheeksלְמֹרְטִיםle/mor/TIMto them that plucked off the hairפָּנַיpa/NAYmy faceלֹאlonotהִסְתַּרְתִּיhis/TAR/tidid I hideמִכְּלִמּוֹתmik/ke/lim/MOTfrom shameוָרֹק׃va/ROKand spitting

   I gave my back to the smiter, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair. I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

   וַאדֹנָיva/Do/NAYfor AdonaiיֱהֹוִהAdonaiGODיַעֲזׇר־לִיya/a/ZOR-liwill help meעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeלֹאlonotנִכְלָמְתִּיnikh/LAM/tishall I be confoundedעַל־כֵּןal-kenthereforeשַׂמְתִּיSAM/tihave I setפָנַיfa/NAYmy faceכַּחַלָּמִישׁka/chal/la/MISHlike a flintוָאֵדַעva/e/DAand I knowכִּי־לֹאki-lothat notאֵבוֹשׁ׃e/VOSHI shall be ashamed

   For the Lord God will help me, therefore shall I not be confounded. Therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

8. 8

   וְקָרוֹבve/ka/ROVand nearיְהוָהAdonaiis Adonaiוְהוּאve/HUand heמַצְדִּיקִיmats/di/KIjustifies meמִי־יָרִיבmi-ya/RIVwho shall contendאִתִּיit/TIwith meנַעַמְדָהNA/am/dalet us standיָּחַדYA/chadtogetherמִי־בַעַלmi-VA/alwho isמִשְׁפָּטִיmish/pa/TImy adversaryיִגַּשׁyig/GASHlet him come nearאֵלַיe/LAYto meוְאַכֶּנּוּve/ak/KEN/nuand I will smite himבְּכֹחַbe/KHO/achby the strengthפִּי׃piof my mouth

   And the Lord is near, and he justifieth me. Who will contend with me? Let us stand together. Who is mine adversary? Let him come near me, and I will smite him with the strength of my mouth.

   כִּיkiforיַעֲזֹרya/a/ZORwill helpלִיlimeאֲדֹנָיA/do/NAYAdonaiיֱהֹוִהAdonaiGODוְכׇל־מַרְשִׁיעַיve/KHOL-mar/shi/AYand all they who shall condemn meהִנֵּהhin/NEbeholdכֻלָּםkhul/LAMall theyכַּבֶּגֶדkab/BE/gedas a garmentיִבְלוּyiv/LUshall wax oldעָשׁashthe mothיֹאכְלֵם׃yo/khe/LEMshall eat them

   For the Lord God will help me. And all they who shall condemn me, behold, all they shall wax old as a garment, and the moth shall eat them up.

    מִיmiwho isבָכֶםva/KHEMamong youיְרֵאye/REthat fearsיְהוָהAdonaiAdonaiשֹׁמֵעַsho/ME/athat obeysבְּקוֹלbe/KOLthe voiceעַבְדּוֹav/DOof his servantאֲשֶׁרa/SHERwhichהָלַךְha/LAKHwalksחֲשֵׁכִיםcha/she/KHIMin darknessוְאֵיןve/ENand there is noנֹגַהּNO/galightלוֹ׃loto him

    Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness and hath no light?

    הֵןhenbeholdכֻּלְּכֶםkul/le/KHEMall youקֹדְחֵיKOD/chethat kindleאֵשׁeshfireמְאַזְּרֵיme/az/ze/REwho compass yourselves withזִיקוֹתzi/KOTsparksלְכוּle/KHUwalk youבְּאוּרbe/URin the lightאֶשְׁכֶםesh/KHEMof your fireוּבְזִיקוֹתu/ve/zi/KOTand in the sparks thatבִּעַרְתֶּםbi/ar/TEMyou kindledמִיָּדִיmiy/ya/DIfrom my handהָיְתָה־זֹּאתha/ye/TA-zotthis shall beלָכֶםla/KHEMto youלְמַעֲצֵבָהle/ma/a/tse/VAin sorrowתִּשְׁכָּבוּן׃tish/ka/VUNshall you lie down

    Behold all ye that kindle fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks, walk in the light of your fire and in the sparks which ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand—ye shall lie down in sorrow.
