1. 1

   הוֹיwoהַחֹקְקִיםunto them that decreeחִקְקֵי־אָוֶןunrighteous decreesוּמְכַתְּבִיםand that writeעָמָלgrievousnessכִּתֵּבוּ׃which they have prescribed

   Wo unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed;

2. 2

   לְהַטּוֹתto turn awayמִדִּיןfrom judgmentדַּלִּיםthe needyוְלִגְזֹלand to take awayמִשְׁפַּטthe rightעֲנִיֵּיof the poor ofעַמִּיmy peopleלִהְיוֹתthat may beאַלְמָנוֹתwidowsשְׁלָלָםtheir preyוְאֶת־יְתוֹמִיםand the fatherlessיָבֹזּוּ׃they may rob

   To turn away the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!

   וּמַה־תַּעֲשׂוּand what will you doלְיוֹםin the day ofפְּקֻדָּהvisitationוּלְשׁוֹאָהand in the desolationמִמֶּרְחָקfrom farתָּבוֹאwhich shall comeעַל־מִיto whomתָּנוּסוּwill you fleeלְעֶזְרָהfor helpוְאָנָהand whereתַעַזְבוּwill you leaveכְּבוֹדְכֶם׃your glory

   And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?

   בִּלְתִּיexceptכָרַעto crouchתַּחַתamongאַסִּירthe prisonersוְתַחַתand amongהֲרוּגִיםthe slainיִפֹּלוּthey shall fallבְּכׇל־זֹאתin all thisלֹא־שָׁבis not turned awayאַפּוֹHis angerוְעוֹדand againיָדוֹHis handנְטוּיָה׃is stretched out still

   Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

   הוֹיOאַשּׁוּרAssyrianשֵׁבֶטthe rod ofאַפִּיmy angerוּמַטֶּה־הוּאand the staffבְיָדָםin their handזַעְמָם׃is their indignation

   O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is their indignation.

6. 6

   בְּגוֹיagainst a nationחָנֵףhypocriticalאֲשַׁלְּחֶנּוּI will send himוְעַל־עַםand against the people ofעֶבְרָתִיmy wrathאֲצַוֶּנּוּwill I give him a chargeלִשְׁלֹלto takeשָׁלָלthe spoilוְלָבֹזand to takeבַּזthe preyוּלְשׂוּמוֹ־מִרְמָסand to tread them downכְּחֹמֶרlike the mire ofחוּצוֹת׃the streets

   I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

7. 7

   וְהוּאhowbeit heלֹא־כֵןnot soיְדַמֶּהmeanethוּלְבָבוֹand his heartלֹא־כֵןnot soיַחְשֹׁבdoth thinkכִּיbutבִלְבָבוֹin his heartלְהַשְׁמִידto destroyוּלְהַכְרִיתand to cut offגּוֹיִםnationsלֹאnotמְעָט׃a few

   Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but in his heart it is to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

8. 8

   כִּיforיֹאמַרhe saithהֲלֹאare notשָׂרַיmy princesיַחְדָּוaltogetherמְלָכִים׃kings

   For he saith: Are not my princes altogether kings?

9. 9

   הֲלֹאis notכְּכַרְכְּמִישׁas CarchemishכַּלְנוֹCalnoאִם־לֹאis notכְאַרְפַּדas ArpadחֲמָתHamathאִם־לֹאis notכְדַמֶּשֶׂקas Damascusשֹׁמְרוֹן׃Samaria

   Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?

10. 10

    כַּאֲשֶׁרasיָסְדָהhath foundedיָדִיmy handלְמַמְלְכֹתthe kingdoms ofהָאֱלִילthe idolsוּפְסִילֵיהֶםand whose graven images did excelמִירוּשָׁלַיִםthem of Jerusalemוּמִשֹּׁמְרוֹן׃and of Samaria

    As my hand hath founded the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

11. 11

    הֲלֹאshall I notכַּאֲשֶׁרasעָשִׂיתִיI have doneלְשֹׁמְרוֹןunto Samariaוְלֶאֱלִילֶיהָand her idolsכֵּןsoאֶעֱשֶׂהdoלִירוּשָׁלַיִםto Jerusalemוְלַעֲצַבֶּיהָ׃and her idols

    Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and to her idols?

12. 12

    וְהָיָהwherefore it shall come to passכִּי־יְבַצַּעthat when hath performedאֲדֹנָיthe Lordאֶת־כׇּל־מַעֲשֵׂהוּhis whole workבְּהַרupon mountצִיּוֹןZionוּבִירוּשָׁלָיִםand upon JerusalemאֶפְקֹדI will punishעַל־פְּרִי־גֹדֶלthe fruit of the stoutלְבַבheart ofמֶלֶךְ־אַשּׁוּרthe king of Assyriaוְעַל־תִּפְאֶרֶתand the glory ofרוּםhighעֵינָיו׃his looks

    Wherefore it shall come to pass that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon Mount Zion and upon Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.

13. 13

    כִּיforאָמַרhe saithבְּכֹחַby the strength ofיָדִיmy handעָשִׂיתִיI have doneאֶת־אֵלֶּהthese thingsוּבְחׇכְמָתִיand by my wisdomכִּיforנְבֻנוֹתִיI am prudentוְאָסִירand I have movedגְּבוּלֹתthe borders ofעַמִּיםthe peopleוַעֲתוּדֹתֵיהֶםand their treasuresשׁוֹשֵׂתִיI have robbedוְאוֹרִידand I have put downכַּאבִּירas a valiant manיוֹשְׁבִים׃the inhabitants

    For he saith: By the strength of my hand and by my wisdom I have done these things; for I am prudent; and I have moved the borders of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man;

14. 14

    וַתִּמְצָאand hath foundכַקֵּןas a nestיָדִיmy handלְחֵילthe riches ofהָעַמִּיםthe peoplesוְכֶאֱסֹףand as one gatherethבֵּיצִיםeggsעֲזֻבוֹתthat are leftכׇּל־הָאָרֶץall the earthאֲנִיIאָסָפְתִּיhave gatheredוְלֹא־הָיָהand there was none thatנֹדֵדmovedכָּנָףthe wingוּפֹצֶהor openedפֶהthe mouthוּמְצַפְצֵף׃or peeped

    And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people; and as one gathereth eggs that are left have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

15. 15

    הֲיִתְפָּאֵרshall boast itselfהַגַּרְזֶןthe axעַלagainstהַחֹצֵבhim that hewethבּוֹtherewithאִם־יִתְגַּדֵּלshall magnify itselfהַמַּשּׂוֹרthe sawעַל־מְנִיפוֹagainst him that shaketh itכְּהָנִיףas if should shakeשֵׁבֶטthe rodוְאֶת־מְרִימָיוthem that lift it upכְּהָרִיםas if should lift upמַטֶּהthe staffלֹא־עֵץ׃as if it were no wood

    Shall the ax boast itself against him that heweth therewith? Shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? As if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself as if it were no wood!

16. 16

    לָכֵןthereforeיְשַׁלַּחshall sendהָאָדוֹןthe Lordיְהוָהthe Lordצְבָאוֹתof Hostsבְּמִשְׁמַנָּיוamong his fat onesרָזוֹןleannessוְתַחַתand underכְּבֹדוֹhis gloryיֵקַדhe shall kindleיְקֹדa burningכִּיקוֹדlike the burning ofאֵשׁ׃a fire

    Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of Hosts, send among his fat ones, leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

17. 17

    וְהָיָהand shall beאוֹר־יִשְׂרָאֵלthe light of Israelלְאֵשׁfor a fireוּקְדוֹשׁוֹand his Holy Oneלְלֶהָבָהfor a flameוּבָעֲרָהand it shall burnוְאׇכְלָהand shall devourשִׁיתוֹhis thornsוּשְׁמִירוֹand his briersבְּיוֹםin a dayאֶחָד׃one

    And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame, and shall burn and shall devour his thorns and his briers in one day;

18. 18

    וּכְבוֹדand the glory ofיַעְרוֹhis forestוְכַרְמִלּוֹand of his fruitful fieldמִנֶּפֶשׁboth soulוְעַד־בָּשָׂרand bodyיְכַלֶּהand shall consumeוְהָיָהand they shall beכִּמְסֹסas when faintsנֹסֵס׃a standard-bearer

    And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body; and they shall be as when a standard-bearer fainteth.

19. 19

    וּשְׁאָרand the rest ofעֵץtrees ofיַעְרוֹhis forestמִסְפָּרfewיִהְיוּthey shall beוְנַעַרthat a childיִכְתְּבֵם׃he may write them

    And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.

20. 20

    וְהָיָהand it shall come to passבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatלֹא־יוֹסִיףshall no moreעוֹדagainשְׁאָרthe remnant ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelוּפְלֵיטַתand such as are escaped ofבֵּית־יַעֲקֹבthe house of Jacobלְהִשָּׁעֵןstayעַל־מַכֵּהוּupon him that smote themוְנִשְׁעַןbut shall stayעַל־יְהוָהupon the Lordקְדוֹשׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵלthe Holy One of Israelבֶּאֱמֶת׃in truth

    And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them, but shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

21. 21

    שְׁאָרthe remnantיָשׁוּבshall returnאַףyeaגַּםevenשְׁאָרthe remnant ofיַעֲקֹבJacobאֶל־אֵלunto Godגִּבּוֹר׃the mighty

    The remnant shall return, yea, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.

22. 22

    כִּיforאִם־יִהְיֶהthough beעַמְּךָyour peopleיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelכְּחוֹלas the sand ofהַיָּםthe seaשְׁאָרa remnantיָשׁוּבshall returnבּוֹof themכִּלָּיוֹןthe consumptionחָרוּץdecreedשׁוֹטֵףshall overflowצְדָקָה׃with righteousness

    For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return; the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

23. 23

    כִּיforכָלָהa consumptionוְנֶחֱרָצָהeven determinedאֲדֹנָיthe LordיְהוִהGodצְבָאוֹתof Hostsעֹשֶׂהshall makeבְּקֶרֶבinכׇּל־הָאָרֶץ׃all the land

    For the Lord God of Hosts shall make a consumption, even determined in all the land.

24. 24

    לָכֵןthereforeכֹּה־אָמַרthus saithאֲדֹנָיthe LordיְהוִהGodצְבָאוֹתof Hostsאַל־תִּירָאbe not afraidעַמִּיO my peopleיֹשֵׁבthat dwellest inצִיּוֹןZionמֵאַשּׁוּרof the Assyrianבַּשֵּׁבֶטwith a rodיַכֶּכָּהhe shall smite youוּמַטֵּהוּand his staffיִשָּׂא־עָלֶיךָhe shall lift up against youבְּדֶרֶךְafter the manner ofמִצְרָיִם׃Egypt

    Therefore, thus saith the Lord God of Hosts: O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian; he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.

25. 25

    כִּי־עוֹדfor yetמְעַטa littleמִזְעָרa very little whileוְכָלָהand shall ceaseזַעַםthe indignationוְאַפִּיand my angerעַל־תַּבְלִיתָם׃in their destruction

    For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease, and mine anger in their destruction.

26. 26

    וְעוֹרֵרand shall stir upעָלָיוagainst himיְהוָהthe Lordצְבָאוֹתof Hostsשׁוֹטa scourgeכְּמַכַּתaccording to the slaughter ofמִדְיָןMidianבְּצוּרat the rock ofעוֹרֵבOrebוּמַטֵּהוּand as his rod wasעַל־הַיָּםover the seaוּנְשָׂאוֹand he shall lift it upבְּדֶרֶךְafter the manner ofמִצְרָיִם׃Egypt

    And the Lord of Hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb; and as his rod was upon the sea so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

27. 27

    וְהָיָהand beבַּיּוֹםin the dayהַהוּאthatיָסוּרshall be taken awayסֻבֳּלוֹhis burdenמֵעַלfrom uponשִׁכְמֶךָyour shoulderוְעֻלּוֹand his yokeמֵעַלfrom uponצַוָּארֶךָyour neckוְחֻבַּלand shall be destroyedעֹלthe yokeמִפְּנֵי־שָׁמֶן׃because of the fatness

    And it shall come to pass in that day that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.

28. 28

    בָּאhe is comeעַל־עַיַּתto Aiathעָבַרhe is passedבְּמִגְרוֹןto Migronלְמִכְמָשׂat Michmashיַפְקִידhe has leftכֵּלָיו׃his baggage

    He is come to Aiath, he is passed to Migron; at Michmash he hath laid up his carriages.

29. 29

    עָבְרוּthey are gone overמַעְבָּרָהthe passageגֶּבַעGebaמָלוֹןtheir lodgingלָנוּthey have taken upחָרְדָהis afraidהָרָמָהRamathגִּבְעַתGibeah ofשָׁאוּלSaulנָסָה׃is fled

    They are gone over the passage; they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramath is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled.

30. 30

    צַהֲלִיlift upקוֹלֵךְyour voiceבַּת־גַּלִּיםO daughter of Gallimהַקְשִׁיבִיcause it to be heardלַיְשָׁהunto LaishעֲנִיָּהO poorעֲנָתוֹת׃Anathoth

    Lift up the voice, O daughter of Gallim; cause it to be heard unto Laish, O poor Anathoth.

31. 31

    נָדְדָהis removedמַדְמֵנָהMadmenahיֹשְׁבֵיthe inhabitants ofהַגֵּבִיםGebimהֵעִיזוּ׃gather themselves to flee

    Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee.

32. 32

    עוֹדthis veryהַיּוֹםdayבְּנֹבat Nobלַעֲמֹדhe will haltיְנֹפֵףhe will shakeיָדוֹhis handהַרagainst the mountain ofבַּת־צִיּוֹןdaughter of Zionגִּבְעַתthe hill ofיְרוּשָׁלִָים׃Jerusalem

    As yet shall he remain at Nob that day; he shall shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33. 33

    הִנֵּהbeholdהָאָדוֹןthe Lordיְהוָהthe Lordצְבָאוֹתof Hostsמְסָעֵףshall lopפֻּארָהthe boughבְּמַעֲרָצָהwith terrorוְרָמֵיand the high ones ofהַקּוֹמָהstatureגְּדוּעִיםshall be hewn downוְהַגְּבֹהִיםand the haughtyיִשְׁפָּלוּ׃shall be humbled

    Behold, the Lord, the Lord of Hosts shall lop the bough with terror; and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down; and the haughty shall be humbled.

34. 34

    וְנִקַּףand he shall cut downסִבְכֵיthe thickets ofהַיַּעַרthe forestsבַּבַּרְזֶלwith ironוְהַלְּבָנוֹןand Lebanonבְּאַדִּירby a mighty oneיִפּוֹל׃shall fall

    And he shall cut down the thickets of the forests with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
