1. 1

   מַשְׂכִּילa maskilלְאָסָףof Asaphהַאֲזִינָהgive earעַמִּיO my peopleתּוֹרָתִיto my lawהַטּוּinclineאׇזְנְכֶםyour earsלְאִמְרֵי־פִי׃to the words of my mouth

   Maschil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

2. 2

   אֶפְתְּחָהI will openבְמָשָׁלin a parableפִּיmy mouthאַבִּיעָהI will utterחִידוֹתdark sayingsמִנִּי־קֶדֶם׃of old

   I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

   אֲשֶׁרwhichשָׁמַעְנוּwe heardוַנֵּדָעֵםand knownוַאֲבוֹתֵינוּand our fathersסִפְּרוּ־לָנוּ׃have told us

   Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

4. 4

   לֹאnotנְכַחֵדwill we hideמִבְּנֵיהֶםfrom their childrenלְדוֹרto the generationאַחֲרוֹןto comeמְסַפְּרִיםtellingתְּהִלּוֹתthe praises ofיְהֹוָהthe LORDוֶעֱזוּזוֹand His strengthוְנִפְלְאֹתָיוand His wondersאֲשֶׁרwhichעָשָׂה׃he did

   We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

   וַיָּקֶםfor He establishedעֵדוּתa testimonyבְּיַעֲקֹבin Jacobוְתוֹרָהand a lawשָׂםHe appointedבְּיִשְׂרָאֵלin IsraelאֲשֶׁרwhichצִוָּהHe commandedאֶת־אֲבוֹתֵינוּour fathersלְהוֹדִיעָםthat they should make them knownלִבְנֵיהֶם׃to their children

   For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

   לְמַעַןin order thatיֵדְעוּmight knowדּוֹרthe generationאַחֲרוֹןto comeבָּנִיםthe childrenיִוָּלֵדוּwho should be bornיָקֻמוּwho should ariseוִיסַפְּרוּand declare themלִבְנֵיהֶם׃to their children

   That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

   וְיָשִׂימוּthat they might setבֵאלֹהִיםin Godכִּסְלָםtheir hopeוְלֹאand notיִשְׁכְּחוּforgetמַעַלְלֵי־אֵלthe deeds of Godוּמִצְוֺתָיוand His commandmentsיִנְצֹרוּ׃but keep

   That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

8. 8

   וְלֹאand notיִהְיוּshall beכַּאֲבוֹתָםlike their fathersדּוֹרa generationסוֹרֵרstubbornוּמֹרֶהand rebelliousדּוֹרa generationלֹא־הֵכִיןthat set not arightלִבּוֹits heartוְלֹא־נֶאֶמְנָהand whose was not steadfastאֶת־אֵלwith Godרוּחוֹ׃spirit

   And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

   בְּנֵי־אֶפְרַיִםsons of Ephraimנוֹשְׁקֵיbeing armedרוֹמֵי־קָשֶׁתand carrying bowsהָפְכוּturned backבְּיוֹםin the day ofקְרָב׃battle

   The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.

    לֹאnotשָׁמְרוּdid they keepבְּרִיתthe covenant ofאֱלֹהִיםGodוּבְתוֹרָתוֹand in His lawמֵאֲנוּthey refusedלָלֶכֶת׃to walk

    They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

11. 11

    וַיִּשְׁכְּחוּand they forgotעֲלִילוֹתָיוHis deedsוְנִפְלְאוֹתָיוand His miraclesאֲשֶׁרwhichהֶרְאָם׃He had shown them

    And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.

12. 12

    נֶגֶדin the sight ofאֲבוֹתָםtheir fathersעָשָׂהHe didפֶלֶאa marvelous thingבְּאֶרֶץin the land ofמִצְרַיִםEgyptשְׂדֵה־צֹעַן׃the field of Zoan

    Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

13. 13

    בָּקַעHe dividedיָםthe seaוַיַּעֲבִירֵםand caused them to pass throughוַיַּצֶּב־מַיִםand He made the waters standכְּמוֹ־נֵד׃like a heap

    He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.

14. 14

    וַיַּנְחֵםand He led themבֶּעָנָןwith a cloudיוֹמָםby dayוְכׇל־הַלַּיְלָהand all the nightבְּאוֹרin the light ofאֵשׁ׃fire

    In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

15. 15

    יְבַקַּעHe cleavedצֻרִיםthe rocksבַּמִּדְבָּרin the wildernessוַיַּשְׁקְand gave them drinkכִּתְהֹמוֹתas from the depthsרַבָּה׃abundantly

    He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.

16. 16

    וַיּוֹצִאand He brought forthנוֹזְלִיםstreamsמִסָּלַעout of the rockוַיּוֹרֶדand caused to run downכַּנְּהָרוֹתlike the riversמָיִם׃water

    He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

17. 17

    וַיּוֹסִיפוּand they went onעוֹדstillלַחֲטֹא־לוֹto sin against Himלַמְרוֹתrebelling againstעֶלְיוֹןthe Most Highבַּצִּיָּה׃in the desert

    And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.

18. 18

    וַיְנַסּוּ־אֵלand they tested Godבִּלְבָבָםin their heartלִשְׁאׇל־אֹכֶלby asking foodלְנַפְשָׁם׃for their craving

    And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

19. 19

    וַיְדַבְּרוּand they spokeבֵּאלֹהִיםagainst Godאָמְרוּthey saidהֲיוּכַלcanאֵלGodלַעֲרֹךְspreadשֻׁלְחָןa tableבַּמִּדְבָּר׃in the wilderness

    Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

20. 20

    הֵןbeholdהִכָּה־צוּרHe smote the rockוַיָּזוּבוּand the waters gushed outמַיִםwaterוּנְחָלִיםand the streamsיִשְׁטֹפוּoverflowedהֲגַם־לֶחֶםcan bread alsoיוּכַלHe be ableתֵּתto giveאִם־יָכִיןcan He provideשְׁאֵרfleshלְעַמּוֹ׃to His people

    Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

21. 21

    לָכֵןthereforeשָׁמַעheard thisיְהֹוָהthe LORDוַיִּתְעַבָּרand was wrothוְאֵשׁand fireנִשְּׂקָהwas kindledבְיַעֲקֹבin Jacobוְגַם־אַףand anger alsoעָלָהcame upבְיִשְׂרָאֵל׃in Israel

    Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;

22. 22

    כִּיbecauseלֹאnotהֶאֱמִינוּdid they believeבֵּאלֹהִיםin Godוְלֹאand notבָטְחוּdid they trustבִּישׁוּעָתוֹ׃in His salvation

    Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

23. 23

    וַיְצַוthough He had commandedשְׁחָקִיםthe skiesמִמָּעַלfrom aboveוְדַלְתֵיand the doors ofשָׁמַיִםthe heavensפָּתָח׃He opened

    Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,

24. 24

    וַיַּמְטֵרand He rained downעֲלֵיהֶםupon themמָןmannaלֶאֱכֹלto eatוּדְגַן־שָׁמַיִםand the grain of the heavensנָתַןHe gaveלָמוֹ׃for them

    And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

25. 25

    לֶחֶםthe bread ofאַבִּירִיםthe mightyאָכַלdid eatאִישׁmanצֵידָהfoodשָׁלַחHe sentלָהֶםto themלָשֹׂבַע׃to the full

    Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.

26. 26

    יַסַּעHe caused to blowקָדִיםan east windבַּשָּׁמָיִםin the heavensוַיְנַהֵגand He brought inבְּעֻזּוֹby His powerתֵימָן׃the south wind

    He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.

27. 27

    וַיַּמְטֵרand He rained downעֲלֵיהֶםupon themכֶּעָפָרlike dustשְׁאֵרfleshוּכְחוֹלand like the sand ofיַמִּיםthe seasעוֹףfeathered fowlכָּנָף׃winged

    He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:

28. 28

    וַיַּפֵּלand He let it fallבְּקֶרֶבin the midst ofמַחֲנֵהוּtheir campסָבִיבall aroundלְמִשְׁכְּנֹתָיו׃their dwellings

    And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

29. 29

    וַיֹּאכְלוּand they ateוַיִּשְׂבְּעוּand they were satisfiedמְאֹדexceedinglyוְתַאֲוָתָםand their own desireיָבִאHe gaveלָהֶם׃to them

    So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;

30. 30

    לֹא־זָרוּthey were not estrangedמִתַּאֲוָתָםfrom their cravingעוֹדany moreאׇכְלָםtheir food wasבְּפִיהֶם׃still in their mouths

    They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,

31. 31

    וְאַףand the anger ofאֱלֹהִיםGodעָלָהcame upבָהֶםagainst themוַיַּהֲרֹגand slewבְּמִשְׁמַנֵּיהֶםthe fattest of themוּבַחוּרֵיand the chosen men ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהִכְרִיעַ׃He struck down

    The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.

32. 32

    בְּכׇל־זֹאתfor all thisחָטְאוּ־עוֹדthey sinned stillוְלֹא־הֶאֱמִינוּand believed notבְּנִפְלְאוֹתָיו׃in His wondrous works

    For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.

33. 33

    וַיְכַל־בַּהֶבֶלtherefore He consumed in vanityיְמֵיהֶםtheir daysוּשְׁנוֹתָםand their yearsבַּבֶּהָלָה׃in terror

    Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.

34. 34

    אִם־הֲרָגָםwhen He slew themוּדְרָשׁוּהוּthen they sought Himוְשָׁבוּand they returnedוְשִׁחֲרוּ־אֵל׃and sought God earnestly

    When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.

35. 35

    וַיִּזְכְּרוּand they rememberedכִּי־אֱלֹהִיםbecause Godצוּרָםtheir rockוְאֵלand the GodעֶלְיוֹןMost Highגֹּאֲלָם׃their Redeemer

    And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

36. 36

    וַיְפַתּוּהוּnevertheless they flattered Himבְּפִיהֶםwith their mouthוּבִלְשׁוֹנָםand with their tongueיְכַזְּבוּ־לוֹ׃they lied to Him

    Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

37. 37

    וְלִבָּםfor their heartלֹא־נָכוֹןwas not steadfastעִמּוֹwith Himוְלֹאand notנֶאֶמְנוּwere they faithfulבִּבְרִיתוֹ׃in His covenant

    For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.

38. 38

    וְהוּאbut Heרַחוּםbeing full of compassionיְכַפֵּרforgaveעָוֺןiniquityוְלֹא־יַשְׁחִיתand destroyed them notוְהִרְבָּהyea many a timeלְהָשִׁיבHe turned awayאַפּוֹHis angerוְלֹא־יָעִירand did not stir upכׇּל־חֲמָתוֹ׃all His fury

    But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

39. 39

    וַיִּזְכֹּרfor He rememberedכִּי־בָשָׂרthat fleshהֵמָּהthey wereרוּחַa windהוֹלֵךְthat passes awayוְלֹאand notיָשׁוּב׃comes again

    For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.

40. 40

    כַּמָּהhow oftenיַמְרוּהוּthey provoked Himבַמִּדְבָּרin the wildernessיַעֲצִיבוּהוּand grieved Himבִּישִׁימוֹן׃in the desert

    How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!

41. 41

    וַיָּשׁוּבוּand againוַיְנַסּוּthey testedאֵלGodוּקְדוֹשׁand the Holy One ofיִשְׂרָאֵלIsraelהִתְווּ׃they provoked

    Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.

42. 42

    לֹא־זָכְרוּnot they rememberedאֶת־יָדוֹHis handיוֹםthe dayאֲשֶׁר־פָּדָםwhen He redeemed themמִנִּי־צָר׃from the adversary

    They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.

43. 43

    אֲשֶׁר־שָׂםhow He had wroughtבְּמִצְרַיִםin EgyptאֹתוֹתָיוHis signsוּמוֹפְתָיוand His wondersבִּשְׂדֵה־צֹעַן׃in the field of Zoan

    How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan:

44. 44

    וַיַּהֲפֹךְand He turnedלְדָםinto bloodיְאֹרֵיהֶםtheir riversוְנֹזְלֵיהֶםand their streamsבַּל־יִשְׁתָּיוּן׃that they could not drink

    And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.

45. 45

    יְשַׁלַּחHe sentבָּהֶםin themעָרֹבswarms of fliesוַיֹּאכְלֵםwhich devoured themוּצְפַרְדֵּעַand frogsוַתַּשְׁחִיתֵם׃which destroyed them

    He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.

46. 46

    וַיִּתֵּןHe gave alsoלֶחָסִילto the caterpillarיְבוּלָםtheir increaseוִיגִיעָםand their laborלָאַרְבֶּה׃to the locust

    He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.

47. 47

    יַהֲרֹגHe destroyedבַּבָּרָדwith hailגַּפְנָםtheir vinesוְשִׁקְמוֹתָםand their sycamoresבַּחֲנָמַל׃with frost

    He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.

48. 48

    וַיַּסְגֵּרHe gave overלַבָּרָדto the hailבְּעִירָםtheir cattleוּמִקְנֵיהֶםand their flocksלָרְשָׁפִים׃to thunderbolts

    He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.

49. 49

    יְשַׁלַּח־בָּםHe cast upon themחֲרוֹןthe fierceness ofאַפּוֹHis angerעֶבְרָהwrathוָזַעַםand indignationוְצָרָהand troubleמִשְׁלַחַתa mission ofמַלְאֲכֵיangels ofרָעִים׃evil

    He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.

50. 50

    יְפַלֵּסHe leveledנָתִיבa pathלְאַפּוֹfor His angerלֹא־חָשַׂךְHe spared notמִמָּוֶתfrom deathנַפְשָׁםtheir soulוְחַיָּתָםand their lifeלַדֶּבֶרto the pestilenceהִסְגִּיר׃but gave over

    He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;

51. 51

    וַיַּךְand He smoteכׇּל־בְּכוֹרall the firstborn ofבְּמִצְרָיִםin Egyptרֵאשִׁיתthe first ofאוֹנִיםtheir strengthבְּאׇהֳלֵי־חָם׃in the tents of Ham

    And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:

52. 52

    וַיַּסַּעbut He made to go forthכַּצֹּאןlike the sheepעַמּוֹhis peopleוַיְנַהֲגֵםand guided themכַּעֵדֶרlike a flockבַּמִּדְבָּר׃in the wilderness

    But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

53. 53

    וַיַּנְחֵםand He led them onלָבֶטַחin safetyוְלֹאand notפָחָדוּdid they fearוְאֶת־אוֹיְבֵיהֶםand their enemiesכִּסָּהcoveredהַיָּם׃the sea

    And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

54. 54

    וַיְבִיאֵםand he brought themאֶל־גְּבוּלto the border ofקׇדְשׁוֹHis holinessהַר־זֶהthis mountainקָנְתָהhad wonיְמִינוֹ׃His right hand

    And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

55. 55

    וַיְגָרֶשׁand He drove outמִפְּנֵיהֶםfrom before themגּוֹיִםthe nationsוַיַּפִּילֵםand allotted themבְּחֶבֶלby a measuring line forנַחֲלָהan inheritanceוַיַּשְׁכֵּןand made to dwellבְּאׇהֳלֵיהֶםin their tentsשִׁבְטֵיthe tribes ofיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

56. 56

    וַיְנַסּוּyet they testedוַיַּמְרוּand provokedאֶת־אֱלֹהִיםGodעֶלְיוֹןthe Most Highוְעֵדוֹתָיוand His testimoniesלֹאnotשָׁמָרוּ׃did they keep

    Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:

57. 57

    וַיִּסֹּגוּbut turned backוַיִּבְגְּדוּand dealt unfaithfullyכַּאֲבוֹתָםlike their fathersנֶהְפְּכוּthey were turned asideכְּקֶשֶׁתlike a bowרְמִיָּה׃deceitful

    But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

58. 58

    וַיַּכְעִיסוּהוּfor they provoked Him to angerבְּבָמוֹתָםwith their high placesוּבִפְסִילֵיהֶםand with their carved imagesיַקְנִיאוּהוּ׃they moved Him to jealousy

    For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

59. 59

    שָׁמַעheard thisאֱלֹהִיםGodוַיִּתְעַבָּרand was wrothוַיִּמְאַסand greatly abhorredמְאֹדgreatlyבְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃Israel

    When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:

60. 60

    וַיִּטֹּשׁso that He forsookמִשְׁכַּןthe tabernacle ofשִׁלוֹShilohאֹהֶלthe tentשִׁכֵּןwhich He had placedבָּאָדָם׃among men

    So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;

61. 61

    וַיִּתֵּןand deliveredלַשְּׁבִיinto the captivityעֻזּוֹHis strengthוְתִפְאַרְתּוֹand His gloryבְיַד־צָר׃into the enemy's hand

    And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand.

62. 62

    וַיַּסְגֵּרHe gave over alsoלַחֶרֶבto the swordעַמּוֹHis peopleוּבְנַחֲלָתוֹand with His inheritanceהִתְעַבָּר׃He was wroth

    He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.

63. 63

    בַּחוּרָיוHis young menאָכְלָה־אֵשׁfire consumedוּבְתוּלֹתָיוand His maidensלֹאnotהוּלָּלוּ׃were given in marriage

    The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.

64. 64

    כֹּהֲנָיוHis priestsבַּחֶרֶבwith the swordנָפָלוּfellוְאַלְמְנֹתָיוand His widowsלֹאnotתִבְכֶּינָה׃did they weep

    Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.

65. 65

    וַיִּקַץthen awokeכְּיָשֵׁןas one out of sleepאֲדֹנָיthe Lordכְּגִבּוֹרlike a mighty manמִתְרוֹנֵןwho shoutsמִיָּיִן׃by reason of wine

    Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.

66. 66

    וַיַּךְ־צָרָיוand He smote His enemiesאָחוֹרbackחֶרְפַּתa reproach ofעוֹלָםperpetualנָתַןHe putלָמוֹ׃upon them

    And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.

67. 67

    וַיִּמְאַסmoreover He refusedבְּאֹהֶלthe tent ofיוֹסֵףJosephוּבְשֵׁבֶטand the tribe ofאֶפְרַיִםEphraimלֹאnotבָחָר׃did He choose

    Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:

68. 68

    וַיִּבְחַרbut He choseאֶת־שֵׁבֶטthe tribe ofיְהוּדָהJudahאֶת־הַרmountצִיּוֹןZionאֲשֶׁרwhichאָהֵב׃He loved

    But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.

69. 69

    וַיִּבֶןand He builtכְּמוֹ־רָמִיםlike the heightsמִקְדָּשׁוֹHis sanctuaryכְּאֶרֶץlike the earthיְסָדָהּwhich He has foundedלְעוֹלָם׃forever

    And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.

70. 70

    וַיִּבְחַרHe chose alsoבְּדָוִדon DavidעַבְדּוֹHis servantוַיִּקָּחֵהוּand took himמִמִּכְלְאֹתfrom the folds ofצֹאן׃the sheep

    He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:

71. 71

    מֵאַחַרfrom followingעָלוֹתthe ewes with youngהֱבִיאוֹHe brought himלִרְעוֹתto feedבְּיַעֲקֹבJacobעַמּוֹHis peopleוּבְיִשְׂרָאֵלand Israelנַחֲלָתוֹ׃His inheritance

    From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.

72. 72

    וַיִּרְעֵםso he fed themכְּתֹםaccording to the integrity ofלְבָבוֹhis heartוּבִתְבוּנוֹתand by the skillfulness ofכַּפָּיוhis own handsיַנְחֵם׃he guided them

    So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
